Headed to the big city — that's right, I'm headed to New York City. Why, you ask? To tape a Charlie Rose Show on Thursday. Taping got cancelled, but it was cancelled while I was on my flight, where the airline lost my luggage, and now I'm in NYC with no luggage and no show to do tomorrow. Looks like the show will be rescheduled at some point, so more details as I have them, but it looks like there will be a panel of bloggers — three on the left, three on the right — and I've been invited to be one of the six.
We'll be talking politics, Presidential possibilities, and a whole lot more. At some point. Will let everyone know when it will be broadcast.
I thought it might be fun to meet up with some FDL readers while I'm in NYC. Who wants to join me for a cuppa coffee?
Starbucks at 57th & Seventh
142 W. 57th Street
New York, New York 10019
Say around 5:00 pm ET today (Wednesday)? I'll be the redhead with the laptop…

Have fun!
I certainly wish I could have a cup of coffee with you and thank you for all your hard work at FDL!
No luggage? SHOPPING!!!
Can you ever make it to Chicago? It would be a treat to meet you and shake your hand.
We have Starbucks here too!
Planes, trains and automobiles. Have fun. Hope you can get in a ballet and a museum while you’re there.
He’d better be paying your airfare, Christy, for all the jerking around he’s been doing of you!
Wish I could be there to have a cuppa.
Instead, am down in Texas trying to straighten things out.
I’ll let you know if I succeed.
(grin)
Christy: If you need clothes, please email me. I have a friend on East 90th street….who may be in town.
cool — enjoy the trip!

full subpoena up shortly,

I highly recommend Crema for dinner. It’s in Chelsea, Manhattan. Very nice Mexican cuisine. I ate there last Wednesday evening. A local who’s great at finding such places put us on to it ; )

A total random “mistake” I`m sure. Maybe their dog ate their paperwork also.

I’m good at the moment, gang — the airline swore to me they’d get my luggage to me this evening. But anyone coming over for coffee is going to get the travel weary unable to change my clothes version of me. *g*
CHS- Oh my, nothing to do but shop! Mr Redd must be quaking in his boots….)
Christy!
You’d think they could have told you before you handed over your luggage & hopped on the plane, egad.
I trust they paid the airfare? Make the most of it. Have fun. Wish we could be there to meet you. ;->
Eureka at 14 — Some time, ask TeddySanFran about my shopping abilities…
Might as well make the best of it and do some sight seeing Christy!
Christy,
So sorry it got canceled leaving the peanut behind and all. I hope you find a way to enjoy your time there.

Sounds like fun. Each person should bring an item of clothing as an offering…. but then you’d need another suitcase….

Do you know who the other bloggers were supposed to be?
TRex also alluded last night that you might have something to say about Ms. Malkkkin…was this going to be it (although I wouldn’t call her a blogger…rather, I’d call her a wannabe!).
Oh darn! I live 5 minutes away from that Starbucks. Ugh, silly commitments that must be kept. I so wanted to meet one of my heroes. Grr….
I’m thinking about heading over to the Metropolitan Museum of Art for some quality time with some Monets and the Asian collection tomorrow. But then again, shopping does beckon…
At least I don’t have to worry about getting a blow-out for my hair now. *g*

Gates presser on cspan3 now: Forces will start feeling the money pinch here at home as funds are transferred overseas.
CHS — now that you’re in NYC, pls don’t go home before you take a jaunt up to BOS. JetBlue runs a good cheap shuttle between JFK and BOS (I should know, I just booked a couple tix for our next trip) and you can consult the optional FDL member map to see where we locals are. I’m betting that several lurker FirePups hereabouts would show up to buy you a cuppa and a nice hot meal before you head back to your beloved Mr. ReddHedd & Peanut. I personally offer chauffeur service plus the use of our spare bedroom. Least my wife and I can do for someone who Has Truly Made A Difference.
Knock ‘em dead on Charlie Rose, now! :)

“I thought it might be fun to meet up with some FDL readers while I’m in NYC. Who wants to join me for a cuppa coffee?”
Concerned but hopefully not a troll…With all of the wackos running around the web and the recent thread on another blog about “web stalkers”; maybe a better method for meeting other FDLers should be developed.
Christy – That’s my home town. I grew up a few blocks from the Met, great museum, highly recommended. MoMa is on W 57th too if you like modern art (I think it has reopened after the renovations, not sure.) On the west side of the park (W 82nd) is the American Museum of Natural History, also great, as is the adjacent planetarium if you’re into that.
Have a great time.
S.O.S. from MA @ 29
And I promise to buy you all the Lattes/Mochas you so desire!
I will be there in spirit. Get dumped in LA and you can stay with us.

