Apparently unfazed by her veritable Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade of glaring errors on the day of the Virginia Tech shootings ("The shooter's a 'Paki'! Islamic Jihad has come to Blacksburg!"), D-List Righty Screamer Debbie Schlussel is still trying to pin random crimes on shadowy cabals of mythical Muslim terrorists.
Rhetorical bomb-thrower Debbie Schlussel is on John D'oh Watch in Michigan:
An unnamed 23-year-old man from Canton, Michigan–a Detroit suburb near Dearbornistan with a large Muslim population composed primarily of Pakis, er … Pakistanis–should be among this year's candidates for the Darwin awards.
He and his friends created homemade bombs using gunpowder and tennis and ping-pong balls. The unnamed man almost lost one of his hands from an explosion from one of the bombs, Sunday. He and his friends were throwing the bombs onto the road from the side of a truck.
Yes, based on absolutely nothing than her own hysterical prejudices and the number of "Pakis" she believes are living in the area (the bulk of the Middle Eastern population there are actually Lebanese and Palestinian), Schlussel has decided that any mullet-wearing moron who makes a homemade firecracker in certain parts of Michigan is an al Qaeda operative and a threat to national security. Hysterical much?
But, oh, there's more.
Asserting that "[s]ince Muslim terrorists are generally more clandestine — and occasionally more clever," Schlussel said that the alleged cherry bomb maker and his friends in fact "might not be Muslim." The only basis she cited for her speculation that they might be Pakistani was that, according to her, there is a "large Muslim Paki, er … Pakistani population" in Canton. As Media Matters for America noted when Schlussel used the term in an April 16 blog post, "Paki" is a disparaging term for a person of Pakistani descent. Schlussel used the term "Paki" twice in the May 1 post, and said in her second use of the term: "I would be remiss in not pointing out the large Muslim Paki, er … Pakistani population in Canton. After all, I wouldn't want to disappoint my friends from the deceptively-named, Nazi-funded Media Matters for America."
In describing Media Matters as "Nazi-funded," Schlussel linked to an April 18 blog post in which she falsely claimed that Media Matters was funded by philanthropist George Soros and smeared Soros as "a fake Holocaust survivor, who — instead of 'surviving' the Holocuast [sic] — helped the Nazis perpetrate it."
The goddamn Rightards parted ways with the truth so long ago that they don't even know where it lives anymore.
But let's talk about who in this country has actually been funded by Nazis, shall we?
George Bush's grandfather, the late US senator Prescott Bush, was a director and shareholder of companies that profited from their involvement with the financial backers of Nazi Germany.
The Guardian has obtained confirmation from newly discovered files in the US National Archives that a firm of which Prescott Bush was a director was involved with the financial architects of Nazism.
His business dealings, which continued until his company's assets were seized in 1942 under the Trading with the Enemy Act, has led more than 60 years later to a civil action for damages being brought in Germany against the Bush family by two former slave labourers at Auschwitz and to a hum of pre-election controversy.
The evidence has also prompted one former US Nazi war crimes prosecutor to argue that the late senator's action should have been grounds for prosecution for giving aid and comfort to the enemy.
The debate over Prescott Bush's behaviour has been bubbling under the surface for some time. There has been a steady internet chatter about the "Bush/Nazi" connection, much of it inaccurate and unfair. But the new documents, many of which were only declassified last year, show that even after America had entered the war and when there was already significant information about the Nazis' plans and policies, he worked for and profited from companies closely involved with the very German businesses that financed Hitler's rise to power. It has also been suggested that the money he made from these dealings helped to establish the Bush family fortune and set up its political dynasty.
(h/t to commenter DUDACKATTACK!!! at TBogg's.)
And now let's talk about terrorists in America.
BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — Five members of a self-styled Alabama militia were denied bond Tuesday after a federal agent testified they planned a machine-gun attack on Mexicans. A sixth man accused of having weapons and explosives components in his home was approved for release.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert Armstrong said he could not grant bond because of the agent's testimony and the large number of weapons — including about 200 homemade hand grenades and a launcher — that were seized in raids last Friday.
(snip)
Adam Nesmith, an agent with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, testified that the five men planned an attack on Mexicans in a small town just north of Birmingham, and went there on a reconnaissance mission April 20.
Nesmith said one of the men told an informant that the group, which calls itself the Alabama Free Militia, saw government agents as "the enemy" and had a standing order to open fire if anyone saw government agents approaching.
It's like Chris Rock says, "I ain't scared of al Queda! I'm scared of Al Cracker."
We'll see if Schlussel decides to assert that this passel of Alabama Asshats are actually double super secret Muslims with names like Bubba "Allah Akhbar" McDuffy, Skeeter "Muhammed Hussein" Williams, and Jeb "Jihadi" Johnson. I wouldn't put it past her. Anyone whose blog prominently features a photo of themselves that's been as heavily photoshopped as Debbie's clearly feels no obligation to present anything even approaching the truth.
Tsk, tsk. Kind of makes you sick, doesn't it?

