It is not surprising that the Bush administration, which believes that government was meant to serve the party and not the people, is increasingly haunted by the Hatch Act. This is the nearly forgotten 1939 law that forbids federal workers from politicking during tax-paid office hours.

A House committee is investigating an outrageous videoconference last January at which a deputy to Karl Rove delivered a PowerPoint lecture to managers at the General Services Administration — the government’s housekeeping agency, which has enormous contracting power — on which Republican members of Congress could use bolstering in the next election. The administrator, Lurita Doan, was quoted by several at the gathering as asking how agency workers could “help ‘our candidates’ in the next election.” Ms. Doan told Congress she did not remember that.

The Los Angeles Times reports similar political pitches at other agencies with other White House officials, including Mr. Rove. Representative Henry Waxman of California has stirred enough evidence of chicanery to finally prod promises for an inquiry by the administration’s Hatch Act watchdog, the Office of Special Counsel. But beware of the watchdog.

I get what you mean, but all in all, I’d rather that there were fewer people like her that had such reasons to be ripping folks new ones.

The youngster who was ordered not to tell Kevin Tillman the truth . . . good for him for speaking up, too. I hope his superiors thank him for it, because he’s doing them a favor by showing the nation that not every person in a military uniform can be used for a prop by twisted PR people at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

I hope the Dems have the guts to go after the people responsible and give justice to the Tillmans and all Americans.

NEW YORK (Commentary) The most powerful indictment of the news media for falling down in its duties in the run-up to the war in Iraq will appear next Wednesday, a 90-minute PBS broadcast called “Buying the War,” which marks the return of “Bill Moyers Journal.” E&P was sent a preview DVD and a draft transcript for the program this week.

While much of the evidence of the media’s role as cheerleaders for the war presented here is not new, it is skillfully assembled, with many fresh quotes from interviews (with the likes of Tim Russert and Walter Pincus) along with numerous embarrassing examples of past statements by journalists and pundits that proved grossly misleading or wrong. Several prominent media figures, prodded by Moyers, admit the media failed miserably, though few take personal responsibility.

The war continues today, now in its fifth year, with the death toll for Americans and Iraqis rising again — yet Moyers points out, “the press has yet to come to terms with its role in enabling the Bush Administration to go to war on false pretenses.”

The September 25, 2005 edition of the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper reported that Tillman held views which were critical of the Iraq war and did not support President Bush’s re-election. According to Tillman’s mother, a friend of Tillman had arranged a meeting with Noam Chomsky, to take place after his return from Afghanistan. Chomsky has confirmed this [14]. The article also reported that Tillman urged a soldier in his platoon to vote for John Kerry in the 2004 U.S. Presidential election.[11]

“This is the most incompetent White House I’ve seen since I came to Washington,” said one GOP senator. “The White House legislative liaison team is incompetent, pitiful, embarrassing. My colleagues can’t even tell you who the White House Senate liaison is. There is rank incompetence throughout the government. It’s the weakest Cabinet I’ve seen.” And remember, this is a Republican talking.

Who knows whether he was shot because he wanted to talk to Chomsky. But it’s been verified that Tillman did in fact want to talk to him. If you watch the hearings, you can tell that the Tillman’s are no ones fools. They are not the type to shut up an be “loyal Bushies”.

I started this day under the old Ford pickup doing an oil change and then drove it to the studio, where i worked for the next 13 hours.

I am whipped, and my neck hurts from having to lean up while I pulled the oil pan plug….

I hear ya!! But you gotta remember, sports is all about the money now. Especially with all the new stadiums or arena being built. I can only think of three stadiums that won’t become corporate named anytime soon. Yankee Stadium. LOL. Martin lost the last election because of a scandal involving one of Chretien’s ministers. The PCs are in, as a minority govt. and they are as red as Bush’s Reps. Ugly political mood, ugly ads, lots of mudslinging, very un- Canadian … and not likely to change for the better any time soon.
I wish Martin could have continued for 3 – 4 more years, he was a very smart man who let Chretien steal a lot of his credit. The rightward shift was a vote against the corruption in Chretien’s time, as if the PCs were any less corrupt.

Last autumn, there was a military coup in Thailand. The leaders of the coup took a number of steps, rather systematically, as if they had a shopping list. In a sense, they did. Within a matter of days, democracy had been closed down: the coup leaders declared martial law, sent armed soldiers into residential areas, took over radio and TV stations, issued restrictions on the press, tightened some limits on travel, and took certain activists into custody. They were not figuring these things out as they went along. If you look at history, you can see that there is essentially a blueprint for turning an open society into a dictatorship. That blueprint has been used again and again in more and less bloody, more and less terrifying ways. But it is always effective. It is very difficult and arduous to create and sustain a democracy – but history shows that closing one down is much simpler. You simply have to be willing to take the 10 steps.

As difficult as this is to contemplate, it is clear, if you are willing to look, that each of these 10 steps has already been initiated today in the United States by the Bush administration.

