Matthew Dowd, photo from PBS.
Personal responsibility? Not much. Cry me a bloody (Tigris) river (emphasis added):
AUSTIN, Tex., March 29 — In 1999, Matthew Dowd became a symbol of George W. Bush’s early success at positioning himself as a Republican with Democratic appeal.
A top strategist for the Texas Democrats who was disappointed by the Bill Clinton years, Mr. Dowd was impressed by the pledge of Mr. Bush, then governor of Texas, to bring a spirit of cooperation to Washington. He switched parties, joined Mr. Bush’s political brain trust and dedicated the next six years to getting him to the Oval Office and keeping him there. In 2004, he was appointed the president’s chief campaign strategist.
Looking back, Mr. Dowd now says his faith in Mr. Bush was misplaced.
[snip]
He criticized the president as failing to call the nation to a shared sense of sacrifice at a time of war, failing to reach across the political divide to build consensus and ignoring the will of the people on Iraq. He said he believed the president had not moved aggressively enough to hold anyone accountable for the abuses at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, and that Mr. Bush still approached governing with a “my way or the highway” mentality reinforced by a shrinking circle of trusted aides.
[snip]
He said his decision to step forward had not come easily. But, he said, his disappointment in Mr. Bush’s presidency is so great that he feels a sense of duty to go public given his role in helping Mr. Bush gain and keep power.
Mr. Dowd, a crucial part of a team that cast Senator John Kerry as a flip-flopper who could not be trusted with national security during wartime, said he had even written but never submitted an op-ed article titled “Kerry Was Right,” arguing that Mr. Kerry, a Massachusetts Democrat and 2004 presidential candidate, was correct in calling last year for a withdrawal from Iraq.
“I’m a big believer that in part what we’re called to do — to me, by God; other people call it karma — is to restore balance when things didn’t turn out the way they should have,” Mr. Dowd said. “Just being quiet is not an option when I was so publicly advocating an election.”
[snip]
Mr. Dowd, 45, said he hoped in part that by coming forward he would be able to get a message through to a presidential inner sanctum that he views as increasingly isolated. But, he said, he holds out no great hope. He acknowledges that he has not had a conversation with the president.
[snip]
Mr. Dowd does not seem prepared to put his views to work in 2008. The only candidate who appeals to him, he said, is Senator Barack Obama, Democrat of Illinois, because of what Mr. Dowd called his message of unity. But, he said, “I wouldn’t be surprised if I wasn’t walking around in Africa or South America doing something that was like mission work.”
He added, “I do feel a calling of trying to re-establish a level of gentleness in the world.”
Not so fast. You can't say you want to "restore balance" and say you want all politcal conflict to go away while you go on walkabout for some quality time with your mid-life existential crisis. Your psychodramas helped to shit the bed, now get over yourself and join the fight - yes, the fight - to undo what you've done. Gentleness, my ass. Grow up and take some responsibility, and stop pretending nice rhetoric and kumbayah will make anything right again. It won't. (Cliff Schecter agrees.)
The people you joined up with have had the very agenda you abetted since at least the days of Nixon, and unless we rid our public life of them, they'll be back again. You were an insider. Start talking about what you know. Grab your knife and start the stabbing. That's how you can restore some balance, wanker. And if this is any evidence of your newfound moral compass, I'd say it's not quite pointing true north, now, is it ? (H/T to Julia from Sisyphus Shrugged, via email. She has even more here. Oh, and you didn't think digby could leave this alone, did you?)
All these people know how to do is evade responsibility. Next exhibit, Barbara Comstock protege, Monica Goodling (emphasis added):
After graduating in 1999, Goodling landed a job at the D.C. headquarters of the Republican National Committee just as the 2000 Bush-Cheney campaign was ramping up. Goodling’s position put her inside the newly created war room for political opposition research. There, she worked alongside a crew of party faithful who would later shepherd her through the ranks at Justice.
Among Goodling’s close associates were Barbara Comstock, head of opposition research for the RNC and later the chief spokeswoman for Ashcroft; Griffin, Comstock’s deputy, whom Goodling would later help to win the interim appointment to replace one of the eight ousted U.S. attorneys in Arkansas; and Mark Corallo, who in 2003 took the helm of the Justice Department’s Public Affairs Office after Comstock.
