As the great network sages and war pimps struggle for something profound to say on this fourth anniversary of the McCain/Lieberman war, why is it that they all wind up sounding like Dick Button describing a triple salchow? Today on MSNBC:
Brian Williams: General Petraus -- who was quoted today by the president more than once -- said in his office in Bagdad and said to me two weeks ago, this is not -- there is no military solution to this. Now having said that and if you agree to that, is the US up to, is Malaki up to, the kind of slow work, the grinding work of diplomacy, and bringing disparate groups together?Russert: You have asked the most important question that could absolutely have been uttered today. Is the Iraqi govt capable of taking control of their own destiny. Will young Iraqi men be willing to stand up and lead and die for their new government? Will they be able to reach out to Iran and Syria, but also to Shiites and Sunnis within their country? Those questions are unanswered. The president believes the answer will be yes, he has bet his presidency the answer will be yes.
No, actually he hasn't. He's not going anywhere, he's fairly sure he won't be impeached and he's said repeatedly that he'll be judged a great man by history. The only thing he's betting are the lives of more and more people Not Named Bush who will be sacrificed to his pride. His arrogance knows no limits, and he will continue this war -- nay, escalate it -- no matter how unpopular it becomes.
It may not be on the Dick Cheney-approved list of fourth anniversary war observations, but it is nonetheless true.

Dick Cheney Controls Tim Russert.
Russert = Sock puppet
He was given a gift-wrapped, face-saving, neat-as-pie chance to back a withdrawal, courtesy of the Iraq Study Group — and he (and his advisors) turned it down, calling it a “flaming turd”.
Says it all right there.
Promote peace: buy Dick Cheney a cheeseburger!
Jane!
And nobody dares to say, on this 4th anniversary of our unlawful invasion of another nation: civil war in Iraq, boiling out of control, as a result of our unlawful invasion of another nation.
Ummmm.
It’s not his presidency. It’s ours.
And it’s time to take it back.
Since I’m getting a kudo from LHP, I’d like to repost my comment from Letter to Pelosi.

If smoking guns contiue to become visible all over DC, and in San Diego, we should expect the conflict in Iran to begin.
How do we stop them?

this took me a long time to find so I’m also posting it here, beings that I posted it there after the new thread went up.
This is what Valerie Plame actually said in Waxman’s hearing:
Plame Testimony pt. 2
not very specific.
Dear Ms Hamsher
I posted this in CHS’s Lunch Bunch, but it goes well here.
A suggestion….
Bush’s position would be further weakened if we could force using the right term for the US presence in Iraq. “Occupation” is a lot more emotionally nasty for him to be made say than the macho “war!” And it is true, the war was over when Saddam ran and the statues came down. Then the Iraqis realised they had been lied to and we became Occupiers, objected-to Occupiers.
Perhaps if the whole blogosphere could be persuaded to use the word, Weasel in the White House would strut incrementally less.
Brian Williams reports that Bush’s man, Gen. Petreus, is calling Iraq a stalemate.
If Williams were a journalist, that would be his lede every night, not a passing comment to Pumpkinhead. Walter Cronkite put the kabosh on Vietnam with the same observation, even though Westmoreland wouldn’t own up to it. (Westmoreland, of course, sued CBS and lost.)
Do our fighting men and women know their commanding general thinks they can’t win their fight??
What an incredible mess this is.
History will demonstrate to us the true extent of Bush’s fuck-up, I am not looking forward to the years in which we find out.
Historians like to put James Buchanan on top of the list of Worst Presidents Ever, and as much as we all loathe Dubya, I still think Buchanan belongs there, because after all the nation nearly came to end because of his negligence. Things have gone very badly these days, but we don’t have to worry about a civil war and division of the United States.
We don’t have to worry just yet, that is. While Buchanan was still President, it wasn’t clear yet what the consequences of his actions would be, only that they might be very grave; at least as some people could perceive at the time. Today, in the midst of Dubya’s disastrous presidency and war, we can’t know what the next decade or so will bring. Will there be a major conflagration in the Middle East? Will Israel and Iran start shooting nuclear weapons at each other? Will Al Qaeda re-group in Afghanistan? Will some terrorist, say some Iraqi who watched his family burn to death as a kid and thus grow up hating us all, detonate a bomb in the middle of a major American city (ironically caused, rather than prevented, by Bush’s excesses)?
Bush’s failures may turn out over time to be as threatening to our very survival as Buchanan’s.
The closer the investigations get to Bush and the worse things go in Iraq, the more likely the invasion of Iran.
Sachem is too wise.
Speaking of our boy Dick, it seems his office paid Wade exactly $140K for office furniture shortly before Wade paid exactly $140K for a yacht to give to Duke Cunningham. The price of the yacht had been pre-negotiated.
Remember when we used to worry that Bush would fire Fitz? Well, he fired Carol Lam. I’m telling you guys - this US Attorney thing is the silver stake - we’d better jump it while we’ve got the window of opportunity. TPMMuckraker is leading the charge, but this one is worthy of a two-pronged attack. Don’t give them time to figure a way out like they did on Plame.
http://thinkprogress.org/2007/.....ite-house/
http://www.tpmmuckraker.com/archives/002802.php
He bet his presidency?
Sure. WHy not? Because he’ll never have to pay when he “loses”.
And the Repubs/Apologists are trying to position it so they won’t either.
The friends of the admin are profiting handsomely.
Course its not working out so well for the rest of us, and for the military who are casually “doubled down”.
As an aside, I know this is probably commonly understood, but here’s how the military spending boondoggle going on now trickles down to the little guy (or not).
My dad is a security expert. Designs high level security for jails, schools, govt buildings, stadiums, etc. Since 9/11 spending has gone through the roof in that industry, but here’s the kicker, the money is all being given to sweetheart contractors, who then simply sub it out to companies like my dads and keep 75% of the money. Not 75% of the profit, but 75% of the money. The remaining 25% is what the job actually costs to do, including all hardware, software, analysis, design, install, warranty, updates etc.
My dad’s company (and others) have been trying to get help from JoeLie (they are ct based) but of course, there’s no help.
As long as ‘they’ control the language, ‘they’ control the debate.
Jane, you say:
But really it’s not a ‘war’ it’s an occupation. What’s being escalated is the brutality of the occupation.
The question we should asking Bush & friends is ; are our troops fight on the side of the Baathist insurgents and their al Qaeda allies or on the Shia fundimentalists and their Iranian allies?
EPU’d from previous thread because the viewpoint of “you & me” Iraqis is so telling, so important-
Juan Cole’s blog today linked to an amazing video, “Hometown Baghdad”.

