It seems to me that “traditional” safeguards — such as the unwritten rule that US Attys are not removed during the tenure of an administration — are not enough to prevent this kind of corruption. The principle of DOJ independence from the White House needs to be written into law, or into the Constitution.

Maybe the DOJ needs to report to the legislature instead of to the President. I don’t know, but if there is no law against influence, there will eventually be no wall between DOJ and the White House. Isn’t that pretty obvious once you think about it?

Greetings Firepups,
First time posting…I am enjoying this discussion immensely. I take you all back to the concept of the overall strategy by the neonuts to turn all of the wheels of government in their favor. It has been briefly touched on how important “Black Tuesday” was in the overall plan…to make us afraid, distracted and in need of the government “daddy” figure. Well, as you all know, that veneer is now fading away. I have no desire to turn this discussion into a 9/11 truth thread but all of you, on your own, have touched upon the secret of their madness. The game was executed perfectly until they forgot to secure the internet and cleanse it of non-official story chatter. As you can all see now everything from the PNAC document to the 2000 election to 9/11 to the war on “terra” and on and on has a far simpler explanation than the ones so laboriously dwelled upon. The big boys wanted all of the marbles and they were perfectly willing to lie, cheat, kill and obstruct to have their way. Our country is under siege and there has been a well cloaked coup. There simply is no other explanation for why we all should be fighting tooth and nail now to save it. If patriots were on guard at all levels, regardless of party affiliation, things would not have gotten so dire. We need to act now, act firmly and drive a stake into the hearts of all that subscribe to the mantra of The United States of America as being anything less than free. Impeachment is the tool given us by the founders.

I always thought that “the best and the brightest” ended up being our public servants in our federal government.

But, “The average US News & World Report ranking of the law school attended by new career lawyers plunged from 15 to 65.”

The entire Bush administration is a virulent Hatch Act violation.

I’ve always heard Republicans say that they prefer the private sector over public service because they can make more money in the private sector.

Then, I continue reading that “political appointee” Republicans are being appointed to positions in our federal government to “build their resumes.” For advancement in public service? Hardly.

Thus, the difference between political appointees and career positions, with the Republican political appointees conducting a raid on our democracy for partisan purposes and the career government officials fighting back anyway they can to protect our Constitution and the “rule of law.”

So, what about Lang, the former U.S. Attorney out in California?

Republican political appointee. And although pushed out, she reportedly got a huge cash settlement for her “work” and was rewarded with a cushie job at a highly partisan Washington law firm.

Just as Schlozman will surely be.

This is what the hardcore, neo-con, Christianista Republicans mean when they say they are “building their resume” in public service.

And corrupting our democracy and all of our democratic institutions in the process. FEMA, DOJ, FDA, ad infinitum, ad nauseum. With the Republicans doing the dirty deed expecting a huge pay-out once they leave their “public service job” for the private sector.

I’m currently reading Chris Hedges’ AMERICAN FASCISTS…. It’s frightening to realize how close our beloved America is to being seized and irredeemably transformed by these Proto-Fascists…from a Democracy into an authoritarian Orwellian/Rovian state. The endgame of this conspiracy is still to be decided….I’m frightened for my country.

Maybe *over the top*, but made a point that I, as a new and not very thorough reader have missed while trying to climb the FDL landslide to try to get to the top. (OK, I confess, sometimes I parachute to the top & boogie board down.) The point being that not only were appointments fixed around slavish loyalty, but that structurally, it was set up for even more massive purges to come. but christy’s last few posts in this
thread deserve very close attention.

to wit — it may be several years into
the “new” administration before
most of these goodling/sampson career
on to easier (less intellectually rigorous)
jobs, in the private-sector. by “documented
out“, i mean that sound cause must be established
in order to remove them from their civil service
jobs — it is akin to a property right,
that cannot be taken without notice and
an opportunity to be heard — in short,
they have jobs until it is established they

one thing that has become clear from the USA scandal is that rove’s famous “math” from the mid-terms was probably correct in mathematical terms. That rove didn’t count some significant number of registered democrats because he was counting on them being disenfranchised from voting was not evident at the time.

I mentioned this over at TPMuckraker, too, so if you’re experiencing a deja vu moment, that’s it…

One thing that’s been bothering me about the coverage of this is that I don’t see enough distinction being made between *career* positions and “political” positions. I think a lot of people are figuring that these new hires will be gone when the Bush administration is. No. When an article talks about political litmus tests for “career” positions, they’re talking about people who *stay* after an administration leaves.

I know most of the people here understand that, but I don’t think John and Jane Public do, and I wish reporters would go to greater lengths to make sure that the difference is noted.
