For the week ending 5/12/07:
Ms. Goodling, now 33, arrived at the department at the start of the Bush administration after working as an opposition researcher for the Republican National Committee during the 2000 presidential campaign.
Her legal experience was limited; she had graduated in 1999 from Regent University School of Law, which was founded by Pat Robertson. Deeply religious and politically conservative, Ms. Goodling seemed to believe that part of her job was to bring people with similar values into the Justice Department, several former colleagues said.
She joined the department in the press office. Soon after, two lawyers said, Ms. Goodling complained that staff members in Puerto Rico had used rap music in a public service announcement intended to discourage gun crime.
“That is just outrageous,” she told one department lawyer. “How could they use government money for an ad that featured rap music? That kind of music glorifies violence.”
– The New York Times, 5/11/07
Dear Mommy and Daddy,
Well, I've finally settled into my apartment in Georgetown! There are so many powerful people living right on my street, it's amazing! I can see why Mrs. S___ at the Regent placement office suggested I move here. More later!
Dear Mommy,
Don't tell Daddy, but my roommate has a new boyfriend, and they have SEX in the apartment WHILE I'M HOME!! They're NOT married! I've told her how much I disapprove of her whorish lifestyle, and she called me a name I can't repeat to you. I don't know if I can live in the same house with someone with no regard for the sanctity of marriage and the rule of God.
P.S. Right now, I'm helping John Ashcroft with his testimony for his appointment as Attorney General! Mr. Ashcroft is such a righteous man. AND he hates naked statues, just like Daddy! I volunteered to cover them whenever he has to make speeches in the lobby.
Dear Mommy and Daddy,
My boss, John Ashcroft, is changing how we hire lawyers at the Department of Justice! I've been tasked as the person people contact for the hiring of judges!!! Finally, I can give back to Regent University!
P.S. Thanks for the real Ralph Lauren t-shirt you got when you visited New York's Canal Street with your tour group. I'm going to wear it to the next Regent alumni picnic!
Dear Daddy and Mommy,
Being a prosecutor is a lot of work. I'm feeling really stressed out. Nobody here wants to participate in my prayer circles and they keep nagging at me about separation of church and state. I mean, as if! My constitutional law professor told us that church/state separation is an antiquated notion meant to deprive good Christians of their rights to practice their religion.
Dear Mommy and Daddy,
Alberto Gonzales, you know, THE Attorney General himself, has told me that I'm going to review who we hire in the U.S. Attorneys Office! Can you believe it?? I get to interview potential hires for USA positions. That horrid little heathen of a woman down in Human Resources gave me a pamphlet on appropriate questions, but I threw it out as soon as I got back to my office. God tells me what to ask the candidates, not some silly book written by the EEOC. I have already rejected several candidates because they're [sic] resumes showed that they went to Northeastern law schools or worked for New York City law firms. We know what THAT means. No Democrats here, thank you very much!!
Dear Mommy and Daddy,
I don't want to go to jail! Will they play rap music there?
P.S. What does "limited immunity" mean?

