Oh the irony. From Jim Lobe:
[W]orried that her quest might actually gain momentum, administration hawks -- in this case, led by Deputy National Security Adviser Elliott Abrams and Vice President Dick Cheney -- accuse the speaker of undermining the president and, working through obliging editorial writers at the Washington Post, among other sympathetic media, including, of course, the Wall Street Journal, attack her for "substitut(ing) her own foreign policy for that of a sitting Republican president."
That would be the same Elliot Abrams who was indicted for (and pled guilty to) lying to Congress (no wonder members of the Bush junta have no fear of doing so) and who, in the 80s, led a very similar campaing to discredit then-House Speaker Jim Wright and his regional peace-making efforts as the Reagan administration sought to overthrow the Sandanista government in Nicaragua:
It was then-House Speaker Jim Wright who, with the quiet encouragement of Republican realists, notably Reagan's White House chief of staff, Howard Baker, Secretary of State George Shultz and his special Central America envoy, Philip Habib, sought to promote Arias' plan.
Like today's Republican realists on the Iraq Study Group (ISG), who have urged the Bush administration to engage rather than continue to isolate Syria, they understood that popular and Congressional support for a "regime change" policy in Nicaragua was not sustainable and Washington should seek a regional settlement on the most favourable terms available.
But Abrams, then assistant secretary of state for Inter-American Affairs, worked assiduously with fellow hard-liners in the White House and the Pentagon -- just as he works today with Cheney's office -- to torpedo both the Arias plan and Wright's efforts to advance it throughout the latter half of 1987.
It's not only the exact same play, it's being run by the same players, including Jim Baker as the neutered family beagle nobody listens to and the ever-obliging ComPost:
This was not forward movement; this was screwing up the process," the "senior official" complained to the Post which, as in its criticism Friday of Pelosi's meeting with Assad, obligingly followed up with its own editorial, entitled "What is Jim Wright Doing?", charging the speaker with having acted "as though the actual conduct of diplomacy in this delicate passage were his responsibility."The Journal's neo-conservative editorial writers swiftly joined in, accusing Wright of a "compulsion for running off-the-shelf foreign-policy operations," just as last week they charged Pelosi and Democrats of seeking "to conduct their own independent diplomacy".
The Democratic controlled Congress refused to fund the Contras and the rest, as they say, is history.
But Abrams isn't doing it alone. He's got help from the Republican Jewish Coalition, which is funding the ads attacking Pelosi (YouTube above). Think Progress reports that until January, the RJC was headed by Sam Fox, former Swift Boat bankroller, Lieberman BFF and recent imperial appointment to Belgium. The board is quite the rogues gallery and includes Ari Fleischer, David Frum, Sheldon Adelson, Lewis M. Eisenberg and Ken Mehlman. They also financed ads for Lieberman during his senate race, and has some lovely overlap with the Scooter Libby Defense Fund.
Of course all of this would be largely moot if intellectual mediocrities like Susanne Malveaux didn't mindlessly repeat this stuff like it was anything other than sheer nonsense, but unfortunately you don't go to war with the bobbleheads you want, you go to war with the bobblehteads you've got.

.
From This Week at War on CNN with John Roberts last weekend…
ROBERTS: Is this undermining foreign policy, Mike? Let me just read a couple of editorials. This was a rare occasion when “The Wall Street Journal” and “The Washington Post” both agreed on something. Friday in “The Wall Street Journal” and Thursday in “The Washington Post,” quote, Democrats took congress last fall in part by opposing the war in Iraq. But it is becoming clear that they view their election as a mandate for something far more ambitious, to wit, promoting and executing their own foreign policy albeit without the detail of a presidential election.
“The Washington Post” said, we have found much to criticize in Mr. Bush’s military strategy and regional diplomacy. But Mrs. Pelosi’s attempt to establish a shadow presidency is not only counterproductive, it’s foolish. ALLEN: Well and if you are going to go against the president, as A.B. points out, do something very risky, you have to hit a home run. If you’re going to carry a secret message from one leader to another, keep it a secret that protects you from having this back and forth go on. What the speaker’s office said that the message she gave to Syria did include the tough conditions about engaging with Israel, but that got lost in the translation. What the speaker vulnerable to being said she was incompetent in how she handled this.

