TRex and I were talking this morning about Rove's little shop of political horrors. And we both had this flashback to the brilliant Steve Martin dentist bit from the movie, Little Shop Of Horrors. Let us all pause for a moment and contemplate the genius that is Steve Martin.
Why is it, exactly, that Rove gets to have nine political lives, while every available fall guy around him takes the blame for any and all scandals that arise. To wit:
Some questions for this morning. Is this the point where Senators push themselves forward to fill the perceived void that Rove may be leaving in his legal distractions? Senators are not used to being told what to do, by the WH or anyone else, and the behind the scenes and public chafing at being given marching orders by Rove has been interesting to watch. Once that bit has been removed from their mouths — as it seemed to be in all of the Republican opposition to Miers — it is awfully hard to get them back in the bridle.
But which faction of Senators will win the wrestling match? The more moderate Specter judicial wing, the Christian Conservative Brownback group, or the maverick competence-touting McCain and Hegel crew? It's going to be an interesting tea-leaf reading experience over the next few weeks as the next phase of judicial nominee contemplation occurs.
And does this mean that Rove re-asserts himself as indespensable, using the problems with this nomination to wedge himself back through the crack in the door that had widened through all the Traitorgate mess? Does he stay in place, whether or not he gets indicted, because Bush is now too afraid to make decisions without him again? Or has Rove already overplayed his hand by putting himself out in the press as the "Bush's brain" kind of guy and the Preznit has had enough? This dynamic will be interesting to watch as well.
Finally, Ed Gillespie and a lot of other GOP operatives have been much more visible over the last few days. Has the beauty pageant started already to select the Rove replacement, regardless of what happens with the legal case, because Rove has become so radioactive? Or does this mean that Andy Card should be watching his back?
Well, what it meant was that Andy Card needed to watch his back. Take that to heart, Mr. Gonzales: Andy Card had been a lifelong buddy of President Bush, and yet that did not matter in this context — saving Rove's bacon was the key concern. Josh Bolten was brought in to provide new blood cover, after Card was bumped out, so that Rove could continue to operate his "shop" in peace with Bolten taking the heat for bad results. Ditto for Scooter Libby, who was clearly stupid enough to believe that Rove wouldn't rat him out to save his own sorry hide. (Ha!) And on and on.
Honestly, at what point does the Republican establishment decide that the Rule of Karl is all about protecting Karl's interests, no matter how the party's interests in the long term may be run into the ground?
The folks at The Muck have grabbed the report this morning from MSNBC on the President's call to Gonzales reaffirming his personal support. And the NYTimes and the WaPo have much more on the Presidential support phone call. In case you've been asking yourself whether laws may have been broken, this op-ed says, "Yes."
I was watching MSNBC later in the morning, and they had Mike Allen discussing the fact that his highly placed sources within the White House were still telling him that a short list was being developed for Gonzales replacement. As emptywheel said in the comments earlier, Allen's sources have tended to be in the Dan Bartlett (read: Rove minion) camp, and you have to wonder whether "Rove's shop" is pushing a wee bit too hard on the CYA angle this morning, don't you?
Could it be because the Senate and house Judiciary committees are deciding within the next day or so whether subpoenas for Rove, Miers and a number of others whose names are sprinkled throughout the DoJ docudump will be issued? I don't know about you guys, but I see a bright, shiny object being dangled in front of the press — and Mike Allen, like the good little Rover message delivery service that he is, running around with the bait trying to distribute it far and wide. How about you?
And, just for amusement's sake, as cbl reminds us, the bulk of the recent precedent for WH staffers being subpoenaed to testify before Congress comes from the Whitewater hearings. Hello, Dan Burton…how's your day?
Just take a peek at this LATimes story from today regarding some of the information contained in the e-mails released last night — the level of concern for political CYA — and then add "Rove's shop" into the mix in terms of willingness to do whatever oppo is necessary. And think about the internal machinations that are going on right now between the Gonzales' loyalists, the long time Bushies, and the Rove loyalists. And go back to this, from one of the many e-mails, and a question that Mary4 raised this morning:
Who will determine whether whether this requires the President’s attention?
Was the President really never told and did everything actually proceed without anyone knowing the answer to this question?
This comes back to that same question that I ask myself time and time again about George Bush: was he completely in the loop on all of this, or was he out of the loop and disengaged entirely from high level decision-making in his own Administration? Who wants to go first with an answer?
Meanwhile, folks are still combing through the DoJ e-mails. TRex is right — it truly is a treasure trove.

