Words of wisdom, EDP !!!
TRex @ 8
Ditto!
TexBetsy @ 4
(Tapping foot) What’s this I hear about an M&M shortage?
The Jam!
Suz, last post #248 has crossed the line of good manners, IMO.
TRex @ 8
Well thank you :)
She’s a doll, and having her here has improved my life as well.
punaise @ 12
That’s entertainment.
Thanks, Petrocelli, fixed
Just stopped by to see if lolo got another zed. thank goodness cinnamonape was there to save us.
Now off to bed. Got a full day and a half on tap for tomorrow.
EvilDrPuma @ 7
Hey EDP –
This is a bit of a drive-by, but your bewailing the lack of good chinese food in Iowa City made me realize that you share a hometown with one of my favorite people – a woman who is in the Iowa Writer’s program.
Not that you’d know her.
But my point – and I do have one, is that NPR had a piece on a Chinese Restaurant employment agency. Seriously. It’s in New York’s Chinatown, and folks get shipped all over the country.
There’s a second part of the story, here, that talks about how little they all get paid.
FWIW.
The Jam was my #2 favorite British Group of the late 70’s and early ’80’s.
Good political lyrics…for example “Little Boy Soldiers”
“Its funny how you never knew what my name was,
Our only contact was a form for the election.
These days I find that you don’t listen,
These days I find that we’re out of touch,
These days I find that I’m too busy,
So why the attention now you want my assistance -
What have you done for me.
You’ve gone and got yourself in trouble,
No you want me to help you out.
These days I find that I can’t be bothered,
These days I find that its all too much,
To pick up a gun and shoot a stranger,
But I’ve got no choice so here I come – war games.
I’m up on the hills, playing little boy soldiers,
Reconnaissance duty up at 5:30.
Shoot shoot shoot and kill the natives,
You’re one of us and we love you for that.
Think of honour, Queen and country,
You’re a blessed son of the British Empire,
God’s on our side and so is Washington.
Come out on the hills with the little boy soldiers.
Come on outside – I’ll sing you a lullaby,
Or tell a tale of how goodness prevailed.
We ruled the world – we killed and robbed,
The fucking lot – but we don’t feel bad.
It was done beneath the flag of democracy,
You’ll believe and I do – yes I do – yes I do -
yes I do –
These days I find that I can’t be bothered,
To argue withthem well what’s the point,
Better to take your shots and drop down dead,
then they send you home in a pine overcoat
With a letter to your mum
Saying find enclosed one son – one medal and a note -
to say he won.”
EvilDrPuma @ 11
Too many people, not enough m&m’s. We have some now though. We just go through them quickly.
Suzanne @ 10
Ditto squared !!!
TRex @ 5
And they seem to go all the way up.
TRex @ 15
I’m going underground.
Mutant Poodle @ 18
*Sigh* Why am I not surprised? Must be run by Republicans.
TRex @ 8
Make that a double ditto here. My son’s mother shares some issues with Cassie’s, so I know exactly where she is coming from. He has not spoken to her since he was 3.
TexBetsy @ 20
Okay, then.
Amy’s definitely got it goin’ on…(dommage about the tattoos, IMO)
Mutant Poodle — did you or Pach ever email Cassie? She wanted to show you the email she sent to her blogging group. They got two new posts tonight and a conversation going about the goals of the blog, the format, etc.
T Rex!!!
Hey, her hair makes her look a little like Kobe..
Just read an article about her but didn’t beleive what they said about her hair.
They were right about the voice, though.
Well, I must be back because it’s 1am here north of Boston and I’m online at the Lake.
Good to see you, T-man, give Jane a big hug for me.

Jane will be so annoyed that she missed you.
Hi Suzanne!
I’m almost back, life threw a little curve, but after a big family wedding on Sat, I’m free for firepupdom again. It’s been a lovely welcome, thanks so much for remembering me.
TexBetsy @ 34

I posted the same thing twice by mistake.
Would you please delete #39?
Thank you !
She’s upstairs asleep right now. But when she gets up tomorrow, I’ll give her a big hug.
TRex thanks for the video. She is so talented. Do you know if this song is available on disc or mp3?
Can’t do this without zigging up the works.
But wrt Comment #10:
[Ditto] x 3. Probably x [Everybody at the Lake], if you were to take a poll.
I’m very sorry General Petraeus, but when did America ever occupy the moral high ground?
Many Americans are great, no doubt but American foreign policy has never allowed the U.S. to occupy the moral high ground … and that is as ironic as it is true.
… hmmm … Gandhi has been exorcised …

Hey, Your Generalness? Go fuck yourself.
TB – she may have tried me in one of the earlier posts – I’ve been away from the computer for a while.
Took me awhile to get to the comments this time. I simply had to get up and dance to teh great video. Thanks TRex!
Today’s midnight snack should surprise no one.

