for the week ending 5/5/07:
[Dim houselights, cue intro music]
Chris Matthews: Hello, and welcome to "The Candidating Game," where one lucky guy at the end of this evening will get to take Lady Liberty on the chaperoned date of her dreams! But enough of this tomfoolery, let's meet today's contestants!
[cue incidental music]
No stranger to this game, Candidate #1 was dating even while he was still married! Tough on crime, and even tougher on dresses, let's meet Rudy! [audience applause as the candidate enters.]
Candidate #2 was a "maverick" before Ford Motor Co. and Tom Cruise made mavericks cool! Whether he's strolling through a Baghdad market or the mean streets of Tempe, you'll always feel safe with John! Give him a hand! [audience applause]
With his Hollywood good looks and abiding interest in . . . well, we're not entirely sure, but that doesn't matter because Candidate #3 is just so darned handsome! And he looks really good in flipflops! Welcome, Mitt! The boys will get settled in, and we'll be back after this station identification break. [audience applause, commercial]
Chris Matthews: Candidate #1, while you were Mayor of New York City, you had to deal with the biggest national tragedy ever. If I were a grieving 9/11 widow and you had to console me, what would you say?
Rudy: I HATE abortion! Crime went down on my watch! Ferrets are dirty, dirty creatures and you need to seek psychological help for your obsession! Yeah, a woman should be able to choose whether or not to terminate her pregnancy. Or not. Whatever Scalia says.
Chris Matthews: Candidate #2, some people say that if you're elected, you'll be the oldest sitting President this country has ever had. If I were a widow with an infant son who just learned her husband was killed in Baghdad, how would you console me?
John: I'd follow you TO THE GATES OF HELL!!!
Chris Matthews: Um, that's it?
John: THE GATES OF HELL, DAMMIT! Oh, and I had red jello today. [McCain grins awkwardly]
Chris Matthews: Okay! Candidate #3, if I told you you had a beautiful body, would you hold it against me? HAH! I kid. If I were a quadriplegic and as President, you just vetoed stem cell research legislation, how would you console me?
Mitt: I was pro-choice until I learned the truth about cloning. Now I'm pro-life. I want to apologize to all the fundamentalist voters for acceding to my constituency in Massachusetts who wanted pro-choice legislation. Osama bin Laden will pay and he will DIE! You can't be President if you're an atheist.
Chris Matthews: Well, we're out of time. We'll see which one of these spectacularly virile candidates will get lucky with Lady Liberty after this commercial break!

Hi Watertiger!
Booo!
Hola, lolo!
Like the little sunburst thingy!
The” red jello” just about had me spewing coffee.
They call watertiger “La Divina” for a reason. Brava.

As predicted there are literally chants of “Sarko, Sarko” over at Little Green Fascists.
How low have the Republicans sunk when the results of a French election give them a small moral boost.

I don’t know much about Mitt Romney, but I love his Aqua Velva commercials.
Someone near the end of comments last thread wanted a link to the AUSAs – here is what i found:
http://www.tomflocco.com/fs/UsAttDeathsFirings.htm
Washington—April 25, 2007—Tom Flocco.com—Senate Judiciary Committee Democrats failed to question Attorney General Alberto Gonzales about five Texas assistant U.S. attorneys—two of whom were found dead and three fired within a space of 90 days during 2004— while they were prosecuting the same Medicare fraud and money laundering case with Kansas City U.S. attorney Todd P. Graves who announced his resignation on March 10, 2006 under pressure from the Justice Department.
Reminiscent of the notorious but overlooked Clinton administration “body count” statistics, Thelma Quince Colbert, head of the Fort Worth Justice Department (DOJ) civil litigation unit prosecuting companies defrauding government funded programs like Medicare, reportedly drowned in her swimming pool on July 20, 2004; and less than two months later Shannon Ross, criminal chief of the adjacent Dallas DOJ office was found dead in her home on September 13, 2004 after signing subpoenas seeking evidence in the Texas-based Novation LLC Medicare fraud case involving several other medical supply companies.
35 days later on October 18, 2004 Gonzales fired three white collar crime prosecuting assistant U.S. attorneys in then-deceased Thelma Colbert’s Fort Worth office—Leonard Senerote, Michael Uhl and Michael Snipes, raising serious questions as to why Senate Democrats failed to interrogate Gonzales regarding the curious decimation of the DOJ’s Dallas-Fort Worth corporate fraud unit resulting from two deaths and three firings within three months, all linked to the same money laundering case.

