[FDL is so pleased to welcome Victoria Wulsin back for a chat. Please stop by in the comments and give her a big FDL welcome, but be polite and stay on topic. Any off-topic conversations should be taken to the prior thread. With that, please join me in welcoming Dr. Wulsin! -- CHS]
Let's welcome Doctor Victoria Wulsin back for her second Blue America live blog session. Her first one is archived here and you will get a great idea of just what an incredible candidate — and person — she is. Last year, of the 30 men and women our community supported in House races, we donated more money to Vic than to anyone else running, over $27,000 plus hundreds of radio spots our PAC placed independently.
Vic came very close to winning the election — in an area renowned for corrupt Republican vote counting overseen by the most egregiously corrupt Secretary of State in the nation (now out of office). Within days of the election I was urging her to consider running again. I was overjoyed last week when she announced she would do it. We spent some time on the phone Thursday and Friday and I'm firmly convinced that as good a candidate she was last year, she's supercharged this year! This is a very smart woman who knows how to learn from experiences.
Another big factor her supporters can feel optimistic about is how the fast-learners are now being joined by more and more Americans in their disdain for the Bush Regime and the rubber stampers like Mean Jean Schmidt who enable it and prop it up. Last year Vic got to 49% with virtually no assistance from Inside the Beltway. It was all grassroots and netroots. This year the grassroots and netroots are as fired up as ever — more so — and a more enlightened Van Hollen-led DCCC is already interested in Vic's campaign. Paul Hackett has told people he isn't interested in running for the seat and there doesn't appear to be any viable competition for a seat Vic needs only a couple thousand more votes to win.
Of course she is far better known throughout the district too, and she's starting from a powerful base of volunteers. Emily's List has already jumped into the campaign and when Rove was illegally urging the GSA to disregard to Hatch Act and come to the aid of vulnerable Republican incumbents, Schmidt was right on the top of his list. Interestingly, she may be as endangered from disgruntled Republicans as she is from Democrats and independents.
Even the Republican-leaning local media has been more evenhanded in their coverage of Schmidt lately. The Cincinnati Enquirer covered Schmidt's incomprehensible viewpoint on the treatment of wounded American vets at Walter Reed, as did the local TV stations.
Of course, the best case for the election of Vic — other than Vic herself — is Mean Jean. Many people in the area are still concerned that she's still promoting the importation of nuclear waste into the district, just upriver from Louisville and Cincinnati. "Radioactive exposure is permanent," Dr. Wulsin reminds me. "She thinks it's a jobs program."
But it's nutty attitudes like this that discourage real jobs from coming to OH-02. The Batavia Ford factory is closing; that's real jobs. Will employers want to locate somewhere that has a national laughing stock as a representative who is trying to import nuclear waste that could be a threat to their own families and employees?
Almost every answer I got to my questions to Vic was informed by her public health background. We talked about the tragedy at Virginia Tech and last week's tragedy at the Supreme Court and in both cases she was talking to me about health and healing. "There's no such thing as a 'partial birth abortion.' …Abortion isn't a good method of family planning. They should be legal, safe and rare. Education for women and for men is very important as are the accessibility of birth control pills, contraceptives, clinics where the patients aren't stigmatized."
When I asked her about Virginia Tech her immediate response was to talk about the warning signs that were so clear in the shooter and how society refused to deal with them. There was no support system. Gun control is a very tough issue in her district but she isn't ducking it. She feels that society has to distinguish between guns people are entitled to for recreation and self-defense — especially in rural areas where there isn't ready access to law enforcement — and guns for mass destruction. On the campaign trail she gets the feeling that half the NRA members she talks to agree with her. "People with untreated mental illnesses and with impaired judgment should not have guns; that's a challenge but not impossible."
And speaking of not ducking a tough issue, Vic, who campaigned against the war and occupation of Iraq in 2006, says she plans to hit on that issue even harder this year. "We can't solve their civil war. We should bring our troops home and as soon as possible." Similarly she feels she needs to talk to people in the district about the Constitution and how it has been under threat. "The level of miseducation, much of it from outlets like Fox, is unbelievable." She feels a need to talk with people in southwest Ohio about habeas corpus and why that's important to every single one of us.
I know these issues are important to every reader of this blog. And I know from the outpouring of dedication and generosity last year that lots of us understand why it's important to help a woman like Victoria Wulsin get into Congress where she will be a force that is a part of creative and fresh solutions, instead of a festering sore on the ass of every problem that we face like… well, you know who. I'd like to urge you to join me in donating to Vic's campaign and moving her from the bottom of our list towards the top.
24 hours from when this story was posted I'm going to put all the names of the people who have contributed into a bag and pull 12 out. Each of the 12 will get a copy of the new book by Jeffrey Feldman, Framing the Debate, a book about the power of communication in contemporary progressive politics. Jeffrey has autographed each book in an effort to help us raise some funds for Vic's campaign. If you already have a copy, just add .01 to your donation as a sign you don't want us to send you another.

Victoria!
Thank you for joining us here today. I was a supporter from AZ… and will be again with your next run.
Wulsin For Congress!!! Yes!!!!
Welcome!
Welcome, future Rep. Wulsin!
Am from Middletown and wish you well in your campaign.
Doc Wilson, thank you for running again. I live in Athens and have worked hard for years on many Democrats campaigns.(worked on the special election in your district between mean Jean and Hackett (he came so close)
As of late I worked on ( GOV Strickland, Senator Sherrod Brown and Congressman Zack Space) campaigns. While those of us who worked our butts off on these campaigns and were sad to lose Strickland as our Congressperson, we are certainly thrilled to have him as the GOVERNOR OF OHIO.
While knockeing on the doors of literally thousands of doors getting people registered in south eastern ohio and in inner city Cincinnati and Columbus. I heard many of the same complaints from the disenfranchised. “life does not change for us whether there is a Democrat or Republican in control, so what difference does it make”?
How can the difference between the two parties be framed in such a way that engages the people most beat down by the system?
