Speaking of losing control of the message:
On the April 30 edition of XM Radio's The Bob Edwards Show, Washington Post columnist David Broder asserted that it was "really doubtful" President Bush would be able "to salvage something that would look like a victory in Iraq." Broder made this statement four days after he attacked Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) for what he called Reid's "ineptitude," because of, as he wrote in his April 26 Post column, Reid's assertion that the Iraq war "is lost." As Media Matters for America noted, in that column, Broder pointed to Reid's "war is lost" remark to compare him to embattled Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales and accuse him of engaging in "inept discussion[s] of the alternatives in Iraq" and of not being "a man who misses many opportunities to put his foot in his mouth." Further, after discussing Democratic strategist Paul Begala's recent column on The Huffington Post, in which he wrote that "Broder, of course, is a gasbag," host Bob Edwards noted, "[W]e're in the world of the blogs and this stuff spreads so fast." Broder responded: "I am not a fan of the blogs, and the blogs are not fans of mine."
Au contraire. Without this kind of self-annointed media elite gibberish we'd have damn little to write about. Keep it up, Dean. You're increasingly becoming what's known as "easy post fodder."

Ya Broder needs to retire.
The way I deal with Mr. Broder is… I don’t.
Jane! Congratulations (I guess) for being spotlighted on FOX. The Times they are A Changing!
Put Broder back in the fridge, it smells like he’s getting sour.
-GSD
I wonder if Broder is getting tired of all the negative comments his columns receive. It has to shoot holes in his ego… or maybe not.
I see wingnut heads exploding all over the place. Sean Hannity is just plain exploding!
A pundit is, in contemporary English, someone who offers mass-media opinion, analysis or commentary on a particular subject area, (most typically political analysis, the social sciences or sport), on which they are presumed to be knowledgeable. As the term has been increasingly applied to popular media personalities lacking special expertise, however, it can be used in a derogative manner. Pundit is also a slang term for politically biased people pretending to be neutral.
David S. Broder (born September 11, 1929) is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, author, television talk show pundit, and university professor.
Why does edwards keep giving this tool air time? Oh yea a couple of inside the beltway Kewl Kids Klubbers swapping stories
Keep it up, Dean. You’re increasingly becoming what’s known as “easy post fodder.”
Broder has become low-hanging fruit. shamelessly borrowing from the dean of reggae, here’s my message to Broder:
“Get up. Stand up. Stand up, for you’re ripe.”
Go Jane. Broder is now just an old DC gasbag now. I remember him from when I was a kid. Lived in the same neighborhood. He claimed to be a liberal back then but he got GOP teflon fairy dust in his eyes during the Reagan administration. Thought RR was such a nice guy. Hasn’t been the same since. I wonder if the Post gives retirement compensation for GOP fairy dust infections.
When I come into work in the morning, and Broder has a stupid column in the WaPo, I like seeing how many pages of comments there are, all calling out Broder for being an idiot. I’m not snarking–its really a reassuring way to start the day.
Wait a minute. You updated your blogroll!
Jane,
Whatever your thing is about Broder, how about Broder and Tenet together or how about a general failure of elites or how about how did Tenet EVER become a person of influence? Well, look no farther than the Clintons.
If there’s a Broder FanClub, I want to join!
It’ll need to be a Second-Hand Auxiliary, though, as I am no longer medically permitted to read his work in the original. But I adore the analyses of his work. Foser’s excellent cross-decade takedown is but one example. I’m not sure I’ve ever read a Media Matters column that goes back to 1969 for its data points.
Please don’t retire, Dean Broderella! Anyone who can get the entire Senate Democratic Caucus on the same page (incuding CFL!) serves a valuable purpose in illustrating the decadence and decline of DeeCee Courtier Society.
sorry for the typo, on=no
From Begala’s “gasbag” piece:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/…..46923.html
Ripened AND rotted.
Broder will soon go the way of Carville.
Broder had Vietnam wrong too. Gene McCarthy used to refer to him as “the pinhead.” New recipe for the overfed conventionally wise: “Duck a la Broder.” Namely, sitting.
So why DID the cough “Dean ” change his mind about Bush not being able to “salvage something that would look like victory in Iraq” after he attacked Harry Reid for saying the same thing? Oh wait the Senate Democrats got Holy Joe to sign a letter of support for Reid and the blogs called the “Dean ” on his bull. We forced Dean to do a 360 on his postion! Next time we make him say our NAME!
Speaking of gasbags…Lieberman: ‘Bloggers Have Added Another Dimension of Vituperation Toxicity’ To Politics
TeddySanFran @ 15
Yes, that MM piece totally ROCKED.
The ‘tools’ are breaking along with the machine. It’s going to be glorious good fun to watch.
And, to answer a previous question, “Anybody want to start a pool – Wolfowitz or Abu, who takes a trip to Pink Slip City first?”
Wolfowitz, hands down. Nobody cares about ‘justice’ but the right wing is repleat with those who care about money!
things come undone @ 20
Yup — Dean Broderella is a carousel. If you hold a view, he will eventually propound it, thus appearing to agree with your view. But that is not a victory, just as a stopped clock, right twice daily, is not in working order.
There seems to be another one of those emergent media memes
[hey, that’s almost as good as nattering nabbobs of negativism]
about “civility”. See today’s WaPo about fearful female bloggers. Despite the fact that the documented threats seem to be from the right against the left, the whole story gets pureed into a “angry bloggers” mess.
Jane -
I just saw this on ThinkProgress (and haven’t checked to see whether anyone has already mentioned this on the previous thread):
Lieberman: ‘Bloggers Have Added Another Dimension of Vituperation Toxicity’ To Politics
Just for the under-35 crowd.
Jane, Stop this crazy thing!
I love the t-shirt idea.
Regretably Mr. Broder is not alone
I blame Tim Russert for over reaching
Broder was born in the first year of the Hoover administration. The world passed him by a long time ago.
Bashing this knucklehead is getting to be too easy… you know, like the Gonzo/baby seal thing.

