(Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is testifying today before the House Judiciary Committee. The committee website is streaming video and C-Span3 is broadcasting it as well. During liveblogging, please stay on topic in the comments, and please try to hold yourself back from extraneous comments where possible to be kind to our servers. Thanks! — CHS)
Well well well. Looks like Christy was on to something when she noticed Abu dancing on the head of a pin when he said he had "reviewed the documents available to Congress." According to Murray Waas, seems like there were a few others:
Several of the e-mails that the Bush administration is withholding from Congress, as well as papers from the White House counsel's office describing other withheld documents, were made available to National Journal by a senior executive branch official, who said that the administration has inappropriately kept many of them from Congress.
The senior official said that Gonzales, in preparing for testimony before Congress, has personally reviewed the withheld records and has a responsibility to make public any information he has about efforts by his former chief of staff, other department aides, and White House officials to conceal Rove's role.
"If [Gonzales] didn't know everything that was going on when it went down, that is one thing," this official said. "But he knows and understands chapter and verse. If there was an effort within Justice and the White House to mislead Congress, it is his duty to disclose that to Congress. As the country's chief law enforcement official, he has a higher duty to disclose than to protect himself or the administration."
Wouldn't it be great if someone slipped a note to someone on the Committe and asked him about it.
*******
FRANKS (R-AZ) — We're sorry we're making it so hard for you to protect America by conducting this witch hunt. Abu says the department has been politicized as if it hasn't been a damn near religious crusade on the part of BushCo. "It would be hard to make a decision for political reason and get away with it." Miraculously his head does not explode in a fiery ball of flame. Franks genuflects and kisses the hem of Abu's gown.
KING: All of us here on the committee are concerned with our reputations. Well, some more than others.
SHERMAN (D-CA) — Are there any people who have been held more than a month who have been denied habeus corpus? Abu doesn't know. As the Attorney General don't you think that might be something you might want to know about? Abu says it's a big government and he can't know what everybody is doing like they were asking him about the need for restocking supplies in the DoJ cleaning closet. "I look forward to a definitive answer for the record," says Sherman.
Sherman wants to know if he'd fire the 8 US attorneys all over again. Abu babbling about process. Doesn't want to answer.
Would it be inappropriate to fire a US attorney because they successfully prosecuted a Republican? Oooh Abu does not want to answer that one either. Points to Atrios' BFF Ney as an example of when they didn't do that but won't answer definitively. Wonder what Moronica will have to say about that one?
CHABOT (R-OH) — Let's give Abu a rest by changing the topic to his "Operation Safe Neighborhoods." Did the Republicans not get the memo on what the hearing was about? Somebody should let them read the subpoenas before they go out, it really isn't fair if nobody showed them.
BALDWIN (D-WI) — Wants to submit a New York Times article, "A Woman Wrongly Convicted and a U.S. Attorney Who Kept His Job." Did USA Bikubic get his name off the firing list by conducting a partisan investigation? "The White House has indicated they played no role." That's slippery.
From the article:
The United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, which heard Ms. Thompson’s case this month, did not discuss whether her prosecution was political — but it did make clear that it was wrong. And in an extraordinary move, it ordered her released immediately, without waiting to write a decision. “Your evidence is beyond thin,” Judge Diane Wood told the prosecutor. “I’m not sure what your actual theory in this case is.”
Members of Congress should ask whether it was by coincidence or design that Steven Biskupic, the United States attorney in Milwaukee, turned a flimsy case into a campaign issue that nearly helped Republicans win a pivotal governor’s race.
Abu says "ask Sampson."
GOHMERT (R-TX): Says all this OT stuff is not the point of the hearing. Is he the only Republican who got the memo? So he takes the opportunity to "defend" Linda Sanchez for her "honest mistake" of not being able to remember what she said a few minutes before. Says she should not be judged like Abu has been judged. Congressional concern troll.
Clinton getting kicked around for replacing 89 US attorney, which must have been political. Nobody seems to have anything to say about St. Ronnie or Codpiece Sr. doing the same thing:
"Reagan replaced 89 of the 93 U.S. attorneys in his first two years in office. President Clinton had 89 new U.S. attorneys in his first two years, and President Bush had 88 new U.S. attorneys in his first two years" — LA Times
SCHIFF (D-CA): Dominici was worried Iglesias didn't have his best people on "corruption cases," Sept '05. Second conversation, '06, they talked about voter fraud. Schiff says none of his Senate testimony said he discussed voter fraud with Dominici.
