I can't stop listening to this song.
Lyrics below the fold.
Valerie
(Mark Ronson feat. Amy Winehouse)
Well sometimes I go out by myself and I look across the water
And I think of all the things, what you're doing and in my head I make a picture
'Cos since I've come on home, well my body's been a mess
And I've missed your ginger hair and the way you like to dress
Won't you come on over, stop making a fool out of me
Why won't you come on over Valerie, Valerie?
Did you have to go to jail, put your house on up for sale, did you get a good lawyer?
I hope you didn't catch a tan, I hope you find the right man who'll fix it for you
Are you shopping anywhere, changed the colour of your hair, are you busy?
And did you have to pay the fine you were dodging all the time are you still dizzy?
Yeah
'Cos since I've come on home, well my body's been a mess
And I've missed your ginger hair and the way you like to dress
Won't you come on over, stop making a fool out of me
Why won't you come on over Valerie, Valerie.
Valerie, Valerie?
Well sometimes I go out by myself and I look across the water
And I think of all the things, what you're doing and in my head I make a picture'
Cos since I've come on home, well my body's been a mess
And I've missed your ginger hair and the way you like to dress
Won't you come on over, stop making a fool out of me
Why won't you come on over Valerie, Valerie.
Valerie, Valerie?
Yeah Valerie

TRex…. dang stopped to listen to the music!
dang! Oh well, we got TRex and Amy Winehouse. What’s not to like?
How are you TRex? Did you see about our blog getting #2 this morning on Blogmad?
TRex!
TRex! tuesday or wednesday night I listened to just about every up on culturebully by Ms. Winehouse. valerie several times. Amy is something else. Thank you TRex for introducing
her to me. *G*
I want to be Amy Winehouse when I grow up.
(minus the substance abuse issue, though)
hmm – very soulful t-rex;o)
SnarKassandra @ 8
I did. Congratulations!
“everything up on culturebully”
TRex @ 13
But now in the last 48 hrs we have only had 2 posts. :(
You know, I’m contemplating going out tonight.
Winehouse has a beautiful voice.
EPU’d ~ Bill Moyers BEST line tonight:
TRex, do you ever listen to any Bettye LaVette? It just occurred to me that Amy reminds me of her.
lots to see on the tv tonight – starting with KO then B MOYERS and now B MAHER

Hey Twisted,

Great song. What’s that growing out of the top of Amy’s head?
Damn, that was one take. Another name to add to my list, thanks Trex! Here’s one backatcha!

Is it for graduation? No, I won’t be there unfortunately. Did place a big order from Zingermans today though!

I like him!
Twisted Martini @ 26
Yeah. The kids get to hear a true inspiration. I just hope a certain 33% listens.
BTW, I will take a #23.
Is Moyers now a regular show on PBS? Gonna have to get a season pass. I can’t take Maher anymore, he lets the wingnuts get away with too much. New Rules are usually good though.
nice touch, checking her nails while singing…

The comments to the IndyStar item, however, do . . . including one that quotes an ABCnews blog noting the real reason. There’s another that really hits it hard:

Bizarre event in Wasilla, Alaska this afternoon. I play bugle at funerals and memorial services for deceased veterans. I’m a disabled vet. I was supposed to play at a service in Wasilla today, but the scheduling didn’t work. A friend played, and here’s what he told me.
The memorial service was held at a new Veterans’ Memorial in the town park. The deceased Veteran’s family was told beforehand that the city didn’t want the Army honor guard to discharge weapons at the service. The veteran had been decorated during the first Gulf War, so he merited a full honor guard, including a 21-gun salute by serving members of his service. The Army chaplain, head of the honor guard, had Federal orders demanding the volley – which contains blanks – be discharged.
Immediately after the Army honor guard fired the salute and taps were played, the Wasilla police handed the widow a ticket, even before the honor guard finished folding her husband’s flag.

