This is how out of the loop I am. I heard this song on the radio the other day and loved it and called my brother, "You've got to hear this song by a band called The Gorillas!"
My (très hip and on-top-of-things) brother said, "TRex, that song is, like, two years old. And it's Gorillaz. No 'The' and a 'z' at the end."
Oh.
"Well, I like it," I said, "The deep-voiced rapper is the best part, the second one that comes in. I think the lead singer has a nice voice, too. He sounds like the guy from Blur."
"It is the guy from Blur."
"I'm sorry, could you be a little more of an insufferable know-it-all about this? Do you want to tell me what studio it was recorded in and what edition of the ProTools they used? Who did the catering?"
That was when he hung up on me.
Lyrics below the fold.
Feel Good, Inc.
City's breaking down on a camel's back.
They just have to go 'cos they don’t know when
Now all you fill the streets, it's appealing to see.
You won't get out the county, 'cuz you're bad and free.
You've got a new horizon, its ephemeral style,
A melancholy town where we never smile.
And all I wanna hear is the message beep.
My dreams, they come akiss'n cause I don’t get sleep, no…
*BEEP*
Windmill, windmill for the land
learn forever hand in hand
Take it all in on your stride
It is sticking falling down…
Love forever, Love is free
Let's turn forever you and me
Windmill, windmill for the land
Is everybody in?
Laughing gas these hazmats, fast cats,
Lining them up like ass cracks,
Ladies ponies at the track
it's my chocolate attack.
Shit, I'm stepping in heart of this here
Care Bear bumpin' in the heart of this here
Watch me as I gravitate
hahahahahaa.Yo, we go ghost town,
this Motown,
with your sound
you in the place
gonna bite the dust
can't fight with us
with yo sound
you kill the INC.
so don’t stop, get it, get it
until you're cheddar header.
Watch the way I navigate
hahahahahahaa!
Shake it, Shake it, Shop with it
Feel good
Shake it, Shake it, Shop with it
Feel good
Shake it, Shake it, Shop with it
Feel good
Shake it, Shake it, Shop with it
Feel good
Windmill, windmill for the land
learn forever hand in hand
Take it all in on your stride
It is sticking falling down…
Love forever Love is free
let's turn forever you and me
Windmill, windmill for the land
Is everybody in?
Dont stop, get it, get it,
We are your captains in it. Steady,
Watch me navigate,
Ahahahahahhaa (2x)
Feel good
Shake it, Shake it, Shop with it!(4x)
Ahahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa…

I missed the MSNBC/Isikoff piece ’til now:
Gorillaz – Kids with Guns
I enjoyed that Trex :-)
lolo @ 3
NO! It MODS …see my EPU’d post for an explanation!
Gorillaz FTW.
Meanwhile, on the climate change front (the UN report agmt now in progress), shrub’s also asserting American global leadership:
from AP, bracketed commentary mine:
“The U.S. remained quiet on most issues at the meeting, but some delegates said it appeared to be content letting China take the lead [on obstructionism]. However, the U.S. delegation was vocal over the role nuclear power could play in efforts to reduce greenhouse gases [shrub wants more boom toys to play with].”
…OK.. shrub policy on climate change progress: say nothing, let the Chinese undermine it.
can I get a shout-out for the

You can have your shout-out if I can get a “Quack!” for the Anaheim Ducks, who also advanced to the next round of the playoffs tonight.
a volcanic “Quack”, uhh, to ya
punaise @ 16
Who do the Warriors play next? The winner of Houston vs. Utah? If so, I have to root against them — there are Duke guys on both the Rockets and the Jazz.
punaise @ 25
All righty then, “Go Warriors.”
The Warriors had the largest crowd ever to see a basketball game in California last week. Of course, that was before one of the ramps to the Bay Bridge collapsed over the weekend. Not so easy to get there from SF these days.
gorillaz is cool.
i saw a mashup somewhere of the gorillaz vs. the monkees. apropos.
meanwhile, over at skippy, we have a funny video from comedienne mandy steckelberg channeling laura bush singing liberal’s just another word…

You guys, how did I miss this band entirely? I’m trying to remember what I was doing in 2005.
Oh. Drugs. No wonder.
Well, drugs for the first half of the year, withdrawals and detox for the second.
TRex!!!, It reminded me of a fusion of Rick James and Tone-Loc, ‘Super Freaky’ meets ‘Funky Cold Medina!!! OT, I understand the context of EPU, but not sure: Empty Post Upstairs??? Que?
OMG Trex I love that song and I love the video. The windmill and the sky are bitchen. Looks like a dream or a past nightmare and I gotta tell you that sounds exactly like my laugh! Great graphics too. Thanks for sharing.

btw, TRex the Late nite #1 was fabulous…you have been a super star this week! (as always)
No. They were prescription painkillers and diazempams. I was a very unhappy dinosaur.
TRex, did you see the amateur Wanna Get Away commercial that won the Southwest contest? Pretty funny.

