It wasn't like I was going to vote for him anyway, but this is just wrong:
Judith Giuliani once demonstrated surgical products for a controversial medical-supply company that used dogs – which were later killed – in operations whose only purpose was to sell equipment to doctors, The Post has learned.
"It was a horribly cruel, outrageous program," Friends of Animals President Priscilla Feral said about the demonstrations of medical staplers on dogs conducted by U.S. Surgical Corp. employees during Giuliani's tenure there in the late 1970s.
Feral said U.S. Surgical's demonstrations on hundreds of dogs each year through the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s were done to boost sales, not for medical re search or testing.
The dogs were "either put to death following the sales demonstrations because they can't re cover from them, or they die during them," Feral said.
"I'm not going to characterize her, but I hope she regrets it for what it was – a money-grubbing effort," said Feral, whose Darien, Conn.-based activist group waged a heated public-relations battle with the Norwalk-based company for more than a decade.
"I guess the question would be, how does she justify this now? What is her conscience at this stage?" Feral asked about Giuliani's as sociation with U.S. Surgical.
"There's no ethical justification for this."
Quite the fetching pair. She tortures small animals for kicks, his BFFs are crooks. What a fine encore to the Bush Junta it would make.

SIGH.
Fire this guy’s press agent. At least we know the “GOP slime machine” is working just fine, as usual!
JANE!
Hugs and love to you and the Doggies.
JANE!
“She tortures small animals for kicks, his BFFs are crooks.”
Well, let’s be fair.
She tortured small animals for money, not for kicks.
I didn’t know that he was related to Sen. Frist…
We can be thankful she hooked up with Ghouliani instead of Frist……
You should see what she does to cats!
And now, a song for John McCain and Lindsey Graham
Rudy & Judi are taking a short vacation to Canada so they can get in some quick baby seal-clubbing.
What I always think in response to this kind of animal cruelty story- may what you did to them be done in the next go-round, or the sweet hereafter, to you…
Ok, Jane.
That was just gross.
I don’t think I am tough enough to have read that.
One allegedly “good” week should not a candidacy make, except in the USA.
You know, Jane — Rudy has always been very close to his dommes.
Most dommes are decent humans. One of Rudy’s is a significantly decent one — gifted, lovely, a sincere mom, daughter and friend who has known much tragedy in her life.
Rudy bored the living crap out of her.
So to get some fun out of life for both of them… she made him cross-dress.
And life — at last — sparkled in his squinting eyes.
For, at last, life felt like opera — and he was learning to his shock and satisfaction that he was not to be the tenor but the diva of his dreams.
Rudy and Judy were particularly coy about how they met when they spoke with Barbara Walters.
They were not in that vein about her role in cabinet meetings or in his power as a lover.
There’s a reason why they are so avoidant.
And why he is irrational around her with his claims and promising…
The subby will say anything to please his mistress.
Or she will treat him like a dog.
And we know the terrible meaning that phrase acquires around her.
I’m surprised she didn’t marry the Kitty Kervorkian, Doctor Frist. He’s got more money, for one.

I wouldn’t want to have that in my karmic balance sheet, that’s for damn sure
9/11 survivor (sort of) @ 11
Oh. My. Goodness.
Of course, the Law of Balance requires that the most tyrannical assholes be precisely the ones who secretly crave the firmest hands.
Between Giuliani using shredded 9/11 humans to fill those naughty potholes and this little vivisection-as-a-sales tool scheme, this power couple certainly appear to have their
profits, er, prioritie$ in order.Mmmmmm, makes sense. In that pic, she’s got that Cruella DeVille look all over.
Twisted b*tch.
I think she sounds like a perfect follow on for Rove’s permanent R majority campaign and Gonzales’ torture program. Combine them. Torture & kill Ds.
If Guiliani gets the nomination, Dems might want to remind people of who the First Lady would be.
and people think there is no such thing as kismet
my question… can we work Bill Frist into this story? I mean, torturing dogs, torturing cats… seems a natural, GOP-wise.
then there’s always exploding frogs…
such nice people these GOPers are.
Did she change her name after she got her job?

