(Video of Al Gore relaxing with his family before the start of the 2000 campaign's "gun lap")
I was originally going to post this on my own blog, but then I realized that I wanted Al to actually have some slim chance of reading it. So, Al, if you're out there…
Last week, I asked whether you could do more good for the environment inside the White House or out, and there was some speculation back on forth on whether you would be willing to run again under any circumstances. So this week I thought I would offer up some reasons why you should run:
- Image Is Everything. In 2000, most people thought of you as the class nerd, or maybe just Bill's sidekick. Now, in 2007, you're a rock star. You've made wry appearances on Saturday Night Live, and spoken out eloquently and powerfully, not just about the environment, but about the corrosive amorality of the Bush administration and the Republican party in general. Your passion is infectious, and your campaign would energize and inspire people in ways it never could in 2000.
- Environment. The climate change climate is changing. Partly through your own efforts, global warming is becoming a more and more mainstream idea, and it scares people. No other candidate can match your expertise or your unquestioned commitment on this subject. But it's not just global warming – the whole American political environment is changing in our favor now.
- Nader Was Wrong. Thanks to six years of unchecked Republican power, there are very few people willing to make the argument that there's no difference between the two parties. Compare the Clinton administration and the Bush administration, and I think it's possible to discover a few noticeable differences if you look closely enough.
- We've Got Your Back. In 2000, there was no liberal blogosphere to speak of (I think it was Bob Somerby and… umm… uhh… I'll have to get back to you), and the media gleefully spread catty Republican narratives without any check or challenge. They will undoubtedly try to do the same again, but this time we're going to call them on every lie, mischaracterization and snide remark. See, look, we've started already. Not only that, but i think you've carved out a strong enough identity for yourself that the frames of 2000 won't fit anymore. Indeed, the media's attempts to portray you as Fibber McEarthtones will probably damage their credibility more than yours.
- Good Chance. Unless Iraq magically transforms into a peaceful Jeffersonian democracy between now and mid-2008, America's dissatisfaction with Bush's endless parade of disasters will sink the Republican nominee, no matter who it is – and the most likely suspects all have serious baggage besides. The Democratic candidates all have their own drawbacks, which brings me to…
- We Need You. The atmosphere isn't all that's broken. Our next president must have the knowledge, experience, and skills to repair all the damage that the Republicans have wrought, and needs to inspire enough trust to be allowed to. It's going to be a rough first term, and the people will need to have confidence that the president knows what they're doing, even as the media and the Republicans insist that all of Bush's pigeons are really Democratic ones. Obama and Edwards don't have the experience, and Hillary is too polarizing. And the Republicans are, well, Republicans. But President Al Gore would fit the bill nicely. Also, I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure that you can't be Emperor Of The Moon unless you've been President Of The United States first. No Moon Worm for you!
- I'm Begging. No, seriously. And I think I speak for a whole bunch of other progressives who would love to see a sane, steady hand in the White House. As I suspect the comments here will prove.
One other teensy weensy little request: Please select a different running mate and campaign manager this time. Thank you in advance.

Run Al Run!!!!!!
Alright me!
dakine01 @ 0
That’s two!
that’s what I’m talking about!
President Gore! We and the rest of the world need you.
I’ll take this one … YES!
The Gore, the merrier.
… and might I add it isn’t as though you’ve never won the presidential election before.
I saw this a while ago and loved it then. I love it more now. Mayyyybe, mayyyyybe, we can get a “real” president. I’ll keep praying. Thanks Al!
Peace!
PeeJ @ 8
Yeah, I knew I had to use that video unless I could find one of Al actually running. It was the first time I ever saw him unscripted, and I thought he was totally charming and likable. Unlike the smirking fratboy I was *supposed* to like.
Please, President Gore…listen to the voice of the people!
And excellent post, Eli!
I second that! (Or is it third? or whatever?).
Just watching the wingnuts’ heads simultaneously explode would be worth the price of admission. Getting an intelligent, progressive President is icing on the cake.
Re-elect Gore ‘08
You can get the button as a premium from Buzzflash.com
I cry when I watch Al and think what could have been. Really.
If he runs, I’m in. But YES, no more running mates like (I can’t even make myself type his name).
Gore in 2008. Accept no substitutes.
Eli says:
ditto!
C’mon Al– the planet needs you roaring and your leadership and your condemnation of bushco’s wanton destruction of same planet and hundreds of thousands of people!
You can do it!
News Grinder @ 13
My girlfriend’s a Green, and *still* takes the Nader view that they’re all the same so what difference does it make… but she’d vote for Gore in a heartbeat.
OT– cspan 2 is carrying the Radio and Television Correspondents Dinner right now.
Jib Jab up.
hilarious.
cain’t wait for boosh.
I eighteenth that!
Meanwhile, it turns out that McCain considered bolting to the Democratic party in 2001…

I bet that Rich Little is taking no prisoners.
Re-elect Gore in 2008.
And if Donna Brasile or Bob Shrum or any other DLC hacks offer to work for your campaign…..
tell them to stick it where the sun don’t shine!
News Grinder @ 14
Fear not; last I heard, He Who Is Unspeakable is still miffed at Gore for endorsing Howard Dean in December of 2003. ;-)
*xyz @ 19
The Connecticut For Lieberman Party can always use more members…
Dare to dream. A friend mentioned this week that he couldn’t imagine how bad things would be now had Gore been elected.
After five minutes of my condesending sermon, including the hint that Fox perhaps isn’t the best place to get your news, he cried uncle and switched the topic to home remodeling. I still got it, TeddySan!
Please run and take Clark with you.
angie @ 18
THANK YOU.
…and please, Al, be true to yourself…
Even my wingnut brother-in-law said he would vote for Gore because of his environmental platform. If he would vote for Gore, then I could only imagine how many other more moderate Republicans and independents he’ll get.
Amen – for a man who understands and values diplomacy and common sense.
yes.

Wow. You’re friends with Exxon exxecutives?
This was going to be EPU’ed so with apologies I’ll post it here.

Eli @ 31
(Or al Qaeda recruiters? I mean, I know we’re supposed to be in league with them and everything, but that’s going a bit far…)
Eli,
Amen. I’m in.
don’t wait for Al to announce, find out what the nominating laws are in your state, get some nominating petitions and put him on the priamry ballot in your state.
blue @ 29
that’s an interesting point. could be a huge blowback.
Jeez. Thoughts of what might have been.
Just imagine how different things might be now had Sandra Day ruled the other way.
Gore w/ Obama, Edwards or Feingold and I’d be jazzed.
Why isn’t Laura sitting with GWB tonight?
Watch this space. I’m going to do something along those lines in the next few days. (Hint: A million or so people would still be alive, for one thing.)
Urban Pirate @ 39
Clark and Feingold would probably be my first choices. Obama might be good, but I have a suspicion he would never settle for second billing.
It would be great to get Tom Swan on the team. And a few of the other’s that worked for Ned too. There would be a wealth of great talent that would come out of the woodwork to help Al.
Gore / Kuchinich 08!!!
no? okay then
Gore/ Feingold 08 !!!
no? okay then
Gore/ Edwards 08 !!!