How can HEALTH CARE FOR ALL, EQUITY IN EDUCATION, AND A LIVING WAGE (yes we passed an increase in the minimum in Ohio) be framed in an accurate way so that they become the real “pro life” issues. I am so tired of the right wing radicals taking pro-fetus and making that the focus of pro-life.
katymine,
Left comment on your question concerning Renzi’s national security comment on the last thread.
Vic here. Eager to hear your thoughts, ideas, and learn from you. Thank you Howie for having me on. And thank you to all the FDL community for support, encouragement, $$$, last time around – and this time. Let’s go!
Welcome back to FDL, Dr. Wulsin! We’re proud to be part of your team.
Yay!!
“Doc” is in the House! (Well, soon, very soon!)
Here’s a reminder of why Victoria Wulsin is one of our favorite Blue America candidates!
I also supported your campaign; in fact, you called me on the phone. Will be happy to support you once again. It is flabbergasting that the voters of your district would return Mean Jean Schmidt back to the House for another term, by whatever margin. What were they thinking?
Thanks Kathleen -
Thanks for all your work for Great Candidates – and look what great effect your work had. I think what we should say to disaffected voters who wonder “what’s the diff. between Repubs and Dems,” is to say,
Hey look – we already have lots of change with a Dem. U.S. Congress and Dem governor. To name a few:
* funding for stem cell research
* Medicare Part D: negotiation with drug companies will bring prices for seniors down
* Working to bring the troops back home
* Raising the federal minimum wage
* pursuing environmentally sound energy policy
I could go on – these are a few ways that ALREADY the Dems in power they have taken actions that WILL improve the lives of us in Southern Ohio – and in all of America. All of the world, as well.
And with one more Democrat in Congress we will do even more.
Doctor in the house! I’m in for your 2008 campaign, Dr. Wulsin, and very happy you could join us today. Your current Representative is a national embarassment. Anyone would be an improvement, but you are light-years better!
Best wishes for victory — please visit again to tell us about your campaign as it goes forward. I for one am eager to hear about your success penetrating the FOX-induced fog.
Thank you for your efforts.
Doc Your district covers a wide range of people and thinking from the well off area of Indian Hills to the inner city of Cincinnati and lower income whites, high unemployment rural areas in Appalachia that Democrats seem to have abandoned long ago.
Many people in this region claim to be “conservatives”
How do you think the Democrats could reclaim the root of the word conservative which is to conserve “to protect from waste or destruction” The Republicans have not been very conservative.
Do you think that it would be effective to focus on the ideas that we want to CONSERVE the lives of our military service people and use them only when absolutely necessary. That we want to CONSERVE the welfare of the children in Ohio by assuring they have access to a college education. That we want to CONSERVE our budget by checking and balancing spending. That we want to CONSERVE the enviroment by truely enforcing EPA standards in Ohio?
I would really like to see the Democrats grab onto the root meaning of conservative.
Dr. Wulsin, so glad you are running again!
Jacqrat, Barbara,
Thanks for your support.
As much as we tried to get ourselves out there – a lot of people still didn’t know there was an alternative to Schmidt.
During phone banking, often constituents would say they’d never heard of me. I’m new to politics – and name recognition helps when you’re running for office.
On the campaign trail, almost every Republican I spoke to became a Wulsin supporter after they got to talk with me.
Because of the shortened campaign period – because of the ‘05 Special election – there just wasn’t time to talk face-to-face with enough Repubs and Independents.
Thank you, also, for the tremendous personal sacrifice this extended campaign entails.
Vic,
The report is out on Abstinence Only education saying it essentually makes no difference with kids. How can we get some common sense into Congress on this issue? The other buggaboo is funding for those fake family planning clinics that have been getting Federal funds but only talk about having the baby, no mention of abortion. We need science back in this as the Supreme Court decision demonstrates that the good ol’ boys know what is best for women.
Kathleen,
Words are important. This time we have time to listen to what people want, and if conservative means supporting a balanced budget, then I’m a conservative;
if conservative means protecting the environment for future generations, then I’m conservative;
if conservative means going to war only when it’s the last resort, then I’m a conservative;
if conservative means upholding the US Constitution, and the checks and balances of government, then I’m conservative.
My – our – challenge will be to get THESE meanings to dominate the discussion.
you know it’s going to be a real treat having more people who’ve studied some science in congress
man these theo cratas are driving me NUTZ, trying to teach magic in science and history class, trying to teach abstinence as if it has some hope of being effective
get this, the republicans are actually going to bring in a rapturist to debate gore’s an incovenient truth
Dr. Victoria Wulsin, I am sure with valid voting machines you will win in a landslide the next election cycle
it will be great to have you
Mean Jean voted against the reduction in rates for student loans recently in the House. Fortunately this bill passed. With the scandalous corruption on student loans giving the government savings due to students as kickbacks to schools and others, what do you feel is the roll of a representative in supporting student’s needs regarding loans.
I believe Proctor and Gamble rates high in work enviroment standards and benefits for their workers. Yet enviromentally they have very little to be proud of,as well as much of the industry in Ohio
Along the Ohio river many of the counties have some of the highest cancer rates in the U.S and some of the poorest people. (coal burning power plants) I have talked with many Doctor friends in the Athens community and they often refer to this stretch of Ohio as “cancer alley”.
Doc do you know of any cancer studies that have taken place focused on this region?
How do you propose that these high cancer rates are examined and dealt with? Many of the people in these regions do not have health coverage
AZMatt,
Re comprehensive sex education – the only kind that’s been proven to decrease unplanned pregnancies and STDs -
the best way to promote this (and destroy the Abstinence Only mythology) is to elect people to Congress who use science and data – not ideology – to make decisions and policy. It’s a bonus when the Congresswoman is a public health expert, who’s worked at home and abroad, in inner city and suburb, to actually prevent unplanned pregnancies (and thus abortions) and STDs, including deadly AIDS.
Oh, kicked in $50 to get you to Washington! More in the future.
