Peter, Bjorn & John "Young Folks" |
A friend of mine has an all nude Judas Priest cover band, Nudist Priest. So this year, not surprisingly, they get called to play at the annual neighborhood LeatherFest in Silver Lake. LeatherFest is a street festival filled with mostly really built gay guys with big moustaches in all sorts of leather get ups. The Slave look, the Master look, the Bears, you know the drill.
Strangely, Nudist Priest gets the gig and the first thing they hear: NO NUDITY, privates must be covered. That's weird, of all the places right? I saw them a month ago at a rock club…stark naked! Why no nudity?? My friend, who is straight by the way, is incensed. He is going nude anyway. Lots of drama ensues.
Now I'm usually from the school of "Take It Off Anyway", but I must admit I was torn over this one. I mean I bet every leather guy there wanted to show his pierced pipe. This community has had to fight long and hard to wear their bare-assed chaps at a public street fair and no one wanted to see that get ruined by a straight boy.
Well, the band goes on, mostly clothed. …my friend stark naked. The stage manager is now holding up a sign to him, "Calling the Cops" as he sings "Hot Rockin". Finally, he does put on a rather thin piece of duct-tape over his privates.
Though the duct tape looked more obscene than the dangle, I was actually glad that he covered up. I would've felt really bad if the "straights" had spoiled the leather boys' party.
I love to hear The Spin You're In in the comments section.

Hi Donita!
Donita!
That LeatherFest sounds like a people watcher’s good time. I imagine its a bit like a gay version of a biker rally. I’ve been to/worked at plenty of those here in the Midwest, they’re always a fine time. Animal rights folks are in full freak out mode over this I’m sure, though.
The YouTube from above solves a minor mystery for me. I listen to the Sirius channel 35 that plays smooth electronica to go to sleep and that song has played a few times this week. Not wanting to open my eyes to learn who the artist was, until now I didn’t know who did the song with the cool whistled melody.

It was a blast hanging out actually. Strangely the headliner was The English Beat. Everyone was dancing their asses off.
I am a huge Priest fan.
Ever hear their live version of ‘Out in the Cold’?
I love that tune.
Could not find it on You Tube dammit.
PS.
I got my first speeding ticket doing 75 in a 40 listening to Breakin’ the Law at max volume.
Pricey little bit of fun that was.
*g*
Whatever happened to all the fun in the world?
;>)
TSII:
Fela Kuti/Ginger Baker – Ariwa
James Brown/Full Force – Godfather Runnin’ The Joint
Doug Sahm – In The Dark

Be careful with that James Brown/Full Force joint, it’ll hurt ya if you’re not careful! You got any link love for Doug Sahm? Im not familiar with him.
Bustednuckles @ 6
Their video for Hot Rockin’ is hilarious. Check it out.

Wow, is this like the year of the New Wave Tour? English Beat? Damn, I haven’t heard them in ages! Get The Cars back together and on the road and it’s 1983 all over again.
OT but, in re: TPM’s report that Bush’s voting rights section of Justice has been ignoring cases of african american disenfranchisement, the report states that they filed one case that concerned an african american, but seven cases concerning hispanics.
IMO, this is more of “The Math”.
What’s the difference between hispanics and african americans when it comes to voting? Oh, right, hispanics are far more likely to vote Republican.
Morning, you lovely people!
I need coffee, be back in a few…
Doug Sahm, and the Sir Douglas Quintet, bay-beh!
Adios Mexico
And if you get a chance to pick up The Return Of The Formerly Brothers (with Amos Garrett and Gene Taylor), well worth it, Fini.
Pfizer is outsourcing its animal lab testing to CHINA!!!

Get your buzz on girl.
Hi Ya Donita. Nice post. This talk of the Leatherfest makes me yearn to troubadour the streets Los Angeles. Sharing arpeggios, bonding over universal melodies. Harvesting all the love in the universe Ah Los Angeles, all that potential love. The huge magnitude of diversity. The best Mexican food on Earth. Gay people and their supporters by the thousands, oiled and glistening in the California sun. Singing songs of freedom in the streets holding hands.

Great video!. thx!
Fini FiniTOOBZ! @ 10
Yeah, and Thomas Dolby’s been out and around lately as well. The early 80s are back en force, apparently.
Mandrake @ 14
Oh man, I couldn’t even investigate that more. Burn in hell indeed.

They toured in ‘05 and a bit of ‘06 with Todd Rundgren in place of Rik. They went by the name of The New Cars.

Not so much anymore. Thanks Tom Tancredo.