OT Jacqrat- Hey! Just saw your shout out in the last thread. Been doing day job stuff, so I missed it.
Hey- to you! Thank you thank you thank you again for all of the awesome work you did for Blue America and BA candidates for 2006, and for what you continue to do.
xxxooo from me.
p.s. AND, with everything else you are doing now for BA, it’s no wonder you don’t have time to type hugely long comments at FDL!!!
p.s.s. I would vote for Gore.
Phoenix Woman @ 52
Hopefully *someone* can…
President Gore.
OT but I doubt that this has received much attention. Some original reporting from the Annapolis Capital
In fact, State’s Attorney Frank R. Weathersbee said yesterday, that’s completely wrong.
Because the crime involved only fondling, not a sexual act, and because it was not violent, the man would not be subject to the mandatory minimum that Maryland lawmakers tightened Monday night by eliminating parole for some offenders.
Indeed, the law as written doesn’t cover the vast majority of sex offenses actually prosecuted in the county, so Mr. Weathersbee said people shouldn’t expect to see many long sentences.
“It’s going to be almost no cases that we deal with,” he said of the law, which mandates minimum sentences of five years for some offenders and 25 years for others.
A Fox News spokesman said yesterday that he would look into the questions about the show’s accuracy, but he didn’t return a call by deadline this morning.
Yeah, accuracy…. Fox News cares accuracy. Youbetcha.
mediawhoresonline too. still in my favorites in hopes that someday…
Eli – I’v seen the vid before – last year, I think. Makes me happy and very sad at the same time. An actual mind at work, some wisdom, a family legacy to be proud of, and experience. Now, more than ever.
Great post.
Al Gore: Elect him president – AGAIN!
newtonusr @ 66
Thanks. It makes me feel the same way. I wish people could have seen *that* Al Gore during the campaign.
angie @ 58
I’m not watching, is she really not there?
Maybe all this chatter of Chimpy being back on the sauce and her sleeping at the Mayflower is substantive.
Where’s Michael Isikoff. What, not interested in a witch-hunt Mikey?
Memories of Colbert – … you know, fiction.
Oh, and Eli! Great post. But I gotta get back to writing an exam. Sigh.
“run, al, run”
was, of course, the sarcastic comment, in 2004, of the ny times irish-fish-wife columnist maureen dowd’s.
dowd didn’t know her ass from a hole in the ground on this or most other issues she screeches about.
her specialty was endlessly berating hillary clinton regarding clinton’s marriage in the editorial pages of the times – though dowd herself had never been married, or, one supposes, had a child and family – rather like priests opining about birth control.
once the clintons were gone, dowd seemed paralyzed to write eloquently about george bush or the innumerable “bad” (her specialty, after all, was “bad” behavior) boys and girls who have populated the bush administration.
it should come as no surprise that her mentor at the ny times was william safire, that moral hunchback, who, while working for the distinguished american vice-pres spiro agnew, wrote his (safire’s) own epitaph -a “nattering nabob of negativism”.
with respect to gore, there is no one in american politics better qualified by intellect, personality, and experience for the job of president than al gore.
would he compete for the job?
if he does not,
it says a great deal negative about our current system of choosing leaders and, especially, about the role of main-stream media corporations as facilitators of political dysfunction in our society.
Nice to see Bob Woodruff looking healthy again and David Bloom’s little girls.
Urban Pirate – they’re on opposite sides of the dais.

wiping off those bloody damned spots.
hey OK Kiddo– I was hoping you’d be here!
Al Gore!
watching the nightly news… not good. not good at all.
Re-elect President Gore!
PLEASE run. We need you.
egregious @ 82
I took your advice re: begging.
Eli @ 63
I did one. If no one’s offered, e-mail me at lindy at lindysgraphics dot net.
Snort, Fibber McEarthtones, snort.
All hail Somerby.
I hope Al does read this, Eli. You’ve made some good arguments.
The SNL State Of The Union video I *really* want to see is the Dubya one they did *before* the 2000 election, where half the country is on fire, underwater, or occupied by Mexico/Iraq/China.
I saw maureen dowd on tv once. she was so so pleased with her coyness.
I wondered such a lightweight got a national column (*cough*broder*cough*novak). She’d be great at exposing after hours drinking at the Miss Wisconsin pageant in the ‘Mosinee Herald-Tribune.’
Let her rip Al this time. Just let her try.
Mommybrain @ 85
Thanks – me too.
Eli @ 85
If he becomes President again we owe you big time.
Mabel’s Wig Shack @ 87
I’m looking forward to her inevitable “Althouse Moment”.

that being said, i doubt if he will run.

How to say this: I live in the South. I’m one angry SOB. A tree hugger, no less. If I write off every ignorant sole I’ve come to know down here, I’m not left with much. Mom has to go as well. And my sister. And abortion (as in no) is the only issue that matters to another sister.
And Teddy wonders why I’m so condescending. I live with right-wing republican, dumbass christians who love crazy ann and jesus and guns and racism. It’s a chore living with the gift of intelligence when all around me, “they got nothin’”. These are good people, just so god damn stupid it makes my head hurt. What can I say?
Bush: I’d like to thank Senator Webb for providing security

Al, we really do need you. I know it is a personal sacrifice, but please run.
What a treat. I never saw that video. I love Al Gore. Eli,once again a great post. lolo
Gore/Finegold
Gore/Edwards
Gore/Fitzgerald (just dreaming)
President Gore:
Please…Just run. Run as you are now. I don’t have a lot of money, but I’d give $100 hard earned dollars, and I could probably raise $1,000 for you. I’ve raise lots of money for local candidates, and could do it for you. Run, baby, run! Please do it.
what an a**hole, he compares Nancy to Babs and gets not so many laughs.
youkillednoodle @ 96
Just being a smartass. But it’s hard to imagine things *possibly* being any worse than they could be now, with *anyone* in the White House.
I guess they think Iraq or al Qaeda would have nuked us by now or something.
If I want someone as prez who will take us out of foreign adventures, do everything possible to heal Mother Earth, and work toward peace in the Middle East, who then do I want?
Hello angie. ;0)
Why isn’t the correspondents dinner on C-Span tonight?
lolo @ 100
Thanks, lolo!
If the Gore Fitz…
angie @ 104
You have a stronger stomach than I do.
This whole media awards thing on CSPAN2 seems surreal to me. The media have done an awful job the last 6 years. Why are they giving themselves awards and patting themselves on the back for having done such a miserable job?
Now Bush is up showing how limp this whole affair truly is.
Diane @ 107
it is on cspan2.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 106
hello friend and fellow firepup!
PS– Laura claps like a seal.
I think I sense who the GOP fears most. Gore. And they should.
As much as I want anyone to be president i would want Al Gore. he is certainly more inspiring than anyone in the official crop.
Way OT but:
Henry W (our hero) is pushing a revisions to the Freedom of Information Act Freedom of Information Act Amendments of 2007
Push this with your rep and senators. It will probably be vetoed but one never knows.
Oh well, I don’t get C-Span 2, guess since no Colbert this year, I’m not missing much. Bush seems to have lost his swagger, that was really a half hearted performance tonight.
lolo @ 102
I like it.
gore’s my first choice too!
don’t think there is any other candidate who could unite the progressive netroots like gore (maybe feingold?)….
but a better pick for running mate would be nice… and please tell tipper there are more important things to worry about “impolite” language.
in addition to saving our planet… gore really seems to get (now) that a imperial presidency is a bad thing and why our media and our democracy is in big trouble…
I three hundredth that! PLEASE AL! I don’t know if the country deserves you but oh god how we need you!
I am not alone when I tell you honestly the second you toss your hat into the ring I am taking my 3 months vacation and working for you. Stuffing envelopes, knocking on doors, making phone calls… it’d be the happiest time of my life if I was working towards your reelection. Please, AL, RUN!
brendancalling @ 112
I opted into an “interview” meme and was asked who I would want to be president out of *anybody* alive or dead, and I realized it was Al Gore. In other circumstances, I probably would have picked FDR or one of that crowd, but we *need* a president who understands how important the environment is, and no-one knows it better than Al.
punaise @

