I started to put together a timeline of James Comey's tenure at the DoJ only to find out that emptywheel had already done one, so I'll just cop hers. But listening to Comey's testimony yesterday, it was clear that the plan to fire the US attorneys was something they did not involve him in (other than to ask his opinion which they promptly ignored) and that they did not move on until after he was gone:
December 11, 2003: Comey appointed Deputy AG
December 30, 2003: Comey appoints Patrick Fitzgerald Special Counsel on the Plame Affair
February 6, 2004: Comey reiterates Fitzgerald's authority to investigate things–like perjury–that would become relevant in the Plame investigation
March 2004: Comey refuses to reauthorize the NSA domestic spying program
Early 2004: David Ayres (Ashcroft's Chief of Staff) asks Comey for a list of weak USAs. Kevin Ryan is the only now-fired USA on the list.
February 17, 2005: Sampson recommends firing just some, not all, of the USAs
2005, unknown date: Comey provides Sampson his list of weak USAs. Kevin Ryan remains on his list, but none of the other fired USAs are.
March 2, 2005: Sampson sends Harriet Miers a list grading all USAs. Patrick Fitzgerald is graded mediocre. Sampson revises this list after an AG Advisory Committee meeting; he adds two to the firing list, and adds one to the loyal Bushies
August 8, 2005: Boston Globe reports on Black firing, in conjunction with Abramoff scandal
August 15, 2005: Comey's Farewell Address (If you haven't read this, do so now. Really. Otherwise Looseheadprop will be cross with you.)
November 9, 2005: Moschella writes Brent Tolman, then Specter's aide, on inserting AG reauthorization into PATRIOT Act
November 11, 2005: Discussion of reasons to justify AG reauthorization, Moschella forwards to Tolman
December 14, 2005: PATRIOT Act reauthorization comes out of conference
January 9,2006: Sampson provides recommendations on USA firings, listing 7 names, including Ryan
February 7, 2006: Federal Register publishes Gonzales authorization of Sampson/Goodling personnel decisions
February 24, 2006: OLC tells Gonzales his order is unconstitutional
March 1, 2006: Gonzales signs an order putting Sampson andDelilahGoodling in charge of hiring and firing our justice system
March 9, 2006: Bush signs PATRIOT Act reauthorization
It appears the plan was already in the works before Ashcroft left, which indicates that its execution was Abu's responsibility but that its genesis was elsewhere — and it's certainly not outside the realm of possibility that it came from the White House. Did they think Comey would have balked at the plan?
Remember, Bush disliked Comey, who dogged him pretty much from the day he took office:
Miffed that Comey, a straitlaced, by-the-book former U.S. attorney from New York, was not a “team player” on this and other issues, President George W. Bush dubbed him with a derisive nickname, “Cuomo,” after Mario Cuomo, the New York governor who vacillated over running for president in the 1980s.
They must not have been paying attention when Comey testified during his confirmation hearings:
I don't care about politics. I don't care about expediency. I care about doing the right thing.
I guess they're just so used to churning bs they couldn't imagine someone might actually say something like that under oath and really mean it.