G’nite Mp & GW.
TexBetsy @ 60
Got it. I’ll send a note tomorrow.
I think I need to go read the last thread. Y’all are loving me a bit too much. Back in a bit.
I’m going to call it a night, too. May the Farce be with you.
Night, EDP. So they gave you the Friday final? That’s cruel and unusual punishment. How many students?
Thank you all. This is quite a community you’ve built. I love progressives.
TRex – thanks for teh Amy – I love her so. I go around singing ‘Rehab’ at school and get many strange looks.
EvilDrPuma @ 69
Sleep well friend.
TexBetsy @ 71
Definitely feels like home. And as I said above, I know, personally, much (though fortunately not all) of what Cassie is going through.
greenwarrior @ 51
My pleasure. I’m so glad that the crowd here at the Lake likes Miss Amy as much as I do.
Alright, I’m scooping up my copy of “Little Dorrit” and heading for bed.

Hi, Aunt Betsy!
Is it too early to start a Cassie M & M and College Scholarship fund?
Bob in HI
(waving to skippy – my fav ‘roo)
I am guessing the m&m habit may cost as much as college. We’re counting on a scholarship for her.
TexBetsy @ 79
Yes, but you were there when she really desperately needed someone the most. The addicted cause so much pain to so many around them (though not nearly as much as they do to themselves). It takes years to recover from the chaos, or at least it did for me. Fortunately, my son was too young to know much of what was going on. Her leaving, however, left permanent marks and when she tried to re-establish cintact 15 years later, he would not speak to her and has not since.
Please consider this the do not quote comments that already have comments quoted inside them comment.
Don’t make me use the bold.

Suzanne @ 87
So how do we quote comments that already have comments quoted inside of them? ;-)
Without making a zig, that is?
Felix Moronia @ 91
Huh??? I think I missed the reference here.
Felix Moronia @ 91

To dezig, when you quote this comment, start at the beginning of the quoted comment in the box where you type. delete everything that says “< and the word ‘blockquote’ and then another >.
That will de-zig it.

Good morning all. Wondering why I keep finding myself in insomnia-ville lately…
I think it has to do with the knowledge there are total incompetents running the highest levels of our government.
Yes!! That’s it exactly! Thank you Suzanne ;-)
And in Texas news ….

pssst hey, newtonusr, I’m at the previous thread if you wanna talk Hockey. *g*
I know some people who gave up on baseball after ‘94 too. Damn shame, that strike – one of the dumbest things MLB has ever done. Here in DC though we finally have baseball back in town for the past three years (after a 34 year absence), so even though the Nats have a pitiful record, they’re still OUR Nats :-)
TexBetsy @ 134
ah, a stand of principle, a renunciation of something you love for a higher cause.
quite admirable.
there are other boycotts i can and do maintain, but mets and baseball would be unthinkable.
tbsa @ 124
No, there were too many Republican’ts protecting his behind with diversionary tactics.
Bob in HI
TexBetsy @ 134
I hear ya Tex, they lost me too (MLB not the Mets) and now-a-days…with BB gonna break the HR record. He should be arrested instead of inducted…must be a republican. *grin
Anyone ever heard of NO SWEAT? Cotton clothing, decent prices, and they pay decent wages to Americans to sew them. I just got new sneakers & t-shirts.
(looking around – I don’t see a no hockey sign on this thread)
Lou, I often refer to BB as B*rry B*nds ;-)
LoudounLib @ 144
Just makes me sick. I know records are made to be broken…but not by breaking the rules.
Lou Costello @ 145
there is no baseball prison, but there should be.
Exactly, Lou. He does NOT deserve any accolades at all, and I hope it’s a big yawn all over the country if and when he breaks Aaron’s record. Of course I kind of hope BB comes down with a hammy before then ;-)
dmg, agreed.
Did anyone/everyone see Jane Fonda on Stephen Colbert…Gold I tells ya, comedy gold!
Suzanne @ 143
in that case …
The Sens/Sabres game was good from the opening whistle. Of the 4 remaining goalies, I thought Miller looked the weakest in the last round and it was quite apparent tonight. I’d love for it to go 7 games. What happened to the Sharks? They gave up on themselves.
WRT Conyers & Co. … I thought the House and Senate Dems were coordinating their attacks on the Bush regime and that Leahy & Co. would help Conyers be an effective leader like Waxman. That hearing you mentioned, with Whitehouse, DiFi, Schumer was the best I’ve ever seen.
Ditto on the hammy.
LoudounLib @ 138
“94 was the year that the Montreal Expos were favored to win the World Series and then the strike …
They never recovered from the strike, many of their star players moved south of the border and eventually, the Expos became the Nationals.
Is Colbert married? Thought he was gay.
Lou Costello @ 145
I think McGuire’s record should be stricken as well as Sosa’s stats, Palmeiro’s stats, …
My first game was SFGiants – my dad took me back when I was a pre-teen. My oldest girl is a bit of a rebel and likes the A’s (and the Raiders but she was born East Bay) – youngest girl likes the Giants.
We are a mixed family.
Lou, just finished watching Colbert and Fonda. Hilarious!
I grew up a Yankees fan and started rooting for the Mets in college. Then married a Mets fan.
OK, if you’re gonna bring up hockey, yes, the Sharks fell apart. They looked like the Giants in a “June Swoon” just early. They broke my heart again. (But my son is being considered for an internship with them, so I’ll forgive them next year.)
Giants, through thick and thin.
punaise, what about B*rry though?

