Here it is, gang! The new Tori Amos video! It's a bit weird. Then again, saying a Tori Amos video is a bit weird is like saying that water is a bit wet. I like the song, but not quite as much as I love what I hope will be the second single, "Bouncing Off Clouds".
The personae in the video are characters cooked up by Tori to represent a modern pantheon of certain ancient goddesses. Pretentious? Mmmmmmmaybe. But it sure beats the fuck out of listening to someone like Britney Spears muse about their time in rehab or whatever. Today's pop-tarts are not a particularly weighty lot, to be sure.
Not that Tori was ever anybody's pop-tart.
Enjoy!

TRΣX!
woo-hoo my first Zed!!!!!
nice one CT
CTuttle @ 4
Congratulations! YOU deserve it!
Can’t sleep, so I thought I’d do a quick drive-by. Hi TRex and everyone!
Sweet, CT. Congrats.
Congrats CT
LoudounLib @ 7
Hi LoudounLib
Hey lolo, how is the zed queen? ;-)
Thanx Y’all, I’m usually a day late, mega-dollars short! :)
CT has lost his zedginity.
LoudounLib @ 6
Evenin’, cutie!
TRex @ 14
Back at ya dear, how’s things?
Hey TRex, Tori reminds me of a sultry J.J. Cale, similar texas funk!!! Similarily, old ZZ Top!!!
CTuttle @ 15
If that’s the goal, then I kind of wish the guitars were deeper and growlier. But then again, this is Tori’s attempt to re-establish a beachhead in American radio, so it can’t be too arty.
punaise @ 12
Earned my FDL Pup ears???
Looking at Marcy’s Oversight May Calendar post, looks like the next hearing isn’t until Thursday, when Comey is scheduled to tesify.
Gives me all day tomorrow to stock up on popcorn.
TRex,
Thanks so much. Love Tori Amos.
Oh, fine. Better than they were, actually. I spent the last week feeling very down and moody, but today has been the best day since it came on. I think this cloudburst is passing.
You guys, could you tell? I was trying to keep my depression from showing through in my work, but I wondered if anyone was noticing.
These are depressing times, TRex. I did not pick up on anything other than the reality of this mal-administration.
I couldn’t tell at all. Your writing was as dead-on and snarkolicious as always. But I’m glad the clouds are dispersing for you!
Why do ya think I was trying to fix you up with Mr. Helen?
I didn’t read anything between the lines, TRex.
Also – the recent New Yorker has a two-fer for you: Sasha Frere-Jones reviews new Tori Amos and Bjork albums. off to read it now.
LoudounLib @ 22
Thankee. Good to know. Each night, I was pulling up the “Write Post” screen and thinking that all I felt like writing was, “AAAAAAAAAARRRRRRGGGHHH!! I AM SO SAD AND ALL ALONE!!”
I got better.
punaise @ 24
Uh, link, please!
Okay late night experts. I have a blogging and journalism question for you all.
In today’s press conference the FDA declined to identify the names of the organizations that sold the 3.5 million chickens that ate contaminated feed from China. This happened in Feb. 2007.
The chickens have been processed and most likely consumed by humans.
I called two of the major poultry companies today (Perdue and Tyson) to ask them if they were the owners of some or all of those 38 poultry farms in Indiana that fed the bad feed to chickens.
Now as far as I know NO journalist has revealed who owned the farms, who processed the chicken or who purchased them. So if I find out the names of the company that fed the bad feed to the chickens, do I have an obligation to not reveal that info? Are the journalists working this story asking themselves this question?
What is the public’s right to know vs. the “there is nothing they can do about it, so why scare them” view point?
The owners of the 38 farms in Indiana (and some in Utah) that sold the chickens may have sold them to fast foods places, schools, grocery stores and hospitals.
If I find this info, should I hold it back because according to the FDA the risk to humans is low?
Why won’t the FDA really reveal the names? And, if no journalist reveals the names, should I?
Will I be accused of causing a panic? Destroying a company’s reputation for no good reason?
What if I find the name of the company that sold the chicken and they supplied it to schools? KFC? Should I reveal that info? Or is it pointless? What obligation does the FDA have to reveal (or not reveal) this kind of info?
What are the obligations of the press? How about bloggers who are acting as journalists?
I’d like your opinions.
Here is the transcript of the FDA press conference.
Notice that the Chicago Trib did ask the question and were not told the names and given the reasons why.
The WaPo has this review of the new Tori…ymmv
TRex @ 27
It’s in the hard copy version. I’ll check online.
If toxins have made it into our food supply, we have a right to know. If you get that information, you publish it far and wide and don’t look back.
My two cents.
LoudounLib @ 23
Here Here!
You even said it yourself, TRex…this is the first night after some kick ass nights of comments in the 400s. So smile those 18″ teeth of yours.
Hope you’re feeling better now.
Is Tori from the Philippines? Is she a member of M.I.L.F. (Moro Islamic Independence Front)? I can’t sleep either.
Couldn’t tell anything from the posts. In comments I thought you sounded tired. I was hoping you were worn out from exciting sexual trysts with a fabulous honey. Sadly, no, eh?
Glad you’re feeling back on track, the walking does a world of good.

