Matthew Dowd, photo from PBS.
Personal responsibility? Not much. Cry me a bloody (Tigris) river (emphasis added):
AUSTIN, Tex., March 29 — In 1999, Matthew Dowd became a symbol of George W. Bush’s early success at positioning himself as a Republican with Democratic appeal.
A top strategist for the Texas Democrats who was disappointed by the Bill Clinton years, Mr. Dowd was impressed by the pledge of Mr. Bush, then governor of Texas, to bring a spirit of cooperation to Washington. He switched parties, joined Mr. Bush’s political brain trust and dedicated the next six years to getting him to the Oval Office and keeping him there. In 2004, he was appointed the president’s chief campaign strategist.
Looking back, Mr. Dowd now says his faith in Mr. Bush was misplaced.
[snip]
He criticized the president as failing to call the nation to a shared sense of sacrifice at a time of war, failing to reach across the political divide to build consensus and ignoring the will of the people on Iraq. He said he believed the president had not moved aggressively enough to hold anyone accountable for the abuses at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, and that Mr. Bush still approached governing with a “my way or the highway” mentality reinforced by a shrinking circle of trusted aides.
[snip]
He said his decision to step forward had not come easily. But, he said, his disappointment in Mr. Bush’s presidency is so great that he feels a sense of duty to go public given his role in helping Mr. Bush gain and keep power.
Mr. Dowd, a crucial part of a team that cast Senator John Kerry as a flip-flopper who could not be trusted with national security during wartime, said he had even written but never submitted an op-ed article titled “Kerry Was Right,” arguing that Mr. Kerry, a Massachusetts Democrat and 2004 presidential candidate, was correct in calling last year for a withdrawal from Iraq.
“I’m a big believer that in part what we’re called to do — to me, by God; other people call it karma — is to restore balance when things didn’t turn out the way they should have,” Mr. Dowd said. “Just being quiet is not an option when I was so publicly advocating an election.”
[snip]
Mr. Dowd, 45, said he hoped in part that by coming forward he would be able to get a message through to a presidential inner sanctum that he views as increasingly isolated. But, he said, he holds out no great hope. He acknowledges that he has not had a conversation with the president.
[snip]
Mr. Dowd does not seem prepared to put his views to work in 2008. The only candidate who appeals to him, he said, is Senator Barack Obama, Democrat of Illinois, because of what Mr. Dowd called his message of unity. But, he said, “I wouldn’t be surprised if I wasn’t walking around in Africa or South America doing something that was like mission work.”
He added, “I do feel a calling of trying to re-establish a level of gentleness in the world.”
Not so fast. You can't say you want to "restore balance" and say you want all politcal conflict to go away while you go on walkabout for some quality time with your mid-life existential crisis. Your psychodramas helped to shit the bed, now get over yourself and join the fight – yes, the fight – to undo what you've done. Gentleness, my ass. Grow up and take some responsibility, and stop pretending nice rhetoric and kumbayah will make anything right again. It won't. (Cliff Schecter agrees.)
The people you joined up with have had the very agenda you abetted since at least the days of Nixon, and unless we rid our public life of them, they'll be back again. You were an insider. Start talking about what you know. Grab your knife and start the stabbing. That's how you can restore some balance, wanker. And if this is any evidence of your newfound moral compass, I'd say it's not quite pointing true north, now, is it ? (H/T to Julia from Sisyphus Shrugged, via email. She has even more here. Oh, and you didn't think digby could leave this alone, did you?)
All these people know how to do is evade responsibility. Next exhibit, Barbara Comstock protege, Monica Goodling (emphasis added):
After graduating in 1999, Goodling landed a job at the D.C. headquarters of the Republican National Committee just as the 2000 Bush-Cheney campaign was ramping up. Goodling’s position put her inside the newly created war room for political opposition research. There, she worked alongside a crew of party faithful who would later shepherd her through the ranks at Justice.
Among Goodling’s close associates were Barbara Comstock, head of opposition research for the RNC and later the chief spokeswoman for Ashcroft; Griffin, Comstock’s deputy, whom Goodling would later help to win the interim appointment to replace one of the eight ousted U.S. attorneys in Arkansas; and Mark Corallo, who in 2003 took the helm of the Justice Department’s Public Affairs Office after Comstock.
Goodling quickly won Comstock’s trust for her hard work and talent for digging up information on tort litigation and judicial nominations. And when Griffin left in 2001, Goodling became Comstock’s deputy. They helped prepare Ashcroft and Theodore Olson for their confirmation hearings to be attorney general and solicitor general, respectively.
When Comstock became Ashcroft’s spokeswoman in 2002, she brought Goodling along as her deputy. Goodling stayed for three years. In no time, Goodling became “indispensable” to the office, says Corallo, who became Ashcroft’s spokesman in 2003. “I have never known anybody that works harder or does better work than her.”
Of course, regular readers of FDL will recognize Comstock as the propaganda flack for all things Scooter Libby. We kept hearing that plaintive whine justifying Goodling's 5th Amendment plea (before even being called to testify before Congress), "Look what happened to Scooter Libby!" Anyone want to hazard a guess where that line came from, or who among Goodling's past mentors may have advised her to take the 5th rather than face questions under oath about possible crimes committed?
Eyes on your own paper, please! Hey Hiatt, you paying attention?!
Goodling has taken one route to evade (for the time being) responsibility, but Dowd has taken another route, a more sophisticated one.
On the right wing, Mr. Dowd, all you have to do is kiss Jesus' James Dobson's ass in Macy's window and all is forgiven, like it never happened. "All that's left," Dobson says, "is our friendship."
On the left, we actually demand and expect longstanding community reparation, along with a full acceptance of responsibility. If John Dean or David Brock can do it, you can, too.
But you can't do it cruising the beaches of Granger Bay with a pina colada in one hand, a bible in the other and a pocketful of divorcee's condoms stashed in a sandy blanket with your Internet viagra and Amway sunblock.

