John Quiggin over at Crooked Timber has an interesting post about the construction of a wingnut parallel universe at the "Conservapedia" ("We do not allow liberal censorship of conservative facts.") The articles of faith are now so sprawling, so phasmantagorical that their codification has become infinitely complex and it requires more than simple faith to sustain them:
All of this, and the continuing sales of the Left Behind series, lead me to wonder if this construction effort will actually be successful. Maybe with sufficient will, the wished-for universe will be brought into existence, and the entire Bush support base raptured into it.
Of course, this rather tenuous relationship with consensus reality might strike some cynics as having all the hallmarks of a big fat pill habit.
Which brings us to OxyLimbaugh:
RUSH: But not only that, (former Republican congressman) Duke Cunningham is in jail. Patrick Fitzgerald was not fired! All of these allegations that these attorneys were fired because they're working on corruption cases against Republicans? Carol Lam was a campaign manager! These people would normally be made ambassadors, but Clinton put her in as a US attorney. This is the kind of people that Clintons and Democrats appoint as federal judges. What I was talking about earlier, is their attempt here to insulate Democrats and liberals from election results. Now, Bush could have gotten rid of this woman when he took office. He chose not to. The new tone, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Next up, Russert says, "Senator Leahy, let me ask about a comment Senator Hatch made. Do you have any shred of evidence that any case was interfered with by the dismissal these eight US attorneys?
Carol Lam, according to the communist-infested Wikipedia, was sworn in as US Attorney in 2002, when most conscious individuals acknowledge Bill Clinton was not in fact President.
They may need more than just a wing and a prayer to keep this pig afloat.

The sooner they get raptured, the better. I say bring it on, so we can return to reality.
In a way, there is a certain to be joy found in schadenfreude.

A wingnut and a prayer?
I can’t stand looking at fat ass let alone listening to what his drug induced ramblings spout on a daily basis.
When these pigs float, I see a flotilla into the sunset in the Bermuda triangle.
The Conservapedia is becoming some twisted form of the Books of Bokonon. I wouldn’t be surprised if these foma becomes a real religion some day, the wingnuts sure have that need-to-follow-a-cult mindset.

Hi Jane!
Bet Keith will have something to say about this.
Comedian Rust Limpballs truly is an idiot. But so are most all of the ditto heads who actually believe his gibberish.
I’m somewhat reminded of the line from “Field of Dreams”: Build it and he will come. Paraphrased for the reich wingers: Say it and it might come true (in an alternate universe – please go there and leave us the h*ll alone).
Thank You (stepping down off soapbox now).
Nolo @ 9
What you said. Where have I heard it’s all Bill Clinton’s fault before? Do you think they will blame this on Bill as well? ;)
Why is it all OK when Clinton did it too? They hated everything he did when he was President?
Doesn’t anybody remember that America was paradise under Bill Clinton? The stock market was up up up, even with all those supposed tax increases. There weren’t any terror alerts or even terror. There wasn’t any war in Iraq -wtf is that about? I remember those times as great times. Bush and Cheney got in there and ruined it all.

Thanks Jane. Hope you and your foot are well. Every post is a treat!
Limbaugh doesn’t specifically state it, but that insane talking point actually comes from Hatch on MtP. Orrin Hatch, a US Senator, declared to Russert that Lam was Southern California campaign manager for Clinton. It’s batshit insane, but Timmeh didn’t even ask him about it.
I was wondering how long it would be before it started showing up as a talking point in wingnut-land. I guess now we know.

Link to Meet the Press transcript where Hatch goes completely insane on the subject of Carol Lam. He also claimed she was a law professor with no prosecutorial experience, when in fact she was a career prosecutor with more than fifteen years experience as an Assistant USAtty before being appointed.