Schiff says that Abu testified that based on these three conversations he lost confidence in Iglesias, but after these three he went to visit Iglesias in July 06 to meet and never mentioned voter fraud or corruption, only immigration issues.
Gonzales' spokesman said publicly that corruption cases were never mentioned in the Dominici/Abu conversations, which was misleading. Abu splitting hairs and Schiff is pissed about the doublespeak. Says Abu has little respect for the people in his department and he should resign.
emptywheel in the comments:
Oh, this is quite good. Really hammering AGAG on his inconsistent behavior about the Domenici conversations.
Now AGAG is MELTING!!! He knows he’s covered.
CANON: I'm just a bit too thick to follow the testimony, can you tell me whether you were talking about Iglesias or Cummings?
JORDAN (R-OH): Didn't get the memo either. Wants to ask probing questions regarding Hometown Heros Survivor Benefit Act. Boy howdie if it hadn't been for the US Attorney scandal I'm sure they would've subpoenaed the Attorney General of the United States and yanked his BVDs to the Hills to address the controversy swirling around that one.
DAVIS (D-AL): Is it your practice to sample the opinions of US Senators regarding the performance of US Attorneys? Abu says "of course not." Davis: are there any Democratic Senators who expressed their concerns that terminations were based on? Not that Abu can recall.
Is there any reason for the disparity for the number of elected Democrats prosecuted and the number of elected Republicans prosecuted? Abu says he doesn't know anything about this. What, does he live under a frigging rock? 85% Democrats, 12% Republicans. Abu actually says "I know nothing," catches himself in his Sgt. Schultz impression. Abu will not answer the question Davis is asking — would he be concerned if he knew 7 times as many Democrats were being prosecuted?
LUNDGREN (R-CA): Admitting articles saying Iglesias sucks. He got the memo, too.
Recess for voting, will resume.

Tammy Baldwin, yea!
some signs I put up yesterday:
http://freewayblogger.blogspot…..today.html
As per usual, major kudos to the FDL heavy-lifters here. This is what patriotism looks like.
Tammy Baldwin of WI on the conviction overturn of the woman who was completely acquitted by the appeals court
Baldwin: Did Bskupic(?) prosecute Dem to keep his job?
This thing (the hearings) is so frustrating. Gonzales is not about to tell the truth.
Abu trying to deflect question on Biskupic being on original list by claiming it was all prosecutors on list. Biskupic was career prosecutor
Question. Who has autopen authority for AGAG?
Career and corrupt are not mutually exclusive, Gonzo.
I sent a compilation of Mary4’s questions to John Conyers. Someone should get all of Marcy’s and Hugh’s, and send them, too.
Stonewall, stonewall, stonewall. And AGAG is markedly snottier with woman questioners.
If nothing else, this has been an exercise in exposing — yet again, but for all to see — the pathetic little soldiers with their marching orders ala Franks.
These big polemic speech/questions are simply wasting time. She has labored mightily to bring forth a mouse.
These hearings with the AG have been less than exciting and not particularly productive. I blame my party. The Democratic Party.
Limiting questioners to five minutes and then letting Abu gabble on is ridiculous.
she was too polite and let Abu Gonzales interrupt her and waste her time.
Nothing wrong with congressional members influencing DOJ? Did he just say that?
Oh, ffs, it’s the Jerry Lewis Appreciation Squad again.Oh, he called it a ‘genuine mistake’. Or is he trying to compare Sanchez and Gonzo in a backhanded way, suggesting that Sanchez’s use of ‘target’ lets Gonzo off the hook?
Ah, it’s bullshit logic: the ‘Clinton did it!!1!’ argument.
1,511 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND..
Firepup Patriots:
JEEzus H. keeeeRIST on a god damned crutch…haven’t any of the Democrats on the committee talked to each other in preparation of this hearing, or even durin the recess for fuck’s sake!!
Jest when they get ‘im on the hook about sumpthin some Bozo changes the subjest ta habeas corpus…good god, I can’t watch this perversion, the Dems look like the Three Stooges on steriods. I’m countin’ on FDL ta edit this for me so’s I don’t get the diahrrea.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE MAALOX!!