woo-hoo!
one California drought breaks.
(and now for the pleasure of reading your post, Pach)
Go Kirk..
Oh and Fitz!
Evening, Pach.
Evenin’, nite owls.
This got EPU’d…
Just watched an interview Al Gore did on tv in Sweden. The host wished him a happy birthday.
She asked him about running for president, and if he might be able to accomplish more with regard to the global warming issue if he were president.
Al Gore: “I don’t have any plans to be a candidate for president again. I haven’t completely ruled out going back into politics at some point in my life. But the reason I don’t ever expect to be a candidate again is partrly because I’ve fallen out of love with politics, and I have less patience for some of the aspects of the politicsl system. But also because the way the political dialog is conducted over these 30 second TV commercials now, there is less of a chance to deal in depth with the biggest crisis that we have to face–this climate crisis.”
Dowd’s got skin in the game now (his son’s in Iraq) and all his assumptions have come crumbling down. Fundamentally, these are dishonest people, and their dishonesty must be exposed. I do not welcome Mr. Dowd back to the Democratic Party — there must be a neutral zone of Purgatory, especially for someone who left our party in 1999 to support his governor’s bid for the White House.
Desolation Row.
TeddySanFran @ 8
The Connecticut For Lieberman Party has some room to grow.
Dowd’s hiding behind his kid to make a craven, calculated political switchback.
Check out those Sisyphus Shrugs links. He has a history of this.
I believe this “conversion” like I believe frontruners are true fans.
Mr. Dowd is a fool.
And yet he says “I like the guy”. Maybe that was his first mistake and then the others were just part of the snowball.
Pachacutec @ 9
Dylan’s still got it goin’ on after all these years.
Evenin’ Pach!
Pachacutec @ 11
I noticed his praise for moderation and civility, which makes me think he wants to sucker the Democrats into following the DLC/Third Way/triangulation/Broderism bullshit.
Maybe Mr. Dowd needs to grow some “Big Kahunas” and undo the damage that was done…
I’ll repeat my earlier criticism of Dowd. I’m really glad he’s finally come around, but he’s a bit late to the party, and none of the things he’s criticising Bush for are things that we didn’t already know at the 2004 election. As far as I’m concerned, he’s got six years of penance to do.
This is my post from HuffPo earlier this evening on Dowd:
Sorry Dowd, too little, too late…It’s going to take far more than a little mea culpa like this to rehabilitate yourself. Too bad you couldn’t invision the impact of your words BEFORE your son got sent over to Iraq. Of course, why do I think you were probably one of those making fun of Cindy Sheehan? I hope, for the sake of your ex-wife, that your son returns safely.
To add since Ms Goodling was not on HuffPo:
As far as Ms Goodling is concerned, I rather doubt that she will do anything even as mild as Dowd as she seems like a total tru believer. Although I would still like to know who’s paying her legal fees. A partner at AkinGump does not come cheap…
Frank Probst @ 17
Yeah, my main reaction while reading that was, “How the FUCK could you not have noticed???”
TeddySanFran @ 8
He could go on a mission right where it counts.
I bet Natasha is advising Monica. I can hardly wait to see this played out. Barbara Comstock OMFG
Dowd. Dowd. I remember this guy. He went over to the other side. I hated him for it then. But forgot, over the years, that he existed. What a prick. Sleep in the bed you made buddy.
Per http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04…..8lP6hOwPer
Looking back, Mr. Dowd now says his faith in Mr. Bush was misplaced.
And now he’s impressed by Obama!
I was thinking the same thing, lolo. Did Big Bad Barbara get Monica *doncha just love the karma of that name* the expert hi priced lawyer?
I’m tired of the “I like the guy” defense, too. He’s an asshole. If you like him anyway, then you should say, “He’s an asshole, but I like him anyway.” I have a few friends who fall into this category. And I wouldn’t want any of them to be President. He might have been okay as the 8th grade class president, but not as the leader of our nation.
This man Dowd was converted (back) to Republicanism (as Texas became Republican) by his friend and co-instructor, Karl Rove. Anyone who would follow Karl Rove into the majority state party and then abandon Bush now can only be called the worst kind of craven opportunist. Perhaps there’s a slot for him at Unity08? I bet he and Marshall Wittman could have a hell of a circle jerk.
Frank Probst @ 25
Damn right!
Wigwam @
23
And now he’s impressed by Obama!
What a difference a day makes…..
I wonder what tomorrow’s revelation will be for Mr. Dowd….
(really don’t trust that guy)
Dowd is tlaking about bridging a political divide that he helped foster. IF he came back to the Democratic Party he would be a tepid conservative Demo searching for his next Republican muse.
I hope his son makes it back undamaged but unfortunately he helped damage the children of many others.
Is this guy related to MoDo?
I know the DLC supported Bush attacking Iraq. But does any one know where this awful little group stands on this issue today?
Suzanne @ 24
There’s a problem with Monica having a high-priced lawyer as a federal employee, unless she’s paying for it her own damn self, though. Has anyone checked Monica’s employment status at DoJ?
I love that her name is Monica.
Now that they’ve lost the majority, some of the little rats long for “kinder, gentler” treatment than they gave. I just hope Conyers and Waxman don’t run out of handcuffs.
Suzanne @ 30
Not sure, but we can always call him MaDo.
Teddy, I think it was over at Muckracker (?) that I read she was using up her accrued leave time with expectations of returning to her normal duties at an unspecified date.
TeddySanFran @ 26
watch him go to work for Obama and work on the double secret Spy on the Qt bs and be a saboteur
Visiting my family right after the 2000 election – ie, the settlement of Bush vs. Gore by the Supremes, I said “Who knows, we may come to love Bush.”
By the time he was ratcheting up rhetoric after the US Navy reconnaissance plane’s forced landing on Hainan Island, I realized falling in love with W wasn’t in my future. Even after 9/11 and the seeming success in Afghanistan, there was just way too much negative info on Bush’s overall policy direction coming out for me to feel he was going to bring people together.
Matthew Dowd has a pretty dismal record, and he’s got a lot to learn and a lot to admit to before I’m going to give him more than a civil handshake.
Dowd can visit all his buddies in the Federal Pen — Scooter, KKKarl, Kyle, and Monica.
TeddySanFran @ 32
on leave, but still employed
The smell of bullcrap on a Friday dump-day!
“More US Military Casualties than Iraqis”b at a time the Iraqi military is supposed to be taking the leading role in the “surge”.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/200…..2iclHMWM0F
Imagine the casualties if the Americans were going in first? Yep! Tell McCain how great things are going!
From the NYT article:
um…
“education and immigration?”
he helped sell the occupations, continue the most corrupt and criminal administration in our history, and slime Kerry.
now he’s blaming the target of his affection and loyalty for his mistakes that cost hundreds of thousands of lives, our reputation and so much more???
I am glad he’s seen the light for whatever reason. Too little, too late to get all the blood off his hands, imho. Hope it helps to bring bushco down in the eyes of those creatures that still believe in him, but holy smoke.
Suzanne @ 35
Well, then she better have boatloads of accrued leave, cuz she’s not returning anywhere anytime soon.
lolo @ 36
Ah, good point. There is alot of precedent for political operatives like this bozo making these kinds of moves. Any Obama people out there…don’t be fooled! These kind of things don’t go unnoticed anymore thanks to places like FDL. You don’t want to make the us unhappy now do you?
I get very uncomfortable when these supposedly heterosexual men (Tweety, Dowd) get all gooey about other men (”fall in love like that”) in the political sphere, especially W.
Matt in AZ, yep, he can have the Chuck Colson role.
TeddySanFran @ 44
They want the John Wayne type to smooth out the rough spots in their visions of life. They need a figure they can be submissive to.
TeddySanFran @ 44
I think it’s really weird and it makes me uncomfortable, too.
bizarro.
I discovered a few months ago that a man that I was in high school with is a partner at Akin Gump. I’m thinking I might have to send him an e-mail and ask (just for sh*ts and grins of course) what the going rate per hour is for a partner there
He didn’t fall in love with Bush, he fell in love with Bu$h. And with the Dems on the rise, it’s the same love all over again.
DC/K Street Elites.
Well, I’m delighted to learn about Goodling’s Comstock connection. The more links between the current scandals and convicted felon and former SAO Irve Libby, the better.
bonkers @ 43
Yeah, if he doesn’t spill all and come clean then he is full of crap. He better bring it home or he is toast.
So, Dowd was sooooo disappointed with Clinton he “like fell in love with George Bush.” What an Idiot!!!!!!!
Pachacutec @ 49
OMG, Pach! Are you suggesting he is only in it for the $$’s!
I would say the $$’s and the POWER.

