I'm here to piggyback on the excellent posts done by Jane and Brendan on NARAL's Nancy Keenan and her strange Susan-Estrich-like ineffectiveness as head of what was once a top-shelf pro-choice advocacy group.
Many of you were wondering, as the news of the Roberts Court's decision criminializing the safest form of late-term abortion had spread, if Ms. Keenan — whose refusal to back a filibuster of Alito, and support for Rape Gurney Joe (against the express wishes of NARAL's own Connecticut chapter!) — made the Roberts Court possible — would have the gall to use the emergency she'd created as a pretext for putting out the collection plate. Sure enough, right on schedule yesterday afternoon, NARAL Nancy put out a begging letter. Excerpts therefrom:
So how are we going to defeat this ban now that Bush’s appointees upheld it? Simple. We’re starting an all-out campaign to support the Freedom of Choice Act.
Here’s how it starts: The Freedom of Choice Act is legislation that would codify Roe v. Wade into law, and guarantee the right to choose for generations to come. But this legislation is just the first step. To ensure we never face an attack like this again, we’re not stopping until we’ve elected a pro-choice president in 2008!
Sound impossible? You’ve already proven it’s not.
As a supporter of NARAL Pro-Choice America, you helped send 1.4 million pro-choice Americans to the March for Women’s Lives. You helped defeat the South Dakota abortion ban. You elected 26 pro-choice leaders to Congress in 2006. You are a part of the million-member-strong political leader of the pro-choice movement. Together, we can make this happen, but we need your help to fund the fight. Click here to help.
It’s up to us. We can do it. Click here to make your gift today.
What Ms. Keenan isn’t telling you is that Tuesday’s Scalia-Roberts Supreme Court ruling does an end run around Roe while leaving it technically intact. As for the Freedom of Choice Act, while it may well indeed undo Tuesday's Roberts Court abomination if passed, NARAL’s own site mentions that it’s been floating around Congress since 1989 — eighteen years — and hasn’t got anywhere.
By the way: I couldn’t find the actual text of the bill on NARAL’s website; all the references I can find are just variations of the same vague smiley-face verbiage that came with the begging letter. But links to it are available over at an anti-choice site run by the National Right to Life Committee, complete with links for a current list of sponsors. It's scary when the other side has better info on your own bills than what your side is giving you.
Comparing and contrasting these two sites just helps to illustrate yet another example of how Keenan’s not doing much of anything with the cash she’s Hoovering up from us. I swear, I could pick five people at random from the comments thread for this post and they could do a much better job of online outreach, to say nothing of political outreach.

Hello, everyone!

Gotta go take care of dinner — will be back soon (my internet is being poky tonight)!

Thanks for the Joe Lieberman, there, NARAL.
Have we found out the composition of the NARAL Board of Directors? Is there a way to bring real pressure to bear on this careerist? She’s proven again and again which side of the Beltway her bread’s buttered on. NARAL’s skirts are what Boxer hid behind in defending RGJoe’s pro-choice “credentials” even after the Alito vote and his short-ride comment.
Keenan must go.

You know, my contempt for Joe Lieberman knows no bounds. I hope every time somebody utters the word “Lieberman,” Al Gore feels a slight pang for elevating that tool to the political A-list.

There’s a lot of dirtballs to be angry with this week, as per usual.
But I’d like to see a list of the Hannibal of Connecticut’s strategeric prognostications wrt Iraq, just for the record.
From the Speaker’s email “House Call” today:
Supreme Court Criminalizes Late-Term Abortions
No mention of Nancy Keenan’s bill.
I’m bored.
So, Gonzo didn’t resign today?
The decision is scary in one particular way. The one that matters.
It interferes with medical decisions to satiate raging ideologues. That is wrong. Always.
Let’s suppose you had a tumor that was certainly cancerous. Now let’s suppose you had a high-risk pregnancy – say, identical triplets with transfusion syndrome, at 20 weeks. Now let’s suppose the doctors best advice was “this pregnancy is almost certain to result badly anyway, but you have an opportunity to give your wife a better chance of survival and give your existing child a chance of growing up with a mother. This is not exactly a theoretical situation – it’s one that would have happened to me if it wasn’t Christmas time and so they didn’t have an appointment and they didn’t notice the tumor.
Why fhe fuck does any government entity have the right to interfere in that medical decision? Because they are theocratic fuckwits who don’t give a fucking rats turd what happens to actual people. Except, of course, for the universal Republican rule “when it happens to us, it’s different” aka the “Dick Cheney lesbian daughter” rule.
[Edited by moderator: No advocating violence against public officials. Period.]
P.S. I don’t know what we would have decided – but it’s our damn decision to make, not some assholes in Congress who will never, ever, ever meet us. We have two healthy girls, but we are lucky beyond belief. Lucky that we have two girls instead of none, lucky that (so far) they still have a mother, lucky that they aren’t severely disabled.
On Olbermann, a clip of Bush saying “there is ample time to debate this war”.

DING!
Is it legally clear, now, what the boundaries are for a statute? I’m still trying to absorb the analyses, but if the court has flipped against a woman’s right, and is prepared to dictate what she must accept for her own good, it’s not clear to me that a statute reaffirming the woman’s right would be assumed to be constitutional by the S.Ct’s current majority. When Kennedy presumed to tell women what’s good for them, and translated that into a constitutional principle, I think he loosed something very dangerous for individual rights generally.
Just catching up after being at work all day.

I did not know her at school, but would be happy to write her an email. I wouldn’t know exactly what to say, though. Know I would need to be polite, but what else. Any suggestions?

You know, seeing Gonzo’s hideous performance made me think that is why Bush appeared before the 9-11 Commision in private, no transcript, with Dickie holding his hand. I think Bush testimony in an open hearing would be just as awful.
I supppose I resent it that Lieberman is being allowed to caucus with the Dems. My party. I want Mr. Lieberman gone. ;0)
Still no reply to my email to Nancy Keenan. Not that I asked for a response, but usually advocacy groups respond. Probably just got deleted. Besides, they think we’ll just shut up and go away.

Make Lieberman caucus with the other members of the Mighty Party of Lieber-Men.
My guess is that Gonzo will decide to leave in within three months- after things have died down a bit so that Bush can’t be accused of knuckling under to pressure.

Honestly, I don’t care whether Gonzo goes or stays. We thought we were getting a good deal when Ashcroft left. All they’ll do is replace him with someone worse.

Selise,
Thought of you when I noticed the hearing on extraordinary renditions will replay tonight on cspan. It’s a long hearing and all very good but the last hour (ish) is do not miss.
The problem with Gonzo resigning is the same problem with Scooter Libby being convicted. Once that’s done, then what? The underlying problem is still there. We still don’t have any accountabililty for the Valerie Plame leak. We still have political manipulation of US Attorneys.
It’s a hollow victory, and then the Repubs will say, “You got your pound of flesh – isn’t that enough?” The real culprits, meanwhile, continue to elude capture while the patsies fall on their swords.
I want Rover. Bring me Rover.

“Freedom of Choice Act”—still the same lame naming/framing! While the other side goes for the jugular by inventing terminology (Partial Birth Abortion) that the media and even our side embraces (most recently, Hillary in her response to the Supreme Fart’s ruling), we put out a weak name that almost trivializes the issue…yeah, choice, like buying shoes.
Why not give the damn thing a real name that reflects the importance of the issue….how about WOMENS HEALTH PROTECTION ACT?? Something which has some meat to it, that may make Americans THINK, for once, about the issues involved instead of being swayed by misleading hype by the creeps??
