Yes, the crotch didn’t get sewn together until late in the nineteenth century. It’s very interesting to read how attitudes about underwear has changed over the years. At first, women wearing underpants were the racy ones! Pants were supposed to be only for the men.

Of course the women also all wore the corsets or stays and chemises and petticoats but underwear? How shocking!

In the midcentury when the women wore the very big hoops under their skirts, it was a common site for women to expose their bottom halves if a wind blew their skirts up or if they were followed upstairs.

Some very funny stories about Parisienne society women “innocently unaware” of all they exposed to the appreciative men following them as they went to opera. They were old fashioned girls and didn’t wear pantaloons. ;o)

I don’t recall the full segment all that well, but last week (and this week’s reruns) Colbert showed a quick clip of it again when talking about Rik’s wife being on Dancing with the Stars. Colbert asked Rik if there was anyone he’d like to put on notice, and he said “How about Todd Rungren?”, and so his name was placed on the board.

No. Later on they sewed the tubes together into a waistband, and down a few inches in front and back. Simplicity has a pattern (one of the ‘Martha McCain’ historicals) with open-leg drawers, for the re-enactors of 1860s events.

I can see recycling the lace. It was probably handmade, and worth real money.

Yup as Bknuckles said, crutchless! Those Victorians were as racy as their Regency and Georgian predecessors, they just didn’t blab about it…… They had different mores; for example, a Victorian lady might keep her ankles hidden and have skirts round the chair legs to keep them decent, but might have hwer tits nearly hanging out in her ball dresses and would say, even in mixed company, “I am going for a shit!” and then those lovely lacy crutchless pantaloons…….!
