So we posted this piece over at Sadly, No! last night, and our right-wing pals found it strongly not to their liking. We knew this when our server locked up.
The DDOS attack launched on us was especially interesting in light of the following credo in the Gathering of Eagles Mission Statement:
We believe in and would give our lives for the precious freedoms found in our Constitution. We believe that our freedom of speech is one of the greatest things our country espouses, and we absolutely hold that any American citizen has the right to express his or her approval or disapproval with any policy, law, or action of our nation and her government in a peaceful manner as afforded by the laws of our land.
We don't yet know who was behind the attack (it seems unlikely that the hit was ordered by Fred Hiatt and his Washington Post Thugz-4-Eva Posse), but life showed again that it is rich with ironies.
On the plus side, apparent orchestrated cyber-crime makes us feel really big and important. We felt so full of ourselves today that we asked TRex to let us post the piece at FDL where a whole lot more people can see it!
Rock on, TRex!
Anatomy Of A Con Job
As we know, opinion against the war in Iraq, and against President Bush, now stands at between 60 and 70 percent in America. If you're a right-wing authoritarian follower, how do you continue to prop up the necessary belief that you represent a silent majority of downtrodden patriots, and that someday a real rain will come and wash the scum off the streets?
Luckily, there are people out there to do that thinking for you.

Above: Right-wing astroturfer Larry Bailey
Step One: Invent a phony threat -- for instance, to the Vietnam War Memorial:
As a Vietnam veteran, and suffering through fox-hole combat, and knowing what the anti-war movement did to America and to my morale of me and the morale other troops during the Vietnam era, the thought of elements of those same vile and vicious people attempting to resurrect their venom and use the Vietnam Memorial Wall as a proxy was intolerable. My view was it must be challenged, and in short it cannot happen. The current anti-war movement is no different than the Vietnam era group, in fact many current participants are the same people who were involved in the 60s and 70s. They lie, deceive, distort, damage, desecrate, spit on our military, curse, hurl insults, and dishonor not only historical sites but hallowed ground if given the opportunity.
Step Two: Create a fake-nonpartisan campaign to 'protect' the memorial from the vile and vicious spitters-on and desecrators-of, who are converging on DC in a mammoth hippie tidal wave:

Our Mission Statement1. Gathering of Eagles is non-partisan. While each member has his or her own political beliefs, our common love and respect for America and her heroes is what brings us together.
Actually, they're about as non-partisan as this. Note the Vets For The Truth address through which contributions are funneled:
Please send checks or money orders to:
Vets for the Truth
ATTN: Gathering of Eagles
PO Box 291
Chocowinity, NC 27817
And note, as well, the enthusiastic pre-publicity from commentators such as Michelle Malkin:
SAYING NO! TO CINDY
A GATHERING OF EAGLES TO MARCH FOR AMERICAHow many times have you sat in front of the TV over the last four years, watching anti-war activists march on Washington, chase the ROTC off your local college campus, vandalize war memorials, insult the troops and wreak havoc under the surrender banner? How many times have you thought to yourself: What can I do?
As your planning continues, begin referring to all supporters as veterans regardless of whether they've ever served in the military. This makes it look like it's a rally of non-partisan veterans -- which is altogether much better, and much more likely to be taken seriously by the media, than a rally of Republican zealots frightened that the zeitgeist is escaping them.
Also be sure to stir up the Freeper beehive, because a Freeper will fall for anything if you slap a flag on it -- let alone a flag, an eagle, and the word, 'troops.'
Serious Media Inquiries: Kristinn Taylor

Join forces with other phony-nonpartisan groups:

Above: The inimitable Move America Forward Foundation
At last the day arrives. Have a bunch of people stand around heckling war protesters for a few hours:

