"There is something deranged about you.… The excessive concern you have for ferrets is something you should examine with a therapist.… There is something really, really very sad about you.… This excessive concern with little weasels is a sickness.… You should go consult a psychologist.… Your compulsion about—your excessive concern with it is a sign that there is something wrong in your personality.… You have a sickness, and I know it's hard for you to accept that.… You need help."
– Rudy Giuliani, during his weekly mayoral radio show, to call-in protester
Ah yes, the notorious Season of the Felonious Ferrets. Not since Fiorello LaGuardia and the Great Depression had a mayor of New York City had to grapple with such weighty social issues as weasel possession. Because, in Giuliani's words, owning a ferret is as dangerous as owning a tiger. Or not. Regardless of the relative perniciousness of button-nosed, fuzzy eared pets, this is what he was wasting our tax dollars on.
I raise the ferret issue because it's symptomatic of Giuliani's pinheaded, freakish obsession with micromanagement and the transposition of his personal to the public. (Psychologists: note how rabidly he displaces all his mishegas onto the hapless caller.) Rudy Giuliani has made a career out of his personality, of fighting only those things that get a bug up his ass and coopting the acclaim, even if it's not his due. Look at his performance during the debates tonight, taking credit for the lower crime rate that was actually attributable to former Mayor David Dinkins, inserting Reagan's name in every answer he gave.
Michael Wolff of Vanity Fair writes:
New York magazine, for instance, has been covering Rudy's antics for a generation. The magazine was, itself, subject to a famous blitz of Rudy loopiness: he banned from city buses an ad for the magazine with a tagline saying it was "possibly the only good thing in New York Rudy hasn't taken credit for."
And for some reason that befuddles New Yorkers, "the heartland" keeps excusing this narcisisstic grandstanding.
Again, Vanity Fair's Michael Wolff:
the developing view among tolerant Republicans and receptive independents seems to be that what happened in New York concerning Rudy ought to stay in New York (except for 9/11, which is an officially nationalized experience, and the Disneyfication of Times Square, which plays in the heartland as well).
As if Giuliani is capable of keeping a lid on his egomaniacal hogging of the spotlight? Unpossible!
I suspect that we will, as a nation, not just a city, witness the patented Giuliani implosion sooner rather than later . . . if not at the Republican debates tonight, then maybe in the next Friedman Unit, after I've I donned the ferret costume and spend my days badgering Giuliani's campaign. He's starting to show signs of wear, what with the constant flip-flopping on, inter alia, abortion and immigration, and his affiliation with Big Oil through his Houston-based law firm, Bracewell & Giuliani. If anything, Giuliani is working hard to prove to the country that he's the Weasel King.

That was interesting.
zed?
My brain really hurts.
Congrats Connecticut Bob!
Rudy’s a corporatist, elitist – and a massive hypocrite!
Fair trade for Rudy is a ferret raid.
Does anyone have a count of how many times Guiliani invoked 9/11 tonight?
Hey Pups.
thanks RadioFreeWill!
punaise @ 4
Fur trade?
Connecticut Bob @ 5
A brazillion.
EPU’ed last thread. I just got home. Caught the last four minutes. Was the whole debate this nuts?
Mrsmarks … short answer – yes.
Tweety was the most PATHETIC rube and ridiculous crock of crap moderator EVER.
His questions were not to be believed,,,,,,,,,
It was truly disgusting mrsmarks
Giuliani-Kerik for ‘08! An offer you can’t refuse.
Tweety, the cackling goofy frat boy.
Connecticut Bob
The tradition here is for the first commenter (the zed) to notify the thread below – which I’ve forgotten to do twice – that the new thread is up.
That constant drone over the Reagan library comes from two planes towing old-fashioned banners: “McCain: Mission Accomplished,” and “Republicans: Mission Accomplished.” No groups have taken responsibility.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 15
teeheehee he is such a jerk
EPU’d
For a “replay” of tonight’s GOP laugh fest: LINK
AP – Republican presidential contenders called for persistence in the face of adversity in Iraq Thursday night in the first debate of their campaign, warning that a quick exit could work against U.S. interests. “We should never retreat in the face of terrorism,” said former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani. “Terrible mistake.”
Oklahoma kiddo @ 15
I liked Atrios’ ticket better … Sharpton/Tancredo!! ;-)
Finally, an honorable act attributed to George Tenet.
He claims that he firmly told Clinton not to release Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard despite efforts by Bibi Netanyahu to get Pollard sprung.
Heckuva job George.
-GSD
Oh, please oh please oh please let Rudy be interviewed with Judi…
I hope she’s wearing her tiara.
Like so many ferretphobes, Rudy is just an overcompensating, closeted ferret, himself.
Mrs. Brownback looks confused
watertiger @ 24
She WON’T be wearing a ferret stole.
-GSD
holy crap – if Mr. and Mrs. Brownback traded hair – you couldn’t tell one from the other!
Nice blue tie, Kieth
Rudy, what’s that around your neck?
Abner Luima
Amadou Diallo
Patrick Dorismond
IT’S GIULIANI TIME!
watertiger @ 10
Excellent post WT, I thought FlipFlopper Mitt beat Ghouliani! It was a very reassuring Debate tonite, in that, Whom ever the Dems field, They will Win!!!
