There are so many things I could write about tonight. MSNBC, for example, and their decision to slap the wrist of that dickhead in the cowboy hat. Two weeks' suspension? Oooh, that'll hurt. I bet Don cries the whole time he's sitting on that beach in Cancun.
If you're a straight, white man in this country, what the hell level of incompetence, arrogance, and idiocy does it take to get fired from your job? Don Imus is, was, and always will be a fatuous, race-baiting, tin-eared tosspot who looks like he stole his stupid cowboy hat off a mule. (In other words, he is radio's very own George W. Bush.) My favorite moment so far of his implosion? This defense, which he levelled at a caller from Ebony magazine:
IMUS: "Don't talk about me doing used car commercials. I'll bet you I've slept in a house with more black children who were not related to me than you have. Do not get into my face about this…"
Psyche! That caller was actually Michael Jackson. You lose, Mr. Imus! Wah-wah-waaaaaaaah…
Or, I could write about the fact that Wrong Way Malkin and cohorts are using the Online Misogyny flap to paint themselves up as maligned victims of Liberal Hate Speech, while blithely ignoring the fact that wherever Malkin points her dangerously unhinged readers in one of her redneck fatwas, death threats and harassment follow. Oh, yeah, Michelle, you're such a free speech martyr! I see you sent your homophobic, racist understudy, Mary Katherine Ham to stick up for you on CNN. What, did you have a prior engagement burning a cross on a Lebanese family's lawn?
I swear, there's nothing like watching shrill, feather-brained, partisan attack dogs decry online harassment. It makes my eyes bleed.
But speaking of the Hot Air-heads, their round of back-slapping and jizzing in their own laps over their fake photoshop prank has quieted down considerably since it has become apparent that we still want to see Karl Rove's illegal emails. Nice try, brain donors, but like I said before, one cheesy photoshop prank does not obviate the fact that Rove's withheld emails constitute a violation of the Presidential Records Act. We're going to need to see those emails, Mr. Rove. We can do this the easy way or the hard way, but either way, those materials need to be turned over to the Congress. Thank you for your prompt attention in this urgent matter.
But really, the thing I want to write about tonight is the NEW BJORK SINGLE, which will be available from iTunes at midnight tonight, but you can listen to it with a fixed graphic in the YouTube clip above. I like it! For a while there, it seemed that Bjork was going to be perfectly content to slide into the structureless, groove-free realm of what I call "Art with a Silent 'F'". She put out the soothing, but ultimately kind of dull "Vespertine", and then followed it up with "Medulla", an album recorded entirely with voices, no instruments, which, unfortunately, resulted in what has to be the dullest album of her career.
So, I am very glad to hear that "Earth Intruders" , the new single, from the album "Volta" is a solid, tribal-drumming throw-down with plenty of room for the Icelandic Pop Goddess to roar and growl and whisper, which, frankly, is what I fell in love with her singing for. It's vocal technique from the canals of Mars. Nobody sings, writes, or records music quite like Bjork, and her new album promises to tackle the topics of politics, human rights, and terrorism, and features tracks produced by superstar hip-hop producer, Timbaland. (Something about that pairing reminds me of this delightful bit of flash animation.)
In other music news, I anxiously await the arrival of the new Tori Amos record. This one (her ninth) promises to be one of the most overtly political of her career, and I read this awesome bit from an interview on MTV.com:
"The way to really combat the right wing is to not be subservient to them on any level, particularly when it comes to ideology," she continued. "Therefore, you better offer up another ideology that can combat theirs, and as a preacher's daughter, I understand their ideology inside and out. Frankly, they've all hijacked Jesus and his message. I'm sorry, but 'Love thy neighbor as yourself' is nowhere to be found, especially in our current regime, who, in the name of God, is sending our young men and women to die over there [in the Middle East]."
Whoa! Holy shit, Tori! Have you been reading my blog?
Actually, Tori has become quite the blog fan, apparently. The songs on her new album feature a cast of muses, all of whom have their own blogs. So far, I have found two of them, but there are two more scattered somewhere across cyberspace. I have to think that the little goth chick character MUST have her blog on livejournal, but I haven't found it, yet.
What a coup it would be if I could get Tori to sit down for a blog interview here at FDL! I'm going to get on that and see what I can come up with. I think Tori is really speaking to the issues faced by women in this country and the world, and I would love to get her take on the power and possibilities of the liberal blogosphere.
And that's what I've got tonight, kids! Any questions? Any answers? Anybody care for a mint?