Progressive pundit on H&C is Jane Fleming, doing a great job. Cutting back & forth to the dinner, this skit is really lame, Brian Williams has got to be embarrassed.
Al Gore-The Environment and More!
John Edwards VP Looking out for the Common Man and more!
We need candidates with enough intellect to survey the problems of the world and then bring in the right people to get us back on track again as a respected world leader in science/technology and working for the benefit of all mankind.
We would vote for Al AGAIN in a heartbeat!!!!! Please run. My five grandchilren need a world at peace and healing. We love you, RT KC
I mean; can I feature anybody better than Gore? It’s strongly felt in this home, that this man can lead us out of the wilderness.
angie @ 122
…and replays @ 6 am Eastern on C-Span uno.
Thanks for the link Angie, think I’ll just hang here at the Lake. From the bits I’ve been seeing, I don’t think I’m missing much.
Gore would do more good for the country and the planet if he was the champion of an expanded (and rationalized) EPA mandate under a Democratic president as EPA Administrator. To change that agency so it has the ability to do what must be done will be a job just as big as actually being president.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 126
He can and will.
AND, he would stand up to scrutiny and accountability.
I think Eli covered the high points.
We’ve got your back.
We NEED you.
We’re begging.
Professor Foland @ 128
I have a feeling Gore knows some people who could do that. But I can’t see anyone else being able to repair the rest of the country. Hell, I’m not even positive *Gore* can, but he’s the only one with a chance.
Republicans move to block Al Gore ‘Live Earth’ rock concert
If Gore runs, he probably cannot run with global warming as THE KEY ISSUE. Actually he doesn’t have to since he is forever linked to the issue anyway. No, he has to run on the same platform as Bush did, but never lived up to: restoring integrity and dignity to the presidency. If he does that he will win.
I want Gore as President. I want this man to appoint the people that will carry out his mandate to protect Mother Earth.
As Eli said…
“Please select a different running mate and campaign manager this time. Thank you in advance.
AMEN to that!
dreamcatcher @ 132
Global warming should be a prominent issue, but I agree he needs to appeal to people who desperately want this mess cleaned up.
BTOT (back to original topic),
Thanks for the video, it is a lovely pain everytime I watch it. The humanity contained in the man is simply amazing.
From a purely selfish POV, it hurts me, because I get angry at how much time and energy I have spent in teh past 6 years, simply being angry. I want to work towards positive things, not battling the insanity that is this administration. Unfortunately, the next president is going to spend most of their time fixing the disaster that Bush as created and will leave.
In the same vein, I cringe at the thought of Hillary as president… another purely political person is not what we need. However, if I thought that Al, would consider running again in 8 years, I would be happy to quit bugging him. But……
This is, without a doubt, your time Al! The nomination is yours for the taking….seriously. You could walk in now and win in a walk. I have no doubt.
I, too am begging.
RUN AL, RUN!!
Please, Al! Run! Maybe Wes Clark as VP. Thank you.
I would like to direct your attention to the 1:00 mark in the excerpt of Pelosi’s remarks as broadcast on cnn (c&l).
It was strangely edited.
Original:
The american people have lost faith with the president’s conduct of the war.
CNN Edited:
The american people have lost faith with the PRESENT conduct of the war.
Better bloggers than me should post a heads up.
And you know what?
All of these war games, wars and occupations are killing this beautiful blue ball, too.
Really, does all of our polluting caca get measured? How much fuel does it take to play games and kill? How much to fly these chickenhawks all over the planet with their security detail?
Al Gore knows how to play the game. He was groomed to be the president. They devastated him emotionally by stealing the election. I can understand why he has cold feet. But…..with all the dirty tricks coming to light with oversight hearings and with the dirt about Gwb04dotcom growing legs…as we speak enfolding all those scandals being reported by whistleblowers etc……maybe he will reconsider. Think he can find the lockbox?
t
OT, but KO is now on (second showing) at 10pm eastern (ny)
He normally shows the second time at Mid. I guess he got a promotion!!!
Go KO!
Kathryn in MA @ 138
Clark’s gone missing, lately. Hope he’s polishing his campaign moves.
Hi Kathryn!
My comment appears to have disappeared – yes, I refreshed 3X…
Gore for me too, but when? With a tie among Clinton, Obama and Edwards, he should avoid coming in as long as possible. I think I figured out the word that shot me down – has the number three in it.
Yes! Please run, President Gore, pretty please?
I just found this article linked from DU:
[Mod Note; broken link was busting the margins and was deleted. Sorry.]
It purports that Nader has asked Gore if he would consider running on the Green Party ticket and that Gore is discussing the possibility with his family and advisors. How ironic would that be? I’d be so afraid of him running as a Green. I think he’d do a lot better than Nader did, but do people really think he could actually win on a third party ticket? I know an awful lot of people who would vote for him, but I’m so afraid it would lead to a Republican president. We need him to run, but as a Dem. We want him to actually win.
What do other people think about this?
Ed*ard Teller @ 144
agreed.
I voted for Gore in 1992, 1996 and 2000 and I will vote for him in 2008 if he runs. The country needs Al Gore.
SharonRB @ 144
Insight? Isn’t that the Moonie publication that even the Washington Times considers unreliable?
GREAT post Eli!
I haven’t been this inspired since Tipper was quoted recently as indicating they had not ruled out another run.
Gives me new hope that the truly honorable Al Gore may be moved as well and at the very least allow a netroots/grassroots draft movement.
Gore/Edwards sounds like a dream ticket to me and Clinton/Gore left no doubt a so-called southern ticket can win the White House, (twice).
And for any trolls whining about Tipper wanting music labels rated or whatever the hell that was all about – allow me to say just STFU! It’s a young mother’s thing and she had every right to speak up and out.
I pretty much never comment, but I’m adding one here because this cause is so close to my heart.
As I keep saying to anyone who will listen, Al Gore as a presidential candidate is in a class by himself. Other candidates may be able to offer intelligence and sincerity, but no one else comes close to having that and the political experience, service credentials and positive public image that Al has. I so want him to run!
Anyone who agrees with this and hasn’t signed the Draft Gore petition should go over there and sign, and get everyone they know who’s interested to sign up, too. I have it on good authority that a “strong draft movement” will really make a difference when Al considers his options in the next few months.
Well, better late than never, I always say. I’d be willing to beg too, if it’ll help to convince Al to run. I’m convinced He’s the One! Someone here mentioned that they think he has a moral responsibility to run. I guess to at least some degree, I think so too. Surely he wouldn’t want to leave us to the likes of Hillary. Edwards and Obama seem to be good guys, but I agree with Eli, they don’t have the necessary experience. We have a lot of good people in the Democratic party, but none rises to the top as the cream of the crop as Al Gore does.
To lolo’s list of Feingold & Edwards, I would add Howard Dean & Obama & Richardson (although I think he’d make a great Secretary of State.) As President, Mr. Gore would have many, many great choices for a cabinet, and he would have the opportunity to bring some real integrity back to the Oval Office. Integrity in the oval office has been a long time gone now, and it’s such a necessity if we’re to regain the respect from the world. Please Al Gore, take our plea to heart! Run for President in ‘08.