Exactly. Republicans got Lieberman elected in 1988 (this was the renascent Nixonians’ long-awaited revenge on Lowell Weicker for having morals, a spine and a brain), and they got him elected in 2006.
I have an idea. Get Pat Robertson to invite Cheney to speak at the Regent U graduation on the same day and respectfully decline BYU’s invitation due to a prior engagement:
Martin Stoltz writes in the New York Times about the continuing protests at Brigham Young University against Cheney’s invitation to be the commencement speaker this year.
“Some of the faculty and the 28,000 undergraduate and graduate students, who are overwhelmingly Republican, have expressed concern about the Bush administration’s support for the war in Iraq and other policies, but most of the current protest has focused on Mr. Cheney’s integrity, character and behavior. Several students said, for example, that they were appalled at Mr. Cheney’s use of an expletive on the Senate floor in a June 2004 exchange with Senator Patrick J. Leahy, Democrat of Vermont.
“‘The problem is this is a morally dubious man,’ said Andrew Christensen, a 22-year-old Republican from Salt Lake City. ‘It’s challenging the morality and integrity of this institution.’ . . .
“In the two weeks since the university announced that Mr. Cheney would be the speaker at the commencement on April 26, hundreds of students have attended respectful and quiet campus demonstrations about his presence, and some 3,600 students and alumni had signed petitions by Tuesday afternoon seeking a ‘more appropriate’ replacement speaker

Speaking as a Jew, there is some serious derangement going on in the Jewish community at large for the past few years. My theory is that it stems from a deep seated fear that the State of Israel will be overrun and destroyed by irrational, violent Palestinian hordes and another Holocaust wil ensue while the world, except for Xtian fundies and Bush, looks on and snickers “serves them right.”
This pathology leads them to follow programs and policies that, if anything, do nothing but give all reason to take an anti-Israel stance and actually make such a scenario all the more possible. It is enormously blind and self-defeating. Many American Jews, normally quite liberal, are caught up in this Likud fantasy of agressive self defense, which is, in fact not even shared by many, perhaps the majority, in Israel itself, who have to live with the consequences of these policies. Instead, they align with the hardest right, Likudnik factions which even as they lose support in Israel, gain it within the Bush administration and among the neocons.
I have been telling my relatives, some who feel that Bush is the great protector of the Jewish state, that in reality Bush is the worst possible thing that could happen to Israel and its greatest danger. It’s very hard to get through, although the recent debacle in Lebanon where Israel was humiliated, gave some a small pause. Not yet enough, however.
It is deeply embarrassing that my people, whose cultural heritage is one of tolerance, endurance, and championship of civil rights and justice, values which I was taught literally on my mother’s knee, have, out of senseless fear, strayed so far from the path. It also mirrors what the same fears have done to the American public since 9/11. All the more tragic in that what is attempting to be preserved is what is being destroyed by the very actions that are taken under the guise of that preservation.
Pelosi “has no intention of going to Iran.”

Pelosi went out of her way during her ME trip last week to cover her bases in Israel before advancing to Lebanon, Syria and Saudi Arabia. In her Knesset address, she said all the things you’re supposed to say, clutching replicas of the dogtags worn by Israeli soldiers captured in disputed territory last summer as she dedicated herself, once again, to the cause of Israel.
But the neo-cons at the American Jewish Coalition, whose site illegally morphs the US and Israeli flags, don’t work in the interests of Israel or the US, but serve the interests of deluded Straussian neo-cons.
As somebody pointed out above, most American Jews don’t identify with this shady group - look at their board of directors under the link I provided above - but applaud Pelosi’s efforts, and applaud them heartily.

To: President George Bush

Sen. John Kerry
RE: Who is behind the Pelosi smear?
Every smear orchestrated out of the White House is a reflection on George Bush’s Presidency.
From the smear of Joseph Wilson, which included the disclosure of classified information that his wife was a CIA NOC, an undercover agent, to the smearing of Nancy Pelosi and her recent trip to the Middle East, the thing the Bush White House does well is smear its political opponents. Oh yea, remember McCain’s black love child? That was a good one.

