It's funny to see the self-styled "centrists" caution Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Reid to ease up on the investigations of corrupt Republicans that ran Congress for the past twelve years (and both Congress and the White House for the previous six) despite polls showing that there is no "center" any more and if anything, the American public wants even more investigations of corrupt Repubicans.
The conservatives know better — which is why they're scared to death.
How can you tell the leaders of the conservative movement are scared to death of 2008?
They've fallen on their old reliable standby, inflaming and catering to America's bigots.
Yeah, yeah, this is old news: They always do this sort of thing when they're about to get their asses kicked. But the latest wrinkle is that in the hope of grabbing some black and union voters, some of them are trying to spin, in finest Ministry of Truth fashion, their bigotry as progressivism and "civil rights" — a stance explicitly rejected by the NAACP and other leading legitimate civil rights groups because a) it's racist and b) its premise has been shot down by a myriad of legitimate studies, including this one by the Drum Major Institute. (Oh, yes: Remember the ongoing efforts by racists to take over the Sierra Club? The person behind them is John Tanton, the guy who with Roy Beck is the driving force behind the anti-immigrant movement in the US.)
The polls, both opinion and ballot-box, show that fear of Teh Gay is not enough to get voters to side with the Cons any more — it certainly didn't keep the Republicans from losing outright control of Congress last year. So they have to step it up, big-time. This is the result.

I read a caption yesterday in one of those franchised magazines you see on those free newsstands, “Mary has overcome so much: Being Black, widowed, single mom . . . “
Now I know how Lolo does it.
PW!!!
“Centrist”? This word makes me restless.
The best news today is reading that two of the brightest of the purged USA’s think criminal charges will result from the investigations of the DOJ.
Have to recommend, as always, the incomparable Emptywheel on the latest USA scandal stuff.
Also from EW, this.
Can we get Abu G in jail sometime soon? Jeebus.
Phoenix Woman!
And which Democratic nominees for the presidential nomination are “centrists” on the war in Iraq? And which are not? That is to say, those who comprehend the folly that is Iraq and understand their mistaken vote.
I was listening to Ed Schulz briefly yesterday, and he claimed that Dems are scared to death of the 30 second commercial about not supporting the troops if the vote to defund the war. I wanted to say “read the polls Ed!”
People have figured out on their own this war is a disaster, and the Thugs can run all the ads they want and it isn’t gonna play anymore.
Gnome de Plume @ 3
Does it involve locking your zed competition in the basement?
Hello, Phoenix Woman -
In your sentence “corrupt Republicans that ran Congress for the past twelve years (and both Congress and the White House for the despite polls showing” – if you take out ‘for the’ i think the sentence will read better. thanks for all your excellent posts
Get rid of the Democratic Leadership Council!
PW, the more they smear, the less the people listen!!! The Repug’s credibility with the populace is thoroughly shot!!! Not one credible poll has any silver lining for the Repugs!!! Eventually, the MSM, might look at their own polls and actually join the Dems and do serious reporting!!! Sunshine is the best disinfectant!!!
My confidence in our Speaker remains unshakable.
Whenever I hear the word centrist I know somebody is trying to bullshit a ton of people.
It’s funny to see the self-styled “centrists”…
GOP “sin tryst” family values
The center disappeared in 1968 and any contentions by the punditocracy saying otherwise is so much gum flap.
PW –
Did you mean to say this above: (and both Congress and the White House for the past six years)?
Appealing to bigotry isn’t a very good plan when your front runner is a Mormon, methinks.

Yes. Until you get lonely. Then you unlock the door and let ‘em come out and play with you.
AP – The White House threatened on Wednesday to veto a proposed House bill that would pay for the Iraq war only through July — a limit Defense Secretary Robert Gates said would be disastrous.

Have you ever passed a building and noticed it had beautiful ornamentation? It wasn’t that it was absolutely necessary but it showed a real sense of craftsmanship.
I appreciate these things. Take for example how gasoline prices fell precipitously before the November 2006 elections. The price was, of course, manipulated but the masterstroke of it, which shows the genuine love these folks have for their work, is that prices fell through November 7, 2006. Election day was November 8 and that’s when they began to rise again.
It has gone largely unnoticed but we experienced another such moment yesterday. On May 8, 2007, gasoline peaked at $3.036. What’s so special about this, you ask. Well, last year’s peak on August 8-10, 2006 just happened to be $3.036. I realize that many people don’t think that gasoline prices are manipulated or that they are manipulated just some of the time. What I think most people still fail to recognize is that not only are gasoline prices always manipulated they are exquisitely so. These guys take pride in their work.
Chimpy musta heard he’s not on Time’s Top 100 list…OUCH!
Bush per Timmeh “particularly don’t want to hand (the Iraqi war) off to a democratic president”. WTF does that mean????
Keith O. opened with a Big One tonight. A number of Rep. Congresscritters went to the WH today and “told it like it is” to GWB. Whoo Hooo. Check it out.
Hey just got back from the doctor. Turned on TeeVee and KO has breaking news. 11 GOP meet with White House. White House is no longer credible. Teeheehee took them long enough!
And so these Republican rats who have supported the Bush carnage in Iraq are starting to gang up on their leader?
This got EPU’d so I hope people don’t mind me posting it again.