Step Three: Declare victory! The Vietnam Memorial was saved!
A pure, grass-roots effort, the Gathering of Eagles, volunteers matched the massive Soros-funded anti-war machine sign for sign, chant for chant, and marcher for marcher. The contrast was most stark right before the entrance to the Memorial Bridge, where Eagles gathered with a field of American flags--while anti-Bush, 9/11 conspiracy nuts wrapped themselves in a figurative blanket of yellow "Out of Iraq" placards. Several of the vets shouted, "Yellow! How appropriate!" in between spirited chants of "U.S.A! U.S.A!" While the classless Cindy Sheehan ranted profanely, the Eagles raised their voices in polite, but roaring disapproval and raised their American flags in answer to the ANSWER socialists' Che banners and peace pennants.
America was strengthened:
When history is written, March 17th, 2007 will at long last eclipse March 17, 1967, as the day when soldiers in faraway Iraq and Afghanistan knew for certain, no matter what real time saw them doing, love and respect await their safe return. The day when it was proven to a watching world that Washington war memorials stand for what they always stood for, time immemorial, the day when the graves of fallen American soldiers the world were warmer.
Never again will America's brave warriors and their cause be abandoned and the people our country has pledged to liberate be left to perish at the hands of tyrants. Those days are most definitely over.
Whilst enjoying the afterglow, make up a jaw-dropping unofficial attendance figure, for instance that 30,000 heroes stood up for America against the dirty-hippie communist menace -- of whom there wasn't really a mammoth tidal wave after all, which also equals a victory.
What an outstanding day! The Eagles soared! You should be very proud of your fellow veterans, families, and supporters. There's so much to tell, and we encourage you to post your experiences in the the comments. In the meantime, two items of business:1) we have a gallery open for you to upload your digital photos to the website. That way you can share your photos with others. See the tab in the top right corner of the site.
2) the first unofficial estimate of the Eagle turn-out today...
30,000!
That figure may be adjusted upward as more figure are tallied during the week. Fox News reported today that the anti-war protesters had significantly less than they expected. However, they are erroneously reporting that the Eagles were there in "equal numbers". The truth is that we outnumbered them by at least three to one!
Go farther! Here Michelle Malkin claims without any evidence that it's an official number (emphasis added):
Blogburst: Gathering of Eagles--30,000 strong
By Michelle Malkin***Update: Kit at Gathering of Eagles reports on the National Park Service estimate of the GoE turnout: 30,000 strong. The silent majority no more.***
That's certainly true about the 'silent majority no more,' only not in the way she's claiming. Here's Brent Bozell's Newsbusters:
Gathering of Eagles (GoE): An Indicator of Old Media DeclineGathering of Eagles' web site reports that they were told by the National Park Service that their GoE estimate is .....
is .....
30,000
GoE's site is also saying that the protester counts being reported elsewhere were 5,000 to 10,000 (the Times reported "thousands" and WaPo said "several thousand,"but both papers acknowledged that the protester turnout was much lower than at a similar event in January).
Remember not to check the original source: Citing AmericaPundit who cites FreedomWarrior who cites someone else citing three other people who cite what Michelle Malkin says about what the GoE site says, is what they mean by 'the self-correcting blogosphere.' If it weren't true, someone would have said so.
Anyone who is not a dirty hippie should be thrilled by the turnout. I figured a few thousand people would show up, not 30,000. This is an estimate from the National Park Service, not from the GoE organization. It's a testament of rational people trying to take the country back. The sad part is that most of the press was given to the psychotic, immoral moonbats there protesting the war.
Also, if other published figures contradict the 30,000-heroes one, don't forget to keep up a constant drone of indignant complaint about the biased liberal MSM, because they super-lie about everything with gigantic crazy lies, just for the sake of dragging America down. Malkin updates:
***Update March 18, 2007 1:30am: The NYTimes lies...***
Pure bullcrap. Yup, the journalistic standard-bearers of the NYTimes relied on "several veterans of the antiwar movement" to give them crowd estimates of the Gathering of Eagles. It's the domestic equivalent of MSMers relying on dubious Iraqi stringers to provide them with war coverage while they sit in their comfy Green Zone offices in D.C. and Manhattan.
Don't believe the MSM -- either their lying by entirely omitting any mention of the numbers of people attending the Gathering of Eagles, or their deliberate playing down of the numbers who did come. The Parks and Service people counted thirty thousand patriots gathered to protect the Wall.
So what else is new, except in this case their lies are more than usually blatant in favor of their personal agenda. The National Park Service's first estimate of the turnout of Eagles is, wait for it: 30000.
Say guys, I heard some hippies are threatening to desecrate various locations in and around Baghdad. Why don't the 30,000 of y'all surge on over?
...Hey wait, where did everybody go?
Update: No such Park Service, 'Parks Service,' or 'Parks and Service' estimate has appeared in any form, apparently because the National Park Service no longer estimates the size of crowds at public events. No publicly available photo on the Web -- although please correct us if we're wrong -- shows more than a couple of hundred pro-war demonstrators in any place at any time.

