Via today's Froomkin and U.S. News, I find this Jay Leno gem:
Jay Leno: President Bush "went on vacation to his ranch in Texas for what the White House said was a short weekend break. You know, aren't we at war? Anybody else's weekend start on Wednesday? Try that at your job: 'Boss, I'd like to take the weekend off. I'll be leaving Tuesday night.'"
It's not like he's got anything better to do, I suppose.
Back in August of 2005, he had already set the record of most vacation days while in office – 319 at that point, not counting before and after Katrina hit – surpassing even The Gipper's hefty vacation total. And he's still going strong on vacationing. What a role model for America's youth, eh?
(I tried to find a clip of the SNL sketch from the Presidential debates where you get the "It's haaaaard work." Came up empty. If anyone can find me a link, I'd love it.)

EPU’d – John Edwards will not participate in the CBC Fox debate.

I wouldn’t think so. Kyle Sampson testified. Yes he volunteered, but presumably the committee would have subpoenaed him anyway.
Bush is going down in history as the worst President….ever and also the most vacationing President… ever.
The words lazy and incompetent flash in my mind.
Of course KKKarl is still weaseling around somewhere looking for ways to further his agenda.

Considering that Preznit Pissypants continues to make disastrous recess appointments, would it be possible to not recess congress? Just keep it going even if lots of folks aren’t around?

BREAKING FROM THE AP:
Monica Goodling has resigned from her position at the DoJ.
Here’s the statement of the Edwards campaign – good for them.
“We just called the CBC to let them know that we’re looking forward to their January debate with CNN but we’re not going to participate in the proposed debate with Fox. The CBC champions critical issues that matter enormously to the future of our country, and we look forward to discussing them throughout this campaign and at their debate in January. But we believe there’s just no reason for Democrats to give Fox a platform to advance the right-wing agenda while pretending they’re objective. If there was any uncertainty as to Fox’s objectivity, it was put to rest when they attacked Democratic candidates, Democratic constituency groups, and the Nevada Democratic party when their last proposed debate was cancelled for lack of support.”
http://electioncentral.tpmcafe…..cbc_debate
Oh, I see I’m late to the party on Goodling’s resignation.
I am John D’Oh!
Hey, did Monica Goodling resign today?
Nice that George has some time to cut brush and play cowboy. I wonder if he spends one moment of his blissful long weekend thinking about how he has sent our soliders are going back for second, third, fourth, fifth deployments without the proper rest time. I wonder if he spends any seconds thinking about how he sends these young men and women to fight his battles without proper body armor.
Oh, I’m sure he and Pickles wouldn’t want to worry their little heads about that. Just pass the ham and pretend everything is going swimmingly in the ever improving nation of Iraq.

Better cash that check now dude.
Russ Feingold, on Countdown earlier this week, laughed at the President’s reference to Congress’ home-work-period as “spring break.” He made a great segue to his townhall meetings this week where his Wisconsin constituents are asking, “When will Congress get us out of Iraq?” Russ made the point quite clearly that while the President’s vacation is a vacation, Congress is busy during “spring break.”
Hope everyone is having a peaceful Good Friday — especially the Iranian people.
The Goodling resignation is a great PR benefit to our side. Her name will be all over the news, pushing out the ridiculous Pelosi story.
There’s a reason she resigned on a Friday night!

Raven – there seems to have been a thought by some other participant in the last thread (Egregious ?) not sure who, that there was some disagreement. For my part, I certainly did not feel that, I was in agreement with what you were saying all the way as far as I am concerned.
Via HuffPo (E&P):

As for Monica -
She doesn’t deserve a penny from the Treasury, but her resignation may just be Rovian strategy.
With the DOJ gig over, Monica can stiff the committee, take the 5th, charge the Capitol in a bulldozer….
Effectively all* the things she was doing anyway.
Wingnut welfare will pay her for some non-job – and keep paying her lawyers.

landofthefree @ 48
He’ll resign when his test prep crew discovers he cannot say ‘I don’t recall’ without soiling his pants.
Don’t you think that she resigned at least in part so that she could freely take money, gifts, etc., to pay for her attorney fees? I wonder what her chances are to actually just not show up for testimony. Can she actually just sit back and say that she did nothing wrong, but the atmosphere for the hearings is so poisoned that she has reason to believe if she testifies, it will open her up to criminal charges? Any of you lawyer types want to take a bite on that?
P J Evans @ 38

Here’s a YouTube link to a short clip of Bush repeating his “hard work” mantra in the first debate with Kerry.
This wasn’t so much EPU’d as drowned out in the middle of the last thread, and I really think it bears wide attention:
John McCain actually said, “I disagree with what the majority of the American people want,” in regard to getting out of Iraq.
In a democracy, should that mean game, set, and match?

