Obama joins John Edwards in pulling out of the CBC/Fox Debate:
Barack Obama has chosen not to attend September's presidential debate co-sponsored by the Congressional Black Caucus Institute and Fox News, an aide said, effectively dooming the event.
Obama is the only member of the Congressional Black Caucus running for President, and his decision allows other candidates to skip the debate without facing criticism that they are turning their backs on a leading black institution.
BAR and Color of Change were instrumental in putting pressure on candidates to boycott this, for all the right reasons. Congratulations to them on their success, and to Obama for doing the right thing. This was important.

great news!
Reward good behavior!
I’m glad Obama did the right thing.
Thank you Barack. I love it when politicians to the right thing for the right reason. It is so refereshing.
Maybe someone at Fox will be able to connect the dots and figure out what the message here is.
Naw, who am I trying to kid.
Yay!
Hooray for Jane!!
Hooray for Obama!!
I saw this at TPM & followed it to their source, which was politico.com. I am not well versed in internet I guess because I read the post & I was quite jazzed with how it was handled, posted here, and then went back and read the comments,
Just amazing. I guess I have been successful in isolating myself from the fringe.
yikes.
Perfect.. Obama may actually learn from mistakes and constituents..
How Democratic
And once again Kudos to Edwards for leading the way!

I was gonna ask if ya ever noticed that fat chance and slim chance mean the same thing…
I hope people are turning off/tuning out FOX. I had hope the other day when I went into an office that always has FOX on their teevee and instead of FOX it was on the National Geographic Channel. Small victories.
Wow, this is an excellent move. Note that Edwards has led on both the FOX pullouts.
According to politico’s commenters, this “cowardice” shows that neither Obama nor Edwards has the cojones to stand up to the leaders of the axis of evil, let alone Brit Hume or Bill Orally.
If there was ever a question about who politico.com targets, the comments on this story clear things up. It’s the new knuckle-dragger, cheeto-eater, moms-basement kinda happy place. I sure hope pool boi and Mike ’sloppychin’ Allen are happy with their readership. Every single commenter seems to have a Rove-incoming fax machine.
Good for Sen Obama. Now let the smearing begin. Wait, let the smearing pick up intensity.
Didn’t Edwards say he wouldn’t take part in the fauax debate?
Sens Clinton, Dodd and Biden, not that joe had a chance in hell the ball is in your court.
Yay Barack Obama!
Yay John Edwards!
Boo Faux Nooz!!

Yeah, but why does Obama always have to be worked on to do the right thing? I remember a very wishy-washy Obama before the Alito filibuster. I want a candidate who takes initiative to do the right thing, darnit!
Good video. Faux No News – High Standards in Public Discourse.
mui @ 16
I agree. However, he just expended a ton of political capital and it is the first “risky” thing I can recall him doing.
Maybe he will actually grow a pair?
Maybe it’s just me. OK, it probably IS me, but when I see Mary Matalin like in the video, she looks like one of the old time cartoons with a still picture and the animated mouth superimposed on it. NOTHING on her face moves except for her mouth. Icccchhh and Yuccka!
The Politic-hole is piggybacking on Drudges numbers.
Both Allen and Vandehei are very suspect. Mike Allen’s work at Time proved to me that he was one of Karl Rove’s go to guys for getting Rove’s spin out.

A slightly OT PSA –
Joe Wilson will be speaking on Thursday, at the 59th Annual Conference on World Affairs in Boulder Colorado.

I think that’s the Obama-wants-to-get-along-with-everyone meme. He’s living in a time warp–in a far distant time–when all the current Rs have died off. As long as there’s one left, we don’t want to get along with him. They are vile creatures. This, and his inexperience, is why I think very lowly of Obama. Plus I inherited a charisma-resistant gene.
Jane is right. This is big. For several reason:
1) it means that snubbing FOX has become so mainstream that even Obama is willing to do it
2) it means that Edwards is the big winner here because “frontrunners” find they have to copy his actions. He is setting the pace.
3) it means that polling must be showing that voters are hungering for a leader who acts on principle
4) which means that other politicians will be encouraged to act on principle which has suddenly become fashionable
which bodes well for continuing Congressional oversight AND you may even see MSM framing things in different terms.
GSD @ 20
Has someone put together a list of Rove’s go-to media? Would make a good post.
So, once again it was John Edwards who actually LED THE WAY in doing the right thing.
And his populism certainly seems genuine.
Anybody know if Obama has strong populist sentiments? Is my hunch that he’s closer to the DLC on corporate matters based in reality? Or did I just have a bad dream about it?
GSD @ 20
Please also recall the slobbering Mike Allen got from Chimpy at his first WH press conference as politico’s man. First one called on, with much ado about the new venture from the Chimpster, heh-heh.