Oklahoma kiddo @ 18
I said it earlier, but it bears repeating – we’re less than four months into investigations of abuses going back almost 73 months. Conyers is handling this hearing much like many I’ve read about, listened to or watched him participate in or run over the past 42 (!!!) years. He hasn’t exactly made me happy today, but I’d recommend nobody jump to conclusions based on the pace of today’s event.
O Gawd. “Target” again. Bad Dems! Uh, Gohmert? He IS a liar.
The AG has done a pretty good job of saying ’screw you’, you’re gettin’ nuttin’ outta me. This is disgusting.
Wow. Gohmert playing concern tr*ll to the max huh?
Oh Louie, fercrissakes
Gohmert: Don’t call Gonzo a liar…
If Abu could spend an hour or two at FDL, all this would get cleared up in no time.
As the new Waas story makes clear, “the White House” has a tendency to lie about that sort of thing.
Clinton did it! Janet Reno helped!!!
spurious @ 15
Just like the right-wing online trolls usually are. They figure that they can make the Little Ladies cower and widdle on themselves. If he was posting anonymously online, I think he’d be calling them ‘c–ts’ and such, just for that very reason.
Gohmert: But Clinton did it too…
Dr. Tellar #23, you’re right. I think everyone expected the obviousness of the case to make it go quicker and easier.I know I did.
Does the closed door session continue this afternoon or are they on another day?
She didnt say “target” I listened again and didnt hear it. Did anyone else?
if we’re gonna bring up Clinton, why not Nixon while we’re at it?
Gohmert: Don’t call Sanchez a liar either…(great logic, sir.)
Crocodile tears from a Republican let us not blame the Democrat Sanchez for not knowing what she is doing. And while we are at why must Democrats feel obligated to call Republicans crooks and liars when they are nothing more than crooks and liars.
This thing, sitting before a Congressional committee, has singlehandedly brought every court, every judge, every concept of law into disrepute. He is not worthy of the honorium of the title Judge. He personifies what happens when scum are allowed to lie their way into positions of trust. There must be a cell in Guantanimo that has a reservation for him for the balance of his days. [/rave]
Who the hell is this Gohmert Pyle guy?
I’ve told y’all and told y’all that Gohmert is a rancid little turd. I get to hear all about him, thanks to my poor beleaguered family forced to endure his representation.
RonD @ 9
Josh Marshall’s reporting on this issue indicates that it’s a little murkier than that. Biskupic apparently has a good reputation in general and it seems less likely that he prosecuted Thompson over political considerations than some of the other cases we’ve seen.
Less likely. Not impossible.
Given the possibility that there might be little here in terms of the Biskupic issue, I’d like to see more focus on the things we *know* are wrong, like: Why was the White House Liason delegated authority over hirings and firings in the DoJ?
(Just to avoid argument on the issue, I concede that as a WI representative, Baldwin probably has the most responsibility to her constituents to follow up with AG AG on the Biskupic / Thompson debacle.)
Abu Gonzales shouldn’t be shouting out his obvious contempt for women in this hearing. Its going to give his enemies a new avenue to explore.
He’s stupid.
I will keep my party’s feet to the fire. The record of my party over the last seven years in not commendable. I haven’t started yet!
Hey McCay is a democrat! No wonder he his the stealing of the election by the dems in Wa State hahahahaha
Arnie @ 41
What do you expect from a Bushie?
bmaz @ 42
A walking set of White House talking points.
JG# 43, Thanks for the elaboration.
That’s what I love about Maxine Waters — she’d never cower or widdle.
bmaz @ 42
GOP Concern Troll.
Oh, and smearing McKay too. Though his line of questioning actually implies that the GOP smoke about the WA election mattered more than the facts on the ground. Not the smartest bulb.
Arrghgerge! McKay is a Republican, and they DID look at evidence in the 04 election, there was no case there.
Finally someone is bringing up the senate testimony! (schiff of CA)
bmaz @ 42
Aww give the guy a chance – he’s trying to be famous!
rep gomer takes us to new lows. at least something was accomplished today…
Clinton did it!
bmaz @ 42
I’m glad you asked. Take some beta blockers then read here.
AJ @ 51
The only widdling she would do would be on Bush’s trousers.
JGabriel @ 44
I think Biskupic registers as a ‘false positive’ in this: that’s to say, he unwittingly acted w/r/t this case in a way that got the Keepers of the List to regard him as a Loyal Bushie.
snowbird42 @ 37
Yes, but it was a rephrasing in followup. Offhanded use of a hot button. Could have said ‘An object of investigation…’ same thing without the dire weight of a ‘hot’ word. Surely unintentional … Gonzo was not being responsive and she was pressing him every which way.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 26
Yes. It does raise the competence question: is Gonzo really incompetent an AG or instead an extremely competent stonwalling evil Bushie minion?