Hence Rik Ocasek putting Todd “On Notice” on The Colbert Report last year.
There was a new thread — and Blip, it vanished!
hey, kiddies, i’ll tell you firepups a little story about the effect that male nudity has on donita. when L7 was opening for faith no more, their singer, mike patton, went onstage completely nude and, according to dee plakas, donita spent the whole night in the bathroom.
this counts as my birthday present to you, donita. hoist a jaeger for me!
Hey Donita!
Curious re: your post about management a few days (weeks?) ago. Did you ever get in touch with Elliot Roberts? The more I think about it the more I think you should.
darkblack @ 13
Great video, cool tune. My kind of stuff, I love that TexMex sound like that. His site has bad links all over it though, and I see he died in 1999. Tragic circumstances I’m sure, another good musician gone.
As luck would have it though, Napster has the complete album of The Return of the Formerly Brothers and it is downloading to my machine as we speak. Thanks for the recommend.
bdu @ 18
Yeah, I’ve been reading his blog for about a year now. I am a major fan of Mr. Dolby, he had a significant influence on me as a young keyboardist in the 80s.
Sound like it was a blast, as for nudity I could
take it oe leave it, and if its not pleasing to look at
I would definitely leave it. For those of you interested in
eco friendly cars, there is an eco auto show tomorrow
in Santa Monica on the 3rd street promenade by
wilshire. I think the hours are 12pm to 4 pm
If you live in LA check it out.
I like this Peter, Bijorn and John record. Just bought the whole album on I-Tunes.
Sounds like good time, hot men and good music.

The English Beat! they opened for The Police on the ‘84 tour. i had no idea they were even still around ……. (they probably had no idea i’m still around.)
Morris Sheppard @ 26
Hey Morris! Thanks so much, yes Elliot is on my “to contact” list as soon as my mastering is finished.
bdu @ 24
In case you guys missed it (and HEY it’s TOTALLY ON-TOPIC here!) – bdu and I had fun the other night with Bill O’LIELLEEY… I believe it went something like this:
Ba-da-bing!
For some reason I couldn’t find Peter, Bjorn and John when I searched Napster for links to the songs in the playlist before, but I just now found them on there. Here are the missing Napster links for their playlist entries:

Listen to Let’s Call It Off [Single Version]
Donita, that story is fuckin’ hilarious, almost as good as Dread Zeppelin.
Sirius 22 First Wave is all about the 80’s and English Beat gets quite a bit of airtime.
I had no idea The Cars went touring with Todd Rundgren, what the hell was I doing? I would have slayed half my family for tickets to see that lineup! Oy!
I saw Todd Rundgren open up for the Tubes at Radio City in 1985. Was underwhelmed, as I was when Primus opened up for Rush.
Fini FiniTOOBZ! @ 28
Have you caught one of his recent tours? Pretty good stuff, he’s playing a lot of his older material, and a lot of it live via looping all by himself.
I think he was a catalyst for getting a lot of folks into synthesizers, something about those odd JP4 arpeggios on Golden Age of Wireless really sticks in one’s head.
Twisted Martini @ 35
I listen to three channels on Sirius, Ch 35 – Chill, Ch 22 – First Wave and the new Ch 29 – Punk. First Wave is what I listen to the most, I love their playlist. It’s all the great stuff from the 80s with none of the hair bands and inane pop.
Donita Sparks @ 19
Sorry to be a downer on an otherwise upbeat thread! Just had to get that information out. You obviously know enough to not want to take a look. I know how you feel!
The English Beat! they opened for The Police on the ‘84 tour. i had no idea they were even still around ……. (they probably had no idea i’m still around.)
English Beat tours somewhat regularly around here (SoCal), but it’s really only Dave Wakeling, i.e. no Ranking Roger and no Saxa. They played a little club in Grover Beach, CA a couple months ago and it was *yawn* sadly kinda boring.
Donita!
I was away last week, but wanted to say that the History lessons thread brought back some great memories. Years ago I was an exchange student in Germany, and Dschinghis Khan and ABBA seem to have fought it out for the top of the charts the whole time I was there. Just seeing those names in the post reminded me of that whole time — my exchange family, all the old friends I haven’t thought of in years, the pubs and hangouts, and everything else. Thanks!
But talk about extremes: from disco last week to duct tape this week! The clothes of old may hurt to look at, but taking off that duct tape . . . that’s got to hurt!
Donita Sparks @ 32
Great. If you need a good word, or whatever, let me know.
bdu @

Ocasek put Todd “On Notice”? That is hilarious. More details please. I couldn’t find it on YouTube
bdu @ 38
I haven’t been able to see him recently because he has not come to Indy (big f’n surprise there). I was already knee deep into synthesizers and electronic music when Golden Age came out but it did have a major impact on me. As did everything he released after that.
I have heard some of his new material on his site though and I would love to hear him live. I might have to lean on my friend that books for one of the large clubs here to bring him to town.
It’s the fight of the 21st Century! OCASEK vs RUNDGREN! LIVE! On HBO Boxing After Dark!
Fini – YGM.
Donita – good, warm loving vibes comin’ your way.
I couldnt find the Daily Show/Ocasek clip either, but I did find this New Cars version of Drive. Very cool!
Jacqrat @ 47
Back atcha!
Peterr @ 42
Thanks Peterr. I’m really glad that you liked History Lessons. I’m a sucker fot that kind of music.

