Well, well, well. Planeloads of Republican politicians have been earning zillions of frequent-flyer miles over the past few years doing unofficial shuttle diplomacy with Syria and Condi Rice did nothing, but it just took newly-elected Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's one little old bipartisan mission to pry Secretary Rice loose from her chair and onto a plane for Damascus.
Here's The Carpetbagger Report on the upcoming Rice trip:
As I recall, when the Speaker of the House chatted with Syrian officials last month, the White House, congressional Republicans, and far-right activists were apoplectic. CNN ran a news segment on Pelosi’s trip titled “Talking to Terrorists.”
The ringleader of this spectacularly stupid smear was the Bush White House. Somehow I suspect Rove & Co. will be a little quieter now.
Just to be clear, I’m not criticizing Rice for possibly having discussions with Syria’s Foreign Minister; I’m just stunned by the hypocrisy of it all.
Literally just one month ago, the Bush administration said U.S. officials should not have contact with the Syrian government, accusing the Syrians of meddling in Lebanon, supporting terrorism, and being unhelpful on Iraq. White House spokesperson Dana Perino said it sends the wrong “message” for members of Congress to discuss anything with Syrian officials.
For a lot of conservatives, that’s all they needed to hear. Indeed, far-right blogs pounced — one said this is proof that “Democrats seem to be setting up a separate government with its own suicidally blind idea of who’s a terrorist and who isn’t (basically, nobody is).” Another insisted that Pelosi’s decision to visit with Syrians is “repulsive” and questioned her loyalty to the U.S. Another still asked, “Can we question [Democrats’] patriotism now?” Yet another concluded that Pelosi’s talks “teeter on the edge of treason.”
Dick Cheney called Pelosi’s discussions “bad behavior.” The president personally criticized talks with Syria, saying discussions have been “counterproductive” and concluding that they send “mixed signals” to the Middle East. For two weeks, Fox News talked about almost nothing else.
And now, lo and behold, Bush’s Secretary of State seems to believe talking with high-ranking Syrian officials may not be such a bad idea after all. Will CNN run features about Rice “talking to terrorists”? Somehow, I doubt it.
Not much more to add to this, other than that Rice's sudden decision to visit Damascus, hard on the heels of the Pelosi trip, shows that Nancy Pelosi's bi-partisan delegation to Syria has had, as those who know what's going on have said, a positive effect.

Hello…
Someone’s gotta be the adult here… might as well be a grandma!
I love Pelosi!!
I remain strongly supportive of our Speaker.
Jacqrat @ 1
Yupper!
PW – Could impending subpoenas and threats of subpoenas have provided her with additional motivation to travel to Damascus?
By the way:
I really wasn’t looking for the nastiest photo of Madam Secretary, nor the most flattering one of Madam Speaker. I was just looking for pics that weren’t too big for our dial-up users. (Believe me, there was an even nastier one of Rice that I decided against using. And it wasn’t Photoshopped, either.)
ugh. The hypocrisy. It hurts the brain.
The part that hurts more is that there’ll be no apologies, no balance. None of these people who screamed about Pelosi’s trip will now say “huh, I was mistaken.” I mean I’d even take the bozo prize and hope that this would further alienate Bush (”why is he sending Condi to Damascus? He doesn’t represent us”), but that certainly won’t happen either.
Stephen Parrish, CPA @ 5
Heh! Could be. For various reasons.
On the contrary, Rice needs to go over there ASAP to undo the damage done by our treasonous Speaker who obviously hates America and children and kittens.
They sell shoes in Damascus, right?
Why does Rice support the terrorists?
I hear the sandal shopping in Damascus is Faaaabulous this time of year.
OMG!
I opened the page and saw that picture of Condi and started laughing my head off!
Still snickering…
I guess I’ll go read the post now.
HaHAhAhA
Thanks for the laugh.

