WASHINGTON (AP) — Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich equated bilingual education Saturday with “the language of living in a ghetto” and mocked requirements that ballots be printed in multiple languages.

“The government should quit mandating that various documents be printed in any one of 700 languages depending on who randomly shows up” to vote, said Gingrich, who is considering seeking the Republican presidential nomination in 2008. He made the comments in a speech to the National Federation of Republican Women.

“The American people believe English should be the official language of the government. … We should replace bilingual education with immersion in English so people learn the common language of the country and they learn the language of prosperity, not the language of living in a ghetto,” Gingrich said to cheers from the crowd of more than 100.

Besides being utterly clueless about what bilingual education DOES, maybe he should give the same speech in “Little Havana” in Miami.

As I recall Dean Andal, who supported the Republican Assembly candidate Gerry Machado, attacked the Democratic candidate for the post by accusing her of being unmarried and childless, and never having held a “real job”. Machado even attacked her for having cats!

I wonder if Andal will argue that he only wants the votes of those who are married, have children and don’t have cats…and that he doesn’t want the votes of people who have held jobs like Cathleen Galgiani, whom he accused of never having served in a “real job”!

“Prior to working in the Legislature, Cathleen spent eight years as a physical therapy aide at San Joaquin General Hospital and Dameron Hospital in San Joaquin County.”

And if Andal doesn’t believe that working in the legislature, either at the State or Federal level, constitutes a “real job” then why in the heck is he trying to get that “job”?

Isn’t that just saying that he intends to NOT work hard at it?

Just as Jerry said goodbye, Carol Shea-Porter called me on the phone to ask me to say thanks to everyone at FDL for all the support and love that’s been eminating from our community towards her. She’s about to go into a campaign meeting with her staff to set a pretty incredible goal. She wants to roll up a 20 point margin over Bradley next year. You gotta love that spirit!!
