"Party Planner" does not appear to be a promising addition to the already bizarrely convoluted resume of Jimmy Gukert aka Jeff Gannon, former male escort turned faux-journalistic White House shill (hey, he already had the kneepads!) turned…what, exactly? His "Bible Reading Marathon", held yesterday in honor of this year's National Day o' Prayer was not exactly a standing-room-only event:
Dozens of Heads Were Bowed
By Dana MilbankFriday, May 4, 2007; Page A02
Let us pray.
Let us pray that, on next year's National Day of Prayer, there is better attendance at the "Bible Reading Marathon" on the West Front of the Capitol.
Organizers put out 600 folding chairs on the lawn — the spot where presidents are inaugurated — and set up a huge stage with powerful amplifiers. But at 9:30 a.m. yesterday, not one of the 600 seats was occupied. By 11 a.m., as a woman read a passage from Revelations, attendance had grown — to four people. Finally, at 1 p.m., 37 of the 600 seats were occupied, though many of those people were tourists eating lunch.
Where was everybody?
Hm. I dunno. Maybe we just missed Teh Rapture and they've all gone to Heaven without us.
So, who planned this thing?
"This isn't that kind of event," explained Jeff Gannon, spokesman for the host, the International Bible Reading Association. Gannon, actually a pseudonym for James Guckert, had earned fame in 2005 representing a conservative Web site at White House briefings until it was revealed that he posted nude pictures of himself on the Web to offer his services as a $200-an-hour gay escort.
Let us pray for the power to understand how Gannon made his way from HotMilitaryStud.com to the International Bible Reading Association.
Oh, dear God, no. Let's not and say we did, please? I had gob-smacking irony for lunch.
I just have to quote Gavin here, "Satire leaves a tear-streaked note reading, 'No funeral.'"

Morning.
TRex, is it fun to be a writer when your subjects give you so much wacky material?
Nat’l Day of Prayer? And we call the Muslims fanatics.
Who can forget the Atheist Dial-A-Prayer?
You call up and no one answers.
You.Can.Not.Make.This.Stuff.Up
Morning TRex. I am struck all of a heap.
Oh, man. Did you have to pause every few sentence to breathe, TRex? Damn, that’s some life-threatening irony!
I can just see Dana Milbank trying to control the convulsive bursts of guffawing as he sat typing away at his keyboard. That shit damned near killed me, I was laughing so hard.
–I THINK ONE OF THE GREAT MYSTERIES IS — HOW MR. GANNON MANAGES TO STAY ALIVE — FOLLOWING THE REVELATIONS OF VISITS TO THE WHITE HOUSE. TALK ABOUT CONTROLLING THE MESSAGE. MY GOD, ROVE HAS MORE POWER THAN GOD DOES? // snark, PLEASE ALLOW THE CAPS.
I first read this as “Dozens of Heads Were Bobbing”, and considering who led the event, it wouldn’t have surprised me any.
Phoenix Woman @ 8
you savage
Is this from the Left Behind Series, Trex?
Well, if they had advertised “massages” I’m sure they would have had a full house.
A purely religious event sponsored on U.S. Gov’t property?
Church IS state, methinketh.
Aside from all the irony inherent in the details.
Hey, kids, I’ve got a dozen things going on at once. I’ll be right there. Talk amongst yourselves. I’ll pick a topic.
The Christian Right. Neither Christian nor right.
Discuss.
Were any FOX reporters there who forgot to file the report, I wonder?
WOW !
(And I am almost never at a loss for words.)

Massages and stroking.
Of EGOs! Get your MINDS out of the gutter folks. You’ll be running into too many Republics down there.

Either that, or the Left in Your Behind series of Porn Again Productions by Betty Bowers.
Proof that it only takes a few Christo-fascist to ruin it for most in America…
Maybe we just missed Teh Rapture and they’ve all gone to Heaven without us.
So there are so few of them that we didn’t even notice? ;)
TRex — I had no idea you did daytime posts. Very nice.
Bless his heart.