Hi Watertiger!
double-you-tee !!
lolo AND TSF in the first nanoseconds!
Life is good.
Looking forward to her testimony. Does she have a date yet?
Yikes!! Check out this out!
‘Quiverfull authors Hess and Hess, along with Joyce, also connect the proliferation of conservative politics as a motivation behind Quiverfull. Hess and Hess state,
When at the height of the Reagan Revolution the conservative faction in Washington was enforced with squads of new conservative congressmen, legislators often found themselves handcuffed by lack of like-minded staff. There simply weren’t enough conservatives trained to serve in Washington in the lower and middle capacities.[2]
Hess and Hess continue by envisioning that the offspring of Quiverfull families might enter national and local politics to bring conservative majorities, publicly-funded education to bring the teaching of creationism, and business to adjure companies to adhere to what adherents see as Christian sensibilities.[2][6]” Wikipedia.
LS,
if you are about for this thread
some vintage watertiger for you
oooh and day appropriate !
Why do you make her sound like a stupid little girl? Just cause she doesn’t like rap?
Hi Watertiger!
Thanks for the Monica files…hee-hee.
Last night Monica was on my mind (blergh)….
kirk murphy @ 167
OK, off to find the brain bleach.
Question for the room: Of course, we read many times about Monica Goodling having been graduated from Regent University Law School, but does anyone know if she took or passed the bar exam? And if so, what state is she licensed to practice in, and has she been admitted to the federal bar?
Looking forward to her testimony. Does she have a date yet?
I understand she is hoping Ted Olsen will ask her to her testimony.
genoasail @ 10
Actually, I believe there were many calls to the Virginia Bar and the polite lady there confirmed she was an attorney in good standing with the Virginia Bar.
emptywheel is worrying that monica may pull an andrew north on us:
http://thenexthurrah.typepad.c…..y_abo.html
Snow @ 11
Spew alert!
genoasail @ 10
The only information I know of is that she is/was admitted to the bar in Virginia.
No word on whether disbarment was part of the immunity package. I recommend she go back to working the front desk at the Holiday Inn.
cbl @ 7
That would be the family I just watched on TLC..The Duggars.
Ah….the Duggars.
Don’t get either me or attaturk started on the Duggars.
I wonder if Michelle Duggar gets spanked if she doesn’t get all the housecleaning done.
watertiger @ 17
I would hope so. She has like 100 children to assist.
Thank you, Mr. Wolcott — I do not want a(nother) subscription.
(How does Vanity Fair’s popup defeat my Jobsian computer cleverness?)
watertiger @ 17
First I’ve heard of them…all sugar and candy and a LOT of money. What is their RNC “role” other than what I referred to above about the Quiverfull thing.
watertiger @ 17
I know where she can get the drawers for that ;)
Alfred Kelgarries @ 13
It’s going to be the God led me to do everything I’ve done, and if you want to arrest God, go ahead and try.
LS @ 20
there was a weird spate of all things Duggar last year — attaturk and I livebloggged that TLC show about them building their dream house. I was singularly struck by the younger children who said that what they wanted most in their new home was someplace to hide.
You should check out the “healthy” recipes at their website.
watertiger @ 17
WHo are they?
Water Tiger!!! Happy Mother’s Day to all the Moms here at the Lake!!! Marcy raised some serious concerns about Monica’s immunity deal at TNH!!! Interesting reading!!! I wonder if WaPoo will continue with the comment section to the Oped section, some blistering retorts to their drivel!!!
Wow. TIME is still around? I thought they stopped publication and existed solely in the imagination of those within the Beltway.
SnarKassandra @ 24
You can google “Duggar family” and you’ll see a lot about them.
SnarKassandra @ 8
Not because of that. She’s a stupid little girl because she had no clue about our government and our Constitution. She was supposed to be a lawyer and didn’t know she was violating the Hatch Act.
Her stupidity/willful ignorance now has become spotlighted. She has to go out and hire a REAL lawyer too keep her holy ass out of jail.
She was naive and innocent (?) enough to believe that “loyal bushies” had the best interest of the country in mind.
I personally think she’s a duplicitous self-righteous little weasel who was caught swimming in political waters too deep for her.
but that’s just me…. : )
kirk murphy @ 8
Kirk Emptywheel has a good post on Monica from yesterday. You should leave her these questions in that thread. I bet she can fill in all the blanks. She checks her old threads for comments. Leave it and check back. You will not be disappointed. *g*
lolo
SnarKassandra @ 24
They’re a family who subscribes to the “Quiverfull” Christian theory of child-bearing, otherwise known as “brood mares” to you and me. Children are “the Lord’s Heritage” and you’re supposed to have as many as you possibly can to make God happy. Never mind if you can’t afford it or kill yourself trying…
Sample question for Monica’s hiring questionaire:
Why would you think that? Is that domestic violence? They look like they are rich enough to have someone help her with the housework, or else the kids when they are not doing home-schooling.
SnarKassandra @ 8
Because she has proven herself to be completely ignorant of what role religion and partiality are supposed to play at the Department of Justice (hint: NONE.). Because she, along with her little Regent automatons, have helped destroy the stature of the institution that is the Department of Justice. Because asking a job candidate whether he cheated on his wife is not only in bad taste, but IS AGAINST THE LAW. Because she IS a stupid little girl who was in WAY over her head. Because I have no fucking patience for the degree of incompetence that is routinely condoned by the higher ups in this Administration.
SnarKassandra @ 32
Sorry, that’s a cross-reference to one of my posts at Dependable Renegade.
Question #2:
Thank you Watertiger!
I wonder if he’ll mention how he supported McKay’s efforts to find who murdered the previous USA in Seattle…TX/MO AUSU’s, etc.
Last week’s “Panic In Detriot” included reassuring Arab-Americans their civil right/liberties were the same of the rest of America. That is – nonexistent.

