Unless I’m mistaken, Bush’s ugly little tantrum at the Caterpillar plant came after a backfired photo op, in which the residents of a local diner did not greet the Boy Prince with any of the ass-kissing he’s apparently come to consider nothing less than his just right and due.

It looks like the same situation at play here: A “safe” audience doesn’t respond as he expects and so his Inner Sociopath comes out to play. And it’s not even like the soldiers were heckling him, fer Chrissakes. They just weren’t as fawning as he’d prefer. What a fragile little creep.

“nutshell” - you can put the heavy emphasis on “shell”. Works just as well.

I am a Vietnam veteran and know that my old unit the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment is training soldiers going to Iraq at Ft. Irwin. If they are going through Ft. Irwin then they are probably getting good training. One or two of the 11th’s 3 Squadrons has recently returned from Iraq and are passing on their experience to those going over.

As an aside, one of the 11th’s past commanders in Vietnam was George Patton Jr.

Having said that…I have a great distaste for the draft dodger who is using these troops as props. Goes to show the great depths of hypocrisy that this mutant will strive to attain…a true definition of a scumbag…

“What was evident this time around was the deafening silence that met the pauses for applause in his speech.”

That’s because they could smell the Scotch on his breath.

You can’t have a beer with GW any more…because he’s on to harder stuff.

Watertiger, I should point out that “Cassandra” wasn’t someone who predicted doom and destruction, but instead was someone who could actually see the future but was doomed to be disbelieved. A fitting name for the many of us who predicted the Iraq fiasco.

I’m sure that Bush is clearing brush so as to find the psilocybin mushrooms that grown on the cowpiles left behind when it was a working ranch. Why else would a Connecticut Yankee Drug Store Cowboy wannabe buy a non–working ranch far from the middle of Bumfuck, Texas? I’m sure Laura brews a fierce non-alcoholic psillocybin tea. You can be sure they call it Turdblossom Tea.

What’s a sanjaya?

Jane, I suspect you don’t watch “American Idol” or use google a lot.

Here is my most likely suspect: Sanjay.

But the name is an old one in Hindu mythology. Here is Definitions of SANJAYA on the Web. The name is apparently rather a common male name in India.

Those are my two best guesses.

Calling people by their last names is particularly crass, and a trademark of prep/boarding-school types. I always thought it was a way to distance and objectify others, and I’m still put off by it, many decades later. I know they do it in the military, police departments and on sports teams, but not in the workplace, and not many other places in society.

It’s done in academic citation all the time. But, I grant you, I wouldn’t want it in a workplace.

It’s standard practice in the military where name tags only show the last name and you meet and work with a lot of people.

I was in a Reserve unit for 15 years with a lot of people I knew rather well, and still never knew many of their first names. Then there is the habit the military has of demanding use of first name, middle initial and last name. I don’t use my first name socially, for banking, or at civilian work. I go by my middle name, so if anyone saw documents and got my first name from it, I always knew they were someone who knew me from the military.