So who are the big losers today?
Fox News and Hillary Clinton.

And this would be a swell time to show our appreciation by tipping $5 into Edwards *and* Obama’s ActBlue pages. Good candidates!
eCAHNomics @ 25
ABH, my man. Any(Dem)body But Hillary.
Heard a great interview with Edwards the other day. He said that, after all he and his family have been through, he no longer feels the need to say anything but how he feels and what he believes is the truth.
Cancer can do that. I’ve felt my own liberation as a result of my son’s illness, and we need look no farther than Jane and Howie Klein to see marvelous courage and speaking truth to power after brushes with The Fucker.
Obama has a lot of potential, and good on him for not toeing the line.
Bustenuckles @ 5
Actually, there are probably some bean-counters backstage who are taking note of this, along with the folks at the Fox broadcasting network (as distinct from the Fox News cable station) who work with the local affiliate stations. Neither the bean counters nor the local affiliates will like Fox being held accountable for its rightwingers if it’s going to cost them money:
“First they came for us in Nevada.
“Then they came for us in Detroit.
“Watch out for them on Wall Street, because sooner or later this is going to hurt the bottom line, and that’s going to hurt the stock price.”
Not that this will make the Fox News higherups listen to them, of course. But there are folks watching, and it’s got to be making them very nervous.
(I hear there’s a lot of that nervousness going around these days — DOJ, the White House, Fox . . .)
eCAHNomics @ 32
I’m not sure — maybe the twins need mommy, and the lawyers want Valerie to keep a low profile?
*xyz @ 31
Doesn’t lead.
Doesn’t even follow well.
Does that leave “get out of the way” ??
This video is genius. Finally a way to triangulate for our own benefit. In your face FOX. WE control the message.
Fascinating to watch the wingnuts over on Ben Smith’s Politico blog trot out all their juvenile “You must be a coward! Nyaah!” tricks on Edwards and Obama. As if to say “Wait! Please come back and let me hit you!!?!! PLEEEEZZE???”
See how easy that was, Democrats?
“Be on our show/debate/ambush program.”
“No. You’re a bunch of right-wing whores.”
“We’ll put bad stories about you on the air.”
“You already do. I don’t care. Everyone knows you’re a joke. Go Cheney yourself.”
Well NOW I am certain – I am voting for Edwards and would be thrilled if Obama were his VP. There’s simply no excuse for Hilary not coming out as a non-participant in the Faux debate from the get-go and she has confirmed for me (by her failure to do so) that she is what I had feared – more driven by political strategy than a desire to make a mark in history for progressive causes.
eCAHNomics @ 25
So that’s what it is! I must be charisma-proof! I freely admit I’ve just never been able to figure out what the fuss is about w/Obama. I mean, yeah, he’s nice enough, and maybe he’d be a fine president if the world was a happy, peaceful place, but it’s not. I can’t see him getting us out of Iraq, or through the mess that will ensue, or cleaning the moles out of the administration or outsmarting Newt or whichever UberR he’ll be dealing with in Congress.
Deacon Blues @ 40
Donald and Walter could, I’m sure, put that to music.
I think Obama is making a big mistake. Fox just announced that Don Imus was signed on to moderate this thing.

Yup, and he was the first to bow out of the Nevada FOX debates, too.
They have no choice but to bow out now.
Without Obama, it’s a joke.
Is it true that that Obama will not be accepting pac money?
Seems like he did the politically expedient thing. May be not so much on Edwards’ part, since he was the first to pull out. In any case, whey does not take them this long to decline participation in any Fox sponsored event, it should be automatic until Fox really reforms.