Ed*ard Teller @ 154
Of course. After the Colbert Smackdown last year, it really couldn’t go any other way.
I sincerely belive that Gore’s time has come. He IS what the world needs. He is a man for the age.
I said it last year that Al gore should run and all my friends and family told me that I was crazy and didn’t know what I was saying.
I’ll go further. If Al Gore decides to get into this race then everyone else, Hillary included, instantly become second best.
He would dominate the field.
In my heart I want him to run, but my head tells me he will not.
So, when Hillary takes office, she should make him special counsel to the President for Environmental and Energy affairs.
where4art @ 149
Thanks, where4! Al is the only one with the complete package.
Diane @ 116
You might be able to watch it on your computer as a live feed – links should be on the CSpan home page. sorry no linky.
Funny to see Rove somewhat sweating under the lights, but I’d like to see him sweating under the lights in a congressional hearing…
“My girlfriend’s a Green, and *still* takes the Nader view that they’re all the same so what difference does it make… but she’d vote for Gore in a heartbeat.”
If she and the rest of the Greens had voted for Gore in a heartbeat in 2000, we wouldn’t be having most of these desperate conversations.
But, then, looking at the course his former running mate has taken, I consider Al very fortunate he was never in a position to become the next JFK.
And I wonder to this day if JFK Junior wasn’t brought down because if he had run as Gore’s VP in 2000, ther would have been no way to stop that ticket, by hook or corrk.
Just some of the ol’ conspiracy kool-aid.
Anyone else interested in dropping the blog on Inhofe? He’s trying awfully hard tostop our concert on the capitol grounds in July, seems to me if we can “take out” Delay, Allen, Foley and so many other power-hungry creeps with shady histories, surely we can find some worthwhile dirt on Inhofe, Davis and Issa.
Talk about a hall of shame… and watching him on the Tube, I keep expecting to see Inhofe’s pupils to turn into little green slits.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 116
Kiddo….we can dream. With Al we can conquer anything. He is a Mr.FixIt. We could all live happily everafter especially with the all those extra presidential powers 43 installed. I bet Henry Waxman would be thrilled. Here is to truth justice and the American way.

Nice. Even better YouTube fodder than the Colbert/Ifill interview.
So we go into the convention with no winner on the first ballot, second ballot, third ballot and somebody gets up and nominates Al Gore. The crowd goes crazy. Run Al Run! Run Al Run!
Al Gore is nominated by acclamation. He gets up right then and there and announces his running mate and calls up all the men and women he would like in his cabinet. The crowd goes nuts over their favorites being honored and see a real plan for healing the country, We want Al, they shout! Later it turns out that more poeple had watched the Democratic convention than watched the oscars or Al’s acceptance speech for the Nobel Peace Prize.
If Senator Hillary Clinton wanted to be a statesperson, she would support Gore. And in the process, she would endear herself to me forever.
I wonder if this post could be considered a Gorewhore…

It should at least take you to Insightmag. Then click on the White House link at the left and look for the article on Gore mulling run for White House.
If Al Gore runs, his most obvious running mate would be the man he endorsed for President in 2004. The man who never said he wouldn’t run for VICE President. The man largely responsible for the spine transplant that saved the Party.
Al Gore as statesman
Howard Dean as Pit Bull with steelies.

Oh wait – he hands out the Kool-Aid
Wow, that was quite a dinner. I thought the entertainment did a wonderful job mimicking completely unfunny comedians, so realistic.
There is definitely something in the air. On Saturday I wrote a song called “Run, Al, Run.”
The chorus goes:
Run, Al, run
How can you lose when you already won?
Way back before all the damage was done
Now you’re the number one favorite son, so
Run, Al, run.
You can hear it at http://www.draftgore.com/ or on my website, http://www.paulkaplanmusic.com
I am not simply holding out hope that you will run, Al Gore. I am unable to bear the thought of you not running. Please, please. Your nation needs you, the world needs you. You have gotten the word out, so everyone knows the Global Warming issues. Now is the time when you could actually effect policy to bring it to pass, beginning with the worst polluters…us.
I am unable to work for any other candidate. The truth of my willingness just isn’t there for them. But one word from you and I’ll volunteer a lot in your behalf … and for all our sakes.
Please. You are the statesman we need. And the time is upon us.
Alan Jones and Frederick Buechner have said that “Vocation is where your deep desire meets the world’s great hunger.” We have the great hunger. Can you muster the desire? We will be there for you.
Keep posting like this! I think that if the liberal blogosphere pushes hard enough, it can swell over into the MSM, and Gore will run.
Gore/Edwards! It wouldn’t matter who the Repugnicunts put up against that ticket. Gore/Clinton even. Teh Triangulator would make a much better Vicepreznit than Preznit in my view.
Mr. President Gore,
pleaaaaaaaaaaaaase.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 135
Exactly, OKK. Albert Gore would attract the very best minds, the most talented, capable people in the country in every aspect of governance–in fact, they would line up to volunteer.
I’ve displayed a Gore/Feingold bumper sticker for a year, but I’d be happy with Clark (very happy!), Edwards, or whomever Al would choose. The operative word is: GORE
Some years ago, I had the opportunity to meet him and shake his hand. (Alas, I finally had to wash it!). Even then, the sheer brilliance of his intellect gave me shivers, and I found him utterly real, totally without artifice (and more than a little attractive). I will never forgive Mme. Brazile and her coterie of “experts.” Never.
This world needs him in the bulliest pulpit, the presidency of the USA.

Run, Al, Run into Inhofe the ignorant. We need Al a lot more than he needs us – and this kind of trouble.
WASHINGTON (AFP) – Republicans in Congress are trying to bar former vice president
Gore is planning a single-day, series of free “Live Earth” concerts on seven continents, with the goal of calling attention to the climate change crisis.
The US concert, scheduled for the steps of the Capitol on July 7, 2007, has drawn an A-list slate of pop performers, including the Police, Kanye West, Faith Hill, Bon Jovi and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
But some Republicans have balked over the cost of providing police for the event, while others insist that the concert is a partisan Democratic event and as such, not allowed on Capitol grounds.
One outspoken opponent of the concert is Senator James Inhofe, a longtime debunker of cataclysmic climate change, which he has derided as a “hoax.”
SubwaySerenade @ 190
Heh. That was the secret plan. I heard about it at the celebration of Howard’s election as DNC chair.
1. Get Howard in charge of the DNC
2. Al Gore runs in ‘08.
3. Howard never said he wouldn’t run for Vice President.
Okay, I heard it as friend-of-a-friend, but the friend I heard it from was close to a particular person who was very high in the Dean campaign.

Me too. The world has not been right since 2000. He knows how we are so screwed because of the cabal and the octopus. God willing maybe he will run. Wouldn’t it be nice
There’s a reason so many of us feel desperate for a run by Gore. The system has been so broken by Bush and his cabal that we need someone with real depth of experience, intelligence and insight if we have any hope of recovering.
In every respect — economically, foreign policy, environmentally, democratically — we are in a very dangerous place, and the very future of our country depends on the choices made over the next few years. I don’t know anyone else in the Democratic Party, and certainly not among those running, who has not just the exeperience and the wisdom to help fix what’s been broken, but also the vision to help move us to a new and better path.
Al, we really need you. I’m sure that you’re happier not campaigning. But I too am begging you…

My husband does computer graphics for a living. When Howard Dean was running in 2004, Demetrius spent many hours creating graphics for the grassroots. That was his contribution to the “mousepads and shoeleather” of the people-powered Dean campaign.
He can’t imagine doing the same for any of the candidates currently in the race.

As far as contempt is concerned, Rhenquist, Scalia, and Thomas voted as one might expect, so you can’t come down on them too hard. No, reserve your sharpest contempt for Justice Kennedy who was the one who decided that the Supreme Court should hear the case, as opposed to sending it back to FL where it belonged as a states-right issue. He followed that by voting against Gore. Then after Kennedy, your sharpest contempt should go to Sandra O’Connor, who voted against type in this case. She will go to her eternal rest feeling like she made the worst mistake in her life, but will never say anything.
The other four, bless them, voted on the side of the angels… Souter, Stevens, Breyer, and Ginsburg. Please do not include them in your contempt. They done right.

As unpleasant as it would be for him, in this case I actually think it’s his patriotic duty to run. There’s no one else who can bring what he brings to the table.