Goodling quickly won Comstock’s trust for her hard work and talent for digging up information on tort litigation and judicial nominations. And when Griffin left in 2001, Goodling became Comstock’s deputy. They helped prepare Ashcroft and Theodore Olson for their confirmation hearings to be attorney general and solicitor general, respectively.
When Comstock became Ashcroft’s spokeswoman in 2002, she brought Goodling along as her deputy. Goodling stayed for three years. In no time, Goodling became “indispensable” to the office, says Corallo, who became Ashcroft’s spokesman in 2003. “I have never known anybody that works harder or does better work than her.”
Of course, regular readers of FDL will recognize Comstock as the propaganda flack for all things Scooter Libby. We kept hearing that plaintive whine justifying Goodling's 5th Amendment plea (before even being called to testify before Congress), "Look what happened to Scooter Libby!" Anyone want to hazard a guess where that line came from, or who among Goodling's past mentors may have advised her to take the 5th rather than face questions under oath about possible crimes committed?
Eyes on your own paper, please! Hey Hiatt, you paying attention?!
Goodling has taken one route to evade (for the time being) responsibility, but Dowd has taken another route, a more sophisticated one.
On the right wing, Mr. Dowd, all you have to do is kiss Jesus' James Dobson's ass in Macy's window and all is forgiven, like it never happened. "All that's left," Dobson says, "is our friendship."
On the left, we actually demand and expect longstanding community reparation, along with a full acceptance of responsibility. If John Dean or David Brock can do it, you can, too.
But you can't do it cruising the beaches of Granger Bay with a pina colada in one hand, a bible in the other and a pocketful of divorcee's condoms stashed in a sandy blanket with your Internet viagra and Amway sunblock.

woo-hoo!
one California drought breaks.
(and now for the pleasure of reading your post, Pach)
Go Kirk..
Oh and Fitz!
Evening, Pach.
Evenin’, nite owls.
This got EPU’d…
Just watched an interview Al Gore did on tv in Sweden. The host wished him a happy birthday.
She asked him about running for president, and if he might be able to accomplish more with regard to the global warming issue if he were president.
Al Gore: “I don’t have any plans to be a candidate for president again. I haven’t completely ruled out going back into politics at some point in my life. But the reason I don’t ever expect to be a candidate again is partrly because I’ve fallen out of love with politics, and I have less patience for some of the aspects of the politicsl system. But also because the way the political dialog is conducted over these 30 second TV commercials now, there is less of a chance to deal in depth with the biggest crisis that we have to face–this climate crisis.”
Dowd’s got skin in the game now (his son’s in Iraq) and all his assumptions have come crumbling down. Fundamentally, these are dishonest people, and their dishonesty must be exposed. I do not welcome Mr. Dowd back to the Democratic Party — there must be a neutral zone of Purgatory, especially for someone who left our party in 1999 to support his governor’s bid for the White House.
Desolation Row.
TeddySanFran @ 8
The Connecticut For Lieberman Party has some room to grow.
Dowd’s hiding behind his kid to make a craven, calculated political switchback.
Check out those Sisyphus Shrugs links. He has a history of this.
I believe this “conversion” like I believe frontruners are true fans.
Mr. Dowd is a fool.
And yet he says “I like the guy”. Maybe that was his first mistake and then the others were just part of the snowball.
Pachacutec @ 9
Dylan’s still got it goin’ on after all these years.
Evenin’ Pach!
Pachacutec @ 11
I noticed his praise for moderation and civility, which makes me think he wants to sucker the Democrats into following the DLC/Third Way/triangulation/Broderism bullshit.
Maybe Mr. Dowd needs to grow some “Big Kahunas” and undo the damage that was done…
I’ll repeat my earlier criticism of Dowd. I’m really glad he’s finally come around, but he’s a bit late to the party, and none of the things he’s criticising Bush for are things that we didn’t already know at the 2004 election. As far as I’m concerned, he’s got six years of penance to do.
This is my post from HuffPo earlier this evening on Dowd:
Sorry Dowd, too little, too late…It’s going to take far more than a little mea culpa like this to rehabilitate yourself. Too bad you couldn’t invision the impact of your words BEFORE your son got sent over to Iraq. Of course, why do I think you were probably one of those making fun of Cindy Sheehan? I hope, for the sake of your ex-wife, that your son returns safely.
To add since Ms Goodling was not on HuffPo:
As far as Ms Goodling is concerned, I rather doubt that she will do anything even as mild as Dowd as she seems like a total tru believer. Although I would still like to know who’s paying her legal fees. A partner at AkinGump does not come cheap…
Frank Probst @ 17
Yeah, my main reaction while reading that was, “How the FUCK could you not have noticed???”
