Considering the fact that OxyLimbaugh's fondest desire has always been to be a football commentator:
In the wake of his controversial statements regarding Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb, Rush Limbaugh has resigned from his position on ESPN's Sunday NFL Countdown pregame show.
ESPN has accepted the resignation.
This has to hurt :
Keith Olbermann is returning to sports broadcasting for the first time in six years as the co-host of the pre-game show for NBC's Sunday night NFL telecasts, NBC announced today.Olbermann, who will continue to host his nightly news show “Countdown with Keith Olbermann” on MSNBC TV, will round out the “Football Night in America” team of host Bob Costas, co-host Cris Collinsworth, and analysts Jerome Bettis and Tiki Barber.
Some times the better man does win.

As long as he refrains from Howard Cosell imitations, I can deal. When is KO going to sleep?
Go Keith! Show that oxy-chomping bastard how it’s done…
That’s friggin’ PERFECT! I love KO and detest Limpballs! Karma rules!
There’s a special place in Hell waiting for Limbaugh. It can’t come too soon.
I guess old Rush will just have to settle on those little V*agra jaunts to the Carribean with his Hollywood boyfriends.
Edited by Mod *
You can bet the fundies will be throwing everything negative Keith has ever said about anyone up against the wall to see what will stick. There will be a massive effort to make sure Keith cannot comment on football if Rush cannot. They will not let this travesty of a mockery of a sham to stand.
I hope he sits alone at home and cries about this. . .
Rush almost looks ready to cry in that photo.
I’m not a football fan, but have become a KO fan, so good for him.
May Limpballs be tee’d off….
Go Keith..

JANE!!!!! KEITH!!!!! {{{{{HUGS ACROSS THE BOARD}}}}}
I’m surprised, the NFL is a pretty conservative outfit.
Congratulations to Keith Olbermann!!! As for Rush, too bad, so sad.
OT: But, a diary at Kos regarding email retrieval found a link at the bottom of a page of the doc dump that reveals that the document which was written in 2003, was retrieved recently using Enterprisevault. So, I checked out what Enterprisevault is via Robtex.com. This is what I found. I don’t know if it is of any value in the hunt for the 5,000,000 missing emails or not:

IIRC, Keith started his career on ESPN. He’s a frequent guest with Dan Patrick on Dan’s radio show. Keith has legit sports credentials.
Something is weird here…

They may try, but most sports fans already KNOW that Keith has a strong snark streak AND that he is a credible sportscaster, unlike Rust Limpballs
Just a thought…

Oh, good grief, now I’ll have to start watching Sunday football again.
Justice comes in many flavors…
I remember when KO was “elevated” to do the news and no one thought a sportscaster had the whatever that it takes . . .
I think the list of right-wing radio blowhards who haven’t made racist comments would be a lot shorter than the list of those who haven’t.
I just keep hoping that with each chip, chip away, each time an Imus is sacked, a Limbaugh is caught with someone else’s erection drugs, a Michael Savage (?) is heard siding with the jihadis coz at least they hate them some fagit,…. the rest of the media will wake up to the poison on the airwaves masquerading as broadcasting.
Guess the tune to which this is sung (hint: Eddie Albert is involved):
Ruuuuush Limbaugh is a bitter man,
Heeeeeeeee’s lost a gig to Olbermann!
Keith’s words will be spread far and wide

Keith Olbermann is here!
Great for Keith. They’ve often asked him to participate in coverage like the Olympics, and he’s said he is often torn with the notion of taking a break from Countdown to cover sports. This way, he can do both of his passions. Great!
Even better to know that he’ll likely succeed over the NFL’s failed attempts at humor via Rush and Dennis Miller. Hehehe!
OT regarding the Pullitzers: I wanted to post a link to a recent editorial cartoon by Mike Thompson of the Detroit Free Press. Thompson was nominated for the Pullitzer in this category. Here’s one terrific example of his work that I’m sure you’ll all enjoy: Tap, tap, tap!
I just love the care he takes in illustrating details on the faces of people like Bush & Cheney.

You funny GdP – wonderful to smile on an otherwise grim day. ;~)
Rush probably made that comment in the first place because the quarterback wouldn’t sleep with him.
With all the gay closeted conservatives, isn’t anyone suspicious that Limp-balls has been married three times, but doesn’t have a kid. (Actually – THANK GOD! That would be a good case for an abortion for the sake of humanity.)
I hope Tiki Barber is a Democrat, he’s pretty cool.

I get to look at Sweet TIki Barber AND Olbermann.