Israel is in the same dilema that the US is, their least honorable, greediest leaders are determining their military and political agenda, so just like the U.S. Israel is considered a bully, when there are millions of people there who yearn for peace.
If the Arabs are finally ready to talk about peace with Israel, instead of demanding their annihilation, it is surely time for both the U.S. and Israel to come to the table.
Right now, I think Gore absolutely deserves the Nobel Peace Prize, and not for political reasons. But whoever finally gets these Middle Eastern nations together to discuss peace instead of war will deserve the next Nobel. And the gratitude of the entire world.
Unfortunately, as long as Cheney and his ilk are scuttling any attempt at peace, by our own dubious peacemaker Condi Rice, even Al Gore can’t fix it.
Until we remove these scoundrels from their last refuge, we will never answer your loaded question, “tryggth.”

THE ASSAULT ON REASON
by Al Gore
ISBN: 1594201226
due out 22 May 2007
Penguin Books HC
Book Description:
A visionary analysis of how the politics of fear, secrecy, cronyism, and blind faith has combined with the degration of the public sphere to create an environment dangerously hostile to reason
At the time George W. Bush ordered American forces to invade Iraq, 70 percent of Americans believed Saddam Hussein was linked to 9/11. Voters in Ohio, when asked by pollsters to list what stuck in their minds about the campaign, most frequently named two Bush television ads that played to fears of terrorism.
We live in an age when the thirty-second television spot is the most powerful force shaping the electorate’s thinking, and America is in the hands of an administration less interested than any previous administration in sharing the truth with the citizenry. Related to this and of even greater concern is this administration’s disinterest in the process by which the truth is ascertained, the tenets of fact-based reasoning-first among them an embrace of open inquiry in which unexpected and even inconvenient facts can lead to unexpected conclusions.
How did we get here? How much damage has been done to the functioning of our democracy and its role as steward of our security? Never has there been a worse time for us to lose the capacity to face the reality of our long-term challenges, from national security to the economy, from issues of health and social welfare to the environment. As The Assault on Reason shows us, we have precious little time to waste.
Gore’s larger goal in this book is to explain how the public sphere itself has evolved into a place hospitable to reason’s enemies, to make us more aware of the forces at work on our own minds, and to lead us to an understanding of what we can do, individually and collectively, to restore the rule of reason and safeguard our future. Drawing on a life’s work in politics as well as on the work of experts across a broad range of disciplines, Al Gore has written a farsighted and powerful manifesto for clear thinking.
No one else comes close to what Al Gore can offer our country as President.
No one.
Please give us hope again.
listener @ 295
Al totally gets it.
Wow. It makes me so sad for what might have been. What a genuine, kind and caring human being Al Gore is. I hope he does ultimately decide to run for the presidency in 2008. With someone as decent as Al Gore at the helm, this country just might stand a chance to get out from under the deep, deep hole of corruption, ineptitude and reckless danger we now find ourselves in.
I figure Al Gore will run.
But I also figure he won’t announce until September or October.
Meanwhile, he has his book coming out,
and the usual promotional appearances on all the key shows.
Then the Live concerts on July 7th.
Then winning the Noble Peace Prize in September.
THEN he’ll be ready to announce, eh?
I think the Repubs are absolutely terrified of the possibility of a Gore run. Inhofe in particular gets apoplectic at the mere mention of his name.
Right now they’re trying to block his “Live Earth” concert.
It would serve them right to have to call him ‘Mr. President’ (as they should have done 7 years ago!)
Jimmy Carter wants Al Gore to run.
That says a LOT to me.

Davis needs badly to be targeted for elimination from this gov’t — I’d love to know who we’re lining up to go after his seat in 2008.
From the bits I saw earlier today, and the comments I read in the final GSA Hearing thread below, he seems to be actively obstructing justice (surely on orders from “above” in the GOP machine).
That Grassley could not be corrupted that way is heartening — he will be needed in the years to come in any attempt to rebuild a non-criminal Repub Party.