Here’s a couple of better links:
One and two.

‘Giants in those days’
Peterr makes an excellent point, did your friend have any, uhhh, complications from the removal of said duct tape? I mean, damn that had to hurt taking off! Why didn’t he just pull a Red Hot Chili Peppers maneuver and put a sock on it?
Fini FiniTOOBZ! @ 53
I don’t know, I really didn’t want any more info. I think that he was pretty drunky-poo by the time the tape removal went down.
Fini FiniTOOBZ! @ 53
Also, duct tape rocks more than socks. More stark, you know?
Well, this is an underwear comment rather than a music one but I think it fits on this thread, since you mention sans culotte.
I read in a book on the history of underwear (and yes I read such things ;o) about when women’s underpants first came into fashion in the early nineteenth century.
They were essentially two separate long tubes tied at the waist. Sometimes one became untied and fell down the leg. A lady had to learn how to gracefully step out of the offending piece and walk away without acknowledging what had happened.
There was a funny period diary entry of some woman recognizing the lace from one such accident reappearing on another woman’s neck.
It made me laugh to think about someone scavenging on the street and “recycling”. I know the poor were champions at this, but the upper crust? Hilarious.
Donita Sparks @ 54
I totally understand your position in not wanting any more info than necessary in this situation. A classic TMI scenario if there ever was one. And I would assume the aforementioned “drunky-poo” condition was in effect before, during and after the on stage incident even transpired, otherwise he’s an insane man for going onstage naked willingly. People have nightmares about that you know!
I will agree that duct tape rocks more than socks, unless of course your socks have been rocked off of you, in which case the socks rock more I think. Maybe. Or something.
Bionic @ 56
What do you mean “reappearing on another woman’s neck”?
Well, ladies wore lace ‘filets’ round their necks, and the lon pantaloons tended to have lots of lovely lace round the bottom………..
Fini FiniTOOBZ! @ 57
I think he gets a litlle courage in a bottle before taking the stage. I should’ve included one of the photos I took at the gig. Maybe next week I can post it.
maunga @ 60
OK, please explain “two long tubes”… no crotch?
By the way, my spin this week has been centered around the hilarious Alanis Morisette parody of My Humps. I’ve also been listening to Howard Jones’ old tune No One Is To Blame since hearing it again on Sirius the other day. Lots of other obscure 80s stuff too. I’ve been in a New Wave mood lately.
Donita Sparks @ 60
What? Never heard of Victorias Secret?
Well, there ya go!
Did somebody say Toobz?
Fini FiniTOOBZ! @ 65
Ha!
Donita Sparks @
62
Yup as Bknuckles said, crutchless! Those Victorians were as racy as their Regency and Georgian predecessors, they just didn’t blab about it…… They had different mores; for example, a Victorian lady might keep her ankles hidden and have skirts round the chair legs to keep them decent, but might have hwer tits nearly hanging out in her ball dresses and would say, even in mixed company, “I am going for a shit!” and then those lovely lacy crutchless pantaloons…….!
Donita @ 62
No. Later on they sewed the tubes together into a waistband, and down a few inches in front and back. Simplicity has a pattern (one of the ‘Martha McCain’ historicals) with open-leg drawers, for the re-enactors of 1860s events.
I can see recycling the lace. It was probably handmade, and worth real money.
Where else but here would a discussion in one thread run the gamut from French pop tunes to 80s New Wave to animal testing in China to Victorian underwear? I love this place!
BTW Jane has a fresh thread upstairs and I must be running along to clean the homestead. See you all later!
Donita Sparks @ 45
I don’t recall the full segment all that well, but last week (and this week’s reruns) Colbert showed a quick clip of it again when talking about Rik’s wife being on Dancing with the Stars. Colbert asked Rik if there was anyone he’d like to put on notice, and he said “How about Todd Rungren?”, and so his name was placed on the board.
That song is pretty great actually.
Donita Sparks @ 62
Sorry, got called away.
Yes, the crotch didn’t get sewn together until late in the nineteenth century. It’s very interesting to read how attitudes about underwear has changed over the years. At first, women wearing underpants were the racy ones! Pants were supposed to be only for the men.
Of course the women also all wore the corsets or stays and chemises and petticoats but underwear? How shocking!
In the midcentury when the women wore the very big hoops under their skirts, it was a common site for women to expose their bottom halves if a wind blew their skirts up or if they were followed upstairs.
Some very funny stories about Parisienne society women “innocently unaware” of all they exposed to the appreciative men following them as they went to opera. They were old fashioned girls and didn’t wear pantaloons. ;o)
Because a gay man is being discriminated against unless he can wear assless leather pants, without which gayness is impossible.