Trex!
Alright! I’ve been feeling a bit down today. Maybe this will change my outlook. Prolly ought to read first though.

Howdy TRex.
I thought the term “Paki” went the way of British colonialism. Guess not, at least in Debbie’s world!
EVERYBODY! emphasis on TRex.
What kind of pecksniffery is this?
Sorry, it’s just so fun to say pecksniffery.
EPU’d. Worth asking again:
Here’s an IANAL question:
If Goodling broke the law in setting up illegal hiring parameters for new DOJ employees, do those who weren’t interviewed or were rejected after interview have grounds to sue, either individually or collectively? And if that happens, do those hired under the illegal parameters warrant some sort of review beyond their performance on the job since their hire?
Who knew she was gonna target Ted Nugent?! “When in doubt, I just whip it out, got me a rock and roll band, it’s a free for all!”

That’s the line of the month. Spew is away.
Evening, gang! How are my wonderful, wonderful readers ce soir?
Evening Pups and magnificent therapod.
We oughtta introduce Little Debbie to that woman who accused those scary dark-skinned men on her flight who had the effrontery to say Muslim prayers of being terraists because… well, because they were scary brown-skinned men!
They’d hit it off great. They could go for coffee together and stuff and talk about how scary brown-skinned Muslim men are. Or something.
Helen @ 17
Devil Bunnies!
What kind of fuckery is this?!?!
No, it says, “Cranberry Sauce”, dammit. I swear that’s what it says.

well, IAAL, though not an expert in these particular issues — but since no one more knowledgeable has stepped up I’ll venture a semi-educated guess. I think that unless the illegal parameters were, like, SO illegal that they violated an employment discrimination law (race, age, disability, etc.), that those rejected would not have any recourse — except maybe to apply again. As for those hired (gimme an R! gimme an E! gimme a G!…..) I don’t know of any way that an enhanced performance review could be required, unless Congress passed a special statute, or something.
I sit ready to be corrected by any gov’t lawyers out there.
Gnight Doggies, Balrog I’ll stop torturing you.
ahhh – fuckery – it rolls off my tongue nicely…..

In honor of the impending birth of Li’l Balrog, I give you Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison:

Well they’re building a gallows outside my cell I’ve got 25 minutes to go
And the whole town’s waitin’ just to hear me yell I’ve got 24 minutes to go
Well they gave me some beans for my last meal I’ve got 23 minutes to go
But nobody asked me how I feel I’ve got 22 minutes to go
Well I sent for the governor and the whole dern bunch with 21 minutes to go
And I sent for the mayor but he’s out to lunch I’ve got 20 more minutes to go
Then the sheriff said boy I gonna watch you die got 19 minutes to go
So I laughed in his face and I spit in his eye got 18 minutes to go
Now hear comes the preacher for to save my soul with 13 minutes to go
And he’s talking bout’ burnin’ but I’m so cold I’ve 12 more minutes to go
Now they’re testin’ the trap and it chills my spine 11 more minutes to go
And the trap and the rope aw they work just fine got 10 more minutes to go
Well I’m waitin’ on the pardon that’ll set me free with 9 more minutes to go
But this is for real so forget about me got 8 more minutes to go
With my feet on the trap and my head on the noose got 5 more minutes to go
Won’t somebody come and cut me loose with 4 more minutes to go
I can see the mountains I can see the skies with 3 more minutes to go
And it’s to dern pretty for a man that don’t wanna die 2 more minutes to go
I can see the buzzards I can hear the crows 1 more minute to go
And now I’m swingin’ and here I go-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o!

It’s explicitly in the Constitution that you can’t have a “religious test” for govt employees. If there was a pattern of booting people that didn’t go to bible study meetings, replacing them with ones who did, using some sort of religious basis for promotions or firings–that is unconstitutional.
IANAL.