A question EPUd from prior thread:
So, is McCain a non-evolutionist, or did he just mis-hear the question and raise his hand in confusion?
radiofreewill @ 16
Yes, I know. I used to “Fitz” every time I was first, but after getting three “Fitzes” in one day a while ago, I kind of stopped. Usually if I’m first on a new thread, I wait until somebody posts something before I comment.
This time I guess I was a little anxious to start talking about the debate! Oh well, ZED!
Other than abortion, they didn’t say a word about women’s issues. Unless you count their disdain for Hillary Clinton.
Nothing about Katrina.
A sentence or two about global warming.
Nothing about the expansion of executive authority until Ron Paul’s closing statement.
Rudy was asked about his relationship to the African-American community and he responded by talking about reducing crime and getting people off welfare.
dakine01 @ 30
THANK YOU!!!
Saint McCain TRIED to smackdown Reid and Pelosi IT WILL COME BACK TO BITE HISS ARZE,
I need a shower and I only watched the pre debate runway walk.
LS @ 35
It cannot be said often enough or hollered loud enough.
The bashing of Bill & Hillary tonight really exemplified the loathing of the conservatives for them.
Or their worry about Hillary’s chances.
Franco @ 36
They shouldn’t insult GRANNY! It’s not nice to fool with mother nature.
I never heard of the ferret thing before where Rudy is concerned. But I remember they were illegal here in Ohio when we first moved here. Always thought the ferret bans were a bit over the top.
On a related note, I always wince a bit when someone refers to a Republican as a “weasel”. Sure, weasels can be ornery critters (I recall that they really liked to play “the biting game”), but they are *much* more loveable than the average Republican candidate or officeholder.
dakine01 @ 30
Amen. see here and here.
Eureka Springs @ 37
You mean this bunch of criminals on perp-walk?
CD @ 31
I think he spent most of his time confused tonight.
WTF? Fineman called him “Popeye”?
Giuliani has nothing to fear but ferret self.
CD @ 32
I was hesitant to pull the trigger on St. McCain, as I noted in the last thread, Brownback, Tancredo, and, Hunter, did raise their hands in response!!!
Is it just me? or did everyone notice how deflated and beaten this crew of candidates looked tonight? Not an ounce of charisma between them. The stink of fear was heavy in the air and no one exhibited any optimism for the future. Did they all think that “talking tough” could make up for the lack of self confidence they all shared? If this was a “who’s the craziest” contest, then it ended in a 10 way tie.
Connecticut Bob @ 39
I’m not conservative, and I am not a Clinton fan.
Connecticut Bob @ 39
Let them bash away – it only makes them look hateful and ugly. It only plays well to the far-right anyway.
steve marvin @ 44
YES! That’s the one!
watertiger @ 44
Shorter McCain: “I yam what I yam!”
Lou Costello @ 43
That’s the one. Pure evil.
Does anyone know what Molly Ivins thought of Ron Paul? I’d guess she respected him, if not more than that.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 48
You are not a Clinton fan, tis true. But you do not loathe her wih every ounce and fiber of your being as these (insert your favorite pejorative here) do.
All the rancid, emptyheaded politics of the last 6 years was on display tonight. Think of a debate. Tonight’s performance was how a debate looks on drugs.
hmmm – how to work the word “fascist” into a snarky nickname for Tommy-Gun-Tancredo?
Connecticut Bob -
Hope all is well. I just wanted to mention that enjoyed your recent video coverage of the JJB dinner!
Oklahoma kiddo @ 47
Of course, that’s fair; I’m not a Hillary fan either.
But my observation was how the Republicans all seemed to focus on the Clintons. I didn’t see the whole debate; did they bash Barack Obama nearly as much?
Let me say once more; I will vote for Senator Clinton if she is the nominee of my party for president.
I imagine it doesn’t seem as “safe” to attack Obama. Better to let your media tools do it.
Franco @ 13
Yep – poor ole torturous Tweety Bird – if he only had a brain larger than his ego.
Maybe we need to review these incidents in their gory detail:
Abner Luima
Amadou Diallo
Patrick Dorismond
So that non-New Yorkers could become familiar with what Giuliani Time really would mean…
Oklahoma kiddo @ 59
So will I but she is not who I would like to be the nominee.
OK. Where’s a poll we can Freep?
ron paul Ron Paul RON PAUL!!!! ; )
Oy, this joker from Romney’s campaign…
Mitt Romney came to sell used cars tonight, buddy.
Vin Weber is on Stupid Scarbourough. Wasn’t he part of that secret Novak group-with some lobbyist They helped Rove spread Valerie Plame’s identity.
So Scarbourgh likes Romney
Hey *xyz! Yeah, things are going great. I’m busy getting my boat ready for sailing season, and am spending a lot of time on the local DTC, trying to break an 18-year Republican stranglehold on the mayor’s office. I can’t wait to start video blogging the Democratic challenger’s campaign when she announces next week!
watertiger @ 65
.. good one!
watertiger @ 3
That’s unpossible!
LS @ 62
When you say “Giuliani Time” it not only hurts me physically, it also lessens my chances of ever finding Jesus.
McCain’s stock has fallen faster than any Black Monday on the stock exchange, he is through!!!