Lawmakers wants VA to explain bonuses
By HOPE YEN, Associated Press Writer Thu May 3, 6:48 PM ET
WASHINGTON – Congressional leaders on Thursday demanded that the Veterans Affairs secretary explain hefty bonuses for senior department officials involved in crafting a budget that came up $1 billion short and jeopardized veterans’ health care.
Rep. Harry Mitchell (news, bio, voting record), chairman of the House Veterans’ Affairs subcommittee on oversight, said he would hold hearings to investigate after The Associated Press reported that budget officials at the Veterans Affairs Department received bonuses ranging up to $33,000.

Gonzales crawls under another microscope
Friday, May 04, 2007
This is how bad things have gotten for Attorney General Alberto Gonzales: His own department is investigating whether one of his former top aides, Monica Goodling, illegally considered party affiliation when hiring career Justice Department prosecutors. Gonzales isn’t twisting slowly in the wind; he’s spinning.
This newest investigation is being conducted by the Justice Department’s own inspector general and its Office of Professional Responsibility, so the White House and Gonzales can’t blame Democratic partisans in Congress for the probe. And the jobs in question aren’t presidential appointments, like those in the U.S. attorney controversy, but career positions, assistant U.S. attorneys, that by law are supposed to be strictly non-partisan.

Iraqi lawmakers consider summer session (AP)
By RAVI NESSMAN, Associated Press Writer Thu May 3, 5:05 PM ET
BAGHDAD – Iraqi lawmakers said Thursday they might consider shortening — or even canceling — their planned two-month summer break to continue working. But they insisted that pressure from Washington is not behind the possible holiday-on-hold.
And besides, they say, the U.S. Congress is not thinking of calling off its own recess because of wartime debate.
The first salvo in the spat came after some U.S. lawmakers complained that it wasn’t right for Iraq’s parliament to close up shop while American troops were fighting. Iraqi legislators — at least those who hadn’t fled the country — were quick to fire back.
“Certainly taking a two-month vacation will have an effect on passing some important laws,” said Mahmoud Othman, a Kurdish lawmaker. “We can stay if we feel that this is very important, but I think that the worries by the congressmen are premature. Moreover, they themselves take vacation.”

What kind?
Hey! My local ABC just aired Edwards commercial! Cool! (Great ad, first time I’ve seen it broadcast.)
Hahahaha on CNN the Republican tool just said that they weren’t saying that they beleived in evolution, they were merely raising their hands to show they had something to say about it! Now that’s a most excellent backtracking talking point
meep! @ 54
Where? Which state?
TB@46, it appears that the ‘Iraqi’ Govt. is getting the message from the floor of the House and Senate, that they need to Act and accomplish something beneficial!!!
oops they weren’t saying they didn’t believe in evolution

We music geeks love doing that to people, it’s not meant to be insulting, we just get a kick out of it ;0)

An Invisible War
by Bob Herbert
Paul Rieckhoff looked across the crowded restaurant, which was not far from Times Square.
“During World War II,” he said, “we could be in this place and there would be a guy sitting at that table who was in the war, or the bartender had been in the war. Everybody you saw would have had a stake in the war. But right now you could walk around New York for blocks and not find anybody who has been in Iraq.
“The president can say we’re a country at war all he wants. We’re not. The military is at war. And the military families are at war. Everybody else is shopping.”
Mr. Rieckhoff is an imposing six-foot-two-inch, 245-pound former infantry officer who joined the military after graduating from Amherst College. When he came home from a harrowing tour in Iraq in 2004, he vowed to do what he could to serve the interests of the men and women who have fought in Iraq and Afghanistan but have never fully gotten the support they deserve from the government or the public at large.
I am so out of touch with music. For 24 years, the only radio I listened to was the one with that peculiar creature known as a “dispatcher” who told “beat officers” where to go. Their voices were usually in the cat screetching range. After 10 hours of driving around in a patrol car listening to them, I became very fond of silence when off duty.
My musical knowledge has suffered greatly.
Texas Betsy @ 61
I wholeheartedly agree with you Ma’am, I was just stating the obvious as displayed by the beltway boyz!!!
Suzanne @ 71
hahaha Suzanna, but that does explain why you’re such a good moderator :-P
Texas Betsy @ 47
Oh, god, please tell me it’s Dubya.

