Today at high noon Jane declared war... on behalf of every progressive in America. And the enemy: NARAL.
And what did they do with all that cash? They sat on it and didn't do a damn thing, didn't lift a finger to fight Samuel Alito. Worse yet, when the Gang of 14 decided to vote in favor of cloture, they said that they did not consider cloture votes "significant" and would not be considering them in their scorecard. They then went on to add insult to injury by asking their membership to thank Lincoln Chafee and Joe Lieberman for the beatings they delivered with their "aye" cloture vote by pretending that their "nay" floor votes were significant. They then poured salt into the wound by endorsing both "short ride" Lieberman and Chafee over their opponents who made it clear that they would not have voted for cloture for Alito, which gave us the 5-4 decision we have today.Don't reward failure. Tell your friends. Don't give money to NARAL when they come knocking on your door to tell you that choice is going down the crapper unless you give them a lot of money, because what you'll be giving money for is Nancy Keenan's ability to point her little pinky over tea at Washington cocktail parties and tut-tut over the state of choice in this country at the hands of the fundamentalists. She'll take no responsibility for the fact that NARAL will not fight, will not back those that fight, and worse yet, that NARAL sucks up all the pro-choice money so nobody else can mount a meaningful fight, either.
While Jane was contemplating NARAL's response to the Supreme Court travesty-- a travesty that could easily should be laid at NARAL's feet-- I was on the phone with Congressman John Hall, preparing for Saturday's live blog session. He had just come out of the first meeting of the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming and he was brimming over with enthusiasm and excitement. He talked for 10 minutes about the committee before I could get in a word. (Come back Saturday at 2pm EST for the global warming stuff.) I asked him what he thought of today's Supreme Court decision upholding the ban on partial birth abortion. He had just walked out of the committee room when he called me so he didn't know it had happened and he said he had to read the ruling but... and he was off on a tear: "That phrase is a complete misnomer deliberately attached to this procedure to make it seem more unpalatable and more abhorrent. I don't know any woman who is excited about having an abortion at any time during her term." He had ideas about the availability of emergency contraception and about eduction, not just for women but for men as well.
John Hall just happened to be on the phone with me today when this came down. But he's the kind of informed and progressive candidate that Blue America supports. We don't support reactionaries who are a threat to women's rights or gay people's rights or who support illegitimate wars. NARAL is an insider political clique that has lost its way. There are state offices, like the one in New York, that are fine and effective organizations. The national Inside the Beltway NARAL is not one of us. It's one of them. Joe Lieberman? Lincoln Chafee ANY Republican? Republicans-- whether an extremist wingnut like Sessions or Cornyn or a supposed moderate like Collins or Chafee votes to organize the Senate in a way that can only be utter disaster for women's rights and tends to vote-- with the connivance of NARAL-- on procedural matters with the GOP.
NARAL, Chafee and Lieberman brought you Sammy Alito-- and made you pay for it-- and today Alito was the fifth vote in the religionist right's effort to chip away further at Roe v Wade. NARAL is either naive or incompetent or both. When they ask you for money-- based on today's Supreme Court ruling, no less-- tell them you're donating to the Blue America PAC instead. The first question we ask a candidate is how they stand on women's right to choice. If they waffle we tell them "good luck" and recommend they go talk to the DCCC or DSCC. And don't just tell them you are, how about $5 today for our PAC. We'll be using it to support candidates like John Hall and the ones you see listed with a grassroots campaign like the one we did for Victoria Wulsin last year in her first-- and nearly successful-- bid to unseat Mean Jean Schmidt. Think about what John Edwards said today when the decision was handed down: "I could not disagree more strongly with today's Supreme Court decision. The ban upheld by the Court is an ill-considered and sweeping prohibition that does not even take account for serious threats to the health of individual women. This hard right turn is a stark reminder of why Democrats cannot afford to lose the 2008 election. Too much is at stake -- starting with, as the Court made all too clear today, a woman's right to choose." And then think about what John McCain-- a variation on the theme of what all the wingnut candidates had to say-- "Today's Supreme Court ruling is a victory for those who cherish the sanctity of life and integrity of the judiciary. The ruling ensures that an unacceptable and unjustifiable practice will not be carried out on our innocent children. It also clearly speaks to the importance of nominating and confirming strict constructionist judges who interpret the law as it is written, and do not usurp the authority of Congress and state legislatures. As we move forward, it is critically important that our party continues to stand on the side of life."