One of Gohmert’s “finer” moments, from Wiki:

anyone have a count of AGAG’s “i don’t recall”s ?
Weaseldog @ 45
He’s Republican.
Oh. Right.
Ouch. Schiff’s got him by one of his cojones me thinks.
I noticed someone said this was up at TPM. Would it possible to post the link when you find the document.
I have time constraints and sometimes I’m just overwhelmed with how much stuff there is to look thru.
JGabriel @ 62
If I get a vote, it would be the latter.
NorskeFlamethrower @ 23
Leahy & Co. so need to show Conyers & Co. how to hold a hearing … my high school debate team was more coordinated.
Even when he does remember, it’s qualified by “I have a recollection.” Sheesh
Oh, this is quite good. Really hammering AGAG on his inconsistent behavior about the Domenici conversations.
Now AGAG is MELTING!!! He knows he’s covered.
One cojones. Now, get a hold of the other one!!
Selise at #64 – I thought I knew it but I don’t recall
Abu stutters a lot when he’s stressed and doesn’t like the quesitons doesn’t he?
This is getting good …
I’m sorry, didn’t Adam Schiff use to be on Law & Order?
Oh-Oh….consistency.

Nothing in the definitive. This is the only lawyering Abu knows.
snowbird42 @ 37
She did say it – it was early in that part of her questioning. I heard it the second time around.
Smackdown!!!!! Resign mofo!!
Schiff..wow!
And schiff smacks down Cannon as well.
Biodun @ 84
What’s he sayin’?
Finally someone who asks for Abu to resign.
Misleading to be charitable!!
ATTABOY, ADAM!!!
btw, my count on gonzo’s “I don’t recalls” today just passed 70.
Phoenix Woman @ 33
I fear you’re right. Scum.
ohhh pleeeeeezzzzzz
Schiff: What you’ve done shows your contempt for professionals…and I think you should resign.
kdh22 @ 86
Basically stated that Abu is full of it with all the different stories on why the USAs (Iglesias specifically) were fired and what the conversations were about that he had with Domenici and others. Said that as a former member of the dept for six years, Abu not compentent in any way to fix the problems and should resign soonest.
LS @ 88
With scorn was how I heard it.
Apocalypse watch, move the minute hand ahead by five.

Ed*ard Teller @ 89
I knew there was method to Abu’s madness. He’s going for the record.
If you are not going to ask questions about the topic, you should not be allowed to speak during this hearing.
LS @ 72
Step two: Make a Wish no?
Blank Kludge @ 94
with scorn was how he said it.
Women unite! Against the GOP.
Oh god, don’t yield to Mr. Cannon.
Ed*ard Teller @ 89
It sounded more or less like a bazillion, give or take a couple.
Why doesn’t someone hand Abu the constuitution and underline where it says “PLEASURE OF THE PRESIDENT”….
dakine01 @ 99
Just like cruel to be kind, right, Abu TORTURE?
Is there any point to this hearing? If he lies, what then? Obviously this is not going anywhere.
When does this end, hes not quitting.
The AG’s are miserable.
Artur (sp?) and Wasserman-Schultz are coming up next for Dems. My bet is they’ll do a good job. BTW, the guy from Utah is an idiot!
Cannon trying to smack down schiff. Not succeeding.
The ‘pubs are screwing up letting Schiff repeat himself.
**smooches**
TheOtherWA & TiredFed says [May 10th, 2007 at 11:36 am]
Thank you!
Schiff’s my rep. I heckled him for his war vote. I’m glad to see he’s got his nuts now.
Now Cannon just tried to attack Schiff.
Hey Cannon: YOU PEOPLE ARE THE PROBLEM!!
Cannon was speaking through Conyers’ “gentlemna’s time has expired”
Davis of AL former USA.
Davis: Domenici lost confidence in USA. Your practice to sample opionions of Senators? Yes or no?
Of course not.
Davis a former prosecutor as well
Gonzales can lie, polticize the Department of Justice, and bring the rule of law into disrepute but anyone who points this out is being completely inappropriate.