Texas Betsy @ 56 (editted to avoid the margin faerie and thus screwing up twice in one night ::grin::):
You can see it on his website – http://johnedwards.com/media/video/wethepeople
Yeah, I saw it off the net, I just didn’t realise my area would be part of the target audience. I figured it would be more aimed at purple areas. But, thinking about it, parts of the Virginia reception area are red. And the mere fact that it’s being aired in the DC area, where the congresscritters live, will hopefully bring a *tiny* bit more pressure to the folks in Congress.
Oh, god, please tell me it’s Dubya.
Nope, let it be Cheney.
Remember, remove the Dick first.

I said it yesterday, that the first Dem. who hits the airwaves against Bush’s veto will earn the nomination and thus the Presidency. I think Edwards took a huge leap in that direction with this ad.
I’m off everything now except coffee and cigarettes and Advil as needed. I’m happier now that I can ever remember being. July will be two years.

TB, naked guy did not involve the use of certain pharmacalogic brand names that would trip the filter.
It is a spam filter – not censorship.
Trex: You’ve been busy doing ‘other stuff’
You’re lucky to have a brother to talk to about music.
I usually resort to talking with the receptionist about music (who might be 20 – maybe) who keeps me informed at least. Lucky for me he is a DeadHead too otherwise I would only be listening.
Texas Betsy @ 104
LOL Betsy, Suzanne also was hoping that was Dubya and couldn’t wait for the link :-P

I mostly listen to the same music I listened to 20 yrs ago, but more often to political radio or whatever someone else has on.

Hey TRex ( pups), this was the first comment I noticed and all I could think was: Monty Python
I bet with teenagers in the house, you’re hipper than you realize. Since advertising has started to drive so much of our culture, you pick up a lot of things by osmosis, almost against your will.
Man, if I could write one piece of legislation, it would be that public space would be scrubbed entirely of advertising. No more billboards. No more sides of buildings used for signs. Commercial space, sure, you can do whatever you want, but I would just like to wipe the landscape clean of CORPORATE LOGOS. I mean, GOD DAMN. How much more visual noise are we expected to tolerate?

from a letter in today’s NY TIMES:
In “Grim Old Party” (column, April 29), David Brooks lists four reasons for the G.O.P.’s current election problems.
But all four reasons could have been reduced to one question: Do Republicans want their party to be a political party or a religious one?