Here’s a couple of quizzes -
one a ‘citizenship test’
Citizenship Quiz
and one to see if you are a yankee or a southerner -
Yankee or Dixie
I think your observation that “Rudy has a Nixon problem — the camera does not love him” was aptly demonstrated tonight, watertiger.
Out of choice, I did not watch the debate tonight.
pwrlght @ 63
ReElect President Gore in 2008 – accept no substitutes.
Jesus, could MSNBC have more fun panning up to the airplane? Yes, we get it – it’s an airplane. It use to be Air Force One.
Boy am I glad I didn’t watch the debate. The comments here were outstanding, though. Bravo/brava to everyone!
hey jane
LS @ 62
Abner Luima – Immigrant sodomized by NYC cops using a plunger in a men’s room at a precinct.
Amadou Diallo – Immigrant shot 41 times by four undercover officers who misstook his wallet for a gun.
Patrick Dorismond – Immigrant father of two shot by undercover cops who apporached him thinking he was a dealer and trying to buy crack. He took offense and they shot him.
Notice a pattern here?
Sangemon @ 71
It feels like “despicable” to me, if that were a feeling – a precursor to Abu Ghraib mind-set. It helped soften the minds of the executioners of those types of acts.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 59
Amen, However, I would prefer to enter the booth without nose plugs!!! I will if she was the Dem nominee!!!
Jane Hamsher @ 73
Jane, that’s so true! But let’s remember how Nixon managed to overcome that. He hired the best ad people.
Coincidentally, I just finished reading “The Selling of the President, 1968″ by Joe McGuiness. It almost seemed…innocent…compared to today’s campaigns.
Jane Hamsher @ 73
As I noted at Eschaton, he always looks like he’s gonna snatch a fly out of the air and eat it.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 75
Life was just too insane in this house this evening to get anywhere near the debate. Dinner is finally in the oven. Everyone’s homework is done. Blue Dragon’s weekend bag for choir competition is finally packed. And I am exhausted.
Missed everything – darn responsibilies – is it true MoveOn flew a couple of planes in the skies above the Reagan Library. My neighbor mentioned it but I don’t know what the plane banners said. Anyone?
Hugh @ 55
What I wonder is, do any of these guys believe their own bull—- (other than Paul)?
dakine01 @ 79
and they’d all need ID cards, according to Ghouliani.
How many times did they say “Jihadist”, “Islamist” and “Fascist” in the same sentence?
Connecticut Bob @ 68
That’s great. I’ve been a regular reader of your blog, MLN, and Spazeboy ever since the heartbreak in November.
You all are continuing to do top-notch work, keeping the pressure on Liebercrats and Republicans alike and building support for true progressive candidates.
Needless to say, I’m looking forward to watching your coverage of the mayoral race…
SteveW @ 47
They haven’t been liberated yet (except for Paul). They still think America wants to war Iraq bigtime.
Hi, Texas Betsy…Ron Paul is the only one who didn’t sound like a goose-stepping fascist.
I didn’t here any questions about oil. Only attack Iran.
Kathryn in MA @ 73
I got 29 out of 30 on the citizenship test but the yankee dixie test just links to the first one.
watertiger @ 84
That would have been sweet!!! A little extra protein!!!
BTW,TexBetsy..tell Snarkassandra they didn’t ask her question, or mine.
Listening to Matthews – He is just an idiot.
RonD @ 96
Not surprised.
Anybody gonna stick a fork in McCain? ‘Cos he’s done.
(Sorry watertiger, I told you nobody would trash your comments section with McCain jokes…)
I still don’t think Tweety was as bad as Brian Williams.
lolo @ 93
How many of them want to attach Iran?
SteveW @ 47
The only time there was any energy out of the lot of them was when Hillary Clinton’s name came up!
pwrlght @ 97
Yea but who did he proclaim the
codmasterwinner.RonD @ 96
Does anyone know if they were asked Jeffrey Feldman’s question about acceptable rates of murder?
1. I think there were many nuggets for the D team to seize on, coming from each candidate. But the pace of questioning was so fast and furious that that our D teamers need to review the tape studiously.
2. I heard a mountain of sound bites. One after another. They do sometimes sound cool….but will fall apart on analysis. Any type of in-depth questioning will shred them.
3. What is a mishega?? Oh hell, I know it’s not barbeque. Whatever.
Ghostman
Jane Hamsher @ 99
Yes but how long before McCain admits it?
Jane Hamsher @ 98
McCain is funny! In a stubby, addled, professionally suicidal kind of way.
Connecticut Bob @ 83
Yeah but that was before Republicans started hiring professional actors to lie to them. They want their bs packaged a bit more slickly these days.
Sangemon @ 89
They just mix it up however they can conveniently connect them;
Fascist-Islamist-Jehadist
Jehadist-Islamist-Fascist, or
Islamist-Fascist-Jehadist, or
and they have NO idea what any of it means. It is all political hate speech terms to terrify citizens. Just empty terms to create a common enemy to inflame and alarm their base. Disgusting.
RonD @ 100
———————————
Williams drones on and on but tweety is a haqck and his obsession with Hillary is pathetic and is a borderline stalker……
Ghostman @ 105
If #3 sounded more like mishuggah it is Yiddish for crazy or foolish person.
Ghostman @ 105
IANJ (I am not Jewish) but I believe mishega is yiddish for crazy. (knowledge based on the old days living outside Boston and listening to Charles Laquidara do the Morning Mishegas on WBCN.