Davis rocks!!
you can tell Davis was a prosecutor. Woohoo Dems v Reps great question!! ^5
Did you ever ask a dem senator of concerns?
Abu: no
Ok Howie … We need to get BlueAmerica fired up and throw Cannon into the ditch!
LJ/Aquaria@58 and 63 – Thanks for the Gomer info. Lovely chap indeed.
Wordsmith @ 109
oooh. smooches. any time!
Put the former prosecutors up first, seniority be damned.
Ooooo, number of Dems vs. R’s prosecuted! Go, go, go, go!
Fern @ 102
I have been wandering in and out – major housecleaning today on my part as one of Ms. ET’s birthday presents.
That’s Debbie Wasserman sitting next to Davis. Did I miss her ?s?
Wordsmith @ 76
fictional Adam Schiff (Manhattan DA) on Law & Order was played by Steven Hill.
This Adam Schiff (former USA) is for real.
FYI: Current Manhattan DA Arthur Branch in Law & Order is played by Fred Thompson (former Senator from TN thinking about running for president).

The Sargent Shultz Defense!!!
University of Minnesota research:
85% of local prosecutions Dems – 12% Repubs

Ooh, handbags. He doesn’t like that one bit.
TheOtherWA @ 121
Alongside that, let’s hear about the number of Dems vs. Thugs successfully prosecuted.
Davis not letting him do a speech.
EvilDrPuma @ 129
Oh, that will be one lop-sided scale, methinks.
Davis: do you sample opinions on all 100 senators about US attorneys?
Abu: NoSir
Davis: Have you asked any Dem Sentors
Abu: Not that I recall
Davis: Is there a disparity btw elected Dems and Republikans prosecuted. Would it concern you.
Abu: I never . . .
Davis: I’d like to put a survey on the record. (Shows terrible disparity)
Cannon(?) Will gentleman yield
Davis: No. Gen. Gonz. does it concern you?
Abu: blah, what’s the basis of these numbers (whines)
Davis: Let’s go back to Wisconsin case (Georgia Thompsen) . . .
I hope Al Gore picks Artur Davis as his AG! “No, I won’t yield (you assf*ck!)”
This guy is good. I guess being from Alabama is good practice for dealing with people like Abu.
Is he an atty? He sure questions like one.
Gonzales refusing to recognize the facts of the 80% to 12% ratio of Democratic to Republican prosecutions.
Davis is punching at will…
Woodhall Hollow @ 134
Former USA
Abu is getting combative – refusing to answer directly – chewing up Dem questioning time while verbally squirming…
And now Conyers is acting like he wants this thing over too.
Why the hell is Conyers shutting him down?
Davis: Jury misconduct was not investigated.
I have been watching a nice clear stream of this today on my Windows Media Player. I’m disgusted and heartsick. I honestly believe Gonzales is ENJOYING himself, like a bratty child.
I’m going to use a word I heard Jon Stewart say last night. Clusterf**kery.
Hugh @ 135
He can’t compute that without his Rovian calucator.
Anyone notice the Republican’s desperately trying to shine light on the important work that the DOJ has to get done and how oversight will negatively impact the work?
Of course one needs to only point out that if he cannot manage the “process” of removing USA’s how can the public have trust in him handling the process of these most important Criminal Justice issues.
Davis does a brilliant job of laying out the case of Republican malfeasance at Justice. Gonzales can not be bothered with the facts.
Woodhall Hollow @ 135

Resuming after votes. I love that Arthur Davis.
It needs to be said: Conyers writes better letters than he chairs hearings. He ain’t Hank Waxman.
Why bother resuming….Overall it has been an incoherent shambles.
Hugh @ 145
The truth has a liberal bias – S. Colbert
IrishJim @ 143
I also noticed how AGAG shut that line of questioning down by saying there are lots of career people who do the work, and they will keep doing the work regardless of where Gonzales is.
Confused. Is the hearing adjourned or recessed for a vote?
Are they coming back?
oblio @ 147
Keep Abu in the chair as long as possible.
So far, IMNSHO, Davis of AL, Schiff of CA, Waters of CA, Wexler of FL, and Nadler of NY have asked best, most pointed questions.
The majority of the dems should’ve ceded their time to a few like Wexler and this guy Davis. I liked Sanchez too.
JF @ 149
Sounds fine to me. Let’s let them keep doing the work while Abu rots away in a cell.
