Okay, Bush Gang — just TRY and call THIS guy a traitor!
In case y’all missed it over the weekend, General William Odom — Ronald Reagan’s Director of the National Security Agency — called for Bush to sign the Democratic legislation that sets a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq.
From The Gavel, Speaker Pelosi’s blog:
General William Odom Delivers Democratic Radio Address on Iraq
April 28th, 2007 by Karina
“To put this in a simple army metaphor, the Commander-in-Chief seems to have gone AWOL, that is ‘absent without leave.’ He neither acts nor talks as though he is in charge. Rather, he engages in tit-for-tat games…I hope the President seizes this moment for a basic change in course and signs the bill the Congress has sent him. I will respect him greatly for such a rare act of courage, and so too, I suspect, will most Americans.”
- Lieutenant General William E. OdomLieutenant General William E. Odom, U.S. Army (Ret.) delivered the Democratic Radio Address this morning. General Odom has served as Director of the National Security Agency and Assistant Chief of Staff for Intelligence, the Army’s senior intelligence officer. In his address, General Odom discusses why he believes President Bush should sign the conference report on the Iraq Accountability Act. Listen>> (transcript follows)
Good morning, this is Lieutenant General William E. Odom, U.S. Army, retired.
I am not now nor have I ever been a Democrat or a Republican. Thus, I do not speak for the Democratic Party. I speak for myself, as a non-partisan retired military officer who is a former Director of the National Security Agency. I do so because Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, asked me.
In principle, I do not favor Congressional involvement in the execution of U.S. foreign and military policy. I have seen its perverse effects in many cases. The conflict in Iraq is different. Over the past couple of years, the President has let it proceed on automatic pilot, making no corrections in the face of accumulating evidence that his strategy is failing and cannot be rescued.
Thus, he lets the United States fly further and further into trouble, squandering its influence, money, and blood, facilitating the gains of our enemies. The Congress is the only mechanism we have to fill this vacuum in command judgment.
To put this in a simple army metaphor, the Commander-in-Chief seems to have gone AWOL, that is ‘absent without leave.’ He neither acts nor talks as though he is in charge. Rather, he engages in tit-for-tat games.
Some in Congress on both sides of the aisle have responded with their own tits-for-tats. These kinds of games, however, are no longer helpful, much less amusing. They merely reflect the absence of effective leadership in a crisis. And we are in a crisis.
Most Americans suspect that something is fundamentally wrong with the President’s management of the conflict in Iraq. And they are right.
The challenge we face today is not how to win in Iraq; it is how to recover from a strategic mistake: invading Iraq in the first place. The war could never have served American interests.
But it has served Iran’s interest by revenging Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Iran in the 1980s and enhancing Iran’s influence within Iraq. It has also served al Qaeda’s interests, providing a much better training ground than did Afghanistan, allowing it to build its ranks far above the levels and competence that otherwise would have been possible.
We cannot ‘win’ a war that serves our enemies interests and not our own. Thus continuing to pursue the illusion of victory in Iraq makes no sense. We can now see that it never did.
A wise commander in this situation normally revises his objectives and changes his strategy, not just marginally, but radically. Nothing less today will limit the death and destruction that the invasion of Iraq has unleashed.
No effective new strategy can be devised for the United States until it begins withdrawing its forces from Iraq. Only that step will break the paralysis that now confronts us. Withdrawal is the pre-condition for winning support from countries in Europe
that have stood aside and other major powers including India, China, Japan, Russia.
It will also shock and change attitudes in Iran, Syria, and other countries on Iraq’s borders, making them far more likely to take seriously new U.S. approaches, not just to Iraq, but to restoring regional stability and heading off the spreading chaos that our war has caused.
The bill that Congress approved this week, with bipartisan support, setting schedules for withdrawal, provides the President an opportunity to begin this kind of strategic shift, one that defines regional stability as the measure of victory, not some impossible outcome.
I hope the President seizes this moment for a basic change in course and signs the bill the Congress has sent him. I will respect him greatly for such a rare act of courage, and so too, I suspect, will most Americans.
This is retired General Odom. Thank you for listening.
This comes on the heels of General Petraeus admitting that the situation in Iraq is going to get worse before it gets better, and this David Sanger story in the New York Times on how the Bush Junta is cutting back on its blather about “progress” in Iraq, largely because a) there is none, and b) too many people, especially of high military rank, are coming out like General Odom and saying openly that there is none.

Phoenix Woman, This is such great news. I heard on the teevee today that by the summer the Repubics will be on board with us on the war. Troops home now!

