The Associated Press put together several quotes from astronauts who have travelled into space to orbit our planet about what our fragile, blue orb means to them. I thought this quote from Jim Lovell was especially poignant and wanted to share it with all of you:
"It's hard to appreciate the Earth when you're down right upon it because it's so huge.
"It gives you in an instant, just at a position 240,000 miles away from it, (an idea of) how insignificant we are, how fragile we are, and how fortunate we are to have a body that will allow us to enjoy the sky and the trees and the water … It's something that many people take for granted when they're born and they grow up within the environment. But they don't realize what they have. And I didn't till I left it."
-Jim Lovell, Apollo 8 and 13.
It is Earth Day today. Thought it might be nice to get some perspective from folks who have gotten that space-eye-view of the planet. If you are in the mood for a bit of additional music, might I suggest this lovely song from Sting entitled "Fragile." Lest we forget how fragile we are…
Taylor has the President's statement on Earth Day. Let's just say it's not exactly the most credible thing I've read lately. And I don't know why, but this NYTimes profile just made me smile this morning.

Good morning!
The nations’ Commader in Oil, giving a speech about protecting Mother Earth. How quaint and provincial.
The number one priority is a healthy planet. What have we got with out it?
How about our macho pres going up in one of those flights and actually looking at this small blue orb?
Anyone read “Cadillac Desert?” or any of Barry Lopez?

Besides, Sen. Bill Nelson used to go up into space, and it didn’t make him less of a dweeb.
Two questions. Who is the best Democrat on the issue of the environment? And who, as president would you trust most to roll back global warming?

Well, I know who your two favorite Democratic politicians are, so I’m going to guess its one of them. Umm…Hillary Clinton! Am I right?
If we believe the situation is critical and it should be our number one priority, isn’t the political road ahead of us clear? Doesn’t that road lead to Al Gore.
I just got back and looked at the previous thread. Don’t say Gore didn’t lose those debates– I saw them and Gore not only lost them, he made a complete fool of himself and of the Democratic party. He was sighing and acting like a petulant child. Even Dumbya looked good by comparison.
Gore picked Dumb Donna and Holy Joe, no one chose them for him. No one made him choose them.
He’s a founding member of the DLC, he supports NAFTA, he wants to send all our jobs overseas to countries with poor labor and environmental laws.
Wake up, ‘dogs!
It is a beautiful day outside. I can smell bacon in the pan, got my Costa Rican coffee at hand and I will go figure where to plant my patch of corn today, Hopi blue corn, Hopi sweet corn, and Hopi white corn. I love roasted corn much better than boiled.

Meanwhile, the garden is in, the early peach tree is looking heavy with fruit, the blueberries are ripening, the oranges and satsuma are flowering sweetly, the roses are blooming, and Gore’s campaign staff is getting together on their own. Sounds like a good day to me!

Rich Little was a star compared to the DC media elite. At least he did his job, even if he didn’t do it well.

This is all really good stuff. The feisty emptywheel had a post this week about the brilliant effectiveness of Abu’s stonewalling that should be added to this mix.
At first I was foolish enough to think that Abu had left a blindspot in his training. That he and his handlers didn’t realize that by saying he couldn’t recall where the original list came from and how he didn’t make the decision but takes responsibility for it–or whatever the hell he half-said–, in combination with Sampson’s testimony, that the list didn’t come from him… all points straight at the White House. That instead of “so there’s no evidence, no smoking gun, is this over and simply in the hands of the president,” there is now every reason to go after Goodling, Miers, and Rove.
But now it just seems like a dare, that Abu G. executed a carefully designed strategy to perfection. It’s hard to believe when he seems so incompetent. But the junta seems to be at the advanced stage of embracing the obvious, saying go ahead and try to come after us.
Makes me wonder if the D.C. US attorney Taylor, or whatever his name is, is going to be the Rubicon of this whole affair.
this might explain things :)
bg @ 83
Notwithstanding Edwards’ poor decision-making with his bloggers, I’m inclined to agree with Belafonte. Edwards is the one offering a plan for health care, for example, rather than just platitudes. And he’s sure enough of his ability to sell that plan that he feels he can afford to be honest about tax hikes. There’s time for others to get a straight story out, but right now, I have to lean toward Edwards as a default.

So far as I know, one of the first to use that term was Louis Bromfield, who was one of the main voices of the soil conservation movement of the 1940s, e.g., Pleasant Valley, 1945. But he contrasted “stewardship” to “ownership,” as in “We are stewards, not owners, of the land.” His point was the stewardship involves an obligation to protect and preserve the land for future generations. And he was alarmed that the fertile top-soil in the midwest was washing down to the Gulf of Mexico.

I know that a fellow named Jose Arguelles, an Art Professor at UC Davis, organized the 1st Annual Whole Earth Week (March 15-21, 1970). That event, held annually now on Mother’s Day, is still going strong. In the mid-80’s it was drawing 50-60,000 people. It is always a place where one can obtain information about environmental issues, alternative spiritualities, holistic health, political action, and hear great music…for free. In 1978 bands that played were Taj Mahal, Holly Near, Robbie Basho, Mimi Farina, and Queen Ida, and the following year Norton Bffalo, Country Joe and the Fish, Reggae artist Dennis Brown, Paul Winter, Bodie Wagner, and Queen Ida.
They have since decided to scale it down, and the bands are often more independent label artists, though Saturday usually includes one big name for the evening, but it still draws a large crowd.

LBJ and MacNamara were in his mind. I want to replay what was said to the president.
After they spoke of Reid reaching out to comfort the president, Wolf asked, “And was he comforted?”
I think it was Suzanne Malveaux who said, “No, I don’t think so.”
I think it’s going to take more than Reid to comfort this psycho (Bush). As in very, very professional help.
What has Bush wrought?

Climate change disaster strikes Australia.
http://tinyurl.com/2o86zz
“Australia has warned that it will have to switch off the water supply to the continent’s food bowl unless heavy rains break an epic drought – heralding what could be the first climate change-driven disaster to strike a developed nation.”
The Prime Minister, John Howard, a hardened climate-change sceptic, delivered dire tidings to the nation’s farmers yesterday. Unless there is significant rainfall in the next six to eight weeks, irrigation will be banned in the principal agricultural area. Crops such as rice, cotton and wine grapes will fail, citrus, olive and almond trees will die, along with livestock.
A ban on irrigation, which would remain in place until May next year, spells possible ruin for thousands of farmers, already debt-laden and in despair after six straight years of drought.
Australia is the only major industrialized country other than the U.S. to reject the Kyoto Protocol.