And unlike the oxyconman in his brief stint, Keith has the integrity to keep ideology and self-promotion out of it. Keith has more sports knowledge in his little toe, than Flushed Limpflaw has in his whole bloated corpse.

And for that matter, Jerome Bettis is kind of cute, too, if you like your guys big (which I used to–definitely went through the lunkhead stage before settling on my ultimate player husband…) In fact, compared to Tiki and Jerome, I’d say KO will only have the third sexiest smile on the show.

Said the only reason Donovan McNabb was a celebrated QB was because he was black. Or words to that effect. Which a whole lot of people in Philadelphia, PA and Syracuse, NY would dispute.
As long as we’re doing high fives . . .
In case you all didn’t see it in the last thread, Charlie Savage, champion of truth and justice just won a Pulitzer for his piece on signing statement. I heard he is finishing a book. KO would be very wise to leave politics out of his football show. Frankly, I’d be shocked if NBC let him wade into that. I don’t see how trapsing into political discussion in a NFL show would help their ratings whatsoever.
I heard about “Countdown with Keith Olbermann” from your site and I want to say thanks its a great show…

Pat_AlexVA @ 59
Exactly, and therefore I expect he will keep the political talk out of the sports show. You can add sports to the political show, but the reverse can really alienate a portion of your audience. We’ve been trained over the past six years to view politics in a “us versus them” mentality. I would think that Keith is wise enough to not make comments that could potentially piss off a significant percentage of viewers. He can keep up with the sportscasters without delving into politics. I don’t think we should predict that this sports show will have any liberal vibe whatsoever.

But, it brings to mind a question of sport. My wife is trying to convince me that I have an anachronistic fantasy about playing hot-box for hours or shooting hoops until it was too dark to see, as soon as the snow was off the field or courts.
My kids, on the other hand, would prefer to stay inside and play a computer game regardless of the weather. I’ve outlawed xbox and ps2 and gamecube, but the computers are really just as bad. Don’t kids want to be outside anymore?

I mean, lets face it. Baseball is a game, a thing of beauty when it’s played right, at least before the pumped up bodies and the bloated salaries and lack of team loyalty. American football, on the other hand, is not a game; it is a proxy for war, a spectacle little different from Christians and lions, bringing out the same emotions and violence; watching it undermines democracy.

This press conference is painful. Journalists are asking for details and asking accusatory questions of the university’s President. He’d be wise to stop taking questions from people like Katie Couric (I just heard her questioning why they didn’t close down the university right away – she did not, however, start her question with “Some say you should have…”)
The fact is that there will be another time to do a review over how their procedures worked and what can be improved. They don’t even know who the shooter is, if there was more than one shooter, and who has died. It is not time to grill the university police on how they operated. Not now, when the facts of the incident are not known.

Shootings at VT
There were two shooting sprees about two hours apart and at two separate parts of the campus. Apparently one of the biggest things that is going to have to be explained is why the campus was not locked down after the first shootings, and by extension, why the shooter was not apprehended before the second spree.

That combined with all the brain injuries and head trauma that football players experience, it is making NFL doctors about as credible as the tobacco company doctors or energy company scientists.

O thank you
Keith’s interview with Buck O’Neill was a
classic…
Buck O’Neill bears no grudges and has no regrets. There’s no room for such things in his heart. His heart is full up with gratitude and his head with good memories and wisdom.
“I can honestly say I love everbody and I hate
no one.” Buck

Hear! Hear!
Ah, baseball… heading out of town with beer and pickled eggs to listen to the season opener on the car radio.
61 in 61…cheering on our hometown hero. His baseball memeorabilia are in a Fargo shopping center museum. His Roger Maris Drive welcomes travelers and citizens to our beautiful Lindenwood Park. And Roger Maris Cancer Center shelters when people need help most. This is the true home run record.
20 years ago–the 1987 Twins. World Champs. Kirby, Herbie, Gags, Gladden…those were the days.
10 years ago today–the Red River of the North flooding Grand Forks and Fargo and Ada Minn and farm after farm, community after community in ND and Minnesota. The iconic photo was the newspaper building in flames amid the floodwater. The president and vice president and FEMA were competent, swift to respond, and THERE. Those were the days….
And today? Major violence rocks the country again. Some days it seems to me that this is America’s Darkest Age… and only the promise of sunshine breaking through gives hope for restoration of democracy and United States of America again.