Rocks!
Sweet Jane !!!! I think the servers were down for a minute.
Always great to hear your “voice”… Love you, Jane.
Sampson and Delilah – I like it.
Marcy has been off in the weeds all day, but is on a roll now…
http://thenexthurrah.typepad.c…..t-68518740
Check out the part where the commenters are instigating a collection to send Marcy to DC. (ok – I was one)
AP – A new Pentagon survey of troops in Iraq found that only 40 percent of Marines and 55 percent of Army soldiers would report a member of their unit for killing or wounding an innocent civilian.
Hi Jane. You’re on a roll today!
Why do you think that Elston speaking to Cummins, would use the exact same phrasing that Comey used in his testimony yesterday, when he was talking about the 2 USAs he had a hand in firing before all of this came about? I don’t have it here in front of me, but it was something like, if you knew what I knew about them, you would realize they have to go. Do you think that is just coincidence, or wording coming from above…
GSD – still around? My reply to your query re the newest FBI legislative busts in Alaska got eaten when my computer froze. Here it is:
GSD @ 55
She’s working out. Palin has been in the headlines for days, fighting the major oil companies over how to proceed on developing a gas pipeline from the north slope to market(s). Here’s a picture of her unveiling the new Alaska quarter of a grizzly bear – wearing go-go boots. Sarah, not the bear.
Re the latest on
The Corrupt Bastards Clubour legislature, I’m not about to comment yet, because of this:The indictment says Kott asked executives of the unnamed company money and asked for a job after he left the Legislature. Weyhrauch, an attorney, asked for a job and legal work, the indictment says.
On about Sept. 26, 2005, the indictment says, Kott called an unnamed company vice president and said, “I need a job.”
The vice-present replied, “You’ve got a job, get us a pipeline,” the indictment says.
In another conversation later on the same day, Kott told the same executive, “I just want to be the warden in Barbados,” the indictment says. The unnamed company was building a private prison in Barbados.
I had close ties to and was an early investor in the earlier incarnation of the company partnering with Veco on the Barbados private prison proposal. I’m not at all surprised, but I’m afraid that as this shakes out, a couple of former friends and co-workers may be seeing indictments.
I’m glad to see things moving again, though. The GJ had been moribund since last fall.
Our colleague from Iraq didn’t show up to read his paper at our surgical conference today and nobody knows why or has heard from him.
Another possible casualty of the vanity war. Every congenital surgeon they lose means the deaths of 300 kids a year as well. Do they figure into the statistics?
I blame Joe Lieberman.
Jane & Her Hounds of Freedom – The Poodles!!!
Marcy has done a bang up job as usual. Goodling must have known she crossed the line if she spent 45 minutes crying in Margolis’ office. I hope she likes the fact that it is now public. The buses are rolling over her and if she don’t want to be the scapegoat she needs to sing loudly and in public.
Is there a secret book of Bush NickNames out there? The psyche choice behind differnt names would be interesting to analyze. TurdBlossom and Fredo for example is there a link between a bad name and loyal Bushie status? Is being named Cumo after a Democrat the kiss of death? Does Bush have NickNames for the Democrat and Republican Presidential Candidates yet? Are Secret nicknames a skull and bones thing.

There is some amazing evidence presented.
Definitely on a roll– Thank you Jane!!! (Thank you Mr. Comey, as well!)

So hard to assess the real damage of any war, but every 22 months the ability of computers doubles in respect to the capacity to create comprehensive models of the ripple effects of this
negligencewar crime. Add in the international blogs and traditional reporting, and we might probably be able to calculate the damage well into the trillions of dollars and scores of millions of lives. I hope your colleague is OK!Oh, yeah – I hate this goddam, fucking war!!!

Comey timeline update:
As I remember the testimony yesterday, Comey’s “15-minute” conversation with Sampson about under-performing USAttorneys took place a couple of weeks before Sampson’s March 2, 2005 list (so about mid-February, 2005). Sampson asked Comey about this in a vacuum, using very similar words to those used by David Ayres the year before in his conversation with Comey. It didn’t appear that a written list of any sort was generated by Comey in 2005.
Jane’s comment in the post summarizes this well:
“I will veto any legislation that weakens current federal policies and laws on abortion, or that encourages the destruction of human life at any stage,” he (Bush) wrote.
I guess this is selective. And doesn’t include our soldiers on the front lines and Iraqi babies.

Give Scotland back to the Scots. Give Ireland back to the Irish.
Okk, not via the SNP. I had a friend in Scotland describe his vote for Labour while holding his nose, and thought of you voting for clinton.
Um, haven’t wandered over to TNH yet…but wouldn’t the stoppage/investigation of Goodling be a conflict of interest? I really don’t get the roadblock. Apologies for my continued obtuseness.

I think that the part about Goodling crying is a classic example of burying the lede.
The most intriguing part of the article, to me, was the description of Kyle Sampson’s emails with the WH. I don’t think I’ve heard about these emails before anywhere. Sounds like they could be a smoking gun. Here’s what the article says:
———————————-
Three hours before Goodling visited his fourth-floor office, Margolis told House and Senate investigators that Sampson dropped by to say he had information Margolis needed to know, one congressional aide said.
Margolis recounted that Sampson read his e-mail exchanges with White House aides that showed the decisions on firing the prosecutors were closely coordinated with members of the president’s staff, the aide said.
Stunned Reaction
Margolis recalled that he was stunned to learn the extent of White House involvement in the dismissals, congressional aides said. Margolis testified that preparation for McNulty’s Senate testimony — which took place more than a month before his meetings with Goodling and Sampson — was based on the assumption that the White House only became involved at the end of the firing process, the aide said.