Choice!
Choice!
Whatever it takes!
We must prevail!
Just tell her “NOPE! Not One Penny Ever!”
Charlie Brown for Congress!!
Choice for all, not just the privileged.
OT
my bold
Murtha’s statement
This is soooo true!! NOT ONE PENNY TO NARAL! NOT ONE PENNY!!
www.BlueAmerica08.com
And I second egregious… Go Charlie Brown! He’s gonna need our help.
My choice, and my body.
It’s my body, not yours, Scalito-Thomas
Handcuffs, shackles and a security camera in every exam room. How many physicians and nurses do you think will continue to practice under oppression? Today it’s this procedure - but the first woman who suffers harm and death as a result of it will be suing the provider. And let’s be clear - women will die from the lack of access to this procedure. It’s not about a culture of life - it’s entirely about control over women.
It’s already affecting sane and rational reproductive health teaching and practices. Next will be the increase in unintended pregnancies.
We already criminalize and incarcerate the mentally ill - prison is where the US provides over 50% of inpatient psychiatric care.
Is there anyone who does not see the trend and the chute this country has waxed?
Someone help me here, please. Am I wrong in thinking this is about control. Control of women’s decision-making process, control of women’s sexuality, control of women?
Wordsmith @ 13
just basic misogyny, perhaps
John Hall is great, and he can sing. I think my 2006 contribution to his campaign was one of the best 50 bucks I ever spent. In 2008 Hall will be “Still the One.”
NARAL is either naive or incompetent or both.
So, we’re ruling out actual corruption?
Because NARAL’s screw-up was so extreme and disastrous (and pig-headed in the face of repeated pleas and warnings) that “stupid” is more apt than naive or incompetent, and in my experience the people who staff national lobbying and membership organizations aren’t stupid. It’s more like they thought we were the naive and incompetent ones.
BlueAmerica gets my money this election cycle. Thanks, Howie.

No, you are not wrong.
Another case of simple answers for simple questions.
Chafee’s vote on cloture for Alito put one of the key nails in his Senate coffin here in RI.
My wife and her friends cut NARAL off after they supported Lieberman, and they had all been loyal supporters for years. They had the courtesy to send emails, and received smarmy replies.
I’m very glad that FDL is making this point emphatically. NARAL lost their way, and there’s no way that they should receive any further support.
Aeolus @ 19
Yes! And Jane is the person who helped me see that and understand it. Anyone know the word “grok?”

We’re all “Strangers in a Strange Land” these days…
This is why we fought so hard to defeat Alito.
This why we fought so hard to defeat Lieberman.
This is exactly what we saw coming and NARAL did the wink wink, nod,nod thing.
Although the folks at the national level of NARAL are now greedily rubbing their hands together seeing a huge fundraising opportunity, what they have actually just gotten is a massive headache coming their way.
Too bad for them, they just pissed off Jane Hamsher.
Supreme Court juges can be impeached, can they not? Like- for lying to Congress?
Shorter Thomas, Scalia, Alito, Roberts and Kennedy:
It’s only the life of a woman at stake.
Besides, it’s not handcuffing any doctors to make them go for a legal appeal in the middle of a medical procedure.

Is this procedure legal in Canada and/or Mexico?