2. he has some intent to end the war before Jan 2009 (false)

It means “We have screwed things up so badly that we can’t afford to allow a Dem to get his/her hands on the reins of government because we’ll go to prison.”
The wheels are really coming off. Scary.
You speak of the Fear of The Gay, as if that was what motivates people to get out and vote for the Party of Bush. You are missing the complexity of the situation. Churches are not allowed to campaign for candidates, but they can campaign for social issues, like anti-Civil Unions. Having an issue like that on the ballot enables churches to use all of their considerable resources to get out the vote. This is where elections are won or lost.
Please visit the Schapira blog, “What we know so far…”

If they did that, they should only fund it through August with any further funding contingent on very strong signs of progress (like shiney happy safe Iraqis who want us to continue keeping them walled in at gunpoint while we steal their oil) verified by Gen. Patraeus and others (HA). Also they need to include an end of funding for all troops, all bases, and contractors including militia.

Fired once more, and they commenced a’runnin’,

And they ran through the briars and they ran through the brambles,
Ran through places where a rabbit couldn’t go,
Ran so fast, the Firepups couldn’t catch’em,
Down to Crawford, Texas and some place in Idaho.

RICH GALEN, REPUBLICAN STRATEGIST: As the only one of the three of us who has actually been there in the summertime, let me tell you, you will do anything to get the hell out of there for two months.
But the — there’s a bigger issue here, that, when they were negotiating the TAL, transitional administrative law, one of the guys came out and told me that they don’t do this. They do a lot of negotiating in the Arab world, but, at the end of it, either you have the goat or I have the goat.
What they’re learning how to do — and I wish it were going faster — is, they’re learning how to split the goat. You get half of it. I get half.
They’re not good at that.

Up next: “The next six, er, eleven months will be critical.”
Even the GOP isn’t buying this tripe anymore. Susan Collins can kiss her Senate seat goodbye.
you know, I was listening to tom Hartman this morning about the voter disenfranchisement and the voter machines with no paper trail this past election
there are precincts that WHEREVER they had no paper trail the machine results were opposite polled results
add those CLEAR victories for democrats, then add the numbers of voters taken off registration, combine those numbers with the people scared into NOT voting and we see just how much of America is SICK TO THEIR STOMACH with this depraved administration
America LONGS for these criminals to be brought to the bar of justice
there IS a centrist American, that American is CLEARLY a progressive, he is clearly NOT a “neo con” (translate “fascist”)
center thinking Americans have UNITED to DEPOSE the criminals in office, they’ve UNITED in their common cause, love for this country, her constitution, AND THE COUNTRY OUR FOR FATHERS DIED FOR
centrists are still there, they’ve joined progressives in our common cause;
THE SURVIVAL OF OUR CONSTITUTION AND THE AMERICA OUR ANCESTORS GAVE US
our government has been overthrown in a silent coup, the officials stole their positions and they’ve done their best to bury our once great republic
this past election our constitution arose like the Phoenix from the great coma the fascists imposed on her, our constitution overcame the death blow these fascists tried to level, our constitution spread her MIGHTY wings, the wings of PEOPLE WHO DEMAND THEIR FREEDOM, who demand a country FOR THE PEOPLE, a country BY THE PEOPLE
this is our last mighty hope, we must hold these criminals to account, we must bring them to the bar of justice, we must not relent, we must POUND and POUND and POUND
they must be brought to the bar of justice and vanquished forever the chance they might regain footing on this land
the investigations MUST GO FORWARD

I’m not so sure. My own definition of “centrist” is “People who voted for George Bush in 2000 or 2004, but voted for Democrats in Congress in 2006.” There’s a whole bunch of them folks.
And we need’em in 2008. Matter of fact, we need’em now.
Bob in HI
The racism of the Republicans is being pulled out in a big way in their immigration policy which has really taken over their talking points lately. It’s really a war on immigrants and it’s dangerous and sick. Where I live, hate is being stirred up. At the local Mexican grocery, a tiny little place that caters to its own and run by citizens, some asshole through a rock through their window. And what about those terrorists that they caught in Alabama that we talked about yesterday who were going to go up and machine gun a bunch of immigrants. This is the result of a hate policy that panders to ignorance and insecurity – some would say, “the base”.

Wouldn’t it be funny if tomorrow’s hearing with Gonzo were like this: Your last appearance before Congress was your opportunity to come straight with us on the facts. Today is like a whole new ballgame. Three strikes and you’re out. That is, 3 I-can’t-recall, I don’t remember, no recollection or variations of those would be called out on strikes.
However, I’d give him one more chance after the second strike and call it a foul tip. Last chance at bat before we take remedial action.

What America wants is what it has always wanted in fact it’s the glue that has held us together thru thick and thin. What is it, JUSTICE. We live for it, every day it guides our actions and it also by the way is why we won WWII, why we killed each other in our civil war not to mention the war that started it all the Revolutionary war. It’s also why we didn’t do so well in other wars such as Korean Vietnam and now Iraq. Do we want to sweep this mountain of dirt under the rug, I think not we want justice.
