This is a bit of a drive-by, but your bewailing the lack of good chinese food in Iowa City made me realize that you share a hometown with one of my favorite people – a woman who is in the Iowa Writer’s program.

Not that you’d know her.

But my point – and I do have one, is that NPR had a piece on a Chinese Restaurant employment agency. Seriously. It’s in New York’s Chinatown, and folks get shipped all over the country.

There’s a second part of the story, here, that talks about how little they all get paid.

Yes, but you were there when she really desperately needed someone the most. The addicted cause so much pain to so many around them (though not nearly as much as they do to themselves). It takes years to recover from the chaos, or at least it did for me. Fortunately, my son was too young to know much of what was going on. Her leaving, however, left permanent marks and when she tried to re-establish cintact 15 years later, he would not speak to her and has not since.

I know some people who gave up on baseball after ‘94 too. Damn shame, that strike – one of the dumbest things MLB has ever done. Here in DC though we finally have baseball back in town for the past three years (after a 34 year absence), so even though the Nats have a pitiful record, they’re still OUR Nats :-)

The Sens/Sabres game was good from the opening whistle. Of the 4 remaining goalies, I thought Miller looked the weakest in the last round and it was quite apparent tonight. I’d love for it to go 7 games. What happened to the Sharks? They gave up on themselves.
WRT Conyers & Co. … I thought the House and Senate Dems were coordinating their attacks on the Bush regime and that Leahy & Co. would help Conyers be an effective leader like Waxman. That hearing you mentioned, with Whitehouse, DiFi, Schumer was the best I’ve ever seen.

I know some people who gave up on baseball after ‘94 too. Damn shame, that strike – one of the dumbest things MLB has ever done. Here in DC though we finally have baseball back in town for the past three years (after a 34 year absence), so even though the Nats have a pitiful record, they’re still OUR Nats :-)

I know what it’s like purnaise. I was a Dale Earnhardt fan since he drove a yellow car. People hated him, said he was a cheater. I knew better. He changed racing forever. Everyone drives like he used to. And because of this crash, he changed safety for everyone.

He’s a journalism student, and his advisor did some of the on-ice announcing for the Sharks games. He heard they’re looking for an intern who can write (I’m not sure in what capacity) and asked my son, who played hockey for 8 years. No details yet, but I’m keeping everything crossed, too.

I’m late to Late Late Nite, and tired, but something’s really bothering me. I watched a lot of the Judiciary hearing this morning, and was shocked at what little coverage it got in the msm.
CNN did a piece on Dobbs show that made it sound like Gonzales was doing great and gaining support! What hearing were they watching?

Then, and I know this was stoopid, but lost half an our of my life I’ll never get back watching ABC’s evening news. They didn’t cover the hearing at all. Nada. Zip. Zilch.

The DOJ, our DOJ, is in serious trouble, the AG is either a complete idiot or wants everyone to think he’s an idiot, and no one knows about it except for the people on the blogs who watched the hearing online or overnight. It’s about to be rerun on regular cspan in about 10 minutes.

How the hell are Americans going to fix this country if the media watchdogs are ignoring the problems?

Don’t mean to be a bummer, but at times like this I really fear for this country.

Koreas adopt military agreement

North and South Korea adopted a military agreement Friday enabling the first train crossing of their heavily armed border in more than half a century, the South’s Defense Ministry said.

The rail test, planned for Thursday, would be the first time trains have crossed the tightly sealed border since inter-Korean rail links were severed in the middle of the 1950-53 Korean War.

I missed the Gonzo hearings yesterday and today’s coverage is pretty meak. I guess it was boring, or that’s how it sounds. Did anyone ask him why he hasn’t turned over the documents that they’ve asked for?

Anyone read Richard Perle’s oped in the WaPo today? He says that he never said that Iraq had to pay for 9/11. Who do you believe, him or Tenet? I mean, we went to war in Iraq, which is what Perle wanted, so wtf is he talking about? I was going to comment, but there were already 10 pages of hate mail. This guy is pretty easy to hate.

The study also indicated that a small percentage of those surveyed may have mistreated noncombatants. This survey should spur reflection on our conduct in combat. …

Some may argue that we would be more effective if we sanctioned torture or other expedient methods to obtain information from the enemy. They would be wrong. Beyond the basic fact that such actions are illegal, history shows that they also are frequently neither useful nor necessary.

There is every chance. The melamine poisonings were only detected because thousands of beloved pets suffered and died – our life companions were the FDA’s first line of testing for pet food safety.

We are the first line of testing for human food safety.

The FDA is limited to visual inspection of the stream of proceessed food ingredients flowing into our ports every day. Food commodity exports from third world economies are prepared with third world safety checks (from China, none at all).

Our human public health system would only detect acute symptoms of poisoning from food adulterants. Acute symptoms show up over weeks.

Chronic symptoms may present more subtly, slowly accumulating over weeks and months. Chronic injury resulting in end organ damage (kidney, liver, heart, etc) will not be detected until many Americans “progressed” onto chronic disease – by which time the damage will be irreversible.

The first line of defense for the safety of imported human food products is our broken network of ER’s – and our death certificates.