These are lawyers applying to work in the United States Department of Justice, preparing to uphold and defend the constitution of the United States. They spent years in law school, earning their degrees, and then more time boning up to pass the bar exam. Some of them have clerked for judges at various levels of the judiciary, and others may have spent years in practice of the law.
If, after all that, they DON’T know that asking them about their party affiliation is illegal, they don’t belong in the DOJ in the first place!
Okay, I can’t take credit for this, I read it years ago.
But a quick and easy way to find out who’s a Dem or Repub, is ask who the most talented Beatle was.
Repubs will answer Paul McCartney.
Texas Betsy @ 94
Unfortunately, so is Steny Hoyer.
Have you noticed that according to rethuglicans (and the MSM) the democrats are pursuing witch hunts?
That Ken Starr thing over Bill Clinton’s peckerdillo was apparently NOT a witch hunt. Nor was Whitewater, Vince Foster, etc.
The difference here (that the MSM has neither noticed nor acknowledged) is that the rethugs have committed dozens of actual crimes in every department and in every division.

oddmommy – thanks for replying earlier. My son and I are outside a lot this afternoon. Changing oil and tires on cars. Mowing up leaves where there was ice four days ago.
I trained people in the mid-70s through early 90s in “how not to screw up a hire or termination” and never had one hire or fire come back to slap me – many tried. I see a possible HUGE case. Depending on how Goodling is questioned and responds, this may become the exact opposite of Reagan and the air traffic controllers…
Texas Betsy @ 106
I heard on the news that south Texas was having nasty weather. Is that affecting you as well?
Excellent post TRex. Here’s a vid to go with the Guardian article: Bush connected to the Nazi Party?
So I caught a interview of the Repugs savior Fred Thompson on a rightwing blog, The guys is not even declared yet and is announcing that the Democratic party is being controlled by extremist, and are the closest thing to wanting to see America fail. So it went something like that, not exact quote. This guy is hitting all the wing nut talking points early on and the wing nuts at freeperland and redstate are having orgasms over him. I just heard of the guy a few weeks ago and already I am scratching my head. Does FDL happen to have any diarys on this guy as of yet? if so a link would be great.
Annie@102
That’s a good one. A better one might be “which group do you prefer, Beatles or Stones?”

Peterr @ 101
Yeah – but here’s the thing. Very early in my career I was told that I was chosen for an interview because I was a woman. The interviewer told me that he polled the dept and asked if they wanted to work for a woman and they all said “NO” But he wanted to see me cuz “women don’t do numbers” I walked out, not because I did not know that what he was saying was illegal, but because there was NO WAY I would work for a place with that kind of attitude. This was 20 yrs ago. Surely a democratic graduate from, say, Yale law, would just move on, like I did.

A hundred and fifty (Neochristian warrior) lawyers from Pat Robertson’s Regent University (Goodling is one) have been hired by Commander Codpiece’s gubmint. Regent is a 4 on a scale of one to four. four is the worst.
In other words, Regent is not even a good law school. (But hey, Pat Robertson owns it – he’s a Bushie and a war-mongering hypocrite.)

Good for you.
My response was aimed at your question, “Do the applicants know that this is illegal?” I damn well hope they did — however they reacted if/when the question was asked.
For that matter, Goodling ought to have known it was illegal. Given that she’s now pleading the fifth, I think she’s figured that out if she didn’t know it at the time.

There has been a plot afoot to infiltrate all aspects of government with christian-soldier types. We’ve seen the infiltration by Regent’s University graduates in the DoJ and the takeover of the Air Force by others. The overall effort has been discussed here:

IMHO, christians have the same rights as anyone else to maintain their jobs if they are doing them well. But, what if they got those jobs for and through conspiracies not of their own construction? I.e., a lot of these kids are probably not quite aware of the games in which they are pawns. Do they have the same rights as other civil service employees to continue to hold their positions?