TeddySanFran @ 8
He could go on a mission right where it counts.
I bet Natasha is advising Monica. I can hardly wait to see this played out. Barbara Comstock OMFG
Dowd. Dowd. I remember this guy. He went over to the other side. I hated him for it then. But forgot, over the years, that he existed. What a prick. Sleep in the bed you made buddy.
Per http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04.....8lP6hOwPer
Looking back, Mr. Dowd now says his faith in Mr. Bush was misplaced.
And now he’s impressed by Obama!
I was thinking the same thing, lolo. Did Big Bad Barbara get Monica *doncha just love the karma of that name* the expert hi priced lawyer?
I’m tired of the “I like the guy” defense, too. He’s an asshole. If you like him anyway, then you should say, “He’s an asshole, but I like him anyway.” I have a few friends who fall into this category. And I wouldn’t want any of them to be President. He might have been okay as the 8th grade class president, but not as the leader of our nation.
This man Dowd was converted (back) to Republicanism (as Texas became Republican) by his friend and co-instructor, Karl Rove. Anyone who would follow Karl Rove into the majority state party and then abandon Bush now can only be called the worst kind of craven opportunist. Perhaps there’s a slot for him at Unity08? I bet he and Marshall Wittman could have a hell of a circle jerk.
Frank Probst @ 25
Damn right!
Wigwam @

And now he’s impressed by Obama!
What a difference a day makes…..
I wonder what tomorrow’s revelation will be for Mr. Dowd….
(really don’t trust that guy)
Dowd is tlaking about bridging a political divide that he helped foster. IF he came back to the Democratic Party he would be a tepid conservative Demo searching for his next Republican muse.
I hope his son makes it back undamaged but unfortunately he helped damage the children of many others.
Is this guy related to MoDo?
I know the DLC supported Bush attacking Iraq. But does any one know where this awful little group stands on this issue today?
Suzanne @ 24
There’s a problem with Monica having a high-priced lawyer as a federal employee, unless she’s paying for it her own damn self, though. Has anyone checked Monica’s employment status at DoJ?
I love that her name is Monica.
Now that they’ve lost the majority, some of the little rats long for “kinder, gentler” treatment than they gave. I just hope Conyers and Waxman don’t run out of handcuffs.
Suzanne @ 30
Not sure, but we can always call him MaDo.
Teddy, I think it was over at Muckracker (?) that I read she was using up her accrued leave time with expectations of returning to her normal duties at an unspecified date.
TeddySanFran @ 26
watch him go to work for Obama and work on the double secret Spy on the Qt bs and be a saboteur
Visiting my family right after the 2000 election - ie, the settlement of Bush vs. Gore by the Supremes, I said “Who knows, we may come to love Bush.”
By the time he was ratcheting up rhetoric after the US Navy reconnaissance plane’s forced landing on Hainan Island, I realized falling in love with W wasn’t in my future. Even after 9/11 and the seeming success in Afghanistan, there was just way too much negative info on Bush’s overall policy direction coming out for me to feel he was going to bring people together.
Matthew Dowd has a pretty dismal record, and he’s got a lot to learn and a lot to admit to before I’m going to give him more than a civil handshake.
Dowd can visit all his buddies in the Federal Pen — Scooter, KKKarl, Kyle, and Monica.
TeddySanFran @ 32
on leave, but still employed
The smell of bullcrap on a Friday dump-day!
“More US Military Casualties than Iraqis”b at a time the Iraqi military is supposed to be taking the leading role in the “surge”.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/200.....2iclHMWM0F
Imagine the casualties if the Americans were going in first? Yep! Tell McCain how great things are going!
From the NYT article:
um…
“education and immigration?”
he helped sell the occupations, continue the most corrupt and criminal administration in our history, and slime Kerry.
now he’s blaming the target of his affection and loyalty for his mistakes that cost hundreds of thousands of lives, our reputation and so much more???
I am glad he’s seen the light for whatever reason. Too little, too late to get all the blood off his hands, imho. Hope it helps to bring bushco down in the eyes of those creatures that still believe in him, but holy smoke.