Gates: have not discussed any compromise bill with the Hill, but would be happy to do so. Presser over now.

Enjoy the unexpected free time, Christy!

Please make a stop in Toronto some day.
We have an intersection in downtown Toronto with a Starbucks at each corner – one in every direction. Peter Ustinov called Toronto, “…like New york, run by the Swiss …”, to which I would also add, “A city in a garden.”
RonD @ 28
Hey, Gatesy! Your dodo boss vetoed the bill! Thus, the pinch (if there really is a pinch….)
I guess this means the only drudge you will see is in the bottom of your latte.
Uptown NYC chick is going to be bummed.
Note to Charlie Rose:
PAY HER AIRFARE, DAMMIT!
From CNN:
Yeah, right. I’m sure that OpSec is the only thing they’re worried about …
As long as you’re a tourist, try Cucina di Pesce in the Village for great Italian (very reasonably priced). And right around the corner you can see Blue Man Group.
I work in Manhattan, so if I get there first I will (quietly) shout “Zed.”

Frequent lurker, rare commenter. I work at “Talk Rad!o” at the Longacre Theater on 48th Street. If you want to see a show while you’re in town, you could do much worse than this one. If you decide to come on by tonight, drop me a note at the stage door. I’d love you buy a cup of coffee or maybe a beer after the show to thank you for the great work you do.
Hi, TSF! I thought that was noteworthy since it diectly contradicts something the WH said just the other day.
In NYC and no luggage?
Time to go shopping, my dear :)
CHS — enjoy the city, and don’t let Charlie talk over you!

Hey, RonD!
Gates must know everybody who works for him has a direct line to Murtha. Gates is often off his BushCo talking points, as when he announced the 15-month extended tours the day after Shrub said Democrats were hurting military families. That struck me as particularly disloyal to Dear Leader.
Not sure what that’s all about, or when Gates might actually break with Shrub publicly. Perhaps on the next veto?
Not going to make it from 500 miles away, but it sounds like fun.
5th Ave. and 59th St is where you can find FAO Schwartz, which is just the stop for assuaging Peanut absence guilt.
Christy, definitely follow your instincts and go to MOMA at 53rd between 5th and 6th. The renovations (finished about 2 years ago) were very well done. Instead of Starbucks, however, I would recommend the Coffee Pot on 9th Ave. and 49th Street. It’s been there for a long long time and is part of the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood. Lots of good restaurants in that area as well. Central Park is gorgeous right now – lots of crab apples and cherry trees in bloom – worth taking a stroll.
Oh, and I see Brad at 46 works at Talk Radio. Fantastic show – if you can go don’t miss out. Liev Schrieber is amazing.

TPM has a lot of good info on the USA firings. Here is a bit from Bud Cummins:
Elston rejected that notion and assured me that every replacement would have to be confirmed by the Senate. I told him if that was the case, then he had better gag Tim Griffin because Griffin was telling many people, including me, that officials in Washington had assured him he could stay in as USA pursuant to an interim appointment whether he was ever nominated or not. Elston denied knowing anything about anyone’s intention to circumvent Senate confirmation in Griffin’s case. He said that might have been the White House’s plan, but they “never read DOJ into that plan” and DOJ would never go along with it. This indicated to me that my removal had been dictated entirely by the White House. He said Griffin would be confirmed or have to resign. I remember that part of the conversation well because I then said to Elston that it looked to me that if Tim Griffin couldn’t get confirmed and had to then resign, then I would have resigned for nothing, and to that, after a brief pause Elston replied, “yes, that’s right.”

Christy if the film “Cats of Mirikitani” ” is showing in the neighborhood see it. (the film is about a homeless Japanese man in New York City)
This is one of the most compassionate, healing films that I have seen in a long time.
A double espresso for me please. I have asked lots of Starbucks workers what they get paid and if they have health insurance. From what I understand Starbucks started most of their employees out at around $7.00 an hour (this was three years ago that I was asking) That employees get full health insurance coverage after a year. At least this is what I heard from employees.