JGabriel @ 150
Recessed for vote.
color me underwhelmed. (with a few notable exceptions) but still… on a scale of 1 to 10, ten being best, this hearing, from me, gets a two.
Bulgarian judge?
dakine01 @ 151
don’t forget Cohen.
Hopefully since Gonzo is worn a little, he’ll start making more mistakes when it resumes….
DAVIS: DID YOU ORDER THE CODE RED??
AGAG: YOU’RE DAMN RIGHT I DID!!
I am really dissapointed in Conyers. He seems to have really lost his edge–not at all the guy I remember from the Iran-Contra hearings, for example.
We really owe a debt of gratitude to the Democrats who did ask probing quesitions (I wish there had been more) because Gonzales got nothing but softballs from all of the Republicans. What is important to realize is that if gone about the right way a question dodger and serial forgetter like Gonzales can be nailed no matter how much he squirms and wiggles to avoid saying anything.
I think they’re coming back after the vote, Wasserman Schulz hasn’t has her say yet, and she’s darned tough from what I’ve seen in the past.
Dee Loralei @ 159
Cohen of TN? He’s one of the new ones. We’ve got to give him time to warm up.
Dee Loralei @ 157
Cohen was OK but seemed to let Abu filibuster a little IIRC.
Woodhall Hollow @ 159
He’s gettin’ old…

The cold transcript will yield a few more nuggets than you may think; I’ll give it a generous 3.25
Watt of NC was also excellent.
pseudonymous in nc @ 148
No kidding. I thought I was gonna PUKE when he COMMENDED the AG for his patience. WTF?
Interesting that in the SJC hearing there were few Repubs and the ones there seemed deeply disappointed in Gonzo. The HJC repub members obviously got some new marching orders.
I’ve been listening more than watching, but it seems to me that a comparison between Gonzo’s remarkable memory when pumped by the GOP with fluff and blank memory when asked real questions by Dems could be nicely summarized by somebody for Youtube, or would make excellent Jon Stewart fodder.
President is cluster sputtering on cspan tv… says he agrees with the idea of benchmarks..so now hes is empowering Josh Bolton with finding comonality on benchmarks… woohoo! /fuckery
Good news!
Blue Dogs will mostly vote on short term funding.

oblio @ 147
If our Attorney General and the agency he runs are an incoherent shambles, it’s worthwhile to me to see them reveal themselves in a public hearing.
Gonzales is contempt for Congress personified, and he continues to make a compelling case for his removal based on the incompetence he has testified to all day long.
He thinks he’s smart in the inverted way that can leave him permanently inside-out if he’s not careful: He’ll trade testimony that he’s stupid and negligent for the chance to avoid admitting that he’s also a criminal. Congress will have to prove the criminality on its own, but he’s supplying plenty of interesting contradictions.
The Republican Party thinks, except for a few tokens, that women should be seen; not heard. I absolutely detest this attitude. My Grandmother, my Mother and my Auntie were, and are, the smartest people I have ever known. Females, you don’t need me to exclaim this, but I will: Rise up, and claim your destiny.
Davis was faboo; if he didn’t have prosecution experience, I’d say he was a natural for it. Loved when he said he wouldn’t yield his time. The Rs knew he was killing Abu and trying to disrupt him any way they could.
Then Lungren coming on with his idiotic articles for the record. Why didn’t you submt them before, dumbass?
oblio @ 148
BC the former AUSAs come last–they’re the ones askign the key questions.
Woodhall Hollow @ 161
Wonder how the illegal wiretaps worked for him? Hmmmmmm…
Good questioners:
Conyers first question but nothing after
Waters: What did you know
Wexler: You know but won’t tell us

Oh, FirePups. Such sweet idealism and integrity is espressed in your comments. Such hope for better than this regime has perpetrated on our dear country. The love for what we thought we were, for what has been destroyed by ruthless unprincipled people in power. You make my heart sing even though it’s breaking.
fooj @ 177
Come again? You lost me with this one.
JGabriel @ 62
Both, but primarily the latter.
I love it when who was it? Cannon? Asked stridently, Will the Gentleman yield. And Davis, says No. And continues to question.
Hugh @ 178
And Watt on Mckay on voter fraud in Washington.
If he has his minions do everything he can answer “I dont recall” No wonder there was a secret order for Samson and Goodling
Lawless @ 172 – yes!
and
EW @ 175 – yes!