Suzanne @ 35
Well, then she better have boatloads of accrued leave, cuz she’s not returning anywhere anytime soon.
lolo @ 36
Ah, good point. There is alot of precedent for political operatives like this bozo making these kinds of moves. Any Obama people out there…don’t be fooled! These kind of things don’t go unnoticed anymore thanks to places like FDL. You don’t want to make the us unhappy now do you?
I get very uncomfortable when these supposedly heterosexual men (Tweety, Dowd) get all gooey about other men (”fall in love like that”) in the political sphere, especially W.
Matt in AZ, yep, he can have the Chuck Colson role.
TeddySanFran @ 44
They want the John Wayne type to smooth out the rough spots in their visions of life. They need a figure they can be submissive to.
TeddySanFran @ 44
I think it’s really weird and it makes me uncomfortable, too.
bizarro.
I discovered a few months ago that a man that I was in high school with is a partner at Akin Gump. I’m thinking I might have to send him an e-mail and ask (just for sh*ts and grins of course) what the going rate per hour is for a partner there
He didn’t fall in love with Bush, he fell in love with Bu$h. And with the Dems on the rise, it’s the same love all over again.
DC/K Street Elites.
Well, I’m delighted to learn about Goodling’s Comstock connection. The more links between the current scandals and convicted felon and former SAO Irve Libby, the better.
bonkers @ 43
Yeah, if he doesn’t spill all and come clean then he is full of crap. He better bring it home or he is toast.
So, Dowd was sooooo disappointed with Clinton he “like fell in love with George Bush.” What an Idiot!!!!!!!
Pachacutec @ 49
OMG, Pach! Are you suggesting he is only in it for the $$’s!
I would say the $$’s and the POWER.

Brought to Bush by Rove, who has spoken of a similarly creepy swoon when first meeting the BoyKing, all manly in his flight jacket and cowboy boots…
OT (sorta):
They’re selling postcards of the hanging
They’re painting the passports brown
The beauty parlor is filled with sailors
The circus is in town
Here comes the blind commissioner
They’ve got him in a trance
One hand is tied to the tight-rope walker
The other is in his pants
And the riot squad they’re restless
They need somewhere to go
As Lady and I look out tonight
From Desolation Row.
This man personally contributed to damaging the world. His poor judgment played a signifant role in damaging our democracy.
I believe in redemption, but it doesn’t come easy. We all make mistakes, sometimes HUGE mistakes. When you make a mistake you find a way to make things better. You certainly don’t make things better by running away from the mess you’ve made and the people you’ve harmed. I’m glad he admitted his role in the destruction, but he needs to suck it up and figure out a way to make things better here where he screwed things up. He can’t change what happened, but he can stand up and deal with the fallout. A big part of making things better would be to ensure that the others involved face their responsibilty too.
TeddySanFran @ 44I get very uncomfortable when these supposedly heterosexual men (Tweety, Dowd) get all gooey about other men (”fall in love like that”) in the political sphere, especially W.
That was a really strange way to put it. And what do you mean especially W? Any further news on the Gannon/Guckert (sp) saga? Will Waxman get the secret service to release the visitor logs do you think?
Isn’t David Brock one of the Media Matters principals? Now *that’s* making amends.
My, my. I wondered which FireDog would fillet Mr. Dowd. Nicely done.
Dowd’s going to have to make a couple decades of mea culpas — I figure at least until he has a grandchild firmly ensconced in grade school.
Assuming he has grandchildren some day.
It’s going to take that long for us to undo the damage done by this administration.
Hm. If Waxman went the Ed*ard Teller route, he’d be “Henry *axman”. I kinda like it.
TeddySanFran @ 54
You know, I’m not so much creeped out by this as I am just completely dumbfounded by it. Even after several beers, it would take me well under twenty seconds to peg Bush as a halfwit phony. I would probably start introducing him to my friends as one of the guys Holden Caulfield couldn’t stop talking about. I just don’t get the attraction. I’d have an easier time comprehending, oh, Angelina Jolie dumping Brad Pitt for Henry Kissinger, and then raving about the sex.
Zee @ 56
Yes. Dowd must actively work to expose the machine he helped create to sunlight and Congressional investigation. He must, in fact, dedicate his life to this effort.
from the NYT article
I am sorry for his losses, but could it be that his rhetoric and his belief in bush could have somehow influenced his son to join and fight his daddy’s war? Could his wife have left him for not only the loss of one child, but also the possibility of losing now two and the loss of the husband she once knew?
Yet he still didn’t protest the war because of his “his continued personal affection”.
