Speaking of Vista –

Because we in our house can foresee the day when the Monster from Redmond will refuse to provide any more support to W2K (thus forcing everyone to “upgrade” whether they want to or not) we’re taking early preemptive action –

Starting to learn Linux (Ubuntu version for now).

And Mr. K8 is going to be gradually introducing Linux into his work computing environment as well.

Take that, MicroPigs!

Go for Ubuntu, folks, and run it on a Mac.

Screw the judge. If I had her money I’d skip the state and move to New York or Miami. There’s plenty of partying to be done in either of those towns. In the meantime she can hire an army of private investigators to find that one dirty little secret the judge has that will end his career. There’s no point in having the money if you can’t use it to fight the jackasses in the black robes who think they’re royalty. I’m with the rich kid on this one. Screw the judge. I’ve never met one I respected, they are the biggest whores in a corrupt legal system.

Actually, that’s the best I’ve ever seen her look!

I think she should take a job cleaning motel rooms instead of living off daddy’s money from owning them.

That’s how I paid for pizzas, clothing, entertainment and various sundries all through high school.

Scrubbing shit out of toilets, pubic hairs out of tubs, washing towels, changing sheets on countless beds and having your hands cramp up until you thought they’d stay that way, builds character.

I’ve often told my students that poverty was my biggest advantage in life………and I meant it!!

Hey, Hilton………you really want to get your shit together, stop shopping and start volunteering for a real charity……….Habitat for Humanity comes to mind, OR call me, I’ll set you straight.

What kind of wonderful karma-laden fuckery is this?!?!

Careful. Too many words like this and this site will end up joining those blocked by the military filters. As it is I can no longer go to DKos while on militar nets - it is blocked with the filter claiming, “personal pages, obscenity, …”. Obscenity. Heh. I try to make sure that I use at least one obscenity a day in normal military conversation (with co-equals or subordinates that I trust lack delicate ears). The military, I guess, is chock full of delicate ears (and eyes).

This come up at all today?

40% Of Troops In Iraq Support Some Torture

I’m a troop (still, though I have totally lost heart and will be quitting soon) and this doesn’t surprise me that much given the lackadaisical treatment that the Law of Armed Conflict (LOAC) has been given wrt Iraq/Afghanistan (how the Geneva Conventions “don’t really apply” to these insurgents, etc…to which I say BULLSHIT! No matter HOW nasty or brutish THEY behave, we NEVER fall in that regard. They are either full-blown POWs entitled to all the protections of the Geneva Accords and Treaty Against Torture and Inhumane Treatment OR they are criminals entitled to the full protections under the criminal justice system - which also includes the Treaty Against Torture and Inhumane Treatment, by the way. Period. End of story.) On the otherhand, I am hoping that a large part of the seeming acceptance of torture is a result of a poorly-worded question about a highly unlikely situation: really, in how many circumstances will you be able to save the life of a fellow soldier by torturing someone? But under the hardships of LONG combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, I can understand how emotion might get the better of troops when asked a stupid question. I hope that the percentage would drop by at least 50% if the question were “properly” constructed…but that is just my hope.

I, for one, would not tolerate ANY abuse, period, beyond that inherent in a violent capture situation. It isn’t police work, it is combat, afterall, but that doesn’t excuse torture under any circumstance…

Good luck. Latest reports have it that Vista is buggy as hell. Even worse than the usual Windows “rush it into production before we debug” offerings.

I installed it and, for windows, I actually like it. Now, that is saying a LOT because I am a hardcore linux user. I ONLY fire up winders for a few games, now and then, when they wont run under linux. I do have a gig of ram and it is a 64-bit athlon (now dual core).
I COULDN’T go to XP in any case and was stuck with winders 2000 so I waited as long as I could and then tried Vista (XP didn’t like, apparently, that I had linux installed on another partition and so refused to even TRY to install and there was NO WAY I was removing my workhorse OS for a toy OS.

In any case, there are differences in UI that take a bit of getting used to: IE lacks many of the buttons/icons on its menu bars so it gets to be challenging at first to figure out how to navigate. The menus in the start menu are different and take a bit of getting used to.
Other than that, I’m pleased with it AND unlike with winders 2000 (so far at least) I haven’t had any problems with viruses (I don’t do email under winders) or popups or spybots, etc. With 2000 if I was on the net for any significant length of time, it was spyware and virus city baby! Updates or no.
