Apparently it is now going to be OK to frivolously blow the whistle on anyone as long as you say they might be a terrorist. They have got to be looking at his role. In my opinion, while Imus is responsible, McGuirk is the one who needs to be fired or silenced. Maybe this is what Imus is talking about when he says he’s going to serve the suspension and make his show a better program.

He was free to call Gwen Ifill a “cleaning woman”
He was free to say one of his producers was “in charge of n-word jokes”
He was free to insult the Rutgers women’s basketball team.
He is now free to face the collective consequences of those acts.

And there’s the little matter of Imus using CBS and MSNBC as the means. He was suspended not for free speech but for embarrassing his corporate employers, and at a time when the MSM is doing stories about the uncivil blogs, suggesting they need to clean up their acts to be taken seriously — and then Imus speaks in the same way he always does and gets caught in their hypocrisy.

JJ is right to call attention to all the other obscenities, but it doesn’t follow that Imus should be excused or that CBS and MSNBC are not responsible for what their stars say. Let them stew in it a while, and make it harder for Disney/ABC to justify Melanie Morgan and friends, etc, etc.

Clarence Page, on CNN, chiming in on Imus, admitting he has “enabled” Imus by going on his program. Lots of folks looking in the mirror this a.m.

But that’s precisely a free speech issue. And he should face accountability. Consequences. But also, the consequences must be proportional.

And like Joel Hollander and Hamilton Jordan, I take the context of the whole man, and look around and wonder where were the voices will be speaking out about the racist response to Katrina, or wounded soldiers, or sick kids if we are dumbed down to just Matt Lauer and Katie Couric and Rush Limbaugh and Tucker Carlson and the rest.

And sidebar to David Gregory…Lester Holt, last time I looked, appears to be African-American.