More of “Home Town Baghdad” can be viewed @

“What we immediately found absorbing in “Hometown Baghdad” is not the fear, confusion or carnage we’ve grown to expect from documentary reports out of Iraq. It’s the three men central to this series — Adel, Ausama and Saif — whose lives we see unfold in short, telling vignettes. We see them eat dinner and go to school, watch them go swimming and practice in their rock band. But in a war-torn, religiously divided city, even these simple actions are fraught.
On the fourth anniversary of our invasion of Iraq, when many of us have become hopelessly inured to reports of yet another bombing, the simple struggles of regular people take on a greater, more chilling power; we watch a way of life deteriorate before our eyes, and come to recognize the horrors of war in a way that the bold headlines or CNN news alerts no longer convey…”

Then, two days later, Novak called Joe himself. Remember, Novak claimed to have learned of Plame’s identity from the CIA? I hope you are not among those folks who believe that impeachment is not possible or is “off the table”. I remember Watergate and the process that really took less than 6 months from the beginning of the Senate hearings to the approval of a bill of impeachment. Once the truth gets exposed, as it is from the Libby verdict thru the House hearings on all the other crimes, there is no stopping the inevitable. Impeachment is indeed on the table and will probably force resignations of both the Chimpenfeurer and Darth Vader.
KEEP THE FAITH AND DON’T BE NICE TO NAZIS!!!
Russert’s myopia on Iraq is astounding. “Bet his presidency” on Iraq? Mr. Russert, that is almost the least costly of Bush’s bad bets. He has bet the lives of 3216 US fatalities, tens of thousands of US wounded, hundreds of thousands of Iraqi dead and wounded, millions of Iraqi’s displaced from their homes, and about half a trillion dollars so far. The total bill, even if the war were to stop now, will stretch into the trillions when future deferred costs are tallied. And I haven’t even accounted for the dismal effects on the Afgan war.
I said “almost the least”. The least cost in this war has been the damage done to mainstream media reporters such as Mr. Russert who swallowed whole the original justifications for this ghastly mistaken war. Looks like these reputations weren’t so valuable after all.
O.M.G.!
I think I just heard Feinstein calling gonzo a “liar” by substituting the word “monosyllabic”(sp?) in the appropriate space during the live Senate session! Can’t ya hear the wingers going, “Huhh, wudda she just say?”