Why does Rove keep getting away with this s**t?
Because our Prezident thinks he will die (literally and figuratively) without his “brain”, that’s why.
he doesn’t want to be in the loop. he wants to ride his bike, snooze and not read printed material. me thinks he has early onset alzheimers.

Why is it? Because Bush likes it that way.
Where is the investigation going re Hastert and Turkish Gov. contributions?

They kicked a fire ant nest when they dropped those documents.
There are grubby little fingerprints everywhere.
And Rove is in this up to his beady little eyes.

George Bush: was he completely in the loop on all of this, or was he out of the loop and disengaged entirely from high level decision-making in his own Administration?
Is that a rhetorical question?
I think that GWB is purposefully kept as far out of “the loop” as is humanly possible, except when he’s need to come in and lie to the public that he was in on everything all along (e.g. insta-declassification).

Bush is more out of the loop than the press secretary.
I’m still scratching my head on this one. What the hell is up?!
If we go with the sinking ship metaphor, they’re jettisoning all this stuff to save their necks. But they’re getting down to stuff they need to survive — engines & drinking water.
Or maybe it’s like they’re running from a pack of hungry wolves (run, Waxman!) and they’re tossing their own steak dinners to slow down their pursuers in hopes they can get away (run out the clock?).
But there’s so much in these docu-dumps that compromises their own necks. Why?
There’s always the Shiny Objects factor.
Are they really that stupid or incompetent that they’re just letting it out? Oops?
A lot of this “process” was being planned in mid-November, post-election and when they’d be well aware of the subpoena prospect. (Some of this stuff made sense when they were doing it pre-election, when Karl’s The Math and hubris might explain it better.)
Is it desperation, indicative that there’s a serious firewall protecting a precious few individuals and some *really* nasty secrets?
Who’s on the short list of those invited inside that firewall?
So many of their cronies have been sacrificed — how many more will go willingly under that bus, having witnessed the fates of Harriet, Scotty, Sampson, Andy Card? (Is Abu gone yet?)
And there’s been a lot made of a serious rift between the Cheney camp and the Baker/Bush 41 camp. Are there signs here that each is sacrificing the other?
Then there’s the terrifying specter of what truly desperate creatures are capable of doing for self-preservation.
I’m just having trouble trying to make sense of it all. In the midst of reading all these blatant screw-ups, I keep asking Why?
I’d love to hear more thinking from the insightful FDL crew…
Bruce Fine on CSpan 2. Uhoh the conservatives are on the bandwagon. Piling on………….Bob Barr too. This is BIG
Gonzo is outtahere- it’s just a question of when. Caught Andy Card on Hardball(or was it Tucker? I forget) last night – I’ll give him one thing-even after being tossed overboard to save Baby Huey, he’s still loyal to Shrub and defended him to the nines. My take on Gonzo cancelling his appearance before Congress is that he’s busy finding cardboard bxes, and they plan to keep his head below the radar until they can move him out. Christy is right about this being bright shiny object – to distract from the real crime that is occurring in Iraq while Shrub starts to meet resistance from Congress and doesn’t want to lose any more of the pitifully thin support he still has..
Wil @ 40
It is remarkable how fast McCain has become essentially irrelevant. Other warmongering presidential hopefuls and sundry other politicians ought to take note.
“George Bush: was he completely in the loop on all of this, or was he out of the loop and disengaged entirely from high level decision-making in his own Administration? “
I think that Rove cooked up all of the political maneuvering, discusses it in front of Bush and Cheney, Cheney grumbles, Bush picks his nose…
But, it’s still his decision, he says yes, cause he’s a good little boy…

Nope–I’m too cynical to take this seriously. Think they’re ramping up to get the Ds, who now control Congress & who will take presidency in 08. Barr jumped on another sinking ship a couple of years ago, forget exactly what it was, so he’s no indicator of anything.
Betcha they are scrambling to find an AbuG replacement — and this bunch never announces a resignation without having the replacement ducks all lined up at the same presser. If they are doing a shuffle (Chertoff/Townsend) it gets more complicated, since they are making more than one replacement.
Last nite we discussed the bind they are in: finding someone confirmable who will keep the BushCo secrets for the next 21 months. Not sure there’s anyone who fits both criteria.

So let’s see the “moderate” i.e. sellout, blow and fold, Specter voted to rescind what his own office had inserted into the Patriot Act.
McCain was out campaigning and couldn’t be bothered. Ditto for Biden?
Hagel’s vote is very interesting since aside from his stand on the war (which so far has been more words and less action) he continues to be pretty damn conservative.
My dog Jake misses his walks on the rim of those cow sludge ponds

If these lovelies are being hoist on their own keyboards, why don’t Bush and Company communicate with disappearing ink on instantly biodegradable material? (Oh, that would be environmentally responsible.)