He’s an owl who is also awake during the day.
Don’t knock the Guck-man. In another day and age he’d be making a fortune selling patent medicine. He’s a born entrepreneur, and has found a couple of niches to exploit his talents. There are many historical parallels.
When the rapture takes place can I have your car, house and bank account. I have one last kid to get through college.
Any of you who might be near Athens this weekend it is time for the 29th Human Rights Fetsival
Human Rights
come on down.
kathleen @ 25
Who are you asking? Which of us do you expect to be raptured?
ok, so “this isn’t that kind of event”, as in the kind that people are actually expected to attend, but for some reason you set up 600 CHAIRS!!!! i’m sure that whoever footed the bill for the chair rental would have liked to know that they were there just for show.
AAAAAA MEN!
Ah yes..our reps head home for the weekend, while the folks in Iraq that they sentenced to death via their yes on the war resolution in 2002, are murdered in the thousands, and 4 million are displaced.
Our country is drowning in the Iraqi peoples blood, but few have noticed.
I don’t know how they sleep at night!
Trex
This would keep me awake in the daylight also.

Can’t wait to see Milbank try to talk to KO about this tonight!
actually, the whole event was sponsored by the folks across the street, thanking God they were atheists.
I’ll try to comment once/if I can stop laughing.
Texas Betsy @ 27
I guess only those folks expect to be on the rapture cloud would know. I don’t think I made the list!
Apparently, the Republican Right has absolutely no sense of irony or shame.
I hope Keith asks Dana to say a few words about this tonight!
TRex, what you doing posting in the broad daylight?
kathleen @ 30
They get massages …
Peterr @ 34
MUST SEE TV. I hope C&L gets the video.
Just before anyone gets raptured, offthread there is an election in france coming up. The european media has been quite trapped into spinning the story from both US and UK perspectives, particularly that the french economy is underperforming against these two international giants.
Of course, digging deeper one finds that is not at all the case, and the resulting analysis casts much doubt on the relative strengths of the US and UK models.
One of the authors is Jerome a Paris from dKos, and the article is at European Tribune (and dKos as well.)
Peterr @ 34
This is probably the only coverage you will see, I’m guessing. At least, coverage with the Gannon angle.
It’s really interesting to flip from MSNBC to Fox sometimes to see what Fox is and is not covering. I’d do CNN too, but it’s really about the same thing.
Of all the bizarre to just flat-out unbelievable stories to come out of the Bush years, I don’t think any are weirder than the saga of Gannon/Guckert-and I don’t think we’ve got the whole story yet. How did he get the gig? Who recruited him? Access? Daily passes? WTF? And now this? Please…stop…can’t… take…anymore..

Loo Hoo @ 39
Hey Loo Hoo, I was browsing FDL for insights into last night’s ReaganLoveFest when I saw the King of Late Nite’s post. Nice to see some of you nite owls here as well.
Hey TRex! What are you doing here at this hour? I never get to read your posts on time, always a day after the fact.
I left you a note a few mornings ago, but case you didn’t see it: THANK YOU for highlighting Amy Winehouse. I had just totally not heard of her before, but I’m now a huge fan. I have Valerie on my desk top for easy access.
Texas Betsy @ 33
Does 600 empty seats mean our government doesn’t have a prayer?

Hi Petrocelli!
Petrocelli @ 32
I came here looking for some pertinent info on Scooter’s trial, I’m staying because I feel that you folks are the citizens who’ll rid your country of BushCo$ and certainly make a dent in the Christo-fascist base. Harper is scary on the religious front, and my Quebec Prime Minister is a budding Neocon… When your administration is in prison, and corprate media gets the spanking it deserves, there might be a chance for Canada… A great relief for this separatist!
TRex, I hope your early post doesn’t mean you will be absent tonight … much looking forward to Friday night “Late Nite” & “Late Late Nite”.
Maybe someone at the WH jilted Gannon/Guckert, and he’s calling their bluff. This is the strangest story.
TRex:
Thanks for the best mid-morning coffee break laugh here in San Francisco, where “Left” and “Behind” have altogether different meanings–together and separately.

Honestly, no one outside the progressive blogosphere knows anything about the Gannon story. I personally think it’s explosive, considering the smarmy journalistic ethics involved and of course, the sex angle mixed in with the Republican homophobia. Why doesn’t the msm jump all over this thing? There’s a frikkin’ Secret Service log, fer cryin’ out loud.
Oh, whatamisaying?

Who else would be able to do male porn and then run the prayer ceremony. I’m all for repenting, but this is just plain ridiculous.
OT a little bit – but I hear tell Rudy “reaffirmed” – however tepidly, his pro-choice views at last night’s “Ronniepalooza-’07?” Couldn’t stomach the thought of watching it mahself. Anyway, if he did, I wonder when the Bishop Sheridans and Chaputs of my church are gonna come out and strongly condemn support of Rudy G. for such views – just the way they did when J.F.Kerry was running in ‘04. Shall we all hold our breath . . . or not?

