The Turtles

As I reach completion of my very first solo record this week, I now get to the fun part of assembling my team to get it out to the world. One of my first tasks is to find a decent manager (please see above You Tube).
Any suggestions????

Hank!!!
I love those guys from The Turtles. This video clip is from a DVD that came with a box set released in the mid 90s by Rhino. Funny stuff – great to see it on YouTube.
Flo & Eddie! The FLOrescent lighthouse & EDifice!!!
Just finished watching Bush complain about Congress and the Iraq supplemental. Ooh, he’s pissed. Got blotchy face.
“Filled with Pork. Doesn’t support support the troops. Has no chance of passing. Veto. Veto. Veto. Blah Blah Blah. Arbitrary timetable. Blah blah blah. Restrictions on the military commanders. Blah Blah Blah.”
You know what I say?
Good.
Fuck you, George.
How you doing egregious? I have a question for you about Manuka Honey, a type of honey you can only get from New Zealand that is said to have great healing properties for persistent open wounds. What do you know, and if you do know something, is it worth trying? I’ve had this same current open wound for several months that won’t heal that is in a spot on my leg that has had this same type of wound off and on for ten years now.
I remember being six and having my six-year old friend play that 45 on his close-and-play (in Black Earth, Wisconsin). The line “oh, how is the weather” struck me as so strange. A first, puzzling encounter with a conscious non sequitur.
Anyway, congratulations on completing the album. I play that vid of “Infancy of a Disaster” quite frequently, and get that heavy, deliciousriff caught in my noggin. At first I was sure that you had shot that video at the Hotel Standard, but then I realized that there were probably a lot of locations with pools overlooking the city where you live. Hope you tour soon.
Fini FiniTOOBZ! @ 3
My booking agent sent this YouTube to me yesterday. Through all of that shit, it’s so great that at least Flo & Eddie are Happy Together.
Happiness is the best revenge.
Stories like this are why I’m a blogger and not a rock musician.
Of course, the worst thing of all is when your boyfriend/girlfriend/husband/wife decides to manage your career. Then you lose out on all levels.
swag @ 7
Thanks so much swag. No the video was not shot at The Standard, but in top secret locations in my neighborhood of Silverlake/Echo Park LA. I’m glad that riff gets caught in your noggin’.
TRex @ 9
Frightening isnt it? All too common too…managers are either Great or they are Scum, they never find a middle ground. Many times they end up being both – Great Scum.
TRex @ 10
Unless you’re Celine what’s her name.
Fini FiniTOOBZ! @ 6
Hey FiniFunami!
Done any giant cannonballs into the lake lately?
Open wounds are really tough. While I don’t know personally about honey there are may be something to it, I worry a little about the cost and maybe good ol’ Indiana bees can make this for you.
I would use heat to bring circulation to the area, but that’s just a habit and not medical knowledge.
As to how I’m doing thanks for inquiring, am just now beginning to prepare for trip #30 to the children’s hospital in St. Petersburg. Sure hope this one goes better. What a country. I guess that’s why I’m there, to help make it better. Need to remember that.
Donita! Fini!
I highly recommend that you talk with the master – Howie Klein.
If I was in your position, I’d want someone I could really trust on my side. Howie’s your man.
The best show I ever saw was Flo&Eddie at the Roxy in 1975 at the launch of “Illegal, Immoral and Fattening”. The names Flo&Eddie come from “The Phlorescent Leech and Eddie” which were the names they used when they first joined the Mothers of Invention. Due to contractual restrictions made early in their career, Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan were prevented from using the name “The Turtles”, as well as their own names, in a musical context.
teh funny!
passed on to a few friends who can appreciate it even more.
good luck with that manager thing…
I have a very good friend who fits the bill (name withheld, for obvious reasons). If you’re serious, drop me an email and I’ll look into hooking you guys up. No guarantees, mind you.
TRex @ 10
Or when you let your shrink manage you like Kiss did.

