…..like usenet, many or maybe most people are turned off by the clubishness. Me, I just lurk and only occasionally scream into the void (and no, I don’t expect a response to any of my comments).

That made me think some. I have been reading this blog several times a day for the past few months. Was here for the verdict moment.

And I absolutely abhor cliques on the internet. And USUALLY I end up never returning to the site. So why do I keep returning here? Because of the value of the original posts. And that tells me that there is something really GREAT to be had here at FDL in spite of the cliques. Cause if I judged this site solely based on the social aspect? I would never return. Let me clarify… I love reading the threads of comments. But 80% are completely unnecessary for my edification.

I just wanted to highlight the point that people return in spite of the coffee house environ and that says TONS about those who run this site.

As long as people are airing certain dislikes, maybe I please say that the race to be at the top of the comment threads is truly annoying. First! Fitz! Jane! TRex! It’s just poor form to take up people’s time and mental space with NOTHINGNESS. (God, I feel better just having said that)

What I like about dkos comment system is you can absolutely ignore the extraneous conversations that have nothing to do with the topic. A lot of people, like myself, literally only read for information and have no need to join or be inundated with coffee house atmospheres.

I think it was your/our Blue America request for contributions listing candidates to support. They allowed the contributor(s) the option of financial support to any or all of the candidates. I was impressed by the list and wanted to donate and let the PAC distribute the proceeds as they saw fit.

Because the only way to contribute was to do so through the internet such as by credit card. I took the time to write the webmaster explaining that there are many of us who either don’t have a credit card or would like to contribute with a check or money order through the USPS. Also mentioned the obvious; those of us with limited financial means would like to contribute to so many deserving PACs or sites but of necessity had to carefully pick and choose. My request was answered by telling me that if I would send my mailing address they would in return send me the mailing addresses of all the candidates they had listed so I could make a contribution to them personally.

I hope that Blue America isn’t the one listed here and if not please accept my apologies for misunderstanding.

The point is, there are many of us who must make the hard decision(s) of who to give some of our limited resources to while not being able to give to others just as deserving. All solicitations should furnish a mailing address as well as internet address if they want to reach a sizable segment of the population. Just a suggestion. And I have been saving up to contribute to FDL and will do so in the near future. Please be sure I (and many others) have a mailing address for this purpose.

I took the survey and made a suggestion, and want to expand on it a bit. I suggested that you do weekly or daily subscriber funded podcasts. I for one would gladly pay a reasonable fee (I think iTunes sells individual podcasts for 1.99, but sometimes subscriptions end up with a smaller fee per podcast) to hear roundtable discussions or just conversations between any combination of Jane, Christy, Marcy, Pach, or Trex and special guests. The reason for this is that there is such obvious camaraderie between you all that, even though we all can read and participate in the comments and you all are wonderful about making us all feel welcome and included, I often feel left out of a lot of the spirit and emotion of the group. I think a podcast would be a wonderful way to share that. I know I really enjoyed the Plame panel discussion at Yearly Kos. I think more of that kind of activity would add a lot to the site.

I’d be delighted to become a monthly supporter – but I do hope the Lake can keep going without going the Salon route.

(Many of my less tech-savvy friends’ spam/ad blockers prevent them from using Salon’s daypass…)

Have them download the Google toolbar; sites can be allowed in very easily on a site-by-site basis.