Nah, I’m not old, why do you ask?
watertiger @ 107
I think I heard him off camera say: “Are you my mommy?”
Did Matthews ask a question from the Politico poll? Maybe the one Glenn Greenwald supported?
Is Giuliani’s diatribe against ferrets a sly reference to McCain alone or is it more general and is meant for all the other weasels who are running for the Republican nomination.
Texas Betsy @ 85
I had to catch up with housework after the hearing so I only logged on at the end. I listen while vacuuming etc. so I heard bits. Is it my imagination or is John McCaine scary crazy?
watertiger @ 107
If I were a wingnut it’d be hard to say who I’d hate more for pandering to me…Romney or McCain. On that front, Rudy’s true internal fascism does shine through nicely.
pwrlght @ 106
Well.. they can’t ALL be done can they? I mean, are we resigned to a three way Republican primary race between Romney, Tommy and the Law-and-Order dude? Maybe Macaca’s planning a run? Or Don Imus, now that the rethugs are officially the party of hatred ( White House threatens to veto hate-crimes bill POSTED: 8:56 p.m. EDT, May 3, 2007… stupid question: what does shrub plan to SAY when he vetoes a bill about hate crimes against women and gays.. that he supports the right to hate them?).
They leave it to Scabrough to ask a question about Katrina?
On Giuliani, don’t forget this early warning:
As is recorded in other accounts, when the rally reached City Hall (I must find out whether Mayor Dinkins was in his office at the time), Giuliani grabbed a bullhorn and began shouting a list of Dinkins’s policies, and encouraging the crowd to shout “Bull Shit!” at the end of each one.
Because it happened before the ‘net really took off, it’s not easy to find first-hand accounts on google, but of course they’re all in archives like Lexis-Nexis. Worth some time, when I or someone gets some.
Damn, I got confused there for a minute. At firsat I thought that was Giuliani’s picture up top, but quickly realized it was too cute to be him.
Jane Hamsher @ 99
(((Jane)))!!!
Wow even Scarbourgh thinks attacking Hillary was stale.
I spent the debate time doing accounting tasks. much more rewarding than watching this dreck babble on collectively.
I admit, I’m reassured. Not by the Rambo-wannabes, but by the almost universal, total reliance on fear – fear of Them Following Us Over Here, fear of illegal immigrants, and of course, the fear of the hideous consequences of a Democratic victory.
Whilst most of them were only too happy to either go for indefinite war in Iraq (bonus points for Iran), the people have already spoken.
Thus, their mission, at least for now, seems to be strictly to shore up the crumbling base. This is a good sign. If they can’t take the hint offered in 2006, they can probably be relied upon to ensure they’ll strive to work for the 30%-ers only.
Anybody see any neocons in the White House lately?
All I see are paleocons.
And blackwaters.
I liked it when Mitt declared war on all muslims. As if he has no idea what its like to come from a minority religion that the majority finds suspicious.
A video clip of McCain saying he would follow OBL to the gates of hell followed immediately by that cheeseburger smile he cracked would be golden.
painfully golden.
watertiger @ 84
HaHA! True.
PLovering @ 126
Well, there’s predident Cheeeney, and Hadleeeey, and Condiiii.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 59
But we shall hope it is not necessary.
Anybody else notice the gas prices going insane today? The kids asked me, “Did George Bush do something stupid lately? Is that why?”
Truly, I don’t know. But my jaw dropped to see the price well over $3 a gallon.
Those POLITICO.COM guys were very drudgy. Actually THEY STINK!
I’m so sick of that “follow us home” BS. The smart thing would be to come here while the Guard is overseas. As Richard Clarke said, do these people think terrorists are puppies?
Renee in Ohio @ 131
$3.75 ish in SF Bay Area
That Ronald Reagan/Iran hostages quote from Rudy made me spit out my liquor.
gas is just shy of 3.50/gal for regular here in CA and I’m pretty sure will hit 4 bucks by summer.
newspaperbrat @ 86
Details here:
“Two planes will circle the airspace over tonight’s GOP Presidential debate in Los Angeles with banners that read, “Republicans, Mission Accomplished?” and “McCain, Mission Accomplished?” The planes will take off from Simmi Airfield outside L.A. at 2:30pm and will circle the GOP Presidential Debate until its conclusion”, paid for by “Americans Against Escalation in Iraq”.
What was said about Blackwater? I missed it.
Texas Betsy @ 85
“Everyone’s homework is done.” I like that. ;0)
watertiger @ 136
me too. water. i did hear that one. ugh!
Watertiger #135, I didn’t know I could snort beer until he said that.
Renee in Ohio @ 132
Heavily driven by refining capacity issues… as usual. Nothing here to see, but I’m, of course, happy to see shrub take the blame for it. What can I say, I’m a partisan.
Renee in Ohio @ 131
In LA – gas is $3.50 but I think gas prices should be high. It is the only motivation to conserve and find a better policy than sucking on the gas tit of the middle east.
punaise @ 123
Too true!!! How do I get the last two hours back???
Vote on the debate at MSNBC
Searching for stories about the gas prices, I found this:
Senate bill targets gas price gouging
Jane Hamsher @ 99
I’m worried about McCain. He does not seem well at all.