OT- I really think we should give Shrub a two month advance on his allowance. All the while, we wait patiently for the hemoraghing to run its full course, wherein, the patient is rendered comatose! The scandals are amassing at lightspeed these days! Just get out of the way of this runaway train!!! Sun Tzu stated that: “With patience at the riverbank, You shall see your enemy’s head float by”!!!! IIRCC!
LoudounLib @ 28
Whatever. The Washington Post thinks Michelle Malkin is a “journalist”, so anything they say is highly suspect. It’s a NeoCon rag, now. Or at least according to Chris Matthews.
If toxins have made it into our food supply, we have a right to know. If you get that information, you publish it far and wide and don’t look back.
Is there a need to know? Yes. Is the need to know of such importance that it over-rides any protections of privacy. Yes.
Publish it, Spocko.
TRex @ 37
Yeah, I thought it was a rather mean-spirited writeup. Maybe if J. Freedom DuLac had written the review it might have been different!
All in all though I’d rather read the WaPo than the WashTimes.
(((TRex)))
No, I couldn’t tell you’d been down. I’d have sent props sooner. I think your late nite posts are fabulous, and really something special. I think having to have an extra post to handle all the replies says it all.
Late nite with TRex has it’s own special Karass…

punaise @ 35
Merci punaise.
Liked the cartoon too!
spocko @ 28
Spocko I only eat Foster Farms and Zacky I think both companies are in CA. Please keep us posted. I saw this link at the FDA website today and left it in a previous thread here at the lake. I ate chicken today but I think I am going to give it up for good.
I gave up beef, dairy, nutr*sweet, sacharine, spl*nda, salt, diet sodas and anything processed 4 years ago. Chicken is next.
lolo
I am also awake for no particular reason. What’s new?
tw3k @ 42
No transcript but it is Pennsylvanians for Effective Government Conference. It’d be prime for a pick-apart.
Texas Betsy @ 46
Must be something in the air. Maybe the full moon?
Thanks TRex, here is what CNN said about this;
Good to hear, but I’m not saying that they should be ruled out. As I’ve been following this VERY closely I have found out that companies who think that they have not been putting tainted Chinese gluten in the products actually HAVE been. For example, a pet food brand found out that the manufacturer WAS adding Chinese rice protein to their food. It wasn’t on the label but it was happening.
All I have to do is make a few calls and find out who owns those 38 chicken farms. It might still be Tyson or Perdue because they didn’t know it was happening, it might be someone else.
I’m very troubled that the FDA has made the decision that the dilution factor is working in our favor, but they aren’t mentioning the accumulation factor. Its what they DON’T say that I pay attention too.
And the FDA is really basing this on guess work, they have no studies on what will happen to humans eating this chicken, we are all unintentional guinea pigs. That pisses me off.
punaise @ 34
Great stuff. Gosh, that Sasha chick can write.
(Heh, I know SFJ is a guy. That was a li’l joke.)
tw3k @ 41
It’s only fair. We’ve spent enough time bashing him.
Texas Betsy @ 46
OK, try this: A little insight into me (and not entirely OT).
Sunday, I was looking for a parking space on my street. I found one on the opposite side of the street, near the corner. A car driven by a pretty young woman turned the corner and slowed by the space.
Whoa, she’s cute, I thought.
I hope she doesn’t take my space.
Hey! That’s my wife!
TRex @ 51
I can see why, heh.
Awwwww.
TRex @ 54
Pathetic on so many levels.
Is the moon full tonight? That would explain a lot.
Spocko – first, make damn sure you are right. Second, give them an opportunity to self announce; but make it an extremely short window, else they will slap some type of restraining order BS on you. Give them only long enough to do the right thing, but not to stop you.
Hitting the wall here, guess my drive-by is over. And my cat is telling me that it’s well past time to hit the rack. G’night all, and sweet dreams!
LoudounLib @ 57
I’m right behind you.
Good night, everyone. Be well. Be happy. But most of all, be here tomorrow night!
Spocko, thanks for your great work.
I hope you will publish all (verified) info that comes your way about specific exposures.
Without information, people can’t make informed choices.
Off hand I can’t think of any medical conditions forciing people to adopt a 100% chicken diet, so this is a situation where people really do have a choice.
So – FWIW – I hope you publish everything.
Thanks for your work.
I believe the full moon zenith will be at 3:22 PDT. In Scorpio.
My error. Sorry, the moon is full in Scorpio at 3:09 AM PDT.
For the dead cats and dogs and the contaminated chickens and hogs, America can thank St Ronnie.
Mike Malloy read a letter tonight by a retired army general telling GWB that he NEVER listens to the generals on the ground and he ought to start. Been looking for the text. No luck. Anyone seen it?
Nite-Nite TRex & LDL!!! Scorpio, aah, randy moon!!!
That video? Double meh. Just not very interesting.
I was in California when St. Ronnie dumped the chronically mentally ill onto the streets with out enough programs for the community to deal with them.
And when Republics complain about the crazy homeless they forget that St. Ronnie made it all possible!
spocko @ 49
Overview on FDA and food safety -
Although good folk still work at FDA, teh people with the power to hurt industry are almost all political appointees. Since Reagan (and continuing under Clinton) though today, FDA food safety has been hollowed out from within.
On food safety matters, I trust the Organic Consumers Association far more than the FDA.
[ps - though I’m about to crash tonight, I’m happy to help find more sources (or even research teh medical stuff directly) if useful. my email is kmurphy gnat riseup dowt net.]