Agreed, Harper is striving to be adopted by PapaBush. He’s playing the Quebec card, like Bush is playing the red state card, manipulating the “base”.
As long as I’m on the manipulation front, Gannon seems to be good at that, manipulated the media, christians and KKKarl…
“Jeff’s playing in both the Houses.”
Is that like a switch-hitter?

Quebecois @ 97
Yep, Harper is pandering to the Quebec separatists to win more seats, then using “Quebec separatists” to win seats out west. The only people who see their hypocrisy seem to be in Ontario, but they’re sick of McGuinty and Layton is losing credibility here. It’s going to be a rough couple of years.
It’s like Tom Tomorrow said several years ago, this administration is so hard to satirize, because no matter how outrageous you are making fun of what they’ve done, chances are you’ll find out they’ve already done worse.
OT, but I had to share this photo from the front page of one of the local papers (the Falls Church News-Press):
Next thing you know, Gannon will show up in Colorado…….as a preacher!
LMAO!
The way he could have gotten 600 people there easily (I think) is to have a few dozen rabbits or puppies in a little temporary enclosure there on the lawn.
People just want to give and accept love.
Imagine all the tourists and staffers who would flock to the puppies or rabbits!
So, maybe they listen all that closely to the Bible reading, but they would be loving and happy, their day would be brighter.
That’s more “Patch Adams” than “Left Behind.” Thank God.
Comments sent to NPR and the ombudsperson at Npr about a program that Neil Conan did with John Bolton this week. It was horrendous!
Listen to the program with Bolton for yourself and then write to NPr about whether this was accurate and fair and balanced news coverage.
To NPR
Neil Conan’s program with John Bolton on May 1 was like listening to the MSM in the run-up to the invasion of Iraq. Neil Conan provided Bolton with 40 minutes to repeat unsubstantiated claims about Iran’s “alleged” may I repeat ‘alleged” nuclear weapons program. This Talk of the Nation program was dis-service to the public’s “right to know’ and to the truth.
When polls report that 70% of Americans now believe that Iran has a nuclear weapons program, News Junkies know that the “cakewalk in Iraq”zealots ability to repeat these unsubstantiated claims in the MSM have been successful. The belief that Iran posesses a nuclear weapons program did not come to be via osmosis. This belief came to be due to programs like Talk of the Nation allowing these unsubstantiated claims to be repeated and go completely unchallenged!
Neil Conan did not challenge John Boltons unsubstantiated claims about Iran once let me repeat NOT ONCE. Deja Vu folks Deja Vu.
To the FDL community
I would like to present an idea to the FDL folks. How about a spot where FDLers can mark and keep track of how many times they hear these unsubstantiated claims about Iran repeated. A PRE-EMPTIVE TALLY ! So that if Bill Moyers does a program in two years about the run up to a pre-emptive military strike on Iran and the MSM’s complicity…we can sadly say ‘we told you so” again!

I wonder if Gannon was being paid for a non-existant event a la Julie Doolittle, who got about $5000 from Jack Abramoff for a party that never occurred and that there is no evidence that she did any work to produce.
At least Gannon got the chairs and the snacks out! Were the kneepads provided? The whips for those into self-flagellation? Were “child care” cages set up to control the disobediant kids who played or cried – disturbing the congregation?
It’s also good to see that the Republicans aren’t actually firing all the gay
prostitutesescorts despite their stating last night that it would be okay to do so.And I wonder if they paid the licensing fee to the International Society of Krsna Conciousness who first came up with the idea of a universal prayer? Is there a standard prayer that was supposed to be prayed?
Can we pray to make the Republican Party go away?

Bad news: That’s not what he actually meant.
Lou Costello @ 114
Hitchins, Bluaghhhh! Here’s a guy who used his vitriol against Islam as a launching pad to cheerlead for Bush in the run-up to the Iraq war. Yes, he says that religion is the cause of everything that is “ill” in the world…while at the same time trying to coerce the left into becoming Neo-Conservatives! I had many of my left-liberal friends actually use Hitchins arguments as the basis for supporting Bush’s invasion. It was amazing that they sacrificed their reasoin for this guys “prestige”.

Don’t get me wrong. I wasn’t standing up for him. I just like the discussion. Like George Carlin on religion.
Cinnamonape@132: Also, Hitchens is anti-choice. He wrote an article in The Nation years ago, arguing that women should go through with all pregnancies and give the babies up for adoption, because it just isn’t that big a deal to go through pregnancy and childbirth. He’s a pig—one of the most smug and self-satisfied people I know of. It was sort of a relief when he went neo-con because then he couldn’t pretend he was any kind of progressive at all.