As for red staters, don’t forget “NASCAR”!!!!
(from a red stater)
Bay State Librul @ 174
Yep.
RevDeb @ 171
That was a good reason to do it, I think. An even better reason would be the fact that the DOJ just failed to comply with a subpoena for relevant documents.
Good for Leahy—right thing to do.
jinny @ 172
Thousands across the land are scrambling to switch sick days..
[Not trying to diminish the seriousness of the tragedy.]
Bay State Librul @ 163
Haven’t TOTALLY made the switch. I still cheer for the Reds first and foremost. But have “hated” the Yankees since they beat the Reds in ‘61 and remember the Louisvill Colonels as a RS farm team, so adding the RS for AL purposes made sense. Lived in So. NH, Waltham, and CT over the years so plenty of RS influence. Even got Channel 38 on cable when I lived in Rome, NY.
Frank Probst @ 179
Are we surprised?
Not.
Given the tragic shooting, this would be a good day for the white house to dump some really awful news, knowing it will get lost in the news about the horrific shooting. Just something you mite see.
Frank Probst @

Poor Gonzo, two more days to worry, worry, worry. Also two more days to let the Richard Viguerie, John Whitehead, Bruce Fein and Bob Barr letter to stew among conservatives.

NOOOOOO!!!
Got a trial on Thursday – and I’ve been nurturing my “cold” for tomorrow for a couple of weeks now.
ok – it’s the proper move – I wonder how many hours my DVR will hold….

Cricket’s the real sport — baseball’s too slow, there’s no strategy, no finesse, no drama, the managers call the shots, the grounds are boring, the fielders all wear gloves, and the ball’s just not hard enough. That being said, GO AUSSIES!
God bless America.
God bless the families in Va.
God bless baseball and Firedoglake.
Today we weep for our country.
Tomorrow, we will start anew.

Nice! I’ve got three on my cap. Would’ve had more if it weren’t for the night job!
It is the right thing to do, and after 6 years of incompetence, a couple days wait for the hearing won’t kill us.
Death toll at VT is now at 33. God help those poor families through this.

A real ritual, those extra-inning night games @ the ‘Stick, then to the Buena Vista for Irish Coffee…

A little geographically challenged? Virginia Tech ISN’T in Roanoke, though the Star City of the South probably has more media than Blacksburg.
GSD @ 185
Oh my, you almost feel for the guy.
Imagine if he decided to just tell the truth and then take the consequences.
I hope he starts considering this possibility for himself. His salvation, don’t you think? What’s BushCo gonna do? Terminate him — for real?

Abu roast moved to Thursday
jinny @ 175: I don’t see a link on cnn.com about this delay. Can you provide a direct link to the story? I assume they’re still updating it – have they announced when the testimony will be held, or is it TBA?
(I’m watching CNN and didn’t hear them mention a revised the testimony date, either)
Bay State Librul @ 175
Amen!
(And it’s O’Neil – one “l”)
scarecrow @ 189
Aye, lovely words.
My father tells about studying for his doctorate on the University of Texas campus when Charles Whitman was shooting people from the tower next door to the chemistry building. He says it was like a dream and he hasn’t ever thought about it without bringing in a sense of the utter surreal. Whitman was found, later, to have a large brain tumor.
I don’t know what the circumstances surrounding the horrific events as VT will be; but I hope the killer had some equally terribly brain affliction. It is just too awful to contemplate that a human would want to kill so indiscriminately without being broken — very severely broken at that.

the end for me was watching jeff fuller suffer a permanent neck injury.
haven’t gone to a game since. usually don’t even watch the superbowl on tv. just find no enjoyment in it…

There is a bumper sticker I see around here it reads : Lacrosse, Long Island’s sport
which is funny since I thought it was native american
too many fuckin guns.
Once my mother (a dittohead of the first order) asked me what my life’s wish would be and I shocked the hell out of her by saying that I wished all weapons would be rendered back to their base metals immediately.
Former GOP congressman and presidential candidate, Pete McCloskey has announced he’s leaving the GOP.
Please keep Rove around until 08. He’s the best recruiter we’ve had in a long time.

From what the media is reporting now, it seems they knew a shooter was loose and looking for someone before 8:00 AM. Why wasn’t the campus on total lockdown at that time?
nevermind my 201. I found the info on the Judiciary Committee site. Gonzo is up at 10:00am ET on Thursday.

oh my god, yes!
i can remember going to bed tipsy, and then waking up a couple of hours later from the caffeine buzz.
you are making really miss CA.