I had a horrible moment of clarity during the Alito hearings. It damned near knocked me out.
Or how about a Vonnegutian karass, for example, FDL.
Too sad for even chocolate right now.
Those of us from the 60’s (yeah, just a few) have been standing up against injustice(s) for so long…and these days’ news stories are almost more than I can bear, bare, bair.
Bumper sticker on a friend’s car: Keep your laws off my body!
How about compromised?? My tinfoil hat is getting way to much use, but I put nothing past BushCo.
High noon.
Perfect timing for a showdown! Go Jane Hamsher, go FDL.
If NARAL didn’t go to the mat for us progressives, let’s not go to bat for them!
Hope to see you on our unofficial FirePup Fan map. Pls don’t forget to pick the right pin for yourself, and to add a fun “shoutout” and maybe a pic.——————————
EPU’d and OT, suggestion for the Mods: When a new thread comes up, might it be possible (in your copious free time) to implement some hyperlinked big colorful eye-catching graphic you folx could put in the announcement post, making it quite clear when this happens — so as to facilitate us Pups in discovering the new bone to chew on?
And in that same vein, perhaps add some sort of background color (faint grey?) to all posts past that point, to indicate “You are now definitely in EPU-land?” [AKA “Depuis ici, vous entrez a la sector EPU, gardez-vous!” :)] Or if it’s easier, just turn the entire topic string (faint grey?) to indicate that this string is now a “Dead Parrot?” Just a thought… anyone have any other/better ideas that’d be not too much effort to implement?

(Pls pardon yet more OT… EPU’d from even further back)

Feeling adventuresome? Interested in who else is in the FDL community, and where they are? Maybe get in touch with them via anonymous message?

As a fellow from the 60s/70s, I would have to say that one should never be too sad for chocolate. Uuuummm! C-h-o-c-o-l-a-t-e!!!
When all the shit went down with Lieberman I actually had my check to NARAL in the car ready to be mailed. After a couple of days I tore it up and have torn up all their mail to me and ignored their phone calls to me. I believe I will be taking their next call to me and boy do I have some words that they’re not going to want to hear. They call about once a month and I’m sure they will be calling in light of this recent court decision. I’m looking forward to that call.
McCain the maverick. One nightmare after another.
My discussion with a wingnut on late term abortion… During a signature drive for 2006 candidates, I was confronted by a wingnut about this procedure….. I asked him if he had time to talk about it….
He started(of course a he) with the statement that a woman should be able to make up her mind to terminate a pregnancy by 21 weeks….
A: did you know that 100% of LT procedures were done for severe birth defects or the health of the mother?
Winger: No
Asked him if he knew anything about pregnancy and when the tests are done to diagnosis medical conditions that might necessitate a LT procedure.
Winger: no not really even though he was a grandfather
First test - Alpha Fetal Protein is done at 14-16 weeks which is after the 12 week first trimester deadline. Results come back 1-2 weeks later, retesting, ultrasounds, amniocentesis and more testing, referral to specialists and genetic testing. Agonizing decisions, counseling, and evaluation for the appropriate procedure AND that pregnancy is at 21 weeks gestation or more.
Ya….. some silly woman cannot make up her mind…. I have held the hand of family members during counseling sessions and had them cry on my shoulder trying to make these so very hard decisions. The fact that Congress can legislate medical practices is beyone me.

cinnamonape,
As an Anti-War protestor I have been to Lungren’s office twice in the past two months in meetings protesting his idiocy concerning Iraq. People are working in District Three to get him out. You just don’t hear too much about us yet. :)
Anyone remember the end of the Alito hearings? I have the video and it’s uploading to YouTube now but one thing in particular caught my attention. Alito got up and without even a backwards glance at his wife, took off from the room. His wife sat there dazed and unsure what to do until other people started urging her to follow him and helped push her to the door. I asked myself then and there how bad it would be for women under this jerkoff if he would diss his own beloved wife that way.
As soon as the video clears YouTube censors, I’ll link to it.