Dear Mr. President,
Today, in your veto message regarding the bipartisan legislation just passed on Operation Iraqi Freedom, you asserted that you so decided because you listen to your commanders on the ground.
Respectfully, as your former commander on the ground, your administration did not listen to our best advice. In fact, a number of my fellow Generals were forced out of their jobs, because they did not tell you what you wanted to hear — most notably General Eric Shinseki, whose foresight regarding troop levels was advice you rejected, at our troops’ peril.
The legislation you vetoed today represented a course of action that is long overdue. This war can no longer be won by the military alone. We must bring to bear the entire array of national power – military, diplomatic and economic. The situation demands a surge in diplomacy, and pressure on the Iraqi government to fix its internal affairs. Further, the Army and Marine Corps are on the verge of breaking – or have been broken already – by the length and intensity of this war. This tempo is not sustainable – and you have failed to grow the ground forces to meet national security needs. We must begin the process of bringing troops home, and repairing and growing our military, if we are ever to have a combat-ready force for the long war on terror ahead of us.
The bill you rejected today sets benchmarks for success that the Iraqis would have to meet, and puts us on a course to redeploy our troops. It stresses the need for sending troops into battle only when they are rested, trained and equipped. In my view, and in the view of many others in the military that I know, that is the best course of action for our security.
As someone who served this nation for decades, I have the utmost respect for the office you hold. However, as a man of conscience, I could not sit idly by as you told the American people today that your veto was based on the recommendations of military men. Your administration ignored the advice of our military’s finest minds before, and I see no evidence that you are listening to them now.
I urge you to reconsider your position, and work with Congress to pass a bill that achieves the goals laid out above.
Respectfully,
Major General Paul D. Eaton, USA, Retired
spocko @ 67
You can say that again.
California… today was the 15th anniversary of Rodney King’s “Can’t we all just get along” question during the riots. And today, they fired rubber bullets at families and swung batons at them.
lolo @ 45
spocko asked an important question or three re the FDA press conference – What are the obligations of the press? How about bloggers who are acting as journalists?
I’d like your opinions.
Your obligation to yourself and your family is to eat as little animal products which have gone through the process as possible. spocko’s doing his or her part.
Over half the animal products we eat I obtain myself – fish, clams, sea cucumbers and birds.I get moose in trade for fish. Another 25 percent is obtained from people who raise it themselves locally. The remaining 20 percent comes from the supermarket, and I’d like to eliminate that. When our son goes off to college, the amount of animal products we consume might go down enough so we don’t have to buy any questionable stuff at all. Can’t wait!
Yeah, I realize that doggies living in the city can’t do what has become my routine over the past 34 years. Part of why I came here.
TRex – loved the latenight essay!
I was just at swampland and Ana Marie Cox has an article about Mitt Romney his favorite book is “Battlefield Earth ” by L Ron Hubbard. On a weird hunch from my heavy metal days I googled Aleister Crowley and Scientology and well there are all kinds of weird links that a Presidential Candidate, a Mormon or heck a sane person does not want to be associated with. Aleister Crowley is the Black Magic guy in the Ozzy Osbourne song. The Republican hardcore 30%er base I take it still hates Satan worst than Liberals I trust?