Hey T!
Hey Trex!
ccmask!!
Ann in the Same State I am!!!
I’d like a mint.
Evening TRex.
Dang me!
I think we’ve got Turdblossom with this one: http://thumbsnap.com/v/s92ARniX.jpg
Gen Rex. That is what the newspaper called boomers tonight in their banner headline.
RRRRROOAARRRR!
Maybe Tori’s got a song for the redeployed. Maybe she can sing them into laying down their arms.
I just found out the grandson of good friends has to go back.
Maybe Tori can make it all stop.
Mint, please.
Has anyone ever toiled in a workplace where Imus’ words would be tolerated? I never have. I can’t imagine anyone keeping their job in a 21st century workplace after saying such a thing. So, how are the airwaves different?
Hello, Mr TRex!
Wow, it’s like a box of assorted Godiva chocolates tonight, TRex! Yum!
Quiet here in vacation-land. Too much time to think and too little time (or access) to get on line. Feel like I’m in a massive time out. [sigh]
Hope all the other FirePups are making up for it, though.
Good evening, good evening. Nice blog post TRex, but I’ve managed to get this far in the week with no clue at all as to what Imus said, so I think I will be off topic from that.
Uh, why do I think “We Are The Earth Intruders” sounds like it should be on Dr. Demento’s next anniversary CD set? Just saying…
possibly the best freewayblog yet…

Lou Costello @ 7
The picture I wanna see is of Rove (unshopped) bawling like a three-year-old who’s lost his mother in WalMart, snot dribbling from his nose, as he’s being questioned by Patrick Leahy.
“Based on this document, wouldn’t you like to revise that last comment, Mr. Rove? Get Mr. Rove some tissues, please….”
Said it before, I’ll say it again: I’m still waiting to hear Imus and his minions apologize to Jill Carroll for calling her a terrorist for trying to save her life after she was kidnapped last year.
((((((Rayne)))))))
We miss you enjoy your vacation.

Are there enough embarrass mints to go around?

Lou Costello, your link didn’t work. Tried twice.

Good for you Aunt Betsy! My sincere advise to you is to stick your fingers in your ears an’ start singin’ “lalalalalala”!
Dunno if it’s been posted yet here today, but this makes me really, really sad.
I mean, there’s no way I would have recognized the guy by looks alone, but I’ve spent 10-15 minutes watching far lesser performances from other street musicians.

There is no “off topic” on Late Nite. So cheers!

Hot damn! I LOVE that one!
I don’t listen to Imus or Limpbaugh or any of them. Waste of my airwaves with all their hate talk and accusations and negativity.
I had never heard of Imus until Feb 22 or so when I picked up this that he was EARLY on top of the Walter Reed Shame Scandal. CREDIT when it’s due.

Maybe we can now get O’Reilley for that comment about wanting terrorists to blow up Coit Tower!? WAY too close to home. And why isn’t he in Jail?
And Limbaugh should then be doing the frog march…

I’m very pleased to say that Don Imus’ words have never soiled my beautiful ears.
But the sign didn’t say EVIL sack of shit….
1) Imus doesn’t get it…His whole presentation reflected that.
All he did was put it into people’s faces firsthand, then took the limo back to the park bench. Smooth move, Ex-Lax.
2) Kitty Ham ‘N’ Egger and Micki Malted aren’t even a side dish anymore for the red raw meat appetite that they have inculcated in their audience…Good luck riding the big waves of blood at Sharkbite Cove, girls – Should have stuck to boogie boards at the beach break.

But today! Ah, today I thought of googling it. And now I know…..and by George I’ve been EPU’d myself…..

Congratulations, oddmommy.
I think MSNBC would be smart to move it from 2 weeks to forever. I suspect a really good lawyer could find further evidence of racial slurs on Imus and go after the deep pockets that allowed it to continue.

It’s not the airwaves that are different — it’s the alleged media critter on those ‘waves. Lots of DJs and radio folks have lost their jobs for less than this, but they don’t have huge syndication deals and are not belived to bring in huge amounts of cash to their stations.
Imus is Leona Helmsley with a bad hat: “there’s me, and then there are the little people.”
TRex, how is your modem woes?
Terry Olson @ 32
We tend to think of the public sphere or the commons or the airwaves as NOT a workplace, but when you put it into that context, it’s quite clear to me that what Imus said would not be acceptable. If you said what he said at work, would you expect only a two-week suspension?
What makes the standards for Imus different?
With regard to the team, I bet they won’t meet with him (it’s been proposed as part of his apology). And then they’ll be demonized on the right. So what? I wouldn’t meet with him either after what he said. Why should they engage in his public contrition or, as Howard Fineman called it to his eternal shame, this “teaching moment?”

Also, there is a distinct possibility that my new shoes came today, as well.
I love how KO said tonight that he hasn’t gone on Imus’ show for many years because of his behavior. I love that!
bdu @ 24
Actually, people probably did recognize him or at least the music he played, but come on — this was at a DC Metro stop during the morning rush hour. People have to get to work or lose their jobs in Bush’s wonderful new world. If he’d done it during the noon hour over at the Smithsonian, he’d have had lots more people listening. As it was, he picked up a little over $30 for less than an hour’s busking, so he didn’t do that badly — I know professional buskers who are lucky to do that much in a day.
I’ve never watched Imus- although I’ve seen his commercials. My guess is that he thought he was bein cute and a little edgy with his comments- guess again Donny.
Just a total dumbshit thing ta say- and he’s gettin paid back- in spades!
OK Boys and girls – I have been listening to Imus forever (ask me about him) And I have been with you all for a while – and he is THE BIG SHINY OBJECT. Trust me
Hi, Matt! Hi, TRex and everyone(waving).
I’m not much into today’s music, stuck in the classic rock age, I guess, but someone mentioned anti-war songs the other day. For some reason I went to YouTube to check out what’s available and I searched Country Joe and discovered that, not only is he still around, he has written a new anti-war song, “Support the Troops.” He also wrote a song about Katrina. I hadn’t realized that, or that there are still many, many anti-war songs currently being written.
As far as Rove fracturing yet another Executive Order, all I can say is you’d think we’d have learned by now that Executive Orders were not meant for Rove to observe. If he doesn’t care to follow the rules, he doesn’t have to. Apparently Bush puts in a clause with invisible ink that exempts Rove from all EOs, because nobody ever seems to enforce them. So far, I don’t think I’ve ever even gotten an answer as to who is responsible for enforcement of EOs. Not that it matters, since the Justice Department is non-functioning at the moment. So, who ya gonna call? Some things are just truly disgusting.
Which brings me to Michelle Malkin. Why in the world would anyone feel bad for a person so callous as to publish another person’s address or phone number? The only reason someone would do that is so that the rabid throngs could go to their house and personally harass another person. That type of person doesn’t deserve the time of day. And on that note, it’s my bedtime. G’Night all!
TRex @ 52