Amazing when soldiers become statesmen, but then leaders do rise to the occasion.
I just watched a tape of the now-famous interview of John McCain on “The Daily Show” (I think it originally aired last week). That was an incredible slam that Jon delivered, making it very clear that it is horrible to question people’s patriotism because they conclude that this war is a disaster.
I can’t wait to see if Jon has something to say about Odom’s statements tonight. Dang, I’d love it if he could interview Odom.
What a chilling final paragraph Odom crafted:
If Bush wants to retain any respect from most Americans, he has to stop being so stubborn and petulant – he has to stop the madness of his horrific policies.
Oh no, he’s been getting massages!
Why doesn’t Bush just sign the bill and then add one of his stupid signing statements saying he doesn’t have to pay attention to timetables? He’s done it hundreds of times before. Is that too cynical for him?
This won’t be any different than when Zinni, Trainor, Clark or any of the other General’s that have come out against this war, they’ll just ignore them.
Tenet is on Larry King Live, FYI
Georgesimian @ 17
How is a signing statement release the cash? Hummmmm find a new talking point Nancy has the purse now.
Wheerreesss the beef, I mean pizza, I mean veto???
PW – great post!!
OOOH – Scarborough is really ripping the Bush admin tonight. He just went off about “the dysfunctional decision making” of Bush, and how there is no one in this administration to have stopped them from making such awful decisions – back in 2002 or even today.
Pat Buchanan’s getting into it, too.
It is interesting how his show has been far more critical of the Bush admin since Dan Abrams took over managing MSNBC. I suppose they may be pushing toward public opinion… but it does seem that Scarborough’s disgust with Bush’s managerial “skills” and decisions is genuine.
OT: I posted the diet on the last thread for those interested. Now to read PW.
lolo @ 21
I don’t understand your comment, lolo. Why can’t Bush sign the bill, then add a signing statement saying that he doesn’t have to abide by the timetable? If Congress tried to challenge it, the admin would tie it up in the courts, and it likely would never be decided until Bush rides into the sunset on his hobby horse.
My guess is that Bush wants a fight. He wants to look like “The Decider”, he wants to try and push the Democrats into backing down (and he’s done a terrific job of making the media narrative into “Bush vs. Democrats” when it’s actually Bush vs. Congress – many Republicans are pushing for a withdrawl timeline, too).
Democrats everywhere should prepare to proclaim, “President Bush vetoed funding for our troops!” and keep on saying it until the pitchforks and torches appear.
I did not see this in the NYT or WaPo yesterday or in the WaPo today. Did I miss it?
Gen. Odom was one of the first military to speak up and say in plain language that the war just beginning was likely to be a major debacle. Good to see he is still speaking out.
Skipping back to the Waas article for a moment, he says this:
and also this:
All my emphases. So naturally, inquiring minds want to know who in the world is left that could be described as SAO who would say such things, or even concede that Exec Branch had obligations of disclosure to Congress? Naturally, this person’s identity is undisclosable for now, but still —is a new Deep Throat finally clearing itself (same week as the DC Madam case breaks open, no less)?
Just Google for “Odom traitor”. They are already calling him every name in the book.
Of course Odom’s a traitor. You think the noise machine has any other setting?
I don’t think Bush is looking for a fight. He is trying to postpone the obvious: He lost his war, but not due to the sacrifices and hardships of our American brothers and sisters fighting overseas, or the other countries that hung in there with us. He lost it because he is a loser. Always was and always will be.
The reason he is fighting the troop withdrawal is because he knows he will be impeached. Once the withdrawal begins then the troops will be home in this country and available for interviews and the sharing of their pictures. The pictures of Iraq, in video’s & youtubes will be very damaging. Bush wants to put it off so that he can retire to Paraquay. Him and pickles public life is over. He poisons everything he touches but this time is the worse.

I hate to bust everyone’s bubble but General Odom will be an easy target for the wingnuts. His only war time service was as a staff officer working with the Vietnamization program in the early 70’s. I am not saying this is right but they have and will jump on him.
The President is a lunatic. And Petraeus is no Odom. Petraeus is scary. He’ll do whatever the lunatic tells him to.

Hi,Teddy!
All I can say is BRAVO, both to General Odom and the unnamed source in the Waas article about the secret memo in the DoJ! It is only due to people like this that we will ever regain what we have lost during the Bush years. God bless you both!
There may now be more high-ranking U.S. military officials that have publicly opposed the continuation of this war than there are high-ranking Al-Qaeda officials that have been smoked out and rounded-up.
Keep pressuring Congress to bring our kids home! Not another needs to die for these warmongering criminals.
Hey, look over there….Rosie O’Donnell.