I just made a first-time visit to a blog written by a fellow in France. He has a post about the purge that makes an interesting point, and I’m wondering if he’s right, legally.
Here’s the link:
http://thebrainpolice.blogspot.com/
In short, what he’s saying is that the fired prosecutors are getting the attention, but the focus should be on the ones that were kept. He sees that as the side of the issue where the meat is, making it a conspiracy (in the legal sense). It makes me wonder if the prosecutors still in place, and the cases they’re handling are where we should be looking.
I’m way behind in my reading on this topic, so maybe you’ve all been there, done that — but today’s the first that I’ve considered that the real crime might be in work now going on in prosecutors’ offices across the country.
Anyone else detect ahead-on collision coming, between CHENEY and ROVE?
Somewhere in all this mess, Bush’s quail dinner with Karl and “the wife” seems like a clearly defining moment in this DC soap opera.
Ironic, it was quail they were eating.
Can’t imagine Karl roving out in the field with Shooter, ol’ deadeye might “accidentally” chamber a load of buckshot instead of birdshot…
Would that fall under “Executive privelege?”
Seriously. What does Karl have on W? It’s GOT to be something major for Karl to be protected above everything else. I sometimes wonder if W would choose Karl over Laura and Barney. (He’d certainly choose him over the twins).

I was expecting Cruelly Deville, but this one’s got the hair right, at least…
To get back to Christy’s question, Bush is an out of sight out of mind kind of guy. Even if he was told in advance he probably paid little attention to it, gave it a general nod, and promptly forgot about it.
Now that it has blown up, his main interest is not in understanding it or getting to the bottom of it, rather he wants his underlings to make it go away. In his mind that’s what a deciderer does.
I suggest a simpler way of lookingt at anything Bushco does. Since everything they do is about politics, and not policy, that’s where people should start. And maybe that’s why cynical DFH’s looked at the same raw facts as the MSM on this story, and knew, in their Stephen Colbert inspired guts, that there was something fishy.
If you start from the notion that Bush is looking to govern effectively, which, it seems, is the bias of the Washington punditocracy, then actions which on their face are political can be rationalized.
If, as we do, you assume that everything about this administration is about preserving or enhancing their power, then, sadly, you have the most direct line to the motivees behind virtually every action they take.
Assuming the worst these days doesn’t take you far enough. Sad, but true.
i really like what bruce fein et al. are doing wrt their “american freedom agenda”. there are asking presidential candidates to sign on to restoring rule of law and american values like “habeas corpus, end torture and extraordinary rendition, narrow the president’s authority to designate ‘enemy combatants,’ prevent unconstitutional wiretaps and mail openings, protect journalists from prosecution under the Espionage Act”
i hope that the dem presidential candidates will sign on… maybe we can help them do that.

News Grinder @ 85
Right—BTDT–Krugman may have made the point first. Here’s from his 3/12 column.
But the numbers can tell only part of the story. What we really need — and it will take a lot of legwork — is a portrait of the actual behavior of prosecutors across the country. Did they launch spurious investigations of Democrats, as I suggested last week may have happened in New Jersey? Did they slow-walk investigations of Republican scandals, like the phone-jamming case in New Hampshire?
In other words, the truth about that ”overblown personnel matter” has only begun to be told. The good news is that for the first time in six years, it’s possible to hope that all the facts about a Bush administration scandal will come out in Congressional hearings — or, if necessary, in the impeachment trial of Alberto Gonzales.
But you need to do the fired ones before you get to the unfired ones.

Maybe Rove stays because he’s this administration’s designated target for public ire: visibly and audibly offensive, but untouchable so far. Look at how irrational and frustrated we become when we contemplate him.
If this goes the way Cheney/Bush wants it to go, we are going to have 8 years of kabuki, including the “resignations” of many secondary functionaries, while the rape and pillage continue. My guess is that Conyers and Fielding are negotiating WH staff appearances so that the House doesn’t have to subpoena their asses. What Mutant Poodle @93 says. You’ve hit the nail squarely on the head. This describes what the true problem MSM has with us DFH’s. Because they can’t change the way they are constructed they cannot move as quickly to adapt to changing circumstances. They were taught in journalism school to believe that both sides were equal but opposite, not that one was always lying and manipulating and that other only did so accidentally, (because they were clueless as to how to do it, not because they didn’t want to.) Hence the “he said, she said” balance.