They were all over that on Howard Stern today. Stern not only hates Imus as his biggest rival, but his co-host Robin Quivers either once worked for Imus or knows people who did; he’s apparently notorious for holding the paychecks of non-white employees in front of him and saying “here, n—-r!”
A bjork song I havent heard? TRex, like Jesus, is truly magic.
EvilDrPuma @ 43
I just wish he’d gone to church on Good Friday, and listened to the story of the crucifixion.
To review: Jesus is arrested on trumped up charges, brought before a court overseen by Pilate, the local head of an imperial army of occupation. Pilate sees no evidence against Jesus to justify his arrest, let alone his execution, but refuses to stand up to a crowd thirsty for blood, and orders him killed. Along the way to death row, Pilate’s soldiers torture and abuse Jesus, mocking him, whipping him, and taking his clothes.
The story sounds so Bush-like, with Pilate in the role of Bush, and yet I suspect Bush would miss the comparison.

If that’s true, then the workplace metaphor just stopped being figurative. Yup, time to can his scraggy white ass.
AZ Matt (51) — yeah, even the Repugs are quite angry about the DOJ crap. Wonder whether Chiara is ever going to emerge from her hidey-hole and get on some righteous anger since she asked about the VAWA job and it was given to that Repug-ho Buchanan to do in addition to her first job…what a slap in the face to Chiara. Apparently not enough of a Bushie, even with the kneepads she put on.
AZMatt-
You’ve got a repeated sentence in your 2nd paragraph. Otherwise, holy wow!
FITZ! Oh wait…he’s a straight, white, male…isn’t he!
I think that the Bush Administration and corporate America has demonstrated quite well that they’ll protect the jobs of incompetent gays (Haggard), blacks (Justice Thomas), Latin Americans (Abu Gonzalez), women (Condy, Ann Coulter), and even drug-abusers and pedophiles as long as that arrogance, incompetance and idiocy serves their purposes.
It’s actually competancy, intelligence and diplomacy that they fear. Such things seem to get one fired…or at least in a posiyion where one might get fired since one is less (least) likely to be serving the goals of ones task-masters.
And these folks will even conceal their agenda by firing people “that serve at the pleasure of the President” to move an incompetent into their post and call it “Affirmative Action”.
Madelaine on colbert now!

I don’t really think of Bush as being quite as passive an enabler as Pilate is depicted to be. Still, your point remains.