Hugh @ 178
There were excellent individual questioners, but I have to say this is the most ridiculous process/format I have ever seen. Not to mention the lack of coordination between committee members and the lack of any apparent plan for how to conduct the session.
The next time Gonzo says I don’t know tell he won’t be leaving until he or his aids find out then send him to county jail no club fed for contempt of court, obstruction of justice etc. Make sure his booking takes so long he misses dinner also house him with the violent offenders waiting to go to prison. Those cats will be able to give Gonzo some insight into what its like being locked up call it the scare the Bushies straight program.
snowbird42 @ 173
I hope that sticks. John Aravois had me all freaked out last night when I got home from work. I was about to drive to D.C. (some 3000 miles) or Canada (only 600 miles). I just get SO tired of this.
Woodhall Hollow @ 134
Davis is a former USA. ‘Nuff said. :-)
Woodhall Hollow @ 160
Well, it was 20 years ago… back then we were all sharper, thinner and better looking than now. Ok, I might just be speaking for myself here. :)
Re Clinton: I am just waiting for some Dem to look at Gonzales and say, “If Bill Clinton told you to jump off a bridge would you do it? Of course not. How about if he told you to get a blo*job from an intern? What kind of man do I think you are? I think we’ve established that Mr. Attorney General. We’re just trying to see just how easy you are.”

TheOtherWA @ 192
Nah, I resemble that myself. I even still had a little hair up top. Not much but a little.
Has anyone thought to ask this nimrod the following: if you couldn’t manage the personnel decisions at the DOJ, why are we supposed to think you can manage the enormously more complex counter-terrorism apparatus of the federal government? If you had to delegate personnel decisions to two inexperienced political hacks, who are you delegating our counter-terrorism operations to? The position of AG is now a matter of life and death for Americans. How can a man who doesn’t remember seventy per cent of what he’s told possibly be competent to do that job?
TheOtherWA @ 192
“I was so much older then, I’m younger than that now.”
I think if you took just the Democrats and their questions, this hearing would come off looking pretty decent, but when you add in virtually every Republican ducking the issue, defending the indefensible, or going completely off topic and those Democrats who were less than clear or incisive it does look like a shambles. But that was the primary goal of the Republicans. They don’t want the truth to come out. They want to bury it.
Maybe the Dems need to funnel all their questions through a few mouthpieces, to maintain some cohesion and consistency with the questions. Just yield time to Waters or Davis, time after time.
Snow being played while Comm in recess.
Lord, I’m sooo reminded of Max Headroom. Look and sound both.
I hope someone’s put a mashup on YouTube.
Art of Noise has a sweet early Video Toaster treatment for ‘Paranomia’ that uses Max in a box mixed in with other ‘virtual’ reality.

THIS HEARING:
….and yes, it does seem the ‘Young Turks’ are champing at the bit.
And Maxine Waters. And our man whose characterization was ‘charitable’.
Davis’ high honors at Harvard plus obvious talent plus courtroom experience for DoJ shows.
Gonzales’ tack is to survive–no knock-out punch, he stays.
It is simply not enough to ask tough questions and force answers. The Dems must with one voice call for his resignation and be willing to back it up. I’m just not seeing that political muscle, but then again, I’ve lost what little patience I had left with this process.
TheOtherWA @ 190
Some of us age better than others! ;-)
That said, Conyers didn’t seem to have much fire–like he just didn’t have the heart for this. I was disappointed with his deference to Abu–particularly with Davis. Abu deserved to be cut off for trying to run out the clock with non-answers.
emptywheel @ 177:
That’s exactly it. The last ones up are the ones whose questions will linger in the press’ collective minds.
And IIRC, none of the Reps currently on the committee ever were AUSAs or USAs.
dalloway @ 193
Not to worry, dalloway, there are no doubt other Monica Goodlings out there taking care of our counter-terrorism efforts.
LJ/Aquaria @ 195
seconded, thirded, and fourthed. please!
Last two questioners on the D side should be Wasserman-Schultz and Ellison. Did I miss anyone? Who’s left on the R side?
Exactly! :D
FYI, Jane is upstairs
How many times if any did Gonzo say I don’t know in response to a Republican question? How many times at this hearing and the last one.
More of that Internet gossip..

May 10, 2007 — WMR has received a third well-placed confirmation that Vice President Dick Cheney, while CEO of Halliburton, was a client of the escort service of DC Madam, Deborah Jeane Palfrey. In addition, one of Cheney’s closest military advisers and friends was also a client of the DC Madam’s Pamela Martin & Associates escort service. Cheney used the escort service while he was a part time resident of the posh Ballantrae section of McLean, Virginia.