Right there with ya! I’ve been a little perplexed by the Gore cheerleading I’ve seen around here. This idea that he’s learned his lesson now since 2000 is quite strange considering he’s been around D.C. since he was a kid, and has been a major player for many years as a Senator and VP. Poor little Al Gore didn’t understand the evil ways of Washington back in 2000, but now he’s got it all figured out!
You really said it well. Awful, awful campaign in 2000. It’s been amazing how many excuses there have been for his stunning failure. From Donna Brazile, to Nader, to the Supreme Court….none of this should’ve even mattered since it shouldn’t have been close…he lost to a monkey!
I better stop before I start on his ACTIONS while he was VP. The man is a DLC-ocrat through and through. Doesn’t anyone remember how protesters would disrupt his speeches when he was VP yelling, “Read your book!!”? Search ‘al gore nafta’ for just a few examples.
My main point is that we have some very attractive possibilities RIGHT NOW, and I don’t understand why so much energy is being wasted on “drafting” Gore. So Edwards or Obama don’t have enough ‘experience’ to be Prez, huh? Well, Gore had tons of experience when he picked J. Low as his VP and made the many other blunders. I guess we’re supposed to get excited by the most entrenched candidate then?!? I love Obama’s response to this where he says two of the most impressive resumes in D.C. are from Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld. ‘Nuff said.
Elizabeth Edwards or even Michelle Obama as First Lady instead of Tipper Gore. C’mon, you gotta like the sound of that! OK, must stop now….all this Gore talk is such a buzzkill to my excitement about ‘08…
Does Al Gore seriously sound DLC to you today? Seriously?
Silleigh @ 295
No.
If he doesn’t want to run, do you really want to split up the Democratic party vote, take votes away from our nominee, and live through four years of President McCain?
GSD @
254
Oh.
Thanks. This should be interesting. Does anyone know whether anything’s happening in Somalia lately? You can fly from there to Iran, depending on sea limits, while staying “in international airspace or over countries [none] that had granted permission.”
Bonkers@310…I remain unconvinced. What I remember is that when the DLCers screwed Dean in Iowa, it was Al Gore who stood by him (discussed by Dean in his book You Have the Power.
And don’t be trying to tell me things about Dean either. He was my excellent Governor for nearly 12 years.
Omg, number seven, yep-
Every night and every day-
Eli @ 311
“Sound” isn’t what I’m basing it on. He has a LONG voting record and time as VP that I followed over the years that have formed my opinions about him. I’ve always felt he’s a pander-er, even before 2000, so I’m skeptical of his speeches over the last couple of years.
Do you value his speeches more than his actions?
I just think Washington needs some new blood. These names like Clinton, Gore, Kerry, etc. have run the Democratic Party into the ground, and I’m not willing to give them a pass anymore.
bonkers @ 311
I honestly believe Al has undergone a genuine transformation. He’s never shown that kind of passion before, and I don’t think he’s that good an actor.
listener @ 314
What? Dean is exactly what we need. He is doing as much as anyone to give power back to “we the people.” You’re lucky to have had him as your Gov.
If you want it, Big Al, I’m with you.
Things are poor without Gore.
I’m in, but this time he’s got to promise that if it’s close he’ll ask for a hand recount of every ballot from every precinct in a 50 states (and D.C. – yea!)
I think it would be a good idea for him to let the field sort itself out. I wish that something would happen to get Hillary to drop out.
Eli @ 317
Perhaps you’re right, but there’s enough history with him where I’m not willing to take that chance.
As the immortal Shrub says, “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me….uhhhh…ahhhhh….won’t get fooled again!”
Eli @ 317
I’d like to believe that, but I need to hear from him that his views on some of these issues have changed. He and Clinton ran on essentially the same platform in the ‘92 primaries; those policies did nothing to reverse the widening of the gap between rich and poor in this country. In fact, if anything, they exacerbated it.
If we’ve really slid so far to the right that sane environmental policy makes a guy a strong progressive, then we might as well exhume the body of Richard Nixon and vote for him. He did create the EPA, after all. Otherwise, though, Gore still has some splainin’ to do.
chris @ 323
That’s some Grade A snark, and so true.
chris @ 318
I’ve been sold on Gore ever since his MLK Day speech last year where he absolutely tore Bush a new one.
By Brent Budowsky
“Imagine this: a President of the United States with vast domestic and international experience who would aspire to unify the American people, uplift a reformed American politics, and inspire friends of freedom and democracy everywhere.
Imagine: a President who would assume office with commander in chief quality experience who would be trusted on matters of war and peace; and with a temperament that respects the breadth and diversity of the American Family and brings people together in common cause.
There will be other candidates for President who have much to offer and would deserve enthusiastic support. In my opinion, Al Gore is unique because of the extraordinary breadth of his experience, his ability to get ahead of the curve on cutting edge issues, and his vast knowledge that war and peace issues should be decided with integrity, clarity, and the full involvement of the American people, Congress, and allies.
Beyond all of the individual issues is this: the kind of America a Gore Presidency would bring, which would let loose the positive and creative energies of a good and great people, versus the kind of America George Bush has brought, which is what the overwhelming majority of the American people want to end.”
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/…..28405.html
Given all that happened in 2000, it’s understandable why Gore would not want to get back into the slimepit. But maybe the way to get him back in 2008 is to appeal to his love of country. We can suggest that it’s his patriotic duty to step up to the plate to clean up the disastrous mess left by the Darth Cheney, Baby Bush and their cronies.
None of the other Dems (even tho I like Edwards) is anywhere near as qualified, and Hillary as nominee would be an unmitigated disaster for the Democratic party. In short:
RE-ELECT PRESIDENT GORE!
Eli: Much respect man, but I’m curious as to why you don’t find enough in the current candidates (Hillary notwithstanding) to get excited by them, and just let Gore continue doing what he’s doing. Is it the “experience” argument? Is there more to it than that?
well i’m not quite in the gore corner – i remember him during the 00 election and thought he allowed himself to be wacked by wingers and was slow in response and felt he had to run away from clinton. tho he won the popular vote he didnt fight for the job – nixed the court effort sooo i really dont think he has the drive anyway…..
Ohhh I’m so counting my gorechickens before they are hatched, but wouldn’t it be GREAT to have a DO-OVER
Al: When JFK said, “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country,” he may not have been talking about you, but there is nothing more noble that you could do for our country than be its next president and lead it back toward the path.
I agree consider this my signature.
Guam guy @ 327
There it is again…’qualified.’ What does that mean?
You want the most connected and entrenched candidate then? I think Edwards and Obama have the LIFE experience, OUTSIDE OF WASHINGTON, to sit down and meet with people from all different walks of life and from all parts of the globe. Don’t know about you, but I have been disgusted by how Washington operates my entire adult life. I want new ideas and new ways of doing things. It just doesn’t have to be the way it is.
bonkers @ 323
The experience thing is actually a pretty big consideration for me. Neither Obama or Edwards have any executive experience, and only one term in the Senate, and Hillary’s is pretty peripheral. Under normal circumstances, that would be a concern. Under our current circumstances, it’s a potential one-term catastrophe leading to another 8-12 years of Republican madness.
I’m also not entirely convinced Obama is much of a progressive – he made a lot of very disappointing votes, and talked too much about how Democrats need to talk about religion. He’s very eloquent and inspiring, and I think he has the second-best chance of winning after Gore – I’m just not convinced he’d be much of a president.
I think Edwards is the most honorable and progressive of the three front-runners, but I’m not convinced that he’s much of a campaigner. He didn’t do much for Kerry from the VP slot, and before that he didn’t do well in the southern states in the primaries. I also lost a lot of respect for him over the way he handled the attacks on his bloggers. No, he didn’t fire them, but he actually *agreed* with O’Donohue, and didn’t say a word when they started getting hate e-mails. To me it looked like he just hunkered down and waited for them to resign.
He’s been a little better since then, especially being the first to bail on the Fox-hosted debate, but I’m still worried that Rove will eat him alive in the general.
And Hillary, don’t get me started.
Oh, and I agree with everyone who said his 2000 campaign sucked and Lieberman was a mistake. I just don’t think it could happen again. Not only do I think that Al knows better, but I think he’d get prodded by all the people who now know what kind of passion he’s capable of.
lolo @ 102
I second that!
Eli- Amen to your comment at 8:54 (333?)
I’m with bonkers and chris on this one. I just don’t see what the excitement is about. It’s easy to be relaxed when you have no pressure and you’re in your element, but when it counted the man lost to fucking Bush. Pre 9/11.
And rock star? please. I’m not sure which concerts you go to, but let me assure you that Gore induces the same cringe he always has. I find each of the current three candidates much more appealing. Obama way more.
