I've said it before and I will undoubtedly say it again. Karma's a bitch. And she knows where you live.
A spokesman for Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice suggested that she had more important things to do than testify before Congress the day before a House Committee is threatening to issue a subpoena for her cooperation with an investigation into the evidence used to build the case for the Iraq War.
Meanwhile, a Republican Congressman sent out an "action alert" claiming that "we've gotten word that Waxman will issue a subpoena to Secretary Rice tomorrow morning," adding that such a move could allow the GOP to show how Democrats are "trying to win the political war for themselves no matter its effect on America’s efforts to promote peace and democracy abroad."
Hope you've got some lovely shoes to wear to your testimony, Condi.
Oh, and I love that bit about the GOP's "efforts to promote peace and democracy abroad". Yeah, nothing in the world promotes "peace" like invading some tinpot dictator's country and unleashing a civil war of Biblical proportions.
Let's see what else is going on with the 'Publicans this week. It appears that the Office of Special Counsel has stirred from its ongoing torpor and announced that it will be launching a "sweeping" investigation into the activities of Pear-Shaped Minion of Satan, Karl Rove. Before you get too much of a hard-on for that, though, you should bear in mind that the head of this investigation is one Mr. Scott Bloch, a "loyal Bushie" who (when he can be bothered to do anything at all) has spent his time at his post ensuring that the wheels of justice never grind at all for gays and whistleblowers:
Jesus' General from 2005: One of Our Leader's most faithful servants, Scott Bloch, is conducting a similar kind of purge at the Department of Justice's Office of Special Counsel. His office is tasked with investigating discrimination complaints made by federal employees. He's done a great job. Last year, he prevented many new cases from being filed by unilaterally deciding that persecuting homosexuals in federal workplaces would no longer violate federal law. Recently, he cleared more than 600 cases by simply moving files from the filing cabinet to the recycle bin It's that kind of innovative thinking we've been demanding of our leaders in Washington.
Some of the OSC staff were resistant to Mr. Bloch's bold new strategies and they voiced concerns about them. They seemed to lack faith in the rightness of Bloch's actions. Fortunately, Bloch understands the danger posed by internal policy discussions and has purged these apostates. For that, the General salutes him.
(Go see the photo. Teh General gives it a RoyCohndar Signal Strength of 9.7 Gannons.)
Raw Story reports that Rove's appointed investigator is himself under investigation.
But as editor for The Nation David Corn noted, OSC head Scott Bloch, a presidential appointee, has been marred with scandal himself. The Washington Post reported in February that the Office of Personnel Management's inspector general has been investigating Bloch for alleged intimidation of career appointees. In May 2005, the Post reported on Bloch's refusal to enforce a discrimination ban within his office. And in April 2005, Bloch's office was accused of political bias.
CREW Executive Director Melanie Sloan commented, “Having transformed OSC into a virtual black hole for legitimate complaints of retaliation, Bloch is decidedly not the right person to tackle the issues of misconduct and illegality that surround top White House officials.” Sloan continued, “There is a serious question as to whether Bloch will just provide cover for an administration that has been covering for him."
So, yeah, I'm not expecting much from Mr. Bloch's "investigation". Let's hope Rep. Waxman doesn't believe the hype, either.
Raw Story is a veritable garden of earthly delights today, actually. You know, I've been wondering what our options are concerning Buttercheeks Gone-zales. Here's one:
A breaking report at Roll Call says the Senate may soon give Attorney General Alberto Gonzales a vote of no confidence.
A source told Roll Call the matter was discussed at today's Senate Democratic luncheon, but had few additional details.
"The vote would be nonbinding and have no substantive impact, but it would force all Republican Senators into the politically uncomfortable position of saying publicly whether they continue to support Gonzales in the wake of the scandal surrounding the firings of eight U.S. attorneys," wrote the paper's Erin Billings.
Um, that's all well and good, but what the hell is with all this "nonbinding" bullshit? I know it's a lot to ask, but on this matter, can the Congress be bothered to do anything more than pose around and issue threats? That's what we have Republicans for, isn't it?
Yes, each week that passes us seems to be furiously competing with the others for the title of "Worst Week for the Bush Administration EVAR!!1!1!!" I wonder if the panic has reached all the way to His Nothingness yet, or if all the suck-ups and turd-polishers in the White House have decided it's safer to just leave him to his bubble. "Yes, sir, Mr. Preznint, we are winning in Iraq!", "Your Worship, your aide Mr. Gonzales has won a Glorious Victory against the Congress in his testimony, sir.", "Polls mean nothing, mein fuhrer, your Legacy is secure! Are you ready for your bike ride?"
I can only hope that George McGovern is right:
It is my firm belief that the Cheney-Bush team has committed offenses that are worse than those that drove Nixon, Vice President Spiro Agnew and Atty. Gen. John Mitchell from office after 1972. Indeed, as their repeated violations of the Constitution and federal statutes, as well as their repudiation of international law, come under increased consideration, I expect to see Cheney and Bush forced to resign their offices before 2008 is over.
That would be so sad that I'd never stop laughing.
Ever.