Wow! In many ways I think that Glenn is being too gentle.
Mansfield is a nutcase. He is full of shit. And, I’ve never seen anyone bust that notion of “macho perogative” the way that Molly Ivins did in her 2005 essay, “Some kind of manly”:
Canton, MI does not have a particularly large percentage of residents from the middle east. I don’t know offhand the specific numbers, but my pretty well-educated guess is that Canton has a much larger percentage of residents of European, African and Indian descent than those from the middle east. To compare the percentage of people of middle eastern heritage in Dearborn to those in Canton is rather laughable.
A large percentage of people in the greater Dearborn area who are of middle eastern heritage are not Muslim. By a significant margin, the largest percentage of people from the middle east in Dearborn and nearby communities are Lebanese Christians. We also have a very large Chaldean community (Catholics from Assyria: i.e. Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Syria).
What a racist frame Schlussel decides to paint. This incident happened the other day, and I didn’t even hear anything about it in the news. Charges aren’t even pending (although police are still investigating, per this report in a local newspaper: Canton Journal
Is it just me, or do many of the most repulsive of the Republicans just love to try and blame violence on Muslims without cause, and then when a lethal bomb is planted at a women’s clinic where abortions are performed, they are mum?
Pathetic.
Wigwam -
Yeah. Tristero over at Digby’s place rips Mansfield a new one. Definitely worth the read. Theses people are beginning to let the curtain slip and it ain’t pretty.
AZ Matt @ 170
He’s so reliable. I read George Will regularly (just to know what the other side was thinking) until I was about nineteen, when I was old enough to recognize that every one of his columns has at least one major flaw of logic that undermines his entire argument.
And nothing’s changed since 2004. I’m sure all those people would gladly vote for Bush again…
Isn’t it funny how Americans never “seem to like the government at least somewhat divided” when Republicans are in charge of everything? Kind of like how Google Trends shows a spike in the use of “bipartisan” right after the Dems took control of Congress.

Brits are pommies
In addition to Palestinian and Lebanese Muslims living in Dearborn, there are also a number of Iraqi Christians (Chaldeans) as well as Lebanese Roman Catholics.
Saddam’s secular government largely stopped sectarian violence.
A snipet of a BBC article on Iraqi Christians:
“Before the Gulf War in 1991, they numbered about one million, but that figure is now put at about 800,000 and falling.
Under Saddam Hussein, in overwhelmingly Muslim Iraq, some Christians rose to the top, notably Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz, and the Baathist regime kept a lid on anti-Christian violence.
But this started to change after the removal of Saddam Hussein and the US-led occupation of Iraq.
There has been a spate of attacks on Christian targets in Mosul, Baghdad and elsewhere in recent months. Many Christians have felt intimidated and left the country.”
Makes you wonder if our fundies realize that their support of the Iraq war has wrought havoc on Iraq’s Christians.
Nah. They’d never be able to put it together.

U.S. diplomats returning from Iraq with post-traumatic stress disorder
By Barbara Slavin, USA TODAY
WASHINGTON — U.S. diplomats are returning from Iraq with the same debilitating, stress-related symptoms that have afflicted many U.S. troops, prompting the State Department to order a mental health survey of 1,400 employees who have completed assignments there.
Larry Brown, the State Department’s director of medical services, said that as early as this month the department will e-mail questionnaires to employees who have been posted in Iraq.
ONE DIPLOMAT’S STORY: “All the work I did is worthless”
The surveys, to be completed anonymously, are intended to determine how many returning diplomats and civilian employees are suffering post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or other problems as a result of exposure to a war zone, Brown said.
State Department employees in Iraq seldom leave the capital’s heavily fortified Green Zone. Even there, though, rocket and mortar attacks are frequent and the sound of gunfire is constant. Suicide bombers have penetrated the zone on rare occasions, most recently on April 12.
The department was prodded to act by the American Foreign Service Association. It reported that some diplomats had difficulty adjusting after leaving.