OT (sorta):
They’re selling postcards of the hanging
They’re painting the passports brown
The beauty parlor is filled with sailors
The circus is in town

And the riot squad they’re restless
They need somewhere to go

From Desolation Row.
This man personally contributed to damaging the world. His poor judgment played a signifant role in damaging our democracy.
I believe in redemption, but it doesn’t come easy. We all make mistakes, sometimes HUGE mistakes. When you make a mistake you find a way to make things better. You certainly don’t make things better by running away from the mess you’ve made and the people you’ve harmed. I’m glad he admitted his role in the destruction, but he needs to suck it up and figure out a way to make things better here where he screwed things up. He can’t change what happened, but he can stand up and deal with the fallout. A big part of making things better would be to ensure that the others involved face their responsibilty too.
TeddySanFran @ 44I get very uncomfortable when these supposedly heterosexual men (Tweety, Dowd) get all gooey about other men (”fall in love like that”) in the political sphere, especially W.
That was a really strange way to put it. And what do you mean especially W? Any further news on the Gannon/Guckert (sp) saga? Will Waxman get the secret service to release the visitor logs do you think?
Isn’t David Brock one of the Media Matters principals? Now *that’s* making amends.
My, my. I wondered which FireDog would fillet Mr. Dowd. Nicely done.
Dowd’s going to have to make a couple decades of mea culpas — I figure at least until he has a grandchild firmly ensconced in grade school.
Assuming he has grandchildren some day.
It’s going to take that long for us to undo the damage done by this administration.
Hm. If Waxman went the Ed*ard Teller route, he’d be “Henry *axman”. I kinda like it.
TeddySanFran @ 54
You know, I’m not so much creeped out by this as I am just completely dumbfounded by it. Even after several beers, it would take me well under twenty seconds to peg Bush as a halfwit phony. I would probably start introducing him to my friends as one of the guys Holden Caulfield couldn’t stop talking about. I just don’t get the attraction. I’d have an easier time comprehending, oh, Angelina Jolie dumping Brad Pitt for Henry Kissinger, and then raving about the sex.
Zee @ 56
Yes. Dowd must actively work to expose the machine he helped create to sunlight and Congressional investigation. He must, in fact, dedicate his life to this effort.
from the NYT article
I am sorry for his losses, but could it be that his rhetoric and his belief in bush could have somehow influenced his son to join and fight his daddy’s war? Could his wife have left him for not only the loss of one child, but also the possibility of losing now two and the loss of the husband she once knew?
Yet he still didn’t protest the war because of his “his continued personal affection”.
Frank Probst @ 61
Same here. All I see is an adult version of the standard smug, selfish, entitled, preening fratboy.
“When you fall in love like that,” he said, “and then you notice some things that don’t exactly go the way you thought, what do you do? Like in a relationship, you say ‘No no, no, it’ll be different.’”
Ah, a story just like every other abused
spousepartner. If he’d listened to something other than the sweet words of praise, he’d have been out of that relationship before it went to h*ll.Terry, when I say especially W, I mean what Frank sez: there’s just no way I can comprehend any attraction to the man, whether intellectual, emotional, or physical. He is utterly and completely repellent in all ways. But that’s just me.
Terry Olson @ 57
That was a really strange way to put it. And what do you mean especially W? Any further news on the Gannon/Guckert (sp) saga? Will Waxman get the secret service to release the visitor logs do you think?