Hey, did my last comment get hung up in moderation? Just askin’.
What Morris Shepphard said at # 60! Yes! I’ve called it multi-generational post traumatic stress. And how much of that fear is irrational? I sometimes wonder, but we have no way of knowing.
The meme that Israel is very, very small, true as it is, needs to be put in perspective. We’re shown maps of Arab and other countries in the Middle East, which appear so huge next to Israel. But when one looks at where the populations live in those countries, the populated areas in each are similar in size - Jordan and Syria in particular. A lot of desert
Lebanon is actually smaller than Israel. The Lebanese government has never attacked Israel once. The Israeli government has attacked Lebanon hundreds of times, five of these attacks being serious invasions which killed scores of thousands of innocents and caused almost a hundred billion dollars in damage to Lebanese property.
Progressive American Jews are often conflicted because they have a direct connection with Israel. One of my Jewish brothers-in-law refuses to talk to me because of my support of Palestinian rights. The other one sends checks, although that’s getting pretty dangerous to do. And he tells me he argues with himself about Israel every time he takes a shower.
Someone should ask Holy Joe and the GOP jewish republicans what are we doing in Iraq if Al Queida is in Pakistan and is causing unrest there. Pakistan ALREADY has nukes and missiles. Iran might get nukes in a few years so why are we not doing anything about the more immediate threat to Israel? Do you think that after wasting so many American lives in Iraq and possible Iran America would be willing to do anything about Pakistan if Al Queida takes over? Vote for Holy Joe and you vote to leave Israel at the mercy of Pakistan which already has Nukes and Missiles capabel of hitting Israel! Al Queida could take over Pakistan in a coup overnight TONIGHT and LAUNCH TOMORROW! Before America could do anything about it!Now that is the kind of flier we should send to every one of Holy Joes hometown voters!

Your comments synch with other views that I’ve heard, and as one friend commented over dinner, “Sometimes, it’s as if (her) Jewish relatives have never quite accepted the fact that Hitler LOST that war.” Sometimes I wonder whether Doug Feith and the rest of them will ever get it through their heads that Hitler, and what he stood for, were d-e-f-e-a-t-e-d and their fears don’t need to bring him back.
On which point, your point that Bush is the worst thing for Israel (and the rest of us) is spot-on. Kerry was winning that election until Osama took it upon himself to release a video just before the election — I don’t for one instant believe that bin Laden wanted Kerry to win. Bush is a perfect foil for bin Laden.
If I were watching this mess from a distant planet, I’d suspect Elliot Abrams of being a Russian spy. The only people who ever get an advantage out of that man’s actions are our political opponents, and every thing he does that makes the US look unreasonable, extreme, and stupid is a benefit to places like Russia and China who are anxious to lock up resources. Geez… !!!

I’m sad to say that it is not just the usual suspects like the WSJ and WaPo
that have been pushing the Peolsi smear.
NPR and PBS have been doing more than their fair share.
Before the election last fall, the local Jewish weekly ran some full-page ads for the RJC and got a lot of letters protesting the misleading content of those ads. Even so, I know plenty of Jews who think only GWB can protect Israel from the (very real) enemies bent on its destruction. Olmert is, unfortunately, the Tony Blair of the Middle East. What’s Hebrew for “poodle”?
Jacqrat @ 48
You may have missed the snark.
Morris Shephard that was a great post. I feel as if Israel’s (and by Israel I mean that relatively small faction within the government not the people as a whole) alignment with the PNAC crowd will be its undoing. If this alliance continues Israel has no future. Israel is on a suicidal course its completing a self-fulfilling prophecy as far as I can tell. The PNAC *strategy* will be the end of Israel as we know it. it’s a terrifying thing to watch unfold.
Jane Hamsher @ 76
It’s not difficult to discuss. Morris Sheppard just did it.
Firedoglake really needs to take on A*P*C at some point: this site has featured a recurring cast of villains who have been accessories to this lobby: Miller, Libby, Lieberman, Hiatt. It is a common thread here.
At some point the Democratic party has to be prodded into breaking with them. This will be hard for a party that last summer voted 410-8 against a cease fire in Lebanon at the very time the Israelis and Hezbollah were dropping bombs on Americans in Beirut and Haifa, but A*P*C has just gone nuts recently.
It betrays weakness that A*P*C has broken their cardinal rule and thrown in whole hog with one party, the Republicans. First they booed Pelosi (after a standing ovation for Cheney) at the A*P*C conference, now they’ve participated in an orchestrated smear.
Now, somehow, we need to get a Democratic politician to disown them as the militant extremist Republican-affiliated outfit they are. That is a longshot, but the only way to break the ice.
I probably don’t need to say it, but something like over 80% of American Jews opposed this war by last count — they are in the same boat as the rest of the country, hostage to an increasingly corrupt and radical constellation of narrow war lobbies, A*P*C among them.

Absolutely correct. Larry Johnson highlighted this on Olbermann’s show last week, I think. It was an excellent point that I had not even thought of.