Right. But cold comfort if your a soldier over there, or an Iraqi. Heil Chimpenfuehrer!
I just keep wondering, what does W think he has to gain by vetoing the war funding? Does he think public opinion will change? I doubt that. Does he think there is some magic in keeping out poor overextended troops there longer will help the Iraqis? Can’t be. Is he just trying to preserve, somehow, his own sorry ass? Could be, but it just isn’t going to happen.

Now, that baby has been born, people are coming to terms with that myth. People are waking up every day. Elections matter. The next election would have have to be the final sweep of their sword for their sinister coup, but guess what, we are on to them, and they will implode. However, we cannot let our guard down about voting machines and voter fraud. That will be our most important challenge. IMHO.

Judge Bush by his actions or inaction we have the strongest army on the planet plus the richest country in the world paying for it. We still have not won the war yet despite our wining WW2 in less time. Why have we not won? What are we doing differnt now than we did in WW2 a draft perhaps where the children of the rich and powerful are drafted. It is no secret that our troops have been slow to get Bullet Proof Vests and Humvee Armour, but if Jenna was serving next to Prince Harry what do you want to bet that no expense would be spared to win this war. Drafting the rich makes passing higher taxes to SUPPORT the war easier. A draft would also mean we could have enough troops to control Iraq right now after HOW MANY YEARS we ARE STILL FIGHTING TO CONTROL BAGDAD! So in conclusion a draft to make sure we have enough troops IN CASE something goes wrong. Draft the rich TO MAKE SURE THE TROOPS are well supplied, and that taxes to support the war are PASSED. Call it the FDR doctrine.

General Odom is a patriot, and he follows in the giant footsteps of another great hero: Two time Congressional-Medal-of-Honor winner Major General Smedley Butler

Kudos to Odom and what he says.. but damn, we need to get out, everyone knows it. The bill only sets timelines on some troops. allowing for tens of thousands to remain indefinately. It basically guarantees continued force protection of the “largest permanent base in the known universe” and all contractors are funded.

Regarding Ray McGovern, I strongly disagree. He’s been writing very honestly and passionately about the Bush administration’s crimes for years in relative obscurity (Counterpunch.org, TomPaine and CommonDreams.org have been printing his stuff all along) specifically re: how the CIA shirked their responsibility to truth above all else and played the political games around Iraq and more recently Iran. He was one of the first to point directly to the Nuremburg trials regarding a ‘war of aggression’ being the supreme international crime. McGovern also stood up publicly and called Rummy out for his lies (I’ll try to find a link).

But I will not let mere facts get in the way of a compelling narrative.
if you’re having touble getting your story straight, you may be qualified for an imminent job opening at the DoJ.
Sorry. I’ve got a gig at the World Bank lined up.
Would that be Chief Combsucker?
I wonder if people like M*lk*n think that when the Neocons flee to South America they’ll take her with them?
I posted this downstairs somewhere but it’s more apropos here
want Pelosi to say’
“you vetoed the funding we gave our troops?
what, are you out of your mind?…how do you expect them to get the resources they need to complete the mission?
if you don’t want to give them the resources that is your prerogative as commander in chief but the American people won’t stand for it.
since you refuse to give the soldiers the resources necessary for their deployment we will send you a bill that will provide the resources necessary to bring them home
you have stretched them too thin, you have squandered the states assets and we need to replenish and renew our national security
we will send you the money for our troops one more time, the next time we will send you the funding to bring them home”
that’s what I want to see the first female president say to the current president
snuffy @ 156
Yes, if we stop paying them…
Well, wouldn’t the oil profits pay for them?

That is a good question.
I just got to see the Hannity video. Why is he wearing a nehro jacket? Is he toasted?
The wingnuts already tore into him once back in February when he was interviewed by Hugh Hewitt and they didn’t like what he had to say:
http://preview.tinyurl.com/yuem27
“Sounds like an egomaniac
This is some strategic prima donna, who wasn’t listened to, and in a fit of pique, won’t give a thought to the consequences for the United States if foremost champion of the West is defeated in Iraq.”
“75 year old coots
Like Odom should gum their lunch and watch Matlock reruns. Who cares if this guy was a flag in the early 80s?”
“I guess that in his senility he’s forgotten the chain of command: The Commander-in-Chief gets to make these decisions, not retired generals.”
“Listening to gutless wonders like Odom disgusts me. Their feelings are built on one premise: helplessness. All other impulses turn in circular motion around this inability to rise above one’s own emotional, narcissistic, defeatist angst.”
“How did that slimy weasel ever get to be a General?
He certainly has a big mouth, like a drill sargent, but all he uses it for is to cover up his limp-wristed, pussified attitude toward war.”
And on and on …