Pach wrote, ‘…You were an insider. Start talking about what you know. Grab your knife and start the stabbing. That’s how you can restore some balance, wanker…”
Ummmmm. Count me out on that knife and stabbing part.
Generating creative ideas, brainstorming solutions, raising money, supporting good candidates — count me in.
Acts of violence and destruction — count me out. Not interested. I leave that kind of sh*t to Barbara Comstock and Karl Rove.
Under no circumstances do I intend to act in a fashion that would put me in the company of those malignant, repellant hucksters.
As for Matthew Dowd, at least he has a conscience, which is more than I have ever been able to discern of Babs Comstock.
If he needs to go on Walkabout, he should take one. If it opens his eyes to the larger world, then it will be a good thing. With his skills, more wisdom and a stronger conscience, he could do some good in his life.
I’m not the most devout Christian, but the lesson of the Prodigal Son nevertheless does make sense to me. Why cast stones at a man grappling with the evil that he’s helped unleash on the planet? What point is there in that? How is that going to help solve global warming? How is that going to restore integrity to the DoJ?
Karl Rove would be incapable of such introspection, let alone the prospect of a Walkabout.
Godspeed to Mr. Dowd; he needs to heal himself. Then perhaps he can join the rest of us in seeking to heal a world that is deeply and profoundly troubled.
TeddySanFran @ 66
Not just you, Teddy.
TeddySanFran @ 66
No it’s not, Teddy.

There is a story about a man asking JP Morgan (or some other big poobah) how much it costs to maintain his yacht, to which the Great Man said, “If you have to ask a question like that, you can’t afford a yacht.”
So with law firms. If you have to ask how much their rate is, you can’t afford them.

It gets to a point where you almost start to doubt your sanity, when you always hear him described in ways that are in absolute contradiction to what you perceive.
Like when he gives these incredibly awful press conferences which are embarrassing to watch, and then the media raves about how fucking masterful he was. It’s surreal.
Sorry mods, I may have just used one of the magic words :-(
All that love talk and the stuff about his personal life is inoculation. This guy is making a career move.
I don’t believe a word of it. If I’m wrong, he’ll prove me wrong by doing what Brock did, telling the story of Republican corruption from the inside. Brock’s written books about it. But I think Dowd is angling for new clients, nothing more.
One thing this story made me think of was a post I read a while back about Bush’s falling popularity. Despite what Dean Broder thinks, the poster argued that Bush has no where to go but down. Believing in Bush is like believing in Santa Claus. For a while, you think he’s the bomb. Then you start to think that maybe you got suckered, but you go through this phase of really really wanting to believe you were right about the guy. (This is where a lot of people were in the 2004 election, I’m afraid.) When you finally stop believing, it’s a huge letdown, but you can never go back to believing again.

This man was an insider in the Rove/Bush regime.
He knew exactly what their agenda was or he would not have been brought into the inner cirlcle. You do not get to be part of the team without accepting and agreeing to “the Plan”.
As far as I am concerned, no amount of “I’m sorries” will remove the blood from his hands. He is just a culpable as the rest of them.
I’m truly sorry that his son is in Iraq and that he is the one who will pay for his fathers Karma.
I hope he comes home safely and soon with all the rest to our brave young men and women.

name brand prescription drugs will get your comment caught.
I read Taylor’s take on this, too, and I have to say that this Dowd sounds like one stupid sumbitch. And what’s he on about? Obama’s “message of unity”, which if you’ll recall, was what he thought Bush was selling back in 2000. Nothing against Obama here, but when you’ve been burned that badly, don’t you want to take a step back and reevaluate how you rate candidates a little?
Maybe he could go work for Unity ‘08. He’d be perfect.
Bush is an attractive male in the same sense that a male cheerleader (which he was) can be attractive. They have a slick wholesome look (he was 18 once, you know) but you don’t think of them as really being men. To this day, Bush does not look like a man. He looks like a man consciously acting the role of a man. He is Babs in men’s clothing.

Okay so again I’m late for the party..

Unbelievable how they think that if you say it often enough it will become true. I’m so sick of liars.
To be honest…this is a good sign.Rats jumpin the boat signals fear makeing the rounds in certain circles.
Gonzo angered me the other day when some one mentioned a statement abot 5-6 thousand”domestic terroist websites”here in the usa…first I was spooked, then I got bone-mad and I am still bone-mad….who the fuck does the crew of asshat think they are..call me names,M.F.we got trouble
Eli @ 106
Seems we have different ways of detecting bullshit, but they both work well. *grins*
Helen @ 122– hope neither broke!
LOL.
I do wonder what cspan’s viewership is now– I bet it’s grown enormously.
Suzanne @ 124
Well, I am surely not worried about damaging my TV. While I was throwing the shoe I thought “I am never getting my news from TV again.”
A guy does the equivalent of deciding to dance w/the Devil, then looks on for six yrs. while evil is unleashed & says nothing.
Not a candidate for redemption w/out atonement, Dowd. Not even close, not yet.
A lot of people fell in love with Bill Clinton; I remember especially Dee Dee Meyers’ disillusionment; Stephanopolus as well spoke of being disappointed. Clinton could have done so much good in the world if he hadn’t been such a self indulgent fool. People like to blame Ralph Nader for the first Bush election. No Monica Lewinsky, I would like to remind you, no George Bush.
I hate what’s happened in the past six years. I would have a difficult time accepting the most sincere sounding change of heart from Cheney, Rove, Rumsfield, or Bush. But it’s important to remember a take no prisoners attitude is not a problem solving attitude. It’s important to recognize even Nelson Mandela called for reconciliation.
So I am having a hard time understanding the depth of the animus in these comments; don’t we want the spell broken for those hypnotized by the sphinx? Or do we need to have an enemy we can whip with our own self-righteousness?
Dowd isn’t asking for forgiveness, and isn’t offering to make amends. He’s simply telling us how he feels. He’s not alone in his pain, but his speaking out is really quite rare. And while I know a number of people who feel the way he does, they’re pretty timid, and need the encouragement of a strong example to express themselves. I hope they take heart from what he says.
alabama @ 133
And follow suit.
Mandela called for truth and reconciliation.
No jumping to the second without the first.
That’s a “problem solving attitude.”
Why did the rest of us know that Bush was evil and a liar in 2004 but this guy didn’t? Why was he blind and stupid? DO you think he really changed or he just wants to be with the people that will be on top next time?
I still think of Clinton as being the best republican prez we had in a long time…he screwed the working poor with nafta.gat..all those trade deals welfare”reform”…telecomunication act…the guy was socially sorta cool..but hes was no freind of the workin man
I find it interesting that in his mea culpa Dowd invokes the Buddhist word “karma” as opposed to the Christian “sin.” But if he truly understood the meaning of karma (as opposed to sin), then he would have to believe that karmic retribution is due, sooner or later. (By contrast, sin can be “forgiven” through confession or prayer.)
Let us hope that he is using the word karma in its correct sense, and not just as a buzzword. That would mean he understands he has a long road to travel before he can have real peace of mind again.

