John Amato of C&L, debating John Derbyshire on Alan Colmes show:
Amato: So Mr. Derbyshire, you are a coward. And if I saw you— face to face—I would call you a coward because you are.
Colmes: You care to respond?
Debyshire: Ah, no actually–I don't respond to abuse. I get a lot of abuse…
Amato: That's abuse? That's just fact.
Well you've got to give the Derb credit for giving voice to thoughts that all the other lizard brain couch potatos think but have better judgment than to say out loud. A valuable portrait of a consciousness riddled with wormholes to the wingnut alternate universe where we're winning in Iraq, George Bush is akin to Winston Churchill and 14 year-old girls are all hot for flabby, aging, pasty faced keyboard commandos.
No, really. S'true.

Jen who?
Does anyone but the NRO crowd take Derbyshire seriously?
So according to Derb, calling people cowards is abuse? Well then, he’s not only a coward, but abusive. Case closed.
Jenifer Aniston! Look at the link to 14 yr old girls then look at the John Derbyshire link this guy has hit his expiration date!

I’m not sure even THEY take him serious. He’s just background noise in their daily mantra they listen to in order to validate their own cowardice and stupidity rather than taking the painful step of actually learning or growing personally.
So, the reichwing solution to madmen on campus with guns is 1. more guns on campus 2. United93-type “bravery” and 3. close our borders and document the location of all mosques in the US.
Wow. However will we get our country back from these wingnuts?
We need more of this. It’s long past time to stop treating as rational the raving lunatics that are the right wing punditry. They’re raving mad, wandering the streets in their hospital gowns. But our corporate media treats them as if they’re fonts of wisdom. Even if the “journalists” are willing to elevate them, there’s no reason for sane guests to play along.

I think he’d just gotten finished calling Amato a liberal nutjob. Colmes called him on it.
My goodness, Ms Hamsher… how you sharpen your posts! I’ll bet most wingers never see you coming right at them, before it’s to late….)
Another bow from this pup.
I used to watch Underdog!
I did listen to the conversation of the two Johns. Derbyshire got a World’s Worst Person for that from KO the other day. Well deserved too if I might add.
Who knew Colmes had a radio show? Not I.
Hi Jane,
A sincere thank you for all you have done and continue to do.
I really doubt I’d have much sanity left if I hadn’t found this place during the Libby trial.
An oasis of logic and reason amid the BS.
I think a lot of people still haven’t come back since the servers went all weird.
Hit ‘em with the folding chair John! Off the top rope Jane!
Jennifer Aniston is the third hottest celeb on the planet.
Sandy Bullock is #2 with a bullet.
But Maureen O’Hara…*whew*.
She’s a beauty.

Me too! (Watch Underdog, that is.)
Anybody remember the wonderfully snarky send-up of superheroes on the radio back in the Sixties?
It’s Chiiickenmaan!!!! “He’s everywhere, he’s everywhere!”
Chickenman is the right title for these nutty twits.
What happened to the servers and when?
Didn’t even know who Derbyshire is – guess he’s Fox only and I only watch them when I know Wes Clark is gong to be on.

Greetings Jane and all the Lake, delurking just to let you know the shrub is wrong about Churchill not being a believer, his bodyguard of twenty years says that Churchill felt a divine guiding hand all through the war years.Thank you for your magnificient work and best wishes for the future.
Andrew Sullivan gave Derb (as he calls him) a right drubbing over the comments about hot children. Derb’s a creep and a perv.

Crash-ola. A bit earlier (about 4 pm my time, 7 pm Eastern).
I got in here just in time to read the front page posts, but then the links to comments just gave dead air (white page).
And eventually the front page wouldn’t even refresh. Went to gabbly to chat in the meantime.

Jane,
It’s really a pleasure to watch you regain your strength and kick some ass; and I do enjoy your humor!
Yup, you guessed it. John Derbyshite.
But he doesn’t respond to “abuse.”
Liam @ 26
There’s still a distinct difference between ‘felt’ and the Shrub’s idea of guidance. I don’t think Churchill was a fundementalist in his faith. He was a believer but that took a backseat to his duty, i’m betting.

Jane, I read the last post and wanted to let you know how proud I am of you. I am so sorry ‘Nancy’ won’t appear with you to hash out this business with NARAL. I would have paid to see that. She is hiding something. We need to keep digging until we find it.

DB @34-It was written in Feb 2001. The part that I noticed was right before the section you posted.
Comparing an accomplished young woman to a fictional psycho is disgusting. This guy is as bad as Limpballs.
Does he apply these rules to the Bush clan? One can only hope so.
Has anyone explained to him that the Constitution forbids that sort of thing (it’s called ‘attainder of blood’)?
Does he really want someone looking up his family tree to see if he can be blamed for the actions of his ancestors and of cousins he’s never heard of?
If so, he’s getting really close to the category of ‘needs headphones and a recording to tell him how to breathe’.
“It’s tme for your pills, Derb. Be a good boy and take them quickly.”
Using Imperial China, Stalin, and Nazi Germany to bolster an argument seems like something Mr. Buckley and Mrs. O’Bierne would find offensive.