Victoria Wulsin @ 18
Sounds like you’ve got the beginnings of a nice commercial there, Doctor! Pair it with some nice contrasting “definitions” from Jean Schmidt, and a lot of folks in the middle will come around.
One small – but significant – example of my work in Comprehensive Sex Education occurred a couple years ago at my kids’ public high school. An abstinence-only curriculum was being introduced, partly because its sponsors offered textbooks, workbooks, curricula, supplies, etc FREE to the school. Well, not surprisingly an ad hoc of parents and administrators figured what a good deal. I was on the committee, thank God, and would not accept the first decision. I said we needed to get more input, etc.
I had a chance before the next meeting to talk to every member of the committee about what was right for OUR CHILDREN, and when we remet, we discarded the FREE (and dangerous) option, and implemented a comprehensive program. I want to do this on a national level.
Victoria Wulsin @ 18
Yes! Many of us are truely “conservatives”
I would like to help with your campaign by stirring up volunteers from your region. Many young folk from Athens at Xavier and Univ of Cinci. I have several nieces at Xavier ( I believe I heard you speak last fall at the Cintas center on the Xavier campus)
I will be sure to turn them in your direction for your upcoming campaign.
Peterr @ 24
EXACTLY THE POINT! FRAME THE TRUTH
Dr. Wulsin,
I supported you last November and I’ll do it this time as well. I haven’t read the comments yet but you’re a double winner for your district when you get elected to the House!
Dr. Wulsin,
I’ve already contributed again to your campaign. I grew up in Cincinnati, and my parents still live in Hyde Park. They were very grateful when I visited last year, and stopped by to pick up a sign at your headquarters that they could proudly display in their front yard near a busy intersection.
My dad’s a WWII vet, and still can’t get over Jean Schmidt’s vicious attack on a war hero like John Murtha.
Godspeed.
The whole health care debacle with veterans tells you where the current administration is coming from. There is a huge lack of accountibility with those folks. This war is killing public health services to folks who need it in this country. When you are elected I hope you can engage in these issues because you have been in the frontlines. The whole family planning policy for foreign aid needs to changed too.
GybeHo-
I attended an inner-city high school in East Cleveland, but I was able to go to the college of my dreams because of financial aid. It changed my life, and I would hope that every student who wants to go to college would have the same opportunity.
Our country may someday get to a point when the federal government does not need to help students afford higher education, but the reality right now is that many families across the nation cannot afford to send their children to college. Providing federal financial aid is one way in which the government can help make college affordable and it should continue to do so.
Education is incredibly important, for the student, of course, but also for the community and the country. The United States needs a smart, well-educated work force, and when someone goes to college, it helps everyone, so the government has a role in providing that education. It’s an investment in our future.
I assume you have given a great deal of thought as to how you plan to approach this campaign. What might you do that will improve the odds this time around? It does seem you have started earlier.
Yesterday the Supreme Court denied partial birth abortions. Judge Ginsberg in her descenting opinion agrued that the court is now injecting morals into their interpretation of the law. A dangerous precident. Also if a woman’s life is threathened this option is now denied. Do you have any thoughts on how dangerous this decision is?
Kathleen,
The state of Ohio maintains a cancer registry that shows that indeed the rates of cancer in southern and southwest Ohio are among the highest in the country. However, there have been no community-wide epidemiologic studies that link these rates to exposures that could explain the high incidence. The exposures could range from toxicants in the water, air, and soil; to lifestyle choices; to occupational hazards.
Not surprisingly, my first response would be to study the reasons WHY the people of southern Ohio are at high risk for cancer, and then mobilize to intervene.
Before knowing all the reasons for high rates of cancer, we do know enough to work to prevent additional carcinogens from entering our community. I’m thinking particularly of Schmidt’s idea to import nuclear waste into OH-2 – upriver from Cincinnati & Louisville. NOT a way to lower cancer rates.
AZ Matt, I agree completely that we need to improve our health care for veterans. Our troops make the ultimate sacrifice to put their lives on the line for their country, and the least we can do is to ensure they have access to quality health care when they return. When my opponent says that the criticism of Walter Reed Hospital is “overblown,” she’s showing a grave insensitivity to the hardship that our veterans have had to endure.
Doc
While running the Get out the Vote (GOTV) campaign in our region for Zac Space (took Ney’s spot) The DCCC came in to the region hot and heavy 2 months before the election last fall to give Space the extra punch to beat Joy Padgett.
I tried hard to convince them to hire the 18 and over folks in the Glouster, Trimble, Chauncey region (old coal mining towns) for the knocking on doors and registering people instead of only hiring the Ohio University students (generally all ready had jobs).
I met so many young people (and older) in these regions who needed jobs. I thought it would have reflected well on the Democratic party and demonstrated their commitment to these regions to hire locals for any jobs and training that were available.
What do you think about this?
Dear Dr. Wulsin,
Please forgive us if we come off as overeager, liberal groupies. It’s just that independent, clear-thinking adults like you and Ned Lamont are so hard to come by, and our nation needs your kind so badly.
ONe of my favorite books about cancer rates and the connection between enviromental and health issues is Dr. Sandra Steingraber’s “Living Downstream”. She addresses southeastern Ohio’s cancer rates and so much more
I tried to get her to Ohio University as a speaker, was not successful. I believe she lives in Illinois or Indianna.
AZ Matt @ 31
Yes, Vic is starting earlier…
But that is no reason to wait to contribute to her campaign! The goal is to help her build a fearsome “war chest” of funds, so that any “DINOS” (Democrats-in-name-only… Joe LIEberman, anyone?) that think they might jump into OH-02 are discouraged from doing so.
The more money Wulsin is able to raise early on, the less inclined other wanna-be’s will be to try to take that seat. Let’s help insure that the person who goes up against “Mean Jean” next go-around is OUR candidate.
Jean2k @ 36
Funny you should mention that, Jean! Vic was kind of a college roommate of Ned’s at one time!!