People are talking about him. I think he sees that as being relevant.
oddball @ 7
I think they sound really stressed. I have to think that this is not simply because they are dealing with “cognitive dissonance” that relates to the failures of their Boy Wonder.
Rather I think that they are stressed about something else…this is the way people act when they might be on a list of a prostitute (ahem, “escort”) service and they know its gonna come out soon.
Anyone have a list of those commenttors and politicians who have recently “exploded” publicly?
My guess…on the list!
Or who have “resigned unexpectedly”…on the list.
Or who have suddenly dropped from the public eye…on the list.
Wow Jane, you’re on a roll today ;) … what’s Fox news? Now that I get most of my news online (from sources that heve been proven correct over the last few years) I don’t even watch TV news and the talking head gasbags any longer. I prefer my snark with actual facts mixed in!
On Civility, George Bush’s Inaugural Speech, Jan 20, 2001. Hard to know whether to laugh…or cry.
Poor Dean Broder, he’s ending his career about as nobly as Uncle Junior on the Sopranos.
His only hope for one last shot at relevence is to turn up on the “list of John’s” that’s about to hit D.C.
He can push the myth……”not much of a writer anymore but he’s hung like pepper mill”.
Good night sweet Broder.

Again I say unto HoJo: vomitrocious.
these people are worse than…argh!
Thank god blogging has helped to deprogram the american people from these creepish cult leaders. One woman in the audience was brave enough to ask (paraphrasing) when DOES public opinion count? How CAN we move our elected officials to action?
They so gently condescended to say public opinion is just ONE category of information they take into account when forming their own opinions and get things done. They even read their email!
gag.
“I am not a fan of the blogs, and the blogs are not fans of mine.”
Amazing! Broder finally said something that smacks of truth!
25 years I’ve been waiting for this, and it finally happened!
Jane, to be attacked by Sean Hannity is so a badge of honor. This is almost as cool as Daniel Schoor being on Nixon’s enemies list. You will never need any other validation. I’m jealous-I wish I could say or do something that would make Sean Hannity attack me!
Bob Schacht @ 37
I thank Kucinich.
Along with the crime analogies for the Bush crowd, my personal fave is The Unforgiven. Gene Hackman’s character and his sweet-n-low porch swing dream…outlaw preening as sheriff. That says ‘most everything about Bush.
It took the town whores to bring ‘em to justice.
And William Munny to deliver it. Ready for our metaphorical Eastwood….

I used to have a rat terrier named Mr. Jetson.
Assuming the 2008 election is not stolen and the Dem candidate wins, I hope the first thing he/she does is strip FOX of their WH press credentials. They are the PR wing of the RNC-treat them as such.

It’s called “spice”, Joe, and you’ve got indigestion ……
OT, but did anyone else catch the “Today” show this morning? “Where In The World Is Matt Lauer” started this week, and I was wondering how much Boeing paid for that 3 hour commercial!
Then again, Matt did say their planes use GE engines.
O/T Israeli commission on the Lebanon War regarding PM Olmert:
The prime minister made up his mind hastily, despite the fact that no detailed military plan was submitted to him and without asking for one…
Also, his decision was made without close study of the complex features of the Lebanon front and of the military, political and diplomatic options available to Israel.
All of these add up to a serious failure in exercising judgment, responsibility and prudence….
Israel’s government in its plenum failed in its political function of taking full responsibility for its decisions.
It did not explore and seek adequate response for various reservations that were raised, and authorised an immediate military strike that was not thought-through and suffered from over-reliance on the judgment of the primary decision-makers.
Sound like someone else we know?
Prairie Sunshine @ 35
Oh, didn’t you know? HoJo says Americans are sick of this divisive language, harassment, attacking etc and…it’s the blogs’ fault, not bushco! Way to go Joe!
Boy that flip-flop was fast: Broder: Victory in Iraq ‘really doubtful.’
See, it’s so tacky to tell the truth if you’re not speaking from up there on Mount Olympus, like the Dean.
The great unwashed masses say the war is lost? Pish posh!
Right now on Blitzer’s show, someone just said the Democrats are crazy to talk about impeachment, that it “steps on their message…”
In my area, people like to hear Murtha and others talk about impeachment. A lot.
Forge on up to a new thread
Jane keeps ‘em coming with a new thread.