Good Evening!
A little riff here on the whole Imus controversy… I put some of this over at dKos earlier tonight.
First, I want to say that I personally don’t like Imus at all. Never have. I’ve listened to him for a total of about ten minutes of my life, and found him to be boring, rude and sexist. I haven’t heard as much as many people because I have no interest in tuning in, after what little I heard. I wasn’t all that surprised to hear about his racist and sexist slurs from the other day.
Ed Schultz was on “Tucker” today, and he got his butt handed to him by the former bowtie-wearing host.
Schultz was completely blindsided by Tucker’s frame: that liberals are hypocrites because they have no outrage regarding Imus’ behavior. Tucker kept yelling and interrupting Schultz, saying that “the same people on the left who vilified George Allen for his ‘macaca’ comment are defending Imus”. Why Schultz didn’t ask for some verification of this claim is beyond me. Schultz was correct in trying to say that it isn’t really the same thing to compare Allen to Imus (though he didn’t clearly say why: while Imus made these insensitive racist and sexist comments, but we don’t know that he has a noose in his office, and he hasn’t been winking and laughing while giving apologies like Sen. Macaca). Schultz touched on how comparing a Senator isn’t the same as comparing a radio host, saying that the people voted to not re-elect Allen. Tucker made a fairly decent point that a racist comment is a racist comment… but Schultz would have been smart to instead compare an apple to an apple – Imus and Glenn Beck. Then, he could ask where this “outrage” is about Glenn Beck’s many repugnant hate-filled statements.
What Schultz didn’t do was to challenge Tucker on the notion that the liberals who ripped on Allen are supporting Imus. From what I’ve seen, many liberals are disgusted and offended by Imus’ comments, just like they are appalled by Glenn Beck’s many offensive comments. Comparing Beck and Imus is a better comparison than Allen/Imus, IMO because both radio/TV guys have the same type of platform and responsibility to their viewers/listeners. Plenty of liberals like me are disgusted with both of them (and Allen, too!)
I’m still annoyed that he didn’t at least make one important clear point: that decent people denounce hate speech, no matter whose mouth it comes from. Have people like Tucker, who are screaming for Imus to be fired, been also calling for CNN to fire Beck?
It’s not a right/left or Republican/Democrat or conservative/liberal thing. Either you are across the board renouncing offensive behavior like this, or not. It’s not a political issue – its a moral issue.
Oh dear, I don’t like being on the same side as Tucker about anything.
When my 3 cousins came back from ‘Nam, their psychological trauma was not treated. They were cut loose to fend for themselves, endured years of alcohol and drug abuse until one of them found love and got the support to clean his life up. Then he helped the other two to do the same. Now my nephew is in Iraq for 18 of the last 19 months and they want to extend his duty yet again. The administration abuses our soldiers in the worst possible way, yet demand unrelenting servitude from them, even in a criminal enterprise that is the Iraq war.
I hope Pelosi and Murtha can end this because the Senate Dems do not seem to have the numbers to do so.
Meanwhile, Canadian Soldiers are being targeted by IEDs and suicide bombers, while our Fat Fuck P.M. stuffs his face with Big Macs and basks in their glory.
I am beyond angry, so I’m going to stop now. Thanks to FDL for providing a forum for expressing my outrage.
Suzanne @ 71
I don’t know about that. The big “Beware of Therapod” sign out front must make them think before making a delivery. “OK, I’ve got two options: (1) just slow down, toss the package up to the porch, and gun the engine before he comes out, or (2) I ever so quietly and politely bring the package up to the door on a velvet pillow, so as not to anger him?”
Guessing wrong could have very painful consequences.
(brought forward from epu land so I don’t break the keyboard.)

Medical epidemiology demonstrates GLBT kids subject to peer abuse have rates of suicide/ suicide attempt/ educational failure greatly exceeding those of GLBT kids with peer support.
GLBT kids are already at far higher risk of suicide than other kids – adjusting for all other socioeconomic variables.
Students in compulsory schooling are subject to the state’s in loco parentis power. The state is obliged to provide safe accomodations for those compelled to endure the states confines in the public schools.

Kinda.
As a physican, medical educator, human being and a person who learned my fundamental core values in a tolerant Protestant household, I am far more interested in objective measures of survival and health than in any other perspective.
Those who place the safety and survival of our young people as their first priority would do well to step away from teh ideology and any idiosyncratic opinions and towards the hard cold dead epidemiology on LGBT youth.
Those who fail to do so – out of fear, prejudice, or (self)hatred – choose to increase the number of hard cold dead LGBT youth.
Amateurs’ failed public health policy doesn’t spin well.

Seriously, Bell is arguably the greatest violinist of his generation, certainly one of the finest musicians in America. It really is a sad story – to realize that people can’t even appreciate utter beauty around them because they are so self-absorbed in their own lives.
Having lived in a city where we had subway musicians (I never gigged like that), the vast majority of them are complete amateurs. There have been times when I’ve been tempted to say, “I’ll give you $20 if you’ll let me tune your guitar”, but I’ve refrained. I would think anyone that is even remotely near the caliber level of Joshua Bell would make a lot of people stop in their tracks. That is, if you are aware of what is going on in the world around you.

ccmask: like I said, I’ve only managed to listen to about 15 minutes of Imus before, and I was thoroughly annoyed and disgusted with what I heard. So, I’m not really aware of his politics (other than he seemed like a racist, sexist pig). So, what you say is quite interesting. Nice move by Tucker and his conservative buddies, then – they managed to convince people who aren’t aware/knowledgeable of Imus that Imus is a liberal and that the liberals are all defending him – two lies in one fell swoop!
Grrrr.

Cassie, I have read your blog – and you talk about ideas and have something to say.
Living in SF, I get to see lots of creative efforts with sexual themes – and even though I’m esthetically challenged, the art feels real and alive.
Wonkette didn’t bring me new ideas or a sense of connection with something real and alive.
I also found myself wondering about the why of the pervasive sexual disclosure…..
I started wondering if the author felt her ideas merited attention without anal sex references, and that seemed sad and very not post-feminist…
but very oppressed.
So those are merely my speculatons. I don’t dislike the founder…but reading her makes me feel kinda sad for her.