Thanks for the music, you are a talented lady.
I started playing guitar 5 years ago and still suck but man, when the shit hits the fan in my emotional life my guitar and the music I make are a saving grace.
As Mr. Zappa said-Music is the best, I would go further and say it is the only thing I can think of that truly unites us all-pan globe

Whew, yeah.
Still, Kiss have never seemed to be particularly hurting for cash and exposure.
Prof @ 22
Interestingly, it’s not a bill most Democrats are happy with. Bush could have accepted that and just thanked them for the money.
But, NOOOO…
Instead, he throws another temper tantrum, and by vowing such steadfast opposition, makes the Democrats look good. And makes the bill look like a far stronger stand of opposition than it really is.
Thanks, George!
Maddy @ 20
Wayne Kramer is da bomb!
A very funny video! Especially for anyone who has ever been in, or has had friends in, the music biz.
Too bad my father in law has retired. He managed a bunch of people, starting with Duke Ellington, then Jose Feliciano, The New Christy Minstrels, The Crusaders, Barry White, etc.
On a positive note, one of my friends has had the same manager for close to 40 years and hardly ever a cross word, and certainly no legal disputes, between them. Maybe because they are both terrific people. Okay, there was that little dustup with David Geffen, but it’s all in the past and they both came out of it intact.
Donita Sparks @ 19
Or poor Brian Wilson with Eugene Landy.
Donita,
This is another..down tempo and beautiful from Sam Cooke:

Thanks for being a musician
Wow. Don’t go with Manager 1. Or do go with #1.
Congrats on the album. I’ve had the song from the Jules and Rankin *Twas the Night Before Christmas* stuck in my head since early in the week. I can’t suggest a manager, but I can suggest a hidden track:
Christmas chimes are calling Santa, Santa
Every heart recalling Santa, Santa
Come on Ol’ Kris Kringle down the Milky Way
Christmas chimes are calling Santa we need you today.
Hmm… I think I want Congress to deliver me an early Christmas present. Or maybe I don’t have faith that they will do it and I’m subconsciously hoping that Santa will pony up.
Anyway, it would make for a wonderful hidden track or addition to the live show in a few seasons. You add it to your repertoire, and I’ll be at every gig in the Pac NW.
Morris Sheppard @ 28
A good manager is really the hardest team member to find. Most are bull-jive. The good ones are few and far between, but can make all the difference in the world.
Here’s the seed of a meme in response to the claims that the Dem’s are trying to micromanage the Iraq war. “Well, some one has to manage the war”
Probably better variations could be found.
How you doing egregious? I have a question for you about Manuka Honey, a type of honey you can only get from New Zealand that is said to have great healing properties for persistent open wounds. You might try this Ayurvedic recipe:
Make a salve of equal parts of honey, ghee(clarified butter), and turmeric and apply to the wound. All three ingredients have antibiotic and healing properties. (turmeric
is an intense yellow-colored spice that might stain clothes; so cover the ointment with a Bandaide.)
It is the only thing I have found to work, and rather quickly, when I get a deep and quite painful crack next to my thumb nail due to harsh winter weather.
Morris Sheppard @ 29
I’ve read pros and cons. I’ve heard that Landy was responsible (initially) for getting Brian “out of bed” and working again. Then of course he wanted to contribute lyrics just like Metallica’s shrink in the documentary ‘Some Kind of Monster”. It’s like first they’re helpful father figures, and then they want to creatively express themselves…in their client’s art. Weird. They need analysis too.
Kalliope @ 34
Where should I look for or how does one make ghee? I remember reading about turmeric before but thanks for the reminder and for the recipe.
Donita Sparks @ 32
Bull-jive! Hadn’t heard that since Sanford and Son. Say, it’s starting to feel like Old Home Week around here, and I don’t even know anybody.
I had some contact with both Brian, who impressed me as a very sweet and gentle, if confused, man and Landy. How and why too complicated to go into now. Yes, Landy did help Brian, who was pretty much a basket case, but then let his ego run away with him. It always amazes me how some folk get star struck and blinded by the pop culture biz. Your comment about how “they want to creatively express themselves…in their client’s art” is spot on. Probably because they are creatively frustrated themselves.
According to TPMuckracker – there is more documents coming from the DOJ. I guess they have had time to go through all the incriminating documents and redact what they needed to.

You are probably correct. I seemed to remember reading the Florescent Lighthouse and Edifice in Rolling Stone once upon a time but I did recall it was a contract situation…
The US House of Rep. passed the Iraq War Emergency Supplemental Appropriations bill with milestones and conditions to begin troop withdrawals, require Bush to follow army policy with regard to deployment readiness and rotations home, and to prohibit permanent US military bases in Iraq. President Bush announced he will veto.
Freshman Rep. Patrick Murphy (D-PA) spoke in favor of the bill. I watched him on CSPAN. Hoyer, Murtha, and Obey also spoke in support of this bill. They gave substantive reasons for supporting it. All of them credit Pelosi for bringing it together.
Write you Reps and the leaders in the house and thank them for their efforts to bring this grave mistake of a war in Iraq to an end.
I saw this letter to Rep. Patrick Murphy on http://WWW.CONGRESS.ORG and wanted to share it with you:

I hope it is not OT.
You might be able to buy ghee in a healthfood store or an Indian food store or order online where Ayurveda products are sold; but, it is also very easy to make: Over medium heat melt unsalted butter; cook it over low heat, occasionally skim off the foam rising to the top; when all the milk solids have dropped to the bottom and are slightly brown, the clarifid butter will have a delicious nutty aroma. Strain it through a cheese cloth, and you have your clarified butter, ready for cooking and medicinal purposes. (It does not turn rancid even when kept on the counter, but I like to refrigrate it anyway.)
After some initial trepidation, as I try to make it a point to not traffic in any of my friends’ contacts, fame, connections or personal history, (which is how I stay friends with them) I submit that maybe you should contact the manager I referred to above. All he could do is say no. I can vouch that he is a pretty honorable guy, and extremely experienced. His name is Elliot Roberts, of Lookout Management in Santa Monica.
If you call, ask for Bonnie, tell her you’re looking for management and that I thought you should speak to Elliot.
Stopped in a casino resort in Mesquite, Nevada last summer to get a cup of coffee. On my way in I noticed that Flo and Eddie were headlining that week.
I saw them in Charlotte in the mid-70’s and they almost filled a large concert hall.
Now, they’re in Mesquite? I thought, anyone who records a song as perfect as “Happy Together” or “Elenore” ought to be declared a national treasure and allowed to retire without cares or worries or expenses.
Best part of Bang A Gong is the line “she’s got a hubcap diamond star halo…”
At least, I think that’s what he’s singing.
Morris Sheppard @ 45
Thanks Morris, I’ve heard of Lookout. Thanks for the hookup!
Slothrop @ 47
I LOVE that line too. Perfect.
Slothrop @ 46
I know, go figure.
Product plug. If you are asking about how to get a good manager, check out Bobby Borg’s website. He was a big time drummer in the 1980s. He has a book about dealing with the record companies and all that stuff. “The Musician’s handbook.”

We’ll Donita, your Flo and Eddie almost made me piss my pants. Those guys rule!! I think The Polyphonic Spree are a bunch of mouth breathers………….but other than that great playlist.
Good luck with management!
Sid
Hey, thanks for the most excellent Flo and Eddie video!! Love those guys. Saw them live back in the day when they were fronting for Zappa.
Don’t miss Wong Kar Wai’s
Happy Together starring Tony Leung and Leslie Chung
Donita Sparks @ 48
My pleasure. If you need any help w/Bonnie or Elliot, let me know. My email is in the link on my name. Of course I can’t guarantee anything, but I have known Elliot for a really long time. He manages, or has managed at various times, Neil Young, Tom Petty, CSNY, Joni Mitchell, Pearl Jam, Devo, etc., etc.
Good luck! And, keep me informed.
Donita, I admit right up front I know nothing about the music biz.
But the fundamentals of business remain the same no matter what industry you’re in — food, retail, manufacturing, you name it.
If I could make a suggestion, it would be to have a good CPA who is willing to ask the questions you may not think of, and an attorney who is willing to go to bat for you. I’d also seriously consider setting up a limited liability company so that you are personally firewalled and protected from any losses experienced by your business (think of this as a very cheap insurance policy).
And then get a business manager. The other two can keep the manager on the straight and narrow and explain all the crap a manager might throw at you.
(Wonder if Stephen Parrish CPA is out there? you got any suggestions for the lady so she doesn’t end up with wieners 1 through umpteen as in the YouTube’d example above?)
Rayne @ 56
thanks for the good advice Rayne.
Sure hope FDL blogs from the Aipac trial coming up in June. This is at JTA(Jewish Telegraph Agency)
Calling out Satterfield
By Ron Kampeas
USGO-2 will be taking your questions now.
If that sounds cryptic it’s not entirely inappropriate – USGO-2 is kind of cryptic. He’s otherwise known as David Satterfield, the top Iraq adviser to U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. But, as U.S. Government Official no. 2, he’s the unindicted co-conspirator Increase Font Size:
in the classified information case against Steve Rosen and Keith Weissman, respectively the former foreign policy chief and top Iran analyst for the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.
Count one in the August 2005 indictment includes meetings between Rosen and USGO-2 as an “overt act,” in which Satterfield – then second in charge at the State Department’s Middle East section – allegedly relayed classified information to Rosen, and which Rosen allegedly re-relayed to colleagues at AIPAC and to Israeli officials.
So why is Rosen out of a job, under constant FBI watch and facing an Espionage Act trial — and Satterfield climbing the diplomatic ladder? It’s a question begging for an answer. And while Satterfield appears frequently before Jewish audiences, no one asks it.
Next opportunity: March 27 at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, when Satterfield speaks on “Iraq: Prospects for Peace at Home and Progress with its Neighbors.” WINEP was, after all, spun off from AIPAC back in the late 1980s, its events are attended by the pro-Israel community’s best and brightest and I know that a lot of its staff’s attitude toward the Rosen-Weissman case can be summed up in the unexpandable acronym, WTF?
In fact, there are a lot of folks who interact with Satterfield who should be curious about this case, not least journalist. The unprecedented use in this case of a 1917 statute criminalizing the receipt of classified information could seriously crimp our profession if prosecutors are successful.
Was Satterfield setting Rosen up? Was the information classified? Larry Franklin, the midlevel Pentagon analyst whose guilty plea in the same case helped spur it forward, is facing hard time, so why not Satterfield? In fact, all sides in the case acknowledge that “leakers” like Franklin – or, allegedly, Satterfield – are more vulnerable under legal precedent than “leakees.”
The defense wants to haul in a bunch of U.S. officials, not least including Satterfield’s boss, Rice. Whether they’re successful will be determined in the next pre-trial phase, due to begin next month, when the prosecution is likely to challenge much of the witness list. (The trial itself is set to begin on June 4.)
The federal judge in the case, T.S. Ellis III, has, however, already made it clear to the prosecution that he will not countenance a challenge to Satterfield’s testimony – but that still doesn’t mean Satterfield will testify. Satterfield may be able to shield himself behind State Department rules that allow the government to keep diplomats off the witness stand. Those rules might not hold in this case, and the defense is sure to challenge them if the department makes the effort. But meantime, it’s worth asking – does Satterfield even intend on invoking the rules that would bar him from testifying?
In case you’re wondering, yes, I’ve asked him. That ended that short interview (”No comment, gotta go” was more or less the reply). Doesn’t mean we shouldn’t keep trying. I’ll be there Tuesday, but I’m leaving it up to others to ask.
In case you’re also wondering, USGO-1 is Kenneth Pollack, who met with Rosen and Weissman in 2000 when he was a Clinton administration national security councilor. Pollack, unlike Satterfield, does talk: He says he did not relay classified information to the two (in fairness, the indictment does not clearly allege that he did – only that he had access to classified information that Rosen allegedly relayed to a journalist later in the day.) Pollack, also, is not charged. The defense wants him