It’s great that he looks relaxed in home videos. Give the Rove machine five minutes and his overall image would be similar to 2000, even if the results may be more favorable.
sonate @ 137
Al, please stay way away from your last running mate, and AIPAC too. I kinda agree with Mel Gibson.
Eli #334: Thanks for the time with that.
Obama has lived all over the world. He has had a very confusing and difficult childhood, and through it all he excelled fantastically. Seems to have a great family life.
Edwards is a self-made man. He and Elizabeth have weathered some incredibly difficult situations and are inspiring a nation already (well, except Katie Couric and Limpballs).
I value this kind of ‘experience’ more than political experience. These are the kind of tests of a person’s soul that make them great leaders in my opinion. Whether they’re negotiating with an foreign country, or working on a bill’s passage, they have a sort of ’street smarts” that someone like Gore, who grew up in politics, doesn’t have.
I also think that because of how both Edwards and Obama got to where they are, they’re decision making is truly guided by their hearts and minds, while a life-long politician is more of a scheme-er.
Of course, I could be naive, but until proven otherwise, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Thanks again.
Thanks, bonkers, I can see where you’re coming from. I just think you don’t give Gore enough credit, and I don’t think the legislature is great preparation for the presidency, and the complexity of managing the enormous beast that is our government.
Again, under *normal* circumstances, yeah, maybe we have the luxury of letting someone learn on the job, but these are *not* normal circumstances, and I want someone who will hit the ground running. And again, I have doubts about Edwards’ campaign skills and Obama’s progressiveness.
All that being said, I’ll pull for Edwards or Obama enthusiastically if they win the primary, and I’ll even pull for Hillary, but not very enthusiastically…
Eli @ 339
I hear ya!
BTW, Obama was just scored as one of the most liberal Senators in some study. Don’t have time to find link, but I was a little surprised considering what I’ve read around here. Outside of one or two questionable votes I could find, he has been very liberal, so who knows.
Well, Bonkers, if Dean would run we’d both be in the same camp! :-)
But I believe Gore has come through devastation with great integrity. Having found new focus with Global Warming, he has proven himself a person of great dignity and magnanimity.
I’ll clarify my earlier comment with “any running mate EXCEPT Lieberman”!
But I believe Gore not only has the experience,
he has the ESTEEM of the world.
We really need to restore good will with our neighbours on Earth.
We came off pretty poorly when we couldn’t prove the election was stolen,
and even worse when Bush appeared to have been re-elected.
We owe this to the world, as well as ourselves.
I’m tired of smiles and rhetoric.
I want a statesman (or stateswoman) for President.
I’d be happy to have Pat Leahy,
but he’s needed where he is.
By Nov. 2008 Gore will have given his message to all the world.
We need him in office to complete that work.
Bush and Co are uniquely vulgar but then large majorities went ga-ga over Reagan and he ranked right up there. Bush is just a do-over with a worst actor. #3 is a debatable proposition.
1)Yes the Supreme Court nominations are considerably more conservative but Clinton never nominated a liberal
2)Clinton at best was a moderate Southern Democrat. The powers-that-be were safe.
3)We could debate his bombing of Baghdad and other bone-head uses of the military
4)”Welfare reform”… enough said.
5)Failed health care reform, insurance companies and special interests ran amock.
6)Continued insane emphasis on the military and corresponding military spending at the expense of education, health care, social services, elderly needs, infant mortality and on and on.
7)Environment: mediocore at best
8)Corporate control, tax breaks, social responsibility, anti-trust, overseas job transfer, all presented a bleak picture.
9)Progressive tax policy never happened
10)No change or reform in campaign finance reform. Corporate control of our government is the same.
Heck, I am getting tired. If #3 was meant to compare a Southern moderate Democrat and a vulgar right-wing Republican, I guess the Democrat comes out on top. Whoopie! I guess #3 was right it is noticeable if you look close enough. But then when you think about any movement in the status quo where vast numbers in our country live in abject poverty, lack education, health care etc. and by the way the 9th ward of New Orleans was alive and just as not so well under Clinton. So let’s give Bush a 2 and Clinton a 5. Does that seem fair?
bonkers @ 340
Unfortunately, it’s one of those deals where I can’t remember specifics, I just remember multiple occasions thinking, “Crap, Obama lets us down *again*.” But he did push for strong ethics rules for Congress, which was a big plus.
listener @ 341
We owe what? To bankrupt our middle class to the benefit of the rich even further? We owe that to ourselves?
Sorry, but fuck that. We have too many legitimately good candidates to waste our votes on a triangulator like Gore. We need to move forward, not back.
chris: I like the way you think!
“Forward, not back” could be a good campaign slogan.
If nothing else, Democrats are the no-insane-wars-for-no-reason party, and the pro-Constitution, competence-over-cronyism party.
Even if you make the argument that the two parties aren’t that far apart politically (which I don’t particularly buy, although the DLC sure isn’t helping), the Republican style of governance is radically different, and extremely dangerous. Oh, and did I mention that the Democrats wouldn’t have invaded Iraq?
Perhaps Democrats would be equally dangerous if the media covered for them like they do for Republicans, but that’s not the reality we’re in.
bonkers: back at ya.
And I know that I agree with Gore backers about 95% of everything. We just see Gore completely differently.
angie @ 256
And Mexicans and Central America too! ;~)
Ironically, Edwards is the only one of the Big Three who *doesn’t* look like a triangulator to me…
My thoughts exactly! We really NEED him!
Valerie @ 352
That’s right! Edwards ‘08! ;)
Bonkers,
Edwards dissed Dean during the 2004 election cycle
and Obama has dissed Dean since then.
They lost me then.
Gore/Obama!
or
Gore/Edwards
or, barring that
Edwards/Obama!!
Eli, just a reminder, the Democrats voted to give the village idiot the power to wage war on Iraq. It took the Democrats(most of them)incredibly long to realize that this war of choice was wrong not to mention illegal and immoral. What are the civilian causualties at? I think the British study has it at about 600K. So most Democrats don’t get a pass. And certainly, “let’s go get them” Edwards was right in on the folly.
listener @ 353
Wasn’t Obama’s support for Lamont really half-assed as well?
Well, Edwards was running against Dean. Never heard about the Obama diss. I’m surprised by that.
Dr. Dean is one of the biggest heroes of the the ‘06 elections, as most here at FDL know, but most of the public doesn’t. What he did to wrestle control of the DemocratIC Party from the Corporatists was amazing, and when I heard about the 50 State Strategy I literally teared up. For a liberal to diss him…well, that would just not be good.
Mark @ 355
Roughly half the Democrats, as opposed to *all* of the Republicans. The Senate Democratic caucus appears to be split roughly half-and-half between DLC sellout assholes, and Senators who can more or less pass as progressives. I would much prefer “all”, and I want to see the DLC primaried into oblivion, but that will take time.
Also – while half the Democratic senators voted to authorize the invasion, Lieberman is the only one who would have actually *initiated* it.
Eli @ 357
And Edwards was one of the first to go there for Ned. Forgot about Obama’s no-show. I see triangles.
Sad but true about Obama dissing Dean. It really made me mad at the time. Folks over at HEP could probably provide the link.
I am also not cutting anyone slack who voted for thet pre-emptive war in Iraq. I nearly froze my feet (literally) protesting that January, and was quoted in the VT papers saying we would be “destablising a significant part of the Middle East.” If a lowly rural citizen like myself had the common sense to see it, I’m sure not voting for someone who didn’t.
listener @ 360
The sad irony is that if the rationalization for the resolution had been *true* (i.e., to show Saddam that we meant business and thereby force him to readmit inspectors), it would have been a brilliant success. Saddam *was* intimidated, and he *did* let the inspectors in.
But that was never what Bush really wanted. He actually had success in his hands, but he wouldn’t be satisfied with anything less than a shiny new war to make him feel all strong and hard.
It seems to me that both Edwards and Obama (and completely forget H. Clinton) are a little too willing to sway in the direction of the Dem power mongers in the DLC.
Here’s the Obama dissing Dean link:
http://www.crosswalk.com/1334704/
listener @ 362
Ah, yes. Democrats-need-to-be-more-religion (i.e. Christian)-friendly process talk.
Pretty bad that McAuliffe (of all people) was defending Dean while Obama was dissing him! Especially given that Obama was on Dean’s first Dean Dozen list. Some thanks. Another Dem who disses Dems. No thanks.
Al Gore,
You’ve run. So don’t run again. Declare for the presidency, then go on with your interests and engagements. make one campaign ad, then stay out of it. Debate. That’s it. Let us do the rest. You will win without campaigning. Don’t go through that again. You’ve given us your all. Declare, let us do the rest.
Eli @ 362
Yeah. But why couldn’t Congress see it when mamy of us suspected it? Gore and Dean said it from the beginning, as did a few others like Kucinich.
Jan @ 366
-grin-
I like the cut of your jib.
Can you just see the apoplectic expressions in the DLC? ;-)