Let’s check her coke purchases & DWI convictions before we get carried away.
Oh Jane, you have no idea what a nightmare Giuliani is. In NYC we refer to his time as “Giuliani Time”, a dark period of rascism and oppression here in our beloved big mango.
This man is seriously unbalanced. I can not believe how much the corporate media fawns over him. And it would be such fun watching him get his clock cleaned in a presidential campaign.
Hi Jane.
Here’s more from a 1988 Time article
What’s more is that Tyco (of convicted felon Dennis Kozlowski infamy) bought this outfit back in the day…anyone here surprised?
Maybe she can help with my gopher problem…
OMG. OMG…This is so gross and so sad.
This is one of those “what have we, as humans, become?” moments.
eCAHNomics @ 22
I get the impression that Rudy/Judy addictions involved leather studded dog collars, stilettos and the familiar refrain, “Yes mistress Judy.”
Marie Roget @ 8
I believe in this. I think you have to experience all the pain you’ve inflicted on others before you can be redeemed. The only problem is I can’t get my mind around how long this would take for the likes of Bush/Cheney.
Judy and Frist used to get high and then go out looking for strays…

Good lord, can this man get any sleazier? And I’m not really even paying attention, here.
Oh. My. God.
That DailyKos diary entitled “Judith Giuliani Killed Puppies” wasn’t a gag after all?
Ugh.
And Rudy actually made some stupid comment about the Mrs. sitting in on Cabinet meetings?
Cheese-on-rice, this guy is a f*cking moron; maybe they’re encouraging him to run because with this kind of crap he’ll make any Bush look good.
While not fawning over her brilliant husnband, this is what Judith also likes to do:

Then there’s this bit about about equal partnership in marriage:
I never understood the ongoing appeal of Guiliani with the Repubs until I read, on here I think, that Rudy bought the building that Amercian Media owned, including their archives, after they were attacked by the anthrax terrorists. All that sleazy information in the hands of one man!
Given the corruption that seeps out that they can’t prevent, I wonder how much scandal “prochoice”/”progay”/”proguncontrol” but a heckuva fine Republican Guiliani is sitting on down there in Florida.
Biodun @ 37
And she’s fertilizing the rose garden with what, exactly? [/snark]
I believe this is his third (second trophy) wife. Or maybe he’s a trophy husband.
I am surprised she hasn’t been recruited to demonstrate her techniques to Gonzo and John Yoo.

If you don’t like using animals for practice surgery, then the next time you have a life-threating injury, be sure to request a surgeon who has never practiced on animals.
I’m no fan of Guiliani, but it’s way unfair to call this woman a monster. It makes this blog look bad. Not as nutty as most things in the righty blogs, but getting there.
LOL: still one of the funniest bits ever !
The story of George Bush torturing frogs fell down the black hole. I think it was in Molly’s pre-nomination book. Little Georgie had fun by putting lit firecrackers inside of frogs – boom ha ha! It’s the kind of behavior that serial killer profilers are familiar with – but down the memory hole this bit of biography went.
Don’t let any reader/writer/legislator/campaigner get away with “Who knew?” This and more was available in book and newspaper form for lazy journalists and campaigners to find easily. The guy always was a thug. When they say, “Who knew?” you can say, “I knew and it wasn’t my job description to know, why didn’t you?”

P.S. I am listening to the Hayseed Huckbleberry and Shop-till-you-drop McCain’s presser. Good Lord, McCain sounds totally sedated and demoralized.
This man is in tought shape. I wouldn’t let him watch my pets over a long weekend.
Check out http://www.crooksandliars.com
The story points out that accompanying McCain were: “100 American soldiers, with three Blackhawk helicopters, and two Apache gunships overhead.” And that’s either a fishing vest or body armour he’s wearing.
Nonetheless, McCain told reporters: “that his visit to the market today was proof that you could indeed ‘walk freely’ in some areas of Baghdad.”
What a loser, as if someone is going to vote for a Republican Senator from the worst Senate in living voters history.
Oh, and wow he is not wearing a helmet – only 100 troops, three BH helicoptors, and two Apache gunships.. umm right.
So where did the bomb go off due to all the security used for this media event.
If I do not see him called a liar on all the major networks and newstations today then something aint right.

J @ 49
Um, this isn’t testing or training, it’s SALES by killing animals.
And I’ve had staples. They can pop out even with a LOT of practice; I ended up with a hematoma when one popped, took 10 weeks to clear it up.
EvilDrPuma @ 65
I don’t think you are really getting across how bitter your sarcasm is.
That’s my impression of him. When he was mayor, I was too busy working & being a single mom to pay attention to politics. But viscerally I always hated him (& I didn’t hate almost anybody until W became prez), but was never able to articulate why. Now that we are learning about him more thoroughly, as the national spotlight falls on him, the reasons for my intuition become more apparent.
J @ 49
I rarely channel Bill O’Reilly, but…shut up. Just shut up. There’s more to what she’s been involved with than “practicing on animals,” just as there was more to what Frist did than earning a medical degree.

In the R world, it’s called playing to the base.
If I may jump into the medical research on dogs question:
I love dogs and I work with surgeons. There are times when research must be done on mammals before it is done on humans.
The heart surgeries that we do on children in St. Petersburg are only possible because of earlier surgeries on dogs in particular.
However, using dogs to demonstrate surgical staples and then killing them is totally unnecessary, contributes NOTHING to medical research, and is just sick, sick, sick.
Bring these people down NOW.