Question #3:

Oh, can’t I get an “all of the above”?

That would never be on Monica’s questionaire, sadly.

You’re not using IE???
SteveAudio @ 40
I don’t know that any of those hires would be able to tell you where The Hague is.
Watertiger,
Love the post. I love paperdolls. My paperdolls had beautiful outfits that I would spend hours creating.
Yes, Miss Monica’s hearing will be the talk of the town. Are they really going to show it on Cspan? They want to tie up all the loose ends next week so she can testify before the holiday weekend. Here is the linky to EW’s latest post on Monica.Linky

3. Bow down and worship even unto President Bush

Didn’t he also say that he’d go back to that Baghdad market sans heavy armed guard? I’d like to see that.
Question #4:
watertiger @ 42
In Daddy’s likker cabinet
;>)
SteveAudio @ 50
well, it isn’t justice.
I’m guessing the profusely breeding Duggar clan is not home to the Ronnie Duggar who founded Alliance For Democracy, published the Texas Observer…
and in 2004 wrote The Texafication of the USA
BTW, totally off topic, Steve Gilliard has taken a bad turn.
I blogged about it at my place, but for the real lowdown, see Jen’s latest post at The News Blog.

4., 3., and 2., in that order of priority.
Monica Goodling is a 34 year old kid who did not belong at the top of the DOJ. How she got there is the real story.
Hey folks. I would share some snark, except that the Bush regime is attempting to go beyond parody in their perfidious performances.
Hey! Where’s the Princess Leia *slave of Jabba the Hutt* outfit?
Anyone else have any Goodling job interview questions?
Anyone, anyone…?
Sandman @ 62
Why do y’all think 33 and 34 is a kid?
ifthethunderdontgetya @ 64
That wouldn’t be very modest.
ifthethunderdontgetya @ 64
Monica doesn’t dress like a slut.
SnarKassandra @ 66
Every guitar I own, except one, is older than that.
At my age, she’s definitely a kid.
SteveAudio @ 65
Do you call your mother “mommy” or “mom”?
Alfred Kelgarries @ 13
Uh, that would be Oliver North.
I doubt if Monica has the full capacity to develop all this cr*p on her own. Would I like to see her spend time in prison if she’s done what has been rumored? Ab-so-f*ckin’-lutely. But I’d rather see KKKarl and Harriet and Abu as ringleaders be rough’d and cuff’d and taken off to jail.
The big difference in these non-lawyerly eyes is that Ollie North was a major planner/player/driver in Iran/Contra while Monica may be a semi-major player, she ain’t the driver and planner.
My $.02
SteveAudio @ 69
I don’t even want to know what that makes me.
SnarKassandra @ 66
To paraphrase Sheldon Whitehouse during Kyle Sampson’s testimony, why the hell were two people four years out of law school with little to no trial experience determining who lived and who died at DOJ?
SnarKassandra @ 72
At a minimum, you’re already better educated and a more competent attorney than Monica Goodling.
you just can’t make stuff like this up:

dakine01 @ 71
sigh. first spenser knebel, then andrew north. (in my defense, one of my favorite sf authors used the andrew north penname…) i think i need to borrow some of St Mc’s anti-aging medicine…
SnarKassandra @ 66
Because when you are in your fifties, 33 or 34 is a kid. But it is also a reflection of how she has operated, in total disregard of the law and precedents in our repuublic.
Believe me, SnarKassandra, you have evidenced far more maturity and understanding of people and the world than have individuals such as Monica Goodling and Kyle Sampson. And Abu Gonzo and The Chimpenfuhrer as far as that goes.
Why Gonzales would want anyone to believe that there was no oversight of these people is beyond me.
You aren’t overseeing these little martinets, then you’re spectacularly, criminally incompetent. You ARE overseeing these little martinets, then you’re guilty of Hatch Act violations.
Lesser of two evils for Abu.
Sandman @ 62
the article from the NYT, maybe it’s just me, but I flashed back to when the NYT completely destroyed the woman who accused William Kennedy Smith with rape by trashing her, even printing her name, before the trial took place. A nice gift to the Kennedys.
this seems the same kind of thing, make it ALL Goodling’s fault, and maybe spare the others.
I guess I just can’t take the Times at face value amymore.
Nice job, wt.
I had missed Pickles as human-punctuation-mark. That was great.
I can’t believe Pickles’ handlers dress her up like that. Maybe they are all in on an inside joke.
33 or 34 is a kid when it comes to lawyers. Let’s remember she was just 31 when she got this gig.
Having a 31 year old fresh out of bible school and regent university deciding the fate of career employees at Justice is putting it in the hands “of a kid”.

AB FAB marathon is on BBC.
Because when you are in your fifties, 33 or 34 is a kid. But it is also a reflection of how she has operated, in total disregard of the law and precedents in our repuublic.
It’s more than that. I can see if the person is in his/her early 30’s and has shown a prodigy-like skill in navigating the waters of D.C. But a position of power like that which was bestowed upon Monica Goodling is ordinarily given to someone with a significant amount of professional experience in the field.
She had next to none.
It’s like making a summer intern Partner.

Coincidentally, the same qualifications needed for Mr. Kate O’Beirne’s Iraqi Reconstruction Boondoggle.
Weren’t they also chosen from Regent?
SnarKassandra @ 66
That’s a maturity thing. The woman’s Pollyannaish view of the world qualifies her as a ‘kid’ regardless of her chronological age.
watertiger @ 79
being criminally incompetent is not a felony. Lying under oath to congress is a felony. Abu knows perfectly well what he is doing; the “dumb hispanic” act is just that, an act. What is terrifying about his performance is that it is almost letter perfect duplication of the testimony of various mobsters before the kefauver commission.
Thanks lolo!
Done.
ifthethunderdontgetya @ 87
Of course it’s a coincidence.

Well, and, for lack of a better word, wisdom.
You can be smart (although doesn’t sound like Miss Monica is) and not wise if you haven’t had the life experience that tells you that sometimes things don’t work out they way they should in theory, or that allows you to put more weight on, say, making sure people aren’t starving than on proecting the purity of the free market.
Part of GWB’s problem is that as many times as he’s failed, he’s never had to pay the price. Young folks like Cassie, who have had to deal with difficulties light years beyond what Bush, or Goodling, or Samuel Alito have ever dealt with are posessed of a more nuanced and open attitude towards most anything.
If that makes any sense. Words aren’t my friend today.

Say, did any of you catch Bill Moyer’s report on Regent University? Pretty scary. One young grad kept going on about how man’s law should be consistent with God’s law and morality, etc. Are we going to start throwing people in jail for cheating on their spouses? I’d like to see them take that on!!!
I’m a spiritual person, but my BS detector goes up Big Time when people argue in God’s name. “Can’t argue with God!” It is reassuring to hear from real live people like Zbigniew can’t spell his last name, who hold that doing immoral things in the name of higher morality is a very dangerous position.
Bottom line though (been said before, I know): Monica is simply the lightening rod to keep the heat off her bosses. That’s all. The stooge. They don’t want to burn someone truly valued. She’s just a footsoldier.