After intense pressure from the White House and Disney executives, ABC News killed the DC Madam client story after having been given exclusive access to Palfrey’s ten years’ of phone call records.
Is there a rule that Cannon is breaking so he can be thrown from the committee? *cackle*
Nina Katarina @ 204
Wasserman-Schultz was doing the Thirty Something show last night. I hope she had time to study up.
Phoenix Woman @ 190
I wish they would limit questioning to the former USAs, and remove the 5-minute time limit.
mui @ 209
Or at least to the…puffy chair!
Woodhall Hollow @ 201
Conyers looked terribly exhausted today, perhaps in pain.
My son and I have been checking this out, and he brought up an interesting analogy to the fired USA’s: It’s like Abu & Co were parents who heard from someone that their kids had done something bad, but never talked to the kids about it. No confirmation, no analysis of the situation. Nope. Just threw them out on the street. The kiddo said, “Any parent who did that would be considered a really bad parent, so why does this loser get a free pass on it?”
Anybody hear anything on Keith Roberts, an innocent vet jailed by US Atty Stephen Biskuic?
Abu Gonzales and all the rubber-stamp Republicans on the committee are obstructing justice.
All these rubber-stamp congressional Republicans are doing is providing Fox News with visuals and sound bites for Fox News to keep replaying over and over again, fooling their vacuous viewers, and trying to hide the cancerous involvement of Karl Rove and the White House in the U.S. Attorney firings.
Woodhall Hollow @ 200
Over and over and over.
Frank33 @ 209: “May 10, 2007 — WMR has received a third well-placed confirmation that Vice President Dick Cheney, while CEO of Halliburton, was a client of the escort service of DC Madam, Deborah Jeane Palfrey.”
Madsen = National Enquirer of DC journalism.
I’m not saying there’s nothing there, just that Madsen can’t be relied on. Hopefully, someone else will look into it and report on it if it’s true.
Until then, it’s just a rumour.
A *fun* rumour, yes. But not yet a well-sourced rumour.
Jackie @ 214
Jackie, thanks for raising that question.
After Biskupic (or another attorney in his office) railroaded Keith Roberts, how do all the other lawyers there show up for work…at the Department of Justice?
And how do they go home at night and look their husbands and wives and children in the eye?
Silence is assent
When will the career DOJ attorneys break the grey code of silence?
When will they come forth and share their knowledge of their co-workers’ abuse of power?
When will they stop being the “Good Germans” of Rove’s DOJ?
I found all the questions about American citizens being held w/o rights unsettling. Do they know something?
portia.vz @ 193
LOL! I never had my stuff edited before. I try to use symbols instead of spelling things out. But after Chicago Dyke posted here a couple of times, I wasn’t sure where to draw the line. That being said, your daytime audience might be different from the nighttime audience.
Anyway, my comment was a riff on that George Bernard Shaw joke that goes, “Madam, would you sleep with me for $1,000 pounds?”
Solai @ 220
Do you mean, are they holding someone(s) that we don’t yet know about? With this bunch, would it surprise you?
portia at 220 — It’s actually a spam issue. If you think about the word that got modified and the sort of spam that might use that type of word…you will see the issue. ;-)
kirk at 218 — Don’t you dare disparage the people who are trying to hold back this idiocy with every case they are able to handle in a decent and aboveboard fashion. I mean it, people, that is the one thing I will not tolerate. You try making life and death decisions for kids at risk from violence, juveniles, and adult criminals — all of which come flying at you constantly day in and day out, and stay on call 24-hours a day, seven days a week, for years and years. Carrying Grand Jury secrets that no one should ever have to know about what human beings do to each other. And then never, ever make a mistake. Jeebus — no one is perfect, and a lot of these folks are either kids right out of law school or veterans who are doing their damndest to keep decency and ethics alive in these offices. Don’t you dare start spouting some bullshit about a “thin grey line.” I mean it…this situation is bad enough as it is. Don’t you dare.
Well that was a GIANT waste of tax payers dollars…
Is it just me, or is there a touch of the, uhhh, derisive, in Jane’s live-blogging?
You have the strings in the picture wrong. They should be somewhere else.
They’re still holding Padilla after (I’ve lost count of how many years.