Thanks AZ Matt,
Yes, I have to start earlier to pick up that extra half-a-percent to get to Congress. We’ve learned a lot from last year’s election (and, by the way, we’re always looking for more ideas to win).
1. Use the netroots. I got to meet Markos last year last year; we have a great blogger locally – Chris Baker; and best of all, we have FDL who’s getting the word out around the world, that eventually leads to votes (whether it’s through $$$ and advertising, or through mobilizing volunteers as Kathleen has offered, or through better understanding the issues on which I’ll work in Congress – I know we can get more votes.
2. This round I can reach out to independents and find common ground.
3. This round Schmidt has a much longer track record for me to contrast with – how I will represent the people of OH-2 rather than the special interests – and the Administration – that she represents.
Dar Dr Wulsin,
Thank you for staying with us, running again, and clearly articulating the issues and what we can do in this country. I contributed to your campaign today, (& did in the past), will again, with my little pennies.
Thank you for being willing to serve this nation with your formidable talents. We will win this time around.
fahrender @ 27
Same here. Your 2008 campaign will be the first I contribute to.
Note: I’ll try to # the entry to which I’m responding so it’s a bit clearer to all of you. Vic
Welcome back, Ma’am. We’ll be delighted to have your back again, and send you as much cash as we can, as early as we can.
Victoria Wulsin @
18
Dr Wulsin,
I grew up in North Central KY, about 60 miles south of Cincinnati. Thank you for your first statement in this comment on the balanced budget. Much as I wish we could fund all of the liberal initiatives, the reality is, paying our bills IS a security issue. We have done exactly what the current administration promised not to do, pushed the debt onto future generations (not that these clowns have any connection to the truth or reality). With the mis-adventures in the Middle East and all the class warfare waged agains the middle class and poor, there are so many areas needing fixing. Thank you for your efforts to step in and try to bring sanity back.
Jacqrat @ 38
Yeah, we don’t need Vic having to waste money on a primary against some dilettante reactionary Democrat.
And Jacquie knows a lot more about this district than most people who don’t live in it. She’s the one who worked her ass off placing hundreds of our Blue America radio spots all over the western part of OH-02, far far from Cincinnati.
It is unbelievable how a person like Jean Schmidt could possibly beat Hackett or you (the Doc) even in such a region that has historically been glued to the Republican party. It defies logic.
We know that these historically Republican voters are coming “unglued” by the facts. These voters are beginning to vote the issues instead of the party line. Let’s keep pushing the FACTS
let’s hope that not only you win but that Hackett runs against Voinovich. Times up for the Republicans in Ohio
GybeHo @ 32
GybeHo, as a physician, I am firmly committed to keeping abortion safe, legal, and rare. We can reduce abortions through education and access to contraceptives. Criminalizing abortions threatens the health of women. In my work overseas in countries where abortion is illegal, I have seen young women die from self-induced abortions gone wrong. The role of government is to protect its citizens, not to interfere with medical care.
I agree with Justice Ginsberg that the Supreme Court should not impose their morals into their interpretation of the law.
An abortion at any stage is a tremendously difficult operation, but it’s a decision that should remain between a patient and her doctor.
Kathleen- I think it is great that you pushed for the campaign to hire people who need jobs to help with the campaign. Last year, our GOTV operation relied almost entirely on volunteers- from young children to retired doctors, and we found that they were incredibly motivated, and were the most effective at spreading the message. We haven’t yet formed a GOTV strategy for ‘08, but I hope that volunteers will be able to do most of the work.
Dr. Wulsin, we were happy to donate to your last campaign, and intend to do so again. Do you have a fund-raising goal?
Just checked the ActBlue page, so far about $700 has come in during this discussion which is a great start! Don’t be shy folks!
Victoria Wulsin @ 33
Dr. Wulsin, when working as an PSR-LA member with LA Safe Schools, we succeded in persuading the Los Angeles Unified School District to adopt the precautionary prinicple as the basis for their pest control policy.
The EU has adopted the precautionary principle as a basis for environmental and public helath legislation.
As physicians, we both know that epidimiological studies – while valuable and necesssary – can take years or decades.
While pursuing epidimiological studies, do you also support adoption of the precautionary prinicple as the basis for environmental and health protection in US Federal law?
[Modnote: please be sure to end open quotations with [/blockquote] with the all-important “/” to begin the word, thanks]
masaccio @ 51
Masaccio,
Last year I raised close to a million dollars – most of it in the final weeks – once folks realized that the race was winnable. It was great having enough $$$ for TV. This year I’ll need a lot more. Last year when I was a “nobody,” the Repubs sent out EIGHTEEN flyers right before the election slamming me. You can imagine what kind of lies and distortions will come out this time.
With your help, I’ll be ready.
Damn! There are some generous people here today! More than $1200 up today!
AZ Matt @ 52
We can definately use some $5 and $10 donations today to knock Vic out of the bottom line on our page.
AZ Matt @ 52
The first hundred of that was given by Howie. Just so you know he doesn’t just ASK. He gives, too.
Doc here is another issue that I have been perplexed by the last three elections. When I hear my peer group(I am 55) say “I am too busy” to work or volunteer for a campaign I almost scream. (even though I was able to get plenty of them to volunteer). Many of these folks are middle class and find plenty of time to go to the mall, play golf etc.
How do we get the message across that THE TIME IS NOW TO GET THE DEMOCRATS IN ..IN OHIO. NO TIME LIKE THE PRESENT.
I was able to get tons of my friends(16-25) children to volunteer and would often say to the young folk “YOU ARE SETTING SUCH A GOOD EXAMPLE FOR YOUR PARENTS”. This always gets a laugh, and it is often the truth.
I think a commercial with young folk and seniors addressing volunteering as a civic duty would be very effective.
How do you think we can get more people involved in your campaign and others?
kirk murphy @ 53
Dr Murphy,
Yes, I’m a supporter of the Precautionary Principle. One of the major reasons I’m running is to make the world a better place for future generations, and the Precautionary Principle is a straightforward method for doing just that.