Imus has been dead for awhile now, but nobody’s told him. I don’t know how extensive his following is, not very, I think. He and his boring wife and that cancer camp for kids, is rumored to be some kind of scam so they could raise money. Somebody should look into that.
Shock jock Howard Stern who is now on satellite radio, said Imus used to think he was a peacock way back in the day when they used to play 45 records at NBC. Ironical Imus is called a shock jock.
Not-so-fun fact:
The going rate for mechanics in Monterey, CA is almost DOUBLE what it is in the Bay Area; $155. per HOUR.
Depressing.
Imus has been around forever. The first time I heard him the slots fell out of my crib.
I hate to say it, but I have, and the speakers of these words were Black. N this, Ho that, Bitch that, MF everything, etc.
Bill Cosby was pilloried by the black community for saying that using these words was wrong. I believe Mr. Cosby is right, and no one, from Imus to the ghetto rapper, has any right to use them and be let off the hook.
LoudounLib @ 108
Good Evening nice to see you LoooooudounLib
Prarie,
I thought that exchange was a bit illuminating on Gergory’s part.
For all of his go git ‘em antics in the Bush pressers, he doesn’t really seem all that sharp or swift thinking.
He really let Jesse Jackson bowl him over and simply didn’t state categorically that Alison Stewart is an African-America woman with her own show on MSNBC.
Seems stretch is great at playing attack with a well written question in front of him, but nothing more.
-GSD
Jacqrat @ 112
Why do they charge so much? My brother is a mechanic and he charges a lot less.
Hey lolo, nice to see you as well :-)
Unfortunately, Imus will get a break. Tomorrow they will announce who is the daddy of Anna nicole’s baby, so the country will turn it’s attention back to that. The attention will die down on Imus and he will slide back into being a sexist, racist bore in two weeks while everyone is paying attention to a new shiny object.
The shop that employs the mechanic charges that rate for the mechanic’s time. They do not pay him that amount.
Here’s the thing about Imus:
As a long time listener : here is the Imus thing – He is medium smart – he is not dumb but not brilliant. He leaves it up to three people in his life: His wife Deidre: Who is stupider than shit; Bernie McKirk – his producer- who is smart but a way right winger; and Chuck Mc Cord – who is way smart but a born again christian. I am not defending his position – but sayin’ BRIGHT SHINY STUPIDER OBJECTS THAN HIM
Suzanne @ 120
My brother is mostly a mechanic for military trucks, but he also has his own tools and stuff and will go to people’s house or work on his day off and fix their car. Most people pay him cash, but sometimes he does barter stuff. Before we came to live here he bartered for home-cook meals and for tutoring for me.
GSD @ 116
He was like a deer in the headlights, he can never be a KO. He seemed nervous and off beat.
Cassie @ 122
And now we do most of our bartering in-house. :) Time for Cassie to say good night!
Cassie @ 107
Blockquotes always come in pairs, with “blockquote” inside the signs to open and “/blockquote” inside them to close. If you are quoting a comment that quotes a comment that quotes a comment, you’re in danger if you try again. If any of these comments contain un-embedded URLs as links, the danger is much worse.
It’s generally best to snip comments one at a time, starting with the inner-most one. Locate this first comment, then back up to the “a ref=” . . . tag. Highlight from there all the way to and including the “/blockquote” tag at the end of the quote, delete the highlighted text, then hit “Preview comment” to see if it looks like you think it should. If it doesn’t, you can either try to correct it or delete the whole mess and start over.
Note: My comment at 106 is two quotes in succession, not one nested inside another, so it’s not a good example.
Cassie @ 96
Hey Cassie – I broke it a number of times and Suzanne fixed it for me – Thanks Suzanne!!
Bye everyone. see you tomorrow.
Suzanne @ 119
I get that. They charge ME that much, though.
Drove down to Monterey for my nephew’s wedding. Had to beg a ride home with someone. My car is being held hostage two hours away.
Cassie, your brother does honest work and is paid for his sweat, whether in barter or cash.
That shop owner is profiting off the sweat of his employee.
Your brother’s way is honorable.
Breaking News:
DNA tests prove Don Imus is Keith Richards father.

I mus is a pig, always has been IMO.
Contessa Brewer…
Brewer, in the spring of 2005, served briefly as a news reader on the popular “Imus in the Morning” radio show that is broadcast out of Secaucus, New Jersey, syndicated nationally, and broadcast on MSNBC; but her tenure was brief, and she became embroiled in a public feud with Don Imus after the New York Post published a gossip item in which she was overheard disparaging the radio personality. Among several insults, Imus had called Brewer “fat” on his radio show, despite the fact that she is of average weight and height.

TexasBetsy @

Well, TexasBetsy, Don Imus did nothing more than call the Rutgers University women’s basketball team “nappy headed ho’s.” To make that clearer, he called the black team members fuzzy-headed whores.
That seems egregious to some of us – and some of us includes me (a straight caucasian guy living in Hawaii who didn’t hear the comment but read it quoted several times in several different places) believe that the scumbag should be fired outright and that a two-week suspension is not even a wrist slap. He should be fired and all of his weak and so-called apologies should be expunged from any and all public records.
We’ll never do anything more than encourage these scumbags from spewing their garbage if nothing more than a two week suspension is the worst possible punishment.
So why isn’t the media trumpeting the news that Halliburton just finished their oil contract in Iran.
We’ve been treated to pictures of Speaker Pelosi in a hijab…..cartoons of her meeting Bin Laden?

Everything is more expensive out here, especially in the SF Bay area. The only exceptions to this rule are fresh seafood, fresh produce, and wine.
I love crab, I eat my veggies, and I drink wine — but apparently not in large enough quanitites to save enough to cover the outrageous housing costs, fuel costs, etc. For that matter, I don’t believe a therapod could consume enough crab, veggies, and vino to make that equation balance.

