Goodling: By whom were you directed to check on US attorney “Bushie loyalty”? What was Rove’s direct or indirect involvement? Was making Rove happy part of the DOJ mission as you understood it? Did you personally research whether any of these activities were illegal? Were you informed by anyone else that your Bush loyalty activities were legal?

Scott Jennings: Describe all uses that the Bush administration is making of federal government resources to maintain political power, in addition to suborning the DOJ and abuse of GSA spending power. Describe how the plans were made (including who helped make them) for the DOJ firings and the GSA politicization program. Describe how you, Rove and others involved in these efforts stayed in contact. Described where all documents (including electronic files) relating to these activities can be found. Before they were indicted, how were DeLay and Abramoff involved in these activities?

Brent Tolman: Describe the development of the language inserted into the Patriot Act. Describe efforts you and others made to ensure it was undetected. Who directed you to insert the language into the Act? Were you also directed not to inform the Senate specifically as to the presence of such language, and if so by whom?

Scooter Libby’s memory expert: Please describe how Kyle Sampson’s memory can be clear on certain matters pertaining to making AG Gonzales the fall guy for the US attorney firings, and yet vague on so much else. Has “Rovenesia” (the inability to remember facts that might implicate Karl Rove directly in untoward activity) become a clinically defined category of memory loss, or will that be an outcome of these hearings?

Captain America was often a controversial figure, known for refusing to go along with the status quo and pointing out political corruption that sometimes went to the highest levels of the government. WASHINGTON (AP) – The White House scrambled Sunday to move up Attorney Alberto Gonzales’ planned testimony to Congress on April 17 about his involvement in firing eight federal prosecutors, only to get a cold shoulder from majority Democrats.

The effort reflected the frustration by Republican senators and the White House itself over how long it is taking the embattled attorney general to explain himself under oath. Congress has just begun a vacation – one week for the Senate, two for the House.

In a sign of Gonzales’ diminished standing on Capitol Hill, the Senate GOP leader offered lukewarm support for the nation’s top law enforcer, whose inconsistent explanations about the dismissals have become a distraction for the Bush administration.

Asked directly if he has confidence in Gonzales, Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said: “I can honestly say the president does.”

“What I can tell you at the moment is that he enjoys the support of the president, for whom he works,” he said. “I think most Republican senators are willing to give the attorney general a chance to come up before the Judiciary Committee and give his side of the story.”

Gonzales is scheduled to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee on April 17. White House counselor Dan Bartlett said the committee ought to reschedule the hearing for next week.

“Let’s move it up and let’s get the facts,” Bartlett said. “Let’s have the attorney general there sooner rather than later.”

The committee chairman, Sen. Patrick Leahy, said Gonzales had been offered earlier dates but turned them down. It was Gonzales who chose April 17, said Leahy, D-Vt., and that date will not change now because “everybody has set their schedule according to that.”

“It’s the date that the attorney general originally picked. It’s the date the hearing will take place,” Leahy said.

Who will protect the Iranian people from pre-meptive attacks on Iran by Israel and the U.S? GO READ FLYNNT LEVERETT AT THE NEW AMERICAN FOUNDATION.

As long as the Israeli lobby is in control of our foreign policy in the middle east the violence will escalate.

Israel wants an attack on Iran before the A*I*P*A*C trial in early June (if it is not dismissed, delayed for the 5th time or the right wing radicals take out Prosecutor Mc Nulty during this AG scandal). When American citizens realize once again that Israeli firsters here in the U.S. have never stopped passing off classified intelligence to the Israeli government and Israeli officials. ET @ 31– I just heard Alexander Cockburn speak and he brought up the point that Findley and others (McCloskey, Percy, etc.) have been burned/defeated by the lobby and other forces for speaking for the rights of Palestinians and for a more balanced foreign policy. Colbert is a genius. That night was the beginning of the unraveling of W. He was the first to call him on his shit in public. I will never forget it and I didn’t watch this year either just clips on C&L.

So on the plus side for the Democrats in regards to the USA scandal. For any Democrat who gets charged in the next few years. They’ll be able to make a lot of legal hay out the motivations for their prosecutions by the loyal Bushies.

In the old days, how I miss them, Sampson would have been called a file clerk. He wouldn’t have lasted long because once he did that aggregating, his job would have been to file the stuff. Even Fawn Hall kept files long enough to shred them. Fawn was a competent aggregator and worthy of the name.

What a ridiculous thing to say. Not only is it bad policy, not only is it bad politics, it’s also a terrible negotiating approach.

Seven Supreme Court Decisions and a Law

Today’s hearings suggest this History of Social Constitutional Law may not be as necessary as I thought yesterday, but who knows. Things change daily.

I’ve long been convinced one misunderstands the 1960’s, and the movements that characterize it, if you don’t know the inch by inch civil liberties legal history that came to pass in the 1950’s. Case Law can seem small potatoes — but I remain convinced if it had not been for these cases decided in 1957 and 1959, the 60’s would have been a very different matter.

Five Cases were decided in 1957, all but one on what became known as Red Monday, or June 17th, 1957. It was not Brown v. Board decided in 1954 that gave rise to the “Impeach Earl Warren” roadside signs mostly in the South — it was the Red Monday cases. (plus one).

During the run up to the Libby Trial, EW reviewed for us the Jencks Materials released to the defendent in December. It is named after “his” decision. Clinton Jencks was a New England Labor Organizer. In 1950 he complied with state law, and signed a non-Communist affidavit, swearing he had never been one. The US Government contended he lied, but refused to make available to him witnesses or documents on which they based the lie claim. Found guilty of the lie, the guilt was confirmed by the Appeals Court — but when it finally arrived at the Supreme Court, Warren and Brennan led the argument that he should not only get his request (that the judge review the evidence in camera) but on a 5/4 decision he was awarded the rights to see all evidence, and cross examine and depose witnesses, including all reports of FBI informants. As Warren put it; How could Jencks get a fair trial if he could not see the reports of evidence against him? The decision gave extra emphasis to this principle if such reports and witnesses were to be presented against him at trial. (Jencks was not retried.)

The next decision in June, 57 was Sweezy v. New Hampshire. (Yep, the Sweezy of Monthly Review Fame.) Paul Sweezy was a Marxist Economist who taught at the U of New Hampshire, and when this caught the attention of the Legislature, they demanded the Attorney General review his lecture notes, and Sweezy’s involvement with the Progressive Party. (That would be the Henry Wallace Progressives of 1948 to which he had once delivered a lecture — he was not a member). Sweezy appealed through the New Hampshire Courts, lost, and finally appealed to the Supreme Court, and his decision came, June 17, 1957.

I use buzzflash.com as home page. When you go there, you can go to the box on the upper right side which says see new headlines and choose a timeframe, like the past two hours, for instance.

The people running it shy away from the Israel/Palestine issue mostly, and NEVER link to stuff related to 9/11 questions. They’re pretty uncommited re the Dem presidential candidates, and, unlike me are very, very anti-gun.

Great page, though – lotsa links to print media.

Nothing can touch Stephen Colbert’s truth telling at last years dinner. He told the truth about the war, the press and the Bush administration. It was a sight to behold. The press looked terribly uncomfortable because Colbert pulled their “groupthink” underwear down for all the world to see.

I think Colbert’s routine pretty much rendered the Dinner inconsequential.