Thanks for reminding me – and the readers – how this can play a role in keeping nuclear waste out of farmland, aquifers, and citizens’ back yards.
howieklein @

I can’t afford to come and read these comments very often. That one was so on point that I kicked in another sizable contribution.
Would you care to share your thoughts if any, on bringing Card and Rice before Waxman to answer certain questions?
Even though I live in California, I was more than happy to contribute to such fantastic woman. We could use a few hundred more like you in Congress. Living across country makes it impossible for me to help other than financially, but again I stand ready to contribute. Here’s to you Vic!
Ohio is number 2 or 3 in the nation in poor air quality and floats back and forth between 3-5 in poor water quality. Will you be tougher in your region on the enforcement of enviromental standards?
How do you feel about so called socialized medicine?
Dr. Wulsin,
Bless you!
You’re a physician after my own heart.
Thanks for your reply and thanks for your courtesy, but please feel free to use my first name (’most everybody does, and I like that).
I look forward to addressing you as Congresswoman.
Oklahoma kiddo @

Don’t you mean universal health?
tbsa @ 61
Dear TBSA,
Thanks for your support; it really encourages me! Thanks for spreading the word,
Vic
Raising money for the Doc’s campaign is obviously huge. I believe this district came in second in the nation for raising funds for Bush.
SnarKassandra @ 66
Exactly.
TeddySanFran @ 16
Dear Teddy – Thank YOU for getting involved so early too!
howieklein @ 55
AZ Matt & Howie,
There’s something especially meaningful about the $5 donations – they represent the grassroots. I’m getting a little teary, remembering that ultimately what government is all about is those of us who are CITIZENS, the “OF the people” Lincoln spoke about. Yeah, it’s great to get $2300 from folks who can afford it. But the $5 are heartwarming.
Do you think Hackett will run for Senate?
I sure as hell hope so! While we all know Senator Brown will try to set things right for Ohio in D.C., I was sad to watch Hackett (he visited Athens) so graciously step aside (after Brown said no and then yes to running for Senate).
DOC WULSIN FOR CONGRESS
PAUL HACKETT FOR SENATE
kathleen @ 58
Kathleen-
I think that the best way to get people involved in volunteering and politics is by doing exactly what you are doing- talking to them, asking them to help out, showing them that volunteering can be fun.
I’m new to politics, myself, and I decided to get involved partly because of the influence of my kids. Some people really don’t have time to volunteer, and some people just never will. But I’ve found that most of my friends who were never involved in politics became very excited as soon as politics became more personal for them. Now they love Ted Strickland, Sherrod Brown, even Nancy Pelosi- all people who they hadn’t heard of just a couple years ago.
I just caught this story at CNET yesterday. What kind of an impact do you think it will have?
Victoria Wulsin @ 70
Just kicked in a second $50 since Mr. Klein is so generous! Thank you Howie!
It is not too early for becoming involved. This goes for all elective offices.
SnarKassandra @ 66
Universal health care is something most other developed countries–and many developing countries–take for granted. The fact that 40 million Americans have no health coverage shows how much work we have to do on this issue. Seeing Republican governors like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Mitt Romney embrace universal health care in California and Massachusetts demonstrates that we have real opportunity to make progress on more affordable, accessible health care.
Aeolus @ 59
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
I’d like to match all the $5.00 contributions that come in between now and when Vic has to leave. So if anyone is wondering if $5.00 helps, the answer is YES. Twenty people on FDL that give $5 each today will have caused Vic’s campaign to grow by $200. I remember Jacquie telling me she got some station in Portsmouth to give her a whole run of radio spots for $7.50 each. She’ll get a better deal this year! Here’s the Blue America link.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 69
The Republicans will and do call “universal health care” ’socialized medicine’. They will use this unsavory tactic.
Why do the repubs hate the word socialized so much?
Hi Dr. Wulsin, I’m late to the thread but I was proud to donate to your campaign in 2006 and I’m doing so again right now!
P.S. I’m in OH-15, we came oh so close there, too.
On the Volunteering issue. I think VETS can be tapped big time as volunteers. My father and 3 uncles are all WWII Vets and they hopped on the volunteer train the past two elections. Many of the VETS that I talked with in VFW’s and Moose lodges in these small southeastern Ohio towns are fed up with most of the what these old gents call “chickenhawk” REPUBLICANS.
The Republicans will and do call “universal health care” ’socialized medicine’. They will use this unsavory tactic.
The governator, is framing the argument as affordable health care for everyone. He is facing a sizable backlash from his side of the isle. Considering the state legislature is controlled by dems in a blue state I am hopeful.
melfeasance @ 74
Dear Malfeasance,
Blogging is an incredibly powerful form of speech. It’s democracy in action – because everyone has an equal voice. I don’t think our rights under the Constitution should be limited.
Dr Wuslin I am 15 and do not have a bank account or my own paypal yet, but I will ask the adults in my house to look at this thread later today.
I volunteered for a political campaign in Texas last summer and they didn’t have a very organized campaign office and lost a lot of volunteers cause we felt like we were wasting our time. If you reach out to Young Dems in the high schools near you, you can get great volunteers. Please have a plan for things they can do besides put paper in the copy machine.
ifthethunderdontgetya @ 81
Dear If the Thunder Don’t get ya,
Yes the 15th was a heartbreaker. I’m hoping to hear that Mary Jo re-enters SOON. And thanks for spreading your support to the 2nd.
kathleen @ 82
We had lots of vets volunteer for us last year. As you can imagine, they were furious over Schmidt’s ‘coward’ comment and really mobilized to support me. It was great having them on board.
OK, Howie, you wore me down – I just kicked in $30 (plus ActBlue tip, of course). for a great cause!
Of all the candidates I supported with cash last year, Dr. Wulsin is the only one who handwrote a note to thank me, a charming note, and let me say I appreciated it.
SnarKassandra @ 85
Cassie is a wonderful young person with her own political blog who likes to tell conservative young twits where to go and makes very insightful comments until Aunt Besty makes her go to bed!