I believe this administration has done that, particularly since we cut taxes. You know, most small businesses and self-employed people, people in your line of work, or many of them, are not corporations. They’ve sole proprietorships, or subchapter S corporations, or limited partnerships that pay tax at the individual income tax level.
And, therefore, when you cut taxes, we not only — individual rates, we’re not only cutting them on the people who work for you or work with you, we’re cutting them on you. And my attitude is the more money you have in your treasuries, the more likely it is you’ll be able to expand. The more incentive you have to buy a piece of equipment, the more likely it is you’ll buy one, which means that somebody is going to have to build it for you.
The best way to enhance pro-growth economic policies is to cut the taxes on the American people. And that’s exactly what we did. These taxes are set to expire. In my judgment, if Congress really wants to create a pro-growth attitude for a long time coming, they ought to make the tax relief we passed permanent. They ought not to let them expire. (Applause.)
My attitude is this about the budget: The best way to balance the budget is to keep taxes low, encourage growth, which enhances tax revenues, and be wise about how we spend money. I worry about the attitude, don’t worry, we’re just going to raise the taxes on some to balance the budget. No, they’ll raise the tax on some and figure out new ways to spend the money.
And we’re proving that pro-growth economic policies with fiscal discipline can work. And our budgets are shrinking [sic]. The best way to keep them shrinking is keep the economy growing and be wise about — and setting priorities with your money.
There’s other things we can do in Washington. We’ve got to make sure health care is affordable and available, without inviting the federal government to run the health care system. Got to do something about these junk lawsuits that I’m sure you’re concerned about. We’ve got to continue to invest in the nation’s infrastructure. We also need an immigration system that upholds the rule of law and treats people with respect. We need an immigration system that secures our borders and meets the needs of our economy. As I said in the speech down in Florida the other day, we need an immigration system without amnesty and without animosity. In other words, we need a comprehensive immigration reform.
….
First of all, Petraeus, General Petraeus is an expert on counterinsurgency, and his top priority is to help the Iraqi leaders — who, by the way, were elected by nearly 12 million of their citizens — secure their population. And the reason why is, is that this young democracy needed some time to make important political decisions to help reconcile the country. After a thorough review, we concluded the best way to help Iraq’s leaders to provide security was to send more troops into the nation’s capital, into the country; was to send reinforcements to those troops which were already there. And their job was to go after the extremists and radicals who were inciting sectarian violence. Their job was to help get Baghdad under control. And their job was to continue to train Iraqi forces for the day they can secure the country on their own.
Last week, General Petraeus came to Washington, and he updated me and he updated the Congress on the early stages of this new strategy — and I repeat, early stages. He reminded us that not all the reinforcements he’d requested have arrived, that it’s going to be at least until the end of this summer that he will know whether or not the new strategy has achieved successes.
And that means the strategy is in early stages. My view is the Congress and the country ought to give General Petraeus time to see whether or not this works. And it’s interesting, he goes up in front of the Senate and gets confirmed unanimously. And he said, I need more troops, during his testimony; send me more troops and I will go implement a new plan. They said, okay, fine, we confirm you. And yet there are some doubts in Washington whether or not they ought to send the troops.
The troops are going, the strategy is new, and the General said, let’s give it some time to work to see whether or not it’s successful, and I’ll be able to report back to the country by the end of this summer.
The most significant element of the new strategy is being carried out in the capital. The whole purpose is to secure the capital. My theory is, and it’s a good one, is that if the capital is in chaos, the country can’t — it’s going to be difficult for the country to survive.

The Rove e-mail subpoena is looking pretty strong.
Leahy is asking for RNC e-mails that he KNOWS exist – Fitzgerald got them as part of the Leak Investigation – which are presumably stored somewhere in DoJ.
So, this isn’t a fishing expedition and the e-mails aren’t covered by Executive Privilege – the subpoena should be enforceable for the collection of the evidence.
If Gonzo doesn’t hand over the documents, the Senate would almost have to impeach him.
Redshift @ 245
Redshift, I forgot about that one.
It always makes me furious when Republicans say stuff like, “we haven’t had a terrorist attack on our soil since 9/11″. Um, yes, we have. It’s all in how they choose to define a violent event versus a terrorist attack. The Anthrax mailings. The situation you mentioned. The abortion clinic bombings. But no, it’s more convenient to say “the Republicans have kept us safe” by discounting these things as not terrorist attacks, unless they can find Muslims to blame. Again, pathetic.

Gotta luv it every time Chimpy says “First of all, Petraeus, General Petraeus is an expert on counterinsurgency, …”
Per Petraeus’s book on the matter, we need four or five times as many troops as we’ve committed in order to have a reasonable chance of success, and at the “surge” levels we have only a one-in-four chance of success. Somehow, the chimp never mentions that.

Fucking surreal.
Canton Michigan is a republican stronghold through and through, it used to be very rural but now it is an upscale residential area run by mostly republicans in office. I doubt very much if there is any large “paki” population.
there is a certain amount of Indian and Middle eastern population present, mostly professional people involved with the Automotive and Medical professions.
Let’s not forget Cheney’s Halliburton dealing with Iran. Rumsfeld selling Saddam WMDs in the 80s for Raygun. Republicans love trading with the enemy!