My mother was a Scot. My father a Cherokee. I am a 12 breed.
I attended a luncheon today where judiciary subcommittee chairperson Linda Sanchez talked about the ongoing hearings her committee is holding.
One attendee asked whether she and her staff followed Talking Points Memo and Firedoglake.
Linda elaborated about what a great job the blogs are doing, especially in comparison to the rest of the news media, and said that her staff was following the blogs all the time.
Don’t think that the work that is done here is not critically important.
It seems clear that they were asking Comey just in case he had something negative to say about one of the people they already panned to sack.
Regarding the tragic loss of the Iowa native.

My bold
Oh dear, Egregious. Please keep us posted on the good doctor.
We must remember to look very closely at that which each of these people have been responsible for. We can find very few that do not have a dirt or blood on their hands. I don’t put Comey and Fitz, and a few others in that bag at this time. But time will tell if someone did blow the whistle amongst these USA’s about things they saw and heard from the WH and the DOJ. My question is, did any of these USA’s turn evidence of illegal activity during the first 4 years of their terms? I will be happy to apologize for the following if that is the case:
Or are we looking at self serving republican hacks that spoke up only when someone said something bad about them? I am afraid we all ready know the answer is that most of them are weasels that fall into that category. I hope that I am wrong.
We have come to the point where the “less corrupt” or, “less loyal bushie” is something grand. It is a relative thing that we value such “people” in this time of crisis. I would agree with anyone that says that this is rare, but it is hardly even acceptable on a social or moral basis. It is actually a deeply disturbing image of what we have as an excuse for law. These are people that the bushwa appointed folks. these are karl’s choices. does that mean anything to us this many years on?
I would have to guess that this makes them down right untrustworthy guys and gals with very low moral fiber that had to pass a loyalty test to be nominated the first time. We know one went right to work for the company she was investigating upon firing, and the investigation has been , what, lost? Wonder if we can have the details of your golden shower there lady?
I am sorry, but let’s come on back to earth. Some of these USA’s are the death camp guards of this administration. They ended election matters by ignoring the facts. They have a lot of explaining to do about their actions in the coming months and years. There have been how many indictments for election fraud that we know of? Ask Brad.
These are the people that screwed america by doing it the karl rove way. do they deserve our respect? They have not shown this yet.

Re; the Alaska thing that is starting to break. Somebody needs to take a closer look at the deal with local indigenous Alaskan companies given big contracts, who then sub-contract work out to some really big players. Haliburton etc have their fingers in this pie.
So was Ashcroft forced out to allow Abu G to git er done?
Oklahoma kiddo @ 39
I agree.
I think Comey and I might disagree on a lot of issues, but a Russ Feingold type wasn’t going to get appointed Deputy Attorney General. At least based on what we know now, this guy was truly a single point of failure. If he had not acted as he did, where would we be? It’s hard to overstate his importance in preserving whatever semblance of checks and balances that remains.
FWIW, Jane, maybe it’s worth a comment thread where FDLers could express our appreciation to Comey. Then someone could fax it to wherever he’s working now.
Other possibility is if someone could post his current work fax number, we could all fax him our appreciation individually.
looseheadprop made a great comment on the live blogging thread of his testimony about how tired he looked. My guess is that a lot of people in the GOP were putting pressure on everyone Comey ever knew to not be so forthright in his testimony. Also, my guess is that down the road, a lot of “loyal Bushies” will
lietestify to mitigate their own responsibility that Comey did know and did attend meetings where politicizing DOJ was discussed.Bloomberg Article
Ok, this looks like it works. It worked for me in preview. Loo Hoo or LS please try it out for me. And Thank You.

That’s what the “Link” button is for. Type a short phrase that describes what’s in the link, like “this dynamite expose by emptywheel”. Then highlight that phrase, go to your other tab or window, and copy the URL. Then return to your FDL tab or window to the comment you’re writing, where your phrase should still be highlighted, and click on the “link” button. A new little window will open with the start of an address already written (http://) and probably highlighted in blue. Now paste your link into that space, over the highlighted address prefix, and click OK. Then you’ll get another window which should contain your highlighted phrase; you can either just click OK again, or change the tag, and then click OK. Your phrase should now appear underlined and clickable.

Bay Area sports are on the upswing, hapless Raiders notwhithstanding. 49ers have come a long way in their rebuilding. Giants remain entertaining, amid all the conflicting emotions of Bonds’ presence and achievements.
I don’t follow hockey or the San Jose Sharks. They are definitely a Bay Area team but there’s no innate hockey culture here as in the “real” hockey regions.
