Maybe the DOJ needs to report to the legislature instead of to the President. I don’t know, but if there is no law against influence, there will eventually be no wall between DOJ and the White House. Isn’t that pretty obvious once you think about it?

I’ve always heard Republicans say that they prefer the private sector over public service because they can make more money in the private sector.

Then, I continue reading that “political appointee” Republicans are being appointed to positions in our federal government to “build their resumes.” For advancement in public service? Hardly.

Thus, the difference between political appointees and career positions, with the Republican political appointees conducting a raid on our democracy for partisan purposes and the career government officials fighting back anyway they can to protect our Constitution and the “rule of law.”

So, what about Lang, the former U.S. Attorney out in California?

Republican political appointee. And although pushed out, she reportedly got a huge cash settlement for her “work” and was rewarded with a cushie job at a highly partisan Washington law firm.

Maybe *over the top*, but made a point that I, as a new and not very thorough reader have missed while trying to climb the FDL landslide to try to get to the top. (OK, I confess, sometimes I parachute to the top & boogie board down.) The point being that not only were appointments fixed around slavish loyalty, but that structurally, it was set up for even more massive purges to come. And that AG AGKHHHHAAAARRRRRGGGHHK has clearly been lying again.

One thing that’s been bothering me about the coverage of this is that I don’t see enough distinction being made between *career* positions and “political” positions. I think a lot of people are figuring that these new hires will be gone when the Bush administration is. No. When an article talks about political litmus tests for “career” positions, they’re talking about people who *stay* after an administration leaves.

I know most of the people here understand that, but I don’t think John and Jane Public do, and I wish reporters would go to greater lengths to make sure that the difference is noted.