Hmm yeah, instead of doing the obvious and lobbying ChimpCO to do the right thing, she turns the whole affair into a cushy fundraiser and then on the 2nd day she rested and thought it was good.
It raises the question of Ghouiliani’s own charitable giving. Given the amount of wealth he has amassed from his 9/11 celebrity – his personal donations to 9/11 charities should be considerable and I understand they are nil.

she is going to have to defend what she did if Rudy has any chance of getting re elected.
She cannot possibly admit how depraved her behavior was, instead the neo fascists will claim this sacrifice saved lives and they will ignore the fact that this was not a research project but a sales pitch
that’s what we have to hammer
this was NOT research, this was killing animals as a sales pitch
they MIGHT claim these were animals scheduled for destruction, if that is the case, the wing nuts will except this behaior

When I lived in NYC and Giuliani was Mayor, I felt like the city was beginning to resemble Berlin in the ’30’s, and I left.
[ABC This Morning Interview]
Cynthia McFadden: Rudy Giuliani said in the last few days that, if elected, his wife would be welcome to sit in on the Cabinet meetings. Would you see a role like that for yourself?
Elizabeth Edwards: I would not. I mean, what I am is a sounding board for John and if I have … a separate idea, I don’t go to John and say, “I think on education.” I go to John’s policy person and say, “Is this possible?”
Having grown up in a military family, I’m a true believer in the chain of command, and I don’t get to go — like any citizen, I don’t get to go straight to the president and say, “This is what I think” about something.
I’m a sounding board for him. He’ll ask me whether something rings true in a speech that he’s thinking about giving or asks for my feedback. But, honestly, when I have something separate to say, I go through the chain to do it.
Hugh @ 86

I can relate to the experience of not really hating anybody b4 the likes of Bush et al. and Rudy came around.
I never before experienced the kind of emotional/physical response to politics that I do now. The sight of Dick Cheney’s sneering mug on television makes me ill. I had an apoplectic fit when a couple of George Allen zombies dared to post their yard signs in front of my son’s school last fall. (no, it wasn’t a polling place….it was back to school night….and I, er, persuaded them to remove the signs).
I HATE these people. They are evil. They are liars, thieves and murderers.

What was Rich’s comment–something about compared to Elizabeth Edwards, everyone is cheese whiz?
Nobody caring much about global warming?
Here is a short summary of Massachusetts v. EPA, decided today by the U.S. Supreme Court. The summary is provided by a lawyer working on global warming and then edited by me. (These are not quotes from the Court’s opinion.) (I am also working on presenting this case to my law stuents today.)
And here is a bit more concerning our President and EPA’s argument that to combat global warming might interfere with the President’s foreign policy. Note: These are quotes from the Court’s opinion:
And then there is this:
That is because Congress stated in the Clean Air Act of 1970 that if something is a pollutant that endangers public health or welfare it must be regulated.
The Court, in the end, does not say that the Bush Administration’s EPA must regulate greenhouse gas emissions from automobiles, but it has to have a good reason for refusing to do so — one that it did not present so far. In the words of the Court:
If the Bush-era EPA wants to say now, after the case comes back to it, that greenhouse gases do not contribute to global warming and therefore do not endanger us, or that there are speficic policy reasons for letting us cook in Hell (my words), “EPA must ground its reasons for action or inaction in the statute.”
In short, the decision goes back to EPA and control for the rest of us goes forward to Congress.
I’m reminded of an old comedy movie (I can’t remember the name), where all of the scoundrels end up at the airport, and the confused motorcycle cop gets so frustrated, he yells out that everybody is under arrest at the airport. I thinking that every “tool” organization used by this administration should be identified and have all their e-mails subpoened to see how this spiderweb has really been woven. I know…not realistic, but I can dream…
I’m no great fan of Rudy, but could we at least try not to engage in “gotcha” politics? Unless she had a direct hand in the torture and killing of these dogs, I don’t see how this is germaine to the discussion of Rudy’s fitness for office.
We keep talking about raising the level of discourse in American politics, but we seem to keep falling back into the same old rut.

First off, Hadasah’s ties to big pharma were fair game, seeing as Holy Joe has a history of doing their bidding and getting paid for it.
Look, I’m not defending what Mrs. Giuliani may have done thirty years ago, I’m just saying that it should not be grist for the mill. If we’re going to raise the bar, let’s start by not digging up every little piece of dirt about a candidate’s spouse. Like I said, unless someone can show that she was out there strangling puppies with her bare hands and laughing about it, I don’t see how this is germaine.
Rudy has plenty of real issues that will kill him in the primaries. I don’t think we need to invent crap or create faux outrage.