Michael Corleone: My offer is this: Nothing.
No matter the impression or the reality re: Bush in the loop, if I am not mistaken only the President may fire/replace USA’s. At some point the cabal cannot avoid Bush being tarred with the decision — whether he’s “The Delegator” or not, Constitutionally (or at least by both pre- and post-PATRIOT ACT law) he has to make the USA decisions. Gonzales’ resignation does not change this basic fact.
I add this whole mess, whatever the outcome, to the stack of High Crimes and Misdemeanors that Waxman, Conyers, Leahy, et al are building. We haven’t gotten to Iraq contractor abuse/war profiteering; Katrina abuse/profiteering; electoral fraud; Congress’ version of Plamegate; illegal wiretapping and such unconstitutional acts; torture and rendition, etc. etc.
The Republicans are coming around slowly, but I still am not disturbed by Pelosi’s statement that “impeachment is off the table”. It will be clear that there is no other solution but to remove Bush and Cheney; I only hope that people can realize it is the only way to end the chain of Watergate, Iran-Contra, Iraq, and who knows what the next Republican President in 20 years will concoct.

Exactly. I’d love to see a list of cases that are now in the works. They might lead us to a treasure trove of now unknown situations the WH is trying to control.

And has been seen, it really takes a supermajority of 60 to invoke cloture — I hope Reid and other Senators can break through the RWCM and communicate the obstructionist agenda of the Republican Senators thus far.
Speculation as to what Rove might have on GWBush to make him

I think that it was Krugman who alerted us to that in another column. Or maybe someone else. But the point is, we didn’t know about it until someone with more media presence cited it.
Steve Martin was Borat of the 70’s. His SNL sketches – “King Tut” & “The Festrunk Brothers” with Dan Aykroyd (A Canadian) … “We are TWO WILD AND CRAZY GUYS !” – are immortal.
It is easy to call Bush “out of the loop”, “dumb” or “beset with early Alzhiemer’s”, but these excuse him from blame as it claims he is not responsible for the catastrophes his office has engendered throughout the world.
This is flat wrong, he wants chaos in Iraq and the Middle East because that is how his family and friends can make billions selling oil at blackmarket prices and weapons.
He wants chaos in America – using the 3 G’s (God, Guns & Gays) to have half of America fight the other half because then he can hold office long enough to grab billions from the treasury.
“Mission Accomplished” meant according to his goals, the mission was accomplished. It is just not the mission that helps America, but it is the mission that plunders America of its wealth, freedoms and standing in the world.
Oil was $17 – $18 a barrel before he invaded Iraq to secure our oil supply and remains at triple that price or higher. This is racketeering at the highest level of office. When congress addresses this racket, it will mean America has turned the corner and is marching back to the values of democracy.

Point #1: The atty’s weren’t fired, they resigned. Therefore, Pres OK not required. If the pres didn’t know, it was a bluff that worked. The USAtty’s are gonna call up the Pres to verify?
Point #2: Pres *is* required to appoint new USAtty’s even though Senate confirmation not required. But please to note that only *one* was actually replaced, despite discussions that replacements were to be ready. So, what fell apart? Looks like the Pres *didn’t* approve and is hanging somebody (Rove?) out to dry, or Rove won’t let the Pres approve and is hanging someone else out to dry.
We could even be dealing with an internal challenge to Rove/Bush. From where? Take back-bearings.

A reading of the book Bush’s Brain shows Karl Rove has been engaging in these politics of destruction since he was a teenager. He did it in college when any other student aspired to leadership in the Young Republicans, destroying that person with lies and innuendo. (And, btw, he went to college for 8 years and never got a degree.) He’s left chaos and mayhem in his path to save himself. He’s still doing it.

hey karen allen –
I had just made a note on my shopping list to pick that book up while out this afternoon -

Let’s hypotheize that Rove would be the last man standing.
It’s a given he has all of GWB’s army history, and certainly much more.
The thing is, does he have stuff to implicate Daddy Bush??? Imagine the repercussions…
AARGH!!! Expletives abound…
Per CNN, the WH and Democrats emerged from their meeting with a deal – Rove & Miers will meet with Senate Judiciary Committee leaders in a PRIVATE MEETING, not under oath for interviews the US Attorney purge scandal.
So many expletives.
What is the Dem leadership getting out of this?
Schumer speaking right now on CNN.

remember – no one from Conyers comm. has stated what they will agree to – this is all just the WH offer
Please Democrats, don’t take this offer.

