Bush's week just gets worse and worse.  The Democrats won't play nice and give him his war money with no strings attached, Dowdo and Goldilocks (all Bush nicknames have been simulated) have turned traitor, that noodge Waxman is sniffing around the RNC mailserver with the megasuperawesome domain name, and now Iran is trying to take his shiny new war away before he can even play with it:

Iran's president said Wednesday that the country had “pardoned” and would release the 15 British sailors and marines who have been held there for nearly two weeks.

(...)

“They are free after this meeting and can go back to their families,” he said at a news conference in Tehran. The 15 Britons will be handed over to the British embassy in Tehran on Thursday, Iranian news agencies reported.

Well, crap.  Not only does that remove a potential pretext, but it also adds Iran to the ever-growing list of Countries That Treat Their Prisoners Better Than We Do.  Dick makes a heroic effort to salvage the situation, but I don't think it's going to be enough:

The U.S. cautiously welcomed Iran's announcement that it was releasing 15 British soldiers and sailors, though Vice President Dick Cheney said, ''It was unfortunate that they were ever taken in the first place.''

(...)

''There's considerable evidence that they were, in fact, in Iraqi territorial waters when this happened,'' Cheney said Wednesday in an interview with ABC News, referring to Britain's denial of Iranian claims that the crew had entered Iranian waters and thus were taken legitimately.

''And so it's one of those events that should not have happened,'' he added. ''I think the Iranians were wrong to capture the sailors and it's good now that they have been released.''

(...)

Cheney said he didn't know if those developments or others meant there had been any quid pro quo to secure the captives' release.

''I don't think there should have been,'' he said, echoing Bush's repeated statements. ''It's important that if you get into the business where you reward that kind of behavior, there'll be more of that kind of behavior.''

Cool!  He just called the Iranians liars and terrorists!  Well played, Mr. C, well played.  But as the old schoolyard rhyme goes, "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never provide sufficient rationale for a one-sided thermonuclear engagement."

Sorry guys.  I'm afraid you're just going to have to go back to Dubya's original plan to stick a firecracker up Ahmadinejad's ass.  Maybe you could put a UN logo on it or something.

Oh, and before I forget, I have a quick question on Iraq.  Which is worse: the President who admits defeat, or the one who gift-wraps it?  (Why yes, I am assuming that they're two different people - very astute of you to notice)
