Johnny and June Carter Cash "Jackson" |
I'm not sure if this has been proven yet or not…but I came across this the other day.
In a nutshell, MSN hosts an "Artist Of The Month" poll and this month some savvy Nine Inch Nails fans thought there might be something fishy going on. How, they wondered, could it possibly be that their beloved NIN would be losing an internet popularity poll to a relatively "unknown" band called The Bravery? NIN's fans pride themselves on their ability to mobilize swiftly online. I think the poll is rather silly, the other artists that you can vote for are Avril Lavigne and Patti Smith. But I don't like the idea of a record label stinking up an internet poll that fans are really trying to win. Stuff like this is really important to fans.
I originally thought, yeah who are The Bravery anyway??? Never heard of ‘em. What a scam. Another example of election stealing. Of course Nine Inch Nails would have more votes. They have way more blogs, chat rooms, ‘registered' fans (whatever that means) and albums. But then I dug in deeper and did my own investigating (went to I-Tunes) and low and behold The Bravery are now on their second record. I click on the first three songs and they sounded vaguely familiar. I'd heard them somewhere before on a TV commercial or the radio. Hence the hole in the "fabulous fraud exposé" that I was going to bring you all this week. The Bravery are pretty big, with well over a million profile views on their MySpace page, lots of videos up on YouTube, etc… but bigger than Nine Inch Nails???
So if Geffen Records did rig this poll, which is still a strong possibility, shame on them. But whatever the outcome, good for Nine Inch Nails fans for questioning what they thought was jive and going after it. Then again, this whole thing might also mean that we're all getting a little older and just haven't heard of The Bravery yet. Until now.
On a sad note, the former home of Johnny Cash and June Carter burnt to the ground this week; that beautiful house on the lake where so much great music was created.

Someone explain me the meaning of ‘Zed’
RIP, Kurt!
I saw Charlie Louvin the other night – you should definitely go see him in LA – I guess he’s doing an in-store at Amoeba on Sunday. That night I think he’s playing in San Diego. Among the Louvin Bros. songs he did was “Great Atomic Power.”
Thanks for the Cash. I confess I’m relieved not to be watching Lee Hazelwood.

Zed’s dead baby.
Donita, it could be slow on the thread today, as the Dept of Justice document dump has folks really hyped.
What DoJ doc dump? I just woke up a little while ago after a late night.
There will be no more breakfast of champions, for the brave or otherwise. One of history’s greatest literary voices has been silenced.

Slow’s my middle name baby. Thanks for the heads up Peterr.

DOJ and the White House turned over another big batch of emails and documents to the House Judiciary committee. They’re posting them as pdfs on their website, and folks here, at TPM, and elsewhere are digging through them, looking for the goods on Team Rover.
Check out the last couple of threads . . . they’ve been smoking.

Congratulations deGastignan!
Zed, before fdl re-invention, meant Z which is the first letter of Zero.
Somebody got excited one day and announced they got the Zed and the rest is history.
If anyone wants to cast a vote for Avril, here’s a link to the poll.

Great work, those of you combing through all of it!
Ha, I just casted a vote for Patti Smith and the current standings are hilarious. NIN fans have taken the lead with 96%. Here’s another link about their “bot war” with Geffen.
http://idolator.com/tunes/nine…..bloody-web bot-battleground-250696.php
On this band The Bravery, as I told Donita when putting this together this week, I am firmly in the skeptical camp on this poll controversy. In this day and age where you can astroturf fake popularity via MySpace page view counts, rigged polls and other methods, it is very easy for a large label to boost it’s artists supposed popularity by having a street team of the band’s fans repeatedly voting for their band using multiple profiles to register multiple votes from one fan.
I’ve heard a couple of their songs in commercials too, but I’ve not heard them on broadcast or satellite radio much and despite being an obsessive music fan who spends inordinate amounts of time on music websites and keeping an eye on the biz for a living I simply did not know who these folks were until recently. Maybe I am getting old and less “hip”, but this whole thing smells like a propaganda campaign from Geffen.
I’m amazed Patti is still alive.

Lyrics for Song: House On The Lake
Lyrics for Album: Black Cadillac
Well, I miss the sounds of Tennessee
And the smell of heavy rain
The roses in the garden
Laugh before the pain
But I hear his voice close in my ear
I see her smile and wave
I blink and while my eyes are closed
They both have gone away
Blue bare room, the wood and nails
There’s nothing left to take
But love and years are not for sale
In our old house on the lake
Well, I’m goin’ down to New Orleans
‘Cause we both are sinkin’ fast
And I’ll stare into the Bourbon moon
We’ll see how long we last
But I hear his voice
I follow down the velvet undertow
Back to the place where I was born
Back to my southern home
Blue bare room, the wood and nails
There’s nothing left to take
But love and years are not for sale
In our old house on the lake
In our old house on the lake
In our old house

OK, I’ll fess up. I may have started the Zed thing in a burst of Lamont enthusiasm…
The only time I’ve sung publicly was as a backup singer to fill in when a musician boyfriend was in a terrible, terrible bind.
And there was that occasion when I did a karaoke for “Stray Cat Strut” that brought down the house apparently. Too bad I was too bombed to remember any of it!
I could have sworn I just finished reading a fantastic post by Marcy speculating about Fitz and the RNC emails. Then it vanished. Was I dreaming?
Slightly OT but related by several tangents. Plus its the funniest thing I’ve seen in a long time…

My grandfather’s house was burned down by a forest fire Johnny Cash started. When he was drunk! Payback sucks.