ZED? JANE!
zed?
Hey! Wahoo, my first Zed! I’m so proud! I’d like to thank my mother…
I can see why the wingers are a tad upset.
Great job!
Hello, Gavin!
I knew GoE had succeeded in catapulting the propaganda when I saw the Saturday morning FuxSnooze-bot at the scene say that the GoEs had exceeded the anti-war demonstrators.
Sadly, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
btw, the National Park Service “crowd estimating” was discontinued during the Nixon Administration.
TRex, thanks for inviting your friends over tonite!
Kristinn looks like a dude!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
They’re probably form the Charlie Daniels Message Board. What a bunch of knuckle-dragging Cleti.
Such diversity in their ranks, too!
congrats, conniptionprofit!
[sighs]
Hey Pups - set your TIVOs. BIG HANK on Charlie Rose tonight. Starts at 11:30 on the east coast
Sometime I’d like to see snippets of what the flying monkeys try to say on our site. I am thinking that would be a fun job for TRex some evening when he can’t think of what to write about.
Nice news laundering on the part of the right wing sissies.
The National Park Service’s first estimate of the turnout of Eagles is, wait for it: 30000.
I call that a surge!
I’m sure they all rushed right down to the local recruiting office right after the protest and enlisted. Operation Yellow Elephant!
Great work, Gavin.
Fox and company do it again - invent a strawman and declare victory. Is anyone besides the wingnuts buying this crap anymore?
OT Hey Teddy- I am now on “Lieberliar radio address” patrol. Nope. Nothing new. Interesting.
oh yeah Teddy !- several are walking upright and some even have opposable thumbs :)
More than 3,000 pages of documents? Dumped on a Monday night? Can’t wait to see what’s in there.
I had just finished reading it over at Sadly, No! when I came over here to find it reposted.
Very, very funny. And sad. The Fraggle Rock/Chumbawumba mash-up was fantastic, btw. Rock. (For those of you who haven’t seen it, head over to Sadly, No! and check it out.)
The best part is of course the motivating belief that somehow, the anti-war protesters were planning to do an unspecified “something” to the Wall. Huh? Because the best way to prove that you’re against the war in Iraq and the deaths it’s caused is to desecrate a monument whose most prominent feature is a list of the dead from the last war of monumental policy failure.
Has anyone else found it ironic that the ones so bound and determined to defend the memorial are probably the ones who most likely hated it when its design was revealed?
100% irony-free, this lot is …
The pro-war crowd launched their cross-country vigil and had a small success last week here in the Bay Area: the names of the war dead are being removed from Crosses of Lafayette.
Valley Girl @ 18
It’s as if the DNC has stopped posting on the topic completely, after RGJoe got his turn. Odd, eh?

Isn’t Gavin wonderful?
I just spent the last few hours sawing through the brake cables in his girlfriend’s car.
See Kirk, there I wuz, doin’ my “church lady dance”, an’ now I feel like I stole yer popcicle! Sorry, bro.

I’m cheering your church lady dance!
(Was just trying to mock my obsession with the zed.
I’ve been working, I’ve been trainin’…)
Ha ha ha ha ha!
(Teddy- I think the park service was still doing estimates in the 1990’s but had stopped by the time of the million man march.)
Truth has a well known liberal bias.
Colbert.
I guess this makes the opposite equally true?
TeddySanFran @ 23
Maybe you managed to shut down the radio address server ;) But, it is odd, I agree. I will keep checking.

Saw that too on the news the other nite….
Very sad….
Makes me wonder how far this movement will push their agenda considering all those signs with those ugly words filled with hatred listed on this post….
Wiki-
After the Million Man March, the Park Police decided to discontinue providing official crowd estimates.
Now that was wierd. My comment on your comment was supposed to be: Who is this conniptionPROfit you speak of?
Am I late for the barbecue?
Off to bed, with visions of an out-of-work Abu dancing in my head…g’night all!

oops - multitasking on this end with insufficient processing power.
sorry about that.
Nope. Plenty of corn to be had here!
I was at a gathering of Eagles once, I think. It was a gathering of some kind of bird, anyway and one of them ruined my hat which, in retrospect, I am very glad I was wearing.

Welcome, Gavin!
Just watching Jon and his guest on the Daily Show discussing Religious Literacy. That’s a test Duncan Hunter would fail…heard him earlier on Hardball [unchallenged by Tweety] pontificate that Al Qaeda were attacking the Sunni.
Psssst, Duncan. Al Qaeda are Sunni.
Don’t confuse the righties with reality. I know, I know….
Go Watch Stem Cell Research and NIH with Harkin — it’s a repeat from today.
sheesh.