I am beginning to think that IRAN is intentionally trying to create mischief in order to keep Oil Prices elevated. Iran Expands Uranium Enrichment

Actually, Matalin always reminds me of Cruella DeVille, ever since her over-the-top Sunday chat show performance when she lashed out screaming at everyone present.
I’m sure it was the magic metallic hypno-flower on her chest in a day-glo crimson shade to match her extremely long, painted claws that cemented this image.
Do we have any other source on this? Someone speaking officially from the the campaign. Politico has not proven to be a reliable source of news.
I think the Dems should keep scheduling debates with Fox and then cancelling on the basis that Fox is biased, until Fox catches on that it is being suckered.

Tying this thread & the last thread together, I think we should start calling Hillary a R in D clothing. It’s short & it gets the pont accross.
At this point, I am not a huge Obama supporter. Subject to change of course. The political litmus test would be is this candidate a Mother Earth promoter? Is this candidate in favor of pulling out of Iraq now? Is this candidate in favor of no more American unprovoked attacks against any country, certainly including Iran. And is the candidate in favor of a fair settlement to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which inevitably means a U.S. backed establishment of an independendent Palestinian state. Of course there are domestic agenda considerations and a thorough vetting respective of corruption and derivation of campaign contributions.

what is interesting about the comments is that their implicit acknowledgement of how biased Fox News is — especially the comparisons that make Fox the equivalent of Al Qaeda (i.e. “how can democrats expect to take on al Qaeda is they are afraid of Fox News?”)
A question — the banner ad at the top of the Politicaux story indicated that Move-On is hosting a virtual “town meeting” tomorrow night on Iraq featuring “presidential candidates”. However, the only candidates listed as participants are Democrats. Were Rudy, McCain, Romney, etc. asked?
Carville is defending Imus, saying that he would advise candidates to go on the show, and that he should be forgiven.
Feh. This is not a slip. Racist content is an essential part of the show.

The whole thing is kind of weird, really. If you look at the BlogHer guidelines that are cited in the article, it seems to me that they match up pretty well with what the moderators do here.
The real problem is the reporter’s statement “A subtext of both sets of rules is that bloggers are responsible for everything that appears on their own pages, including comments left by visitors,” which seems to me to be entirely incorrect; the actual thrust of the various sets of principles is to set expectations for what is allowed on a site, and to provide a shorthand way of doing that, so everyone doesn’t have to figure it out independently.
I know there have been plenty of obnoxious attempts at imposing “blogger ethics,” but clueless NYT reporters aside, this doesn’t seem to me to be one. Is there something obvious I’m missing?

So, shaving the legs makes me semi-normal? I have just never been the sort to primp. Most days I leave the house with my hair still wet from the shower and no makeup on.
Unless I am seeing a client or have to go to court I usually wear jeans to the office.
I do the hair and makeup thing for public appearances (you know speeches and panels and the very occasional TV interview- stuff like that), but I would rather take the hour that hair and makeup eats up and spend it reading blog before breakfast, or getting in an extra hour of exercise, you know, doing something productive.
Most of my front page posts were written with time stolen away from primping

Ah, Diane Sawyer, a fine Kentucky girl leavened through the prism of the trickster.

Hey there, ol’ pal! So good to see you, still at the barricades, natch!!!
Thanks for those little tidbits of Obama info — did NOT know that he hadn’t resonated in the ‘hood’ quite exactly as advertised.
There’s been something about Obama that gets my phoniness antennae all atwitter and I haven’t been able to pin it down. I suspect him of having DLC corporatist tendencies, but then I hear he’s not going to take corporate money, so then I can’t tell whether I’m overly suspicious or not.
But with you and other astute Firepups around to give us more bits of evidence as they become available, I feel there’ll be time and good opportunity to get a better handle on it all.
A big hug goes out to you, sweetie!
I’m starting to like to sound of a Edwards/Obama ticket. Obama can cut his political teeth in the V.P. seat and look forward to advancement in the future. They can put Gore to good use in environmental oversight. I can dream can’t I?
jayackroyd @ 133
Well, no, you shouldn’t, but do most beginning bloggers get any education in this concept when they start out? There may be a little purely technical guidance (and even there the out-of-the-box options are often of fairly limited flexibility), but nothing to explain the concepts of setting policies and expectations. Ideally, documents that make those concepts easier to grasp would be a good thing.
Absolutely! The times recently when I’ve forgetten to avert my eyes from the comments at the Politico and elsewhere make me appreciate our moderators all the more!