But I do love this pic of Condi. What a scowl she’s got on!
That TRAITOR! “Talking To Terrorists”!
Backstabbing the Israelis! And think of how this will affect our troops!
And I heard that she wants to talk to the IRANIANS, as well! But they turned her down, for the time being!

most pix of Rice are nasty. Maybe she’s just a nasty person. I saw her on the TV coverage of Gerald Ford’s funeral, sitting next to Chelsea Clinton, and she even looked nasty then.
EPU
Bob Joseph left Condi’s shop in January ‘07:
In congressional testimony, intelligence officials connected Joseph to the language, saying that he had repeatedly pressed the CIA to back the inclusion in Bush’s speech of a statement about Iraq’s attempts to buy uranium from Niger. Joseph later argued that he did not recall the CIA raising concerns about the credibility of the information to be included in the speech (see James Risen and David Singer, “After the War: CIA Uproar; New Details Emerge on Uranium Claim and Bush’s Speech,” New York Times, July 18, 2003; and Julian Borger, “Democrats Step up Pressure on Uranium Claims,” Guardian, July 14, 2003).”

fleeing the jurisdiction, I tell ya.
It’s soooo weird. The relationship between the President and his Secretary of State.
Of course, her friends and her stepmother Clara Rice offered a simpler explanation for why she stayed: “she just can’t say no to that man.”
It’s as if Nancy walked into the saloon and said to Condi, “Dance!”
Oklahoma kiddo @ 21
Rice never talks with her mouth full. (Drumroll)
I think basically the White House doesn’t give a crap what Rice does to fill the lonely emptiness of her days. They are deeply afflicted with end-stage Nixonian policy necrosis. Minor show-ponies at the fringes of the administration can do what they like, as long as it doesn’t interfere with the dead-ender core stacking sand-bags around the Decider Bunker.

Actually, a year ago I was myself on the road to Damascus, in Yarmuk Jordan, near the border. There was a nice mosque pointed out to me given to the local indigent community by Saddam Hussein and named after him. You have to give the guy a little credit, this bit of charity and the way he died.

Although I applaud having a dialog with the Syrians (as well as with the Libyans, Iranians, North koreans, et al), the reality is, nothing will come of this. Little Boots does not understand the fine art of negotiating and how sometimes there has to be a little give rather than take take take. Just as his idea of compromise is to tell the House and Senate what to do, take it or leave it, I’m sure it’s the same with Kinda-Sleezy going to Damascus. A little flash and zero (zed?) substance.

No kidding. And, after waiting what she thought was a suitable interval in the hopes that no one would notice, she did.
Condi is ducking for cover, nothing else. Can subpoenas be delivered from the Senate to Syria?
IIRC, Condi had that same scowl on her face during the SOTU as she leaned forward in her seat watching

Nancy looks her age, but she makes her age look good. Condi — well, the less said, the better.
Old Sow @ 76
OLD SOW!!! How are you?
She scowls like that because she never quite understands what people are saying. Condi is not altogether dumb, and appears a rocket scientist in the WH, but she knows Only the Cold War, with the rest beyond her. She is, after all one of the generation of whom in 1990 one asked — “What does Saddam know that no American under 45 knows?” The answer was “How to find Kuwait on a map!”
In my experience she will be out of luck in Damas for shoes —- the local leather is none so good. Now Beyrouth shops……. If she went there we should bever see her again.

RUSH: Ladies and gentlemen, did you hear about this poor guy, the CEO of British Petroleum? “Lord John Browne, an aggressive but mannerly British magnate who transformed BP into one of the most successful global companies, resigned abruptly Tuesday after losing a court battle with a London tabloid over disclosure of his sexual relationship with a younger man. In one of the most humiliating come-downs in British business life, Browne acknowledged offering an ‘untruthful account’ to a court about the circumstances under which he had met the man, a former companion…. At the height of his powers, Browne had been knighted in 1998 and Prime Minister Tony Blair made him a life peer in 2001, a token of the close relationship between the company and the prime minister.” Now, apparently this guy had a little tryst with another man and lied about it and it got reported and so forth. Folks, I’m going to tell you: I don’t think this can be true. I think enemies of Lord Brown have totally made this up. How in the world can this possibly be true? It couldn’t have happened! I mean, no one ever loses his job because of lying under oath in a civil case — especially about sex.