Here’s a question: How is it decided whether there will be a “daily” press briefing? Along with being addicted to FDL, I read the press briefing transcript whenever it’s available. I know that when the press is traveling with the president, they’ll often have a short “gaggle,” but I was really, really, really looking forward to Ms. Perino’s last briefing before Tony Snow returns on Monday and all feel obliged to toss rose petals instead of hard-hitting questions.
Ed*ard Teller @ 151
Unbelievably insensitive on the part of the PD.
Fern @ 130
It sounds really excessive to me, and I worked at a passport issuing USPS. I didn’t process the apps, but I was there when people were dealing wth the forms a lot. I gave out a lot of the forms. I’ve seen them, and don’t remember seeing anything about place of employment. The only time anyone wanted extra information, it was for naturalized citizens, and even then, they didn’t want places of employment! I mean, an authority can ask for some additional evidence of citizenship, if something looks hinky, but not weird crap like that. As for “references,” sometimes we required witnesses to vouch for naturalized citizens, but that was only for people who didn’t have a picture ID or something like that.

from the same article wrt Tobias:
Tobias was the second public figure identified as a customer of Palfrey’s service. Palfrey recently made good on her threat to identify high-profile clients, listing in court documents a military strategist known for his “shock and awe” combat theories.

Thank you I was afraid of this

I’m going to miss Dana Perino. Compared to Snow, Dana is much more pleasant when she lies.

Hi everyone. I’m late checking in. Bill Moyers’ show was good tonight. Jon Stewart was kind of serious, but right on. Josh Marshall’s enthusiasm for uncovering the dirty laundry is infectious.
On my PBS affiliate Charlie Rose is discussing George Tenet’s book. Guests are Tyler Drumheller, former European Chief, Tenet’s former chief of staff, and Scott Shane, a NYT reporter. It’s kind of a dance-around. So far I haven’t heard anything “unusual” – they’re just “dancing.”
Somehow I think the hiring of Regent University grads is going to come to a grinding halt.

The White House Scales Back Talk of Iraq Progress
By DAVID E. SANGER
WASHINGTON, April 27 — The Bush administration will not try to assess whether the troop increase in Iraq is producing signs of political progress or greater security until September, and many of Mr. Bush’s top advisers now anticipate that any gains by then will be limited, according to senior administration officials.
In interviews over the past week, the officials made clear that the White House is gradually scaling back its expectations for the government of President Nuri Kamal al-Maliki. The timelines they are now discussing suggest that the White House may maintain the increased numbers of American troops in Iraq well into next year.
That prospect would entail a dramatically longer commitment of frontline troops, patrolling the most dangerous neighborhoods of Baghdad, than the one envisioned in legislation that passed the House and Senate this week. That vote, largely symbolic because Democrats do not have the votes to override the promised presidential veto, set deadlines that would lead to the withdrawal of combat troops by the end of March 2008.
Suzanne @ 241
I would say yes since they are making these changes. I think there will be less of this:
Pat9 @ 235
I quit watching Charlie Rose when I saw an interview he did with Michael Moore. Whatever else anyone can say about Moore, he deserves a chance to answer a damned question, rather than have an interviewer pontificate about how wrong Moore is to state what little he was allowed. Rose just kept going on and on about how the media wasn’t the bad guy, that they were doing their jobs, that they were reporting the facts, etc., etc. Michael Moore finally stopped talking and just stared at the guy like, “I’d love to say something, but why should I? You’re making my point about the arrogance, ignorance and incompetence of the media, dufus.”
I was just thinking the same thing about Rose…
Well that certainly inspires confidence. Makes me glad I’m white. Just wish my son was.

I think that is coming. The spotlights that Conyers, Leahy, and Waxman are shining on this crap certainly brought about this change. What Josh, McClatchy, Marcy and others are doing is exposing the material to the wider media. Look at what Josh did, it got Feinstein moving and the Bushies are crumbling.