Ah…..god, I just got off the train FROM the city. Too tired to get back on and go back. Have a cup for me.
Wordsmith @ 82
Cummins seems to have a common sense approach. I grabbed this from his response to the Senate’s inquiry:
When a highly respected USA is removed abruptly and without explanation, what
impact does that have on other USAs and the AUSAs in your office? Answer:
Normal changes in leadership occur when a presidential administration is
changed over and also when USAs move on to other careers as judges, or back
to the private sector. These changes are tolerated by the career people in the
office and are often softened by the elevation of the First Assistant to serve in the
interim who knows the office and can provide continuity. It would be
detrimental to an office to absorb these changes too often. In the recent cases,
where it may appear that USAs were forced out, in some cases in response to
outside political pressure, there is clearly a negative impact on the morale of the
USAOs across the country because suddenly it appears that DOJ is not willing to
insulate the offices from such pressure. Where once the prosecutor thought that
pursuing a powerful local politician or politically connected businessman might
only expose him or her to some local and outside criticism/pressure, now the
prosecutor must also contemplate that the subject or target of the investigation
may actually be able to obtain the removal of the prosecutor. This is not a
healthy environment for prosecutors who must make hard decisions based solely
on the facts and the law, and not on the political implications. Such decisions
smell unfair, and will have a predictable impact on the attitude and morale of
everyone in the system. Firing a prosecutor for prosecuting the wrong person, or
not prosecuting someone in the other political party, or for not timing an
indictment around an election destroys the credibility that should be enjoyed by
the department as a whole. It is difficult to regain that credibility. The
professionals in the department are going to resent that because they earned
that credibility. Finally, USAs do not make these decisions about cases and
policy in a vacuum. Any successful USA is relying on the advice and counsel of
as many of the career people in the office as is possible. While you can have a
good USAO with a bad USA, and vice versa, it is fairly impossible to make public
statements about the “performance” of a particular USA without implicating the
performance of some or all of the career staff in the USAO who participated in
the decision making and policy development within the office. The resentment
will obviously be compounded where it is apparent that those criticisms have
been fabricated to protect the true agenda and agenda makers behind the
removals.
Keep in mind, these words are from a self admitted “political” republican.
STTP in Ohio @ 72: Your addition is fine by me. The longer that list is, the better.
Dangit, Christy, I live so close but there is no way I can make it into the city today by train. OTOH, there are a ton of NYC Kossacks. Why don’t you cross post at DKos?
Christy,
Have yourself a good ole time in New York!
Here’s hoping that there are no problems getting the luggage. On a visit to my daughter who lives in the city, my luggage was lost, and the airline found it. Trouble was the person who mistakenly picked up my luggage refused to return it to the airline until her luggage was found and delivered to her.
Bommer. She lived in CT. It took me the third day there to get it. Was lucky that I had a carry on bag with a few clothes, makeup, and such and could make do.

Christy, what, no parting gifts? The first Republican Presidential debate will take place at the Ronald Reagan Library tomarrow hosted on MSNBC. Is the debate taking place in a tomb (Reagan is buried there) an ominous symbol of the death of the party? I’m sure Reagan will be squirming in his grave as Nancy looks on.

Rats, I was visiting up there until yesterday!!
If you have an opportunity to go to the theatre, I highly recommend “Talk Radio.” Liv Schreiber is amazing. I would, however, recommend sitting further back than the first 10 rows. There’s quite a bit of smoking by the main character, so if that bothers you . . .
“The Corum Boy” is supposed to be good, and “Jersey Boys” gets great reviews, but after winning the Tony last year, it’s hard to get tickets.
Do NOT bother with “110 in the Shade,” even though it has Audra MacDonald. The play [book] is feeble.
“Frost/Nixon” is good, but not as good as it should be.
Unfortunately Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s play, “Jack Goes Boating,” closed Sunday. It was phenomenal.
Signing off, your own Frank Rich [former NYT theatre critic, now terrific political commentator]

Nougatine at 1 central park west has a great lunch prix fix if you want to try some Jean Georges Vongrichten’s French latida and not break the bank, reservations and all.
Hey Christy so nice meeting you in NYC. I thank you so much for all the work you do at FDL. I’ve learned an immense amount, since I found you guys during the Libby Trial. In fact I’m becoming something of a political junkie and my head is swimming with amazement at the gall of the folks in the WH. I knew they were bad, just hadn’t realized how very inbred and corrupt.