Just sent $200.00 to Vic Wulsin, Brown, and McNerny through Blue America. Vic Wulsin has to be the best candidate ever running against the repugnant witch of Hamilton County.
If Howie still has my number from my 5K contribution last cycle to run ads in Hastert’s district, he can always give me a call. I’m on the Obama bandwagon now, but if Howie has an idea where early money might make a difference, we have room in our budget that used to go to KCRW, NARAL, and Emily’s List that needs to be spent.
Hey Jane –
For what it’s worth — I’ve read that Jane Fonda is THE BIGGEST DONOR for Women’s Reproductive Rights; which means, she is probably donor # 1 in NARAL’s roledex.
Since Joe and Valerie Wilson are now her neighbors in Santa Fe, maybe they could suggest she check out FDL — or maybe friends of yours in Hollywood could help Jane Fonda see the light.
When the big donors get the message, maybe NARAL will remember why they exist.
It is important to withhold money from groups like NARAL and Planned Parenthood. This is a great day for the pro-life movement. We have Senator Sam Brownback to thank for rejecting the Miers nomination and getting Justice Alito on the court.
Nate @ 37
good catch, Nate. I’ll be checking youtube shortly.
Well! I’m not too up to speed on the ins/outs of partial birth/late term abortions, and so forth. Frankly, I think the progressive movement has done a pretty poor job of explaining all this to regular Joes such as I. But, that may be another talk for another time.
So….is the NARAL outfit tax-free? A non-profit? Here’s what I’m getting to: can lists of donors to NARAL be obtained? How about lists of corporate sponsors? I’m thinking that bitching at NARAL may fall on deaf ears. But if you cut into their money stream (a la Imus protest) then maybe you get NARAL to sit up and take notice. Just a few thoughts.

My thoughts while watching Alito go through the hearings…. His facial expressions said…Immature, spoiled, arrogant, smug…with a little kids look like he knew the fix was in…so just play along cause daddy took care of everything..
He would get even real soon..
NARAL and the members of the gang of fourteen made that possible..
So John Negroponte has gone to Libya for high level meetings.
Can’t wait for Suzanne Malveaux to talk aobut a ‘big wet kiss’ for the Pan Am/Lockerbie bomber.
Can’t wait for Fox News, CNN and the Republican congressional tools to scream about “bloodthirsty dictators” and “tyrants”.
At least Ghaddaffy didn’t want blood on his hands.
He snubbed Negroponte.

I always thought that being a Supreme Court Justice had to be very satisfying. Variety of cases, top notch arguments, final word, lots of help, defined work hours, elegant surroundings…you know.
Now I find that for Kennedy, Roberts, Alito, Scalia and Thomas being Justices is not enough. They want to be doctors and have begun practicing medicine by setting standards for operative procedures on patients they’ve never seen.
Aside from the fact that the honored Justices must have attended Bill Frist Medical College, which is, unfortunately, not yet accredited, there is the little problem of having enough Justices to provided timely medical advice about which “safe option” to use when the patient actually is one of those
Time can be limited in medicine which is why doctors carry pagers and work nights, weekends and holidays.
Personally I’m amazed that Justices K, R, S, A, and T want to add the stresses of obstetric practice to their Court duties. Doctor envy must be far stronger than I thought.
Who knew?
NARAL lost me when it attacked Nader in 2000. Whoa! Back off a sec! Like the big difference would be anything more than a matter of degree if the winner (and of course he WAS the winner) had been THAT Al Gore? The Clinton vassal who allowed his entrenched Dem handlers to do him up in Reagan makeup and costume and do an impression on a high-profile national TV debate during the campaign? I love Jane, but let’s try to straighten out this firing squad line, for once.

I just submitted a Google keyword ad pointing to this article. Every time a search for NARAL occurs, a link to this blog post appears at the top of Google. Don’t click the ad, as it costs me $0.05 each time someone clicks.
Hopefully this will send them a message. I will run this for a couple weeks until my budget runs out, but perhaps others can submit ads as well.
Emily’s List is suppoed to be a Women candidates pac with emphasis on pro choice issues. To me it seems it just women candidates and choice is not the consideration.

Great idea! Let’s not forget the cover NARAL gave to Barbara Boxer when she campaigned in the Connecticut primary for RGJoe, saying “He’s been endorsed by the national pro-choice single-issue-group!” NARAL allowed Boxer to ignore RGJoe’s “short ride” comment and hide behind their endorsement skirts, never addressing the major issue of his cloture vote.
Inside-the-Beltway baseball, all of it.