Ruse Limpy looks like he puked in his mouth in that photo. Probably is his everymorning expression when he looks in the mirror and realizes it’s him he is, thinking “Shit, it wasn’t just a nightmare.”
What is often not mentioned, is that any wingnut that believes in Bush will be instantly raptured — straight to Hell . . .
Bush being the either the Anti-Christ, or the sockpuppet of the Anti-Christ.
Commenting about Limpballs and his wierd companions in an alternate universe and the disgusting way in which they try to interact with society is just too far out for me. I would much rather focus on how smoothly the newly formed Pastafarians have integrated into our society and are helping to make it a better place right here in this universe.
Wingnuts have a Fixed World View and they fix the facts and moral values to maintain their world view.
Liberals/Progressives/Democrats use confirmed facts to create their world view which means that their world view will adjust to the ever changing facts on the ground AND maintain their morals as the basis(frame) of their world view.
That is the difference. That is why these wingnuts are so repugnant.
So does Conservapedia have an article on the Flying Spaghetti Monster? Conversely, with its amorphous sprawling nature is it an incarnation of the FSM?

Speaking of wingnut media figures. I turned off Lou Dobbs in disgust a minute ago. Dobbs started to talk about the “wider” implications of the pet food poisonings. He started to say something like the pet food comes from “Communist China.” That’s not the only time I heard him or someone else on CNN preface China with Communist. Jeebus! The correct designation is “Mainland China.” I think Dobbs must be a total wingnut. If anything it’s pure capitolist money-grubbing ethos, that makes one sloppy with the pesticides. HEADLINE: Designated U.S. attorney to be sworn in; Appointee Lam awaits confirmation by Senate
BYLINE: Marisa Taylor; STAFF WRITER
BODY:
San Diego and Imperial counties are expected to get a new U.S. attorney starting Wednesday.
Carol Lam is scheduled to be sworn in Tuesday as interim U.S. attorney by San Diego’s federal court for an appointment that would take effect the next morning.
Patrick O’Toole, who was sworn in to fill the same position more than a year ago, said he is voluntarily resigning to allow Lam to take over the office even though the U.S. Senate hasn’t confirmed her nomination. President Bush nominated her the day before the Senate broke for summer recess, and although Congress returns this week, her confirmation could drag out.
“Since Carol has been nominated by the president, I felt it would be better for everyone to act on it with certainty rather than waiting,” O’Toole said.
Lam, a Superior Court judge in Vista, will become the first Asian-American U.S. attorney in San Diego.
Lam, 43, was a federal prosecutor for 14 years in San Diego before her appointment to the state bench.
She worked on white-collar crime cases as a prosecutor. She helped prosecute Chris Petti, a San Diego racketeer convicted in 1990 in a money-laundering scheme. The case also resulted in the felony conviction of financier Richard Silberman, married at the time to county Supervisor Susan Golding.
Lam also prosecuted large-scale Medicare fraud cases before being appointed judge in November 2000.
Lam refused to comment on the impending appointment.
O’Toole, a prosecutor in the San Diego office for 20 years, said he would remain in the office to help with the transition.

Many will recall that on July 8, 1947, witnesses claimed that a UFO with 5 aliens crashed onto asheep & cattle ranch just outside Rosell, NM. This is a well known incident that many say has long been covered up by the US Air Force & US Government.
However, what you may NOT know is that in the month of March, 1948 exactly nine months after that historic day George W Bush, Dick Cheney, Don Rumsfeld, Bill O’Reilly, Rush Limbaugh, Condi Rice, Albert Gonzales, John Bolton & Dan Quayle were all born.

I’m sure that everyone noticed this odd pairing apart from the false statements about Lam.
Not a shred of evidence Hatch says? When Sampson was asked about his email -we’ve got a Lam problem- the day after word went to the DoJ from Lam about extending her investigation, Sampson gave an entirely tangential response. Then there was some weird interruption or crosstalk and it wasn’t followed up. It still burns me that no one nailed him down hard on it but there should be (better be!) more opportunities to get to the heart of the matter.

There is a great post on The Carpetbagger Report from a few days ago about the mainstream media’s (specifically Time magazine’s) ignoring the prosecutor purge scandal.
http://www.thecarpetbaggerrepo…..10367.html
What explains the failure of the mainstream media to cover the purge scandal for so long, and so many other scandals? Do you think somebody just set up newspaper editors to cheat on their wives, and threatened to tell if the editors wouldn’t play ball when they come back some day and ask for something?
It wouldn’t be that hard to do, when you think about it. People wouldn’t talk about it.

blackwater building training camp in calif. brings jobs to rural community!