No, it’s a federal civil rights case. I represent someone who had the great misfortune of moving into a very waspy north shore village while being Jewish. They have been hounding this poor guy ever since they found out that he wasn’t “part of the crowd”.
Much pearl clutching and many ugly incidents, shouting religious epithets in the streets, making anti semtic cracks in village hall. Really bizzare attemtts to misinterpret existing statutes to engage in slective enforcement, only it’s not enforcement because he didn’t break any laws.
Just mean nasty crazy stuff. The mayor even tried to get him kicked out of the yatch club. Why should the mayor, who doesn’t sail, give a damn? Just mean.
Of course this was the birthplace of the John Birch Society, back when the Birchers were claiming that all the world’s commerce was controlled by a secret cabal of jewish bankers.
How the world had changed, now Wolfowitz belongs to the JBH, but this little town still cannot tolerate having a Jew within it’s sacred confines.
This village is stuck in some weird time warp, it’s like an anti-semtic Brigadoon. So sad. So ugly.

Or perhaps a Freedom Kiss? *g*
Listening to Imus this morning puke all over himself with apologies for sharp remarks most of his audience tunes in to hear, I was reminded of all the Duke Lacrosse players turned into villains overnight by another N-H-Wo and the anti-European male establishment.
Duke University, affecting the usual intellectual arrogance and intolerance of present day academia, has not puked a fucken word in defense of their three students still facing criminal charges.
Mrs. K8 @ 138
I think some of that is explained by the fact that he’s green. Running for office is a series of tests & running for prez the tests are really hard. Obama’s failed 2 or 3 so far. Then he has to reverse himself. Amore seasoned candidate would have thought about what happens AFTER words come out of your mouth & get into the hands of others.
Hillary’s approach to avoid failing the tests is to avoid saying anything controversial.

Where were you, Punaise, to save me from having to say that?? :)
dakine01 @ 129
Aha, you mean Grima, aka Wormtongue. Just the name Wormtongue sounds like a good fit!
Although the physical resemblance to Gollum is striking, IMO.
Hillary’s approach to avoid failing the tests is to avoid saying anything controversial.
And that’s exactly the problem. There isn’t a single issue that requires presidential leadership that doesn’t also require one to take a controversial position.
PLovering @ 143
No, their wingnut campus paper has. They’ve spared no ink demonizing the profs who called for more attention to on-campus racism.
Oh, and by the way, the Duke Lacrosse players can make villains of themselves, thanks.
Just so you know, I think Nifong should be disbarred.

Imagine the possible choice in 2008. Rudy ‘the G’. against Hillary ‘the right-triangle’. Nooo thanks!

Firepup Patriots:
It’s Gore/Edwards I tell ya…competence, integrity, intelligence, experience and the Democrats won’t hafta take anyone outta their slim Senate numbers. Al Gore could hit the ground runnin’ and we’d be shakin’ the fascists outta the dustbin a history with the Whigs (along with the Whitehouse Intelligence Group).
GORE/EDWARDS…and kick Nazi ass all the way ta the Hague.

“is it live, or is it MammoRex?”
Mrs. K8 @ 140
I don’t think this is entirely accurate. The latest “Nation” even has an article about his community-organizing background, and they could find very few people with anything but postitive things to say about O.
He just lost to Bobby Rush the first time he ran for state sen, which wasn’t surprising.
If you really want to know where he’s coming from, read his books. Especially the first one. For those who don’t “get” his charisma, well, I probably wouldn’t get it either if I hadn’t read his memoir before he became a star. It’s very impressive.
With any luck, the only *cough* Dem *cough* politician to go on Fox will be Joe Lieberman.
One day, hopefully soon, reasonable politicians will figure out that they only get invited on Fox for the purpose of Fox making them looking like fools.
They are propagandists, through and through, and participating in anything Fox does is to further that propaganda. You’d think savvy politicians would figure that out, but perhaps the needs of ego have been greater than good sense.
Why it took Obama–or others, for that matter–this long to come to a decision which doesn’t enable Fox is a mystery.
Clinton is another matter–since Murdoch has been throwing fundraisers for her, she must feel obligated. The old saw about “politics makes for strange bedfellows” is all too true, but I damned sure don’t want to watch that video….