I had never noticed that first term, second term cycle before, spidey.
things come undone @ 72
yeah. imagine that – a presidential candidate that believes in secret societies. next thing you know, we’ll have a president who’s actually in one.
Here ya go, spidey:
…now lets not forget the 20 year presidential death cycle, folks. Most US presidents elected in years divisible by 20 have died in office. S 1840 Harrison who dies in his first term
1860 Lincoln Second Term
1880 Garfield First Term
1900 McKinley Second Term
1920 Harding First Term
1940 FDR Fourth Term (but 2nd term counting from 1940 election)
1960 JFK First Term
1980 Reagon (almost dead, tho some say brain dead)
2000 GW Bush ?????
Notice the pattern within the pattern – first term then second term

Whatever gets people to listen, y’know? Especially in that market, which hasn’t had any good radio since the demise of WHFS.
Recorded music is, after all, a product, that must be marketed and sold in order for the company to recover its investment and for the artist to eat.
I don’t think, for example, that Liz Phair has any regrets about allowing that little clip from “Extraordinary” to be used in ESPN’s promo spots for the women’s basketball tournament a few years back — it got her heard by hundreds of thousands of people that she had no other way of reaching. Some of them got curious enough to buy the disc, and thereby became fans. Seems to me to be quite the win-win deal.
TeddySanFran @ 96
It’s not at all clear that Brown will be an improvement over Blair. And that “poodle” crack is a grossly unfair over-simplification. Set Iraq aside and evaluate the rest of Blair’s accomplishments, and no fair-minded evaluator will fail to conclude that he kicked ass.
..sorry for the delay…mr paws just came in and presented me with an ancent Arthur Rackham first edition with 36 plates…oooooo
Political parties do have charts and they are erected on the day the party was incorporated or officially begun…I have never seen these charts but I’d be willing to search around for them

I’m in North Western Pennsylvania. Do you mean about the porcupine?
I’m sorry, tw3k, my second question was regarding your moniker.
Ah, just my old quake nick. I was always “tweaking” my config file. dumb name but kinda stuck.
Thanks for explaining. I try to figure out the personalized license plates I see when out and about. Could not come up with anything for yours.
yeah, it’s a 1337 nick :P

I’m in the Santa Cruz Mountains, 13 miles up the San Lorenzo river from Santa Cruz, in Boulder Creek, CA.
Has anyone seen this? UFO in China
Here’s some fuckery for ya:
According to tomorrow’s NYT, our Gubmint is alarmed by the lack of ways it has to screen British subjects of Pakistani origin, and is so bent out of shape by this that they are seriously considering ending the visa waiver for U.K. citizens.
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05…..in.html?hp
Please tell me this isn’t happening. This will inevitably set off a wave of retaliatory, tit-for-tat revocations of visa waivers, starting with the EU and the Swiss. People whose careers depend on being able to travel internationally on short notice (like, for example, me) are getting screwed simply because our government is too flipping stupid to solve what seems like a relatively simple problem.
Ugh.
Just dropping in late to see what’s happening here
sounds nice Suzanne. i bet the climate is nice.
tw3k, it is a temperate rain forest but we’ve only gotten 26″ this year – last year we got 75″. dry times ahead for california i fear.
Hey, TRex & Firepups,
I think an excellent upgrade in FDL would be to copy an idea from dKos:
This would suit FDL even better than DailyKos, which has a more 24/7 cycle. Your regular Late Night feature would be a nice time to acknowledge and raise up the best “comments of the day,” for those who simply do not have time to read all of the comments on all of the threads.
This project could be aided by some process whereby other readers could “nominate” a comment for consideration for inclusion in the “Comments of the Day” feature.
This would be a VERY valuable service, and I’d be willing to put money on it.