So, he went from being a Democrat to joining the anti-Democratic party and helping Bush get elected twice.
He’s going to need to work awfully hard for the rest of his life to undo the damage he’s done. If he doesn’t, then may he hang his head in shame for all his days left on planet Earth.

The NYT editorial concludes with this paragraph:
The investigation of the firings of the United States attorneys seems to be closing in on Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, who should have been fired weeks ago. But Congress should bring equal scrutiny to the more powerful Mr. Rove. If it does, especially by forcing him to testify in public, it will find that he has been at the vortex of many of the biggest issues they are now investigating.
How long before the CW is “then, when you’re done scrutinizing Rove, start on Bush”?

opportunism, adulation, access, acquiescence and then, a gentle rebuke and some pseudo self- reflection.
Hi Cassie!
AZ Matt: Amy Goldstein was one of the people covering the Libby trial who, along with her colleague, Carol Leonnig, stood out. She’s also quite a likable, unostentatious person. Looks like she’s turned in another solid piece of reporting, though I have not read it yet.
Tom @ 150
Ohhh…..I like that! I noticed some of the anti-Democrats in Waxman’s hearing were using the Luntz special. I keep hoping Waxman will tell them to knock it off. At least the “press” got on Shrub’s case about it and he’s since stopped.
Can W. attack Iran without getting permission from congress??
Pat @ 158

“Can”? I dunno.
“Will”? Absolutely.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if I wasn’t walking around in Africa or South America doing something that was like mission work.”
It’s been a long time since I was in school but I think that a double negative is a positive, no? Wouldn’t be surprised if he wasn’t means he would be surprised if he was. I’m sure the Republicans will miss his excellent language-mangling skills.
Truth like everything else starts off slowly. I personally don’t understand why those of us against the war have joined those who have supported it in making no attempt to allay the cost of this war from falling upon our children and grandchildren. It breaks my heart to think of the curse we’ve brought upon them. You want to stop the war? Start demanding a progressive income tax that pays for the cost of the war to date. The war would stop tomorrow. Sure, right?
I personally saw through and keep seeing through Ronald Reagan–Watt, Cheney, Rumsfield, Pointdexter, Elliot Abrams; most indicted administration in industry; horrible tax policy that put the nation in unconscionable debt; death squads in Latin America. But more than half of our nation saw him then and see him now a great President. Why? because the Soviet Union keeled over. The only reason people have seen through Bush is that he hasn’t had Reagan’s luck. Same folks, same political philosophy. It wasn’t hard for me to see George Bush coming. I saw how vindictive the anti Clintonistas were, almost pornographic in their lust for his blood.
We still have the future; I want people to wake up and change, myself included, not a pound of flesh.
Pardon my ignorance, but what does CW stand for ans in post no. 151?
Bedtime for me, gang. Don’t sing kumbayah and pretend nothing happened while I’m gone, please!
Glad to see you sticking around, Cassie.
Color me stupid, but by attacking Iran he expects to accomplish….what?

Anyone wonder if he isn’t just trying to give a curse of a kiss to Obama on his way to new missionary positions? If this guy tries to give any advice..he needs to be belittled, heckled and told to go stand in a corner for at least a decade. Uh-huh. Otherwise he’d still be in Chimpy’s corner.
There is a certain breed of Texas Democrat that is known for its amoral opportunism. Henry Cuellar is one. Matthew Dowd is another. Bush and his buddies — particularly Rove — spent much time working to subvert and corrupt key Texas Democrats, particularly key Hispanic ones, in order to win.
The crap about Clinton is just that: Crap. Dowd just wanted to be with the team with the money and the power. If it wasn’t for his son’s ass being on the line, he’d still back Bush even with Bush at 29% approval ratings.

Tom #150: This works on several levels. I always use “anti-” in front of most anti-Democratic positions (pro-choice and anti-choice for instance).
This is great because it helps bust a frame that the anti-Democrats have been able to construct, where Democrats are against everything and always complaining. I always try to turn that shit back on them, and this works for that. Plus, combining anti- and Democratic, you’re explicitly branding them with what Luntz was trying to avoid with his “Democrat” Party. When they’re NOW using the spread of democratic values through the Middle East to justify our invasion of Iraq, you’re calling them anti-democratic. Nice. Hope you don’t mind me stealing that!
Wow, dude did damage to his career to make a bucket of cash and now he so sorry.
In some ways the analogy to the Nazi’s may be apt… “the lie theory”. What everyone neglects however is the real power and money in it. The big lie is only good for the morons. When it comes to money and power people join the party (be it Baath, Nazi, or “a Bushie”) to get one or more of each (Money and might).
To hell with them. Just like the fellow that will jump you on a stop sign to get to work 10 seconds early so they can surf the web all day. Everywhere in all time there are a ton of people who will do anything to gain themselves 1 second, or 1 cent – even if it means someone elses (your) life.
To hell with them.
What’s going to happen when all the blackwater soldiers come home to their families. They are going to be the nations dirty little secret. How many of them will end up singing to Waxman??
Roommate just came home & asked what the FDL post was this p.m. When he read it the reaction was, “That effing bastard drank the Kool Aid. Now he’s whining because he got lime flavor w/strips of bologna in it?
Also, you inspired us, Pach. Off to dig out some Dylan cds…
Marie Roget – play “Masters Of War”, and play it real loud.
Here is my post from HuffPo earlier this evening on Dowd:
Kurt Vonnegut’s famous words apply to Dowd and every other limp-dick sycophant who kept quiet for so long out of some half-queer personal “affection” for George W. Bush:
“I could carve a better man out of a banana.”
Dowd, you’re a limp-dick sissy. You and your kind knew exactly what kind of people you were pimping for, and yet you all did it anyway.
Now you’re telling us you don’t want to be the last rat off the ship – that’s what this “come to Jesus” media bullshit is all about – and that you’re really a nice guy after all.
No sale, punk.
If Bush attacks Iran he won’t need to wait but 5 minutes for history to start making us outside of the bubble start paying.
Ya know, from my own experience as a military brat, I think it’s unlikely that Dowd would be dissing his sons CinC because his son was sent to Iraq. Us brats know that the military can smite you in unexpected ways if you shoot off your mouth. If he doesn’t watch it he could get his son sent to the current dirtiest fighting.