Many of us outside of the U.S. could see it happening, but our friends and relatives in America pooh poohed our observations.

OT – I am watching the replay of Mary Tillman’s testimony in front of Waxman’s committee today. She ripped them a new asshole and by implication Smirk’s crew. Tillman’s mother is pissed. We need more people like her speaking out.

I am also watching. ALL the witnesses were wonderful today.

I’m sorry but I did not feel strong enough to watch the hearings. What a tragedy and we do not know how many more cover- ups there were. Was there talk that he Pat Tillman might have been purposely shot because he was going to talk to Chomsky? (Note to MOD, please edit this if it’s just speculation)
I hope the Dems have the guts to go after the people responsible and give justice to the Tillmans and all Americans.

In the scheme of things it’s pretty unimportant, but am I the only person who is tremendously pissed off at the family that owns the Arizona Cardinals for selling naming rights to their new stadium instead of calling it “Pat Tillman Field?”

My cousins served in ‘Nam and the first Gulf war. My nephew is currently in Iraq and his grandpa is worried sick, like the rest of us. But they all supported Bush/Lieberman until last summer, when stories from soldiers started coming back ‘unfiltered’ to the Homeland.

Good Morning, Firepups!

Clear and mild this morning in central Jersey. Haven’t been around the ‘Lake much except as a lurker. Our basement flooded when the sump pump kicked out after the April 14th deluge, so early mornings last week were spent cleaning up the mess [which is still pretty messy]. Mr. NJP’s parents were both hospitalized over the past weekend, so much fretting around here about their long term needs.

Meanwhile, NJ’s gov is off the respirator. Yea! But Corzine’s still on heavy-duty pain killer meds, so Dick Codey remains acting gov.

Mr. NJP is off to stay with his dad, who comes home from the hospital today. He’ll be gone a few days, and then his sister will come for the weekend. Health problems for aging parents–the lament of middle age.

Oversight is a truly wonderful thing. Harry Reid seems to have been expecting the push back from the administration and is doing his own pushing back [three cheers for Democratic spines!]. I still have hope that Congress will do the right thing and end the awful war in Iraq.

I’m going out for bagels. Coffee’s hot, so help yourselves.

Like you, I’m heartened that every day, in every way, Harry Reid is acting more like a genuine Democrat. But if you haven’t caught the Daily Show clip showing him interrupting Nancy Pelosi and putting his arm around her condescendingly, it’s up on their website. The precise moral equivalent, I’m afraid, of that ambush rubdown Dubya gave to Angela Merkel some time back.

(And, unlike RG Joe, Reid has never even pretended to be prochoice. Still, every day in every way…)

I had an Epiphany this morning reading the following from think progress;

What’s truly pitiful and embarrassing is that this Senator understands these truths but hides behind a veil of anonymity, protecting his/her own political fortunes while the nation suffers.

I believe I came up with a scenario that would work and all we have to do is organize the strategy

look, the new leadership of the republican party are not republicans, they are fascists who have high jacked the party and their constituents

this is a fact not a speculation, there is nothing republican about this leadership…they are “neo cons” but they are not “extra concervative” they are radical in every sense of the word

so to restate

this leadership is neither republican nor Conservative and they have high jacked the party and their constituents

therefore, since the real republicans don’t want to be tossed from power for at least a generation, which is what will happen if they don’t do something about this administration. they can do something that will save their party and possibly save their jobs;

they can ouster the neo cons and their movement from the party

I don’t mean they should start a new party for themselves, I mean they should literally throw these fascists out of their party and reclaim their integrity.

now, I don’t know if they can actually do this legally but they can sure do it rhetorically

I GUARANTEE there are republicans that will get on board a movement like that

they are now hostages and all they have to be is enabled

once they effectively remove these fascists from their party impeachment will be WEEKS away, not months but weeks.

they will simply march into this administrations office and say in no uncertain terms;

“you will be voted out of office in the senate or you will resign, one or the other but you will no longer be president or vice president”

I know this will become apropos in a future thread but I won’t be around to post

Just read the Kucinich articles of impeachment. It’s all about misleading the public and Congress about Iraq. Nothing about all the other stuff.

I suppose the real reason that impeachment is off the table for Pelosi et al, is that a conviction requires 2/3 majority in the Senate, and the Repugs would never let that fly, no matter what the evidence. They’ve already proven that they will sit on every crime they investigate, so why would they listen to real evidence? They already know he did it.

Still, it’s depressing that this stuff is going nowhere. Let’s hope for some good subpeonas today. At least we get those.

2 schools of thought (well, maybe more than that) – 1) Leahy, Waxman and Conyers building a case for multiple impeachments, working towards getting the 2/3 Senate majority before Nancy steps in or 2)Impeachment ties them up pretty good for the next year or so. I prefer door number 1 myself.

My brother lives in NJ and had a flooded basement for his birthday on the 15th thanks to tree limbs and power lines. Is this a conspiricy to get NJ Dems?