Yay! New Bjork and Tori. XD Two long favorites of mine.
I wish i could be more talkative tonight, but i’m plain thrashed from visiting my parents over the weekend. I spent a weekend with the family and my lapcat, Velvet. We also went over some plans for the upcoming surgery of mine, so that’s a little less worry off my back too.
Now i just need some sleep.
TexasBetsy @ 169
Others may speak more specifically about what I suggest here, but, using the gay marriage issue as a political wedge is an attempt to make second-class citizens of gays for purely political purposes (they don’t seem to mind having gays pushing their agenda for them–witness Ken Mehlman’s role at the RNC, for example).
This has broader ramifications–by relegating gays to second-class status, it encourages, on many different levels, discrimination and has a tendency to get the eliminationists whipped up a bit, and gives them the feeling that hate crimes are okay, that society endorses such. That makes life for gays that much more difficult in the places where they are somewhat marginalized to begin with.
Something like that.

Helen,
I read in one of Molly Ivins’ books about the time she broke her glasses and called to get new ones—she already had the prescription. “You have to get an eye exam and a new prescription; this is just over a year old.”
Hm, she thought. That’s gonna cost me a bundle just because the boys at the statehouse passed a law. My old Rx was just fine.

They can’t admit it, even to themselves, so they have to charge ahead more aggressively and forcefully against it. Then they have the stupidity to rant with friends with the same problem. It grows, and grows, and grows. Lather!
LoudounLib @ 190
Thanks. It’s a routine outpatient laproscopy. So it should be fine. It’s just that it’s the first time i’ve ever gone under the knife. So there’s some nerves involved. But other than that? the logistics of work arrangements (medical leave of absence paperwork) are probably the most annoying part of it all. The family ones are easier.
Oh, and i always thought Imus was a boring blowhard. I put him in the same class as Limbaugh even if he claims to be on the ‘left’ side of things. Same aspects of voice and radio tactics, same species as far as i’m concerned. I ignore them both.

I never played in the subway outside of NYC, but it seems that this musician was making some fundamental mistakes common in my trade.
From the look of things, he wasn’t playing on a platform where people wait for the trains. In order to get by downstairs you have to stand where people can stop and listen for at least the length of a song and a half, by popular standards.
If folks have ever been in the subway at Times Square or 34th St, you’ll see that the only folks who play in the Mezzanines are the rap dancers and the Andean flute bands. (Then there’s that guy who ballroom dances with the life sized doll.)
Strangely, no matter how good you are downstairs, there is a science to the business of subway music. (Folks reach for their money when they hear the train coming.) If he had played to the three to four minutes between trains, the results would have been different.
montag –
Edited above to add the rimshot.

Bush would have said that he was an enemy combatant; after all, he was from a different state that was viewed with suspicion, and he had fomented a riot in the central business district on a major holiday. Then he would have sent him to Gitmo to obtain “intelligence” from him about his supporters, who were clearly security risks. After all, one of them was reported to have cut off the ear of a member of the plutocracy, so they were therefore a risk to the State. He would of course have authorized aggressive interrogation techniques in order to protect the public. His handlers knew what to do with people who didn’t cooperate.
The difference was that Pilate’s judgment was that Jesus was not guilty, and he wanted to let him go.

The Wonkette was one of the first to draw me to the blogs. But that’s way back when Ana Marie Cox was the Wonkette. I saw her on TV and went looking for her blog. It was snarky and sarcastic and (given my newbie state of ignorance at the time) informative. But after Ana Marie left, The Wonkette started to slide downhill in quality and insight.
One of Ana Marie’s first successors was OK– remember the Panda-love period? That was kinda cute, but not very informative unless you were obsessed with infant pandas in zoos. By then I had graduated to MyDD and DailyKos. They were good until after the November 2006 election. Then I discovered FDL and have been a Firepup since– and happy to be here!

“Troller Coaster …. of Rove”
The Lurking Mod tells me the backstage crew has cleaned up all the mess. If anyone has not refreshed the page in the past few, please do so.
Let’s give a nice round of applause to the backstage crew.

Hooray!
And burn the mops.
Terry Olson @ 235
Oh, yeah.
I wish I could find a photo.

Ah, there’s a good community service for him… they can make him a ride at Six Flags.
Okay, Lou. How the hell do you come across articles that tell us about octopuses opening bottles?
I mean, really, this has got to take research skills to the limit.
Patrick 4/4 @ 302
reference to another Chili Peppers song, cover of a 70s freak-funk song of dubious repute: Roller Coaster of Love. I’ll look for it.
Terry Olson @ 311
Nah, that’s just deep-sea surfing. :)

yay, mods
Alicia @ 286
I’m a full time caregiver to my disabled wife, and it’s really a stretch for me to be away from home for more than 4 or 5 hours at a time. In order to prevent what’s called “Caregiver Burnout” I bring my guitar downstairs and scream at the world a few times a week.
There’s still way too much month left at the end of the money though.
punaise @ 312
That would suit Rove perfectly. He’s of dubious repute, too. :)
Late to the dance again I see. Imus showed me that he was a self-serving hack thirty years ago. Back in the late 70’s, during the period when American Graffiti was all the rage, I heard Imus claiming on his show that it was all him and that the Wolfman was a two bit imitator.