Sunni Muslim sheikhs join US in fighting Al Qaeda
Ramadi, Iraq – Amid fields of wheat and barley, dozens of armed men emerged along a dirt road leading to the fiefdom of the Bu-Fahed tribe in Hamdhiyah, an idyllic corner of restive Anbar Province, just north of Ramadi. “Welcome to our proud sheikhs. Down with terror,” read banners on the road.
Dozens of sheikhs and tribal elders in flowing gold-trimmed camel-hair cloaks, many clutching colorful worry beads, streamed into a conference hall. Each was frisked by tribesmen to guard against suicide bombs.
The meeting looked to be a typical gathering, but its true purpose was for top sheikhs to issue an ultimatum: quit supporting Al Qaeda and turn in relatives belonging to the group.

1,504 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN GOEZ ON AND ON AND..
Citizen Pheonix Woman and the Firepup Patriots:
ALERT!! Please Firepups go read the tristero post up at Digby. As we and our democracy slowly backstroke around the drain, it is important to realize that we have come to that point in political conflict when there is no middle and no compromise. We are at the end of history here, there is no longer a dialectic…the antithesis of democratic constitutionalism is fascism and it holds power right now.
We can’t wait for the 2008 elections to put and end to the perpetual “war on terror”. With Steny Hoyer’s comin’ out of the closet today, it’s clear that political compromises to keep the war in Iraq goin’ indefinitely only close the coffin on the Constitution as we know it.
We are in a state of civil war with our own government, therefore, there is no middle ground..there is no halfway point between democracy and fascism. Anyone who supports continuing the war in Iraq beyond a date certain in this year is not a democrat or a Democrat. There are no longer Democrats and Republicans, there are only democrats and fascists.
No compromise on anything, from this moment forward we must…
KEEP THE FAITH AND LET OUR LEADERS KNOW WHERE WE’RE GOIN’ BECAUSE THEY ARE OUR LEADERS AND THEY MUST LEAD US!!

i am beginning to think that iraq is like a gathering where the kids are not included, and they resent it……..bunch of adults in one room trying to talk, being interrupted by a bunch of wild undisciplined kids intent on not letting the adults talk………what do you do? discipline the kids? when their parents won’t? so you can’t talk? no, you leave and go home and don’t go back…..or include the kids in it…..
iraq can’t do the adult things, they are run over with kids tryin’ to run things, we need to leave and go back when the adults are in charge, or the kids are included……. when the company leaves, they go back to functioning like a regular family. it’s the having adult company where they aren’t included they don’t like.
we need to get outta there. they can run their own household if we would just leave. because we don’t include the kids in our talking……because we’re the adults and don’t want their input.
Here’s the picture you wanted. (May have been Photoshopped).

Since I had warning that he was being a bigger a** than usual, I’m stickin’ with sports until KO comes on. I made the mistake of watching him get all excited yesterday and realized he’ll only get worse the closer he gets to the debate.

Why does Rep. Hoyer hate privacy?
Why is Rep. Hoyer demanding private data from callers – and hence from constituents who disagree with him?
What will Rep. Hoyer’s office do with the home addresses of constituents who object to his vote?
Is the House Majority Leader keeping a list of citizens who disagree with him?
Is the House Majority Leader keeping an enemies’ list – of his constituents?

Chris Mathews on MSNBC’s Hardball is called Tweety even though he looks more like Howdy Doody. John Gibson of Faux Noise on the other hand, looks like Tweety bird. Oh well, can’t have everything.
I am not watching Tweety he makes me sick. His bootlicking has to stop.
and for those who feel they are being ‘tracked’
if your choices were made with conviction as you grew, then it ‘ain’t’ no big deal, you’d stand by that, yes? so, what are you worried about? it’s the same as a resume………how do you want your life resume to read? i know how mine reads, honest, true…….so, let them track you, write a history of what you believe to be true so you can stand on it………
like my bumper sticker says:
when you tell the truth you don’t have to remember what you said/
that’s what the goopers who are being tracked don’t have, telling the truth………nothing to stand on…….please don’t worry about what the government has on you, if it was honest, you dont’ need to remember or worry about it.