Assuming she does have an actual crime in mind (and not just “I refuse to testify because the Democrats are going to be mean to me”), the two top contenders among the commenters here and at TPM seem to be:
- Encouraging others to lie to Congress
- Administering Republican loyalty oaths to Assistant US Attorney candidates (and possibly other federal employees.)

Speaking of encouraging people to lie to Congress, I’ve been wondering about Gonzo’s test prep organization. Who is coaching him, i.e., his personal lawyers or people who can be subpoenaed to testify about what went on in the sessions? And yes, although IANAL, I am aware that, as officers of the court layers cannot knowingly encourage perjury, but I don’t think this crew gives a ff about that.

Contestant: “Yeah.”
Judge: “You should ask for your money back.”
Maybe Monica Goodling should ask her law school for her money back for teaching her such nonsense as has landed her in this spot.
What might she have done?
It’s hard to say in this administration there were so many crimes she could’ve been involved in. But, of course, the big money is on her involvement with the politicized firing of US Attorneys.
On Bush:
Bush going on vacation? Does this mean we’re about to be attacked again? We already know we’re not safe even when he’s away from DC.
On a completely different topic, 9/11:

April 6-8, 2007 — The CIA’s Counter-Proliferation Division (CPD) and British intelligence have evidence that then-Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney lost three nuclear weapons in 1991. That’s just crap. Our arsenal is plutonium-, not uranium-based. There is no way anything from our arsenal could possibly be mistaken for something the Iraqis might have constructed themselves, even if they had the capacity to enrich uranium to weapons grade.

DISGUSTING!
Bush bypasses Congress on envoy pick
President Bush bypassed Congress to name Jewish philanthropist Sam Fox as U.S. ambassador to Belgium.
Bush nominated Fox, 77, of St. Louis, earlier this year, but Democrats protested because Fox had donated $50,000 to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, a group that claimed during the 2004 presidential elections that Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) had exaggerated his Vietnam War heroics. Fox also led a fund-raising campaign to pay for the recent legal defense of Lewis 밪cooter?Libby, a former top aide to Vice President Dick Cheney.
Bush last week withdrew his nomination of Fox, former head of the Republican Jewish Coalition, when it became clear that he could not muster enough votes in the Senate for approval. But he appointed Fox as ambassador Wednesday while Congress was on spring recess, The New York Times reported. Under terms of the recess appointment, Fox can remain ambassador until the end of Congress?next session.
밫his is really now taking the recess appointment vehicle and abusing this beyond anyone’s imagination,” Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.), a candidate for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination, told the Times. ”This is a travesty.”
Are they on vacation or formally in Recess?
From Andrew Cohen’s Bench Conference in WaPo:
Gonzo Works For Himself
ralphbon @ 124
The story is much more complicated than that, as is the case with all Wayne Madsen stories. The lost nukes (in all that follows consider to have an alledgedly before every word) were being transported from S. Africa, during their nuclear decommissioning, when the U.S. plane went into the drink near Somalia, jettisoning them & 3 crew, while the other 3 crew went down in the plane. They were in fact plutonium warheads. Recovery by someone who hangs out with Mugabe, get into black market, end up in DPRK, or words to that effect. You now know why I adore Wayne Madsen. Every paragraph is better than 3 spy thrillers rolled into one.
Don’t know how Cheney was (allegedly) going to finesse the plutonium/uranium yellowcake glitch in his (allegedly) complicated coverup. Throw sand in our eyes I suppose. Or whatever.
Funny thing is, I do have some vague memory of a U.S. military jet going down near Somalia. I didn’t try to google it, but perhaps now’s the time. The essentail ingredient of a conspiracy is to have an element or two of the story be traceable.