I guess the dwindling audience for these action alerts is down to a couple of Broders and a handful of Hiatts?

I am a brand-new grandma. My beloved and I have a daughter who spawned her own daughter late late-night last night. The internets make telling the whole world more of a literal thing than before. But, it means working harder to make her world better. I’m depending on the fruits of what Jane, Christy, TRex, Pach, and especially Cassie (as the immediate wave of the future) are sowing here. Thanks for the effort, all of you!
Shadowstalker @ 22
Congrats Grandma! What is her name?
I suspect the shrub is drunk all the time now…
Shadowstalker, that’s wonderful! Congratulations.
hey TRex!
sorry Melanie there is zero question as to whether Bloch will provide cover for an administration that has been covering for him and I’ve only spent 90 minutes on the puke
TeddySF – lemme know if you do a post on this guy – have some stuff on his ‘work’ on behalf of an ID group – far outside OSC purview :)
TRex! Excellent as always.
Just one quibble: you typed “hard-on” within 10 words of “Karl Rove”. Do you want the entire Lake to suffer erectile dysfunction?
Congratulations Shadowstalker!
Well, Bloch is blocking for Butterbutt and KKKarl and the rest of the Bushies. This is a joke meant to distract. The chances of this Good Ole Boy producing anything but mischief is a Big Zed!
Waxman ain’t stupid and neither are Leahy and Conyers. Bloch will be in front of Waxman soon enough.

It would seem so.
“That Bloch” looks just like the rest of ‘em: pudgy, femenine fat pattern: what’s up with that? Some kind of endocrine pattern that has influenced their brains in a bad way? I hate to comment on the way people look, but it’s pretty remarkable. I could hardly pick each of them out of a line up.

If I were advising Pelosi/Reid, I would combat that bs from bush about they should send me a real bill sted of this one they know will be vetoed, by challenging GOOPERS to vote for it and saying they owe it to the country to do the right thing.
I don’t think the Dems should by into the Bush meme that there arent a few senators and congs who will break with him and vote for sanity.
AZ Matt @ 29
True, and the thing about those hearings is that there’s no defending what the Army did – it strips the political dimension out of the air and lands on simple decency. Much harder to bullet-point your way out of victimizing soldiers and their families than to obfuscate about a much more intricate (if more pernicious) web of lies at DOJ…

Condoliar Rice not only bought Ferragamo shoes immediately after Katrina, she also went to a comedy show on Broadway and merrily laughed her way thru it. Comparing Condoliar and Nancy Pelosi is quite a contrast, isn’t it? Nancy has nice clothes, but she doesn’t take time off the job to buy them.

All good wishes for you and yours. Many hopes for her adulthood to be lived in a free country.
I love George McGovern.
In 1972, a bunch of us highschoolers toppled an Establishment “undecided” slate, swaying the Virginia (!) Democratic Party partly for McGovern at the Democratic National Convention. That summer, after landing at Dulles Airport, McGovern spent many moments at the fence to chat with my aging grandmother, who’d been a Nixon enemy herself since her pal Helen Gahagan Douglas was called The Pink Lady, when Nixon first ran for Congress. Then, McGovern stood firm (110%!) behind Tom Eagleton, until the party poobahs told him that wouldn’t fly.
But most important, at a book signing much later, when I was estranged from my folks and living the wild life, George McGovern told my mom to never give up, based on his experience with his own daughter. Mom took that advice, and I’m alive today because George McGovern spoke his truth to another baffled parent.
So, if George McGovern thinks this crowd has to go, that’s enough for me. (Not that I needed a lot of convincing!)