it can go on his tombstone ……
Reid just pushed the Overton Window across, and now Broder can’t see anything any more.
The blowback on his Harry Reid commentary must have caught Broder by surprise. The easy target turned out to be a booby trap. No one could have expected such a spirited resistance. (ahem)
Broder reminds me of Calvin Coolidge coming out of retirement to lecture on sticking to republican principles in 1932, to tepid response.
But unlike Broder, Coolidge realized his day had passed. He told a friend “I feel I am no longer fit for these times” before he passed away.
Broder should entertain the wisdom of retirement before his entire reputation is pissed away. Wonder if the calls from Timmeh will keep coming?

Also from Froomkin today:
Recall, please, that Karl Rove was this year’s NYT guest, and it was at the NYT table that Laurie David and Sheryl Crow were insulted by Rove. And it was the NYT’s MoDo who, when asked about hosting Rove, replied, “I don’t get to pick the guests anymore.”
This quote
was at the top of the previous post. Broder’s got it going in reverse: no one’s fighting him, a few people are laughing at him, and pretty soon, he’ll be pretty much ignored.

Is that “over-reaching” or “reach-around”?
In other Incoherent news:
HOT DISH IN-COMING!
My friend Val Holley (author of an excellent book on Mike Connelly writes:
Shorter David Broder: “You goddamn kids get off my lawn. Go on, get off my lawn, or I’m gonna call your parents. You think I don’t know who your parents are? Well, i do and they’re a bunch of rotten commies for raising rotten commie kids like you. When I was a boy, we walked six miles up-hill in both directions to school, and whether we were late or on time we got a beating and we liked it because it warmed us up.
Do I have to go load my shotgun with rock salt? I told you damn kids, GET OFF MY LAWN!”

I never listen to Hannity- or Limbaugh- or any of the pretenders. They aren’t worth the time.
I DO read Broder. Sometimes I agree with him- often I don’t.
The truth is probably that Broder doesn’t have the faintest idea what should be done about Iraq. He’s figured out that we aren’t going to experience anything that looks like winning- but he can’t allow himself to imagine anything that looks like losing. He doesn’t have a clue- and neither does most of the country.
What exactly does it mean to say, “I’m not a fan of the blogs”. The “blogs” aren’t like sports or bird watching or something that you just don’t much care about or pay attention to. The “blogs” are multifaceted, of course. But more than that they are – in this day and age – a substantial source of news and opinion. For Broder to say that he is not a fan of the blogs is the same as any reporter/journalist saying that he doesn’t read the news, he/she just reports it. No wonder he is in such caveman territory…and no wonder that he constantly proves that to be the case.
the main problem is, none of these MSM guy/gals can just passively accept the latest WH pap because no one working in DC has any credibility, so writing anything is a huge crapshoot when you realize you actually have to stand by what you have pundit-ated, opined upon, you know what i mean.
pretty soon, the only story they WILL be certain of is that bloggers have made punditry interesting again.
now instead of the “dean” and everyone else, we have everyone else. must be very jarring for them, have some patience. they’ll find an issue anchor in some sex story, whether gay or with prostitutes or more baby daddy questions.
Broder should have retired a few years ago. He could have gone out with warm feelings and genuine accolades all around for his long and illustrious career. Now he’s just an embarrassment.
I KNOW WHY BRODER WENT AFTER REID.
Broder was planning to showcase his very own Cronkite Moment in a week or two. Maybe he was going to call it “The War Is Lost.”
Then Reid stole his thunder.
Multiple choice question:
David Broder sleeps with
A. Richard Nixon’s skeleton
B. Richard Nixon’s framed photograph
C. 18 minutes of loose tape swirling around his head in a feverish nightmare of helicopters in Saigon
Broder has been presiding over a DC press establishment that has long ago distanced itself from the public interest. Broder et al live in a bubble, no less protective than the one W inhabits. That they get called out on a regular basis by the left (unheard of in times past) is as shocking to them as it is novel. In his his latest rant aginst Reid, Broder is inhabiting the space of the likes of Limbaugh and Hannity. That he continues to insist that his lies are true is compelling evidence that he is becoming a mouthpiece for an increasingly irrelevant agenda.
That this man is admired by the DC press tells you all you need to know about how broken our beltway media is.
He represents a “target-rich” environment, however, when it comes to blogswarms like the one he experienced last week.
When will these people realize that they are dealing with the American people, not some fringe lefty group? They literally boggle the mind.
I can’t decide if Broder reminds me of Henry from the comic stip “Henry” or Harold from Harold and the Purple Crayon.