Totally OT of shaving…
Jesus Camp and the directors will be at the local theater Tuesday night. The directors will be taking questions.
If anyone has any questions for the directors about their film, and not their shaving habits, please e-mail them to me. I’ll see what I can do about getting them answered tomorrow night.
send them 2 my username at mac dot com.
Should be an interesting evening. This town of Pitman is less then 3 square miles, and has 13 churches. It was founded as a Methodist summer camp, and is named after a famous Methodist preacher.
A local university the next town over is sponsoring the film.
If anyone is the Philly/SJ area is interested in attending, here’s the link to the theater.

Obama is a media creation.
Something for between wars.
“Barack Obama has chosen not to attend September’s presidential debate co-sponsored by the Congressional Black Caucus Institute and Fox News, an aide said, effectively dooming the event.”
Good for Obama….
Hugh and obvious fox news trap…
Edwards deserves some credit for being first to withdraw from the debate. BUT, I just don’t get the total adulation of the Edwards supporters. Edwards is no longer an elected official. By his own words we know he has nothing to lose by saying whatever he believes to be true now. OK. Why did it take him so long to withdraw from the CBC debate?
Senator Obama, on the other hand, is a MEMBER of the Congressional Black Caucus. He has been pretty much under constant criticism from Black politicians for failing to be “black enough” and he definitely has (and had) some real political consequences to face in boycotting a CBC sponsored event. To my mind, his decision to boycott has a lot more weight than Edwards.
You Edwards people slay me. Scream about Don Imus all you want, it won’t perfume the stench of racism that permeates your posts. You are so threatened by Obama’s candidacy (and the fear the the party might choose an unelectable black man thus robbing you of your slam dunk election in 2008) that you would rather have Edwards?
All I can say is that the Edwards of today is a far cry from the Senator from South Carolina that he used to be, a co-sponsor of the Iraq War resolution, a former member of the DLC. You would choose him, a man who has no grass roots political experience, over Obama who made his bones on the streets of South Side Chicago? You would pick a trial lawyer who got rich suing doctors over a professor of Constitutional Law?
Give me a break. It isn’t Obama who’s a coward. It is you Edwards supporters who don’t have the courage to support the real Progressive candidate because he happens to be black. He has the most community experience of any candidate. He has the most experience as an elected official among the top three candidates. None of this seems to matter.
You have invented a progressive Edwards out of whole cloth and now you intend to force him down the throats of the rest of us. IT’S NOT WORKING. While you natter on about your immunity to charisma, Obama is doing what he knows best. He is building a grass roots army of support. His first quarter report is just the beginning. So, go ahead and support the usual white guy from the South. Pretend that you’re making a statement for the Progressive movement in the first year when this country could actually elect a woman or a man who isn’t the usual white guy from the South. You are only fooling yourselves.
Now, don’t get me wrong. I prefer Edwards over Clinton like most others on this site. He is clearly the pick of the litter among the usual white guys who are running. If he wins the nomination, I can vote for him with a clear conscience. But, half the crap that is spewed about Obama on this and other so-called Progressive sites is just sickening. To be opposed to someone because he is charismatic and inspires people is just the most ridiculous bullshit ever.
I think that Edwards led the charge against Fox “News.” Edwards has demonstrated that he’s ready to lead as evidenced by his health plan, for example. I would love to see an Edward/Obama ticket or an Obama/Edwards ticket. That would be a winner.
Obama has the intelligence and charisma of Clinton and Edwards has the charisma and intelligence of JFK. They’d make a great team no matter who was first on the ticket.