I’ve always despised the eager whores who sacrifice animals to demonstrate surgical products and bring home six failure salaries.
You have no direct knowledge of my emotions.
My outrage is real. As is PETA’s.
And Rudy’s candidacy is in asystole.
Because of this real issue.
I’m not sure of the reliability of this story.

kirk murphy @ 146
I’m quite sure your outrage at the mistreatment of animals is real. However, we’re talking about something that happened in the late 70’s, which, if you’re old enough to recall, was not exactly a high-water mark for animal testing.
This woman was acting as a sales rep for that company, and nothing I’ve seen so far indicates that she even knew about the testing or condoned it.
If you want to make an issue of it, be my guest, but in the pantheon of real issues facing Giuliani, this is probably the least of his worries.
Right on!
I just scored a 67 Ford 3/4 ton 4×4.
I plan on doing the same paint.

Which is kind of my overall point – do we really want to engage in Drudge-style politics? I sure don’t.
it’s murder.
I tend to agree with Tom, not to make excuses for her behavior, but because I think Giuliani has many more personally relevant stories that need (un)covering.
As for the timeline, 30 years ago may seem out-of-bounds regarding a current spouse who wasn’t a spouse then, but considering the things we know about GWB’s childhoodlum interest in blowing up frogs, the college “hazing” with coathangers as brands… all well more than 30 years ago, and still they seem so relevant today.
This story, though, really makes me NOT want someone like the 3rd Mrs. Giuliani having any input into health care issues. Even 30 years ago, you’d think a nurse would have had issues with performing that kind of work. What was wrong with actual nursing?

Yes, it says a lot about his character.
The divorce itself is nothing. For all we know, Donna was just as much at fault as Rudy. A nice quiet separation would have upset only the hardest of core.
But you don’t let your kids find out you’re divorcing their mother by announcing it on national TV.
That’s not civilized behavior.
And the kids are now forced to be interviewed about their father, and asked to give him their support, when they likely wish the whole thing would just go away.
She tortures small animals for kicks,
This is grossly unfair. There is not one shred of proof that she tortured animals for kicks. Now profit well that’s another matter.
Is this the wife who will give such wonderful advice about all things presidential?
Excuse my confusion, I have a bit of trouble keeping track of the Giuliani wives.
Just Google: Giuliani Harding

IANAG: excellent!
Cruella DeVille. I don’t think we will have Rudi to worry about-I think the whole thing is a disaster everytime he tries. Andrew, Klerik, the marriages (including incest), the flip-flops, and now Cruella (and her secret marriage 2). I have been waiting for someone to make a big deal over him trying to hand the ports and the Homeland Security gig over to the mafia, but it really hasn’t happened. Go figure.
It was sales Tom, not “animal testing”.
The boopsie-bot surgical tool salesforce went out to strut and arch and make big eyes…
AND STAPLE PUPPIES AS A GODDAMN SALES PITCH
without even the excuse of testing.
The puppies were market props – picked out for euthanasia.
What part of STAPLED LIVING PUPPIES AND THEN KILLED THEM SO SHE COULD SELL GODDAMNED STAPLERS SO CRAPPY THEY MAIMED PATIENTS
has yet to sink in?
Hello neurons – calling all synapses.
Rudy’s honey chose to make her money from the stapling-puppies-before-you-murder-them industry.
In Rudy’s White House, the family pet would be stapled puppies – euthanized and dumped in the garbage.

How odd.
Here a nationally known blog front pages Rudy’s little problem with Cruella the Puppy Stapler, and Behold! new arrivals show up at the Lake to tell us this isn’t important. And then they muddle the facts in the way that favors Rudy. And then they tell us Rudy doesn’t care.
And we’ve been watching the Rethug PR attack teams since Donald Segretti.
As Rethugs decline, we see
more slime – less traction.
Nice try.
Tell the campaign we saw though it.
And Rudy – like all fascists – truly deserves his whippings.
He should know – he’s paid for enough.
For Rudy, the staplings are just a bonus.
Hope Cruella and Rudy enjoy PETA – for the rest of their natural and unnatural lives.
PETA will surely enjoy them.

Like I said, knock yourself out if you want to be outraged about something that happened thirty years ago before she even met Giuliani.
My entire point is that we shouldn’t be hypocritical about digging into spouses’ backgrounds in an effort to discredit a political candidate unless there is some kind of direct connection (re: Hadasah Liberman’s ties to big pharma). We all threw a fit when the GOP started flinging shit about Hillary when (and even before) she was First Lady, so to turn around and do the same, out of simple spite, lowers us to their level.
We can’t complain about the depths to which the political process has sunk if we’re not willing to take the high road ourselves.