Dover Bitch @ 145
Thank you. Off to vote.
Oh, brilliant. McCain has Tom Ridge in his corner.
CTuttle @ 144

This administration has crippled their own party.

Hence, the Fear of Ferrets.
Riki Tiki Tavi, anyone?
pwrlght @ 149
Lemme get this straight. MSNBC is showing that only two candidates: Romney and libertarian Ron Paul are being rated positively. Hehe.
OldCoastie @ 136
Wow, Ya beat us here in the Aina, Hilo, HI; 3.18/gal., I thought Enron was Toast!!! Are they resurging???
watertiger @ 149
you mean good ole thin-skinned McCain, who flusters easily?
new slogan: Ruffles has Ridges.
pwrlght @ 143
Sigh. In theory, I get that. But I saw this on the way home after finding out the boatload of money it cost just to get the dogs their shots and heartworm meds today.
The overtime I’m working these days is optional, but it doesn’t feel so optional. And dammit, I’m tired…
I think it’s Romney vs. Fred Thompson for the nomination.
punaise @ 155
Wonderful!
punaise @ 153
HAHAHAHAHAHAH! Oh, that’s good.
Dover Bitch @ 146
FWIW, Ron Paul was the only one with a positive rating in the 40s. Most of them had positives in the teens.
prostratedragon @ 120
Ding. Take my word for it. That’s how it went down. Hi y’all.
Very weak group. Especially when you compare them to the Democrats. I’m rooting for Edwards but will happilly vote for any of our candidates.
I voted for Ron Paul a lot on MSNBC.
I’m confused.
AP – Alone among 10 Republican presidential contenders, Rudy Giuliani said in campaign debate Thursday night “it would be OK” if the Supreme Court upholds a 1973 abortion rights ruling. “It would be OK to repeal it. It would be OK also if a strict constructionist viewed it as precedent,” said the former New York city mayor, who has a record of supporting abortion rights.
Renee in Ohio @ 156
I get ya Renee and when it cost $45 bucks to fill up my car every 5 days – I don’t like it.
punaise @ 150
Can I, Puh-lease!!!
pwrlght @ 149
Tricky vote, watch out, if you click on a candidate to listen (e.g., Ron Paul) it registers a vote (only 375 out of 75,000 plus votes).
Hey, Rudy. We’ve got an irrational person with his hands on the nuclear button right now.
masaccio @ 163
He got my vote. Everyone else got the big old negative.
pwrlght @ 144
Proper city planning and better transportation systems would be good too.
TribeScribe @ 151
That truly was a surreal episode.. chewing out a ferret advocate basically for trying to contact him? On air, for two minutes?
I see a ferret mascot following the Giuliani campaign around the country..
pwrlght @ 168
Too cool!!!
watertiger @ 168
That’s why I sleep well every night. Not.
Better watch out, Texas Betsy…you’re making sense again.
Why is Rudy so touchy about the ferrets? Did Judi staple some of them too?
But …. If Ron Paul is kinda making sense, then he would probably get a lot of votes. Wouldn’t we rather have one of the super-crazies who we can beat one-handed?
RonD @ 174
my apologies
And…..
1. Reagan/hostages: wish Tweety would ask Mr. Ghoul if he thinks it’s ok to trade missiles to the Iranians for hostages?
2. Did I hear Romney refer to Pelosi, Reid, and Hillary as “the gang of 3″? If so, I believe that’s a reference to an old Red Chinese regime? Am I right? If so, Romney just called our Congressional leaders a bunch of commies. He should be driven out of town for saying something like that.
Ghostman
Tom Ridge in your rooting section. That’s a real plus. The original Mr. Charisma and Idea Man.
707!
This will be sweet.
Oh please, please, please team up with a videographer
(and a civil rights/criminal defense attorney [NY NLG knows ‘em].
and a sweet-tempered burly friend. or three.)
How in the hell can they run the country when they don’t even know the truth about the Libby trial. I just don’t understand it. He outed a spy and lied us into war. Damn Comstock earned every dime for coordinating the glossing over andmisinformation. It just makes me sick. These Republicans just don’t get it. NOTHING about the state of the planet nothing!
Texas Betsy @ 176
Just cuz we think Ron Paul is the sanest of the bunch, doesn’t mean the nutters feel the same way. Very little chance of him winning the nomination as he is very much against the war and since fear appears to be the driving motiviaiton for these (insert your favorite pejorative here), he won’t go far.
bluejeansntshirt @ 173
Because he got a bug up his ass about ferrets. Thought they were a health issue for the city. As with everything else Rudy did, he took it to the nth degree.
Texas Betsy @ 170
pwrlght @ 143
The problem is that the profits are going to the oil companies and not to fund conservation or alternative fuels.
The national average for regular gasoline today was $2.991. The wholesale price is about $2.25. There is usually about a 60 cent differential between the two. So other things are going on.
Also as I have pointed out in the past, the supply of crude oil is good. Oil companies have basically put the squeeze on gasoline supplies by reducing refining due to “maintenance”. And yes, as someone said above this is very much like Enron in 2000-2001 in California.
Ghostman @ 178
In China, about 30 years ago, it was “The Gang of Four”…hardcore Maoists, I believe. I’m sure that was his frame of reference.
Texas Betsy @ 175
One thing that assures me after this Debacle, err, I mean Debate, is that Any Dem will prevail!!! Dem’s Kick Ass!!!