You rang?
T- For the record I think Zed is cute.
It definitely doesn’t make me angry. People stealing from a children’s hospital for their offshore accounts, or ruining a perfectly good 200 year old democracy, don’t get me started.
Wonder what “gold bars” is doing trying to get out in front of this Rove/RNC e-mail discrepancy? Seems like he’s drawing a little more attention to that potential scandal than bushco normally likes…muss be sumpthin’ to see here.
Umm, I think Fitz had better hang onto those frequent guest points at his DC place. The job just keeps growing…
bilge @ 54
That is wrong.
So wrong.
On so many levels.
Zed, is, among other things, how the letter “Z” is supposed to be pronounced…….
But a god called Page named a band with an alliterative connection.
I was there in the Albert Hall when he, Clapton and Beck jointly played the solos of Stairway to Heaven and Layla — Layla did not come off so well, ‘cos no slide, but S to Hvn was just that!
hi donita! nice post…
johnny cash home nine inch nails = great video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AO9dbmJ_2zU
As a lead vocalist, it is easier for me to play rhythm guitar than lead. I personally know a bass player or two that can sing while playing intricate bass lines. To me, that’s as difficult as rubbing your tummy and patting yourself on the head simultaneously.
Sting can do it. Geddy Lee, the former Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy, Paul McCartney, are all good bass players that can sing and play at the same time.
OMG. I’m in the Docudump thing, and one of the signatories to a letter complaining about Lam is… You guessed it. Duke Cunningham. Unreal.
We are also seeing why there was an nice attempt to muddy the waters about bloggers too….

And Doolittle, too! Hm. Methinks I smell a setup here.
LJ/Aquaria @ 67
Who could have anticipated . . .
Is Luskin saying in this interview that Fitz had Rove’s laptops and blackberries back in late 2004?
http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITI…..index.html
“The prosecutor probing the Valerie Plame spy case saw and copied all of Rove’s e-mails from his various accounts after searching Rove’s laptop, his home computer, and the handheld computer devices he used for both the White House and Republican National Committee, Luskin said.”
—
If so, the chances that the 2005/2006 USAtty firings e-mails are out there is virtually certain – either that, or Rove plans to hang the sloppy law enforcement work on Fitz?
If Fitz had a listing of all those RNC domains and accounts back in ‘04, then he would have put them under surveillance, right?
As I understand it, the house burnt itself down on learning that its new owner was Barry Gibb of the BeeGees. Seriously!
Ok, grege. Wish I could do more to help you guys and gals save the children and our democracy.
Glad to know we’re not causing you undue stress with the zed malapropism.
Punaise and I can duke it out for official credit. I might need it to enhance my CV, so I’m not giving up easy!
And after reading my 11:51 I think I’ll let the professionals handle the puns from now on.

Rove, et al should have used smoke signals – not the internet tubes.
Relevant to the Marcy’s post that I assume will resurface shortly:
“The prosecutor, Patrick Fitzgerald, subpoenaed the e-mails from the White House, the RNC and Bush’s re-election campaign, [Luskin] added.” — AP
T- @ 56
well, I certainly wouldn’t want to steal your thunder on that – I may be misremembering, after all…
When you get this thing about ‘The Bravery’ worked out, please look into the world famous superspendicular Pussy Cat Dolls.
(doubting myself at every step, now that “zed” has been revealed to *not* be the Canadian name for the alphabet character ‘Z’.)

I sometimes get lost singing and playing rhythm. Not that great at either, mind you.
I’ve heard conflicting schools of thought: 1) you must disconnect your head from your hands, and 2) you must sing the melody to what you’re playing.

I like the “movie-like” part the best. It’s so lame.
Feinstein has a letter to Abu about Lam, asking about “border patrol” concerns regarding the drop in immigration cases prosecuted (doc#27/28 of sec 7. 6/15/2006). And now these BMs are talking about using DF’s letter, and some EOUSA stats, to “make the case” against Lam as per an email from March 5 of this year. (doc #35 in section 7). The emails do NOT have full header/mailing data, so we don’t know who’s getting mail where. It originates with an eop.gov account.
I haven’t seen this border patrol complaint. Anyone finding that yet?

According to Ward Churchill, General Custer had designs on running for president. His fatal mistake (He’d split up his troops) in the hasty attack at LBH was caused by his desire to brand himself as a fierce Indian killer. It was popular at that time for politicians to associate themselves with the slaughter of Native Americans. The voters apparently ate it up.