Why was goe not on the Colbert Report?
TeddySanFran @ 22
OK, now here’s what I find objectionable about the notion of “removing the names” because the families or friends don’t think memorial sites like Lafayette have a right to use them:
Why can I, a fellow citizen, not mourn the fact that “Private Smith” is dead? Why can I not mourn the fact that this dead fellow citizen of mine is now unable to contribute to the amazing organic structure which is American society? Why can’t I be full of sorrow over the loss of what would have been Private Smith’s future contributions to the world? Even if that contribution was unknown?
Do we or do we not believe that every person is uniquely valuable? If you say you believe that, don’t you also believe that I can be full of sorrow over the loss of that unique individual?
This bugs me.
Of course, many, many things bug me — and many of those items are much, much worse than this.
But still…
TRex, I’ll have you know that my girlfriend is making ‘grrr’ noises. Perhaps she might show up.
[drinks Bass at a gulp]
I think it’s interesting that they call their group the “Eagles”. Makes me think of Colbert.
“Antiwar Activism Emboldens Global Communism and Islamic Imperialism” is my favorite sign in the bunch. The stick-on letters most likely came from RED CHINA.

OT but so damn worth your attention: get thyself to see the opening five minutes of the Colbert Report. Especially those of you who are not big Rahm Emmanuel fans. I literally was laughing so hard, I almost spit some very good red wine across the room.

Hi, nice lady.
Snarl.
TRex - Thanks for supporting your progressive blogosphere colleagues who attract the ire of the DoS trolls!
It seems to me that, as a matter of policy, progressive bloggers should endeavor to provide a platform for any of their colleagues who are DoS’d.
Imagine a blogosphere in which every DoS attack leads to the victim’s message automatically and promptly being posted on dozens of other progressive blogs.
I think you would see the popularity of DoS attacks diminish greatly when DoS trolls come to realize that their attacks are actually completely counterproductive…
Gavin’s big scary Amazon of a girlfriend @ 57
Oh no, she’s here.
I went through a difficult, slushy drive with my wife, and my two girls (4 years old and 8 weeks old) to join the march on Saturday. It was great to share my desire to speak up for my beliefs with my family. My older girl has been to two previous marches, but this one was tough. It was cold and we were a little less than perfectly prepared. All in all it was the birthday treat for me that I really wanted. Somehow, we walked into the mall right in the middle of these hate spewing idiots. This was the only mar on the day. Vicious and berating comments yelled at us despite our children. The only violence I ever encountered at a peace rally was from this group and I hated to see my family scared. Anyway, I’ve been a lurker too long and finally had something to say. Stop the war, support the Congresswoman Lee’s Plan!
Gavin,
Thanks for reading all the nonsense so I don’t have to. I hold you in highest regards. Do you keep an airsick bag handy?
Freepers spend their money on such good things. They paid for Linda Tripp’s facelift in California.
…it doesn’t look as if this eagle group is really “for” anything…just a bunch of disgruntled, ignored-by- their-president, old fools….do you think any of them had a lightbulb moment at the Wall when they saw the anti-war protesters were ordinary men and women with families, gramps and grannies dressed as conservatively as they were?
Interesting that Fox and the gang could actually make a big deal out of this. Do you think anyone cared?
I must admit I liked the Jane Fonda/John Kerry signs the best.
Gavin M. @ 59
Well, that’s my cue!
I need to go see a man about a suit of armor.
Yesterday in Galena,Illinois we had our 5th annual democratic rally. Every year we’ve held up 2′x 2.5′ letter spelling out various slogans. This year it was Enough already! Bring them home!! We had twice as many people as usual and the only folks who showed up for an anti-protest, we managed to make them admit that they weren’t for the war,but for the troops.
There was a Give Peace a Dance happening in Dubuque, Iowa that had hundreds of people in attendance. The highlight was a 7 year old who joined his brothers’ band to sing We don’t need no education….we don’t need no thought control…..it was a riot….peaceful and all…f*ck the spin
Terrific post - I’m so glad you’ve shared it with us here.
I knew that when the rumors started going around about how “the Vietnam Memorial Wall has to be protected”, it had to be a big fat propaganda campaign. Shame on those who intentionally exploit and abuse people’s patriotism for political gain.
The Gathering of Eagles of Death Metal also protected Ground Zero from desecration. And they must have been at least five to one there! (At least, I think that guy was a protestor.)
freedom’s brushfire @ 60
Thanks for marching!
Gavin- thank you so much for this. I have finally almost absorbed it. It is a sad reminder of.. well, I just don’t know what to say, except how wrong and craven and stupid zealots can be.
I was struck by this part of what you quoted:
“The current anti-war movement is no different than the Vietnam era group, in fact many current participants are the same people who were involved in the 60s and 70s. They lie, deceive, distort, damage, desecrate, spit on our military, curse, hurl insults, and dishonor not only historical sites but hallowed ground if given the opportunity.”
Yes, in fact, many of the current participants are the same people who were involved in Vietnam era protests. I wasn’t there, but I count myself as among those there in spirit. Having come of age during VietNam, and then lived through Nixon, back then I never thought I would see worse. The Vietnam war was in some senses inherited from the French. But, the Iraq war is our very own war. And, not one I ever supported. And, Bushco. and Cheneyco. have defiled our Constitution and us, as a people, in ways that Nixon could never have imagined.
The VietNam war memorial is something that speaks profoundly to me, and also, I trust to others who came of age at that time. Talk about defiling something… that is what “they” have done.
Terry Olson @ 61
Thanks!
It’s actually really interesting when you get into it. There’s a professor at the U. of Manitoba who’s written books on the right-wing authoritarian personality type. Have you read any of his stuff?
TRex @ 64
I don’t think they’ve got anything in your size, unless there’s a spare 747 lying around for parts.
One of the Eagles Makin interviewed stated that they were there to guard not only the Vietnam War Memorial, but the WW II and WW III
Memorials, as well. That’s right the WW III Memorial! If in fact, there is a WW III Memorial,it will stand as the only example of proactive effort on the part of this administration in its war without end.