I remember when 9/11 happened I found myself in the peculiar position of arguing in favor of a Phoenix Program-type response, rather than aerial bombing and invasion… That was simply because I assumed that there would inevitably be a Phoenix Program type response anyway, and horrifying as Phoenix is, it’s not as bad as a Phoenix Program combined with civilian bombing and all out war. Oh well. There’s your trifecta, right-wingers. Follow the Black Bridge, and the Armitage, and you always know where the deaths squads and drug dealing will blossom.
so kind of timmay to blame the young men of iraq for the country’s collapse…

Pam Spalding has a post up about the woman in pink from the Waxman hearings Friday.
EPU’d from last thread, but with emendations:
Bush today on the Iraq War:
This is the fourth mission: suppressing a foreign civil war and not letting a historical process run its own trajectory. Iraqis need to stabilize their own country first before moving or not toward democracy. Let historical forces play out, as the history of the US did.
The first mission was to prevent Iraq from using weapons of mass destruction and from completing its “nuclear program.” A phantom mission, since there were no weapons or a nuclear program.
The second mission was removing Saddam Hussein from power. Fine: Saddam was deposed and has been executed. That botched and distasteful execution is on YouTube for the world to see.
The third mission was sowing democracy in Iraq as a flower that will then blossom into democracy all over the Middle East. An impossible mission, as the terrain must be ripe for Iraqi democracy and for democracy in the Middle East. Iraqis and the people in the Middle-East have to be ready on their own for democracy. It’s not up to the US to foster democracy in the region all on its own. It is not up to Bush to assume the mantle of history. History has simply not chosen him to fulfill its mission.
Of course, since according to Bush, God speaks through him, he is History itself, and not merely the mantle of history. History itself: as Hegel put it, the History of the Spirit. Yes, Bush is psychotic and pathological enough to be that arrogant, and that narcissistic.
Send Russert to Iraq stripped naked clutching a spear and a towel for his tears. What a doofus.
Bush has lived a consequence-free life. He believes his Preznit-cy will turn out to be like everything else. He’s also deluded himself into believing that history will be kind to him.

Snow also promised Bush would veto the supplemental to fund the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan if it set limits on his commitment to Iraq. Not one reporter asked why this didn’t amount to Bush not supporting and funding the troops, especially since this is the charge that he keeps making against the Democrats.

We don’t have to wait for history to judge this war. It’s been clear that it was a mistake from the beginning.
Bush will never leave Iraq BECAUSE then he would be impeached! No one wants to impeach him because the war is going on and it would leave our troops essentially leaderless. (I know, that’s what’s going on now, but then it would be official.) If we ever want to impeach Bush, we’ll have to finish the war first.
obsessed @ 17
I could not agree with you more
let me tell you something that bothers me;
when one of the fascists that cheerlead this war are on the TEEvee they use differant language to indicate we might “loose”
we need to direct the conversation to the CORRECT perspective;
WE will not loose, THE PRESIDENT looses, he initiated a war without any provocation, he IGNORED the advice from our military, he IGNORED the advice from his aids
THE PRESIDENT can loose, AMERICA cannot loose this president’s war
these “pundits” try to assoicate America’s reputation with this war, IT’S THIS PRESIDENT’S REPUTATION that is at stake, NOT America or our armed forces
our military was ABUSED by this administration and our military strategists KNEW this aggression would bring harm to America
when the democrats or our pundits hear ANYONE say “loose” in the context of this war we must DISABUSE them from assoicating America with this president’s war
THIS IS NOT AMERICA’S WAR IT’S THE WAR OF THE SICK MANIACS IN THE MORONIC FRATERNITY KNOWN AS THE PNAC
Dick Button? That old queen?
Well he’d fit right in with this hustler-crazed administration.
Bush’s bet, whatever it is, isn’t anywhere near what other folks have been betting. By that I mean the American military and the Iraqis who supported them. I’ve been reading George Packer’s latest article:
http://www.newyorker.com/repor.....act_packer
and I really need to take a break. It’s depressing. Even though I was against the invasion of Iraq, I was hoping that it would, in the end, work to the benefit of most Iraqis. Packer’s article shows just how far we’ve fallen from that goal.

We can spin it all we want, but that won’t change the fact that in many peoples’ eyes, it’s America’s reputation. I’m not talking about people in this country. Imagine being one of the Iraqis in Packer’s story (see my earlier comment). Do you think they are going to care who is President? They’ve met lots of Americans. They probably won’t trust any of us again.
We’re supposed to be a democracy. Therefore, we’re responsible for the people we elect. Even if we don’t think that’s the case, folks in other parts of the world will. However we might wish it, George Bush’s screwups are our screwups. Saying anything to the contrary will just sound like excuses.
There are time when reading the blogs is inspiring, times when it is frustrating, and times when tears flow freely and without warning.

1. Q: How long would it take to eject a vice president from office by impeachment?
A: Theoretically it could be done in a day. In the morning a member of the House of Representatives could propose one or more Articles of Impeachment and then a vote could be called. A simple majority (50% plus one vote) is all that is needed to impeach. In the afternoon the Senate could try the case. A two-thirds vote is needed in the Senate to convict.