That’s because Richard Perle apparently has a self-esteem problem. No doubt, he feels under-appreciated for the vastness of his own ‘book learning.’
What a f*cking idiot! Practical experience trumps ‘book experience. Sometimes you get baptized in fire but most professions, actual professions, like practical experience. I went to college with someone who surpassed most of us in book learning, but could not do the actual lab work in our clinicals. I must say, it was quite the humbling experience for him.

I don`t think it is that we think of someone 33 & 34 as a “kid” but that someone that age that still has their mind back in junior high (middle) school is a “kid”. IMO there are plenty of people that are 60-70 that are “kids” (note southeastern United States). It is what is in the mind & what the behavior is, not the chronological number.
Most of us expect that once people pass the age of majority their behavior/perceptions of the way things work in the real world will “grow up” accordingly.
Monica is, we think, someone that has not been able to let go of junior high (middle) school mindset.
You have little idea how “adult” you are for your age.
Seriously.

It would be amusing if Rove told Lieberman that (wink, wink) he would never be prosecuted for his slush fund activities.

Appalling.
These GOP girly men are so math-phobic for a reason. In addition to “sweeps” let’s scoop up dozens and dozens of civilians and torture them. Even if only one is really connected in any way to a bad person, it’s worth it! Jackpot! We saved lives!!
Let’s treat everyone like a criminal! It’s becoming so fashionable.

How Monica Goodling found her lawyer John Dowd, whose secretary/assistant is “suspended” from the firm due to her having been a contractor and assistant to the DCMadam, is another mystery.

Blank Kludge – was the “Panic in Detroit” reference above taken from an old Bowie song? If so, way cool. Back around the Ziggy Stardust era, the live performance of “Panic In Detroit” was absolutely incredible. I will hazard a guess Steve Audio might be up on this.

Going good MP. how are you?
BTW, with all the attention paid to Monica’s attending Regent University Law School, nobody’s mentioned where she did her undergrad work. Now it may be a very fine school for all I know, but a name like Messiah College suggests things about their opinion on a whoooole lot of subjects.
The French president rides horses, our doesn’t. Go figure. Bush doesn’t ride horses. He’s afraid of them, or they of him, or something. Did the MSM ever pick up on the Texas Ranch without horses thing. Of course not. I expect they will soon, Mocking Bush is becoming popular at an astounding rate.
I predict that the ‘ranch’ will be abandoned by him right after he leaves office and then sold off after some decent interval.
“Why do y’all think 33 and 34 is a kid?”
Lawyers usually go to college for four years, and to law school for three years. Therefore, most who go straight through are at least 25 years old when they take the bar exam.
In Virginia, recent law graduates take the bar exam in July, and learn whether or not they passed in November. Monica went to law school for four years, for reasons that are unknown. Monica spent a year at American, and then another three years at Regent. She was 26 when she passed the Virginia bar exam in November 1999. (Unlike the MAJORITY of her classmates at Regent, Monica apparently passed the Va. State bar exam on the first try.) So she had AT MOST most four or five years experience, and NO trial or prosecutorial experience, when she was hired by the Justice Department at the ripe old age of 31 to oversee all hiring and firing in DOJ, bypassing regular personnel practices and repeatedly violating the Hatch Act. Four or five years is a real newby in the practice of law, particularly for someone who has no relevant prosecutorial experience. Such a person is utterly unfit to judge the far more experienced and qualified individuals who hold important positions in the DOJ and U.S. Attorney’s Offices.
Some more Monica interview questions (true/false):
The United States is a Christian Nation.
The Founding Fathers were all devout Christians.
Separation of church and state are not in the U.S. Constitution.
Evolution has been disproven; creation is a fact.
God ordained the United States with a special purpose, and guides it daily.
War is not frowned upon in the Bible; the death penalty is not frowned upon in the Bible; abortion and homosexuality are prohibited in the Bible.
You may agree or disagree with these statements, but I have heard them all at one time or another from Regent students or graduates.
You should check out the religious pledge that Regent students take, and figure out for yourself if that is an appropriate pre-condition to hold public office.
TeddySanFran @ 171