you need to update your flash player, the only reason firefox didn’t need to update the flash player is you installed it with the update already written into the download
and ie also has ie spell check with saved passwords…you just have to google the programs
and don’t give me the “firefox does it without added programs” because firefox is one of the biggest added programs you are going to install
Wow Eurika:
Contractors have provided the White House with political cover, allowing for a back-door near doubling of U.S. forces in Iraq through the private sector, while masking the full extent of the human costs of the occupation. Although contractor deaths are not effectively tallied, at least 770 contractors have been killed in Iraq and at least another 7,700 injured. These numbers are not included in any official (or media) toll of the war.

Perris – the problem was that there was a little box I needed to uncheck that required trusted sites to be secure. (for those in IE that want to do this, go to Internet Options/Security/Trusted Sites. Add http://www.firedoglake.com/ and make sure the secure box isn’t checked).
My attention span is being diverted between a good hockey playoff game, two chat windows going, FDL, and a needy cat on my lap (which pushes my computer to my knees). So, I’m a little slow on the uptake tonight!

They can also declare martial law because of “cyber terrorism” – I guess that depends on what the decider defines that as. I believe Clinton put that in place, but I can’t find the exec. order. You should then get the same composition box that you would get if you clicked on “Preview”, so you can do anything in that box that you can do when composing the message in the first place, like deleting words, or typing in new stuff, or changing the formatting, etc.
But when you get done, I think you don’t get the “Preview” option any more, and instead of “Submit comment”, I think the button says “save”. Be sure to click on that when you’re done editing.
BTW, the edit button shows when the header bar on your message is still pink. If you refresh your browser from the top menu bar, I think you lose the opportunity to edit. (All this applies to Firefox; I don’t know about IE, which I avoid.)
What this means is that a quick reader might see your original message before you changed it.

haven’t yet read the new book I linked below, and wasn’t in a hurry to do so until the wingers came out in full force against it
there could be as many as 125,000 Blackwater in Iraq right now – as one who has been involved in evacuating combatants and non combatants out of hot zones in the past – I simply don’t know how they would ever get them all out – assume most would be near the permanent base sites – but it would be a logistical nightmare – and considering the crew involved . . .
they are, however, open to “other ventures”

WWII was fought as a conventional of fixed lines of battle. The Iraq war is the antithesis of that, an insurgent war with no predictable line of battle. This kind of war can only be won if the people where it is being waged are on your side of the fence, you have their hearts and minds, in Iraq that is not the case. No matter what you do, no matter the tonnage of bombs and bullets you expend this kind of war is unwinnable. Our military superiority is for nought as it was in Vietnam. You would think someone would be smart enough in the first place to tell this f##king idiot the facts in the first place. I was a seaman in the Navy and I know it, oh I forgot, it didn’t matter what anyone said invading Iraq was a fait accompli before it ever started and it was lost before it ever started.

Rove is gunning for a Black Hawk Down style (media blitz) scenario whereby he can blame a bloody pullout on the next (Democratic)President. It is imperative for Rove (and the Rethugs – they’re pretty sure that they will lose the presidency in 08) that there be no withdrawal of troops while Dubya is pResident.
Black Hawk Down, a wingnut favorite, fails to emphasize that Bush I sent the troops on the failed mission (ill-prepared and with insufficient equipment). Clinton ordered the pull out and there were casualties. Clinton inherited the clusterfuck from Bush I. Wingnuts ignore that part of the story.

Sorry I’m late with the reply I agree with you but if the Iraq war had been a conventional war I think we still would have lost. We let this war get out of control we did not enforce the law never mind stop the rebels and we let a huge percentage of the population be unemployed. The unemployed people is one of the big reasons we lost the Iraq’s hearts and minds. We never had a plan to win the Iraq’s hearts and minds is what I take to be your main point. Without the Iraq’s hearts and minds we never had a chance even if we did everything I suggested. I agree we were defeated before we even fought.
Maddy I’m not sure I’ve seen you here before, so welcome to the Lake your insight is welcome!

I think that they brought him on thinking that he would criticize Tenet. They are desperate for anyone that was “inside” to do that…and in particular, to get the “left” to attack him as well as the right. That would undercut Tenet’s attack on Buscheney.
They didn’t think that the would be hit with a tangential attack on Cheney instead. They got “punked”.