Hey, SteveA, I just took a cherry cobbler out of the oven to cool.
Suzanne @ 116
I don’t doubt that, seems to be the trend, even around here.
Bob Schacht @ 117
interesting idea bob. the comments would some sort of rating system tho.
Suzanne @ 118
Oh man, that sounds good.
What kind of wine goes well with a cherry cobbler…perhaps some champagne?
As I wrap things up for the night, I’m watching the rebroadcast of the SSCI hearing on Tuesday on FISA. Jay Rockefeller’s opening statement drew attention to the revisions to FISA that are being proposed.
He drew attention to the fact that committee requests for two key documents have been ignored by the Administration.
One of the more odious features of the proposed revision is a blanket(?) immunity be granted to violations of FISA from 9/11 to a period after the adoption of the law. I think this is a truly awful proposal. We need an FDL front page article about this, as well as to other matters raised by yesterday’s hearing. The SSCI hearing has been doing a lot behind closed doors, and this is its first public hearing, I think. We need more sunlight on this!!!
Bob in HI
SteveA, I wish but I’m saving that particular treat for when my little cottage by the creek in the redwoods sells.
Suzanne @ 123
You could save the really expensive stuff for the home sale, while still enjoying some less costly California bubbly, like Domaine Chandon,
Bob Schacht @ 122
I think we need a lot of sunlight on that.
tw3k @ 125
I second that.
That is my personal fav champagne, Steve. Spent some wonderful hours up at their winery in Napa Valley.
Suzanne @ 127
Wonderful!
Me & Ms. Audio actually drink…are you ready for this…Cooks Brut!
Great deal, very drinkable.
Bob@122, I agree that a whole lot of disinfectant is necessary. Levin tried to pin them down on procedures, and there was a whole lotta hemming and hawing by the panel, these guys are sleezebags!!!
Domaine Chandon Napa Valley Brut is very reasonably priced and very drinkable. Of course, I tend to think all champagne is very drinkable.
I like cabernet :P

The cracks are are already showing as Blair prepares to go. There’s a Guardian interview this a.m.(sorry I’m too OLD to learn to link but Google Guardian Unlimited)with Geoff Hoon, Defence Minister at the time of the invasion.
Three biggies as to the reasons for the mess.
“What did we miss? I think we missed Cheney.” Oh yesss
“I think we probably saw it in a different way. I think we felt that a lot of the Ba’ath people were first and foremost local government people, civil servants- they weren’t fanatical supporters of Saddam.” Do you see a sort of pattern here?
On WMD “I’ve been present at a number of meetings where the intelligence community was fixed, and looked in the eye and asked are you aboslutely sure about this? And the answer came back “Yes, absolutely sure”.” When you think about it there can only be one reason. Back to point one?

I went to HS in Riverside, and one year of community college…a loooong time ago.
This is a pretty good album. Downright great in comparison to the last two. The guitars and drums got a whole lot better from the blandness I remember from the past several years. Overall, the album has more of a roadhouse bar vibe than is usual for Tori, with some of the songs reminiscent of old ZZ Top and George Thoroughgood.
Here’s the link to the Guardian Interview with Hoon

yet another shining example of how the administration works.
Okay, stupid question time. I have a little post-it note stuck to my PC saying there’s a hearing at 10am Wednesday that I wanted to tune in to. Unfortunately, I didn’t note what the hearing was (House, Senate, Judiciary, Oversight, whatever), so I’m not sure where to point my browser tomorrow morning. I did look at the House and Senate hearings pages and did not see any likely candidates, and I couldn’t find the post Marcy did a few days ago with the list of interesting-sounding hearings for May. Help? (I’m going to be pulling up the hearing with less than 3 hours sleep, so knowing exactly where to go will save me exhausted confusion tomorrow.) Thanks!

Some fear that The Decider may decide not to leave office on 1/20/09, e.g. Naomi Wolf and Justin Raimondo. IMHO, this is a very real possibility that needs to be dicussed.
I really don’t get this song. Why does Tori Amos want to fuck herself? That’s what she’s saying, you know.

As for TRex wondering if we knewing he was fighting the blues–I kept thinking music clips instead of regular posts showed some sort of malaise, but they were wonderful. The selections were pensive. So yes, I felt the TRex blues a bit when Late Night came up, and noted it to myself.
If shooter croaked would that qualify?
David Greenberg in the NYT had something behind the firewall that I’ve dragged out into the light of day, called “In Nixon’s Tricks, Rove’s Roots and a Blueprint for Bush.” Enjoy.

heh, I’m in the 8% crowd with Ron Paul :D
I didn’t listen to the music, but the visuals did nothing for me.. same old MTV stuff…
I don’t listen to most contemporary “pop” music… too much rubbish to wade through… I stick to more musical music and classics…
Thats the only Tori Amos song I have ever liked.
TRex, I with you. I like Tori’s crazy eccentricity. Who would’ve thought a preacher’s daughter could write such provactive naughty stuff?
I hate linking to VH1, but I found this article, “Tori Amos Forms Anti-Bush Posse By Mutating Into Greek Goddesses”:
wow
I really like that video AND that song.
I did wardrobe on the ‘Some Kind of Fairytale’ video. Not a great video. Not a great song, but then I’m not a big TA fan.
I really like that song
thanks, TRex