Thanks Howie and Valley Girl. Contact info sent. I’m eternally gratetful that technology has allowed us to connect. Not too long ago I was a nominal Republican, going batshit crazy because nobody was making any sense. I heard a clip from Howard Dean somewhere, and followed links to places that felt like home.
You’re a good man, Charlie Brown!
So we’ve lost the Supreme Court. Congress is virtually impotent apparently for Bush’s signing statements and refusals to sign.
Imagine if Congress sent a bill to the WH that the war will go on forever and designate the entire GNP, cutting every government function (except taxing the poor and middle class)- which I imagine Bush would sign, however insane…The point is that we’re all powerless right now.
We no longer have a democratic representative form of government. There is more to the neocon plan than we’re able to see, I suspect.
Just one example: What is it about gun control that they have up their sleeves for some point in the future?
I’m with you all. FDL has done so much toward objective, smart, and responsible analysis.
Thanks.

Well, even a stopped clock is correct twice a day.
The national leadership of NARAL appears to be getting like the HRC, in the gay rights arena. Still on the right page part of the time, but lost steam, lost vision, wedded to mainstream money, and starting to be a funding roadblock in the way of leaner and more progressive organizations.
Dear Howie and community and everyone,
Today I received an unsolicited envelope from NARAL.
I would like to know who sold my info to them. Especially on this day, when I received their envelope, and they thought cloture was no big deal. Here is my deal. I’m not repeating my mistakes.
MISTAKES
I contributed to many Act Blue Candidates (I enjoyed this success). Somebody sold my info.
*******
[MODERATOR NOTE: NOT POSSIBLE. ACTBLUE INFO IS TOTALLY CONFIDENTIAL.]
*******
NON MISTAKES
Helped the rubber stamp project (I enjoyed this success, especially the videos from our elected representatives with one they made for us), Marcy’s book, and the funding of the Crashing the Gates project with my calls to Sherrod Brown and Tim Ryan.
Given Chris Bowers analysis. I’ve decided, I am better off sending $25 to Chris, FireDogLake, Digby, Kos, TPM, Booman, Glen, BLUEPAC, …,
And in the event we get candidates like Lamont, Tester, Webb, …, I might reconsider.
Sestak - no more. Doesn’t want to hear from us. He doesn’t mind sending me mail.
But to get an unmarked solicitation on petitions today, I say “Tough Shit. Where the hell where you! Now! That! Alito rules!”
Clarification,
I believe some candidate passed along my contact information. It’s the funding problem all over and over and over again.
How long is it going to take before the realization sets in that unless this administration is stopped dead in its track, the next two years are going to be remembered as the the two years that signified the end of the USA!. Thes pieces of garbage must be removed from office or stopped completely from achieving any more of their goals. Impeachment is only one step available. Every single tactic should be used. Shut down the gov if necessary, Use the same tactics that they have been using. Stall stall stall.
and at the same time, get the word out there in every way possible. Sure, they will see what is up and they will strike back but remember, we control congress. We may not have enough of a majority yet but who the hel;l cares. Publish every single action of the goopers that reflects their compulsion to destroy the USA. Just keep doing it and we can defeat them so soundly in 08 that it will take 50 years to regroup.
Send them a little comment at their website. they need to know how pissed people can get. But we can use this to show those “independants” just what they are getting from the repugnacans.
When NARAL called last week after not hearing from them since the Lieberman fiasco, it was with huge pleasure that i told them to take us off their list.
“Why?” the guy who called asked innocently.
Because NARAL supported Joe Lieberman - end of story.
“Oh, really?” he asked, “for that?”
Yeah, for that endorsement you are never to call here again.
We thought we were the only people who told NARAL to f-off, so it’s encouraging to see FDL take up the banner to stop NARAL.
Thanks
Why doesn’t someone start a NARAL scorecard?