From my recent experience, recently disillusioned Bushevics in Texas are going for Ghouliani, because they buy his security 9/11 crap. This needs to be addressed without the stigma of 9/11 conspiracy accusations. Life under Giuliani is a police state, and that is the unadulterated truth. He has no personal character.
neurophius @ 186
Including iirc, Mao’s wife.

I can’t believe I’m typing this but Crist seems like a somewhat honest person/governor. For a Republic that is.
Blub writes: Lemme get this straight. MSNBC is showing that only two candidates: Romney and libertarian Ron Paul are being rated positively. Hehe.
Yep. Looks to me like Paul was the biggest gainer in positives, from before/after the debate. Before, Paul was 9% and Romney was 28, but afterward they’re both at 38%. Paul must have struck a chord with a lot of folks.
steve marvin @ 199
LOL!!!
dakine01 said,
“Including iirc, Mao’s wife.”
I believe you are correct.
Rudy was the Mayor of a city. It was a big city, but he was just a damn Mayor.
What qualifies him to be President?
Speaker Pelosi is doing the job. I am proud to have voted for the Speaker many times while living in her district in Cali.
RonD @ 192
Wow! Now if only we here in Ohio can get that done!
CD @ 202
Either that or too many dems are mucking up their poll :)
renee at 132
Truly, I don’t know. But my jaw dropped to see the price well over $3 a gallon.
fire at exxon facility overseas, maybe it……tried to find the article earlier, but can’t find it again…….
RagingGurrl @ 203
Nothing. Nil. Zilch. Zero. Nada. Rien.
I’ve never lost sleep or spent any length of time worrying about another terrorist attack. And my daughter moved to NYC in 2002. But listening to these guys tonight scares the hell out of me. Some don’t believe in evolution (which should be a clue that they’re idiots), most want ID cards for aliens (which I think would make it easier to arrest US born citizens since they wouldn’t have the card nor proof that they’re not aliens), most are still hedging on global warming and ALL (except Paul)are hate-filled war mongers.
I don’t think any of them have a chance. But if another election is stolen and one of these guys becomes president, God help us.
Hugh @ #185 – I agree that higher prices only mean higher profits for oil companies but it also means greater pressure on politicians and corporations to provide other energy choices. If gas was still $1.75 would there be ANY Hybrid or electric cars on the road?
Blub @ 208
So what? You think the rethugs didn’t vote after the dem debate last week? It’s an old and honored tradition to screw around with the stats wherever possible. :})
Blub @ 208
Shhhh! Don’t tell.
dakine01#201, you’re correct-I voted against Crist to try and break Repub stranglhold, but as Repubs go, Crist is about as good as they get. He’s truly pissing off a lot of the kool-aid drinkers here, which means he’s doing something right. We here in FL could have done a whole lot worse.
The Gang of 4: Jiang Qing (Mao’s wife), Zhang Chunqiao, Yao Wenyuan, and Wang Hongwen
RonD @ 192
Go Florida!!!
Rudy and Bernie says it all.
CD @ 201
Isn’t Paul, like third tier, I mean, doesn’t he rank as well as Gravel within the Hierarchy???
OldCoastie @ 137
Yep. ‘Tis the season for urgent unanticipated refinery repairs.
dakine01 @ 213
I’m not complaining… contributed to my share of the mucking…
About ferrets… about 25 yrs ago my wife and I were at a party at a relative’s apt in NYC, where a lovely wide spectrum of guests were invited. Among whom was a very nice lady wearing a ferret. Nice and long and slinky, kinda like a scarf but warm and with alive-appearing eyes, because it was in fact alive. Neither of us had ever seen one. My very polite young wife (for thus she was then, mercifully she’s changed as far as politeness is concerned, and she will be ever young for me) clapped eyes on the lady with the ferret and the following words leapt all unbidden — and uncensored — from her throat…
“What the F\_/CK is THAT??!!??”
Brought down the house!! :)
Blub @ 207
Naw, we wouldn’t do no such thing!!!
Redstate debate thread: 112 comments by roughly 23 posters.

watertiger @ 84
tnx ArchTeryx! After what WT said, it just makes sense ;)
Oklahoma kiddo @ 21
Rudy, do you think Bush is a traitor for retreating from Afghanistan in the face of Al Qaeda terrorists?
Blub @ 208
Hmmm. Can’t imagine who would do a thing like that. ;0)
solai @ 211
I lost a lot of sleep the early months afte 9/11. Used to check the news every morning to see if we had been hit. Then started learning more.
mrsmarks @ 224
Whoopsy. Hit the wrong button too soon. Not complete. But there’s a wingnuttistan snapshot.
RonD @ 215
You know, I am actually old enough to remember a time when they weren’t all batshit crazy, cryptofascists.
Mathews: “And you Candidate XXX, what would you do to get us back to Regantopia?”
Chris Mathews is a very evil influence on the American electorate!
RagingGurrl @ 205
Having foreign policy happen to him on the day of the greatest (Republican) national security failure ever.
CD @ 32
Tweety: Whom of you are among the non-living?
Repubs: All raise their hands and yell, “me me me”
RonD @ 192
Excellent news. Still worried about shenanigans, though.