Seriously, why is it that the self-appointed “civility” police, who are always talking about how crude and vile the left are (Malkin and Juggs) are the ones getting their videos banned? I’m sure they think it’s just the Librul Media infringing their right to free speech but they’re being all too kind to themselves.

ooh and I see someone has posted my other fave from watertiger this week
The Candidating Game rocks! Ultra snark.
Kathryn @ 12:13,
OMG….I did not know this. What happened to the investigation?
watertiger @ 17
OH! The HUMANITY!
Kathryn in MA,
Only women have to overcome that particular handicap. I read with some interest Digby’s post the other day about Ashlee Banfield. Digby, one who’s barometer is so acute placed demerits to Banfield initially. Ms. Banfields integrity and professionalism carried the day, and Digby wrote a swell post about her.
I missed the 411 about videos of Maulkkin and Juggs getting yanked.
Maybe I could have phrased that better.
cbl @ 21
LOVE that.
Jane,
mebbe if they stopped calling for the assassinations and internment of brown people, they’d find a wider audience.
NOT!
According to Josh Marshall at TPM, there’s now a right wing version of YouTube. Fine. They’re rude, crude and socially unacceptable. Let them go play in their quiet little corner of the internets, ignored by rational people everywhere.
I love that photo of Lizzy. She wore that expression almost the entire time she spent with Cheney.

But MSNBC spokesman Jeremy Gaines said a Giuliani campaign representative had called NBC News to complain about Olbermann being part of the debate telecast following his commentary.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/200…..s_role_3??
NEW YORK – In an angry commentary on April 25, MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann accused Rudolph Giuliani of using the language of
Osama bin Laden with “the same chilling nonchalance of the madman” to argue that Republicans would keep Americans safer than Democrats from terror.
Eight days later, Olbermann hosted MSNBC’s coverage of the first debate among Republican candidates for president.
snip
Unlike the Democrats who have made a point of standing up to Fox, there’s been little public protest among Republicans about MSNBC’s use of Olbermann at news events. That doesn’t mean it has gone unnoticed. Graham said there’s a real debate among conservatives over how to deal with him: should he be ignored or loudly criticized, knowing how effectively Olbermann has turned Bill O’Reilly’s attacks into a badge of honor?
The Giuliani campaign would not publicly discuss what it thinks about Olbermann, or whether it had made those feelings known to NBC, a spokeswoman said.

Woke Friday morning to NPR’s interview with Brownback. Jesus Christ on a pogo stick, that dude is twisted. Mother Teresa, he kept invoking. You know damn well he hates to credit Mother Teresa. A fundy pandering for the Catholic vote.
If it came down to brass tacks (Dog help us if they get that far), the Fundys and the Catholics would have their own holy war against each other.

I call it “quarantined to the wingnut ghetto.” I have no problem with Ole 60 Grit and Malkin screeching to their pasty faced, mulleted, illiterate audience on their own turf. They should not, however, be able to have their eliminationist rhetoric “mainstreamed” and presented to an average audience like it was either sane or rational. Discharged gay sailor is called back to active duty
{snip}
On his wedding night in July 2004, then-Petty Officer 3rd Class Jason Knight finally accepted a truth he had fought against for years: he was gay.
Almost immediately, he moved to get his marriage annulled. He apologized to the woman he’d married. And when it came time to explain his changing circumstances to the Navy, he left nothing out. Under the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, he was quickly discharged from the service.
But now — whether through a clerical oversight or what some claim is an unwritten change in policy to keep more gay servicemembers in the ranks at a time of war — Jason Knight is back on active duty.
Nicely done, Watertiger. The red jello smackdown was especially money.