The same problems that you are going through have to be dealt with: Media, Corporations, politicians… Essentially, power and money. The sad thing is, the Liberals do not have a leader that is liked across Canada, although he is very intelligent. Harper is sowing the same Dobson-style doctrine in Canada and most people are too pre- occupied to notice. He is pandering to every region while turning each one against the other – like the Red State/Blue State game plan, which worked well for Bush.
Please get the word to all your Canadian friends and relatives, not to support Harper.
I talked to a group of people at a Business conference in Western Canada ( I am a meditation teacher who accompanied someone there for a luncheon). When I told them how Canada and Canadians can prosper while caring for the environment and building a bright future for our children, where we respect each other’s rights and freedoms, flash bulbs went off behind their eyes. Hopefully my upcoming book will help this along.
OT ~ I bet Henry Waxman has seen Ray McGovern’s ‘evidence’ on the Niger forgeries and Rice knows it.
Korrupt and Kraven Karl Rove….

oh,yes, that ROCKED. Bolton knows “a different Abraham Lincoln” than she does….
Oddmommy@141: yes, that “no big deal” thing infuriated me. If I remember correctly (& I may not—it was a long time ago), Hitchens also argued that feminists should be anti-abortion because half the pregnancies would have resulted in baby girls. That article was incredibly insulting, and brought a lot of strong response from the women writers at The Nation. He remains anti-choice.

Is there any more pathetic spectacle in the modern world than John McCain?
As I’ve said b4, SO glad Jon Stewart is finally over him.
kathleen @ 163
Boy, I can’t wait to see Whitehouse’s chart for that !!! *g*
More on Ledeen and the Niger forgeries here.
Some interesting stuff.

I think they have had a gathering down on the Statehouse lawn, but again they had representatives from all the religions in Central Ohio (we’ve got a good sized Buddhist contingent).
Petrocelli @ 164
I could not even entertain the thought of watching that debate, and have great respect for you folks who did.
My take on Rudy in general is that, among his many other virtues such as liar, hypocrite, and megalomaniac, he is a pathologically twisted f**k and the most dangerous of the whole freak parade of repub, uh, “candidates.”
oddmommy @ 165
Did you see that show? Watch it from the beginning on Comedy Central. It unmasks McCain so beautifully, it should be seen by everyone.
I think Jon saw McCain as the hopeless patriotic soldier until that “Shopping in Baghdad” debacle.
I did see it indeed, I NEVER miss Jon if I can help it.
oddmommy @ 169
I only caught the last 20 minutes and needed 2 hours of meditation to clear my mind. *g*
I thought
RommelRomney was even scarier and Fred Thompson is scarier still. I’d like to see Edwards and Obama take them on in a true debate.oddmommy @ 171
Stephen’s “Word” commentary should be bought by a Dem candidate and used to skewer the right. It has much more insight and wisdom than most of their talking points.
oddmommy @ 171
BTW, did you see Jon on Bill Moyers?
Hmm, I must have missed something in the McCain interview. All I had seen was Jon losing control of the interview and getting buried under a mountain of McCain’s fresh-spewed bullshit.
As for JimmyJeff, maybe this is his way of saying “Bitch! I don’t care how many girls you had working under you. I am the official White House whore, and don’t you forget it! And that goes double for you, you little Dirty Sanchez!”
Of course, when nobody paid attention, he flounced off angrily. Last anybody knows, he locked himself in a bathroom stall and won’t come out.
Petrocelli @ 174
nope….wanted to, but I missed it.
oddmommy @ 176
Jon Stewart on Bill Moyers Journal
Lou Costello @ 177
thank you!
oddmommy @ 178
No problem oddmommy. Watch Jon’s previous interview from 7/11/03. You can see the makings of ‘Buying the War”.
Lou Costello @ 177
Thanks for the link. And shame on me for waiting until now to see it.
You know what I’d like to see? Olberman asking the questions in an open debate. Get rid of Tweety Tool Time, he’s water under the bridge.
Openly gay Headline News anchor Thomas Roberts has just been shitcanned by CNN.
Why am I not surprised?
OK! So does Gannon/Guckert still have a White House press pass or is it a prayer pass?
TRex, you missed a bet. You should have used one of the HotMilitaryStud.com photos with this article.
As heard on a recent episode of South Park… maybe Gannon/Guckert is trying to “pray away the gay” .