DrDick @ 231
Same here.
pwrlght @ 212
True, and a few things happen but not many and and certainly nowhere near enough to constitute an effective response or a coherent policy. And how many politicians have you heard speak recently about what they are going to do about it? Me either.
60 second responses are ridiculous………how are we supposed to get to know the candidates? I’m tired of the process being about obscuring who the political candidate really is.
Chris Matthews is not the person to moderate the debate, nor is the representative from Politico.com. Why not someone very smart and very non-partisan and very knowledgeable about current affairs? Enough spin……why not a real look into the candidates and how they will lead us from 2009 to 2013? This is not an advertising campaign. It is about momentous decisions that we must face as a nation to remedy the great harm that has been done to us by the Bush/Cheney administration. I’m so sick of the spin. End of rant.
MarkH @ 227
Our opponent is Ronald Reagan. Until we defeat/discredit him, there’s no chance of regaining the presidency.
DING!
steve marvin @ 45
Steve, you always make me laugh. Now could you just put the fake arrow through Rudy’s tiara?
RagingGurrl @ 205
Well, he…I mean he…when September 11 happened, he…then, well..he..said something..
Thaaat’s abouuuut iiitttt. What he actually DID was put his command center in the WTC (that was reeeeaaal smart), then he didn’t take warnings into account and DO anything about it (even though the WTC had been previously attacked)…then..well, he didn’t have a plan coordinated with (Cheney?)or the military or someone to make sure NYC was at all times COVERED by Air Force fighter jets that could DEFLECT, SHOOT DOWN, or REDIRECT aircraft that potentially fly into the financial center of the WORLD (containing at it’s normal daily occupancy 50,000 human beings) or any other potential target. That is what he DID as Mayor of NYC or didn’t do, depending on how you want to view it.
How about all those f*ckin’ Republic’s micromanaging the war? Hard to sit still and listen to them give their advice about what should be done in the war, when they’re hammering the holy shit out of Democrats for speaking for the military leaders?
watertiger @ 183
Whoa…and all this time I’ve thought it was an urban myth.
Even with this and the transvestism, he still polls well in the heartland.
The flyover states are much kinkier than I thought.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 206
Yes. She is doing the job and she’s pissed.
Look out!
WATB and PoolBoy on with Tweety now. Not handling the sat-delay very well. “We lurved yer questions, Tweety.” {para}
pwrlght @ 223
Yeah, and Russert is a blue collar guy from Buffalo.
It will not be “morning in America” as the “great communicator” exclaimed…. It will be nighty-night GOP in ‘08. And it will be a new day. But the fight will not end there. And we know it.
Ghostman @ 178
You heard that right.
pwrlght @ 225
And why, pray tell, is he telling us about the health of his digestive system?
jayt @ 56
Isn’t he “The Fascist Gun in the West”?
TeddySanFran @ 233
So, if it weren’t for the 9/11 tragedy he wouldn’t be able to run for President.
kirk murphy @ 244
As someone who has spent his whole life in flyover land, I have to tell you that you have no idea just how kinky they are.
DrDick,dakine#236, I do too…and I encourage anyone who wants to know what a Republican is supposed to be like to go to the Eisenhower Papers site, here.
Senate committee debate from today on CAFE standards in on 2span now.
Aliens will have their id cards, but no worries, we citizens will avoid arrest by displaying the bar code tatooed on the backs of our necks, ala 12 Monkeys…
msnbc – what debate were these talking heads watching? jeez!
has anyone even mentioned Paul?
CTuttle @ 187
Paul does not stand a chance in the republican primary.
David Schuster truth-squadding!
OldCoastie @ 257
That would mean having done their homework on Paul so they could speak intelligently on him. What is the possibility they did that? (my guess is zero!)
Ronald Reagan was singularly one dimensitional. His legend is a fake. Quite celluloid. And if you judge this person on his politics, he was a bad man.
LS: and don’t forget that Ghoul FAILED to equip his rescue services with properly working radios. He had….eight years to get this done??
Ghostman
So, cloning is a code word for the theocrats, like Dred Scott?
Oklahoma kiddo @ 261
Celluloid heroes in operation…
TeddySanFran @ 259
This segment should be two hours long not 10 min. Shuster had a lot to work with in this debate.
DrDick @ 253
kirk murphy @ 244
watertiger @ 183
bluejeansntshirt @ 173
Why is Rudy so touchy about the ferrets? Did Judi staple some of them too?
Because he got a bug up his ass about ferrets.
Whoa…and all this time I’ve thought it was an urban myth.
Even with this and the transvestism, he polls well in the heartland.
The flyover states are a lot kinkier than I thought.
As someone who has spent his whole life in flyover land, I have to tell you that you have no idea just how kinky they are.
These folks are addicted to hypocricy. They can’t get off on simply getting it on. It gotta be kinky or it don’t cut it. It’s hard to believe the hypocricy is addictive, but I’ve come to find that it is.
Zig freed by Mod
Loo Hoo @ 258
And, he was pretty damn lame, even for a libertarian. But I love a lot of his written work.
I really can spell “dimensional”. Oh well… who cares?
No mention of the number of IRAQIs killed in this war — just truthsquadding Thompson’s counts of Americans injured.
Just checked the MSNBC poll, fwiw, Hitleranni is running away with it.