cbl: As another example of Rove’s treachery and vindictiveness, the author of Bush’s Brainwas placed on the “No Fly” list, and can’t get off.
Schumer doesn’t seem happy about the lack of swearing in on this. He says that he believes Leahy will still have the authority to issue subpoenas.
He says “without a transcript, the discussion would be almost MEANINGLESS”. It’s not clear to me if the “interviews” will be transcribed or not.

twolf1 @ 238
please all, liveblog this as much as you can for those of us who are without cable (it was a choice between cable tv and dsl – guess which i prefer? *g*).
We have to see their testimony. What is said is important, but the sound and sight of Rove testifying enhances the public’s perception by orders of magnitude. Rove, of all people, lives and dies by these very principles.
Think Libby GJ tapes played for the trial jury. No compromises !!!
Conyers may be working in some sort of tandem with Schumer… Conyers gets the basic round and Shumer goes for the oath meat. ??
The unsworn conversations are not so much different from what the ever servile Arlen Specter was talking about yesterday.
Sworn testimony outside the hearings room could take place elsewhere in the Capitol or even at the White House. It would be a step removed from a true public airing of the issues. Somehow I think that the WH will go almost to any lengths to avoid the picture of Karl Rove under oath in a committee hearing room. Forget executive privilege. It would be too much of an accountability moment. And these guys don’t do accountability.

Timing. OK, the Bush clock runs out in 2 years. What will George do? He will take the money and run to Paraguay. He never really wanted the work part, and maybe he can wear a nice generalissimo uniform there.
Dick will take the money and run to Dubai. He’s prolly looking forward to a bit of retirement by now and he’s got lots of businesses to amuse himself with. He’ll probably take up falconry, he can go hawking with the Saudi princes.
BUr what about Karl? He’s not rich, he’s not well-liked, and he’s still young enough to be ambitious. His only talent is getting people elected to positions they are not qualified for. What will the unjust Karl do? Could our Kyle have presidential aspirations?
Impeachement, if not now, when? What good does it do to write a constitution or protect it? Meaningless loss of life doesn’t rise to high crimes? Torture in our names is not enough? Our children are suppose to deal with all of this when they are our age? I worry that they will tear it up.
Karl is a hater and he will always have employment from the likes of Scaife, A*P*C, etc..

I asked yesterday about why Rove is never a target, but the press and the law concentrate on Gonzales and Bush and DOJ. The answer came back that this was about Rove, but apparently the legal strategy is to get him disconnected from the levers of power by messing with the levers–his political clients.
Has it occurred to any of the principals in the cross-hairs of a broadening scandal (like Specter for example) that the Republicans could fight back if they fought together against Rove instead of taking orders from The Enforcer? Some of these politicians and DOJ folks are bound to realize Rove’s threats are empty if they decide to rat him out. Just because Rove leaves no fingerprints on his own documents does not mean he cannot be nailed.
Now, I know you might this a thick-headed observation. Maybe to you (legal folks) it’s obvious—but to the average non-legal observer, it is not. And I wish people would hear this out loud in plainer English than all wrapped up in clever innuendo and “it’s going to be interesting” commentary.
What is with the WH apparently requesting that testimony not be under oath? We know haw well that’s worked in the past.
On the untranscribed chat with Rove and Meirs:
Is the Senate going to subpoena and the House going to chat?
Evil Dr. Grammar sez: Neither . . . is stepping forward.
AP adds to its list of errors (or, as it might say, “it’s” list).
I hate it when folks show they were absent from the 8th grade English class I taught oh so many years ago!
George Bush is the “air” inside the loop that one makes with a rope or other material.
Jeez, another hissy-fit. “I AM the Prezdint!” in another Bizarro World moment for the Bizarro #1 on planet Htrae, a wacky, cockeyed world: “He is well-meaning but witless, super-powerful but pathetic. His speech is illiterate and ungrammatical.”
Society is ruled by the Bizarro Code, which states “Us do opposite of all Earthly things! Us hate beauty! Us love ugliness! Is big crime to make anything perfect on Bizarro World!”. “Me unhappy!” he declares sadly in July 1959, “Me don’t belong in world of living people! Me don’t know difference between right and wrong – good and evil!”
Bizarro Dick Cheney would, of course, have always been right in every assertion.
Democracy has to be conducted in the light and in public. Rove and the other suspects need to testify under oath with no preconditions.
I think Rove has some compromising pictures of Cheney and Bush. That’s the only explanation that makes sense to me.