From Justin’s site — ‘antiwar’
Here is Philip Giraldi on Iran. This what A**AC is exhorting our Congress People, both Parties, both Houses, to do on THEIR country’s behalf. It has to be done more stealthily than Iraq ‘cos so many of us are now alerted, but unless our Congress People wake up to the fact that the US is utterly under their control it is likely to be where we end up. The drip fed lies are slower and subtler this time, but they are relentlessly oozing out.

I’ve always been willing to live up to the decision I’ve made in my life. I think they call it taking adult responsibility or something li’e dat. Lying is too much like hard work and hard work is real hard to do and since I don’t like hard work, I tell the truth so I don’t have to work hard at remembering what lies I told to what people.

In this instance it stands for Office of Proffessional Responsibility in Dept of Justice. The office that is SUPPOSED to help keep the lawyers doing their jobs correctly. A form of IG if you will.
But you can google IIRC (if I Remember correctly) acronym list which should get you a fairly comprehensive list of the most commonly used.
(Now in deep EPU-land!)
Thanks Dakine, for your forbearance in answering my question! I know, I know, I should look these things up myself – but I am only able to do a drive-by right now, and didn’t have time for research. So, thanks again for helping me out! I will now be able to sleep tonight! (-: (That is, with my usual Benadryl and Tylenol )

..the President made the following remarks on US efforts in Iraq:
…”But slowly but surely, the truth will be known. Either we’ll succeed, or we won’t succeed. And the definition of success as I described is sectarian violence down. Success is not, no violence. There are parts of our own country that have got a certain level of violence to it. But success is a level of violence where the people feel comfortable about living their daily lives. And that’s what we’re trying to achieve.

From the Herals Sun: Prince Harry’s deployment to Iraq will be delayed for as long as possible so that the rest of the soldiers in his unit can acclimatise themselves to their surroundings.

I should be surprised if that were true. Cohesion and HRH’s safety would be better-served if they all do the acclimatisation together. There will be many in the unit who have done this before. added to which the British Army has a long history of Counter-Insurgency and Aid of the Civil Power which is one of the reasons their proportionate casualty rate is so much lower. —-

Whilst in Beverly Hills today, my friend told me that he and his partner had been invited up to the premier of a new movie in SanFran a couple of weeks ago. All the “in” Hollywood crowd were there, including Arnie and Maria.
Before the movie started, the MC apeared and said that everyone would be delighted to know that our own Nancy Pelosi is in the audience. Speaker Pelosi, would you please stand.
My friend said that she stood and was just about in the middle of the audience. The whole audience rose to their feet and cheered and cheered her. He said that he’d never heard anything like it.

Pelosi’s speaking skills seem to have soared since her first somewhat tentative appearances as Whip. These days she exudes confidence.
Now, somebody should tell her colleagues to knock off putting an arm around her shoulder in front of the camera. It smacks of patronization and diminishes her appearance of personal power.
It was *maybe* understandable during the celebratory events when she first took office, but I saw someone (Hoyer?)do it again last week in front of a mike. She needs political support, not physical support. I read it as passive aggressive – not unlike the Merkel back-rub, just lower on the egregiousness scale.
SnarKassandra >
I`m waaaay behind but I think this needs to be answered.
Yes, there are technical ways to do this but it is not likely to be done on a wide scale unless there is some particular reason to do so like “theft of service” as mentioned above etc. Requires resources etc.

May 13, 2007 — Great Silent Grandmother Gathering
Inspired by Sharon Mehdi’s children’s picture book, The Great Silent Grandmother Gathering, a group of women in Ohio has issued a call for women all over the world to stand silently for 5 minutes at 1 p.m. local time on May 13, 2007 — to save the world. The story and a short video are available at http://www.standingwomen.org .
Where will you stand?