News on Renzi from TPM
Uh, TRex, I know you know this, but the Senate doesn’t have the authority to initiate impeachments — that belongs to the House.
Given Reid’s shrewdness on many matters of legislative tactics and strategy, I’d expect that this idea has several functions. One is, as your quote noted, to flush out the Republican Senators and divide them, given that all Dems would vote for the resolution and many Republican Senators are on record calling for Gonzo’s resignation.
Another is to put all the Republican Senators who vote for the resolution in a position where they would need to follow up on their vote with active pressure on the White House, or risk looking phony and inept about protecting their own colleagues’ political positions for 2008. They desperately need to distance themselves from an increasingly disastrous and failed Administration that, given its lack of attitude change after the wipeout of November 2006, would rather blow up the Republican party ship around them than save congressional Republicans (more power to this delusional lunacy, but this is exactly what congressional Republicans are afraid of).
And of course, assuming Republican pressure on Gonzo to resign after a vote for the resolution doesn’t do the trick, it would set up the House to start impeachment proceedings. While many in the House would be timid about this, John Conyers is neither timid nor easily deterred by his colleagues’ timidity. I think he would use a Senate vote as a signal to take up an impeachment resolution. In fact, I’d be very surprised if this kind of conversation with Conyers hadn’t been a part of the Senate leaders’ discussions about the resolution idea.
Sorry, Jon Stewart just snarked McCain. The audience cheered one of Jon’s comments and McCain said, “I know whose side they’re on.”
Without missing a beat, Jon said, “They’re on America’s side, because they’re patriots.”
The audience roared wildly … as wildly as we do when TRex’s post goes up on FDL.
Hey TRex, tomorrow when I meditate, I’m gonna be chanting, “Free The Clot, Free The Clot …”.
Well, at least Bradley Scholzman can manage facial hair…
OT-McCain was just on Daily Show.
He was pretty testy.
Evening Betsy – if Cassie is still here; go see my answer to you at the end of the last thread.
EPU’d, but I’m still curious: does anyone know what the status of the ‘career staff’ at OSC is after Bloch’s manipulations? The L.A. Times is reporting that various groups have complained that OSC is planning a whitewash. OSC’s response: “A spokesman … waved away the complaints, saying agency staffers have already begun to form an internal task force, led in part by career staff”.
Also possibly of note: “While Bloch has alienated advocacy groups on the left, he has also lost support from White House insiders, according to one report. The Weekly Standard, a conservative magazine, reported last year that Bloch was ostracized by the White House and might even be urged to step down.”

AZMatt @ 29, maybe today’s hearing got some attention where you are. There was no mention of it on the website of our local newspaper in the red district of the blue state where I live, so I posted links – no comments, just a brief description of who testified and links to the Oversight Committee website and CNN. And a link to info about LaVena Johnson, in case anyone wondered about Mr. Clay’s reference. We have a pretty serious Army post here, so you might think someone would be interested. The only comment was that this kind of thing has happened before and will happen again.
They don’t seem to mind anything. There are actually people here who believe that it doesn’t matter that the reasons Bush gave us for invading Iraq were false – he knows more than he has to tell us, and he’s got some master plan for – - – well, for whatever.
They’re decent people, really, in some ways, but inexcusably oblivious. They have time to watch the Simpsons or American Idol, so you’d think they have time to stay at least moderately informed about the world around them.
I think people who are trying to kill me and my little family (via war, bad peanut butter, etc.) are worth at least as much attention as talentless artistes and rude cartoon characters.

Howard Dean was endorsed for the Presidency by Al Gore in 2004. Since that time, Dean has said that he will not run for President in 2008.
However, he never said he wouldn’t run for Vice President, so I’m trying to find a way to convince Al Gore to run for President so that the man he endorsed could win the White House.
I realize that Gore would be just a figurehead, as Bush is to Cheney, but is that so high a price to pay to have Howard Dean in the White House?

Poop-squirt Murdoch was just lamenting about how poor George W. Bush is being beaten up by the mean media! Says it seems Bush doesn’t even know how to fight back.