What’s the legal term for “large sum paid to Governor’s aide in recompense for services mostly not provided.”?
[In case the answer may be “bribe”, please consider one or more of the following:
- wire fraud (was von Heune’s billing on steroids?)
- campaign law violation
- bribery
- failure to disclose gifts to Governor’s confidant , longtime friend ,- uh - “speech coach”….
- conspiracy
Would discussion of probable indictments and calculation of sentence ranges be unseemly?]
mutzali @ 158
Good luck to him, in what capacity will he be interning?
Ok, time to try and get off the insomnia track. Thanks for the chat and the sports talk, everyone. Good night!
very interesting, KM. I wonder if the AG (Jerry Brown) would do the investigation?
punaise @ 165
I know what it’s like purnaise. I was a Dale Earnhardt fan since he drove a yellow car. People hated him, said he was a cheater. I knew better. He changed racing forever. Everyone drives like he used to. And because of this crash, he changed safety for everyone.
Just lovin’ this: It’s all in What You Give!

dmg @ 178
Here’s to hoping Colbert’s wife has a deeply nuanced sense of humor. Jane was trying to ruin him! Screamingly funny.
He’s a journalism student, and his advisor did some of the on-ice announcing for the Sharks games. He heard they’re looking for an intern who can write (I’m not sure in what capacity) and asked my son, who played hockey for 8 years. No details yet, but I’m keeping everything crossed, too.

ET, that is why I was thinking of the State AG, Jerry Brown, former Gov. Moonbeam, recent Mayor of Oakland.
newtonusr @ 181
Their kissing scene, the time when Jane and Gloria were on, was priceless and this … my wife kept wanting to know why I was laughing so hard, and I couldn’t stop to tell her.
Question for someone who say/heard the hearing today:
Which DemRep destroyed Abu today? I heard about it, but had to step away just before it started.
Loved the Colbert moment the other night, too.
Twas good to see him blush so *g*
I’m late to Late Late Nite, and tired, but something’s really bothering me. I watched a lot of the Judiciary hearing this morning, and was shocked at what little coverage it got in the msm.
CNN did a piece on Dobbs show that made it sound like Gonzales was doing great and gaining support! What hearing were they watching?
Then, and I know this was stoopid, but lost half an our of my life I’ll never get back watching ABC’s evening news. They didn’t cover the hearing at all. Nada. Zip. Zilch.
The DOJ, our DOJ, is in serious trouble, the AG is either a complete idiot or wants everyone to think he’s an idiot, and no one knows about it except for the people on the blogs who watched the hearing online or overnight. It’s about to be rerun on regular cspan in about 10 minutes.
How the hell are Americans going to fix this country if the media watchdogs are ignoring the problems?
Don’t mean to be a bummer, but at times like this I really fear for this country.
Suzanne @ 187
Hope I didn’t mislead – the aide is on the Gov’s staff, but not paid with taxpayer funds (see revised coment above…:)
newtonusr, i missed the hearings too. marcy has a post up about one congressman nailing abu
Petrocelli @ 188
Nice to see Jane relax and not give a crap what anyone thinks.
Did you see Stewart tonight? Raunchy, hilarious joke as he was handing off to Steven.
newtonusr, missed the JS-SC joke — what happened?
Lou Costello – if you’re still around you have mail.