My understanding is that several members of congress have written the watchdog government accountability office to clarify the legality of Sam Fox’s appointment and to explore whether Congress has the authority to retroactively revoke it. http://www.allheadlinenews.com/articles/7006969821
Foxnews also ran something last night to the effect that Sam Fox will serve without pay to avoid giving Congress any fiscal levers over his appointment… apparently, Senator Dodd says this too is illegal.
What took Feinstein so long to step down? She should be investigated along with anyone else who profits from this illegal and immoral war.
Senator Feinstein’s War Profiteering
Democratic Blood Money
By JOSHUA FRANK
04/05/07 “ICH” – - — – Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein of California silently resigned from her post on the Military Construction Appropriations subcommittee (MILCON) late last week as her ethical limbo with war contracts began to surface in the media, including an excellent investigative report written by Peter Byrne for Metro in January. MILCON has supervised the appropriations of billions of dollars in reconstruction contracts since the Bush wars began.
Feinstein, who served as chairperson and ranking member for the committee from 2001-2005, came under fire early last year in these pages for profiting by way of her husband Richard Blum who held large stakes in two defense contracting companies. Both businesses, URS and Perini, have scored lucrative contracts in Iraq and Afghanistan in the last four years, and Blum has personally pocketed tens of millions of dollars off the deals his wife, along with her colleagues, so graciously approved.

ralphbon @ 124
Umm, not true. We’ve used HEU in weapons off and on for many years after the `50s. The Mk. 53, for example, was all-uranium and was in the permanent stockpile until about 1997. The W-87 and W-88 use both plutonium in the primary and HEU in the secondary.
There are other examples retired after 1991.
Does that mean Madsen is right? Certainly not. He’s often been wrong on a host of different issues.
Blub @ 138
Sam Fox wants to watch the hen house without pay. Must be other really good benefits.
Madsen’s got a reprt on this. He says Belgium doesn’t want the Fox. Sam Fox is linked to the Lik*d Party.

Short version:
You can’t do a job for no pay, if it’s a fixed pay job.
Ambassador is a fixed pay job.
Therefore, Fox can’t legally do it for nothing, either.
Christy – The clip from SNL that I have been looking for for years is not of the debates. It is prior to the 2000 election and it was a compilation of showing what life would be like depending on which candidate won.
I don’t know who wrote the script, but it had Will Ferrel as W and it started out with him under his desk and the off camera people coaxing him out – and he was saying, “it’s too hard”….
When he finally comes out he pulls down a map of the US (a la 5th grade) and says things like “Texas seceded to Mexico” and “the Great Lakes are burning and even I know that’s not right”
Whoever wrote it was a genius. Anyone got any pull with Lorne Michaels or Tina Fey to get it released?
The funniest part of this whole Sam Fox fiasco is, why? Why would the preznit want to court even more congressional outrage than he absolutely has to, over something that he could very well lose in the end? I guess he really owe Fox that big of a debt for his shiteboating skills.. so does this mean that a presidency can be bought for a mere ambassadorship?

Thanks for asking. Was on a prior thread, who knows where, & I’ve deleted it from my email file. It had to do with govt making employers enforce illegal alien laws & I said that was another govt mandate passed along without the tools for doing it, like secure ID cards, & BTW, last I looked it was the govt’s job to enforce laws, not business’ job, or words to that effect.
As for the substance, I have a friend with a mfg business almost on the Canadian border in VT & he educated me as to what a nightmare this would be without proper ID cards. Also, the govt knows where the bulk of the illegals work, and it is probably at companies that give big political contributions. So those companies don’t get raided. (Can you say Wal-mart.) Any time a company gets raided for illegals, you can be sure there’s a hidden agenda.

Or 6/5 years.
Have you seen the Wal-mart spy story? I don’t remember seeing anything on it. In case you didn’t, here it is:

So here’s what I’ve been wondering about Rove’s grand scheme for a permanent R majority. USAs like Biskupic spend their time hounding Ds up for election, yet Ds win anyway. Dontcha think that with the personnel resources at Rove’s command, there might be a better way to work for R dominancy? In economists’ words, there’s an opportunity cost to these kinds of schenanigans, as well as the real actual cost they are now paying in public exposure.
Yes Noam! Tell the truth about the I/P conflict. This is a must watch video!

Does this mean W is our most vacant President?

You’re correct; I should have qualified.
However, the MK-53 was a 9-megaton thermonuclear city buster that we would have had no possible reason to take out for a spin. Your other examples still rely on plutonium primaries. Besides, the jump from nuclear to thermonuclear is a massive technological leap, requiring orders of magnitude greater technological sophistication and resources than needed for Iraq just to make a garden-variety A-bomb.

Maybe good fiction, but he claims to be a reporter….
Here’s what happened to the SA bombs.
Cheers.

There’s teaching– and then there’s learning. Two different things.

Here’s a SNL “Style” Bush vs Kerry debate.
Isn’t it actually better that he’s taking time off? Maybe he should stretch this weekend into 22 months or so.
Check out this interview with Galloway about the invasion of Lebanon.