Goes without saying. And hell, for a real man (as in, my real man), I’ll take a guy who’s willing to play ulimate in a skirt (though he has not, except wihen playing with his former Japanese team, gone to the same lengths of, um, exposure as some do). On a field with girls no less.
But I’m talking sports you can watch regularly on TV. Rugby (and ultimate) is for live matches.
off topic and will re post since this one is about to get updated
I had an epiphany and must share…I am positive I am right
man, I have abu torture down cold…remember when he testified “no American is under surveillance with this nsa program”?
I told everyone then that what he was saying was that there were other programs…he admitted it with that statement…I had an epiphany back then which turned out to be correct
I had another one right now
abu torture;
since according to this fascist the usa’s work “at the pleasure of the president” THERE IS NO IMPROPER REASON.
that’s right, according to their claims, all reasons are proper
there, done, that’s what he’s doing and that’s how he thinks he can claim he didn’t lie to congress
looseheadprop @ 206
I concur, the Ojibwe nation in my area of the country played a version. But I’m afraid that sport will for ever be associated with the events surrounding the Duke rape case. Which is probably too bad, it seems like a fine sport. But, I suspect it is quite a bit like soccer…much more interesting to play than it is to watch.
scarecrow @ 189
Way late to this thread. And now you’ve made me cry. My problem. Not yours.
emptywheel @ 218
We watch rugby on TV at my house, regularly
looseheadprop @ 206
well, long island was native american once.
Just love that Fitz
“Is your investigation over now? Fitzgerald says that he does not expect to file any further charges. If information comes to light or if new information comes forward that warrants further investigation, we will do that. The case is now inactive. We are going back to our day jobs.”
Back to Cooper/Rove.
“At one point, the aides were asked why Mr. Cooper’s call to Mr. Rove was not entered in Mr. Rove’s office telephone logs. There was no record of the call, the person who has been briefed said, because Mr. Cooper did not call Mr. Rove directly, but was transferred to his office from a White House switchboard. The aides have worked closely with Mr. Rove, screening his calls and coordinating his activities with other White House officials. Mr. Hernandez had been an aide to President Bush since his successful campaign for governor of Texas in 1994, and Ms. Ralston is known as one of Mr. Rove’s most trusted associates.”

Bitter Man @ 224 is right. *slap self* Okay. So. Keith Olbermann doing commentary, eh?
Shades of ‘Jimmy the Greek’ http://sportsillustrated.cnn.c…..ideo/1988/
Not quite sure what Limbaugh looks like in that picture. A raisan, a rat or a Koala bear!
I vote raisan!
It’s troubling that individuals like Rush, Rumsfeld, Cheney, Newtie, Kissinger, Nixon and a host of others don’t go away after awhile. They just keep coming back. And when they finally do pass from the scene there always seem to be plenty to take their place. Damn the GOP.
hey Jane!
hope you’re doin’ well.
What is it with these R’s the pres wanted to baseball commisioner more than president and now Rush wanted to be a foosball commentator?
Maybe they never grew up? Will they always be as the boys from the movie: Build it and they will come (?)
No sports here, unless the Spurs are doing well.
Me likem basketball players. And I have very wild sexual fantasies about Manu Ginobli, which I won’t bore (or excite) anyone with.
Growing up in Texas, even I succumbed to the Holy Pigskin for a good portion of my life. I knew football as well as most guys…and always knew more about it than any of the husbands I’ve had.
Scary.
But I got over worrying about football. My mom is just as fanatical as ever. Sometimes for fun, I send her sympathy cards when the Cowboys lose because she takes it so hard.
Ultimate and Rugby are so much the same ( except contact ) long games, endorphins, and great post game parties. Nobody knows much about either and they have huge player following See Ulitmate Players Assoc. for fun.
Let us not forget, Daryn Kagan – CNN news and sportsgal. The great EL Rushbo apparently killed her career also. Must be difficlt to get rid of the El Rushbo stench.
Well I’m late again, but need to comment anyway. The problem with Rush is he’s not good at anything. If he was, he wouldn’t serve as ringmaster for a bunch of crooked politicians and lame brain losers. Keith on the other hand is the kind of guy who is smart, and good at so many things it is probably a challenge for him to accomodate all of the opportunities coming his way. Besides, he’s actually funny, and knows how to be charming. Added to those attributes are actual deductive reasoning abilites. Poor Rush, he really is only good at shoveling shit.
hungryjoe @

We will not take Limpballs as one of us. I repeat, do not even play that he is a fag.
Yes, also O’Reilly’s not going to enjoy watching football as much as he used to…
Good for Keith!! LOL, Rush Limpo will just have to live with being full time hate monger.
Jane, are we talking about OxyLimpball?
