Ray MacGovern was an analyst, not an operator, so lying isn’t a part of his tradecraft. Only a true-believing dead ender, such as yourself, can’t see the direction this 6 year long fiasco is headed.

Somehow, I believe, our latter-day Leon Jaworski – P J Fitzgerald – has a large role to play in the endgame of this, our latest Republican spawned national nightmare.

Now, brother Jeff, be careful who you “insinuate” isn’t tellin’ the truth…McGovern is a “professional” which means (in any line a work) his statements will reflect a code of ethics and reason. Beyond that, McGovern possesses something that few in political power have any appreciation for: intellectual honesty. His service to this country over 27 years for administrations of BOTH parties has earned himself a degree credibility that is beyond baseless attacks from folks like you.

So, unless you have some shops ta bring into the ring, Jeff, let me give you a friendly warnin’ that my old Grampa Ole used ta give charlatans and deadbeats that would sit at his poker table: “Don’t let your mouth write any checks that you ass can’t cash.”

Yawn. McGovern has been running around making a claim – that a particular person was involved in forging the Niger documents – that some of our very best investigative reporters have been unable to find a single shred of evidence for. Now he says he has evidence but is unwilling to share any of it. I say share it or color me unpersuaded. I’m not writing checks, I’m asking for him to put his money where his mouth is.

Those are my shops.

As for his intellectual honesty, let me remind you that the agency he worked for makes a world-class art of lying; that’s just part of their job, which is fine. There was a time when people on the left remained aware of that fact. Worth remembering, if you ask me.

But as you note, the 2001 timing of the known Ledeen/Rome meeting(s) is definitely suggestive of Ledeen’s potential involvement in the Niger Uranium Fraud, as well. It was October 15, 2001, Pollari’s first official day on the job at SISMI, and the day Silvio Berlusconi visited Bush at the White House, that the first known hint of these uranium forgeries was passed from SISMI to the CIA field officer in Rome (he was allowed to look at, but not copy, the “draft agreement”). My suspicion is that these forgeries were concocted post-9/11, with the help of the new ‘ethics-challenged’ Italian government, around a genuine 2/1999 Niger telex that the Italians had intercepted. But apparently most of the forgery work was done by at least October 15, 2001, three weeks before the Iran/Iraq/Ledeen Rome meeting, and it’s possible the forgeries had in fact been created many months earlier (some time after the Niger Embassy break-in, which took place over the New Year’s holiday at the beginning of 2001, when official seals and letterhead were taken).