Ignorance and dogma perhaps? This term is anti-Adam Smith and anti-capitalistic in their view. What it really is about it maximizing profit for the wealthy right wing, no matter the cost in fairness. Greed. Perhaps take a look at Senator Frist’s, MD, record on such matters.
AZ Matt @ 90
Nope, Aunt Betsy steals the laptop and my brother sends me to bed!
SnarKassandra @ 85
SnarKassandra, kudos for getting involved in politics at an early age. Some older folks say that “kids these days” don’t take a stand on important issues. But young folks were an important part of our campaign last year. One member of my staff was a high school student who began volunteering and was then hired on to work after school. He started the first Democrats Club at his high school, and was instrumental in organizing through facebook.com and other online communities.
Dr Wulsin — Shame was a powerful motivator in Virginia last year (post-macaca). People don’t want to be represented by a national laughingstock. However, it can be unwise for the candidate herself to make these connections, as it can come across to voters as mocking THEM, not their representative.
Will you plan for surrogates to focus on the embarassment your current Congresswoman brings on the district? Something like a highlights reel?
Never forget the success of the Connecticut Kiss Float — folks love some theatre with their politics!
Oklahoma kiddo @ 91
Getting back to SnarKassandra’s comment #80 @ 12:08 pm. ;0)
Doc,,
Ohio is number 2 or 3 in the nation in poor air quality and floats back and forth between 3-5 in poor water quality. Will you be tougher in your region on the enforcement of enviromental standards?
Thanks Doc and FDL for another blog forum!
SnarKassandra @ 92
Well, at least I got the wonderful part right!
Dr. Wulsin and Howie.. you both make a poor man smile.
This is thrilling news. You will win the seat this time, I just know it!!
In for a little today and more later.
Thank you!
TeddySanFran @ 94
Dear TeddySanFran,
We’ve seen that Schmidt does a fine job of embarrassing herself and doesn’t need me or the WFC surrogates “helping” her out. My approach is to focus on showing people that I am an honest leader who has helped southern Ohio and will do even more for them as their Congresswoman.
I’m so glad you’re running again! I’m in Zack Space’s district.
It will be so nice to have gifted, talented people in office all across the state.
The solid impression here is that with all those struggling with health care, the issue of universal health care is a winner.
Go Dr.Vic! We got things moving last year, eh?
Now we are really on a roll…and we’re going to win!
Our country is demanding nothing less.
Your work ethic and persistence amid formidable challenges is an inspiration to progressives and other highly disgruntled citizens everywhere. I hope you are prepared to lead the community through the difficulties ahead.
Let me say this again…
You are going to win!.
GybeHo @

Did not know this…thanks. One more reason mean jean has to go.
What about the prescription drug fiasco passed under the Bush ‘leadership’? Is this an issue that can be used against the GOP?
kathleen @ 96
Dear Kathleen -
I’m an epidemiologist, and I’ve seen first hand the adverse health effects that are caused by pollution. Not only should current environmental standards be enforced, they need to be re-evaluated to be sure they’re sufficient to protect our health. Maybe you know I used to work at NIOSH (the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) and our studies are used to determine environmental limits. The research performed at NIOSH could play an even larger role in determining safe levels.
Just kicked in 25 from out here in Cali. All I can say is that I’m tired of the direction we’ve been going these last 7 years. I’m very impressed with Dr. Wulsin’s record and vision.
Go Vic go!
hey doc wulsin – glad you’re gracing the lake – yeah i’m late to the room so i’m catching up – here’s hoping you become the new rep in ohio
Dr. Wulsin, I’ve been lurking through both your FDL chats and I hear an authentic voice through my inter-toobz. I wish you would move to CA, but since you seem committed to OH, I’ve split my contribution between you and Charlie Brown.
Here’s to you cresting the wave of the new tide in America.
PS My cousin and my husband’s best buddy are both epidemioligists, too. You must be a good person :)
Victoria Wulsin @ 99
Darn… I was giddy at the thought of a “Mean Jean on the floor in the ladies’ room” Paper-mache “Homage” on the back of someone’s pickup, too.
EDIT: “I keeed, I keeed!” Just kidding. Sorta.
bloodhound SF @ 107
Going to town today! More than 29 contributions today and Doc has moved up on the conributions list! Keep it up as this will be an important race for Ohio and the country!
YOU ARE THE WOMAN FOR THIS JOB…
i’ll be able to send some support come may are we to send it via blue america or direct?
Oklahoma kiddo @ 102
It is, it is…. I just call it Medicare for All…
Factor #1 with the VT tragedy was there was no safety net for Cho. How could Healthcare for All have helped that young man with care and resources?
After Howard Dean, we need more Real Doctors in the house! Kicked in $50.00… have to hold up my end in Arizona!
And Victoria… loved the personal note last year but save the money, your WIN will be my Thank you!
kathleen @ 112
And she knows what science is too!!
i’d just like to go back and reiterate what both kathleen and Dr. Wulsin said about the use of the word Conservative and how Democrats need to teach the Republics about the true meaning of that word. Democrats ought to take possession of it and use it well.
juslin @ 112
Blue America is direct. The contribution you make here goes directly into Vic’s account and Blue America sends her a check every two weeks for whatever comes in. I told her on the phone I expected we’d raise around $1,000 today. I’m proud to tell you that we just went over the $2,500 mark.
SnarKassandra @ 80
One of the Republicans’ “big lie” tactics is “socialism = communism”. It’s worked well for them for decades. They create a mental association with the Soviet Union, and avoid making any factual argument.
(I’m a bit tapped out with the post-tax-day blues, but I can manage $5.)
2500?
hip hip hooray!!
Redshift @ 118
Howie is matching that today.
Dr. Wulsin,
I just moved out to the Columbus area, so while not in your district, I will be excited to see Democrats continue what they started in 2006 all across the state. We’ve got to figure out how to send Tiberi packing here.
My wife’s family lives on the west side of Cincinnati (Chabot’s district, another one bound for defeat), so I will definitely do my best to make it to some events when we are down there.