Frank Probst @ 61
Same here. All I see is an adult version of the standard smug, selfish, entitled, preening fratboy.
“When you fall in love like that,” he said, “and then you notice some things that don’t exactly go the way you thought, what do you do? Like in a relationship, you say ‘No no, no, it’ll be different.’”
Ah, a story just like every other abused
spousepartner. If he’d listened to something other than the sweet words of praise, he’d have been out of that relationship before it went to h*ll.Terry, when I say especially W, I mean what Frank sez: there’s just no way I can comprehend any attraction to the man, whether intellectual, emotional, or physical. He is utterly and completely repellent in all ways. But that’s just me.
Terry Olson @ 57
That was a really strange way to put it. And what do you mean especially W? Any further news on the Gannon/Guckert (sp) saga? Will Waxman get the secret service to release the visitor logs do you think?
they already have them. There posted at Dkos and Raw Story
Just a reminder — In a few minutes it will be April 1st on the East Coast. Happy April Fool’s Day to all you pups!
Pach wrote, ‘…You were an insider. Start talking about what you know. Grab your knife and start the stabbing. That’s how you can restore some balance, wanker…”
Ummmmm. Count me out on that knife and stabbing part.
Generating creative ideas, brainstorming solutions, raising money, supporting good candidates — count me in.
Acts of violence and destruction — count me out. Not interested. I leave that kind of sh*t to Barbara Comstock and Karl Rove.
Under no circumstances do I intend to act in a fashion that would put me in the company of those malignant, repellant hucksters.
As for Matthew Dowd, at least he has a conscience, which is more than I have ever been able to discern of Babs Comstock.
If he needs to go on Walkabout, he should take one. If it opens his eyes to the larger world, then it will be a good thing. With his skills, more wisdom and a stronger conscience, he could do some good in his life.
I’m not the most devout Christian, but the lesson of the Prodigal Son nevertheless does make sense to me. Why cast stones at a man grappling with the evil that he’s helped unleash on the planet? What point is there in that? How is that going to help solve global warming? How is that going to restore integrity to the DoJ?
Karl Rove would be incapable of such introspection, let alone the prospect of a Walkabout.
Godspeed to Mr. Dowd; he needs to heal himself. Then perhaps he can join the rest of us in seeking to heal a world that is deeply and profoundly troubled.
TeddySanFran @ 66
Not just you, Teddy.
TeddySanFran @ 66
No it’s not, Teddy.
Not by a long shot.

There is a story about a man asking JP Morgan (or some other big poobah) how much it costs to maintain his yacht, to which the Great Man said, “If you have to ask a question like that, you can’t afford a yacht.”
So with law firms. If you have to ask how much their rate is, you can’t afford them.

No, it’s me, too. I argue a similar point with an English friend of mine who finds Bush “very engaging” (in his words). My friend keeps up on US politics and is well aware of the pResident’s plummeting reputation, but he still likes the guy. I just don’t get it.

I’ve been perplexed by anyone, male (Dowd) or female (Michelle Bachmann), being in love with Shrub for one reason - you just know Shrub is terrible in bed. He’s such a awkward, juvenile clutz. I’m sure it’s like being with a nervous 16 year old first-timer….everytime! Shrub is bad at EVERYTHING he does. How would anyone find this sexy?

It gets to a point where you almost start to doubt your sanity, when you always hear him described in ways that are in absolute contradiction to what you perceive.
Like when he gives these incredibly awful press conferences which are embarrassing to watch, and then the media raves about how fucking masterful he was. It’s surreal.
Sorry mods, I may have just used one of the magic words :-(
All that love talk and the stuff about his personal life is inoculation. This guy is making a career move.
I don’t believe a word of it. If I’m wrong, he’ll prove me wrong by doing what Brock did, telling the story of Republican corruption from the inside. Brock’s written books about it. But I think Dowd is angling for new clients, nothing more.
One thing this story made me think of was a post I read a while back about Bush’s falling popularity. Despite what Dean Broder thinks, the poster argued that Bush has no where to go but down. Believing in Bush is like believing in Santa Claus. For a while, you think he’s the bomb. Then you start to think that maybe you got suckered, but you go through this phase of really really wanting to believe you were right about the guy. (This is where a lot of people were in the 2004 election, I’m afraid.) When you finally stop believing, it’s a huge letdown, but you can never go back to believing again.