Writing a book is hard and time consuming – Dowd is just another narcistic middle-aged whore, failed husband and father and traitor to his “president” – and his nation – deserving of a f*ck you, insulting letter to follow. That’s all.
End of story. I recommend we simply disappear the creep from our thoughts.
All this come to is a bait and switch anyway. Everyone has know for years what a bunch of crooks and anti-Americans these fools are.
Hell I got tired of sending emails to folks on the crime of the month in Dec 2004. At least they figured some of it out with Katrina.
Now its a crime a day, and its clear that more than an I am sorry is needed. Cop a plea to your crimes and reveal what was done and is being done. Are all of them criminals…no – but a whole hell of a lot of crimes have been commited and their syndicate looks like a cracked out spider’s web of inter-connections.
Helen @ 188

hey npb… how’s the southern end of monterey bay? clear skies up here in the mountains at the north end.
The spin that Americans don’t want to see oversight is a crock as well. Many of us have already sat down with popcorn for some of the hearings and need to check what is going on with what day. And some of the real good ones have not even started yet.
I did not have a job during the blowjob impeachment and watched some of that which was a singular and moderatly boring scandel (sex sells, but for my buck abuse of power and corruption sizzels – since everyone does the natural one and are often caught, and the few that do the other evil one and are rarely caught). Anyway you could not find anything reported on other than the scandel for months and people on both sides of the isle got into the action.
There are going to be plenty of people from both sides that get into the action this time. Simply saying sorry don’t mean smack. There will be republicans that testify plenty and will not apologize – and you know what if they tell the truth that is step one, if you want after that you can cry and say you are sorry.
redX @ 206
Man, I hear ya. Constantly amazed at how dog-eat-dog and rude people are when driving, or getting on the bus, or any other type of human interaction. Especially strange when the car cutting you off has a “United We Stand” bumper sticker.
I do think this kind of behaviour separates a Democrat (we’re all in this boat together) and anti-Democrat (gonna get what’s mine!) for the most part, but sadly, there are plenty of liberals that behave this way also.
All the more reason to make sure the DemocratIC Party (not the DLC kind) gets control and keeps it….indefinately.

You got it. Per the NYT article:
“Personal affection”!
So, where does that leave us? Is Bush’s appeal, homo-erotic?
Let’s get a grip. What the hell was affection provoking about Bush prior to November 2004? Per the Wikipedia, here’s what was known by then:
I’ve got to say that any sane person’s affection would have been severely dampened.
But, there’s an object lesson for progressives in Dowd’s disclosure.

Thanks Suzanne I will check it out.
Suzanne – you have mail.
This event was booked with 40 minutes of Scott speaking about his new book, Target:Iran and 20 minutes for questions.
We left the building three hours later!
What Scott said:
1. Every American should own a copy of the constitution AND read it
2. Yes call, write, email your congresscritter AND Senator but also do the same with every media outlet voicing opposition to bombing Iran and push for diplomatic solutions.
And that Scottsdale AZ is 7-10 years from a Nuclear program just like Iran.
It takes 3000 centrifuges working continuously for a year to obtain enough fissile material for a single weapon. Iran has around 160 centrifuges and they have yet to get one to work correctly…. he uses sound effects to show how they pop when they fail.

In their minds they will become assistants to the emperor. You and I know better.
IMHO, Bush and his associates have been positioning themselves for a coup. That doesn’t mean that they intend to carry it out, but …
* They’ve constructed massive detention centers.
* They’ve snuck in legislation to nationalize each state’s National Guard.
* They’ve set the U.S. Attorneys to harassing the GOP’s political opponents.
* Fundamenalist ministers as Zampolit.
The list goes on ad nausium. These bastards intend to overthrow the Constitution, if necessary, to retain their power. Unfortunately, it’s dangerous to believe otherwise.
I’d like to believe that all of the dangerous people, like Blackwater, have realized that Bush has fucked up everything he has attempted. So throwing in with him in a coup attempt against the U.S. Constitution of the United States would be suicide. Alas, Bush and his associates are fucking crazy. We can’t count on them for any rational thought. Rather we have to hope that there is enough left of the uniformed military to defeat them, and that BushCo realizes that, and doesn’t try anything absurd.
katymine – Thanks for sharing great stuff re Ritter and Edwards… you are everywhere.
You know what lolo? I am glad that cancer is front and stage now. WHY? Because in 1972 Richard Nixon said “we will have a war on cancer” At that time 1 in 10 women died of breast cancer. My mother died in 1974 at the age of 37. Today 1/8 women die of breast canser. We haven’t done anything about this disease.
Ah…Eureka Springs, I really have no social life… or maybe that is my social life!
Great year… Able to meet Amb. Wilson, Larry Johnson, John Dean and now Scott Ritter. Plus Christy, Jane and Pach!..
Wigwam – So many folks inside Blackwater et. al. or the military have been sitting on pins and needles, shooting first no questions later, conducting or witnessing torture for years on end now… If we regain Habeas and end torture even many spooks will not have a job… Who is going to hire them (other goverments)? Will they be able to deal with so called regular life?
The movie Falling Down will be like a comic book.

Isn’t that the truth!
Those who regret for their support of Bush are cannot be redeemed with a simple “I’m sorry”. Redemption is a myth. Every act has its consequence and there is no redemptor to forgive one’s acts and make everything good again. Karma does not forget or forgive.