Hello, welcome, and thank you for marching for peace with your family. Sorry they got scared, being yelled at by a bunch of loudouths is scary — and the fear is youj don’t know how far they will take it.
Can you give us a first-hand guess at the numbers?
TeddySanFran @ 48
And here in SF we’ve been strolling up Market Street Sunday, having die-ins in intersections today, and hoping we were having an impact.
The wingers tell us we’re moving the whole fucking planet. Sweet goddess!
Being wingers, they’ve surely miscalculated the consequences of power.
All the same, nice to know of our power.
PS: Hey wingnuts -
San Francisco community values are now majority American values.
We’re kicking your boil-encrusted asses and reclaiming the Republic and our freedoms - for all Americans.
And we don’t need no stinking theists or gulag makers in the picture.
You wingers savor their works: we flush them.
Even in the marketplace of ideas, the septic tanks are finite.
As are the jail spaces.
Ask your pal Cunningham.
Something else I noticed: The Patriot Guard Riders and other groups like them were part of GoE.
The Patriot Guard Riders formed to protect military funerals from Fred Phelps’s ‘God Hates Fags’ demonstrators. They really are pretty nonpartisan and honest.
Whether they were happy at what they found at the pro-war demonstration, I don’t know.
Hotflash @ 74
I’m not very good at that, but I’d guess more than 5000, probably 10,000.
Monk @ 72
There is, in fact, a WWII memorial. It is godawful ugly, plunked in the middle of the Mall between the Washington and Lincoln memorials and bisecting the reflecting pool. Bob Dole et al lobbied very hard to abrogate the original plan for the mall for this ugly-ass mess.
Gavin M. @ 76
Sometimes I do feel it’s worth mentioning that Fred Phelps has gone to easily five times as many service personnel’s funerals as the Preznint.

Fred’s gone to the sidewalks outside the funerals, but never to the funeral itself. Having made Fred’s hit list myself, I can say with experience that he’s well aware of his legal rights, and they generally don’t extend into the churches themselves where these funerals are held.
You know the Big Fat Heaping Irony about all this?
When the wall was first dreamed up by Maya Lin, the wingnuts HATED IT. Hated it hated it HATED IT. The Feds had to create a separate conventional bronze sculpture to placate them.
If anyone was going to destroy the wall, it would have been a wingnut.

My brother and I went to an Iraq War vigil late this afternoon. There were a lot of horns honking in support, but there were also the inevitable one-finger salutes.
One guy screamed, “Dirty fucking hippies!” and we all roared with laughter. These guys are badly in need of new writers!
Seeing the pseudo-vets in the pictures, reminds me of the book “Stolen Valor” which documents the subculture of phony vets. In my experience with vets, the ones who were in combat usually don’t talk about it and are not cheering the kids to fight the next war.