Oooh! NY Times article:
“Clinton Proposes Vote to Reverse Authorizing War
Hillary Rodham Clinton proposed Thursday that Congress repeal the authority it gave President Bush in 2002 to invade Iraq, injecting presidential politics into the Congressional debate over financing the war.”
(Also, China Makes Arrest in Pet Food Case )
TexasBetsy – Yup, I mostly still listen to my ‘imprint’ music of years gone but there is much new talent out there worth the listen plus talk radio. (My son was griping just today about how I always have the same radio station on in the car)
Sometimes the quiet is nice too.
Lou Costello @ 118
Umm … ugh! I’ll take someone who thinks over someone who struts any day! Strutting goes away a lot faster than thinking does, and usually has more consequences.
Suzanne @ 115
THX suzanne…I actually need those towels. I just got my car washed…with the windows down! *grin
Too late for me. Need to drive all these projects and food and suitcase (and teenagers) to school in 6 hrs. See y’all again tomorrow.
I’m a big fan of quiet. I like music at certain times, but one of the things I love about my house is that it’s on a quiet side street. There’s a Catholic school across the street, so I hear kids playing in the daytime, all ages from kindergarten to junior high, and that’s a pretty bearable sound. Not like traffic or living next to a festering hole full of frat boys like I used to. That was pretty miserable.
But speaking of quiet, it’s time for me to hit the hay.
See you all tomorrow.
Good night!
Great post, Trex.
I am a new fan of Gorrilaz because of their “live in Harlem” concert I keep seeing on my new HDTV (boasting (no not really)) comcast channel lineup.
Awesome show, with guest stars from their albums, great band, the guy from blur playing and singing mostly in shadow in the back, but coming up front to sing at the end.
Really a great show. It’s on dvd, go rent it!
TRex @ 124
Night TRex
I know what you mean about being out of the music loop, TRex. I only just discovered Jeff Buckley (God rest him) last year, and I am now awash in his music. Walked today for an hour at the zoo, listening to the same song (written by his father, Tim Buckley) over and over again. Am now inspired to buy new strings for my guitar–abandoned in its case for nearly two decades–and see if I can get back to plucking (badly) and singing (not so badly).
Good night, TRex. And it’s off to bed for me too — night, all!
CatelynK @ 126
I really like Jeff Buckley, but I only have one of his cds, he died in Memphis being amazingly stupid, such a waste for him to die as young as his father. But it was always kinda cool seeing him around town, hanging out or playing the clubs
RE my post above:
Maybe it isnt on DVD yet.
It’s Gorillaz at the Apollo theater in harlem.
Fantastic live show. in decmber 31, 2006.
TRex, Since I bought my country house almost three years ago with only one electric light in sight at night, only mountains and a river..I drive into town and it’s shocking. small town USA advetizing hits me now like Tokyo used to. It’s all just litter noise, now a days.. who can find the sign they are looking for anyway?
But out here on the Kings river all I hear is water, coyotees, and whatever I put through my klipsch. Screw the rat race, I say…)
Now texas betsy knows why it takes me so long to make it to the post office and send her Vonnegutt books….)

Doc Wendel has a nice rant over at Gilly’s place, including this line:
Hahahah Condi just said it was all right for her to have a discussion with Syria’s FM, but that she didn’t go to Damascus and have pictures and tea……. sheesh IOKIYAR in action!
yea I really like that JoeKC :-) And on that note, I’m off to bed too , night all.
Yum. Gorillaz. One of my favorite experimental bands EVER. I got into them back in 2001, before the first album broke out in the US. I’d taken my second trip over to england and came back with that little gem of a CD in my greedy little paws about 3 months before they hit the US radiowaves.
The change from Dan the Automator to Danger Mouse as producer really shows though, though Albarn’s hands are all over the rest of it.
But adding De La Soul’s(the rappers) evil sounds to this song was utter genius. Downright psycho in a brilliant way. It’s what makes them work. Dark strange and utterly fucking subversive. Much much love for them. ^_^

While you’re at the FAS blog, you might want to check out this article from May 2:

In a move worthy of the Ministry of Information in “Brazil,” the Army regulation has itself been labelled For Official Use Only. They persist in taking satires as operational manuals.

The Onion had the most accurate reporting and analysis of the War in Iraq for at least 2 years.
IMHO, they still have an edge over CNN.
I understand that there are real concerns about the efficacy of national security, and Los Alamos is a case in point.
I will also point to the curious ability to swap Chinese national brand car doors with Toyota Corolla’s (no small engineering frat, an automobile engineer informed me) or the fact that Russian engineered and manufactured mainframe computers were administrated using IBM manuals during the Cold War as examples of why outsourcing national security is not a Good Idea ™.
I don’t know which is scarier:
Outsourcing National Security to Bechel or
effectivly threatening citizens who question details of the policy under FOIA with GITMO.
An example of the quality of outsourced security we can expect at Los Alamos.

I can’t believe you never heard this song before. It was the original soundtrack for the ubiquitous Apple Ipod “skater silouette commercial”
hell, Madonna and (the animated) Gorillaz opened the 2006 Grammy awards with this song.

I TOTALLY agree. I am an observant person by nature (unflinchingly curious person with a penchant for visually-oriented OCD= graphic design person…) and so I’ve had to stop with the television. When I do turn it on, I almost always mute the commercials. The Corpratists have obviously (for a second, third or fourth time…Industrial revolution/Gilded Age) gotten the one up on laws that are on the books and were enabled by a crony-lap-dog-Congress. Rahm (that tool) did say Tamany Hall had nothing on this administration. Well, we’ve got to fix this. Our children are being turned into a bunch of ADD-addled sheep.

Yeah Gorillaz are great. I’m hip with this stuff as I live with a 12 and a half year old. Other people to check out if you’re not familiar is White Stripe – another very intersting group.