IIRC, I was told that the first public school system cam about because Bismarck realized that a peace time army with nothing to do is a very dangerous thing. So he put them to work teaching kids.
Similarly, the Romans would let none of their own armies south of the rubicon except the Praetorian Guard , because they understood how dangerous an army is to a republic. Unfortunately, the Praetorian Guard was no match for Caesar’s army.
We are live in dangerous times.
Helen, I am not sure what you mean. I started reading FDL before the Shooter got his nickname and it kept me because it actually DID things. Little things that became big like the Rubber Stamp and the Crashing the Gate events. I did both and really enjoyed the youtubes seeing maybe one of My stamps being used on the floor of the house.
5 minutes a day… can reap really big things because if we All did 5 minutes a day, the collective time would be astounding. Isn’t our Republic worth saving for 5 minutes?

Mr. Dowd’s epiphany represents a moralproblem I have faced for some time now, chiefly “Do we welcome back into the fold or indeed even recognize “reformed” Republicans and enablers and abettors of this criminal enterprise otherwise known as the GOP?” The damage they have done is immense and ongoing. Is there a point beyond which forgiveness is impossible? I think so, and it saddens me greatly to say it. To the likes of Mr. Dowd I say “Indeed you were wrong, you are correct to have noticed that you were wrong, but you still must eat sh*t and die.

another thing about the blackwater boys:
how many of them just might be homocidal wackos with a short fuse? they’ve been doing dirty deeds all over iraq and they haven’t been doing them dirt cheap. it won’t take them long to find something akin to their iraq exploits to indulge in where ever they might end up. the taste of blood and the smell of cordite lasts long in the memory.

This is some very dangerous stuff that we face. The neocons have spent so much time fighting their vision of communism that they have come to resemble it. Helen: my daughter in law died of cancer four years ago. she was 36. my belief is that we will not make significant progress in dealing with cancer until we change the direction of human activity, clean up the environment and change how the food industry operates. we can find all sorts of drugs and treatments but unless we are able to change the way the world is and the direction it is going cancer will continue to pursue us relentlessly. cancer is nature’s way of letting us know that we are wrecking our ecosystem and acting like self-destructive idiots.

Possible Mortgage FRAUD by Lenders (NDE, CFC) – CRACK DEALER BUSINESS MODEL!
Sorry, they’re his caps. But the point about suitability, and the violation of no asset-based lending standards that are implicit in the story, is serious. The damage to homeowners and other bagholders that is just beginning to be seen was entirely predictable, even down to a pretty good time frame. And, with the possible exception of the AR market from which I haven’t noticed a lot of news lately, all of those regions where the eight were assigned both may have the most damage, and the highest location of implicated firms.

How could the Dems – even as a minority party? – fail to filibuster Federal funding of a private army and air force on US soil?
Blackwater needs to be subpenoaed after all why does the U.S Army need help from Mercs because they work cheaper? they are better than our Army? or because they are willing to do stuff our army won’t! Stuff like War Crimes. Now some of the blackwater familes are suing blackwater if the Dems pass a law giving the blackwater familes the same benefits as army widows a lot of these blackwater folks will sing. And/Or we could do a South Africa style truth commission, Amnesty but only for the things you confess to if you forget, leave something out etc then you can get prosecuted for that. The benefit is we get all the dirt REAL FAST the GOP takes a public relations beating and we build public support for banning Merc Armies in America. No Brownshirts for bushie!

The Bushies’ cruelty is truly evil.
And the Nuremberg trials justly meted out public hangings for wars of aggression.
But universal human rights forbid* the death penalty even for crimes against human rights and international law.
I don’t wish to defeat the Bushies and megacorps in order to become them.
As one among millions, I work to defeat them politically in order to destroy their power.
I’m working to stop murder, not to draw up the death lists.

regarding Matthew Dowd:
bad faith. that sums it up for me.
Matt, being sorry you enabled Fuckwad is good. however, talking about kharma and “re-establishing a level of gentleness in the world” does not ring true. kharma has bitten you in the arse. talk to the Iraqi people about gentleness. gentleness is what you do with your children, the weak, and the down-trodden. it has nothing to do with American politics except as regards the aforementioned.
Matt, you’ve come late to the party after being very ungentle for years. i say, Matt, you’re forgiven, but you have to go to the back of the line, and it’s a long one. meanwhile, see what good deeds you can do, one at a time, person to person, maybe in Africa or South America, Iraq or Afghanistan.
Republican political operatives are not exactly cool these days. it doesn’t look good on your CV, and with good reason. having Al Qaeda sleeper cells in the US is pretty worrying but having Neocon/Republican sleeper cells in such vast quantities is actually a lot worse, to say nothing of the ones in all branches of governmental bureaucracy and the so-called “think tanks”. my God, the “think tanks”, and the punditocracy, and the MSM. these people are not ready to make nice. James Dobson, anyone? Newt Gingrich? That silly woman that headed the GSA? our “bite-the-tops-off-of-animals” rapper KKKKarl? therefore to speak of restoring a level of “gentleness” in the world is one of the most absurd fantasies anyone might scrape up.
special pointer: if you think you’re expecting to be accepted back into the Democratic fold don’t. ever. blame Bill Clinton (whatever his faults) for your disasterous pact with Fuckwad.
so,Matt, keep taking showers, ’cause, at the moment you smell too much like Joe Lieberman. but i forgive you ….
and, wait at least until 2012, or better yet ‘16 before you start giving your opinions about democratic candidates above the level of county commissioner, and don’t even do that until Howard Dean OK’s it.

RWAs don’t want power themselves, but they do want to be close to it–unless they’re a so-called social dominator, too–then they want to run things, usually by scaring the piss out of all their followers.
Without a leader they recognize as one of them, they’re rather aimless and undirected, but, put a demagogue in front of them and they’re champing at the bit to be in service to the cause–and to be scared witless by same–because they want a strong leader to protect them and confirm their world view.

It certainly would be most helpful and instructive if, instead of wringing his hands, Mr. Dowd ponied up some internal memos that would make painfully clear exactly what sort of people are running the Executive Branch.

Yes, atonement. Demonstration of penance. (Mornin’ back at ya, Marion.)
Mornin’.
A dear friend, 93 years old, former headmaster of a private day school asked at our visit to his home in Vermont this summer, “How does that guy sleep at night?”, referring to Bush, of course. I told him I didn’t know. But the bigger question is, how do all of those who supported Bush sleep at night? I wonder if they sleep soundly? I wonder if they are at all remorseful? Some probably, like Mr. Dowd, are. For many, I suspect, they have no remorse. Humanity escapes them. I guess history is replete with the complicity of murderers.