Lou Costello @ 295
what an interesting story thanks.

It happens to the best.

Does it resemble this?

I really love my audience, and even after the dust cleared from the attack, I can still sing better than Bob Dylan.
Thank you.

What was that quote? I’ll fuck him like he’s never been fucked before?.
high-brow all the way:
Love Rollercoaster
Helpless Dancer @ 330
Something like that…. But, given what Karl’s been up to in the last few years, he’d better watch out. Someone might be saying the same thing to him soon….
I prefer to think of Karl Rove via a different quote – “fair game”.
Suzanne @ 333
Now, that’s textbook irony, that is. :)
montag @ 330
By some guy named Bruno. I guess the pasty white ones make the best bitches.
Just a reminder.. prison rape jokes are not tolerated at the lake.
I downloaded the Bjork song and the more I listen to it, the more I like it. It sounds deceptively simple on the surface, but the rhythms and cross rhythms are incredibly complex.
punaise @ 326
Rock your socks off.
Its nice to have happy bjork back.

I dunno TRex, Imus could have been right on this one. I think MJ likes little white boys best.

I’ve gotta think that someone on the other end of the gwb43 emails is gonna spill their guts. And I can’t wait!

But we’ll never have Senator Aiken back.
Terry Olson @ 346
Nah, they’re all good soldiers at the RNC. But, somewhere, buried in some host’s basement, those emails are stored on a server that has no political affiliations whatsoever….
Evening folks… Long time no chat. Hi TRex. Good stuff. Nice to see you take it light and fun now and then.
Kinda like eating the goat staked to the feeding post like Jurassic Park. Have a snack and pick off the easy prey.
smapdi @ 343
There are many beautiful things that don’t bear contemplating how we get them.
And I’m sorry.

Depends upon the Achenbach.
(waving to Nate) How goes it, dude?
Aright gang. Time for this dino to hit the hay.
Too bad I can’t wear my new shoes to bed.
Good night!
Night TRex, thanks for the heads up on the Bjork.
Nite, TRex. You can put your new shoes near the bed so you can see them as you fall asleep.
I love House oversight. I love Waxman.

Sleep well everybody,
Good night.
g’nite patrick 4/4.
Suzanne @ 350
Sorry Suzanne. Got pulled away. Now gravity is pulling me to bed.
I’ll stop in and chat soon. Even when I don’t stop to comment, rare is the TRex post that I miss.
That’s it for me tonight, folks. G’nite all.
Good morning, firepups!
Anybody for some USA intrigue?
http://www.pressrelease365.com…..s-1275.htm
It is one convoluted press release, but damn if it don’t look like some funny coincidences piled up.
Richard Cohen sez: Fitz knew no crime had been committed, but went after Libby anyway
BK, did you see the previous thread? That story came up there, too. A blogger named Little Thom has been following the Medicare angle. littlethomsblog.blogspot.com I think. Not sure how the deaths tie in, but a lot of that story sounds like it will have legs, given the other USA matters that have come forward.
prostratedragon @ 363
Thanks. Missed that thread, but it did look like a great read. Just left a comment with the Muckraker’s thread on the DoJ investigator.
Weird. Tin-foilish in realtime, or something.
[edit: Yes. Legs, indeed. AUSA’s fired. THAT is noteworthy. Loyalty oaths on the replacements, perhaps? Plus, iirc, Cummins was covering some stuff in MO - where this case originates - before Rove’s man replaced him in AR.]
Good morning, pups. This morning in the NYT it’s Robert Wright on the United Nations and Nicholas Kristof about folks who risk their lives to vote in Pakistan.
http://mgpaquin.wordpress.com/
Coffee and tea are ready, and the biscuits just came out of the oven. Have a great day.
The NYT also has an op-ed by Gwen Ifill on Imus (who at one point called her a cleaning woman, though he now denies it).
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04…..ref=slogin
She rightly points out that he managed to take what should have been a thrilling, exciting moment for those young women was turned into the opposite by a racist, misogynistic moron.

Well, this guy will be “wanker of the day” for sure. How cluelessly offensive. He’s attacked every special/independent prosecutor ever merely because he can’t distinguish the politically motivated unprofessional jerks who went after Clinton from the professional apolitical Fitz. And if you can’t see that simple a distinction, you’ve got nothing to say as a columnist.
so now that we need a lot of professional apolitical prosecutors to deal with this lawless administration, Cohen says its all just criminalizing politics — straight WH spin, direct from Rove.
Oh, good morning all.
mornin’ all