I think Waxman hearings forced Junior onto TV today to try to steal the thunder. Didn’t work. Won’t work any more.

Not so much about Fucker. He says “I hate the war too, but…” or “Alberto could not tie his shoes, but…” or “those poor VTech kids, I am so for gun control, but…” then he spews the talking points. He is hedging his bets. He needs a job in 19 months.
npb, you are lucky to have Sam Farr, and America is lucky to have Nancy Pelosi.
I frankly can’t wait for the moving vans to arrive at 1600 PaAve and the Naval Observatory so Paul can be First Gentleman. Then SF can have some real representation! It’s lovely that our Congresswoman provides wonderful national leadership and we are tremendously proud of her. BUT — more than 60% of SF voted last year to direct our Congresswoman to pursue impeachment immediately, as has our Board of Supes.
It’s a problem: having your Congresswoman be Speaker when Speaker = Cat Herder! Damn those BlueDogs for compromising our Nancy. Set the table again, please!!

gotta cleanup my kitchen – back in a flash
From now until November 2008, anything that the Bush administration does can be filed under one of two categories: 1) delay things until after the election or 2) hurry things up so investigations of “culture of corruption” Republican activities does not carry over into 2008’s election season.
The second category is why Scott Bloch is “hurrying up” the Office of Special Counsel’s “sweeping” investigation into long-overlooked, long-condoned “culture of corruption” Republican activities involving direct violations of the Hatch Act and other sins against our democracy.
Furthermore, Scott Bloch-heads’ combining three investigations into one is proof that he, and Karl Rove no doubt, want these cases “cleared” up before the 2008 election season begins, so they can begin gaming the November 2008 elections in earnest next year without pesky ongoing investigations against “culture of corruption” Republicans going on.
In other words, they don’t want anymore “Mark Foley sex scandals” derailing their grand(ious) political strategies next year, detracting from all the “voter fraud” cases that will be brought against Democrats by the “loyal Bushie” U.S. Attorneys that remain in place, who’ve all received their Power-Point marching orders.
GabrielOak @ 237

http://www.washingtonpost.com/…..c-politics
In a speech today [Wed.] at the Brookings Institution, House Democratic Caucus Chairman Rahm Emanuel will seek to tie together a series of Bush administration scandals, controversies and missteps into what he argues is a campaign to turn the government into an appendage of the Republican Party.
The speech will mark a shift from Democrats calling the Bush administration incompetent to preparing a darker case, accusing the administration of harboring malevolent intent.
“Under this administration, the federal government has become a stepchild of the Republican Party,” Emanuel will say, according to a prepared text. “And in promoting its partisan interests, absolutely nothing is out of bounds — from our national security to our justice system and everything in between.”

Texas House gives final approve to voter ID bill
4/24/2007 6:58 PM
By: Associated Press
The Texas House gave final approval Tuesday to a bill requiring more proof of identify at the voting booth.
The bill was proposed by Rep. Betty Brown, R-Terrell. It would require voters to produce photo identification or two other forms of non-photo identification at a polling place.
Brown says she wants to prevent voter fraud and to keep “illegal aliens, non-citizens” and other ineligible residents from voting. Supporters say they want to crack down on voter impersonation.
But opponents say there’s no evidence that’s happening in any widespread fashion in Texas. The opponents also say the measure would lead to voter discrimination.
Existing state law allows voters to simply show their voter registration card or, if they don’t have it, show identification to have their name matched to voter registry rolls.
In passionate speeches before today’s 76-69 vote, several minority Democrats urged fellow House members to vote against the legislation. They said it’s a backward step after years of fights for voting equality.

One big difference between that earlier post from last August and now — it is new Congress.
What is interesting in the other story used as an example with Occidental Chemical workers who were sterilized by the pesticide. That pesticide was a fungicide used in the banana plantations in Costa Rica. THe banana company had been informed by the chemical company that the material was causing sterility but the banana caompany kept using it and forced the chemical company to fulfill the contract. About 3,000 banana workers were sterilized in Costa Rica by this shit. When confronted by the Costa Rican government the banana company transfered thier remaining stocks of chemical to Honduras.
The workers filed suit in the US. One company official made the comment that they needed some birth control down there.