“Townspeople and environmentalists are squaring off against the company and public officials. The Portrero Planning Group approved the facility by a 7-0 vote in December – but since then more than half of the town’s registered voters have signed a petition opposing the facility. Residents also say they are organizing a recall against members of the Planning Group who voted in favor.
Chairman of the Planning Group Gordon Hammers says he won’t reconsider the board’s decision.
“I think it’s good for the community,” he said in a recent interview with the East County Californian. “It provides jobs.”
“It will improve the general economy of the community and as a result, improve property values,” he added. Hammers contended that arguments against the project “have absolutely no rhyme or reason” and that some opposition is based on misunderstanding of the project’s scope. “

What the conservapedia reminds me of so far is the kind of encyclopedia created in the USSR in the mid-1930s for elementary school students. Reading their entry for the Council of Nicaea, it is like an elementary or middle school article. Compare it to the wikipedia entry on the same subject.
John Quiggin’s observation, cited above by Jane, that:
Maybe with sufficient will, the wished-for universe will be brought into existence, and the entire Bush support base raptured into it.,
seems to be eerily resonating in part of the conservapedia council of Nicaea article, by this comment there:
The Council ultimately decided that Jesus was the Son of God, by one vote.
Conservapedia couldn’t have been more outrageously humorous had Vonnegut created it.

Today’s news: USA in NYC prosecutions dropped 32% in 06. Not as part of main story, but buried in details is reference to some kind of tension about the death penalty. Don’t know how it works with USA & staff, but in NYS they’ve pretty much suspended it’s use, although it’s still on the books. Would like to be a fly on the wall on that one.
What’s really interesting is that Grey Davis thought Carol Lam was appropriate to appoint to the State Court position in spite of her contributing to Campbell’s Senatorial campaign.
A real case of bipartisanship…something that we have never seen the Bush Administration practice.
An examination of the nature of “Fact” is in order.
A fact is that which I believe to be true.
However:
Not everything I believe is indeed a fact!
Subtle, and true. Case:
The Sun rises revolves around the earth. A fact until it was proven otherwise. It was rejected by the ruling party, the Church.
Locality. It was a cherished physical belief, a fact until it went up against quantum physics…and lost.
The upshot of all this is fact is bandied about like some sort of absolute, especially by the right. It isn’t absolute. Very few facts are unassailable.
Most of what is considered fact is rather verisimilitude, “the state or quality of something that exhibits the appearance of truth or reality.”

SEN. HATCH: Pat, I didn’t interrupt you. Now, let me just tell you something. There is not one shred of evidence here that any of these appointments were made to, to use Senator Specter’s words, to, to, to interfere with an ongoing investigation or case. Not one shred of evidence. This is a tempest in a teapot and, and, and the president—everybody admits that the president—these people served at the pleasure of the president. What happened here is, the president’s goals and purposes were to go after immigration smuggling cases, gun cases, so they get tough on the misuse of guns, on pornography cases. And some of these people were not doing that. Now, where they got in problems is they, they said there were performance problems. What they meant, it seemed to me by the so-called word in performance, was that these people were not following up on these cases.
Take Carol Lam, for instance. Carol Lam was raised on your program, Tim, by Schumer. Carol Lam, it’s amazing to me she wasn’t fired earlier because for three years members of the Congress had complained that there had been all kinds of border patrol capture of these people but hardly any prosecutions. She was a former law professor, no prosecutorial experience, and the former campaign manager in Southern California for Clinton, and they’re trying to say that this administration appoints people politically? Of course they do. That’s what these positions are. But politically they’ve appointed people who have been approved by the Justice Department—the Judiciary Committee, in most cases, who have served well, are strong people and, and, frankly, these, these seven were really mishandled.
This is how they create reality though. They just keep saying it over and over. It doesn’t matter that it’s not true. They’ll make it true. They understand that history is negotiated not recorded.