Good luck. You were such a great candidate and I have so much confidence you’re gonna do it this time!
Mommybrain @ 109
Dear Mommybrain -
Thanks for helping me work with Charlie Brown and vice versa.
Great for California and Ohio to be sisters in the struggle for economic and social justice.
No question, Schmidt has got to go. Last year, she copied an article on Medicare off of Deb Pryce’s website, and published it under her own name in multiple newspapers. It was almost identical, word-for-word, except Schmidt put her own name on it. I’d get kicked out of school for that kind of plagiarism, but she gets sent to Congress. Some justice. You must have been peeved, Vic, huh?
Dear Dr. Wulsin,
I hope you are truly “feeling the love” from us today. We were DELIGHTED to hear of your decision to run again.
We have your back. We have definitely HAD ENOUGH of the likes of Jean Schmidt.
Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart.
I hear my doctor tell me that the insurance industry is a huge part of the health care problem. Is that true?
fahrender @
116
In flipping through the channels last night we found a special on te Travel Channel about the Grand Canyon. When speaking about David Brower and Martin Litton, early Sierra Club founders, they called them Conservationists.
This is the proper term. Environmentalist is a perjorative cooked up by the right, imho, to mock our concern and is not interchangable with conservationist.
Ever notice how many people grimace or give some other disdainful tell when you use “environmentalist”? It’s another code word.
Crush Mean Jean!!!!
I just love the way the right wing says liibb..uurr..aall.
bloodhound SF @ 122
Dear Bloodhound SF,
Our elected leaders should be role models for our children. They should have the qualities we want our children to have: honesty, responsibility, generosity, community. And our elected officials must adhere to the same laws and standards that the public is required to obey.
Dr.Vic: What do you propose doing about the so-called war on drugs. Should congress move to recognize medical benefits of certain banned substances?
Oklahoma kiddo @ 125
Well, health insurance is certainly a wonderful thing–without it most of us couldn’t afford lifesaving medical procedures. But you have to remember that insurance companies–like any corporation–keep their eye on the bottom line. So if they can boost profits by cutting corners, they may well take that opportunity. I think the focus has got to be on quality health care, and patients should always be put before profits.
Sorry to be late – but delighted to note that the first 2 comments were from AZ – me too. Haven’t you got a sister/brother/child/friend who could come run in the Red Lands?
Anyway, it’s great to see you back, Doc, and I promise I’ll send even more $ this time.
Dr. Wulsin -
As you look at the different local models for universal health care, which model strikes you as best able to return to health services the 30-40% of our health insurance premiums now going to megacorp profits and perks?
As physicians know and patients often don’t, Medicare’s administrative costs run less* than 4-5%.
Here in CA (and – IIRC – MA) – the universal coverage plans still offer the for-profit insurers their slurp at the premium stream.
Both proposals mandate citizens (with the means) to purchase health insurance (so good so far).
Arnold’s fails to provide any choice.
Effectively, we Californians would all be forced to buy from Big Insurance.
And Big Insurance will keep getting their 30-40% cut.
[IIRC the MA plan also keeps the Insurance megacorps fat and happy grazing off the premium food chain….]
CA State Rep Sheila Kuehl’s SB 840 creating a public, non-profit universal health plan passed both CA state houses – but Schwarzenegger vetoed it.
As we all need health insurance, but none of us need the private insurance megacorps, would you support the redirection of our health insurance premiums away from the private sector and back into the public funding pool for universal health care?
————-
note: edited comment for commenter’s OCD…
(* except for Part D and Medicare Advnatadge – both designed by GOP lobbyists/GOP Congress to enrich health megacorps).
PS – re my post above
err.. how embarassing.
First time I ever contact you, and I misspelled epidemiology.
Twice.
oopz.
Dear Dr. Wulsin,
I contributed to you during the last campaign and have just done so.
I have my own ActBlue page and will add you to it for this round, as I did for last.
I’m working again for Andrew Duck, from MD-06. I hope BOTH of you can join the next Congress.
I hope I am not too late, but I was wondering what else we can do to help end the Iraq mess besides calling our Congress people every week? Do we need to call them every day? It seems what has happened so far isn’t working like we hoped. At least they aren’t showing enough resolve as I think a lot of us would like.
kirk murphy @ 132
Dr Murphy,
Any universal health care plan has to include mechanisms to ensure that it is affordable for everybody. If some combination of public/private insurance ultimately proves to be the most effective, we have to make sure that the care itself is equitable between rich and poor. The system has to be designed to maximize public health, not insurance profits.
Mauimom @ 133
Dear MauiMom -
Thank you for your work to bring justice and peace to our country.
neokneme @ 130
The so-called “war on drugs” has focused almost entirely on the supply side of the problem, ignoring the demand that fuels the drug trade. As long as people are addicted to drugs, the black market will find a way to deliver them. If we can help users overcome their addiction, demand will dry up, the only long-term solution.
Joe Klein’s conscience @ 134
Joe Klein -
1. Calling our Congresspeople is essential. Other things we can do:
2. Educate ourselves and others about what’s going on ON THE GROUND in Iraq.
3. Organize a film screening or panel or discussion at your school or work to spread the word. My son just got a group to watch “Why we Fight” at his college, and 40 students came. That leads to more involvement.
4. Contribute to and volunteer for candidates who have international experience and a commitment to diplomacy rather than destruction.
Dear Joe Klein CONSCIENCE,
Sorry I got your name wrong, earlier.
Thanks Dr. Wulsin -
I’m thrilled to think we’ll know you as Congresswoman Wulsin.
I’m wondering if that would make you the first epidemiologist elected to Congress.
What a powerful perspective you’ll bring to public policy.
Most importantly, I look forward to all the good you’ll do for us on the Hill.
I don’t think JokeLine has a conscience, but that’s just me.
The next 11 year solar cycle is starting now. It may be the most disruptive in modern history.
Watch this space.com video for a teaser of what lies ahead. More than just your pager may be at risk.