IN DEFENSE OF IMUS / THE DEATH OF FREE SPEECH
IN DEFENSE OF IMUS / THE DEATH OF FREE SPEECH
One thing is certain, the “Rutgers Women’s Basketball Team” and the individual members are tougher than the hypocritical political opportunist(infectious invalidity?) who now dissect their latest victim in a “talabanistic” approach to censor speech. Imus did blunder, but intent is wholly misapplied, instead assigned by opportunist whose agenda is limit free speech under the guise of civility. The disgusting politically correct, victorian fundamentalist behavior control freaks of the world ascribe in this instance to words, the propensity to inflict harm and pain to people as abhorrent, unacceptable and grounds for termination.
But what is really abhorrent about the entire issue is that in the light of; “no Osama,” “cooked and fabricated,” prewar intelligence, the Iraq War, 3000 DEAD US SOLDIERS, 30,000 MAIMED US SOLDIERS 500,000 DEAD IRAQI CIVILIANS, 500 BILLION $$, to continue America’s addiction to fossil fuels, that we are even wasting our time on the ill choice of words, that broke no law and clearly would have been ignored by any player on this women’s team should it have been said by an opponent for it would serve only to distract and take the players eyes “off the ball,” during competition,if you know what I mean? Catch my drift!!! Oh yes and maybe by protesting against the Iraq war instead, you might reaffirm American values clearly absent in the slaughtering of Iraq.
Somehow, given the depth and severity of America’s dysfunction and denial concerning our corrupt political leaders, the aforementioned issues that are not just “words,” but are the result of flawed policies predicated on intentional deceptions presented as justification for “illegal and immoral actions,” destroying life with cold hard steel, the result of words……….. renders Imus’s issue a joke, as it was intended to be! By the way if you do not like his jokes, turn it off, you do not have tolisten and subject your thin-skinned personas to such asinine comments which assist in the stumbling evolution of society, enabled and protected by the rule of law and free speech. Kind of like “Bush and Cheney Should be “Impeached” for fabricating pre war intelligence to commandeer the US Military to invade Iraq in an attempt to grab the untapped crude of Al-Anbar from the Iraqis, for his oil pals. Meanwhile Americans and Iraqis are slaughtered and the price of gas at the pumps climbs 18 cents in a week. Oh, I’m sorry and I apologize if I offended anyone with the god’s honest truth. Congratulations to the Rutgers Lady “Hoopsters” for a great season, even in defeat. Imus, thanks for your stupid remark. It allowed me to make a point while exercising my civic duty, enabled by free speech!
Scarecrow @ 372
That WaPo’s standard line, the single-leaker theory. Once you know “the leaker” — note the use of the definite article — to be Amritage, a well-intentioned old blabbermouth, then you know that there has been no crime. End of story!
YJames Joyce @ 375

But that’s not what WE think. You must be a troll.
Morning raven, all.
raven, I don’t quite get what you’re saying, I think some of your comment got misplaced somewhere. And I really don’t get what JJ is saying. Sounds more like Faulkner to me.
Good morning, all.
What the Iraq protests of Monday looked like to the rest of the world not filtered by our MSM-
http://www.iraqslogger.com/index.php/post/2277
JJ@375
Where do I begin?
This isn’t a free speech issue;
He was free to call Gwen Ifill a “cleaning woman”
He was free to say one of his producers was “in charge of n-word jokes”
He was free to insult the Rutgers women’s basketball team.
He is now free to face the collective consequences of those acts.
STTP in Ohio @ 380
But that’s precisely a free speech issue. And he should face accountability. Consequences. But also, the consequences must be proportional.
And like Joel Hollander and Hamilton Jordan, I take the context of the whole man, and look around and wonder where were the voices will be speaking out about the racist response to Katrina, or wounded soldiers, or sick kids if we are dumbed down to just Matt Lauer and Katie Couric and Rush Limbaugh and Tucker Carlson and the rest.
And sidebar to David Gregory…Lester Holt, last time I looked, appears to be African-American.
What about the black children who were related to him?
STTP in Ohio @ 380
And there’s the little matter of Imus using CBS and MSNBC as the means. He was suspended not for free speech but for embarrassing his corporate employers, and at a time when the MSM is doing stories about the uncivil blogs, suggesting they need to clean up their acts to be taken seriously — and then Imus speaks in the same way he always does and gets caught in their hypocrisy.
JJ is right to call attention to all the other obscenities, but it doesn’t follow that Imus should be excused or that CBS and MSNBC are not responsible for what their stars say. Let them stew in it a while, and make it harder for Disney/ABC to justify Melanie Morgan and friends, etc, etc.
Clarence Page, on CNN, chiming in on Imus, admitting he has “enabled” Imus by going on his program. Lots of folks looking in the mirror this a.m.
have had the show on in background for an hour now and have yet to hear the voice of ‘Bernie’, his so called producer – anyone ?
Christy has a new thread up and ready.
cbl @ 384
They have got to be looking at his role. In my opinion, while Imus is responsible, McGuirk is the one who needs to be fired or silenced. Maybe this is what Imus is talking about when he says he’s going to serve the suspension and make his show a better program.
Now onto Cohen.
This article proves something I have long believed; these people need to get out of the beltway more often.
Seriously.
When lying in testimony before a grand jury is seen as no big deal your personal moral compass is waaaay off.
Great post Trex
Here is a little something that I may have missed in an earlier post here but I think it is worth bringing up in this context. Apparently it is now going to be OK to frivolously blow the whistle on anyone as long as you say they might be a terrorist. House votes to protect John Does I found this point particularly interesting:
(Emphasis added). We’re not out of the woods yet are we Dorothy?