Houston Chronicle
The death of Pulitzer Prize winner David Halberstam, 73, in a car accident has drawn a flood of tributes. A prolific writer of more than 20 books, the lanky, gruff-voiced Halberstam made his fame as a hard-nosed 29-year old Vietnam War correspondent for The New York Times whose dispatches exposed the false optimism of U.S. officials and commanders about that conflict.
Halberstam’s refusal to take officials at their word and insistence on questioning every available source made him a hero to a generation of journalists who followed. His landmark examination of what went wrong in Vietnam — The Best and the Brightest — was published in 1972 and profiled how ostensibly brilliant statesmen led the country into a bloody, ultimately losing fight in Southeast Asia.
Two days after Halberstam’s death, PBS aired a segment of Bill Moyers’ Journal called “Buying the War,” an examination of the failure of many journalists to adequately question the Bush administration’s justification for invading Iraq. The emotional outpouring after the 9/11 attacks pushed media outlets into self-censorship and suppressed critical analysis.
Phil Donahue’s talk show had high ratings, but because he allowed guests to voice antiwar opinions NBC canceled the program weeks before the war began.
(snip)
In another instance, officials planted a false story in The New York Times indicating that Iraq had purchased aluminum tubes to be used to process uranium for nuclear weapons. Vice President Dick Cheney and others then went on Sunday talk shows citing the story as confirmation of Saddam Hussein’s efforts to produce weapons of mass destruction.
Moyers offers some examples of pre-war reporting that Halberstam would have embraced. The Knight Ridder Washington Bureau’s John Walcott, Jonathan Landay and Warren Strobel published insightful pieces questioning the accuracy of U.S. intelligence claims, but they were lost in the din of cheerleading in support of the war. (Weeks before the war, the Houston Chronicle editorial board warned in an editorial that there was too little justification for the United States to invade Iraq, and too much risk.)
Halberstam’s life is a lesson plan in how news media in a free society should hold government accountable to the truth. After the deaths of more than 3,300 U.S. troops and tens of thousands of Iraqis in a war that shows no signs of ending, Moyer’s report details the disastrous consequences of what happens when journalists abdicate that role.

In Nixon’s time the ownership of the major media was not concenrated in as few hands as it is now, and that makes a big difference. The news today is more slanted to suit the agenda of the corporate oligarchs. It is no longer really news, but advocacy pretending to be news, and therefore corrupt and dishonest.

Who would you nominate dear Texas Betsy?
Texas Betsy @ 248
Ah, the clueless “conventional wisdom” of the Washington press corps strikes again. They still don’t get that the veto/override logic doesn’t cause Bush to get his way, because he needs a bill of some sort to pass to fund his war. Despite the fact that public opinion is trending steadily to the Democrats’ advantage in this, and Bush and Cheney have no credibility, they’re still convinced that at some point people will buy Bush’s logic that the Dems are “undermining the troops,” rather than continuing to see that Bush’s utter unwillingness to compromise is what’s blocking the bill.
(Heck, the way a lot of the recent polls are looking, a majority might well be happier if the funding did “run out” and force the troops to come home in July.)

I adore John Edwards, but I think we really need what Gore has to bring to the table, and I can’t picture him getting in the race to be VP again.
I think that, as distasteful as another race against these cheating thugs would be for him, I don’t think there’s a better bully pulpit for his environmental issues than the Presidency of the United States. It’s the only position that would make him more effective as an environmentalist than what he’s doing now.
He’s the only person with the moral authority and clout to goad the country into taking global warming seriously. He’s already made some inroads – there’s definitely a sea change on that subject. And we can’t wait any longer to deal with it. We have to get rid of the Office of Faith-Based Science before we go beyond the point of no return.
But I do love me some John Edwards. He is a true populist, and he gets it. Imagine a couple of smart, principled people in the White House – if it’s still white by the time the thugs get through smearing it with their filth…
Hi Aunt Betsy.
LJ/A: I don’t usually watch Charlie Rose either. Your remark was refreshing because the way the media has let us down – well, maybe they’ll be different now. They all are on the defensive because they can’t take what they therselves have been dishing out, plus what they’re hearing now is the TRUTH, whereas they fed us spin (lies, if you will) these past six years. I’m not surprised that news consumers are giving up newspapers and TV and spending time on blogs so they’ll be properly informed. An e-mail from Greg Palast is worth more than hours with Timmeh.

What about starter’s pistols at the local high school track meet?
Hey, a great new song. A couple months ago I did a piece at the Fire on the Mountain blog entitled “Top Girls’/Women’s Names For Pop Songs” and discovered an anomaly which this tune continues!
Yay! another white girl trying to be black. The REAL black girl singers (who don’t get noticed) always really love that. Her back up singers have better chops. Why aren’t they out front… Oh that’s right, they’re black.
I was thinking that, too. What, about Amy, is different or better than the women she sounds like? Nevertheless, I’m liking her lyrics. And, I think it’s ok that black people influence white people here. Interracial marriages have skyrocketed. Maybe we’re becoming, all of us, more of a culture together? The downside is that Amy gets the money somebody else didn’t. That seems to have happened with blues and jazz, too. But I think I see the greatest black artists allowing the influence in turn that whites have on the musical forms they adopt from the African American community. If the races kind of call and respond to each other (and I’m still sorry about the money thing), it’s better than not. I get the beef Sid has, though. It was my first thought.