No problem, Donita. I filed for a Limited Liability Corporation (LLC) for the first time this past year all by myself, only cost me $300 — but it limits any lawsuits against what I do as a business to the assets of the LLC, and not my personal assets (or those of my spouse). You’d be better off having an attorney or CPA do it for you if you don’t have the background, but don’t let them spook you and use a bunch of business hooey into spending a fortune on this.
And I think I’m about to get a manager of my own. Well, maybe more like a business representative. I could use the work right now. Too bad I don’t have something singular like a first solo record to bait the hook with, very envious and proud of you.
Yea Flo & Eddie!! I too saw them in 1975, opening for Bob Seger in Detroit at the Michigan Theater, in what turned out to be the warm-up concert for the show that was recorded as Live Bullet. Flo & Eddie *almost* stole the show — absolutely fabulous!!
Good luck with the whole manager thing, Donita. Not a musician, so no useful advice to share on that front.
Late to the party, but I want to wish you luck Donita as you take the next step on your journey.
Kathleen @ 58 Thank you for the fine briefing on the upcoming trial. Here we have another naional security issue with the stench of corruption, possibly treason, and a unique inside view into what has been going on in our government. Thanks again. Always good to see you here at the lake.
I have always said that the thing to do is find a manager who can make you enough money that you’ll still have some after they rip you off.
Slothrop @ 47
I’m still pondering the lines
“You can punk the skunks of freedom
With your jeweled Etruscan knife…”
from ‘Groove A Little’… doubt it’ll ever make any sort of sense, but I keep pondering. But then, who needs a TV when I’ve got my T. Rex?
The Turtles covered the song “Lady Oh” by Judee Sill, and aside from a couple of Bessie Smith songs, I do believe that was the first hit written by a woman, for a woman.
Ah, “Cheree”! How timely – just last week at SXSW, the awesome Vietnam closed their set with a cover. One of the best things I saw all week.
(Incidentally, it was not too far from where I saw L7 / Helmet / Ed Hall at SXSW about a million years ago…now THAT was a rock show.)
Jesus, we are old.
