In all the “surveys” I receive from Democratic candidates and organizatios, only Russ Feingold has ever featured restoring Habeas Corpus and/or the Bill of Rights as a priority. As far as I can tell, he is the only one who has consistantly maintained the quaint “pre 9/11″ idea that we don’t have to appease the terrorists by destroying the freedoms for which “they hate us”. There sould be no doubt in any Congressperson’s mind that this is an issue that desperatly needs to be addressed, NOW.

[…] Right now the problem is that the Bush Administration has taken away these rights with the Patriot Act, the Military Conditions Act and the rendition programs and the use of Guantánamo. Prior to those, habeas corpus “has been a revered piller of western legal philosophy and an ethical imperative as a civil right since the Magna Carta.” […]

Just a quibble. Habeas Corpus is the political point, but isn’t the technical issue really violation of the Immunities And Privileges Clause of the 14th Amendment?

I have never figured out the Democratic cowardice about Section 1 of the 14th Amendment. Isn’t contemporary Republicanism fundamentally about anulling it, so it’s necessarily a bankrupt Democrat who goes over to that?

Delurking for first comment. Ortiz and Reyes of Texas contacted in support of restoration of habeus corpus. On advice of staff from Reyes’ office also contacted Doggett of Texas as constituent to request support when bill comes to House floor.

All three are Democrats. My message focused on “do it now” and “let’s skip the strategy and save the constitution.”

Thank you for making this so easy. Having multiple toll free numbers made the process quick and “affordable.”

RevDeb @ 63

UPDATE:

via TalkLeft:

Bump and Update: It looks like it will be a stand-alone bill. A reader just wrote in:
FYI– Congresswoman, Rep. Kathy Castor, (D-FL-11th) who serves on both the Armed Services Comm. AND is the only freshman on the powerful Rules Committee which makes decisions about moving bills forward, met with Armed Services Chair Ike Skelton early this morning and they have decided to file a stand alone bill to restore habeas corpus rather than put it in the Defense Authorization Bill.
I spoke to her Chief of Staff personally, and he said she promises to work to move the bill along, so everyone will have to vote up or down on restoring habeas, and we’ll all know by their vote where exactly everyone in Congress stands on restoring habeas.

yep… this was just confirmed to me by a very nice person in Brady’s office - Skelton has pulled restoration of habeas corpus from the defense appropriations bill. i called Skelton’s office back to confirm/deny and got the run-around (much different response than when i called earlier this morning).

somedays i really hate my party.

and this after i was personally assured by my congressman (the day after his vote for hr1591) that the house dems were just starting the effort to end the iraq occupation and that it would be an issue in the defense appropriations bill coming up. oops, looks like they decided not to do that either. oh, and where is the promised bill on no attack on iran w/o congressional approval.

i don’t think i’d be nearly so pissed off, if they weren’t pretending to do more and better than they are actually willing to do.

i need to go take a walk before i throw my computer across the room.

lee5, Texas Betsy, and do-si-do –

I figured W didn’t need the money since he vetoed the bill. Why bother sending another? If it was such an emergency, he could have signed the “emergency spending bill”, otherwise I’m sure it will wait until next year’s budget :)

nolo @ 137

Nolo @ 70

Thank you for the post. Do you think we are in the midst of a modern day Coup D’etat?

Has anyone compiled a list of Retired Military Generals/Admirals Et Al who oppose the continued occupation in Iraq?

there are three — for certain — to
be featured, in these votevets.org
television spots. . .

Thank you Nolo. Great commercial from votevets.org.

It might be useful for us to track the opposing “moveamericaforward” commercials that that person on the Newshour informed us would be running. I’m going to keep an eye on that organization.

She (I don’t even want to say her name) is NOT military. No credibility (IMHO). If that MAF organization is truly comprised of and funded by military families (not just “some” as stated on their website) then they need a better spokesperson.

Go votevets!