KO — over 2,000 votes on their Rate the Candidates website, with Ron Paul at 39%.
bomb bomb bomb bomb Iran….
The Daddy Party sure knows how to do homoerotic macho, don’t they?
That these cretins get a credible airing by anyone is a travesty.
Were there any questions about Mitt’s haircuts?
No, didn’t think so.
Tweety was breathless afterwards-he’s got some real issues.
And Keith, giving him straight lines-couldn’t believe it!
The pod people have gotten to Keith too.
WaPo headline tomorrow:
“Studly Repubs outshine wimpy Dems in first presidential debate”
Just remember, bluster is not policy. And these bastards couldn’t keep their dog safe.
KO notes the Ron Paul is leading the poll.
Keep up the good work folks.
KO gives props to Ron Paul leading the the msnbc poll going to into commercial break. nice :)
McCain looks like he has fused vertebrae. Does he ever turn his head independently from his body? Rigid body, rigid brain.
Eureka Springs @ 268
And THIS is why I argue with people who say “Oh, Giuliani won’t make it past the primaries.”
TeddySanFran @ 271
Did you hear KO off camera while Shuster was still talking? “Whose in the lead?” – add disbelieve in asking the question to KO’s tone.
HotFlash @ 131
I could say the same about voting for Ron Paul before voting for any of the other Republicans.
I’d just prefer to start a little further to the Left (Gore, Edwards, Richardson).
CNN quick vote asks if debate changed minds to more favorable about any of the GOP candidates Yes or No. Nos leading 82-18.
RagingGurrl @ 275
You forgot the limp dick and lack of spine
watertiger @ 276
How many MSNBC viewers do you think are going to vote in a GOP primary?
Now if it was a Fox poll . . .
RonD @ 134
I like Clarke’s slightly snarky attitude and his bright wit. He reminds me of Steven Wright — and there are few people like him.
OT I know, but have you guys wondered where the heck is Monica Goodling?
I’m wondering why there hasn’t been any sightings/paparazzi fests…
dakine01 @ 279
Wonderful!
jeffreyw @ 273
The site only lets you vote once so I think that’s an accurate assessment. Truth is, Americans have come to their senses. Or the blogosphere is skewed left.
Wigwam, what do you mean by lame? Lame normally means “crippled” or “limping”. If one doesn’t express an aggressiveness of some kind, does that make one lame? Do you mean hampered, or do you mean just wimpy? Whenever a human expresses freedom, or peace, or lack of control over others (read dominance), it often translates into weakness, or lameness. Perhaps I am missing the point, but what makes you feel that he was lame? Just curious, no offense intended at all.
I don’t think the GOP frontrunners will be doing any more debates anytime soon.
Eureka Springs @ 270
By design.
randiego @ 283
Maybe if they ACTUALLY SAW A PICTURE OF WHAT SHE REALLY LOOKS LIKE THEY WOULD RECOGNIZE HER. Just in case she “accompanied” anyone to any official affairs, that is.
randiego @ 283
What are you implying? She’s sleeping with the fishes?
Peterr – DO you have a link to your FDL multi-cons defined post from last summer?
btw, over 73k voted at msnbc so far..
jeffreyw @ 255
Thanks, re CAFE standards,
1) The numbers on fuel efficiency should reflect real world conditions.
2) Fleet standards should include SUVs and light trucks; heavier trucks and Hummers should be heavily penalized.
3) CAFE standards should also take into account the number and mix of cars actually sold by car manufacturers.
BTW, Commander Guy’s hair is still GREEN in the Commander Guy video.
FYI, LATE NITE
Wigwam @ 238
You mean – Reagan is the Grimace? But I thought that was McCain..
I’ve always insisted that we shouldn’t be surprised about how Giuliani feels about ferrets.
After all, this is a man who leaves pet wives and pet children far more easily and callously than most of us would ever discard an animal.
Paul is 48% approval. Romney not doing badly. everyone else has low approval. You think Americans are angry?
DrDick @ 253
Hee-hee.
I’ve been starting to wonder…
over the last three years serving delightful patients in SF LGBT/HIV psych clinics, the “Big 10″ gay contingent has excelled in carnal creativity and ingenuity.
Gave me a whole new take on “corn-fed”.
(Hiding in plain sight?
Animal husbandry.)
randiego @ 283
holed up with her lawyers trying to figure out how quickly shrub’s going to sell her out and how much time she’s going to have to do as a result
Blub @ 299
Someone in America must know Monica Goodling, no?
solai @ 297
How is the MSM going to paper this over?
They can’t possibly tell the world this nobody Texas Congressman is their leader. It just wouldn’t do.
LS @ 242
And with Keric as his cabbie – no telling who or what else Rudy did.
Tommy Thompson has issued a retraction already for his anti-gay statement. It’s thin, of course.
Porsupah @ 137
Woo Hoo – thank you – masterful! Dick Tuck Forever! Linky to video clip per chance?
is rudy making money off the rats in the city and knows that if ferrets get loose they will wipe up the rat population?
it does sound like his kind of deal. real pied piper stuff.
Hope this link works . . .
Just to brighten your day, ferret style. I love those little weasels — when my hyperthyroid stepson came to live with his father and me many many years ago, we got Loki (female) to keep him company. Constant amusement, and lots of love.
Giuliani’s a jerk. May he lose all his fur.