Off to read Marcy. Thanks for linky.
i only heard the laughter and saw the red faces… missed it too newtonusr – wanna share?
newtonusr @ 195
Yes, the best comedy team since Ralph and Norton.
BTW, Wexler gave Abu a very good smackdown.
newtonusr, Wexler was great, Waters was too. Sanchez was good. Basically, you could tell who was prepared and who wasn’t. Ok, it was pretty obvious who was a former prosecutor too. ;) Several of them were.
It’s now rerunning on cspan. It just started and Gonzales is giving his opening statement.
sweet, TOW, thanks and have it on now.
TribeScribe @ 195
How to put this discreetly – Jon suggested that once Jane left the set, there would need to be seat cushion maintenance…
punaise @ 159
Woo Hoo – I’m with You! da Giants rule!
No wonder the faces were red and they were laughing “dirty”.
good on Stewart for the razz.
priceless –
TheOtherWA @ 200

Wexler needed 5 more minutes and Abu would have been weeping, And that committee needs Paul Hodes.
Suzanne and newtonusr, you’re very welcome.
Suzanne @ 205
Suz, if you get a chance, go to comedy central dot com and watch Stephen’s interview with Jane. He got some great one liners in, but she was in her element, whispering seductively to Stephen … “Never hold back your fantasies about me …” – something like that. It was a comedy gem and he let her “own” him.

Palast: I know because I have Karl Rove’s emails. No kidding. He and his team aren’t the sharpest knives in the drawer. They sent copies of their plans to GeorgeWBush.ORG instead of GeorgeWBush.COM addresses — and, heh heh, they ended up in my in-box. Who says this job ain’t fun?

IIRC In the first days of the invasion it was reported that Halliburton had lain a pipeline into that port area “to provide ‘water’” from Kuwait, again memory has it reported a 16″ pipe – which carries a whole lot of water, considering there is the Tigres/Euphrates supply at hand. But then, pipes have a remarkable quality of working either direction and work with all kinds of liquids. This was from Irish Times of the period (ireland.com). (comment 260)

It wouldn’t surprise me if it were. It’s already been fed to chickens, pigs and fish – and who knows what else.
morning y’all
I’m sure someone will be along to disabuse me of it, but am lovin Ret. Gen. Batiste – just caught him via TiVo on K.O. – he embodies what I’ve been screaming for – not to mention that little bit of snark about not having any ties to defense related companies – can’t wait for next week’s ad with Maj. Gen. Eaton – he was the first to speak out and acquitted himself well in the Vanity Fair article – carrumba!
Duty, Honor, Country
I missed the Gonzo hearings yesterday and today’s coverage is pretty meak. I guess it was boring, or that’s how it sounds. Did anyone ask him why he hasn’t turned over the documents that they’ve asked for?
Anyone read Richard Perle’s oped in the WaPo today? He says that he never said that Iraq had to pay for 9/11. Who do you believe, him or Tenet? I mean, we went to war in Iraq, which is what Perle wanted, so wtf is he talking about? I was going to comment, but there were already 10 pages of hate mail. This guy is pretty easy to hate.

Check the ingredients on the label.
Wheat gluten – wikipedia
A lot of protein powders rely on whey, which is not the same.
Whey – wikipedia
and here’s more on wheat gluten and foods that may contain it. Sorry for the cheap and easy wiki links.

What is the current status on the repeal of MCA (Military Commissions Act) and how soon can that repeal be presented for a public veto and attendant publicity?

New thread…
I just want to say I’m shocked, absolutely shocked I tell you to read the following over via Crooks and Liars:
JUSTICE DEPARTMENT
Administration Withheld E-Mails About Rove
By Murray Waas, National Journal
National Journal Group Inc.
Thursday, May 10, 2007
The Bush administration has withheld a series of e-mails from Congress showing that senior White House and Justice Department officials worked together to conceal the role of Karl Rove in installing Timothy Griffin, a protg of Rove’s, as U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Arkansas.
(I know this was revealed in previous threads, but don’t you agree it bears repeating?)

in teh mean time;
I was concerned by the results of a recently released survey conducted last fall in Irasq that revealed an apparent unwillingness on the part of some US personnel to report illegal actions taken by fellow members of their units. The study also indicated that a small percentage of those surveyed may have mistreated noncombatants. This survey should spur reflection on our conduct in combat. …
Some may argue that we would be more effective if we sanctioned torture or other expedient methods to obtain information from the enemy. They would be wrong. Beyond the basic fact that such actions are illegal, history shows that they also are frequently neither useful nor necessary.

There is every chance. The melamine poisonings were only detected because thousands of beloved pets suffered and died – our life companions were the FDA’s first line of testing for pet food safety.
We are the first line of testing for human food safety.
The FDA is limited to visual inspection of the stream of proceessed food ingredients flowing into our ports every day. Food commodity exports from third world economies are prepared with third world safety checks (from China, none at all).
Our human public health system would only detect acute symptoms of poisoning from food adulterants. Acute symptoms show up over weeks.
Chronic symptoms may present more subtly, slowly accumulating over weeks and months. Chronic injury resulting in end organ damage (kidney, liver, heart, etc) will not be detected until many Americans “progressed” onto chronic disease – by which time the damage will be irreversible.
The first line of defense for the safety of imported human food products is our broken network of ER’s – and our death certificates.
Bon appetit!