When it comes to non-responsibility…I’m hearing this am our very Pres. talking to the Iranians about their aggression. Aside from the pot calling the kettle black on aggression, I am wondering if there is any way that we can have a different spokesperson. Our image could improve instantly if the village idiot malaprop were not speaking for the American people. Leave him to screw up his war, rather than the language for now. Is there someone to send in who knows the language, human sensibilities, and something about the global relationship. Let the Pres. go back to his pet goat. Maybe they get along.

Oh, rigggghhhht, Mr. Dowd. It’s all fun and games until someone loses a son.
Let me take a guess: You were dislliusioned quite some time ago. After all, you were Bush’s chief political strategist. But you kept your mouth shut because the money and prestige were good. But now, they have gone too far. Even your shrunken conscience has it’s limits. So, you’ve grown, like the Grinch. But you kbew damn well that if you came forward before now and presented the evidence of the rotten heart of the Bush-Cheney-Rove machine, your career would be over. They *will* smear you, Mr. Dowd. You will be blacklisted.
Your best hope is to come clean. Come completely clean. Go to one of the few reputable journalists that are left and give him all of the evidence you have. Emails, Documents, phone call recordings.
Then, apologize to the people who wouldn’t compromise their principles. You know, the people who thought the Iraq war was a catastrophe waiting to happen, the people who were concerned over voting irregularities in FL and OH, the people who were angry and shocked by the destruction of NOLA, the people who have been called weakling, traitorous liberals at every trun by the minions of the right on talk radio. Apologize to the people, like myself, who have lost their entire families to the mindless repetition of lies and deception perpetrated by you and your droogs in the Bush political chop-shop.
When you have told the 30% who still support Bush that you deliberately lied to them to get their support, then you will be on your way to making amends.
It’s a hard thing to do to right a gigantic wrong that has broken out military and severely undermined the foundations of our government.
But there are no shortcuts.
Mr. Dowd, after you follow Goldberry’s suggestions, you should then go to Rep. Waxman and volunteer to testify until hell freezes over or he has asked every question he can think of.
No, it won’t be fun, but as Elizabeth Edwards has pointed out, after you lose a child, you have already lived thru the worst day of your life. Welcome back to the human race.

I cannot agree with giving Blackwater widows the same benefits as Army widows. Their spouses were not in the Army. They got paid 4 to 5 times what the soldiers got paid and they had the best protective gear when the Army (and National Guard) did not. That hasn’t changed. They signed on for the quick buck and the power. If they want something more, it should come from Blackwater, not the American taxpayer who already paid top dollar to Blackwater that should have gone to the Army and National Guard.
Well, Well, Matthew Dowd wants to be a Dem again? Could this relate to which team will be winning and in need of high paid campaign strategist.

Well, Blair did announce his pullout of troops the same week as it was announced that Prince Harry was going over there to be stationed, hey, right there where the pullout was.
Just think — if they could call up George P. a few years early…
Dowd did his job – he got us to the jump-off point. AIPAC has put its foot down, GOP & Dems agree; we’re off to Iran!
I think you raise an interesting point about Dowd’s sophistication in trying to “redeem” himself. If I were to place a cynical hat on, I’d say he is playing for the long term gain. He sees the extreme right of the R-party is going down; he sees he played a significant role. But he also sees the R-party is going to go nowhere without the essential Fundamentalist Christian wing who are presently dividing–the outcome of that division is unclear. There are (believe it or not) “moderating” influences developing in it and I think Dowd sees them as the future. He knows the R-party is going to self-destruct or in some way rehabilitate itself by denouncing the Cheney-Bush transgressions. I’d say Mr. Dowd’s “testimony” is directed to the more forgiving moderates in the Christian Right who are on the rise, and he wants to play with them now. Given the way Dems are cutting him no slack (other than giving him air time to recant), he probably figures some R’s in the future might need his expertise to consolidate power within the remnants of the R’s.
Dowd did his job – he got us to the jump-off point. AIPAC has put its foot down GOP & Dems agree, we’re off to Iran!
Dowd also has a long interview posted at Frontline (PBS) under the heading of Karl Rove-Architect of… the transcript of his interview is long and interesting if you want insight on the Dowd before (or even as he was) disillusioned with Gnarly Karly.

To me, the essential point of the Dowd story is that it once again proves the eternal and overriding principle of the right wing elite, that other people’s children can be sacrificed with impunity and without a moment’s regret for any reason or for no reason, because they just don’t count as real human beings, but when one of these fascist fuckers is forced to consider the consequences of the wars they start as including that THEIR precious offspring might be endangered, then all their chest-puffing and nationalistic priorities go straight out the window because, don’t you know, their children are the real people who count. The soullessness of this pattern is the most eternally damning thing I see about these warmongers, and I pray they will all burn in hell forever. And their pampered, elitist children right alongside them. My sympathy and pity are reserved for the powerless pawns of these people, who suffer and get no benefit for their sacrifices. I won’t ever forgive those who have been instrumental in policies that killed thousands upon thousands of innocents and other people’s children. And I would advise other readers that we should be unrelentingly ferocious in insisting that these people suffer as much as possible, so there will be a clear historical precedent that deters their ilk in the future.
This guy made me think of the tv special on Charles Manson and all of his women followers. As a human, you do feel sorry for them 35 years later, but they aligned themselves with evil at the time of the crime. So Mr. Dowd may want our forgiveness now, but think of the long-term effect on all the families his ill-placed support hath wrought. Sorry dude….burn in hell with your other former pals.
Cannnot anyone in dealing with Bush and all the flakes around him, just ignore what cannot be changed and focus on what can be changed. So much anger is directed towards Bush and the garbage he has developed (Dowd just another)and so much energy is wasted. What needs to be focused on is keeping the likes of the Clintons, Gores, Kerry types out of power in the next presidential election and focusing on finding the positive.
I would vote for Gore in a heartbeat.