Eli, you utilize some anquished math. Let’s just say there were not enough Democrats that spoke up against the lies when standing up was critical.
Please, name a “progressive” Democratic senator that is not a captive of corporate interests.
Hey, I can’t stand Liberman but if one was going to be objective and could possibly look past the war (like Edward’s “go get em” quote), then Liberman had a “progressive” voting record as sterling as any you might mention but to think he was not a captive of corporate interests as much any other current “progressive” senator would be a stretch. I do give an exception to Feingold and a few others.
Yes, Al, please run!
jan @ 365
That could almost work. Actually, if Bush could run for a third term, I think it *would* work.
Mark @ 368
I have to go to bed, so I’ll just go with the list of Senators who voted against the bankruptcy “reform” bill, plus some of the new Senators like Bernie Sanders, Sherrod Brown, John Tester, I think Whitehouse, and possibly Webb. Don’t know enough about McCaskill.
Pretty weak.
G’nite all…
And RE-ELECT AL GORE!!! Yeeeaaaagggghhhhhhh!!
Al Gore and John Edwards… set history aright!
Gore lost my vote in 2000 when he pandered to the Elian nuts (not that it mattered in this state), epitimizing what’s wrong with clever, calculating poiticians (like Hillary and Kerry).
I love what he’s done since, and would support him above any other candidate in 2008.
Give us GORE S’MORES – candy for electoral junkies!
Looks like Al’s been eating some lately, but he could get into training and be ready for a great October surprise. (Right after the Nobel for global warming warning.)
Anyway, I like the sound of Gore-Edwards, Gore-Clark, Gore-Dean, or Gore-Obama — as long as it’s Gore at the top of the ticket.
The pain of that “loss” in 2000 obviously struck him like a harpoon to the heart, but he’s survived and I think it’s only made him a better, deeper man. He’d also be a better President now.
RE-ELECT GORE IN ‘08!
jan @ 366
Declare, let us do the rest.
You are an authentic patriot, sir. Please. For you country…
We won’t let you down.
Lead us through the darkness…
there are actually quite a few choices out there in fantasy politics…
gore… paired with clark, edwards, feingold, webb, richardson, or webb
attorney general henry waxman
sec. state richardson
sec. defense webb or clark
press secretary olbermann
white house toilet duty schrum
Oklahoma kiddo @ 176
Yeah. Unfortunately, it’s the ONLY way I could ever bring myself to support her. And a Harris poll released today says I’m not alone – 50% of Americans won’t vote for her either.
NUMEROLOGY – regarding U.S. Presidents, what is the significance of these three numbers:
8, 12, 8?
8 years after Richard M. Nixon lost the 1960 Presidential election, RMN is elected President of the U.S. (and re-elected).
12 years after Ronald Reagan lost the 1968 Republican Party Presidential nomination, the finest Alzheimer’s inflicted president this nation ever had is elected President of the U.S. (for two terms, also)
8 years after George H. W. Bush lost the 1980 Republican Party Presidential nomination, the father of Governor George Bush is elected POTUS.
Republicans recirculate their “losers” and ELECT them! (Although the press corpse in collusion with the Military-Industrial-Educational Infotainment-Energy-Pharmacological-Medical complex has quite a bit to do with that phenomenon).
Why not Gore in 2008? Sheesh, he actually WON the fucking election in 2000, except for the 5-4 thingee.
But should Gore run, it will not be enough for the liberal blogosphere to have his back … direct confrontation with the story tellers of the MSM, hell, attack them before they attack Gore, and somehow or other convince the financial and corporate elites that Gore IS their man.
When the Republican Congressional Aides staged their Brooks Brothers Riot in the Miami-Dade Courthouse, we liberals dithered and failed to fly into Miami ourselves. If we had taken control of that hallway with our own bodies – if we had personally gathered the gumption to confront those raging irresponsible and gleeful assholes – we could have saved our nation from the Coup of 2000.
We failed, and left it to “the system.”
When these same asshole clowns gathered around Gore’s hotel all day and all night, threatening his family and denying them the chance to even sleep during the recount days – and the local sheriff failed to provide adequate protection – we did not show up on the street to make these assholes accountable. Once again, we left Al Gore feeling friendless and alone.
Why should we expect the man to put himself and his family at personal risk of a repeat?
In 2000 and again in 2004, the Repredators used the internet for organizing, planning, and active involvement in overwhelming the process. Perhaps now the tide is changing and Americans with some sense of character and respect will feel confident enough to actually get their asses up off the couch and out on the street.
We’ll see. Soon.
“Where’s Karl?”
“We’re here with the eviction papers.”
(Someone looking over shoulder,
hollering, “Where’s the rope?”)
It isn’t often that a nation gets a chance to put right what once went wrong.
Al Gore can give the United States that chance, and all he has to do is say two little words:
“I’m in.”
Late to the thread, but I must concur.
My message to Al:
Mr. Congressman, Senator, Vice President, Almost President:
You sure could help us. A LOT. I know you know it. You’re qualified. Hell, you already won it once.
Please? Help?
Please, Mr. Gore…your country needs you. You are The Best choice to lead this country out of the mess that two waaaaaaay-too-looooonnnng terms of Rethuglican administration have created.
I’ve had a Gore 2008 bumper sticker on my car for the past YEAR, and I’m just as proud of it today as I was the day I put it on.
(Too bad my husband can’t say that about his Bush/Cheney sticker, huh? Hehe)
Re-elect Gore 2008… I like that. Imagine the contrast between 8 years of Gore competency and Bush ineptitude.
RUN AL RUN!
Seriously, what do we have to do to get him to make the leap? You’ll win this time, Al, and win big!
I think Al is our only chance to get out of this quagmire in a decade or less. I’m begging too.
GO AL GO ! GO FDL!
Al Gore would be the absolute best Democratic candidate! Have Al choose Russ Finegold as his running mate. A man who, like Al, saw how wrong getting involved in Iraq would be. I have serious issues with Hillary ( who seriously always seems to be triagulating), and Obama (who is very charismatic but I don’t know enough specifics about…save for the fact that when he entered the Senate he picked “Lie-berman” to be his “mentor”, when he could have picked anyone else!)
This country needs someone who can hit the ground running! We don’t have time for a learning curve!
Absolutely! Hopefully we can give a little back after all he’s given us!
Great article posted in the Baltimore Sun yesterday describing how Al Gore is ‘once again ahead of the curve.
http://www.baltimoresun.com/ne…..-headlines
And if you need some Al, while he’s out teaching his slide show to some of the Britains Leaders, don’t forget Al Gore has started a blog called Al’s Journal with some thoughts and videos from previsous testimony at:
http://blog.algore.com/
And finally, it’s only a couple days away, but Mr. Gore’s Birthday is Saturday March 31.
It is your destiny (said in dramatic, Vader-esque tones).
Don’t make us beg!! (But if it will help, I’ll beg.) Run, Al!!!!
I’ll BEG!!! :)
My car plate
It’s your turn Al.
Enjoy.
Dear Al,
Take back what was taken from you. After listening to your compelling expose’ on global warming, and how we really don’t have a choice but to act…I think maybe that same rationale applies to whether you really do have a choice of running or not. Seems to me…you must! It is so much bigger than you now…here the clarion call my friend.
cliff
Al is a smart guy. He knows he won’t be treated fairly and doesn’t see any point in signing up for needless aggravation that won’t accomplish anything anyway.
It would be nice if things were different, but they aren’t. Deal with it – Al is.
Seems to me, if he has to deal with the distortions and lies coming out of the Special Interest fed Orgs and Congress now, just trying to get awareness on Global Warming, you might as well take the heat, but be able to make the changes needed from top for it.
Al,
Please run even though it won’t be much fun. Those who can, must do. Especially now. The current field can’t hack it.
Thanks,
Voting
Please, Al. You’d get my check mark. And I’d even give you my time.
Hoping that all this media frenzy regarding Gore is foreplay for another run for the Whitehouse….
Please, please be true!….
I’m begging too! I voted for you once and I’d do it again in a heartbeat! Please, please, please, run!
to paraphrase morrissey,
‘please, please, please, let us, let us, let us get a candidate we can stand.’
a president for the 21st century!
it’s not like you didn’t win already!
run al, run, no one can beat you!
no kucinich
no obama
no clark
maybe edwards
never hillary
fitz!
The man could not even out debate George Bush.
Here’s a perfect example. Anyone who knows anything about debate will tell you that Al mopped the floor with that idiot Bush, who’d have been disqualified and thrown out of a real debate the first time he interrupted Gore. (interrupting your opponent is a BIG no-no in competitive debate – you get your chance to rebut when it’s your turn, not before)
But thanks to the lying anatomyparts in the media, “everybody” knows that Bush won. Well, everybody except for actual debaters.
Gore/Clark 08
Realist @ 404
Al Gore made an absolute fool out of himself; he actually left his podium and went over to Bush, hyperventilating all the time, and made incoherent statements to Bush, while coughing and acting strange to say the least. Maybe by collegiate or high school rules you believe Gore won those debates but even applying those standards, Gore came out the sure loser. But the real issue in a “presidential debate” is who looks better. And Gore disgraced himself. Gore remains a confused pompous rich kid as does Bush. Neither one deserves to be president