Your Hilarious! Those two hated Nazi’s because they were on the OTHER side they think Hitler went to far on the “final solution ” . Stalin they oppose because he threatened to take away rich people’s money, but I really don’t see them to troubled by bush’s police state.

Chelsea is a Clinton. She bears the taint; and though not prosecutable in law, in custom and nature the taint cannot be ignored. All the great despotisms of the past — I’m not arguing for despotism as a principle, but they sure knew how to deal with potential trouble — recognized that the families of objectionable citizens were a continuing threat. In Stalin’s penal code it was a crime to be the wife or child of an “enemy of the people”. The Nazis used the same principle, which they called Sippenhaft, “clan liability”. In Imperial China, enemies of the state were punished “to the ninth degree”: that is, everyone in the offender’s own generation would be killed, and everyone related via four generations up, to the great-great-grandparents, and four generations down, to the great-great-grandchildren, would also be killed.
oh if only that would have been applied to the bushes.

I’m 34 years younger than Maureen O’Hara, and I’d marry her in a HEARTBEAT.
J would understand. Hell, she’d be there in St. Croix.
LooHoo, I can’t even drive to the store without my bottle of H2O. I can’t even imagine flying all the way to Chicago without it. I (hate to admit it) have a bionic hip which means I would have to deal with all the drama of proving why the alarms are going off, not to mentions the 14 different drugs I would have to bring along. If my doctor has his way I will be in the hospital for my second bionic hip around that time. I have thought about it though. Last year I followed along online it was awesome. So I will probably just do that again. If you saw me in person you would never know that I am disabled let alone how old I am. I look younger than my 51 years. I have an autoimmune disease that is ravaging my body and mind also a brain tumor. I’ll have to pass since I never know how I am going to feel etc. I will be there virtually though and my thoughts will be with you all.

Scarecrow @ 63 says:
I have to remind myself not to get too upset when I see some of the incredibly sexist pieces, realizing that it is both the times of the movie and the period it is set, but obviously, it could never be made the same way today.
Have you ever seen the film Only the Lonely with O’Hara, John Candy, Anthony Quinn, and Ally Sheedy? She plays off some of her scenes from the Quiet Man with Quinn. A bit of a hoot.
LooHoo,
I would love to do lunch.
Whoa, sensing a lot of paranoia over this site being down. I feel it too. Sites go down, my tinfoil hat goes on. I’ve said it before, the net is a huge threat to this criminal administration. And, I think they’re after us.

only slightly OT…Anyone else want someone to do a “Fantasy Island” cartoon, with little Herve (Gonzo) standing next to Ricardo Montalbon (Bush,) looking to the sky and saying “de Plame, de Plame!!!”?
JEP @ 81
Gonzo didn’t make the final cut at audition…Too much of a ’subservient lickspittle’ type to correctly capture the essence of Tattoo.
So…We pitched it to Dickie’s people, and he came through like a trooper – He owns the ‘moral midget’ franchise.

Here’s the Derb’s theme song:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=l3SZ_kLSz4A
I think Derbyshire could prove his mettle by arranging with a police department to don all the protective gear they can heap on him, give a policeman a weapon loaded with rubber bullets- he could know he was in no danger – and he should run toward that police officer who is firing his weapon (again, loaded with rubber bullets) without trying to do him harm.
And he should v-log it.
Or he could just shut up. But I would pay money to watch him grow feathers and piss himself.
the most contemptable aspect of Derbyshire’s presentation is how he uses debate “logic” to “validate” himself, how he feigns innocence when confronted with the implications of what he says. it’s quite ridiculous, on the face of it, a syntactical, facetious bit of word play that bears no resemblance to either the events as they happened or the subtext of what he wrote about it. the underlying viciousness of what he is implying, it’s snide and petty tone is a veneer to hide his vacuousness. he’s a pitiful caricature of a poseur.
derbyshire is a pimped up coulter.
Crooks and Liars site is not exactly the most liberal or democratic site on the web. The ’siteowner’ edits you by blocking your comment and then tells you to go elsewhere, if you don’t agree with his brand of ‘freedom’. Then, you are banned from commenting! Is this the same John Amato?
I just listened to the radio broadcast – shocking stuff. I dont read Derbyshire – just hear about him every so often. Listening to him is very sickening and I dont intend to do it again. Nor will I read him. Amato did a stand up job and he was right to say what he did…though I would have said the man is sick in the head and spirit, not just a coward. He must be so deeply damaged to attack dead kids like that – his contempt toward those kids – and yeah you old fart – they were KIDS! – was chilling. If I were one of his peers or friends, I would tell him to get help, lay off the sauce if there is any involved – and go the eff away.