Dr. Vic — this will be a significant issue in the years to come I dare say. I hope you are aware of this.
I’m late to the discussion but I want to say I’ll contribute again for your next campaign. I’m ashamed to say I never contributed to a campaign of any kind prior to ‘06 but I was so impressed by your participation here last year that I gave to five different candidates outside my home district.
Way up at #30 Dr Wulsin said:
“I attended an inner-city high school in East Cleveland, but I was able to go to the college of my dreams because of financial aid.
It changed my life, and I would hope that every student who wants to go to college would have the same opportunity.”
I think this is another powerful message to swing voters – especially when the point is clearly made that those ladders are being pulled up everywhere, often by the very folks who already used them, and often for trivial reasons.
_______
And on another of the big topics of the day….. as a Canuckistanian who started a family while living in the States, I suggest that you all just make the leap and go Universal.
And here’s the little secret so many folks don’t want you to know—-when it’s Universal it really is. Which means, get this, you can go to any doctor and any hospital anywhere in the entire country and get care.
Anywhere.
Crazy mixed-up socialism that, huh?
.
well howie, I hope I made the deadline, dial-up contributions take forever——-you said you would match contributions 0f $5 with $5–I made it for more and made a $5 tip to act blue-
Doctor Wulsin-don’t know if you are still on-line-I travel right next to your district when i visit friends and family across the state from where i live—last thanksgiving it made me sick knowing that you lost when i saw the signs to towns in your district……..that is why i contributed today.
I entered late into the thread, but what i know of you and what i have read today i feel confident that you will win the next round. thanks for entering back into the race.
dmac @ 145
Thanks– and don’t worry; I’m very liberal about that kind of thing.
Brownandserve @ 143
Dear BrownandServe,
I was proud to see lots of people get involved in my campaign that had never been involved in politics before. I hope this is the start of a continuing trend. I’m so glad you’re on board. Welcome!
doc wulsin i hope when you get to congress as i’ m sure you’ll win this time – please do something about those of us who get no help in paying for prescibed meds – it seems i’m always $1 or 2 over the limit for ANY program… as i’m not yet into medicare i fall between the cracks…its time someone looked after folks like myself
Hi Howie… And Hello Dr. Wulsiin. Welcome to The Lake and welcome back to BlueAmerica.
Dr Wulsin:
I am delighted that you have decided to run again. You’re now in the company of folks like Darcie Burner (WA-08) and Larry Kissell (NC-08)who, along with you, will be members of the class of 08.
The GOP brand is damaged goods and there will be major repair work needed at all levels of government.
You will ave lots of support from the blogosphere.
Doctor Wulsin, if you’re still here, what is one of the things you hear from contituents that if you had a magic wand to pass it in congress-what would it be?
RossK @ 145
*******
Hey, RossK, what’s the truth about the “endless waiting” and “bargain basement quality” lines opponents of universal care like to spout? What’s your experience?
Dr. Wulsin, thanks for the wonderful forum today. Come back anytime. We’ll always love to hear from you. And we’ll be following this race avidly, as I’m sure you can guess.
Thanks everybody for stopping by and thanks for the great show of generosity and support for Vic today. I’m going to have to go now. I’m meeting Tommy Yum in a few hours to talk about a song for next year. But don’t forget, next week: Congressman John Hall (D-NY)– same place, same station.
Anyone in the San Diego area, come say hi Friday night. As part of the California State Democratic Convention we’re having a live and blog fundraiser for Jerry McNerney and Charlie Brown. Stop by and meet Jerry, Charlie and me next Friday night. The address, time and all the info is here.
Howie & all the FDL-ers,
What a pleasure it is to talk with you, get to know you, and feel your support. This will be a long and exciting race, and I look forward to lots more chats.
Stay in touch, too. My website should be up within a few days. (www.wulsinforcongress.com) and probably Howie will be the first to know. Thanks again, I’m so honored to have your support.
Vic
excellent posting today doc wulsin and howie!! thanks and do come again and again etc…….:o)

I used to post under a different name, which was meant as a compliment of Jane, but I decided this one would be better.
thanks for taking the time to talk with us Dr. Wulsin!
Come back soon!
Thank You Howie for the great work you are doing and have done!
Thank you, Dr Wulsin, for chatting today — and thanks as always to Howie for organizing these extraordinary opportunities at FDL.
Thank you, Dr. Wulsin – I look forward to your next visit and your campaign’s success.
Thanks to Howie for creating these wonderful encounters.
Thanks to Howie for organizing the Wulsin positions and her visit. I’m in the process of moving, planning to do this one more slowly than the last two or three, so am just arriving at this site. I gave a small contribution to Victoria last round and will do it again. Best to Vic, so glad she’s off and running.
Dr. Wulsin, I’m late to the Lake today. I’ve sent you a contribution from California with a tip to Blue America. I’d like to see universal health care enacted. My group health insurance, a large professional group of thousands, is soon to be canceled by one of the Blue’s. It feels good to be an early contributor to your campaign.
“and a more enlightened Van Hollen-led DCCC is already interested in Vic’s campaign.”
The DCCC is actually looking at some of those racestheyignored last time around, ALREADY, and it bodes well for the Democrats in 2008, if the DCCC had gotten into some of these races early-on last time around, we might have seen 40 seats turn over.
Howard Dean’s 50-state strategy has done more for the future of the Democratic Party than any other chapter in this story, and will, hopefully, prove even more effective next time around.
JEP
PS thanx to Howie for the event, and to the Doc for running in the first place, and to FDL for giving us this early forum.
How many other future lawmakers might we see on this blog between now and the election?
I hear Iowa’s 3rd District Doctor Spencer is also officially back on the campaign trail, he too ran much closer than the “top poundits” imagined, maybe he’s worth some of Van Hollen’s time, effort and capital.
Van Hollen sure looked like a real top notch lawmaker in recent committee hearings, if he takes that image with him through the DCCC’s next big chore (2008) it can only be good for Democrats, rank and file, and those running for office.
dearest mods -
bless you all.