Protest chant from a year ago or so, Code Pink in NYC:
Condi, Condi, Condi Rice
Your policies suck but your shoes are nice!
Just wanted to keep this one alive… I’ll never forget that anonymous New York shopper, the week of Katrina, confronting Condi at Ferragamo and saying “New Orleans is drowning and you’re buying shoes? Why are you on vacation? People are dying!”
Go, New York loudmouth ladies!
I just want to see just once Condoleeza Rice and Barbara Boxer jump over the tables at eachother in a knock down, drag out, bitch fight on the committee room floor. You know they want to. They are probably dying to settle the score before the administration ends. McGovern predicting Cheney and Bush will resign before the end of 2008? Probably not until November when the administration ends anyway. I don’t think Pelosi would want to be President until Hillary has had a go at it. I would be happy with exposing Rove to the american people for what he is and let history condemn Cheney and Bush in infamy.
lolo @ 251
Sounds a lot like a threat! Hmmm do you think he has some inside info about 911?
Nothing is better than sitting back and watch the Dems repeat the mistakes of the Gingrich Congress. You people learn nothing, you know that?
Pelosi and Reid looked like the arrogant asshats that they actually are when they refused, at least at first, to meet with David Petraus. You people are extremists, so you don’t know how this looks in the country. It’s as if Karl Rove is cutting checks over at the DNC.
We couldn’t write this script better if Ken Mehlman and Mark McKinnon got down and started writing it themselves: Henry Waxman, bully of bullies, the kind of ambulance chaser who puts late night commercials for his law firm on public access cable, is now going to subpoena Condi Rice, Republican Heroine whose ratings in the country are somewhere between 55% and 60%.
And you think Rice is scared of a two bit showman like Waxman? I’ve been trying to talk sense into Lefties for a month on this issue: why do you people think that Condi has been so dismissive to Big Bad Henry Waxman? She’s never this way to her friends on Foreign Relations and Appropriations. She’s even been as cooperative as she could be, within the bounds of allowing the President some diplomatic manuevering room, to Jim Webb’s Iran inquiries. But she’s treating Waxman for the Used Car Salesman with a chili stain on his tie that he actually is. Nope. Waxman gets the full domma treatment, complete with stress ball.
Do you think she wanted to provoke him? Wound his pride? Make sure that he answered the Call of the Nutroots and issued a subpoena? I do. Now it’s partisan. Now, Waxman has lost the Committee Republicans. Now it turns into an Ollie North hearing. Which is what she was counting on. She knows Waxman has a terribly weak hand to play.
Condi Rice walked Waxman right into this. But you people watch Olbermann, so you don’t think she’s capable of such things. Watch, and learn. Condi Rice is going to show you people how a bully is taken down.
did they actually say she had more important things to do???? than respond to a Constitutional officer, a member of Congress (a committee chair no less), a representative of the people (that pay her salary)??? talk about hubris. let’s just start the impeach Condi hearings now.
section9 @ 291
Your defense of the indefensible is rather pathetic but then what do Republican apologists have left? What was the name of that memo that Condi had in her possession in the summer of 2001? Oh, that’s right “Bin Laden Determined to Strike in the U.S.” Her bad I guess. Who said “No one imagined that anyone would use planes as weapons”? Oh yeah, that was Condi. Did you actually believe this when just 6 months earlier she had been warned of just that possibililty. But then you and your kind will make excuses of the indefensible because they belong to your side. Your Party means more to you than your country. What a pity. Our founding fathers did battle with your type of apologist and you know what, your side lost then too.

Time to shop for $2,000 shoes while the people of New Orleans drown, but – like – no time to appear before Congress (who are a co-equal branch, and thus far more powerful than her)?

Or, if her stock is even further down, maybe at Bob Jones U. :o)
Whatever; over the next twelvemonth, there are going to be a BUNCH of bushmasters frantically looking for logs to crawl under.
Holy Shit! I missed that, all to hell and gone.
“Condi Rice is going to show you people how a bully is taken down.”
She sure is. When SHE bails on junior-Goatboy, it’s going to be the 8 ball in the side pocket. :o)

The Ten Points of Mz. Naomi Wolfe (another one I hope TheCassieMeistress has knowledge of) as featured in UK Guardian.
Barring an ‘incident’, we got ‘em dead meat to the grinder.