Don’t see how you can bash someone on the genes they have inherited; re Romney’s nice looks. Its hard sometimes to be good looking. Sometimes, others don’t think attractive people have much of an IQ. Also, sometimes others gang up bc of their own insecurities.
Im not out to elect a pug., however, being attractive doesn’t mean there has been no suffering.

left you a response about France in EPU on last thread.
Christy
Hope you didn’t feel my q. abt Comey at 155 last thread was part of the general tinfoil hattery.
Also – this shd perhaps have gone on the previous thread (but wd now be EPUd) – maybe one thing people need to do is to start ‘disaggregating’ the scandals – stop looking for one underlying narrative and talk about,(as separate scandals) say,
1.the Lam-sacking scandal
2. The Iglesias Domenici Madrid scandal
3. The Mackay scandal (?s)
4. The indian assets scandal.
etc etc
I can see that from the point of view of figuring out what’s going on, people like emptywheel and Josh Marshall need to try to integrate evrything in a big picture – and one thing the blogs are doing well is collaborative investigative reporting, analysis and synthesis.
But to treat it all as one scandal – eg by referring to it generically as Attorneygate – might also make it easier to dismiss/ignore/minimize.
Trying to find ways to ’sell’ each scandal as a more or less self contained entity might also be a good way to cut into the business of the tin-foil haberdashers…
I’m supposedly spring-cleaning my bedroom. At this rate it won’t be done till Bush leaves office.

Hmmm…coming from an entertainment background, it was a combination of two things…turning the “news divisions” over to the “entertainment divisions” and the desire of Rupert Murdoch and other media bigs to be able to own more and more media outlets.
The death of the fairness doctrine and the problem of turning over news divisions to entertainment people and expecting them to generate entertainment revenues reaped obvious results. But when you see Fox News devoted to eternal Republican hegemony it’s not because Murdoch hates gays, it’s because he has one goal and one goal only — to expand his empire. His sole objective is deregulation and content up and down the pipeline gets subtly (and not-so-subtly) massaged to suppport those who make that happen. And yes, it really is that simple.
Time Warner, Disney, and other media outlets are in the same boat. Endless consolidation also leaves us with fewer voices. It’s an intrinsically conservative business model that lives in great harmony with conservative political policy (and whenever I hear about “liberal Hollywood” I have to laugh — to think that Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon have the kind of influence that Murdoch has is a true hoot.)
Media people don’t like being beaten up by wingnut bullies and they don’t like being called “liberals.” But that’s probably a lesser influence than the corporate one.
Speaking of NBC, seen the Fruitcake Lady Remembered?

Milan River @ 50
You are quite right – the comment was very shallow of me.
Bill 58, That was what I was trying to say in the last thread about a chart that would show “each” scandal and how they are interconnected. That way one “big” scandal cannot be dissed or ignored. If it is based on facts, it is not tinfoil. If something is deemed tinfoil because one is afraid of facing it, the mere mention of anything improper is immediately suspect and dismissed instead of being dealt with properly under the rule of the law.

LOL!! Yup, me too. and gardening. Next, iron somethng to wear tomorrow.
I wrote a piece about media consolidation the other day. In the last twenty years the number of major media companies went from around 80 to six. The result is division heads were responsible for bottom line figures and news departments became profit centers. To appeal to more people the birth of “infotainment” was the result.
I have not yet looked into the fairness doctrine. It’s on my “to do” list.
Alfred Kelgarries @ 68

I don’t think a list is what’s needed(although I started to do just that; and no disrrespect to Hugh).
I think that rather than always talking about one big scandal, people should make an effort to talk about them as a lots of little scandals. (except that none of them are really little, except in comparison to the whole mess..)
That’s to say: there ought to be enough in the Lam story alo ne to make a big deal out of. Similarly McKay. Similalry Iglesias.

Well, you weren’t entirely wrong, Brownback was an evangelical, I believe, before he converted. And he seems to deliberately muddy the waters by dropping the lingo of both camps.
No doubt he figures he’s building bridges or whatever — or hell, he’s got two hands, he might as well pick two pockets at the same time.
Obviously there are more than a few marginal (in terms of money, viability, and rhetoric) wingnuts in this group aside from Brownback. Tancredo and Hunter are sidesplittingly goofy, more so that they bother to stay in. They’re comically bad on an Alan Keyes level.
But Brownback strikes me as one of those guys who might just hang around long enough to make the eventual nominee look moderate, thus legitimizing unsuitable thugs like Giuliani or McCain.
As far as I can tell, only Romney strikes me as not completely dangerous in terms of policy and rhetoric (though he is clearly in over his head). Huckabee seemed like a decent enough egg on The Daily Show a few weeks back, but he doesn’t separate his pro-life beliefs enough from what his policy would be on issues of choice.
And while I understand that Huckabee is an ordained minister, it’s hard to get around the “I don’t believe in evolution” part. I don’t want to be an intellectual thug, but I also don’t want someone who doesn’t believe in gravity to run the country either (too late for that, I guess).
