I bought my first CFTs when they cost Au$22 and the first one lasted about three years. The second one was three weeks — and ‘what warranty’ … I didn’t know they had mercury in them til much later. As for labelling, ha!

Now I’m reading about various problems, like mercury contamination when they’re dropped.

Of course, they’re not supposed to go in track lighting fixtures but you have to know that in advance. And they won’t work on dimmer circuits.

I also have several touch lamps, convenient for the lowest setting when I leave my study for a short time of an evening. Three levels of brightness, 60 w incandescent bulb max.

There’s also three rooms have fluro tube fixtures, hate hate hate! But the former owner put them in.

Maybe the proposed LED bulbs will be the best answer, they should respond to dimmer circuits, likely have various ‘colour temperatures’.

I recycle, conserve water, drive a fuel efficient Toyota Echo, have walked the green walk for years.

And I still think the ‘hockeystick’ curve sucks watermelons through garden hoses.

What gets me about the GW religion is that it is the sole focus at this time. Plus some of the crazy ideas about carbon sequestration.

Nonetheless, I believe in global warming [of some kind] and climate change. I just don’t believe that consensus = science. Nor of government funded plans costing billions of dollars [some of which may actually get past the bureaucracy] nor of expecting third world development to work on first world agenda.

I note, too, the largest solar flare ever recorded, last Dec 6, prefaces a prediction of three years of intense solar activity beginning next year. Hotting up for the election, maybe? If there is one.

Great tune - looks like its from the album More, which is one of the few I don’t have. I’ve heard it on a number of boots though. Pretty!

Hi, Donita! Yeah, you’re right! (I promise, my “English” will get better!)… Well, I’m brazilian!

I don’t know how the things work in the USA, but here in Brazil, incandescent light bulbs consume a lot of electric power… The energy are very expensive. I use fluorescents bulbs and it “help” in the economy.

Haa ha, in this world now, with the things worsening, we should save everything, besides water also… I’m young, but I agree with you, the global warming is one of so many problems that are happening in the world, and few people are really inconvenienced with it… The consequences come later many years! For a lot of people, to worry now with those problems doesn’t have importance. But after many years, the people will suffer the consequences of your acts…

Meanwhile, we’re going trying to improve the world with the little that we can do!
Thank you for the advices! Whenever you can, incorporate Assignment Greens in your posts! I like a lot! ;-)

Great idea: Take a fluorescent bulb to the next pot luck or gathering you go to as a gift. No doubt it will get screwed into a socket so people can see how it works. You’ll have a chance to educate the whole gathering.

Practical tips: Costco has bulbs in very reasonably priced bulk packages. Ikea has a huge variety of smaller sizes to fit in fussy fixtures.

When I was at Keesler, I heard stories about the girls, but could never verify. I can tell you for a fact that I’ve never seen so many drugs in my life. The coke-machine-throwing not only happened, but became a rite of passage for a while.

maunga @ 39

The version I have is how I first learned it. First Friday I was in tech school in the USAF, instructor came in and wrote POETS’Day on blackboard. We all looked at each other. We looked at the folks who had been in the real AF and were cross-training, and no one knew what it meant. Then he told us and we cracked up. Been using it ever since.
————

Man. My tech school didn’t teach that. Which one did you attend? I was at Keesler.

Funniest work acronym I ever had was when I worked at Lockheed Missle & Space Command = LMSC. We said it stood for Let’s Make Some Coffee. It was apt. More apt than I care to admit.

Best job I ever had, bar none.
————
Shepherd AFB, Wichita Falls in early ‘77. Accounting & Finance school

Been there, done it, bout a dozen years ahead, data processing at that time, ended up in Acctg. & Finance @ James Connelly and “dodged the Nam” in Germany. Gulf Tonkin happened while at JCAFB.
Many “war” stories can be told of those days. All the best…….

I was 24 when I joined, so I know what you mean. I felt so…old…next to so many of the kids around me.

Yeah, it was pretty stressful having to live such a rigid lifestyle. RonD didn’t answer my question upthread, but rumor had it that this program had to go into effect because the IG came to Keesler to investigate allegations of widespread corruption and a general breakdown of all order.

Apparently, the first thing they saw as they were driving up to the gate was an airman passed out on the sidewalk. In uniform. They got on the base, and it wasn’t much different.

One squadron (the one Ron listed) was supposedly running a prostitution ring channeling female newbies fresh off the bus from Lackland into “servicing” officers. I don’t know if that’s true or not, but that’s the rumor we heard for why the phase program was implemented.
